One of the great things about Valencia is that it can feel like spring has come early… a long time before winter is truly over. The outdoor life has always been part of this region’s charm. In recent times, the ‘Lindy Hop’ movement has really taken off here. LONG LIVE CABANYAL! You know when you hear about someone who bought a place for peanuts in some unfortunate area of London or New York, then the area became hip and their modest bolthole became a smart investment? That’s what seems to be happening in Cabanyal. It’s February already – the days of 2016 are slipping by and with every passing day, my New Year’s resolution of investing in Cabanyal is slipping through my fingers. At 24/7 Valencia, we thought it was time to have another look at this area that is off-radar for many Valencians and the majority of tourists. Firstly, a whip through the area’s history and secondly, a few food-and-drink-related reasons to step back from the seafront into the historic barrio of El Cabanyal... Ramshackle slum or historic heritage site?

The village of Cabanyal was originally (and still is, depending on who you ask) separate from Valencia city. In the 13th century, it became home to fishermen and merchants and was known as Poble Nou de la Mar (‘New Village of the Sea’). The area acquired the name El

Cabanyal in the 15th century and today the name is often used as an umbrella term for three barrios: El Canyamelar, El Cabanyal and Cap de França. The name Cabanyal comes from the unusual cabana-style housing, most of which have been replaced by straight-onto-thestreet terraced rows and a few modern apartment blocks. The tall barraque homes make full use of the daylight and sea breezes. From the 19th century onwards, their exteriors have been clad with distinctive patterned tiles: maritime blues and whites; psychedelic Op art; scenes from history. Anything goes. It seems no two houses are decorated the same, every home as unique as the area itself. Progress or poison?

If you walk around Cabanyal today, you’ll see another more sinister decoration: brown stripes smeared across buildings from pavement to roof. These indicate where the council bought and ripped down buildings. After its seafaring heyday, Cabanyal went into decline. What to do? Plans brewed for 10 years until 1998 when the Valencia City Council kicked off their plan to ‘regenerate’ Cabanyal. This implies an economic boost and careful restoration. Not so – it involved bulldozing 450+

homes so Av. Blasco Ibáñez could thrust out to the coast. This bizarre idea echoes the equally short-sighted folly of the Valencian government that pulled down the original city walls in 1865 as a ‘job creation project’. Thankfully, years of ardent campaigning succeeded – Mayor Rita Barberá was voted out in 2015 and the aggressive strategy of ‘run down, buy and demolish’ has now not just been postponed but cancelled. Now, no thanks to the council, some streets look tumbledown but Cabanyal isn’t a slum or a ghetto – locals fear a swing towards ‘gentrification’ but they’re in no immediate danger of Starbucks moving in. The area can now rest easy, safe from demolition and with its heritage status secured. Business as usual

Historically, Cabanyal was always selfcontained enough that residents didn’t need to venture inside the city walls, and many residents would tell you that’s still true. As well as independent stores and services, Cabanyal has a superb indoor market. The hall buzzes with banter, locals stuff their wheelie bags with fruit and veg, and toasty aromas from bakery stalls fight with the salty pong from the fishmongers.

Besides the usual shops, the seafront is served by the semi-chaotic Thursday street market. Move into Cabanyal and the noisy, colourful melee brings everything you could need literally to your doorstep. (Like any busy street event, you’re advised to take extra care of your valuables.) Going out in Cabanyal

Of course, you might not want to invest in property in Cabanyal – but you can support the area by visiting and spending a few euros. Many valencianos and international residents don’t go out in Cabanyal – asking around, this seems to be due to the area’s poor reputation. The beach might entice more visitors but they weren’t venturing down the side streets into what they perceived as the ghetto. But now better bars and restaurants are opening, it’s worth hopping on the metro for a gin tonique, stroll along the Paseo Maritim, and then something to eat. You may even find yourself so charmed by Cabanyal that you end up buying your own bolthole – just like British travel writer Jane Lovatt, who’s now a Cabanyal home-owner and part-time resident. Here are her top picks for food and drink in her barrio:

RED VALENTINE BEETROOT SOUP By Helen Westwater La Ola Fresca

This month’s recipe combines the earthy red of beetroot and the pure white of coconut milk with a heady mix of spices, to steer off any last winter colds and cheer the hearts of any lost Valentinos. Beetroot, happily a vegetable that is available all year in Valencia, is well known for its liver-cleansing qualities and its ability to increase blood flow to the brain. However, it may also aid blood flow to other parts, as ancient Romans believed eating beetroot produced amorous feelings and it has since been used as an aphrodisiac.

