HORCHATA & AGUA DE VALENCIA The warm days are upon us so it’s still time for a long, cool drink. Valencia has two of its very own. Well, horchata was invented in the Sudan and Agua de Valencia, is really just Buck’s Fizz with a twist. However, let’s not get caught up with details, these days they are both considered as Valencian as paella, fireworks and construction companies. Horchata is a bit of an acquired taste. While some would go miles out of their way in the summer heat for just a sip, others would go even more miles just to avoid the stuff (one person we spoke to described it as milk mixed with sand). It looks and tastes like a sort of nutty milkshake, although, actually, there’s no milk in it. It is made from crushed chufas, or tiger nuts, and water. Sometimes in a sort of slush puppy form, it’s always cool and refreshing. Befitting its cough medicine texture, it’s really good for

you. Rich in iron and potassium, it has diuretic and energy restoring properties, sort of a medieval Lucozade really. The chufa originates from the Chuf area of Sudan. It was one of the first plants to be cultivated by man. They found sacks full of the things in Tutankhamun’s tomb just in case he fancied a few glasses of horchata in the afterlife, we suppose. The chufa, like most good things, was brought to Valencia by the Moors around the year 700 but it wasn’t until the Christian conquest that horchata got its name, or so legend has it. Some days after the conquest, the conquering Christian King Jaime I was riding round the huertas in the Muslim farmlands of Alboraya surveying his newly conquered properties. It was a hot and dusty day and a Moorish peasant woman offered him a drink. “What is this?” he asked as he gulped down the flavoursome nectar (or milk with sand, depending on your taste). “Aixo es llet de Xufa, Senyor” (“It’s Chufa milk, sir”), replied the Moorish woman in perfect Valenciano. “Aixo no es llet de xufa, aixo es or, xata” (“That’s not chufa milk, that’s gold, my girl”, or words to that effect). And so the

name ‘or xata’, or horchata, was born. Just why the king was riding around on his own amongst his enemies just days after a fierce battle, just why he accepted a dodgy-looking drink from one of them and, indeed, who exactly recorded this conversation has been lost to history, but that’s the only explanation you’ll get round here. Horchata has become the archetypal Valencia summer drink and Valencians flock to cool off in the ceramic-tiled horchatarías dotted all around the city, typically decorated in clinical white and blue with wrought iron tables and chairs for maximum cooling effect. One of the most famous is the 200-year-old ‘Horchatería Santa Catalina’ opposite the bell tower of the Santa Catalina church, tucked away just off the corner of the Plaza de la Reina. If you want to go to the real home of horchata, take the short trip out by bus or metro to Alboraya, which skirts the city to the northwest. The place is like a horchata theme park with huge, palatial horchaterías all along the main street, the jewel in the crown being ‘Horchatería

Daniel’, named after its founder Daniel Tortajada, the most famous orxater of them all. He started off with a small bar in the centre of the village before moving to the present vast hall serving, along with horchata, all manner of ice creams and sweet cakes all made on the premises. Most Valencians enjoy a good fartón with their horchata, a long sausage-shaped sweet bun covered in icing. Apart from having a name that cries out for infantile jokes, it’s perfect for dunking into your drink. Horchatería Daniel has served horchatas to kings, princes, writers and stars of stage and screen. The walls are decorated with photos of Daniel with football stars and the likes of Camilo José Cela and Salvador Dalí. Hemingway also came here but refused a horchata and had a glass of wine instead. If you, like Mr Hemingway, prefer something a little more alcoholic you might want to try Agua de Valencia, a mix of orange juice, cava, cinnamon, sugar and then anything from Cointreau to vodka that the bar owner fancies throwing in. It’s one of those drinks that, if you go too fast, feel like nothing

much at all until you try to stand up. Tying in nicely with the Valencian love of communal paella culture where everybody eats from the same dish, Agua de Valencia is usually served in a large pitcher and everyone gets a glass. Unlike its British cousin the Buck’s Fizz, it has no ‘Hooray Henry’ connotations. It’s a popular and relatively cheap way for a group of friends to start an evening or an excellent accompaniment to watching the dusk settle from a terrace on the Plaza San Jaime or Plaza Negrito in the historic centre.

“Tonight we’re having Agua de Valencia”, and he concocted the lovely Levantino liquor there and then. It quickly became the house speciality.

