Increasingly jaded by riches & fame, Mick Jagger sang that “the sunshine bores the daylights out of me” whilst living in pleasurable exile on the Mediterranean coast. If you live in Valencia, it's easy to take the city beach for granted. Unlike tourists, locals can enjoy 'la playa' from much of the year but it doesn't necessarily mean they go that often! Distinct from the Mediterranean ports of Marseilles or Alicante, Valencia is a city built with its back to the sea. Its historic centre is somewhat away from the coastline and this means that going to the seaside is a rare event for some people working here. That said, this colourful July-August issue is packed with information regarding the history of Malvarrosa beach by feature writers David Rhead and José Marín. We also have an exclusive interview with Fabio Belli, the man behind the dynamic & ecologically friendly 'Beach Bol' project. It is to be found down by the sea, with volleyball and healthy fruit shake bars & more... Our expert restaurant reviewer Tim Birch has dined in Tokyo, New York, Paris and London. It is fitting therefore that he enjoyed an international dinner at the newish 'Clectic' restaurant in the cosmopolitan Cánovas zone. In Chill Out, we visit the attractive and legendary
'San Jaume' café bar in the atmospheric centre. It is said that they do one of the best 'Agua de Valencia' cocktails in town! Treat others as you would like to be treated and the world becomes a better place for everybody. Keep on shining! 24/7 Valencia Team “Down by the seaside See the boats go sailin’ Can the people hear, oh What the little fish are sayin’ Oh, oh, the people turned away Oh, the people turned away Down in the city streets See all the folk go racin’, racin’ No time left, no-no To pass the time of day Hey, hey, yeah, the people turned away The people turned away So far away, so far away See how they run, see how they run, see how they run, see how they run. Run-run, run-run, run-run... Out in the country Hear the people singin’ Singin’ bout their growing Knowing where they’re going Yeah, yeah Sing loud for the sunshine Pray hard for the rain And show your love for Lady Nature And she will come back again Yes she will, yes she will... Don’t they know that they’re goin’...” ('Down By The Seaside'- Led Zeppelin)

MALVARROSA BEACH OF VALENCIA People have been making sandcastles and messing about in the water down at Malvarrosa since the mid-19th century but those seven kilometres that separate the city centre from its beaches have often seemed a very long way indeed. The last decade, however, has brought the seaside a little closer. The whole idea of ‘going down the beach’ is of course a relatively new invention. For centuries the areas around Malvarrosa, Cabanyal and Canyamelar, were fishing communities who soon found that there were easier pickings to be had in that other ancient maritime profession, smuggling. The beach was a handy place for boats coming in from Algeria and Morocco to make ‘unscheduled’ stops… before passing through customs at the port on the other side of the bay. Malvarrosa Beach takes its name from the pink hollyhock ‘malvarrosa’ flowers planted in the area by the botanist Felix
Robillard in the early part of the 19th century and it was around this time when it started to become fashionable for the city’s upper and middle classes and their families to come down to the beach to relax and take in the sea air. The fashion had spread from Britain, southwest France and northern Spain. All over Europe, men in stripy bathing suits and large moustaches were going down to the beach to faff around, smoke pipes and pose for photographs, while the womenfolk sheltered under parasols, wide-brimmed hats and 15 layers of petticoats and skirts. This was all considered a little risqué by some. The mayor set out legislation separating the beach into two areas, ‘Las Arenas’, which was only for male bathing and, on the other side of a 200-metre ‘no man’s land’, ‘Malvarrosa’, which was only for women. The first railway line down to the beach was built in 1852; the station was in the exact spot where the Marina Real tram stop is today. These were golden years for Valencian business and the prosperous bourgeoisie looked to create their very own Brighton, Santander or Biarritz here on the Mediterranean. Valencia was never able to compete with these more glamorous ‘resorts’ favoured by royalty
