It’s been quite a year in Valencia. With a complete change of local government there is now a different outlook regarding just how a city can be run and how its citizens can take an active part in its development. There are also promising signs of foreign tourism in the region growing by the month. A different set of values from the “Me Me Me” generation are evolving and creative concepts regarding local community are finally being seen in a more positive light by the powers that be. Higher vibrations have to be a good thing for all of us! Anyone with a heart loves an underdog and the story of ‘24/7 Valencia’ is the story of David and Goliath. It’s the belief that if you fight for what you believe in, whatever the odds, you can make a positive contribution to the place you live in. So, many thanks to all of our kindhearted readers who have supported us over the years. ‘24/7 Valencia’ has grown to be recommended by the local, national and international press. This includes The Times, The Guardian, El País, CNN.com, LevanteEMV, Time Out and many more…
We take a look at stuff to do over the Christmas and New Year in Valencia. ‘Restaurant of the month’ reviewer Tim Birch enjoys a Spanish dinner at ‘Pare Pere’ in the upmarket zone of Canovas. At the back, you will find an extended agenda with 3 pages of live music and clubbing dates that cover both the months of December and January. In the packed listings you will find information on art exhibitions, theatre & opera dates, recommended chill out spots, traditional pubs, restaurants and so much more… We hope that you have a great break over the holidays and wish you the very best for the coming year. Lots of love from the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team! See you in February 2016! “…May the good Lord shine a light on you, Make every song you sing your favorite tune. VALENCIA WINE
BODEGA MURVIEDRO
WINES FROM THE VALENCIA REGION
Since I last wrote about the wines of Valencia, the market has consolidated well and the rest of the world is beginning to hear about Valencian wines and appreciate them! There are five separate Denominations of Origen covering the Valencia Region and this article looks at each of them, how they are developing and some of the new wines that are emerging. DO Valencia This covers most of Valencia province except the area around Requena. There have been some exciting new developments both in organization and in new wines. The major development has been in a general acceptance that the quality of wine needs to be improved and maintained in all years with less emphasis on the amount of production. This has seen several of the larger co-operatives in particular completely reassessing their range of wines. And there have been new bodegas opening making artisan wines in small amounts. The co-operative Baronía de
Turís held a launch just this week of a range of new wines including two new moscatels, a dry white and a mistela, and two monovarietals from Syrah and Merlot. Classically Valencia has blended its wines or sold them in bulk for blending elsewhere, with only a small percentage of quality wine being retained for bottling. This is changing with bodegas such as the Baronía and Murviedro recognizing that the market now requires wines, which are fruitier, show varietal characteristics and have some concentration. The new market demands single variety wines and bodegas are now investing more in understanding the varieties they have and how the variety performs in different soils. Just last week we were in Ontinyent at the Ontinium Bodega, looking at a parcel of experimental vines and tasting their new range which has achieved precisely what the market wants. Two new bodegas have also opened, one in Ahillas (Terra D’Art) growing Merseguera, the regional white variety, but also recuperating plots of old vines, most of which had fallen out of production. The other, Monsata Perdigón in Pedralba, has recuperated plots of a lost variety, Planta Fina de
Pedralba. Both are making excellent new wines. DO Utiel-Requena This area about 80 km west of Valencia owes its existence to the Bobal variety and wine making has been continuous for the last 2,500 years or more. The DO has been marketing vigorously and has taken Bobal to China, Brazil, Mexico, Germany and elsewhere with great success. It has also seen sales of wines increasing in the home market. The exciting element here is that growers have also been learning about the variety and many new wines have emerged as a result of experimentation, which are selling rapidly. One example is Bobal Alta Expresión, which seeks to maximize flavour and fruit concentration from the grapes. Latorré Agrovinícola and Coviñas (with their wine Adnos) have been introduced to the market with great acclaim from the public and professionals alike. Murviedro have introduced a new line from old vines with different lengths of barrel ageing which have enhanced their range significantly. Nor are the wines expensive. DO Alicante Alicante has long marketed its wines well, with its mix of small traditional bodegas and large cooperatives. Here the developments have been twofold.