There are many different claims as to who invented the drink (some say it was invented in Radio City in C/ Santa Teresa) but most people seem to agree that it all started at the now defunct ‘Cervecería Madrid’ (just off C/ San Vicente). So the story goes, back in 1959 when Cervecería Madrid was a smoky little piano bar, some of the regulars were from the Basque country. They were continuously harping on about the joys of their homeland and whenever they ordered the best house cava, they called it “Agua de Bilbao”. One night, sick of their boasting, the owner declared,

Then there is the old and not very hilarious joke, “If Agua de Valencia is this good, it’s no surprise that there’s no water left in the riverbed”. It would probably be wise to wait until everyone’s had a few glasses of the stuff before you tell that one, though.

It later spread to other bars in the Barrio del Carmen in the early ‘70s, made popular by the (champagne) socialist hippies towards the end of the dictatorship who used to enjoy a glass of Agua de Valencia when they weren’t dodging the ‘grises’ (armed police) or watching the umpteenth screening of Eisenstein’s ‘Battleship Potemkin’.

SEBASTIAN MELMOTH In the late 19th century, Oscar Wilde was convicted for a very public scandal and was singled out by the righteous fingers of morality, heavily influenced by the laws of the time. After being freed from Reading Prison, he spent some time in private seclusion, and the Irish writer was forced to change his name. For this period of life, he chose the name Sebastian Melmoth in honour of Saint Sebastian and in reference to the arrows that adorned the saint’s body that reminded him of the arrows of his prision uniform. He chose the surname Melmoth in honour of the Gothic novel ‘Melmoth the Wanderer’. Wilde was then plunged into oblivion, an impoverished exile on the back streets of Paris until the end of his days. The story behind this name inspired the

Spaniards Laura Soriano and Roberto Martín to name their project ‘Sebastian Melmoth’, which is located at C/ San Fernando, 17, near the Mercado Central of Valencia and the Octubre Cultural Centre. As two 21st century wanderers, they have travelled around the globe seeking to bring back elegant objects that are different and special to their small, bright space. You will find strong and subtle designs that are striking and distinctive. Check out their unique stationery items like notebooks or pens from Lithuania, Portugal and Germany. Enjoy their Japanese ceramics and Swedish soaps without forgetting products made in Spain and Valencia, as well as the creations by new designers. They also feature works like Artefacto dishes, scarves by the artist María Ramírez, and postcards & notepads commissioned from artists like Ricardo

Cavolo or Miu Mirambell and a selection of original books. They often organize exhibitions on the first floor of their premises. On their walls they have exhibited works by artists like Angela Dalinger, María Herreros and from the local gallery PLAS. ‘Sebastian Melmoth’ is definitely a different and necessary space for a city like Valencia that is destined to be part of the vanguard of Europe in design. UKE Roberto, tell us something about your experiences from the time of your band ‘Niza’ to the present day with your musical duo ‘Uke’. I’ve always been connected to music. It’s a typical story, you start a band at school, which develops until it eventually starts to go nowhere. Later we formed Niza, which had a bigger audience and the group got to be quite well-known. When the project ended, Laura and I formed ‘Uke…it’s something more special, it’s not for all tastes and it’s not necessarily an easy type of music to listen to. During all this time, I’ve been involved in music as a DJ, promoter, selling T-shirts, making soundtrack music for cinema and commercials, running a record label and owning a club, too. What was it like playing live in Japan? They have been marvellous experiences with Niza as well as Uke. The Japanese public is very respectful, affectionate and curious…when someone is playing on stage everyone is attentive and it is something to be grateful for. It’s a real contrast to the way things often are in Spain. 3. What is the difference between living in Valencia and living in Madrid? There are pros and cons…Madrid is where everything is happening and if you are doing something, it’s where you are supposed to be. On the other hand, things are more difficult there and take longer to develop, just as there is a great cultural choice of things to do in the capital. In Valencia, everything is slower and it’s a disadvantage and an advantage. It’s the perfect place to live;