and the aristocracy. The Mediterranean weather was too warm (having a tan was just not an option for any self-respecting lady of the time) and bizarrely, the sea at Valencia was considered to be “too warm and tepid to be of any advantage to health”. Nevertheless, a pier was constructed (sadly destroyed during an air raid in the Civil War) and, inspired by the royal pavilion at Brighton, two huge neo-classical bathhouses were built complete with Parthenon-like columns, which can still be seen from the beach and are now part of a luxury hotel complex. Restaurants and bars began to line the seafront; many, like La Pepica and Valencia’s oldest restaurant, La Marcelina (1888), still survive today. Work began on a grand project of a large avenue with gardens running through the middle which would connect Valencia to its beach. After two or three name changes (including Paseo al Mar and Avenida Lenin), the avenue is now known as Avenida Blasco Ibáñez and over a hundred years later, it still hasn’t reached the sea. At the turn of the century, the beach was frequented by great Valencian figures of the time. Many of Sorolla’s greatest works were painted here and Vicente Blasco Ibáñez built a house on
twentyfoursevenvalencia 9
the seafront, which has recently been restored and is now a museum. The 1920s, however, was the start of a slow decline, as fashions among the well-todo started to change. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, it was the working classes, unable to afford trips to the French Riviera, who were catching the tram to Malvarrosa (as celebrated in Manuel Vicent’s book) in the thousands each Sunday afternoon. The grand Balneario of Las Arenas was now downgraded to a cheap and cheerful sort of Butlins. Families paid the admission and spent the day around the open air pool (now part of the hotel), the private beach, the children’s park and the open air cinema. Most Valencians over 50 will have spent many a Sunday afternoon picnicking down at Las Arenas. By the end of the ‘60s, however, people started to find their way further afield to beaches which were more glamorous and, let’s face it, less likely to have raw sewage pumped into them. Malvarrosa was unable to compete with Benidorm and the Balearic Islands, or even its neighbours like Cullera or Canet. It wasn’t until the ‘90s that Malvarrosa started to clean up its act. In the ‘80s
it had become an important part of Valencian nightlife. At that time there was no promenade and the dozens of pubs and clubs spilled out onto the beach itself, which made for a great night out but didn’t help in keeping the place clean to attract daytime visitors. The local government decided on a plan to turn things around. The building of the promenade, the setting up of the showers and volleyball courts, the kids’ parks and the cleaning up of the water (Malvarrosa and Cabanyal have both been awarded European blue flags again in recent years) created the Malvarrosa we know today. Most of the discos left but the families came back in droves. The past decade has seen the America’s Cup and the Formula One Grand Prix come and go. Lewis Hamilton and company weaved their way around the yachts in the America’s Cup port right next to the beach for five consecutive years between 2008 and 2012. The old Las Arenas complex has been converted into an impressive five star hotel (although it’s a great shame the old swimming pool is no longer open
to the public). All this has had a mixed effect on the area. While some of its old charm has undoubtedly been lost along the way, transport links with the city have been much improved. The metro now links Malvarrosa with the airport and tourists and the city’s residents alike are spending more and more time there, enjoying the improved facilities at the beach. The promenade is a popular place for runners and cyclists and new restaurants have arrived. Whether elite sports and superficial event politics were the right way forward for everyone is open to question. Bringing Formula One to Valencia cost more than 117 million euros and now that it’s gone, it won’t be missed by many. Malvarrosa, after all, isn’t quite Monte Carlo. Just as it wasn’t quite Biarritz or Santander back in the 19th century and it wasn’t quite Benidorm in the ‘70s or Mallorca in the 1990s. And thank goodness for that, it is what it should be… a great big, beautiful city park by the sea.

