The moon of Valencia is no ordinary one. There are a number of tales about its power and charm. In olden times, if you got back too late, you were left outside the city gates of Valencia that were always closed at a particular hour of the night. So, you had to put up with being locked out and settling down on the grass for a night’s sleep in the open air with only the Valencian moon as company. Or as they say around these parts: “ …quedarse con La Luna de Valencia.” This is a city that has the tendency to march to the beat of a different drum. Valencia’s clubbing nightlife and its culinary culture is legendary in Spain and its welcoming weather partly explains its frivolous and fun attitude to life. You could argue that, inadvertently, Valencia has quite a refreshingly Buddhist attitude to life… don’t get too attached to anything and live only in the present! We believe in good karma and we therefore dedicate this special October edition to our Food writer and chef, Helen Westwater, who is justly celebrating the fifth anniversary of her highly popular ‘La Ola Fresca’ Delicafé, which is set in the hip and happening barrio of Benimaclet. Enjoy her tasty recipe for ‘ French Chocolate Cake’ for welcoming boosts of energy as the nights draw in! Our expert restaurant of the month reviewer, Tim Birch, enjoys a beautiful dinner in good company at ‘Pico Fino Gastrobar’ overlooking the cathedral. In ‘Valencia Music’, we have an exclusive interview with one of the world’s most talented

yet grounded ‘double bass’ players, Matt Baker, who plays jazz in various projects as well as classical music with the Palau de Les Arts de Valencia orchestra. In ‘Clubland’, Julia Matt checks out what is new or popular from the old town to La Rambleta to Ruzafa and more! Enjoy exclusive photos of ‘24/7 Valencia Party People’ by professional photographer Juan Ortega. October is a fertile month to enjoy Valencia’s fruits and riches. Check out our feature article on the oranges of Valencia and their importance to the region… A wise person once said that: “arrogant people are never satisfied with life while the humble celebrate life”. So… be thankful for your friends & family, celebrate the day and enjoy the night! 24/7 Valencia Team “Well, it's a marvellous night for a moondance With the stars up above in your eyes A fantabulous night to make romance 'Neath the cover of October skies And all the leaves on the trees are falling To the sound of the breezes that blow And I'm trying to please to the calling Of your heart-strings that play soft and low You know, the night's magic seems to whisper and hush You know, the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush Can I just have one more moondance With you, my love?..." Navel Gazing: Valencia, the Orange City For many northern Europeans, the first time you hear the name Valencia it is in connection with oranges. For well over a century, sweet oranges and mandarins have arrived from Valencia, traditionally bringing a bit of exotic sunshine to the dark northern winter. Oranges play an important role in the history and economics of the city, its streets and gardens are lined with orange trees and the fruit has become an easily identifiable symbol of the region. Spain remains the biggest producer and exporter of oranges in Europe and the Mediterranean and the fifth biggest in the world. Seventy-five percent of Spanish production comes from the Valencia Region. More oranges are grown in Valencia than the rest of Europe and the North African Mediterranean coast put together. Oranges were first introduced to Valencia by the Moors in the 10th century. The Moorish sultans brought orange trees to Spain principally as an ornamental decoration for their palaces and mosques, filling their gardens with the aroma of the orange blossom. The

Patio de los Naranjos, a spectacular courtyard planted with orange trees, was built for the great mosque at Córdoba and the mosques at Seville and Valencia both had their own ‘Court of the Orange Trees’.

with Valencian trade with the south of France, the trade spread to the rest of western Europe. In 1851, the first 50 boxes of Valencian oranges were sent to Britain, to the house of a Mr. Daniel Rogers in Liverpool.

It wasn’t until the 18th century, however, that Valencians began to consider oranges as a serious business option. The first person to see the commercial value of sweet oranges was a Catholic priest, Father Vicente Monzó Vidal, who started a plantation of orange trees in Carcaixent in 1781. Father Vicente did a roaring trade and the city’s businessmen quickly became interested. Over the following decades, plantations began to appear all around the Valencia region. Valencian agriculture had always been productive but it was still largely based purely on provision for the city itself and, to a lesser extent, for the court at Madrid. Along with the commercialisation of the rice fields, the development of orange production was a turning point in Valencian economic history.

The industrial revolution in Europe and the burgeoning urban populations increased opportunities for export. Technological advances like steampowered boats and railways meant that oranges could be despatched and arrive to northern European cities in a matter of days. The discovery of the importance of Vitamin C to combat diseases of malnutrition further increased demand. By the end of the century, Valencian sweet oranges and mandarins became the winter fruit of choice from the south of France to Scandinavia.