to stroll around…you can go pretty much anywhere by walking without waiting an hour and a half to arrive, wasting your life sitting on a bus. 4. Can you explain the sound and the influences of your band Uke? We’ve gone through various stages. To begin with, we focused on experimenting with analogue sounds as much as digital. We used effect pedals, toy instruments and loops. It ended up being a crazy situation for us as a duo because we were playing as many as 25 instruments onstage. It made it very difficult to continue and so we decided to focus on the basics of a song (the music and words) with just a voice, acoustic guitar and piano. Those instruments were always part of the Uke sound but we are happier with what we are doing now, as it is a more primitive sound and we can emphasise the lyrics of la canción. Can you take us through the key songs of your most recent album, ‘Yo Era Cigarro’? Montañas This is one of the last songs we recorded for this album. We had the music but not the words. Normally, when I compose, I do the music first by developing the melody and then later the lyrics. I have always found the lyrics more difficult to do, which is why I tend to leave them until last. Sometimes I develop ideas over months and others come instantly. “Montañas” was one of those. A couple of days before we went into the studio to record, I began to jot something down and the words just came out by themselves, all in one go. It’s the only song on the album that combines the three instruments of acoustic guitar, piano and electric guitar. We wanted

the album to be raw, with a minimum of instruments. Humo It’s the first song that I thought about doing when making this album. I wanted to do a blues, I’ve always like that kind of music and wanted to give it a go but this came out as the result instead. Smoke is a metaphor for how volatile everything is. For Laura and myself, smoke and tobacco are important parts of our lives. Adiós I’m obsessed with death. When I was young I would toss and turn at night, unable to sleep because of my obsession, although now my perspective about death has changed. Over the years, friends of mine have passed away and I wanted to write a song about them, from their point of view. It’s a type of requiem and tribute to them as well. It really is my favourite of all the songs that I’ve written. You have a new record out in the autumn. What are your musical plans for 20152016? We’ve recorded a 7-inch single on vinyl that will be released on our own record label, ‘El Milenarismo’… it’s called “El Tiempo de los Asesinos”. We’ve collaborated on the song with various musician friends, including Matt Swanson, Tony and other lads from the band Lambchop, as well as Monk Parker from Nashville and Yanara Espinoza from Papaya. BEETROOT HUMMUS WITH CHICKPEA PANCAKES By Linda Westwater La Ola Fresca Nearing the end of the summer holidays, if you need a little boost to combat the heat of Valencia and get you back in the pink of health, beetroot could be just the vegetable for you! Truly deserving of the title ‘super food’, it boasts potassium, magnesium, iron, vitamins A, B6 and C, folic acid, carbohydrates, protein, antioxidants and soluble fibre. It is said to relieve muscular aches and pains, lower blood pressure and may aid blood flow to the brain to keep you snappy to go back to work. Plus with that psychedelic pink, who could have the post-holiday blues? It combines well with chalky cheeses, such as feta and goat, both oily and white fish, beef and lamb. Beetroot is a vegetable slow to lose its vitamins and nutrients with cooking, but it is also great raw… to use in juices and salads. You can also chop it into wedges to roast in the oven or boil it unpeeled until soft and slice thinly like carpaccio or use with pickled with vinegar. Here, for this recipe of ‘Beetroot Hummus’, we use the beetroot lightly boiled and serve it on celiac-friendly pancakes made with chickpea flour (gram flour), topped and garnished with rocket leaves (N.B. – you will need to mix the ingredients for the pancakes together the night before you are going to cook them).

Beetroot Humus & Chickpea Pancakes Ingredients

Chickpea flour pancakes (leave to ferment overnight) • 25 gm rolled oats (not jumbo) • 1 handful dried fruit of your choice (dates, apricots, raisons) • 500 gm chickpea flour (gram flour / harina de garbanzos) • 400 ml cold water • Salt • Cumin seeds • Coconut oil / ghee or oil of your choice to fry pancakes • Mix all the ingredients together, stir well and leave overnight in the bowl to ferment. The next day stir well. Heat a shallow frying pan with a little oil and fry the flatbreads to the size of your choice. These will keep well in the fridge for a few days or in the freezer, so make a batch at the time. Beetroot humus • 2 medium sized beetroots (boiled unpeeled for about 30 minutes) • 100 gm boiled chickpeas (or half jar drained and rinsed) • 1 tablespoon tahini paste • 1 clove garlic • 100 ml olive oil • 2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 clove garlic, crushed • Sea salt to season Topping • Rocket salad leaves • Cumin seeds and a little olive oil fried lightly for dressing the salad