BY RICKY WIGLEY
AWARD WINNING WINES FROM THE VALENCIA REGION
The first is the move to understand the principal regional variety better and to develop its production and the quality of wines made. Monastrell (or Mourvèdre in France) has only recently been the subject of an International Congress to compare and consider growing methods and means to improve its production. Unlike Bobal, which grows well only in Requena, wines from Monastrell are made in Australia, California, Greece, France and elsewhere. The second is to the counter the import of Lambrusco from Italy by introducing several ranges of lighter sparkling wines from the Moscatel variety (the other principal variety of Alicante) with alcoholic contents of between 5 and 10% by volume. Marina Alta from Bocopa includes both white and red sparkling wines in this manner in their range and Murviedro also have had some success with their sparkling wines (or espumosos) in international competitions. Many of these are available in the supermarkets at very reasonable prices and have helped increase significantly the sales of bottled wines in the home market. DO Cava It is generally thought that cava is produced in Catalonia but it is actually a national DO with small geographical areas allowed to make wines from
designated varieties. The town of Requena and its hamlets is one of those and supplies about 5% of the cava production in Spain. There is an association of cava producers who have just held their third annual fair in Valencia to tap into the Xmas market. Cavas from Dominio de la Vega and Pago de Tharsys, Chozas Carrascal, UVÉ (Unión Vinícola del Este), Vegalfaro, Torre Oria, Coviñas, Murviedro and Sebirán have been joined by others such as Haya and Finca Casa Nueva. IGP Castellón This is the exciting new wine-producing area now on its trajectory to achieving full DO status. Around 12 bodegas out of the 30 or so wine producers have achieved the quality standards required and a decision is awaited in Brussels following agreement from the Valencian government to create a new DO for the province. We have regularly visited bodegas to taste their new wines at every stage of production. Bodegas such as Vicente Flors, Barón D’Alba, Mas de Rander, El Mollet (Roques Negres), Bodegas Masía de la Hoya, Mayo García and others are producing some very good monovarietals from noble varieties such
as Gewürztraminer, Viognier, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
So where can these wines be bought? Avoid supermarkets such as Consum
and especially Mercadona; sadly they do
not have a good selection of Valencian
wines generally. However Carrefour, El Corte Inglés and Hipercor carry ranges of Valencian wines. There are also many
small independent wine shops, some of them in a group called Els Bodeguers,
who have supplies of the wines from the smaller artisan bodegas. Shops such as La Biosca, Beals, Le Blosen and,
for example, Ca Tino and GourmetGourmet, both in Lliria, carry wines and cavas from Valencia. And tastings? Through our project ‘VÍ vid’ we run tastings in Valencia and in Lliria on a regular basis and the tastings are in
English. If you want a private tasting in your home with a selection of Valencian
wines, we can organize this for you as well. These tastings are generally great fun and we organize the wines, etc. Riki Wigley

THAÏS MORELL
identity in the regions of Brazil and that influences the way we relate to music. Tell us something about your musical influences… The Beatles, Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Paralamas do Sucesso, samba, baião, frevos, cirandas, maracatus and folk music from all over the world! Musically, what were your experiences of your time studying and living in both Finland and Ghana?
Based in Valencia, Thaïs Morell was born and brought up in Curitiba, a city in the south of Brazil. Her second album has just been released on local label, Sedajazz Records. Tell us something about growing up in Brazil… There aren’t any musicians in my family, but since I was a child, I have been interested in and was able to play music. I started playing the piano at 9 years old and at 15 I changed instruments to guitar. I studied music at university and began as a “guitarist who also sings” and finished as the “singer who also plays guitar”. Those were four years of intense learning and discovery. What are the differences between Spain and Brazil in terms of living and working as a musician? There are many differences and, at the same time, it is quite similar. The markets are saturated everywhere. In Spain, it is more typical to go to concerts and clubs or café bars and enjoy music in silence. This is something that does not happen in Brazil unless you are playing in a theatre. Also in Brazil and in Latin America in general, music is more profoundly integrated in the culture and the day-to-day of society than here in Spain. Local music has a very strong Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia
Very intense and revitalizing. To experience very different cultures and other types of music makes you live, see and understand your own culture and your own music in new and intriguing ways. I recommend it to everybody. How do you find Valencia as a place to live in general? It’s a very welcoming city and relaxing, too, the people are very friendly and the climate is perfect with many days of sunshine! I’m very happy here. Can you take us through some tracks of your latest album, ‘Amaralina’? Segura o Tombo da Canoa I got to know this song in 2007. It’s from a folk record from northeast Brazil that I found in the Sibelius Academy library in Helsinki, Finland. It’s a Brazilian folkloric song in the ‘Côco de Embolada’ style, which consists of two singers accompanied by panderetas (Brazilian tambourines), pushing each other to sing faster and rhyming over an improvised theme. The songs always consist of choruses and stanzas, always 10 improvised verses about a theme suggested by the audience. The verses always rhyme 1-4-5, 6-7-10, 8-9! For my record, I chose this track because it has a lush chorus and five stanzas with lyrics that I love. I love the ‘desafio’ arrangement between the instrumentalists (piano and flute) at the end. I love the voices of the chorus!