By the start of the 19th century, Valencian businessmen began to see opportunities for sale and export. No longer just a means of feeding the city, agriculture suddenly became big business. Valencian oranges were soon on sale in markets all over Spain. Throughout the 19th century, starting

All of this had a profound effect on the Valencian economy. The orange trade financed huge urban development projects in the city. The Ensanche (the area from C/ Colón to the Gran Vía Marqués del Turia) was built to house the newly rich merchant classes, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento with its modern, “European style” buildings was developed, the port was expanded with its new ‘Modernist’ docks, and new public markets and railway stations were built, all down to the humble orange. When you visit these buildings today,

look out for the oranges and orange tree motifs, which decorate their facades as a lasting symbol of what was driving the economy at the time. You don’t have to travel far in any direction out of the city before you find yourself amongst the orange groves and evidence of the fruit’s influence on Valencia is everywhere. The coastline, which stretches from Valencia to the north of Castellón, for example, is dubbed the Costa Azahar or ‘Orange Blossom Coast’. Valencians themselves of course love their oranges, they consume on average five times more per person per year than people in the United Kingdom. The orange blossom is traditionally associated with good fortune and the flower is always present in Valencian bridal bouquets, a tradition which has spread throughout the rest of Spain. And, after the marriage, you affectionately refer to your husband or wife as “the other half of my orange”. There is even a type of orange named after the region, the ‘Valencia Late’ orange. It was actually developed by an American, William Wolfskill, on his farm in Santa Ana in California. He gave the variety its name as a tribute to what he considered the best orange-producing region in the world.

The influence of the orange also stretches as far as football and politics. Although the football team usually plays in black and white, the change strip is often orange and many supporters wear orange to the matches. The preseason tournament that Valencia CF hosts every year is known as the Trofeo Naranja. Vicente González Lizondo, the late leader of the now defunct Valencian regionalist party, Unión Valenciana, was famous for displaying oranges in front of his seat and holding the fruit up in his hands as a symbol of Valencia while making apocalyptic speeches to the national Parliament.

In the coming years, we may see further reduction in orange production in the region and its economic importance is already diminishing, but our beloved sweet citrus fruit is a big part of what made this city and the enduring role of the orange as a symbol of Valencian identity is secure.

This, however, may not be the best time in history to be a Valencian orange producer. Valencian exports, especially of navel oranges, have decreased dramatically since the summer of 2008 due to a huge increase in production and export to the European Union from the southern hemisphere countries, principally Uruguay, Argentina and South Africa. In some cases, prices have dropped so low that it has become unprofitable to even harvest the oranges. This has led many farmers to throw in their lot and sell out to the developers. Until the recent recession, orange groves were being routinely chopped down to make way for tower blocks and holiday villas.

MATT BAKER

MATT BAKER

Could you tell us something about your background and musical education? I actually started at the age of six with the piano but from the beginning had an idea that this wasn’t the ideal instrument for me. I had asked to play drums and my parents wisely told me to start with the piano… a smart move for them I imagine! Then, around the age of nine, I went to a classical guitar lesson that my brother was taking and saw the double bass in the corner. I asked what it was and my brother’s teacher offered me one free lesson on it. From there on out I was hooked. My first idea with the double bass was that I wanted to play jazz but I was told that in order to do that, I had to learn classical technique. So I began on that path and found that I really enjoyed classical music on bass. By the age of 11, I finally started to dabble in jazz and have kept up both as an equal interest to this day. On the recommendation of my teacher, I auditioned for my local professional symphony, the Sioux City Symphony, and at the age of 13 won the job for section bass. Two years later, the principal job came up and I was promoted to that post after auditions. The Sioux City Symphony was an amazing opportunity for me – I began to fully understand the impact of working Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

professionally as a musician at such an early age. At the same time, I was very fortunate to be around jazz legends such as Ryan Kisor or Mike McKenna who were themselves just finishing high school at the time in the same city. On top of that, one of the greatest jazz trumpet players of all time, Clark Terry, ran a jazz course near my home so I was able to tap into the resources there. For growing up in a rural community in the middle of the US, I was extremely fortunate to have all those opportunities within reach! Towards the end of high school, I began taking summer courses with the renowned bass soloist Gary Karr, who was the one who really convinced me that I should pursue a career in music. If it weren’t for him, I probably wouldn’t be doing this today. After high school, I went to study for two years at the Eastman School of Music. I was gigging five days a week in jazz as well as completing my classical studies there and that was really the crucible where I did my time in jazz, playing the clubs, playing the jam sessions and studying with some great musicians. However, after a few years I realized that I needed an education that was a little more performance focused and as a classical musician in the US, I was being funnelled down the path of only playing orchestral music. I wanted something more open, with chamber music and jazz as much a part of