Coque
FREALANE Tell us something about your backgrounds, travels and experiences. Frealane is a trio that comes from three different countries – Andrea Dee (lead vocals, songwriter) from Paris, France, Coque (lead guitarist) from Valencia, Spain and Aaron Knight (drummer/ producer) from London, UK. We all met in New York City and with ‘big city life’ comes that need to find your community and make it your family and that’s what we have with Frealane. We share the same goals, passions, and drive, we are family, it’s simple. This is the fuel that inspires us to make great music, pushing the envelope as we grow as people and musicians. Our travels have taken us around the world and we have seen a lot. For us, absorbing the energy of a new place like the frantic rush of California or an unfamiliar stage in Berlin at 02.00h or playing for an anxious set of new fans in London is all part of the excitement, call it the defining moment if you will. It’s when you live in music and it gives you a feeling that gets you deep down. It’s truly invigorating and beyond belief, it’s what Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

we yearn for as artists… it’s great. We wouldn’t trade it in for anything! We have the best job in the world. What are your influences regarding your music? Our sound is indie-electro, drawing influence from anything that is creative and emotive from movies, art, music, past to present. Of course you have the classics like Metallica, Radiohead, Placebo, Pearl Jam, Hendrix, Beatles, Phantogram, Biffy Clyro and the Foo Fighters. However, as artists or creators of any kind, we are constantly being influenced and our inspirations change according to what we see, breath, feel and experience. It could be from something we’ve seen, to a verse we’ve read or by the infectious hook that you can’t get out of your head while you are stuck in the back seat for ten hours while you drive to the next gig, it’s all part of the journey. How does living and working in Valencia compare to living and working in New York? Living and working in Valencia is very different from New York City. Valencia is beautiful, with a lot of great energy; it is a
Aaron
very welcoming city. Don’t get us wrong, New York City will always remain in our hearts, but Valencia is a place that is constantly progressing, almost like New York in the ‘70s. It is a refreshing blank page for us and this is great as it gives Frealane a chance to really make music and influence people without restriction, which is a place from where true art is made. In Valencia, you run into familiar faces everywhere you go in the streets, bars and clubs and that makes this city feel very comfortable and special, truly adding to its charm. In a nutshell, New York brought us together and Valencia is where we are fine-tuning who we really are. Can you take us through the tracks of your new album, ‘Learn’? Enough Time This song is the newest one on our album, it almost didn’t make it! It’s about us all taking things for granted at some point or another and the realization of its worth when it is gone. Parole This song is about that boy!! The one you are weak for, the bad boy, the one that you know is not good for you, like cake, you simply can’t resist! Breaking Chains Never let anyone tell you that something is impossible. The sky is the limit; you should always reach for it!
I Die A very special and intimate song about mental abuse. The lyrics say it all. This song was really difficult to write for me (Andrea), but during those hard times music helped me a lot, knowing that I was not alone and that there was always hope. Will you be playing in Valencia during the summer?
On the Road Artists are very special creatures. We live on emotions, dreams and feelings. Being on the road, on tour across Europe and across the US can get tough sometimes but the adrenaline you have onstage when it’s showtime and that passion and drive you have when you are doing what you love gives you a rush that keeps you wanting more and more.
Yes, we will be playing all around the city (you can check our website for further info). FOOD
SUMMER BREAKFAST MUESLI By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca This October will be the fifth year anniversary of La Ola Fresca but sadly, one person who has been with me pretty much from the start one way or the other, Sabina, will be leaving before the celebrations to fulfil her dreams in the air with her group ‘Vertigo’ (Aerial Silk Team). So to let you in on a secret, part of that strength to dangle and swing dramatically from the beams is maintained by a high intake of La Ola Fresca flapjacks and a weakness for granola (not to mention chocolate brownie.;) ), all recipes that require use of an oven. As the July heat soars, we look for oven-free ways of keeping the Vertigo team and our own energies high and turn to a recipe invented by Swiss physician and nutritionist, Maximilian Oskar Bircher-Benner, in 1900.