BEETROOT AND COCONUT SOUP

Ingredients • 350 gm (2-3) large fresh beetroots cooked, peeled and chopped in cubes • 2 shallots • 1 stick lemon grass • 1 inch fresh ginger • 1 dessertspoon cumin spice • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 can (14 fl oz / 140 ml) coconut milk • 450 ml vegetable stock • Juice of 1 lime • Seasoning to taste • Cumin seeds and more oil + sprigs of coriander leaves for decoration

LOS TOMACCOS - LA OLA FRESCA SATURDAY 6TH FEBRUARY,12:00H SESSION VERMUT

So as we head to Valentine’s Day and also the Chinese New Year of the Red Fire Monkey, we present our ‘Red Valentine Beetroot Soup’. First prepare the spices by finely blending the lemon grass and peeled fresh ginger. You can easily find these ingredients in the Chinese shops around the main train station. Heat the oil gently and add the blended spices (except the cumin). Cook gently for a few minutes and then add the finely chopped shallots. Leave the shallots to soften for a few minutes. Next, add the cooked beetroot and a dessertspoon of ground cumin and stir. Then add the tin of coconut milk. When it has come to the boil add the vegetable stock. Leave to cook for about 30 minutes, being careful that it does not overboil. Blend all the ingredients so that the soup is smooth. Mix in the juice of one lime (to taste) and season with salt and pepper. When ready to serve, heat a little oil in a frying pan and add cumin seeds. Decorate individual bowls with the oil and cumin and a few sprigs of coriander. CIAO BELLA D and I have been on a low-carb diet following a two-week visit to the folks back home in England for Christmas and gigantic meals throughout the stay there. Every new house meant another lunch or dinner, or even brunch, sometimes all three in the same day. This, of course, led to expanding waistlines and ultimately – the diet. We’ve been doing really well until our visit to this month’s restaurant of the month, the very lovely ‘Ciao Bella’, a relatively new Italian on the edge of the Barrio del Carmen. It’s a lovely room – you reach it through a long narrow bar with the kitchen to the left – into a large airy space. There were quite a few diners already eating at the white linen and red polka dot tables when we arrived for our 22.00h reservation, including a large group of ladies who seemed to be having a great time. We took our places at our table and were welcomed by Luca, the very amiable co-owner from Rome, who asked us if we minded if he chose our meal for us. “We pride ourselves in having what we believe is the best Italian restaurant in Valencia, the best ingredients and the most authentic pizza!” Whilst we waited for the food to arrive, Luca served us a good Ribera del Duero, Valdimójenes Tempranillo 2014, very drinkable and great price/quality. We elected to share each dish and our first one was Caponata (6€, or 8€

large) a kind of ratatouille made with olives, tomato, celery and aubergine and served with homemade focaccia for dipping. Lots of it and delicious. This was followed by Antipasti Siciliana (8€). Three separate items – balls of ragoutstuffed rice, breadcrumbed and deepfried, potato and basil croquettes and ‘chips’ made from chickpea flour. They were all good, but for D and I, the rice balls were the stars of this antipasti. Luca chose two main courses for us to share. Linguine con frutti di mare (14€), the freshest of ingredients and full of langoustine, king prawn, prawns, mussels and clams in a light tomato sauce. We loved it! Our main course was pizza (8-10€), they reckon they have the ‘Magi of the pizza’ working with them at Ciao Bella, and judged from the perspective of this one, they are right. A light, thin and crisp wholemeal flour base covered with tomato sauce, green olives, mushrooms and a rich chorizo, liberally covered in big parmesan shavings. There was so much food that we really didn’t think we were going to be able to finish it all, but it was so good, we just had to!

