24/7 Valencia dedicates this April edition to the late, great Johan Cruyff who lived in Valencia in 1981. He personified the ‘total football’ that has been so successful in his adopted country of Spain and he fought for the humble Levante UD in the autumn of his playing career. Due to his influence on football, it is said that he is the only player to have ‘won’ the World Cup whilst still losing the final in 1974! Check out an exclusive article on Cruyff and Levante UD as well as a homage to Johan Cruyff in Valencia in pictures… Food lovers are in for a treat as we visit the newish ‘Viva Tapas Bar’ tucked away in the centro historic and the even newer ‘Colmado de Lalola’ by the cathedral. Helen Westwater of La Ola Fresca has a ‘Cannellini Bean Purée’ recipe just for our readers. In Valencia Music, we have an exclusive interview with rock’n’roll star Mark Tait of 5th and Pontiac. Art lovers should
enjoy our feature article on San Nicolas Church of Valencia and their renovated paintings that are now on the view to the public. In this stressful 21st century rat race, some of us are looking for other paths. Check out our exclusive interview with Jackie regarding ‘MIndfulness in Valencia’. See our April agenda at the back for live music and clubbing nights. In the April listings, you will find lots of information arts, theatre, chill out, live music, restaurants, trade pubs, shopping and more… Cruyff said that Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ was one of his favourite songs and it summed up his approach to life. It is also said that Valencians are renowned in Spain for doing things “their way”. See you next month! 24/7 Valencia Team

SAN NICOLÁS
SAN NICOLÁS BAROQUE TREASURES IN THE HEART OF THE CARMEN
Hidden at the end of a little passageway marked “Parroquia de San Nicolás”, about halfway down C/ Caballeros amongst the tourist trap bars and ‘authentic’ bodegas, is one of the city’s greatest art treasures. The dazzling Baroque frescoes at the Church of San Nicolás have recently been restored to their former glory and are now open to the public. This was the Borgias’ local church, their Valencia residence was just down the street, and Lucrezia and family had many strong connections with the place. The original church was built in 1238, one of 12 churches in the city built on the site of Muslim mosques, under the orders of the conquering King Jaume I to
show who was now in charge after he’d retaken the city from the Moors. The church was in a prime location. A palace in C/ Caballeros was a must for any self-respecting medieval Valencian noble family. It followed the old Roman Decumanus Maximus road from east to west across the ancient Roman city. Like in the present day Barrio del Carmen, it was the only wide, straight avenue amongst the surrounding winding maze of streets of the Moorish city. The Borgia family had two houses along the street,
which are still standing at number 36 and number 33. This is where the ‘femme fatale’ of the Borgia family Lucrezia lived. They also had a little place off C/ Navellos, which is big and grand enough to now house the Valencia parliament. Alfonso de Borgia, the first Borgia pope (Callixtus III), was baptised here by Valencia’s patron saint Vicente Ferrer. After the ceremony, San Vicente, never one to shy away from finding favour with Valencia’s aristocratic families, made the ‘miraculous prediction’ (or perhaps
twentyfoursevenvalencia 9
BAROQUE TREASURES IN THE HEART OF THE CARMEN
one of the heaviest hints in history) that, “This boy will be Pope and he’ll make me a saint”. He obviously knew a thing or two as Alfonso eventually became Pope and fast-tracked fellow Valencian Vicente to sainthood in 1455, just a few decades after his death. Before he went to Rome, Alfonso became rector at San Nicolás and rebuilt the church in Gothic style. San Nicolás Church benefitted greatly from its connection with the family. Rodrigo Borgia (later Pope Alexander VI) was a protector and patron of the church as were his infamous children Lucrezia and Cesare, who made frequent lavish donations to the parish throughout their turbulent lives. The frescoes now on show date back to the 1690s, when it was decided that the old Gothic church would be refurbished in the new, fashionable Baroque style. In response to the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church seemed in danger of being seen to be out of touch. The Church decided it needed to get closer to its audience and hit upon baroque art, with its exciting motion and theatrical tension and its clear & easily interpreted detail as the ideal way of putting its message across to Joe Public. The style quickly spread from Italy across Europe and the decoration of the church of San Nicolás is one of the finest examples in Spain. It’s not to everyone’s taste, if you like the cold & simple stone of a Gothic church, you are in for a shock. Part of the attraction of baroque was that it impressed the power of the church on normal folk by making churches look like the lavish palaces of the aristocracy. It’s brash, dramatic, shiny and over-the-top. The frescoes were designed by Antonio Palomino, Carlos II’s court painter (who also did the inside of the dome of the Basílica in the Plaza de la Virgén), and carried out by the Valencian baroque painter Dionís Vidal. Once you’ve paid your two euros entrance fee (you can also pay extra for