my education as the traditional methods, so I transferred to the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, and finished my bachelor’s degree there. Between the RNCM and my post-grad at the Royal Academy of Music in London, I gained experience in just about every possible musical style and I think that is what really remains one of my great influences today. Describe for us a typical month as a musician at the Palau de Les Arts in Valencia... One of the things that I love about my job at Palau de les Arts is that there is no typical month. We play operas but we also do symphonic projects, foreign and national tours and with the new Berklee Valencia School of Music, there has been quite a bit of collaboration between our musicians and the students there. Also the Palau differs from many other orchestras, which is something I was looking for. Whereas some orchestras repeat the same schedule and programming over and over again, what I was looking for was a job that was diverse both in its programming and scheduling and that would give me the occasional time to spread my wings and do some of my own projects. Without this, I wouldn’t feel as if I could work on continuing to develop as a musician. What is it that makes classical music so special? Tell us about your new classical string quintet.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 11

MATT BAKER Classical music is a broad term that can involve anything from music from 1500 to music of today. What I enjoy about playing music that might be termed ‘classical’ is trying to make it relevant to the audience today. As a performer I don’t just want to play for myself but feel I have to engage the audience on some level and give to them what I might feel about the music and the ideas and feelings it evokes. My new string quintet, the Elan Quintet, was formed by members of the orchestra at Palau de les Arts and started simply as a group of friends enjoying playing the Dvorak string quintet together. However, we were offered a concert with this piece and had to search for a complementary work in the same programme. We discovered a composer from the days of Beethoven, George Onslow, who had been nearly forgotten and was only just coming back into the circles of classical music. His quintets are beautiful and in their day were considered the equal of Beethoven or Mendelssohn. So we performed one of these quintets and after an overwhelming audience reception, started to embark on an exploration of the remaining 28 quintets of his as well as other music for that ensemble. The international classical record label, Naxos, saw a promotional video that Alex Baker did for us and offered us a contract for recording two quintets for them, with the possibility of completing the cycle of all of his quintets. We’ve been working to promoting the ensemble and I am looking forward to a very bright future for the group, I hope! Another recent event in classical music for me is that I have been invited back to perform as a soloist with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra where I began my classical career. I am performing a piece originally written for violin by Paganini but also premiering a new piece by Valencian composer Andrés Valero Castells. It really is a great honour for me and brings me around full circle to how my career began. What is it that is so rewarding about jazz for you? I’ve always enjoyed jazz, and actually I started the double bass in order to start playing jazz. I suppose it’s part of my heritage and I grew up in an environment where I was surrounded by great jazz musicians – strange

considering I grew up in Iowa! However, my high school jazz band won the national first prize for big bands and from our touring and constant rehearsing it was simply ground into me from an early age. Now, I think I see jazz as an amazing development of classical chamber music. It’s the same really – simply the music isn’t written down. You still have to listen and communicate and relay emotion and feeling. The communication is done by way of soundscapes and tonalities – the only difference is in jazz you can’t predict always where it’s going to go! That’s probably the reason I’ve drifted towards some groups that have specialized more in ‘chamber jazz’ – a genre which is starting to become quite fashionable in the jazz world today. Could you explain to us about your current piano & bass duo, JPMB? JPMB is a duo that has its roots in a meeting organized by the jazz bass teacher at the RNCM in Manchester, Steve Berry, between myself and the pianist John Pickup, who was studying in Liverpool at the time. From that first meeting in 1999 until 2006, John and I rehearsed and performed in duos, trios, quartets or whatever ensemble came up but we always maintained a connection. I think it was in Liverpool with John that I probably first started to venture into the world of chamber jazz. Once I moved to Valencia in 2006, John and I naturally stopped for a while but, on a chance request from John for an impromptu concert in Valencia to fund a trip to see me, we played in the jazz club Jimmy Glass. The response was incredible and we were begged to record a CD. So we worked on the repertoire for a couple of years and last August went to record in La Buissonne Studios near Avignon. It was a great experience and the CD has been really well received. The music this time has specialized in jazz mixed with cinematic music. John has gone on to become a composer of some renown in cinematic and commercial compositions and so his writing for the duo really took us that direction. And the few pieces of mine that we include in the set also lend themselves that way. We have just returned from a tour in Finland and are looking forward to our next tour in Spain this November in Madrid and its environs.