Brazil! Vestida de Kentê It’s a song that I began in 2013 and finished in 2015. It talks about the strength of women, with diverse references to Ghana where I lived for four months. It makes reference to a woman dressed in kente, a rather special and distinctive Ghanaian fabric, used as clothing for royals. This arrangement has ‘super-groove’ percussion by David Gadea with more than 15 instruments accompanying it. Great solo by RussianCuban Alexey León on soprano sax. ‘Africa-Jazz-Brazil!’ Eles It’s a song that I wrote in Paris in April of 2014. It talks in a poetic way about love, men and their charms and I composed it for the muses who inspire me. A sweet collaboration with Carlos Sanchís on accordion and Mariano Steimberg on brushes. It’s a bossa in 3/4 time… ‘Franco-Bossa-Accordionica!’ Sambhaliji This song is a collaboration with Gustavo Proença (Curitiba, Brazil) and talks about samba and how samba makes us happy, to forget our sadness over a romance that has ended. It’s another marvellous groove by David, inspired by the Arabic khaliji rhythm (sambakhaliji). Stupendous solos by Orlando Bonzi (cavaquinho) and Albert Palau (Rhodes piano) and a great chorus as all good and original sambas should have! ‘Sambárabe-Sambhaliji-Jazz’! Amaralina I got to know this Bahian song (Bahia, Brazil) as soon as I arrived in Valencia in 2009. One of the composers lived here but left the following year. The song is pretty and has a sense of humour. It talks about passion & conquests and is about the beaches of Salvador known as Pituba and Amaralina. I made a new arrangement and a few more verses for this album. Again, superb percussion by

Los Mozos de Monleón I got to know this popular song from Salamanca with this arrangement for four voices in Brazil in 2003, when I was a member of the band Bakaya, a mini-orchestra that covered traditional and folk songs from around the world. We didn’t get around to recording the song with Bakaya and we didn’t sing it very often but I thought the arrangement was beautiful and I never forgot the ‘four voices’. I was enthusiastic about recording it and I did this arrangement in3/4 time, which contrasts with the 6/8

I asked Tere to teach me the song and I took it along to a rehearsal with my band. We were all fascinated by the melody and harmony. My humble version of this song included percussion that was not on the original and a few touches of Brazilian guitar. Albert Palau’s performance on piano stands out!
Valencia-Turkey!’ Pife Torto This is an instrumental by Egildo Vieira which I learned a long time ago, around 2002-2003, in a workshop for bamboo flutes. I started my own workshop and worked with flutes during a period of four years until I left Brazil in 2007. The flute that I play comes from that period, it is made of taquara (a finer type of bamboo) from a forest by the country house of my father near Curitiba. I got to

FOOD
GOOD KING COLESLAW
By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca In January, the good team of ‘24/7 Valencia’ have a little holiday, so to celebrate that fact, we are going to fastforward to that post-Christmas feeling. To paint the scene; your domain is now the sofa with the fire burning. You are slightly groggy and overcome by that mix of mince pies, roast turkey, Stilton, roast potatoes, sausage rolls and other delicious delicacies (or Spanish/ international equivalents!) that have been at your table over the past few days. The array of leftovers waving for your attention in the fridge is of little appeal and your stomach knows this can’t go on. Yet, fear not, as it is told an Angel once said, for help is at hand with our very own recipe ‘Good King Coleslaw’. Ready to liven up your taste buds, save that overladen digestive system from its sins, and give an antioxidant immunity boost, all in one! The major star of the show of this recipe is cabbage. Sales of sauerkraut rocketed during the bird flu epidemic, the fermented cabbage having been proved to cure against the disease, proving the anti-bacterial properties of this vegetable. A vegetable that is also low in purines and alkalizing (which, if you are feeling the effects of a boozy Christmas, will help lower uric acid in the body), low in sugar and high in vitamin C. Green cabbage is good, but red cabbage is the real anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory champion and the one we will be using in this recipe, which also incorporates cider vinegar, apples and zinc defender ginger, for extra immunity protection. RETROGUSTO COFFEEMATES
BLACK (AND VERY GOOD) COFFEE IN THE CITY
high-scoring coffees that require different recipes: “An Ethiopian coffee with natural processing and a very light roast is not the same as a Nicaraguan coffee with a processed roast for an espresso.