Summer breakfast muesli Ingredients per person
To soak • 25 gm rolled oats (not jumbo) • 1 handful dried fruit of your choice (dates, apricots, raisons) • 6 tablespoons apple juice (preferably organic or home-juiced) • 1 dessert spoon sunflower or pumpkin seeds • 1 tablespoon chopped almonds or hazelnuts • 1 teaspoon cinnamon / ginger To finish • 2 tablespoons Greek yoghurt (whole fat) • 1 apple, cored and grated • Decorate with fresh fruit and seeds to your liking (such as blueberries and sunflower / sesame seeds toasted)

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
CLECTIC
It is really pleasing to know that, even in recession, enterprising people are still willing to risk opening new businesses, none more so than restaurants. In the past couple of months, D and I have eaten in several newly opened establishments here in the city. Most have been great and I hope they succeed. This month’s restaurant is one of these recently-opened venues. Clectic Open Kitchen is a novel and interesting idea. It advertises itself as “whatever you want it to be…Gastrobar, restaurant, bar, cafeteria or pub”. Its creator, Ricardo, hopes clients will come in for anything from a drink (Gin tonics are their speciality, more on them later) to a coffee or tapas to a full meal, any time of the day from 09:00h – 01:00h. And, if you can’t eat in, take away or they’ll deliver all over the city. The ‘open kitchen’ concept means that you can eat anything you like from the menu, whenever you like. The restaurant itself is light and airy (and mercifully cool on the very hot night we went). There are all sizes of tables to accommodate from two to ten people and a low chill out area with sofas and low seating. Nice artwork adorns the walls and the lighting is subdued. We arrived just before the rush and were seated at a good-sized table next to one of the floor to ceiling windows by one of the very friendly and welcoming staff. We decided to order water and a bottle of red wine and our server recommended a Cigales 13 Cántaros Nicolás (16€ a bottle or 2.30€ by the glass). A very smooth and fruity tempranillo, from Bodegas César Príncipe in Castile and León. So, on to the food, we were three that
evening so we decided to share tapas and each order a main course. We chose Tempura de alcachofas (Artichoke tempura), crispy and soft inside with a delicious spicy lime mayo dipping sauce. We also savoured their Camembert horneado con nueces, arándanos y romero (Oven-baked camembert with walnuts, blueberries and rosemary), which was perfectly aged and cooked, runny cheese with a great flavour. Then, a speciality of the house, Brownie de buey (a light pastry topped with slow-cooked pulled beef) moist and full of flavour. We had wanted to try the Tomato tarte tatin, as both D and P adore tomatoes, but unfortunately there had been a run on this particular dish earlier on – next time! To make up for this, a plate of Sung chai bao arrived at the table, delicious Thai-style spicy minced beef with lettuce to wrap it in, to dunk and eat. A big hit at our table! All the tapas we ate were 7€ – 7.50€. For our main courses, D chose the ravioli, stuffed with artichoke and infusion of sage, butter and a sprinkling of parmesan (9€). P ordered one of the super salads – a Cobb classic. This arrived at the table to gasps, it was a huge & beautiful looking salad consisting of chicken, bacon, cheddar cheese, onion shoots, and hard-boiled egg over a profusion of lettuces, great and tasty value at 9€. I had the red Thai curry with basmati rice, suitably warned by our server that it was very hot and spicy (not so spicy for an English palate), an excellent and authentic Thai flavour. We finished the meal (in your interest only, you understand) with a New York cheesecake and a Toffee apple tart, both 4.50€ and extremely good. I mentioned that gin & tonic – the ‘Gin Clectonic’ – is a speciality of the house and we felt, once again in the interests
of the article, that we should try one. I had a Hendricks gin with tonic and red fruits, D tried the Bombay Sapphire with orange and tonic. Once again, beautifully presented on a little tray with a large balloon glass of gin with ice, a bottle of tonic, and a little ice lolly of your chosen flavouring to swirl in as much or as little flavour as you like… Presentation in Clectic is great, there is a food designer in the kitchen as Ricardo feels that presentation is as important as the taste. MON VALENCIA Just a brief hop, skip & jump from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Mon Valencia is easy to find and a pleasant, upmarket restaurant for lunch or dinner in the centre. Set on two floors with a modern yet warm interior, this is a perfect place for groups as Mon has the capacity for 200 customers! At the back, leading onto a quiet pedestrian street there is an attractive and mellow outdoor terrace for lunch or dinner. On the spacious first floor, there are plenty of tables with dining for couples and groups. Upstairs has a great window view for people watchers as the figuras stroll down the legendary C/ San Vicente. Incidentally, ‘mon’ is the Valenciano word for ‘world’… and there is a gentle sophistication to this place. The cosmopolitan, black-shirted staff were naturally friendly and helpful, both upstairs and downstairs. We chose to enjoy a lunch and shared our different dishes so we were both able to get a good idea of the quality and variety of the cuisine here. Our tasty starters were fluffy Croquetas de jamón filled with ham and mushrooms. We also savoured a fresh Ensalada mezclum con mozzarella, cherry, bacon, picatostes y berenjena, which was a lovingly presented salad filled with colour and the fresh & distinctive flavours of cherry tomatoes, bits of bacon, eggplant and more. We let our helpful and informed, blackclad waiter recommend their main course speciality of Meloso arroz pescado, which was a tasty and filling soupy rice dish with prawns in a fish sauce. He tells us that their duck & mushrooms meloso is another one to try. We then shared a delightful, succulent salmon dish (plenty of omega 3