6. Tell us about your latest project, the Fabio Zambelli and Matt Baker Duo... My duo with Fabio Zambelli also had its origins quite a while back. In London, in 2004, I met Fabio while teaching double bass at a school and we played a quick duo concert for the students there. We had an instant connection and Fabio then introduced me to his fellow Italian jazz musicians living in London at that time including Fulvio Sigurta, Mauro Banfi, and Giampaolo Scatozza amongst others. A duo wasn’t really the thing to do in London at the time and we started a quartet that we called Quazamba. The quartet went on until 2012, touring in the UK, Italy, Spain and Switzerland and even performing in the London Jazz Festival with guest artist Dave Samuels. However, with the crisis that hit Europe, touring a quartet based in Italy, Spain and the UK became financially impossible. The group folded but Fabio and I couldn’t really just give up so we began to explore the duo format. The public loved it so we continued experimenting and last year we decided to record it with the Valencian label Sedajazz. We just did our first tour of the album – entitled ‘Train to Laveno’ – and couldn’t have had a better response to the CD. Fabio is a wonderful colleague and friend to work with and we seem to have a common vision for the music. Also Sedajazz has been a great label to work with and I really have high expectations for this project. FRENCH CHOCOLATE CAKE By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca We are happy to celebrate our fifth anniversary this October in La Ola Fresca. To mark the event, I feel I should give away all the highly confidential details of Señor Brownie but, unfortunately for you, I’m not quite that generous! So… instead this month we’re going to dive into a festive chocolate feast, which even gives our Señor Brownie a run for his money. This recipe, borrowed from my friends Chris and Carolyn Caldicott from their book, ‘World Food Café’, is flour-free, so celiac-friendly, but with plenty of butter and real chocolate. If you are feeling a touch melancholy with the start of autumn, it is the recipe to maintain your spiritual equilibrium, although perhaps not on the weighing scales! Preheat the oven to 190C / 375F / gas 5 and grease a 23cm / 9 inch, loosebottomed cake tin well with butter. Start to melt the chocolate and the butter over a large pan of simmering water. Mix together well and set aside to cool. Using a whisk, beat the egg whites until really stiff and the peaks stand up on their own. Still whisking, add the caster sugar followed by the egg yolks. If you can’t get caster sugar, grind granulated sugar in a mixer before you use it. When you have added the egg yolks you should end up with a creamy mixture. Gently spoon the mixture into the prepared cake tin, being careful not to squash the air out of the mix. Bake for approximately 55 minutes. It will rise up a little like a soufflé but will sink back down as it cools. Serve with crème fraîche. The cake is fantastic with pickled cherries or other red sharp fruits. FRENCH CHOCOLATE CAKE Ingredients (serves 8-10) • 225 gm / 8 oz unsalted butter, plus more for the cake pan • 200 gm / 7 oz plain chocolate (of at least 72% cocoa solids), broken into pieces • 6 large free-range eggs, separated • 200 gm / 7oz caster sugar • Icing sugar, for dusting • Crème fraîche, to serve

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

PICO FINO GASTROBAR It used to be a rule of thumb that restaurants in the major tourist destinations around Valencia centre were to be avoided at all costs, good just for a beer and a tapa on the terrace to watch the world go by. Paellas were usually the pre-cooked variety, bland and stodgy, served in little ‘pans for one’ and expensive, too. Serious eating with real food and inventive chefs was done a little way off the beaten track. Things are changing; there are more and more quality food bars and restaurants popping up serving great food at reasonable prices. Our restaurant of the month is one of these new breed – Pico Fino Gastrobar on Plaza de la Reina, one of the most touristy of locations in the city. D and I had had a crazy week and were working late all week so we booked a table for Thursday evening at 21:30h. At that very time I was still en route home from a meeting which overran wildly, I called Marco, the chef, to apologise and to say we would be arriving over half an hour late. He, in turn, apologised to me as he was having to leave early, so wouldn’t be able to meet us but would leave us in the capable hands of Rafa and wished us a happy evening. We arrived just on 22.00h. Pico Fino is at the © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

top of Plaza de la Reina, just next doorbut-one from the Valencia Cathedral. It was a pleasantly warm evening, so we elected to sit on their extensive terrace. The actual gastrobar is small, a bar and a handful of tables in a light and airy space. Rafa explained that our meal would be based on Pico Fino’s Menú de Degustación (Taster menu) and courses would be accompanied by especially selected wines by the glass. To start, a real surprise, El Prosecco! The whole of London is drinking so much of this fizzy wine that I recently read that Italy is having trouble keeping up with demand… Unusual in Valencia, it was a Col de’ Salici extra dry sparkling white wine and it made a nice change. And the first dish of what would end up being eight courses was delivered to the table, a Pincho de ventresca de atún (a ball of tuna and onion with a pipette of chilli oil to season to your taste), a really fresh and mouth-watering starter. Next came Caballa con migas de verano (Marinated mackerel served on a base of ‘summer crumbs’, breadcrumbs soaked in a light vinaigrette), the mackerel salty and delicious and the summer crumbs a perfect foil. Then it was time for another wine, a crisp white from Alicante (Puerto Salinas, a chardonnay muscatel) and with it a pretty, hand-painted ceramic