As if they were using alchemy, ‘Retrogusto Coffeemates’ takes making and drinking coffee very seriously. Scales, thermometers, timers, quality equipment and, of course, excellent coffee. In a space no more than three meters long, this small coffee shop is revolutionizing the city of Valencia.
“Each coffee requires different treatment, according to how it has been processed and roasted. Our job is to complete this process as well as possible and offer the best possible experience with that coffee. A few coffees work better with milk, others are preferable with a filter. We always recommend drinking them without sugar because we consider the different sensory nuances of a coffee can be experienced much better that way, whether it tastes fruity or citrusy, chocolatey or nutty.”
In Retrogusto Coffeemates, you can buy coffee beans and also savour a double espresso, filter coffee or a cappuccino. They only work with specialty coffees and roasters they trust and provide all the product traceability details: farm of origin, altitude, processing, date of roasting. No more than a month should pass from the date of roasting until the coffee is consumed because the priority here is the pursuit of taste, “and you can only get that if the coffee you’re working with is freshly roasted.” The owners Martina Requena and Paula Esquembre are very clear on that point: “We pursue the total taste in coffee: coffee is bitter, but also acidic and also sweet! Our goal is to achieve the best possible taste and we do everything in our power to get it.” You will not find any blends in Retrogusto Coffeemates, only pure 100% Arabica bean coffees. These are top quality,
Although they do have brown sugar for now, if someone still doesn’t dare to drink their coffee without sugar: “Our taste buds have grown very used to some flat flavours with coffee, very bitter and burnt tasting, so we need to add sugar in this case. But when you drink these coffees, you gradually realize that the coffee doesn’t really need it.” San Francisco, London, Berlin, Melbourne…We are now in the third wave of coffee, where the traceability of the product is taken seriously, the baristas take care of the final processes and the main priority is respect for the bean. That third wave has been in place in the world for several years now but only taken root in Spain more recently, “although there are always exceptions
and people working very seriously on this for years here.” But it is true that it was only a relatively short time ago that roasters dedicated exclusively to specialty coffees were slowly introduced in Spain that can measure up to the major roasters like Intelligentsia Coffee, Square Mile, Five Elephant and Ona Coffee. “Right Side Coffee and Nomad Coffee, for example, are the regular roasters we work with, and also some others.” In short, Retrogusto Coffeemates is a space where you can enjoy a good coffee in the wonderful atmosphere inside the modernist building of the Mercado Central, considered one of the best markets in Europe dedicated to fresh products. Who wants a coffee?

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH P
PARE PERE
Due to the traffic and madness of Black Friday, we (D, P and myself) were half an hour late for our 21:30h table and were frantically banding WhatsApp messages to and fro with Concha, the owner of ‘Pare Pere’ in the heart of the upmarket Cánovas district. We finally met her and her partner, Simon, outside the taberna. We offered our profuse apologies (very graciously accepted) and were shown to our window table. Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia

to start, as this is how Concha and Pare Pere began. She supplied her croquettes to the original Pare Pere in Denia, and when that closed down she decided to name her new restaurant in Valencia after the 16th century, Denia-born saint. We had a selection of chicken & ham and sea urchin croquettes (four croquettes, 8€). They were excellent, the ham was delicious and the sea urchin, a first for me, was great, too.
the menu, were proof of that. So fresh… little deep-fried tastes of the sea! Really, a very interesting and different flavour (3€ each).
Merche’s Pisto turnovers (empanadillas) followed the croquettes. Tuna, peppers, tomato and onion-filled small parcels, crisp to bite with a soft warm centre (four turnovers, 10€).
Our final course was “Figatelles”, little Valencian-style mini-burgers – tasty and porky and served in steamed buns and two mustards (two for 7€).
Next came Cornbread turnovers (Cocas de dacsa) with home-cured tuna and anchovy on a bed of fresh tomato – typical of Denia apparently, and really fresh and good to eat (5€ each). The ethos of Pare Pere is that all food is served fresh and in season, never frozen, and is locally sourced from reliable suppliers on a short distribution channel. The Sea anemones in tempura (Ortigas de mar en tempura), new on
The next dish to arrive at table was a tempura of vegetables and, as artichokes are just in season, we had Artichoke tempura (Alcachofas en tempura) – a huge and delicious plate of them (9€).