for the healthy) with red pepper and potato purée. We finished off with a refreshing little postre of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, which was elegantly presented with raspberry and herb. The daily menu changes every day but you will always find quality rice, meat and fish dishes available. Following our weekend lunch, we popped in again on a midweek night for a riveting live flamenco set with dancers, guitar and singing by an internationally renowned flamenco collective. It was a truly joyous night with some of the crowd joining the dancers at the end. The show is currently on from 22.00h – 23.30h every night. The live flamenco show was a treat to watch and experience with a charismatic Andalusian singer / dancer from Granada and a gifted Spanish guitarist regaling the international clientele with some dazzling bulerías, tangos, fandangos, sevillanas and more. Expect flamenco en directo every night but do confirm with the restaurant beforehand. For our evening meal, especially memorable was the Pulpo a la brasa, which was a lovingly presented work of art. It was a grilled octopus that combined succulently with the soft textures of seaweed, paprika purée and olive oil as well as the towering, fried pastry that shot upwards from the (salt-sprinkled) trendy, rectangular base. An urbane version of a seafaring dish. The headless prawns also stood out… but with a twist. Brocheta de gambas en costra de Kataifi y salsa romescu is a distinctive combination with the prawns being wrapped in a wiry pastry of Arabic origin, which we then dipped in a Catalan romescu light sauce that combines tomato with garlic and crushed almonds. The sheer quality of the cooking and ingredients means that that the combination of food and drink never leaves you feeling heavy… there is a harmony and method to the cooking and art of dining at Mon.
We then shared a Tataki de atún rojo, which was a Japanese-style dish of thicklycut and distinctive tuna seared quickly over a hot flame with a taste that was memorable for having lots of character and decorated with cherry tomatoes. The exquisite little asparagus to accompany were semi-cooked to perfection. This way of cooking was invented by a 19th century rebel samurai! This is top quality Mediterranean cuisine with touches of the exotic. The portions are neither small nor large and this makes for a balanced meal over the course of a nicely stretched-out lunch or dinner. Great food all day and great live music at night. CHILL OUT
SAN JAUME San Jaume has to be one of Valencia’s most emblematic café-bars. It opened in 1984 and the humble and kindly owner, Vincent, has seen many happy customers pop by over the years. These include loyal locals, international visitors and also includes famous celebrities like the former Valencia CF player Amadeo Carboni, the actress Lolita Flores, Argentine actor Ricardo Darín, sculptor Miquel Navarro, French actress Jaqueline Bisset, politician Carmen Alborch and many more. It is therefore no surprise that this distinctive and historic bar has been used as the backdrop for television adverts and a number of international films, too. It’s not hard to see why San Jaume is so very special. The building used to be a pharmacy with the same name, from the 19th century, and the current furniture Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia
and overall structure dates from when it was an elegant chemist’s shop. Check out the carved ceilings and upscale bar and the spacious upstairs, too. The mellow terraza has the privilege of being covered by trees and has a direct view of the Barrio del Carmen’s main thoroughfare, C/ Caballeros. This makes it just perfect for people watching! You can chill out all day and late into the night with a good coffee, good selection of rums, whiskey or beer. Their local cocktail, Agua de Valencia, is famous in town as one of the best versions and is a mixture of orange juice, cava “and a mixture of three liquors, a secret of the house”, Vincent adds with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. He is keen to point out that you can unwind with a good range of gin & tonics here that include Hendrick’s, Gin Mare, Bulldog, London
No. 1, Ginself (Valencia), G’vine from France, Premium and more... He adds that the café-bar is a meeting point for friends and group tertulias and that there are art exhibitions for local artists. The music is quite varied, ranging from pop to jazz, depending on the time of day or night. This is real Valencia café society where you can read the local papers with your coffee or sip a beer in the summer shade. It’s a perfect place to meet & catch up before exploring more of the historic centre’s nightlife. AT VALENCIA BEACH My Thai family
Fabio with his dog... Vido.