SALSA VERDE – A SUPPER CLUB VOYAGE In December 2015, Salsa Verde sailed into Valencia. It might be easier to explain what it is by explaining what it isn't. Salsa Verde isn't a restaurant, bar or cafe. It's a workshop, show-kitchen and supper club. And sometimes a school and a laboratory. At 24/7, we were intrigued to hear about the opening of Valencia's first (that we know of) venture of this kind so I went to their opening night to find out more. As well as offering cookery workshops and corporate events, the key ingredient of Salsa Verde is the supper club, described in their words as club gastronómico privado. In case you're not familiar with the concept, here's how it works: pro chefs or amateurs run a regular or one-off dinner service in an apartment or pop-up space. Diners sign up to go and pay the suggested donation (legally, supper clubs can't charge). It's popular in larger towns and cities in the UK and it's been so popular in France that restaurateurs in Paris Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia

grumble about them. That might sound charmingly clandestine but, in reality, they can be a recipe for food bores and food poisoning. No so aboard Salsa Verde. The large apartment in Ruzafa has been specially adapted to host 10 guests at the kitchen island – a huge bench table and cooking range. IKEA would envy the kitchen’s use of space and the myriad glass spice jars. Off to the side is a prep kitchen and guest toilet (no, you won’t be able to rummage in anyone’s private chambers, in the style of “Come Dine with Me”). The charismatic captain is professional chef and bespectacled pirate lookalike Oliver Sharpe who, despite his Britsounding name, is Chilean (his father is Scottish). Oliver has worked alongside a constellation of Michelin-starred chefs but his cooking and manner are not at all intimidating. As I watched him nonchalantly blowtorching a hunk of tuna steak, I realised the way he cooks is with a schoolboy glee rather than chef-y pretention. And Oliver clearly loves to share his passion for food – he needs no encouragement to pass on tips and tricks. For example: How to get the seeds out of a pomegranate?

Half it, turn it upside down, bash it. The best way to fry mushrooms? In a very hot pan, in small batches, otherwise the temperature of the pan drops. Fun things to do with a blowtorch? Pass me the tuna. I’m always nervous about ‘tasting’ menus because, as a non-red meat eater, I often end up admiring the aesthetics of a dish rather than actually eating it. So I was delighted to discover that the majority of Salsa Verde’s cooking is pescatarian. And anyone unconvinced by vegetarianism could be converted by Oliver’s hummus de calabaza – this pumpkin hummus hung around throughout the meal and I couldn’t leave it alone. Not only are non-meat eaters catered for perfectly, but the bread Oliver makes is gluten-free, too. The menu itself looks long but it’s cleverly designed to be spread out over the evening and manageable for all appetites. On arrival, we shared picas (nibbles) such as the divine hummus with veggie crisps and flatbread. Over four hours, that was followed by two aperitivos, cold and hot entrantes, a main dish and then a pud and coffee or tea. Each stylish plate set in front of us

looked like it had slipped from the pages of “Elle Food & Drink”, the kind of dish that looks so attractive you don’t want to attack it with a fork… but then… well, it’s unavoidable, isn’t’ it? The highlights of the evening (aside from the hummus which I’m desperate to have the recipe for) were the Tataki de atún (tuna tataki) and the Raviolone de scamorza y espinaca (cheese and spinach ravioli). The tuna, seared by blowtorch and then sliced tataki-style (similar to sashimi), was so astonishingly fresh and clean tasting, I think I actually felt myself getting healthier. The ravioli was a highlight because of the way it was prepared: while everyone took a break between courses, Oliver demonstrated his method for making ravioli and several of the guests took over to finish the batch. Beautiful healthy food, kitchen theatre and education, all in one. It’s pretty much my ideal evening. But all this virtue is offset by the accompanying wines. Given Oliver’s heritage, we drank Chilean wines from the De Martino winery along with a white and red from Clos de la Vall, the Valencian producer. Keen to remember the evening in fine detail,

I didn’t indulge but by midnight some other guests were three sheets to the wind and just getting started on whiskey. At Salsa Verde anything goes – drink and be merry, or if you don’t want to join in the bacchanalian revelry or need to slink home before the small hours, then that’s fine, too.

At the helm behind the scenes is Dorothee, Oliver's wife and, at 8½ months pregnant when I met her, the most glowing advert for Oliver's cooking. The pair moved to Valencia after steering Salsa Verde to success in Barcelona. Naming their business after the Basque sauce, verde also neatly encapsulates the pair’s cuisine, interest and credentials. Between them, Oliver and Dorothee (who's German) speak five languages (Castilian, German, English, French, Valencian) and the night I attended contained people from at least five nations, all of whom were warmly welcomed in their own language and included in all conversation. What is your view of the political stalemate in Spain?