We finished our meal by trying two of the homemade-on-the-premises desserts, a Coca de cerveza – a beer cake with a thick topping of beer-flavoured marscapone, and a Banana caramel cheesecake with whipped cream topping (cakes, 5.50€). Both went down a treat! Concha and Simon joined us at the end of the meal to chat about Pare Pere and also their recent acquisition of Finnegan’s, the Irish pub in Plaza de la Reina. They have great plans for it and
intend to improve the existing menu. They both raved about Concha’s fish and chips, made with the freshest cod. They love people to come by for a meal or just a drink at Pare Pere. The fish there looked wonderful and they serve a huge variety of freshly caught fish and seafood, including the famous Denia prawn. If it’s a lovely day, sit and watch the world go by on their ample terrace. TAPAS BARS
KAÑA MAKAN ONCE UPON A TIME IN SYRIA...
On C/ Sueca, the aroma oozing from Kaña Makan is so warm and thick; you could spread it on toast. This is all the advertising it needs: with such a smorgasbord of choice in Ruzafa, why not let your nose decide where to eat? The toasty spices grabbed me by the nose and hauled me off the street. Once inside, you’ll find a clean, bright bar with a young and relaxed atmosphere. Upbeat rhythms play underneath the buzz of conversation. Near the open kitchen, the warm orange wall is livened up by a mural framing a clock the size of a hula-hoop, and delicate hanging lamps cast shards of multicoloured light onto the tables. Around the back walls there’s space for exhibitions – on this occasion, acrylic paintings of iconic rock covers by Elena Pérez Ayrault. The pieces form an installation for the MUV Festival – and a clue about owner’s Azam’s other love. Founder/owner/chef Azam Kirco is driven by two passions: hospitality and music. Like many of us, he came to Valencia as a short stay – in his case, to do a Masters in Law – and liked the city so much he stayed. Azam did qualify for the bar but now he’s behind the bar instead prepping and serving his unique fusion tapas. Kaña Makan Ruzafa is the sister bar of Kaña Makan Cedro across town, which Azam established in 2010. In 2013, he opened this, the sister bar. The name? It’s a Spanish-Arabic pun: Arabic fairy tales begin with ‘kan yama kan’, similar to ‘once upon a time’ and so, with caña meaning ‘beer’ in Spanish and makan meaning
‘place’ in Arabic, it’s both whimsical and clever. If you’re Spanish-Arabic bilingual, claro. Eating and drinking at Kaña Makan is simple, with simple hours (open every day 19.00h – 24.00h), a simple drinks selection (but lots of different té aromáticos) and a simple ordering system. Our server María explained how it works: take a menu sheet and pen, tick what you fancy. María collects the sheets; Azam compiles the orders. It’s supereasy for non-Spanish speakers – there’s no asking or pointing, just read the simple descriptions and tick. Filling in the form is like bingo crossed with voting at a particularly busy election. The choice is between 14 different montaditos y tapitas – these words have no direct translation in English: they mean nibbles of stuff. Stuff on slices of baguette; stuff wrapped in a soft tortilla; stuff to dip bread into. And also an intriguing special, montadito del chef, plus pan, salads and sandwiches. I could happily live on Middle Eastern food alone so several of the items were familiar: falafel, humus, baba ganug and kufta all rang a bell. But sujuk, sfiha and kube? Not a Scooby. I explained my ignorance and Azam whizzed over the special montadito for us to try the unique flavour of carne picada de ternera. The beef mince arrived in a puddle of hummus and olive oil, with triangles of flatbread for dipping. I couldn’t identify the unique flavours in the meat – aromatic and sweet like keema lamb in Indian cuisine. Azam told me the spice mix is Armenian and confessed he didn’t know exactly what it consists of. Ha! It’s the ultimate secret recipe. The other montaditos arrived. Bits and

bobs on bread. Or wrapped in bread. The gamba was just that, a singular prawn perched between two discs of cheese, on top of a slice of baguette. But it was a damn fine juicy, garlicky prawn. This is a cheap way to both fill up and to try different tastes: each montadito costs just one euro. If you’re eating light, the flatbread and hummus is all you’d need. As we unpinned the falafel and kufta wraps, we contemplated how to pin down what we were eating. It’s certainly informal finger food, Spanish-style. But with Middle Eastern flavours. To understand Kaña Makan, you need to understand Azam. He grew up in Syria so the flavours of his homeland are the DNA of his food. Thrown in his Armenian and Lebanese heritage, stir in Spanish culture and here you have it: Kaña Makan’s fusion tapas. This is not a restaurant with starchy tablecloths, fine glassware and solemn candles. This is not a place you bring your grandmother on her birthday. This is a place for friends who want to share an afterwork, eat with fingers, explore some exotic tastes. The food is to share but it seems more important to share conversation. The interior is set up to foreground this – benches, perches and small tables, to cluster around and talk. Azam will supply the food, but you’ll have to bring you own plans, ideas and stories. And every good story starts with once upon a time... VALENCIA FOOTBALL