flowerpot with two small cones poking out of more breadcrumbs. The seaweed cones were filled with guacamole and topped with crisp tempura-ed noodles of finely sliced squid (Conos de guacamole y sepia) great fun, and a great idea for nibbles at a cocktail party, we decided. Rafa did a great job of explaining each course to us as he brought it to the table; the terrace was filling up nicely with both locals and tourists by this time. Our next course was Croquetas de pollo de corral – ubiquitous on any Spanish tapas menu but these tasty little chicken croquettes were a given a twist with the addition of peanuts. A big thumbs up from D in particular, who loves any recipe containing peanuts! Time for another wine, a Carlos Villanueva from Ribeiro, a crisp and delicious white from Galicia made from a blend of treixadura and albariño grapes. A perfect partner to our penultimate course, sardines fillets served on tomato and an Alicante-style pastry (Sardinas con tomate y coco d’Alicante). the sardines and tomato so good together and the ‘coco’ adding a crunch. Our final course was a perfect asparagus risotto (Risotto de asparagus). A really lovely risotto and a great end to a meal. There was one more course to come, a cheesecake. This was no ordinary cheesecake but a deconstructed version with cheesecake foam; wafer-thin crisp biscuits, arandanos (blueberries) and a lemongrass syrup. Mercifully light (we

were quite full by now!) and a nice twist on an old favourite. Pico Fino is four years old. A couple of years ago, the owners and chef Marco decided it was not enough to serve food just to the tourists that visit the city. So they reinvented the whole thing, interior, wines and most of all, the food – to go not only for the tourists but also the local clientele. The formula is a winner; the food is inventive, tasty and beautifully presented, the service attentive and friendly. And best of all it is very well priced. Our meal, ‘The Experience Menu’, is excellent value at 25€ a head including three wines. They are currently open from 12:00h to 24.00h, seven days a week. At lunchtime Monday to Friday, they offer a dish of the day for 7.90€ including drink and coffee.

There is also a ‘Flat Rate Menu’ for 16€, which offers an Ensaladilla Ibérica, Mussels croquettes, Patatas bravas, and an Entrecôte steak. There is a good selection of wines from Spain, Italy and France with prices starting from 3€ a glass. The majority of the list is around the 15€ – 32€ range and a couple of much higher priced wines complete the list. Our meal was from the summer menu and consisted, as you will have noticed, mainly of fish. There are hamburgers on offer and, as winter draws in, more robust meat dishes will be added to the menu. Pico Fino is a gastrobar so as long as it’s not lunchtime, you can take in the sun, watch the world go by on their terrace as you sip from your coffee, beer, glass of wine, vermouth or cocktail – it’s a very

nice place to be! VALENCIA FOOTBALL

Champions League

VALENCIA FANS CONTINUE TO EXPECT Valencia CF have continued to produce lukewarm performances in recent games that have already led to sections of the Mestalla feeling a change in management is required, despite the season only being a handful of games old. September started well enough with a trip to Asturias and a contest with Sporting Gijón. The El Molinón stadium is always a tough place to win and Valencia managed to do what Real Madrid could not do a few weeks earlier and collect all three points. A dull game looked to be cruising to a stalemate when substitute Alcácer latched onto a floated ball from another substitute, Bakkali, to head the ball home in injury time and steal all the points for Los Chés.

who can be frustrating at times, picked the game against Valencia to show his undoubted class, and hit two wonder strikes with his left foot from outside the box that gave rookie goalkeeper Jaume Domènech Sánchez no chance. Valencia came back strong in the second half and played arguably their best football of the season in those 45 minutes. A João Cancelo strike and a right-footed effort from the influential substitute, André Gomes, gave Valencia hope of turning the game around with almost 20 minutes left to play. Striving for the winner, Valencia found themselves exposed on the counter-attack and the Belgian international Axel Witsel finished clinically for the Russians on one such break to give Zenit all three points and stun the vociferous Mestalla crowd. Valencia can count themselves unlucky in not getting anything from the game, but the performance left the fans upbeat and expectant of a similar performance against Betis next time round.

From day one this term, the manager Nuno Santos has shown his fondness for rotating the squad at every available opportunity, so it was a surprise to many when he kept the same side as the one that had beaten Sporting for the Champions League clash with FC Zenit St. Petersburg four days later.

The Seville-based club came to Mestalla having made a decent start to life in La Liga after returning to the top flight as Adelante champions. Bolstered with some big name signings like Rafael van der Vaart and former Valencia favourite Joaquín, the Andalusians came in determined mood to stop Valencia playing their free-flowing football and to restrict the amount of chances for the home side.