By the time this interview is published the situation may well have changed significantly, so it’s not easy to say. At the time of writing (late January), the possibility of forming a lasting coalition government looks unlikely, although I suspect that something temporary may be cobbled together at the last minute to save face. This feels like a transitionary phase in many ways. My hope was that the December elections would usher in a new generation of politicians and help sweep away the old guard – of both persuasions. That only happened partially, and so now we are in an almost Italian-style tangle, with everyone jostling for position, their eyes focused on winning votes at future elections. In this kind of environment, political groupings can disappear overnight if they play their hand wrong (look at UPyD and what has almost happened to IU), so everyone seems to be concerned far more about their own survival than the greater interests of the country. Perhaps a more important question is how things might develop politically if there is a renewed economic slump, as some are predicting. My fear is that extremist views would become increasingly popular. Does this tie in with your latest novel, ‘A Body in Barcelona’?

Spain is currently facing multiple existential crises, not least of which is the Catalan situation. This is the backdrop to ‘A Body in Barcelona’. Catalonia appears to be edging ever closer to some kind of break with Madrid. I no longer see it as a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’. Given that, I wanted to explore how certain sectors of Spanish society might behave in such a scenario, what the reaction to Catalan independence moves might be within, for example, the military. north of Valencia, but the story quickly expands to other parts of the country, with episodes in Ceuta and ultimately in Barcelona, and an explosive finale inside the Sagrada Familia. Could you tell us about your latest e-book, ‘Spanish Ways: Exploration of an Enchanted Land’?

It’s a collection of essays, articles and short stories about or set in Spain. Most have appeared before in various newspapers and magazines, but I wanted to put them together, as much as anything else out of curiosity. I’ve been writing about Spain in one form or another for almost 20 years, so I wanted to see if my views about the country had changed in any way. What I noticed was that although my interests widened and deepened over time – exploring, for example, the Spanish Civil War, the legacy of the Moors, the finer points of paella-making or traditional folklore and legend – the essence of my initial attraction to Spain remained constant, like some bright star. Spain has a subtle, resonant poetic power that speaks to something within me yet which can perhaps never be clearly delineated or defined. Every aspect of the country that I have explored feels like a small patch or section of something much greater, like tiny squares in a mosaic. If you put them together it may be possible to intuit

something of the ‘whole’ of which they are mere ‘parts’. Is

publishing and can the printed book survive?

Yes, the printed book can and will survive. I know more and more people who are ditching their e-book readers and going back to proper books. Personally I’ve stuck with the printed word all along, despite having published a couple of e-books now. This is not an article of faith or a ‘position’ I’m taking, simply an observation that screens are ubiquitous today, filling our world and minds with fairly low-quality noise. Books provide oases where we can find some degree of silence; they have the ability to produce a space within us where we can begin to hear our own inner, quieter voices – the ones that tend to get drowned out in all the hullabaloo. Which is probably why novels, particularly, are tending to get longer these days. Paradoxically, I find the more I turn screens off, the more aware I am of what’s really going on in the world. As a catchphrase, you might express the idea as: “Switch off and tune in.” Interview by Owl

NEVILLE BROTHERS – “A CHANGE IS GONNA COME” Well, Nuno Espírito Santo did not even make it to December before being out of a job. After a mediocre start to the season, his departure came as no surprise. What did stun most people was the speedy appointment of Gary Neville as the new man in charge! With no previous managerial experience, he was called upon by owner Peter Lim to re-unite with brother Phil to try and revitalise Valencia’s season. He watched on from the sidelines when Valencia claimed a spirited draw at home to the always impressive FC Barcelona. Then came his first test, a match in the Champions League with the fast- improving Olympique Lyonnais of France. ‘Los Chés’ had to win and hope that Ghent failed to beat Zenit St. Petersburg in Belgium in order to advance to the knockout stages. It was a tough baptism of fire for Neville as Lyon came out worthy 2-0 winners, leaving Valencia to settle for a place in the last 32 of the Europa League. The following weekend it was league duties and a difficult confrontation with the Basque side Eibar. Sitting on the fringe of a European place it was important to get back to winning ways,

but Valencia had to rely on a late goal from André Gomes to take a share of the spoils from the Ipurua Municipal Stadium.

Jémez, were next up and they, too, took points from Mestalla, heading back to the suburbs of Madrid after sharing four goals with the hosts.