a guided tour) and shown your ticket to a small army of staff who seem to queue up to inspect your ticket at every turn, a breathtaking blaze of colour and expertly crafted, detailed images jump out at you from all angles. The frescoes almost completely cover the walls and high ceiling vaults (they must have had very long paint brushes in those days). The pictures are extremely figurative and dramatic interpretations of Biblical stories, allegories, architectural drawings and scenes from the life and miracles of San Nicolás. This was Saint Nick’s early period, before the red suit and the reindeer, but he can be clearly seen in his fulsome bushy beard, not unlike a modern day hipster craft beer
pub barman, performing his saintly good deeds. There are also portraits of the artists and, of course, Alfonso Borgia himself. We are told in the blurb that San Nicolás is one of the finest examples of baroque art merging perfectly with the previous Gothic style, one not overpowering the other, but for some tastes (including ours) it can seem a bit overdone and slightly disorientating. Nevertheless, you can’t deny the sheer beauty, drama and amazing detail (and the historical importance) of the frescoes. And all this on your doorstep just a hop and skip away from the kebab shops and stag parties along the old C/ Caballeros. MARK TAIT OF 5TH AND PONTIAC Tell us something about background and experiences.
room. My neighbours and landlords were a mother and daughter originally from Cypriot Greece...they only seemed to complain when it went silent. I lived there on and off for 14 years...poor souls! your
I spent my formative years on the island of South Uist. It is located off the west coast of Scotland, way up north. Everybody seemed to sing or play an instrument. It might have been because there was only one television station and I may be wrong but I think it was BBC2... not even BBC1! Anyway, the island itself seemed to sing.... the wind was relentless so I just joined in while staring at the Atlantic in the knowledge that the next stop was Canada. We lived in the old schoolhouse that had a hall attached and they used to host céilidhs, which are parties where the people provide the musical entertainment. Music and singing seemed like a lot of fun to me and along with my Mum’s Beatles collection, I think I got hooked back then. Later we moved back to the mainland and I ended up in Glasgow playing and singing in bands. Everyone seemed to be on the dole or were apparently being educated somewhere. We had time on our hands and music passed it well. I learned to play drums, bass, guitar and a bit of piano and my flat was one big rehearsal
We released some records and toured the University circuit quite a bit and then the rave thing happened which meant ‘P45s’ (unemployment) for most gigging bands back then. We adapted our style and did a kinda dub/dance crossover, which kept us working but the band didn’t want to do the London thing so it all fell apart eventually. I headed there myself, it was good and then it wasn’t. The Libertines had got things going again and my band Zobi were getting noticed but for some reason we never got over the finishing line. London can be grim when money is tight so I headed back to Glasgow and did nothing for a while. Eventually I put together a one-man show called ‘5th and Pontiac’, released the ‘Terms and Conditions Apply’ album, which got really good reviews and did quite well. I came to Valencia to do a show and decided to not go back. That was eight years ago. I was introduced to the band around six years ago and we started to rehearse and gig under the moniker Skallywag. We were introduced to producer Raúl Nacher who helped kick us into shape. We recorded the album over three sessions within a year and it was decided to take the name 5th and
Pontiac and call the record ‘Skallywag.’ The gigs got bigger and better and we played the Low Festival in 2014 but, for one reason or another, things imploded and us three original members had to put a new line-up together. It has never sounded better and we have the songs in the bag for the next record, which we will get done before the end of this year while gigging and trying to sort out a new management deal. That’s where we are at right now. What are your musical influences?