Zenit, the top seeds in the group, were two goals to the good by the interval, thanks to Givanildo Vieira de Souza (better known to the football world as Hulk). The Brazilian,

This they did to good effect in a drab first half. Early in the second half, the visitors went down to 10 men when Dani Ceballos was sent off for a second bookable offence.

The noise levels around the ground increased as Valencia’s domination continued but, by the end of the game, the cheers had turned to jeers and shouts of “Nuno, vete ya” echoed from certain sections of the crowd as the fans voiced their disapproval at another insipid home draw. Nuno reacted by tinkering excessively with the team for the midweek game in Barcelona with Espanyol. The wholesale changes saw Aderlan Santos make his debut and youth given a chance in the form of Danilo, Bakkali and Santi Mina. Cancelo, Gayà, and Pérez completed the new look Valencia team. Mustafi and Orbán were left at home and Feghouli, Alcácer, Negredo, Piatti, Barragán and Parejo were the outfield players warming the substitutes’ bench. Bemused Valencia fans looked on as Espanyol took an early lead through Víctor Álvarez. The anticipated fight back never materialised as Valencia put in their worst performance of the season to date, and consequently, lost their unbeaten league record.

Fans flocked to Mestalla the following weekend for the clash with Granada not knowing what team Nuno planned to unveil.

Once again, the side was a different one, but it was to the majority of the fans’ liking, as it restored Mustafi in the heart of defence, and paired Negredo and Alcácer together in attack from the start for the first time in a while.

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37

However, the performance remained a frustrating one with a solitary goal from Mustafi giving Los Chés the win in an uninspiring performance. At the end the boo-boys once again made their thoughts known, with Rodrigo Moreno and Nuno himself coming in for particularly harsh treatment. The sanctuary of an away game in the Champions League was next on the Valencia calendar and a match-up with Olympique Lyonnais of France. Without the pressure of satisfying a demanding home crowd, the team played with more freedom of expression and creativity. Both sides had a fistful of good chances but it was a well-directed shot from around 25 yards from Feghouli just before half-time that divided the teams. This away win gave Valencia their first Champion League points and put them second in the table behind Zenit after two games. Back on Spanish soil after a fruitful European journey, Valencia had the difficult task of taking on Athletic Bilbao in the wonderful San Mamés stadium. The Basque side were languishing in the bottom three at the start of the game and were in dire need of points from the encounter. First blood went to Valencia when Parejo curled a free kick over the wall and into the top corner of the net on 20 minutes, but an equaliser came soon after when the visitors failed to deal with a Bilbao corner. A flick on

at the near post found centre-back Laporte unmarked at the back to head home unchallenged. Bilbao got stronger as the game advanced and a former favourite of the Valencia fans, Aritz Aduriz, was instrumental in banishing the visitors to their second league defeat of the season. Firstly, he put a sublime reverse pass into the path of Susaeta, for the midfielder to slot pass the advancing Domènech on 60 minutes. He then put the game beyond doubt 10 minutes later, when coolly finishing a sweet move from the Basques that cut apart the Valencia defence. The manner of the loss would not have impressed the watching Peter Lim, and the fans’ patience will continue to get increasingly fragile with similar performances. Levante UD have not enjoyed the month of September either. They managed two home draws at home to Sevilla and Eibar respectively, but crashed 4-1 in the Nou Camp against Barcelona and 3-0 in the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez to Getafe. However, October started on a brighter note for Los Granotas as they climbed off the bottom of the table with a 1-0 victory over table-toppers Villarreal. The Yellow Submarine were reduced to ten men when Jokić was sent off for a second yellow card in the first half. Deyverson compounded Villarreal’s night of misery in the 83rd minute when he fired home a volley from close range, easing worries at

the Ciutat de Valencia stadium. Anyone wishing to watch Valencia or Levante can obtain tickets at the box offices at both grounds, or visit their websites at” www.valenciacf.com Levante UD John Howden FOOTBALL CALENDAR

CLUBLAND

24/7 VALENCIA Thursday at 22.30h. The second outing for this Noche de Micro Abierto (Open Mike Night) will be showcasing some budding musicians sharing their talents, as well as offering a variety of functions such as modern exhibitions and authentic flamenco.