Blend all the ingredients in a food processor until smooth, adjusting seasonings to taste. Top with rocket salad, lightly dressed with lightly fried cumin seeds. Serve on the freshly Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

I MADE THIS! A MORNING AT ESCUELA DE ARROCES Y PAELLA VALENCIANA (Warning: This article contains spoilers) If you were to ask a Valencian what his favourite dish is, his answer would surely be paella. If you are invited on a Sunday for lunch at a Valencian’s house, chances are the first thing that will be said to you as you walk in the door is, “You like rice?” And once inside the flat, or in the garden if it is a house, it will be a male member of the family making paella. D and I have been living here in Valencia for a very long time, but I can count on the fingers of one hand, the times either of us have been allowed to prepare a paella – “Impossible, you are extranjero! (a foreigner)…You cannot make a proper paella, it’s impossible!” Our guests would prefer to take over the reins and prepare our lunch for us than to suffer a secondrate paella at the hands of a guiri (similar to grockle or tourist in the UK). You cannot play around with a paella Valenciana, it is always made with chicken and rabbit, and is nearly always eaten at lunchtime… I hope I am making it clear that the paella Valenciana is sacred, really. I even have a friend whose parents lived in Paris for many © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

years and couldn’t get their Sunday paella to taste right, so when they came to Valencia for family holidays, or when friends from here were visiting them in Paris, they always took Valencia water with them, for the paella. So, it was with great trepidation that we accepted an invitation to Escuela de Arroces y Paella Valenciana (School of Valencian Rice Dishes and Paella) to learn to make a traditional paella Valenciana. I received a call in advance, asking D and I to be at the restaurant for 10.00h, as we would be shopping in Mercado Central for the ingredients first. The escuela is on a quiet side street off C/ Caballeros in the heart of the historic centre, the Barrio del Carmen. We arrived at the same time as a Japanese couple who had signed up for the tutorial. We were shown to a table and offered a drink – coffee, beer, water – by our amiable host/guide/translator for the day, Ivan. There were to be five of us on the course today, Ivan told us, just as the door opened and the fifth guest arrived, a lady from California. We were left to chat amongst ourselves and get acquainted with each other. Our fellow students were from the same computer science conference at UPV (the University of Valencia) but had not previously met. Drinks consumed, it was time for the first activity of the day, a walk through the alleys and streets of the Carmen to the Mercado Central – with the first of what were to be many picture opportunities of the day, Ivan was a one-man paparazzo! On arrival at the Mercado, Ivan gave an excellent, very informative, potted history of the building,

before taking us to various stalls. Firstly, to buy the different green beans for the dish – we were making a summer paella Valenciana today, as beans are used in the summer and artichokes (alcachofas) in the winter, when the beans get too expensive. Then on to the chicken stall to order the chicken and rabbit we would be using – we would return for it a little later when it was chopped and ready for the recipe. So, on to the pimentón stall, paprika to you and me. Here we bought smoked paprika as we would be cooking our paella over gas, and the smokiness normally imparted by the traditional orange-wood fire would be added in this way. We visited five of the market’s 400-or-so stalls to pick up the ingredients, including the azafrán (saffron), where we learned all about this highly prized and hugely expensive aromatic. Then, having returned to the chicken stall to collect our prepared meat, we made our way back to the escuela/restaurant. Here we were introduced to Beni (José Manuel Benito), the chef, joint owner and technical director (with Jaime Cros Ferrandiz, commercial relations) of la escuela, who would be teaching us today. “I will tell you what to do but you will be preparing your own paellas.” Paellas? “Yes, you will be preparing three paellas, each will feed three people, and you will have a chance, over lunch, to try each other’s paella. First, you must dress like chefs.” Each of us were given an apron and chef’s hat to wear. Beni spoke no English so Ivan translated, and once we were dressed to Beni’s satisfaction, the course began in the spotless open kitchen. He explained that