AT THE BEACH INTERVIEW WITH FABIO BELLI Tell us something about your background, travels and experiences.
visiting new places, new countries and meeting new people until today.
I was born in a small village of the centre of Italy where I had a great childhood and adolescence until I was 20 years old. After that, I started to travel, and the more I was travelling the more I wanted to…I quickly realized that there was something else out there, away from the place I was born. This was probably the spark that lit up my curiosity.
Meanwhile, I started new businesses between Valencia and Barcelona, principally the hotel business. I lived in many other places, for short or longer periods, but my base was always Valencia. I always came back. One of the best choices I ever made was to make an enterprise out of a journey with an old friend in a sturdy old car (Méhari) throughout Africa, South and Central America. It was a great project with a great goal, to make people laugh (see www.movingslowly.com for more info). It took us about two years, lots of laughs. Lots of things happened, all good. Now, since my second child was born, together with my wife and my kids, we spend six months on a small island of Thailand and the rest of the time we are still here in Valencia.
After a few years of vagabonding throughout Europe I arrived in Valencia and, for the very first time in my life, I had the feeling that I had found a place that really suited me. It was not the greatest place in Spain, there were more known and more beautiful cities but for me it was the place. It had everything I was looking for and above all it made me feel like at home (like never before). So, together with my best friends, I started my professional career opening an Italian restaurant (now there’s a surprise!) and then another one and another and so on. I was lucky and things were going very well. I was not even 30 years old and I had the money and the time to do what I wanted. I kept on travelling. I sold my company shares and dedicated the rest of my life to
How does living in Asia compare to living in Europe? Living in Asia is different. It has a different vibration; it’s quiet and pleasant. Every place has its own flavour and I believe there is a place for each moment in our lives. In Asia, we live on a small island and we stay in a hut, so the living is very basic and modest. I have everything
I need. When we get back to Europe, everything goes fast and it is more confused. We get stressed about money and possessions. We have lots of things and we are still not happy. We could say that Europe is less spiritual than Asia; that Asian people are more polite, or nicer or wiser…I’m not very sure about it. I think there is a bit of everything in everywhere, it depends on us, and on the way we look at it. We make our own film most of the time, but what really matters is if we are happy or not. The vibration of the ground has something to do with it…. Could you explain to us about ‘Beach Bol’? ‘Beach Bol’ is a project we developed with the Council of Valencia. It is a training camp for beach volleyball and other beach sports (beach tennis, foot volley etc.) situated on the Playa de la Malvarrosa. It is a public place where people can enjoy the beach doing sports for free. We provide the nets and keep the courts organized and everything is totally for free. We also give classes to people of all ages, clinics for higher levels, social duties and organize tourneys, events and daily activities. We have a healthy beach bar with great fruit

shakes and fresh food. The bar is also the headquarters of ‘Beach Bol’. From there we manage the centre and we take care of our friends. Thanks to the bar, the entire project is sustainable. What is the philosophy of this new concept at the beach? The idea is to promote the beach in Valencia by doing outdoors activities in a great spot and to feed people with good energy, keeping them far from the stress of the concrete jungle. Beach Bol is great. What we have achieved in just two years is awesome. The ambience and the happiness on the faces of the people participating is the best prize
for us. Every day we host people from everywhere who socialize with locals and have a great time together. We would like to make them happy and for a couple of hours a day and make them forget the bloody crisis…. You have travelled a lot. How do you see the future for Valencia regarding tourism? I think Valencia has great potential as a tourist destination but maybe in recent years it has not been maximized in the right way… well, that is my personal opinion. It is very well located, has easy accessibility, great weather all year round, delicious food and good human