DON’T BE SUCH A TOURIST… Looking for an interesting venue or a cool event to attend? Read on for this month’s best nightlife and whatever else Valencia manages to think up before our next Clubland article is published… With the leaves changing colours, this transition season marks the closing of the terraces and open-air clubs such as the Umbracle, the Cube or the very recently defunct Las Ánimas. So where to retreat to during the autumn? For the first half of the evening, there are always lots of happenings and new locales to explore in Valencia. Now that ‘Oktober’ has arrived, you will be able to start off most evenings between the 9th and 25th by celebrating the Oktoberfest, the international beer festival imported from Bavaria. “Prost” (Cheers) to that! The setting is yet to be confirmed due to delays with local authorisations. Something more ‘local’ is observed on the 9th: the Nou d’Octubre. This oneday commemoration of the Comunidad Valenciana, the Valencia Region, echoes through the provinces of Valencia, Alicante and Castellón. The streets will overflow with music, processions and pyrotechnics. The mocadorà, a marzipan cake, will also be traditionally exchanged between lovers. Now moving towards something more across the board and less sporadic, Radio City, which is located in El Carmen (C/ Santa Teresa, 19) fills up daily with locals and visitors alike. This month it will also be hosting a free musical event every

However if you prefer a quieter start, check out some of the best cocktails in Valencia, in ROA Cocktail Pub, which you will find in the Cánovas area (C/ Salamanca, 8). The small venue manages somehow to create a hub for clubbers, who congregate at the bar before heading out to the dance floors. Although you don’t have to decide quite yet, here is another option for you: Fryda, in the Campanar area (Av. de las Cortes Valencianas, 58). This hotspot is rather distinctive with its restaurant and stylish terrace. It also hosts a disco with three differents vibes (house music and more…), ideal for bigger groups with mixed tastes. Don’t forget that these are mere warmers as things only really come alive after 02:30h in Valencia. So what do people do next? For more musical events, the fourth edition of ‘Deleste’ festival will occur in Espai Rambleta on 23-24 October with internationally recognised DJs and bands like Low, We Used To Pray and local legend Pep Gimeno "El Botifarra". Furthermore, the launch of the 33rpm Bar Club, (C/ Linterna, 11) located beside the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, demonstrates that more jazz and Afro-Caribbean music needed to be presented to the local public. This club will also be compèring theatre and our expectations are high! Open Wednesday to Saturday until 03.30h. In contrast, a new season of clubbing kicks off this autumn with addresses such as the recently re-opened Juanita Club Valencia (C/Jesus, 91), specialised in black music with the combination of reggae and funky DJ sessions. Open Thursday to Sunday from 19.00h until 03.30h. Then don’t forget to come by the self-

described hippest barrio in Valencia. The neighbourhood of Ruzafa offers some of the best underground electro sessions in places such as Club Gordo (C/ Cervera, 23). Valencia might be famous for its nightlife, but it is also one of the best places for exercising out in the open. With its amazing weather and dry riverbed, this running city hosts several dozens of runs each year. For running enthusiasts who wish to combine a night jog and dancing, the Electric Run is coming to Valencia this month. Running 5K in the Turia riverbed in fluorescent kits and makeup might sound like madness, but add to that some of the best DJs and thousands of LEDs and millions of watts of light leading the way, you might just be tempted to sign up. With its energising music, and animators along the entire route, what best way to start off an evening? The event takes place on 24 October. And last but not least… Feeling peckish in the middle of the night? Head straight to the Horno de los Borrachos, literally translated as ‘The Drunkards’ Oven’. This inexpensive bakery is open 18.00h until 06.00h, serving doughnuts and other treats, savoury or sweet. Located in the Ruzafa area, on C/ Sueca, 3. Finally, for a hangover restorative, from a classic continental breakfast to a full English breakfast, La Más Bonita (Passeig Marítim de la Patacona, 11) is located on the seafront where freshly squeezed juices, snacks – i.e. huge slices of Red Velvet cake – or meals with a Mediterranean twist are being served from 08.00h onwards. On that note, “Salud” y “A disfrutar”.

What is your special tour and routes of Valencia about?

Hemingway, while staying at the Hotel Inglés in July, wrote that the “Mediterranean feels like a peed-in bath tub” and that Valencia was a “fine dusty town”. In fact he visited Valencia more than Pamplona, but Pamplona has known how to exploit him. There’s a lovely photo of Welles cooking a paella on the pavement in front of the bullring.

I’m an English and history teacher so it’s normal for me to look at what’s around me, and when I walk along the street I usually look up, where the most interesting stuff is, although the collisions take place below. The routes are designed to discover Valencia and its history and to enable people to practice their English at the same time, especially if they’re from Walthamstow. There’s so much around

Do you have any anecdotes regarding the places that Orson Welles and Ernest Hemingway frequented in Valencia?