the type of rice that we were to use was introduced by the Arabs in the 4th century AD and that it was the oldest rice in Europe. The recipe for paella was over 300 years old, came from the huerta (the verdant market garden that surrounds the city to this day) and was originally a recipe for the poor, using ingredients from the land including frogs and duck. Beni is a great teacher; he is amusing and authoritative and took us calmly through all the steps to make our perfect paellas. Whilst the ingredients which we had mixed with an enormous amount of water reduced into a delicious caldo (stock), we took a break and were invited to almorzar (eat elevenses). A delicious tortilla de patatas (a potato omelette which another of the chefs had been making while we cooked) was served with a large slice of Valencian tomato (they are surely the tastiest tomatoes in the world?) followed by clochinas al vapor (steamed mussels) and served with a crisp and cool white wine. Then it was back to the kitchen to add the rice and to stay with the dish until it was perfectly cooked, which involved highly amusing steps and was very entertaining, and back to the table carrying our own paellas, which were arranged in a row as we all sat down to eat. A lovely salad was bought to the table and large glasses of red wine were poured to accompany our meal. Beni encouraged us to

eat it with a spoon directly from the dish – the traditional way – and also to try each other’s as “no paella is ever exactly the same.” He was right, our Japanese friends had made a slightly more al dente version and our Californian friend had made hers a little less salty than ours. While all this was going on the restaurant was filling up with diners just here to eat, it was great to see them looking at our three large paellas being eaten by just five people! And the five people were all wearing chef’s hats. We looked around us at the other diners and decided that the escuela was more than a place to learn to cook. It really is a place to eat, and to eat very well – the food and service looked great.

Was I embarrassed when D and I were asked to stand up and receive our diplomas and our wooden spoons? Strangely enough, I was actually very proud that we had managed to make what turned out to be one of the better paellas we’ve eaten in this fair city – and believe you me; we’ve eaten a lot of them.

AL CANTONET Deep in the heart of the Barrio del Carmen, Valencia’s historic centre, you will find ‘Al Cantonet’. It’s the Valencian name for ‘little corner’ and claims to be one of the narrowest bars in the world. Luckily, it has a great terrace outside so you can enjoy the bar inside or at an outside table as a couple or in small groups. This is a tasca and tapas bar that is authentically Spanish and a world away from the tourist traps of the centre. It’s quite well hidden away but not impossible to find! Owner Carlos, a highly popular local of Andalusian descent, is a lover of good food, good wine and good music. He is well-known in the barrio and has already established himself with the nearby El Olivo tapas bar. The music soundtrack at Al Cantonet is quality jazz and blues and you will find cool posters & photos of musicians like Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and Billie Holiday lining the walls. The inside bar is intimate, with a good view of the leg of ham ready to cut, fresh hanging garlic & peppers and a big bowl of tomatoes, oranges, and lemons, too. On tap, to start off the evening we enjoyed a refreshing Estrella Galicia 1906 toasted beer, which lasted us through a fair portion of the four tapas dishes that we shared over a relaxing couple of hours on this mellow Saturday night. our friendly and helpful waitress, took us to our retro wooden table & chairs on the long terraza, an intimate space with a candle-lit lantern above our mesa and flowers adding to this atmospheric night out.

savoured this healthy dish, we enjoyed a couple of glasses of superb red wine that had been recommended by the boss. It was a Tridente Mencía Crianza (Castilla y León). It was quite full-bodied and left a very satisfying taste on the palate.

Served on tabla dishes (small wooden platters), we started off the night with a Mexican-style Patatas Cantonera, which were slightly crunchy potatoes (with skin) that were cooked al horno (in the oven). We dipped the chip-style potatoes with ease into a pleasant and mild chimichurri style sauce with onion, tomato and vinegar. In our olive bowl, the jalapeño chili peppers had a nice little kick to accompany our cervezas.

With a bluesy number by the late, great B.B. King in the background, we opted to pay homage to the recently deceased musician with a dish of Jamón reserva de Extramadura. This was a very thick ham from the south of Spain that was tasty, consistent and surprisingly smooth, too. It sure was fun to share it with our increasingly heady vino tinto! This was a very pleasant way to finish off our memorable dinner. Do check out this secret corner of Spain when you can…