FRUSTRATION MOUNTS AT MESTALLA The expectancy and anticipation Valencia fans had at the beginning of the season has quickly diminished and been replaced with mounting frustration as their team continues to underperform on a regular basis. After a convincing result but unconvincing effort against local rivals Levante at the end of October, Los Chés returned to the Champions League and a crucial clash with the Belgian side Ghent. The 20,000 Ghelamco Arena was sold out well in advance of the game and the capacity crowd created an electric atmosphere as the teams entered the field of play. The home crowd’s enthusiasm rubbed off on the ‘Buffalos’ and they dominated the game throughout. The solitary goal came shortly into the second half when Sven Kums converted a penalty after Barragán had handled the ball. The visitors offered very little in return, barely creating a chance, and the plucky Belgian side saw the game out relatively untroubled to jump back into contention for qualification from the group stages of the world’s most prestigious club tournament. The following weekend Valencia travelled to Galicia and a match up with high-flying Celta Vigo. No football
connoisseur could have predicted what happened next as Valencia ran out 5-1 winners at the Estadio de Balaídos and showed the watching world exactly what they are capable of. A brace apiece from Paco Alcácer and the much maligned skipper, Dani Parejo, and another goal for defender Shkodran Mustafi put smiles back on the Valencia faithful as they headed back from the north of Spain wondering if they could repeat this effort against lowly Las Palmas at Mestalla the following weekend. Quite simply, the answer was no. A bright start saw Valencia take the lead early on through Paco Alcácer but after that, it was all downhill for the home side. Las Palmas poked and probed and finally got the reward their fine play deserved when former Valencia player Jonathan Viera finished off a slick move for his current team with a little more than half an hour to go. As the game reached its climax, it looked increasingly likely that the Islanders would take all three points and it was only a string of fantastic saves from Jaume that gave Los Chés a share of the spoils. At the end of the game a chorus of disapproving voices rang out from all sides of the ground and clusters of supporters once again were demanding the sacking of the manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
The Portuguese coach has increasingly come under fire for his regular tinkering with the team that now normally sees numerous changes to the starting lineup, game after game. Striker Álvaro Negredo, a fan favourite, publicly criticised the coach’s tactics and since that time has been frozen out of first team action. Nuno claimed it was only for football reasons that the Spanish international had not been picked to play, but more recently, the ‘Beast of Vallecas’ has been struck down by acute appendicitis that required surgery, rendering him unavailable for selection anyway. Another favourite of the ‘Curva Nord’, Rodrigo de Paul, has also not been able to get a look in, with Nuno instead favouring Santi Mina to partner Alcácer up front in the games that Valencia have played two forwards. On top of that Nuno has also been blighted with long-term injuries to key players like Barragán, Piatti and Rodrigo Moreno. After the Las Palmas match, he received further bad news that his talisman defender Mustafi is unlikely to see any further action this calendar year. The divide between Nuno and the fans seems to be getting deeper and deeper and it will take all his management skill and ability to claw the supporters back on side. The team he picked for the next game, the long trek to Russia and a confrontation with group leaders
twentyfoursevenvalencia 37
Article by John Howden Zenit St. Petersburg, was once again contentious. Rafa Mir, a product of the Valencia Academy that has produced current first teamers Paco Alcácer and José Luis Gayà made his full debut. The teenager stepped in for Santi Mina who was dropped to the bench. Alongside Mina in the dugout was Rodrigo de Paul, fuelling speculation that any issue between him and the manager were now resolved. A youthful looking Valencia side started well but, without Mustafi shepherding proceedings at the back for the Spaniards, the defence looked fragile and Shatov had soon sprung the offside trap to put the hosts ahead inside 15 minutes. Valencia had several good chances but failed to make them count, and their wastefulness in front of goal was punished when Dzubya played a neat one-two with Hulk and then finished with aplomb to collect his fifth goal of the group stage. The visitors’ evening was compounded with the dismissal of Rúben Vezo 10 minutes from time, putting him out of the final match against Olympique Lyon.
cauldron of a stadium, it was important to keep a calm head from the start. Unfortunately, this did not happen and Los Chés had three of their back four in the referee’s notebook by the 20th minute. The inevitable happened in the 35th minute when João Cancelo was given a second yellow for an arm in the face of Vitolo. On the back foot from that point, Valencia put in a truly insipid performance and failed to achieve a corner, let alone a shot on goal. The home side’s domination was rewarded early in the second half when left back Escudero volleyed home from a tight angle after a sublime pass with the outside of his foot by the former Valencia star Éver Banega. Just before the end, Javi Fuego also got his marching orders, to leave Valencia struggling to put out an established back four for their next home game against Barcelona. A discussion the same day of the game between the owner Peter Lim and Nuno led to the resignation of the Portuguese coach after the match. The search now begins for another new manager, who will be Valencia’s sixth since Unai Emery left in June 2012.