resources but it has to be optimized in a better way. Lots of big events but few services for the town is not good. Big events are important for a place, it is a great tool to take advantage of but little things also have to be done to make the offer more attractive for tourists. There should be a coordinated tourist programme and, first of all, a pool of good professional people who are able to design a coherent list of plans, with the same aims and not just for big, commercial events like Formula 1 and the America’s Cup! SUMMER LOVE AND FESTIVALS Summer is here and the season of straw hat, tents and festivals is in full swing. What better country than Spain for memorable days of great music, sun and beer? Spain offers many great choices every year, so let’s go over some of the main festivals happening this summer of 2015. Whether your personal choice of music is electro, reggae, hip-hop, rock, pop or country, or you just want to go for the atmosphere and freedom one feels at these places, there is always a festival for you. FIB 15 (Festival Internacional Benicàssim) on 16-19 July, is probably the most well-known festival in the Valencia area and personally one of my favourites for many a reason. First of all the location itself, held in Benicàssim, just a 45-minute train ride from Valencia, you have four days by the beach of some of the biggest names in the music industry. The camp inside is very big and socialising is made easy due to the large amount of young Brits and festival goers from all over the world. Being a predominantly Englishspeaking crowd, the line-up includes some of Britain’s best bands including Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Blur, Portishead, Clean Bandit and Kaiser Chiefs to name a few. Reasons to go: Beach, Beer and Blur... Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

Moving over to a more electro scene, the city of Valencia holds the awesome Marenostrum Festival 11-12 July at the Antigua Estación del Grao near the Port. Here you will find two intense days of some of the nation’s best DJs and intentional ones, too. The campsite is big and is only a few minutes away from the stage where you will hear the likes of Afrojack, Danny Avila, JP Candela and Matthias Tanzmann amongst others. The crowd here is in large part Spanish but electro lovers from around the world come, too. Reasons to go: Dancing, drinking and DJs. If you like the sun, the beach and chilling to some reggae tunes, you can make your way to the Rototom Sunsplash festival. This is a great choice, not only for its music but also its wide array of activities, cultural events, speeches, workshops and general atmosphere. This laid-back festival is the longest in duration (eight days) and has been going on for over 20 years. The dates are from 15-22 August and it is a perfect way to end an intense summer of festivals! The location is actually the same as FIB, so no need to remind you of why it’s great. Music-wise, you’re in for a treat: Lee Scratch Perry, Major Lazer, Super Cat and the Pioneers are just some of this year’s reggae lineup. So that’s it for Valencia. However, if you do leave for the summer, here is a quick
list of Spain’s other festivals: BBK Bilbao on 9-11 July: Muse, of Montreal, Alt-J Arenal Sound, Burriana from 28 July – 2 August: The Kooks, Hives, Vitalic, Ting Tings, Tom Odell. Electrosplash Vinaoros 10 -12 July Iboga Summer Festival Tavernes de la Valldigna 23-25 July Low Cost Festival Benidorm 24 -26 July Aspesuena Aspe 31 July - 1 August Leyendas del Rock Villena 5-9 August Medusa Sunbeach Cullera 13 -16 August There you have it, now all you need to do is pick one and have a great time. VALENCIA WORLD Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”. However, in spite of its reputation at the time of being moderna, I would venture to say that only in recent years can Valencia opt for that qualification as the city becomes more and more multi-cultural, more open to new trends, fashions, gastronomy, music... more cosmopolitan. Over the years, the city seems to have unfolded to the daylight and there is a novel sensation of actually being spoilt for choice in terms of low-key cultural activity. Could you tell us about Laboratorio?