Our next choice was the cheese dish of Queso romero with slices of apple. The tabla was lovingly presented with scattered brown pine nuts. Decorated with rosemary herbs at the edges, the cheese was soft and full with a very even feel and with a subtle tang that contrasted nicely with the fresh manzana pieces. For our salad, we chose a refreshing ‘Tomate Valenciano’, which consisted of Valencia’s famously huge country tomatoes with distinctive white onion rinds, a rocket salad, salted avocado slices and a subtle vinaigrette. THE KIDS, THE BUFFALOS AND THE ANTIAIRCRAFT GUNNERS Expectations are always high amongst fans at the beginning of a new campaign and this is certainly true of the Valencia supporters who, at last, have a genuine belief that their team will be a force to reckon with in La Liga and Europe this season. Successful loan signings (from last year) João Cancelo, Rodrigo Moreno, André Gomes and Álvaro Negredo are now permanent fixtures at Mestalla. In July, the club continued their policy of buying youth by raiding the transfer market to acquire Santi Mina, Zakaria Bakkali and Danilo Barbosa from Celta Vigo, PSV Eindhoven and SC Braga, respectively. The horrendous injury to Diego Alves at Almería in the last game of the 2014/15 season will keep him sidelined for a number of months and also left Valencia light in the goalkeeping department. They plugged this hole by buying Australian international Matthew Ryan from Club Brugge of Belgium for a fee believed to be in the region of seven million euros. With August came the news confirming that one of Valencia’s star players from last season, Nicolas Otamendi, wanted to leave, and that the club had been given

the toughest draw possible in the final qualifying phase of the Champions League by being paired with Monaco of France. Valencia now had arguably their two most important games of the season at the beginning of the new campaign. Drawn at home in the first leg, Valencia had the dream start when they went in front on four minutes, courtesy of Rodrigo, who tapped in from inside the six-yard box after a simple cut back from Feghouli. A spell of concerted pressure continued for the home side but an elusive second goal continued to evade them. Gradually, the ‘Monegasques’ grew into the game and, towards the end of the first half, hit the post and had a goal ruled out for an offside that was marginal. The second half started like the first half finished, with the French side on top, and it was no surprise when Pašalić equalised shortly after the restart. With frustration building among the home fans, Nuno introduced Piatti for Rodrigo De Paul and with one of his first touches he had an assist in Valencia’s second goal. A cross from Barragán looked to be going over the by-line but the little Argentinian managed to keep the ball in play and guide it back into the path of the oncoming Parejo, who made no mistake from close range. With the fans back on side and the Curva Nord in full voice, Valencia pushed to extend their lead and their support was rewarded with four minutes to go when Feghouli struck a screaming half-volley into

the top corner of the Monaco net. A two-goal cushion going into the second leg was the final outcome, and the players now changed their focus to concentrate on the start of La Liga and a tricky away fixture in Vallecas. The two league and two Copa del Rey fixtures between Valencia and Rayo produced 16 goals last year, but neither club could break the stalemate this time around, despite several clear-cut chances for both sides. Straight after the game, thoughts once again immediately turned to the second leg of the Champions League against Monaco. Unsurprisingly, Valencia’s ticket allocation was almost immediately sold out. Fourteen coaches headed north and, for a day, Monaco was awash with the colours of Los Chés. The Stade Louis II Stadium had been a good stomping ground in the past for Valencia, as it was the venue where the club had beaten Porto in 2004 to win the UEFA Super Cup. Once again Valencia came out of the starting blocks with intent and purpose and the travelling fans were rewarded almost immediately when Negredo latched onto a poor back pass from Fabinho and sublimely chipped the Monaco goalkeeper Subašić to give his team a crucial away goal. Monaco hit back within 15 minutes however, when Valencia failed to deal with a cross and defender Raggi hit a low shot from just inside the penalty area that evaded everyone. Valencia remained composed throughout the rest of the first half and went

As time became a major factor in the second period, the visitors began to sit deeper and deeper in their own half, settling for what they had.

After the euphoria of a favourable draw had subsided a little, next up was the arrival of Valencia’s first La Liga home game with Deportivo La Coruña. The game was a frustrating affair as los Blanquinegres dropped two points in a disappointing performance. The Galicians took the lead through Lucas Pérez only for the hosts to draw level on the stroke of half-time through Negredo.