The news all associated with the club were dreading came later that evening. Ghent had scored a winner in the fifth minute of injury time against the French outfit, and as a result, qualification for the knockout stages now lay outside Valencia’s own control.
The other La Liga team in the city, Levante, are also not doing well at the moment. A home draw with Deportivo La Coruña and a1-0 defeat also at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium against Real Betis were sandwiched between a fantastic 3-0 victory in Gijón.
The trip back from Russia would have been a gloomy one for the players and fans and the thought of playing in another hostile environment the following Sunday would have done little to ignite enthusiasm.
Despite that remarkable result, other teams at the foot of the table have also been picking up points, ensuring that Levante continue to remain in a dogfight at the foot of the table as 2015 nears to a close.
A match-up with Sevilla is always a brutal affair. It is fair to say both teams do not like each other. With the pantomime villain Unai Emery in charge at Los Rojiblancos, things often get feisty.
John Howden

VALENCIA CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR
12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
VALENCIA STYLE Many expats will be heading home for Christmas. The call of the family party, the industrially boiled vegetables, the soporific splendour of Christmas TV and too much port is far too strong. “The atmosphere is not the same here, they just don’t know how to do Christmas in Valencia”, they’ll tell you. But things are changing round here and Valencia is no longer the big yuletide yawn it once was. If you are thinking of staying around, there’s plenty of festive fun to be had without having to worry about the weather playing havoc with that budget airline’s flight schedule. To get the bauble rolling, why not visit the Rockefeller Center style open-air ice skating rink in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento? It’s open from December 4th to January 10th. skate around to Christmas tunes wearing wooly hats and mittens under the municipal Christmas tree, even if it is 20 degrees in the shade. Combine this with your Christmas shopping trip and a couple of early beers (or perhaps even a glass of egg nog) and you should start to feel the spirit. There will be other similar rinks at the Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias, Nuevo Centro and Bonaire. Tickets cost 7 euros but you can get a discount if you present receipts to show you’ve been shopping in the shops in the area. There are also plenty of Christmas markets dotted around the city, most of them opening the first weekend of December. The pick of the bunch, of course, is the magnificent Mercado Central (recently selected by the BBC as one of the Top 10 most beautiful markets in Europe). The old Mercado is always spruced up and is worth a look just for the decorations. There’s always a great atmosphere of even more hustle and bustle at this time of year and some
delicious seasonal food to be had. This year there will be more than 300 extra stalls spilling out into Avenida del Oeste (aka Barón de Cárcer) and the Plaza del Mercado. At the Mercado de Colón, the stalls specialize in figures and background settings for your Nativity scene and if you are lucky you may catch a Christmas brass band concert while you are browsing for your model of a Roman-era Palestinian sawmill. There is a ‘medieval’ craft market in the Plaza de la Reina, which tends to be a bit more than the hippy earrings, canvas lampshades and silver pork pie hats that we see all year round, and there will be markets at Nuevo Centro and the Ciudad de las Ciencias which includes the 'Street Food' trucks thing they’ve done a few times before. As far as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day go, it’s kind of the opposite to what happens in the UK. Christmas Eve will be quiet with most restaurants closed in the evening and Sunday service public transport; while on Christmas day most

people go out to a restaurant (it’s hard to get a table if you don’t book) and then to the cinema, theatre or the circus. Some people like going to the Midnight Mass at the cathedral on the 24th or to the Carol Concert at Iglesia de la Compañia (behind La Lonja). There’s also a big Christmas concert at the Palau de la Música on the 21st. If you are looking to run off some of that turrón between Christmas and New Year, on December 30th there’s the San Silvestre, the last race of the year. It’s 5K (a short hop for some) and starts in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento at 20.00h in the evening. Like many of these things it’s an everyman mixed bag of elite runners and Saturday joggers. Many runners do this one in fancy dress and some of them turn up with a bit too much of the Christmas spirit and take a short cut through the bars. For New Year’s Eve, people book weeks in advance for ticket-only parties organised in hundreds of pubs, discos and restaurants around the city. There’s