The Clash were my band. They were the first band I identified with and who made me believe that I could give it a shot, too, even although I was really young. I did my first proper gig aged 12 and that was it...no turning back! I grew up with the Beatles who I think are still the benchmark when it comes to crafting a good song. Bob Dylan influenced my lyrical outlook. Joe Strummer and Springsteen confirmed it. I have been lucky to enjoy and appreciate so many bands and scenes over the years, each one as important as the other and far too many to mention here. From techno to bluegrass, I can love it all and still love listening and seeking out new music because there are still wonderful, talented and creative people making it. Plan B has got what it takes in spades, to mention but one. How does living as a musician in Spain compare to living as a musician in Scotland?
twentyfoursevenvalencia 11
MARK TAIT OF 5TH AND PONTIAC
I have felt really appreciated here in Spain and I have met some amazing people through just being a musician, but I have to be honest and say it was the same in Scotland or Berlin or wherever I have been lucky enough to be. Music, it’s a great thing to be involved in, although the reality remains the same for most musicians the world over I think...feast or famine! Could you take us through each track of your latest album, ‘Skallywag’?
I have to be honest here and say that I find describing the meaning of songs quite difficult and that might be the reason I write songs and not books, poems or some other creative sport, but here goes....
‘Skallywag’. The video is not too shoddy either. Welcome to the Ball
A movie clip type song that I like to write. Sometimes based on my life and sometimes not. All That I Wanted
A true love song. I can’t tell you about who as they haven’t worked it out yet. He-he-he! Nice mellow tune in my opinion. Turning Me Around Sometimes people come into your life and make a helluva difference. That’s this one. Skallywag
Roughly influenced by Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” and what happens when fate throws people together. Whistlestops
Another movie scene ditty...open to translation. Mexico Way
Lyrically it refers to the cold, shallow reality of thug life and was based on a couple I know, but don’t tell them!! Musically, it’s a cracking wee rock tune and was the first single released from
A dark tune about suicide played with a bright, acoustic melody. Keep On Keeping On!
Well...what else can one do? Castles in the Sky
We did a gig in Ademuz, our drummer’s family hometown....a reflection on the night and what you leave behind to keep on moving through life. Any plans for the future?
This year we plan to record and release the new album, play more shows and return to the U.K and hopefully Germany also. You can follow the band on our FREE app ‘5th and Pontiac’ (available for iPhone and Android), which contains dates, music, videos, photos and contact details for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Both ‘Terms and Conditions Apply’ and ‘Skallywag’ are available to buy from iTunes, etc., on Dogmountain Records.
Again, a love song with some er...sexual innuendo. A nice ballad, though.
I will also be embarking on a series of solo shows playing some of my favourite songs. Just me, my guitar and a loop pedal. You can check that out on my MARK Facebook page. Really looking forward to getting out and playing everything from Dolly Parton to the Ramones!
Oh No Lordy
Interview by Owl
The first song I wrote with the band. Hope-fuelled. New country, fresh start.

TAPAS BAR OF THE MONTH
VIVA TAPAS BAR On a sultry spring night, a couple of the 24/7 Valencia team strolled down the side streets of the historic centre for an evening of fine dining at the eyecatching ‘Viva Tapas Bar’, which opened its doors to the public last December. It is an interesting concept; the philosophy is to combine quality traditional Spanish ingredients with a fresh, artistic and cutting edge presentation. The dignified, 19th century listed building is very spacious and set on two floors with three rooms; we opted for the more intimate lounge room upstairs, which also serves as a private sala for businesses for dining and presentations. Downstairs you will find a long barroom with high chairs and high tables for couples as you enter. This leads onto a much larger, more formal room at the back. This is quality dining in an
understated way, which overall reflects the rather discreet and cultured crowd it seems to be attracting… Their charming Spanish chef, José Luis García-Mascaraque, has 28 years of experience in making your visit memorable and has worked in both the Restaurante Goya of the Ritz Hotel of Madrid and Harrods of London. Coowner Reyes Real was our kindly and helpful host of this special tapas bar. She tells us that the ratio is 60% Spanish to 40% foreign clients. Without exception, we found all of the staff welcoming and most informed about ingredients of the cuisine and the choice of wines to an extent you do not always encounter in Valencia. This is a place run by connoisseurs…