In the 75th minute things changed and a grandstand finish was set up as Ryan could only parry a free kick into the path of substitute Elderson, who gleefully accepted the chance to put the home side in front. Valencia continued to defend stoutly, but six minutes of injury time did little to appease fears of Monaco scoring another goal that would force extra time. Finally, the Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli, who officiated the 2014 World Cup Final between Germany and Argentina, blew his whistle and the players and fans celebrated their two-legged victory all the way back to Valencia. No sooner had the fans arrived home from Monaco after their 12-hour coach journey did the attention once again return to the little principality, where the group stage draw was taking place. Valencia, in pot 2, received favourable news as they were paired with Zenit St. Petersburg, Olympique Lyon and Gent of Belgium. Zenit are the first opponents to come to Mestalla. The club from St Petersburg are known as the ‘Zenitchik’ back home in Russia, which translates to the anti-aircraft gunners, and they are owned by Gazprom, the natural gas giants. Next up at Mestalla in October is Gent of Belgium, affectionately known as ‘the Buffalos’ by their fans, a term that stuck after the original Buffalo Bill and his Wild West circus visited the city at the start of the 20th century. Olympique Lyon of France completes the quartet and they grace Mestalla in early December in the last of the six qualifying matches. Nicknamed ‘Les Gones’ which means ‘The Kids’ in the regional dialect of Arpitan, they are a team on the up and could be the main stumbling block, along with Zenit, to Valencia progressing to the knockout

Valencia’s day of misery was compounded when defender Barragán was shown a second yellow for a clumsy tackle late on in the game, leading to an automatic suspension for the next game at Gijón. With the news of Otamendi’s departure to Manchester City confirmed during the interlude of the two games with Monaco and Barragan’s impending suspension, an opportunity may arise for the two central defenders Valencia bought just before the transfer deadline. 24/7 VALENCIA crowd really makes it worth it. The ceilings are as high as the crowd, and the sound system really gets you in the right mood for an awesome night out.

I can’t quite get to grips with the fact that summer is over...I have had weekends that felt longer than these last three months. But it’s not all bad, September (tune) still feels like summer in Valencia, mainly due to the fact that all the summer clubs are still open, and the weather will still be fantastic. The clubs that shut in May and June will reopen their doors, and there are a couple of new clubs on the scene like Gordo Club (C/ Carlos Cervera, 23) with underground electronic sounds in the trendy barrio of Ruzafa.  For those of you who have just arrived in Valencia, whether it be for a long holiday, work or Erasmus, welcome. To the rest of you, hello again. La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 4) is down by the port. This is probably one of the hippest clubs in Valencia, it attracts the young and alternative crowd with its electro music, and great performances and shows from their resident DJs. With a big stage in front of the main room, the eyes are on the performers who can guarantee an entertaining night. You will want to keep an eye and ear out for a local DJ who goes by the name Elojet!  I first heard him at the FIB last July, and I have been actively looking out for any clubs he plays at. Luckily, this coincides with the opening of a new club, the Magnum Club (C/ San Vicente Mártir, 305)! The big night is on Friday, 18 September and he will accompany Edu Imbernon and Mike Gannu for a night of great electro music. The premise is grandiose to say the least. If you are going, I would highly recommend the VIP section, as it is behind the DJ and the feeling you get facing the Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

The music scene in clubs is changing for the better, the days of incessant reggaeton and Keisha songs featuring Pitbull are over, and being replaced with drum & bass, underground electro, minimal, and new styles which don’t even have a name yet. This means that you can go out, pay for expensive drinks, but actually enjoy the music and atmosphere! Hooray! Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) This club is known for two things, good DJs and, according to said DJs, the best sound system in Valencia for electro and techno. You can go any night and still have a great time. The entrance fee is relatively low, and includes between one and two drinks (beer). Seb Zero, the knight of the night, was there not long ago and hosted a drum & bass night. This is something that you don’t find a lot in Valencia, and you should jump at the chance to experience it next time. Nylon (Gran Vía de las Germanías, 31) might be an interesting club to go to, especially on Saturday nights, because it will start hosting underground electro nights. So the music might be good enough for you to want to go. If you are already missing the summer, and want to relive the Ibiza vibe, look no more, because L’Umbracle (Av. Professor López Piñero, 5) will have an Ibizathemed night on Saturday, 19 September! The entrance is free until 03.00h if you are an Erasmus student and free all night if you are a girl, which is nice if you are a boy and not an Erasmus student (8€ for you). You can go any other night, too, it’s Valencia’s favourite club.  The Basement is organizing a last farewell to the summer and its festivals by bringing people out to a field for a day of partying