Getafe came next at Mestalla and both teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Valencia twice coming from behind to secure a point. The local derby at El Madrigal with Villarreal was the last game prior to the winter break and a workmanlike performance from the blanquinegres went unrewarded as Valencia went down to a solitary goal from Bruno.

Another long journey loomed for Valencia with a trip to Galicia for a contest with Deportivo La Coruña. The Galicians were already celebrating three points when Negredo silenced the home fans with a 93rd minute equaliser.

The New Year started in difficult fashion with the ‘galácticos’ of Real Madrid gracing Mestalla. Once again, Valencia matched one of the best sides in the world with passion and commitment to earn a credible 2-2 draw. It could have been so much better for the home fans if Negredo had buried a glorious chance with virtually the last kick of the game. Unfortunately for Valencia, Keylor Navas got the better of the one-on-one exchange to ensure the game ended in a stalemate. Hopes were high of a repeat performance against Real Sociedad but the second trip to the Basque region inside a month proved to be a frustrating one as Jonathas bagged two late goals for the hosts in a 2-0 victory for the San Sebastian-based club. Just after the restart Danilo gave away a clumsy penalty, which Sanabria easily converted to put the visitors a goal to the good. The home side huffed and puffed to claim an equaliser but two glorious chances for Negredo went begging and luck sided with Gijón when Moreno headed first against a post and then again inches wide when in a good position.

DOG REFUGE IN VALENCIA No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich. - Louis Sabin With its numerous parks, open spaces and, of course, the ‘garden’ of the Turia riverbed meandering through the centre, Valencia is a great place to own a dog. I love nearly all animals… not insects, fish, and reptile-type creatures… and I especially love dogs. Not having one here in Valencia, an incredibly dogfriendly city, has been a thorn in my side since I arrived. I’d love to adopt a furry companion but with my circumstances always slightly up in the air, I’ve despairingly concluded that now is not the right time to own a dog. Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia

So having made that decision but still wanting to spend time around dogs, I decided to do a bit of research into animal shelters in Valencia, with the hope of finding a place in the centre or close by to volunteer my services. My search led me to S.V.P.A.P (Sociedad Valenciana Protectora de Animales y Plantas), an animal refuge on the outskirts of Valencia. Motivation in place, I immediately sent them a Facebook message, which they responded to the next day telling me to come along and help out that weekend. Great news! Volunteers are welcome there to walk the dogs, or to help with cleaning the cages on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 9.00h – 14.00h. I don’t drive but it was easy to get there, being only a 20-minute bus ride towards

Llíria on the 145 bus from outside Nuevo Centro. I was a bit lost at first, but I followed the sounds of loud, excited barking and found the refuge on an old industrial estate. The first thing I noticed was a big ‘S.O.S.’ spray painted on the wall, and my feeling of excitement faded away as the reality of the situation sunk in. Those barks weren’t excited greetings, they were from desperate animals, just like most of the dogs I was about to meet, dogs that were only there because they’d been abandoned or mistreated. I spent a few hours there taking the dogs for short walks; 15-20 minutes a dog, I was instructed, “and no feeding them!” I guiltily pushed the barritas de carne to the bottom of my bag. I had been excited at the prospect of playing with dogs and

getting slobbered on, but as I walked the dogs they were far more interested in sniffing at everything and navigating their way through the rough terrain surrounding the sanctuary to pay me any heed, let alone put up with me constantly trying to stop and stroke them. I got the point, and instead just followed their lead (no pun intended). They just wanted to stretch their legs and feel free! When I got home later that day, I couldn’t stop thinking about the refuge and I wanted to know more about the place, the people that were working so hard there and, of course, the dogs. Here are some of the facts:

Moro came over to the cage bars wagging his tail in response to hearing Bea. “He’s a street dog, who always lived streets, we’re sure. He slept under cars, on patios, and he was brought into us injured after a car accident. The thing is, he’s older now, and he needs a home and stability. On top of that, medical attention, as he has an illness. And here he is, the poor thing, he’ll surely die here.”

Adoptions are generally seasonal; the number obviously drops dramatically during the summer. We often find young dogs, and when checking their backgrounds, we see they’re abandoned because they’ve grown too quickly or too big and the people no longer want them. People don’t want dogs that are sick. People don’t want dogs that are old. Those are the dogs that most often need a loving home.

We need everything here, whatever people can donate we happily accept. We always say that if you have something you won’t miss, send it our way; think before you throw things in the bin!