often a strict dress code and they can get quite expensive but it’s usually an all-in-one ticket including free drinks, dinner and, best of all, a free paper hat and party blower. If that’s not your thing, there’s a big free municipal do at the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Everyone brings their 12 grapes and crowds into the square to hear the clock chime midnight, then there’ll be fireworks (of course) followed by a light & sound show with DJs doing their stuff from the balcony of the town hall and a live band. There will also be a ‘Macrofiesta’ (which sounds like a party in a cash and carry) at the Principe Felipe Museum with all kinds of party-style stuff going on inside the museum and around the City of Science gardens. If you fancy something a bit more sedate, you can go for dinner (and grapes) prepared by Ricard Camarena under the modernist iron girders of the Mercado Colón. But Christmas doesn’t stop there in Valencia. In Spain the festive season goes on until Epiphany on January 6th,
which is the big day for kids as the Three
Kings bring them their presents. The 6th itself is a day to be with the family for
most Valencians but the city is abuzz with atmosphere on the evening of the 5th. Even more Christmas markets are open
around town late into the night (there’s a huge, particularly lively, one around
the Cabanyal market from January 2nd
to January 6th). Restaurants are full and buzzing, and bars offer the traditional
Roscón de Reyes. The three kings arrive
on a boat at the port and make their way to the town square in a cavalcade, which
starts in the Alameda and ends with the kings being lifted on a fire engine’s aerial
platform up to the balcony of the town hall.
If it’s Christmas atmosphere you are
looking for, Valencia’s got more to offer
than you might think. Or perhaps you just prefer to stay indoors and sleep
through the whole thing. Whatever you decide to do, have a great Christmas! David Rhead and José Marín Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia

VALENCIA WORLD
MANUEL PASTOR FRUTOS SECOS DEL CARMEN Tell us something about your background and experiences… My name is Manuel Pastor. I am 50 years old and I’m the owner of a familyrun, independent local shop in the Barrio del Carmen called ‘Frutos Secos del Carmen’, which is a dried fruit shop in the old town. My childhood and adolescence occurred in the streets of the historic centre, where I grew up. I helped my parents in the shop from when I was very young. Can you tell us about the history of the shop? My parents opened the dried fruit shop in 1975. At that time the Barrio del Carmen was a humble, working-class barrio with plenty of small businesses like ours. During the 1980s, the barrio started to get degraded and I remember drugs being dealt, an increasing amount of thefts and a lost generation of youth. After that, there began an era of squatting… Despite all this, the barrio has been renewed and improved itself greatly and it is now an excellent place to live. There is no noise problem and the local bars and restaurants are all licensed and respect the hours. The centre is well connected and you can reach it easily from different parts of Valencia. If they finish the T2 Metro line one day with the proposed stop in the very heart of the old centre… then it will truly be a great barrio. Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia
What is a typical day in the shop? A typical day in the shop is getting the tienda ready for the opening hour of 09.00h for clients and suppliers. If it’s a busy día, the day flies by and you close at 14.00h and then re-open from 17.00h to 20.30h. It’s an enjoyable job in that you get to meet so many people and different types of clients. What is the Valencia character? The Valencian character is clearly influenced by the local climate and geography. We are an open, tolerant and optimistic people. We like to enjoy life with our friends and family. We have wonderful light and beautiful women. What more do we need? How do you see Valencia as a place to live? Valencia is just the right size to be a great city rather than a sprawling, urban monstrosity. The climate is mild and communications are good. Along with its character, this makes it an ideal place to live.
fight the free radicals associated with the ageing process. They are a source of energy and form a traditional part of the Mediterranean diet. At Frutos Secos del Carmen, we have a variety of almonds like Marcona of the highest quality with raw, roasted and toasted choices. We have excellent macadamia nuts with both fried and raw choices, as well as Spanish nogal nuts (walnuts) and pacana (pecans). You can also find Turkish and ‘Giant U.S.A.’ pistachios. We have organic ‘Rey Solomon’ dates, ‘Málaga Moscatel 7 Coronas’ raisins, which is the best raisin grape in the world. You can enjoy superb orejones (strips) of dried peaches, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds and more. We have the best selection of products combined with homemade choices, too. We have been serving our clients for 40 years. Interview by Owl Frutos Secos del Carmen C/ Alta, 20 Tel: 696 945 745
Have we seen the end of the crisis in Valencia?
Zona Carmen
The end of the crisis will come when people start to think of the common good of others. While we only think about accumulating material possessions we will never be happy. We have to change our way of thinking and acting.