MARC OF CAFÉ DE LAS HORAS & LABORATORIO Tell us something about background and experiences…

I studied Spanish at the University of London and began my love affair with Spain and Spanish culture in the ‘80s, travelling extensively and spending quite long periods in Córdoba and Albacete. I managed to squeeze in local fiestas and ferias around the country as I devoured all I could of Spanish cultura, art and literature… being particularly fascinated by Góngora, Bécquer, Galdós, Baroja, Unamuno and ¿cómo no?, Lorca. How does Valencia compare now to when you first came here? Valencia in the ‘80s and ‘90s was a very different world...like any city or any period there are things I miss and things that are definitely better. How much of the ‘good old times’ just means ‘I am now jaded’? LOL! Yes, there was a faster nightlife and a certain exciting thrill of actually living Lou Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia
The Laboratorio as an idea emerged at a time when the Plaza de la Virgen had become the haven of the richer foreigner and local custom seemed to have been pushed out. So I wanted to bring back the easiness of having a drink and a meal at an affordable price, if not quite ON the square, well, then OFF the square. Which can’t be bad for foreigners either, can it?
coffee cocktails, mixing Old Fashioneds and Black Russians, unashamedly camp with Mina, Marisol and ‘The Sound of Music’. We worked hard to bring back the tertulia, offer a quiet corner for poetry readings and literary activities, and organize art exhibitions and café-theatre. On the silly side we‘ve done Games Nights, Drag Nights, bathing suit Noches de San Juan, champagne showers. On the more sophisticated side, we’ve organized fabulous fashion shows, live jazz, piano and violin recitals, 16th century soprano & lute from the court of Elizabeth I, ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ (with a diamond workshop), the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ formal gala, breakfast with the ‘Books of Hours’…and more. Much more. It’s a heady cocktail in itself, that’s what makes us special. Could you tell us about any events you have planned for the summer?
It’s a Lab because we are not afraid to experiment with drinks, food, decoration, and activities. We do a pretty unique blend of local flavours – bravas, paella, tablas, hamburgers, more exotic & even spicier fare like Arab chicken wrap, Thai curry, satay, and homemade dim sum as well as vegetarian dishes including veggie burgers, curries, and stir fries. Drinks can also surprise. You’ll have to try the tamarind mojito, sandía frappé, Jamaican ginger beer mojito, and lychee gin tonic. We also organize themed dinners, exhibitions, and apéritifs with guided tours.... basically anything and everything we consider worth the effort.
This month of July in both bars we’re mixing and matching as usual with some NLP talks, a few language evenings, the presentation of a new Mexican alcohol (Sotol), a mindfulness workshop, some live guitar; and we‘re launching our ‘tapas & paseo’ in Spanish, French or English. But perhaps I’m most excited about the concert we’ll be holding on July 23...a kind of international fusion of folk, blues and jazz that picks up on ethnic rhythms from at least four continents. We’ll be taking the fusion concept one step farther and will design a cocktail list to match the sounds. Culture and pleasure for the different senses…
Café de Las Horas has been recommended in a good number of newspapers and guidebooks. What it is that makes it so special?
Interview by Owl
Anyone entering the Café de las Horas is struck by the extravagance. My business partner Manuel Castillo has created our unique signature decoration of over-thetop yet elegant kitsch . And for those Valencians who have been coming to the Café de las Horas for more than 15 years, the place is unique at another level: we really were at that time a hidden haunt for the bohemian arty crowd... pioneers playing classical music, offering teas,