Tell us about your tour of ‘La Huerta’ around Alboraya... I’m a great believer in using the resources around us; I’m also too mean

to buy books. Any way to get students out of classrooms is fine by me and this activity is designed to practice all the subjects on the syllabus, for example explaining the chemical process that makes you cry when you peel onions (or watch Valencia CF). Could you recount to us the importance of ‘La Alameda’ in Valencia? The Alameda tour was designed to offer something wheelchair-friendly and to provide a short walk, but one packed with history. It’s interesting that on two occasions when ‛invaders’ (Napoleon & Felipe V) have arrived in Valencia, one of the first decisions was to fix the Alameda. Could you tell us about the digital newspaper you co-run called ‘Valencia International’? When I walked the ‘Camino de Santiago’ in summer 2013, people were always commenting on Valencia as the capital of corruption, so I wanted to show the other side. The newspaper is all about good vibrations, a nice shower on a dirty planet. Also you can listen to the articles, which helps with pronunciation, and we

welcome contributors. The other half of the project is Canadian webmaster Claude Robillard, a talented musician with a cool Neil Young impersonation. Please explain to readers about your new book, ‘A Set Jetter’s Guide to Spain: 101 Locations’. For years I have run www.silverscreen-spain.com along with Juan José Cermeño, a software engineer. This project is designed to promote cinema tourism and shows where over 700 English language films have been made in Spain. The book is a greatest hits, containing 101 of the most significant films, and a desperate attempt to recuperate the vast sums of money lost on this project and on Valencia International. I’ve been presenting the book all over Spain at film locations, and the next one is at Cardona Parador on 17 October, where Welles made ‘Chimes of Midnight’, and then at the Jávea Parador on 14 November. VALENCIA WORLD are nice, food is amazing (try the steak if you happen to be there!) but the problem for me is that it was like living in Australia or New Zealand… wicked, but too far away! Here in Valencia, you can easily book a return ticket to any part of Europe for less than 100 quid and be there in a couple of hours. To get to Uruguay you need around 1,000 euros and 12 hours flying time. And don’t forget that Uruguay is surrounded by giant neighbours, Argentina and Brazil, so even to get to other South American countries, they are far away and expensive. What differences did you find living in Liverpool and London during your time in England?

ADRI CASTELLANOS Tell us something about background and upbringing.

your

I was born in Uruguay to a middle class family in the late 1970s. My parents weren’t rich but they decided that the best present they could give me was a good education, so that’s what they did and why I started learning English at the age of three. I attended one of the finest schools in Montevideo and people like the vice-president’s daughter were my classmates. I was supposed to become a big lawyer or someone like that. Dad never thought that I would discover the Beatles, The Stones or Hendrix when I was 13. That certainly screwed up his plans, as from that moment I just wanted to be a musician or at least an artist. I taught myself to play the guitar and formed many bands as a teenager. I studied advertising and I even got a job in an advertising agency. But one day I realised it was time to meet other people and places. So I decided to move to Europe. How does living in Uruguay compare to living in Spain? Uruguay is a lovely place to live, the weather is very similar to Spain, people Article © 2015 24/ 7 Valencia

Both London and Liverpool are great places to live or at least visit; the difference is the size and the number of people living in there. I love Scousers; they are friendly, witty and have good taste (at least the Red part of the city – wink.) London is incredible, obviously one of the most important cities in the world, with great opportunities for artists in general if you can cope with the routine! But it’s the same everywhere, compare Montevideo and Buenos Aires, Liverpool and London, or Valencia and Madrid and the lifestyle is more laid back in the small cities whereas the big cities can be frantic. Tell us about a typical week as a teacher of English as a foreign language in Valencia… I work in an academy in the evening because most students come to classes after school, university or work. I have ‘in company’ classes in the morning and lunchtime. I used to teach one-toone, too, but now it’s getting more and more difficult with my job as a part-time photographer and the music concerts. I really enjoy teaching; I might even open my own academy in the future, who knows!

with a few photo sessions per month and all the rehearsals and gigs with the different bands and duos that I have. In order to play very often, it’s necessary to have different projects. In my case, I had been playing for years with a pianist as a duo, and sometimes as a trio with a drummer. That project evolved into a five-piece funky/rock/blues band under the name of Saplaya All Stars with the addition of a singer and a guitarist. Last year I also joined a blues band called Nasty Boogie, a household name in the local blues scene with two albums already released, in what seemed to be just a one-night substitution at the time. We had so much fun together that we’ve been playing together since then and we also started a 60s music band called the Whatchamacallits. Our current show is a tribute to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. We also run a monthly jam session in a rock ‘n’ roll restaurant called Peter Rock. I also play as part of many acoustic duos and trios because it’s not very easy to get gigs for bands. Little pubs and restaurants can’t afford to hire bands but on top of that, it’s difficult to get permits for live shows and neighbours usually complain about noise. Hopefully, the situation gets better with the newly elected government in Valencia. You can follow Adri on Facebook and get updates on upcoming concerts and his photography work. Please ‘like’: - Adri Castellanos Photography & Arts - The Whatchamacallits - Saplaya All Stars - Nasty Boogie

Describe for readers your life as a gigging musician in Valencia. It’s very exciting! But also very hard… especially in my case since I teach in the morning and in the afternoon, combined