amongst the coolest cats in town. The location will remain a secret until just a few hours before the event starts, so you have to buy the tickets online now if you want a chance to go. The price of the ticket, which is from 15€ (more if you want VIP and other cool options) includes a return bus trip to the location from the centre of Valencia. This will be the fourth edition of Día de Campo, and by now they are mastering it, great music, great organisation and a strong community of music lovers. For another farewell, you should go to Ánimas Puerto (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 5) down by the sea…as it will be shutting soon until next summer! If you are into R&B and hip-hop (nothing wrong with that), you will want to go on Wednesday, 23 September. Their resident DJ Lil Wasky will be setting the mood for a long party (the club shuts at 07.30h, so drink a couple of Red Bulls). If you have never been to this club, it’s the brick building with pink neon lights around it at the port, you can’t miss it. It has an upstairs terrace on the roof with a seriously cool layout of curtains and couches, attracting the youngest and hippest crowd of VLC. For just 15€, you can have dinner and open bar and the VIP table is just 80€. And the final farewell is from me to you. It has been great fun writing for this mag, and I will truly miss it. But like most things, change is imminent (unless, of course, we are talking about Jason Statham movies). So goodbye, Valencia, I am sure we will meet again. Wills Matt

LAMAR HERRIN Could you tell us something about your background and experiences? I first wanted to be a professional baseball player, then an actor. But I was never much of an actor. While working on a film called ‘Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’ for eight weeks (I was the sonar operator in a submarine), I got so bored by the tedium of it all that I began to read and read. Thomas Wolfe and especially William Faulkner, to name two authors. That was when the balance began to tip. I went back to school, to make a living became a teacher of literature and creative writing (29 years at Cornell University), and wrote fiction when I could. Could you tell us something about your time as a Hollywood actor that included working on a film with Elvis Presley? See the above. There was a lot of posing and preening and I simply didn’t have the stomach for it (nor much talent). What brought you to Valencia and could you tell us about your book, ‘Romancing Spain’?

For any budding novelists, do you have any useful tips for how to write a novel?

I wrote ‘Romancing Spain’ precisely to answer that question when asked at dinner parties by friends, “How did you meet your wife?” I met her brother on the boat coming from NYC in December of 1969. I wanted the experience of crossing the Atlantic for the first time on a boat. My brother-in-law, a fine painter and at that time something of a dandy, invited me to travel southern Spain with him in a search of a castle he could convert into an arts centre. I thought he was crazy, but then he showed me photographs of his sister and I didn’t care whether he was crazy or not.

Add to them the fact that it involves a lot of mulish effort, everyday ploughing, say, one more row in the field. Nothing romantic about it. Lasting power and a dogged (or mulish) belief in yourself and faith in what you are doing.

What is your most recent book ‘Fractures’ about?

You are quoted as saying, “For a novelist, no one is a wholly human anything. It’s not that we all have our dark sides, but we do have other sides, contain other selves, and there are always rifts.” In what novel have you explored these conflicts?

In a nutshell, the fractures created in a family when confronted by the decision of whether to lease their land for natural gas exploration (‘hydrofracking’) or not. But since I had been living in Ithaca, New York for more than 30 years, I thought the time had come to set something here. So the novel is also about me coming to terms with the people and the land hereabouts.

I’d have to say in all of them (although that comment probably refers directly to the fanatical Stonewall Jackson that Robert E. Lee carries inside himself in the novel ‘The Unwritten Chronicles of Robert E. Lee’). And, then, it is famously true, I’d say, that a novelist’s characters are all facets of himself. ‘Fractures’, for instance, has six third-person narrators, and I suppose I was each of them for a while.

How does living in Spain compare to living in the U.S.A.?

Could you tell us about any books in the pipeline and your future plans?

Again, I’d need another book to answer this question, but let’s say the theatre of endless street life vs. the spectacle and the vastness of nature. The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York is, with its gorges and waterfalls and deep glacial lakes, particularly beautiful.

I have a not very long novel presently called ‘Father Figure’, which deals with a son trying to understand his father’s behaviour in a famous battle of WWII. I have always been drawn to an imaginative engagement with history, seeing just how far an author can take it before it becomes an unpardonable expropriation.