We opted for a menu degustación at 26€ (drink not included) to get a real feel of the cuisine on offer. This consisted of six different dishes, each presented on eyecatching plates or distinctive bowls that had a touch of the vintage about them. Indeed, the design of the interior of Viva Tapas Bar is a touch rustic and peaceful yet somehow quietly modern, too. To accompany our meal, we opted for a delightful ‘Mar de So’ 2011, a Valencian red wine for 15€, which was quite intense with plenty of body and it lasted us the whole evening. Their wine cellar has a good selection of 60 red, white, rosé and sweet wines from different regions of Spain to complement your meal. Prices for a bottle begin from 10€… We started proceedings with a beautifully presented ‘Higado de pato en micuit con espuma de cerveza Turia’, which was a top quality, semi-cooked duck liver paté accompanied by a handful of popcorn and lightly covered in a tasty local craft beer. It made for a pleasant introduction
twentyfoursevenvalencia 13
VIVA TAPAS BAR
to the night’s dining. By the way, their three types of tasty home-made artisan breads (2.75€) are prepared on the premises using the finest flours… Next up was ‘Ensaladilla marinera con mojama de segura y coco de lino’ which was a very, very fresh Russian salad with top quality salted tuna combined with a linseed coconut giving it a distinctive tang. We enjoyed the crunchy wafers, too! We then moved onto ‘Gambas frescas al ajillo con su pan de gambas’, which were magnificent stripped headless prawns in a pleasant garlic sauce. Probably the most artistic presentation was the next dish, ‘Bravas con berberechos’, three crunchy skinned potatoes accompanied by cockles delivered on a rectangular little tray each with a different sauce, including a light curry, a pistachio sauce and a spicy red salsa. The bravas had a light, fluffy feel and the sauces were subtle so as not to distract from the main ingredients.
Our final course was a ‘Secreto de Ibérico con copos de su corteza y cremoso de manteca colorá’. This was filling bowl, combining quality rinds of pork with delicious Spanish ham as a topping and a red lard sauce typical of Andalusia.
distinctive interior and truly excellent
By this point we were quite sated but for the sake of our readers we enjoyed a dessert of ‘Piña crujiente al brandy con chocolate’ which was a very fresh crunchy pineapple (freshness being a trademark of the chef) in brandy with a chocolate sauce. It was beautifully presented in an indigo-coloured bowl and a refreshing end to a visually enjoyable and filling course of tapas from around Spain. Incidentally, the courses change every week so be prepared to be pleasantly surprised…

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
COLMADO LALOLA It has been quite a dramatic end of the month for D and me. We went to London for the Easter weekend to a family wedding. The fares were so steep direct from Valencia that we decided to drive to Alicante (less than half the fare, even taking into account petrol and parking). All good – until we were ‘bumped’ on the way home on Wednesday, as the flight was overbooked, and the following day there was to be an air traffic control strike! The upshot of all this was that the next available flight back to Spain was not until Saturday. After a bit of hassle, I negotiated a hotel room for the duration at the airline’s expense. We have therefore been staying at a four-star hotel at London Gatwick full board (all meals were buffet style) and returned to Valencia yesterday at 02:00h. I am telling you all this to explain why the very last thing we wanted the next day was
another meal in a restaurant which we had booked for Sunday for this review. Thank goodness it was Colmado LaLola, a great new tapas and wine bar by the management of Restaurant LaLola just around the corner. Let’s take a look at the venue first, it’s a smallish space up a couple of steps at the foot of El Miguelete, the bell tower of Valencia’s beautiful cathedral. A tall bar and stools are down the left hand side backed by shelves bearing the wines and products they sell (more on this later). To your right is a long, Manisesstyle ceramic tiled bench with little round tables and low stools along it, and more in the space between. There’s a chiller cabinet full of cheeses and smoked fish and a small bar leading off to an open kitchen. To the left of the chiller is a table with two hams on stands, ready for cutting, and behind all that, against a lovely, graphics-covered red wall showing today’s specials is another chiller… this one covered in ice and fresh seafood and fish.
We were given a warm welcome by the George Clooney-lookalike waiter who immediately poured us a glass of ‘Las Ocho (8) Bobal’, a D.O. Pago Chozas Carrascal wine from UtielRequena. The number 8 refers to the eight grape varieties (Bobal, Monastrell, Garnacha, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot) blended to make this wine. It’s a very nice, fruity wine. This was rapidly followed by some expertly cut (we watched) jamón ham. Whilst we ate the wonderful ham, ‘George’ prepared a couple of Valencian oysters for us – they also serve Galician oysters (both varieties, 2.90€ each ) – while his colleague prepared a plate of cigalitas (langoustines or crayfish) in the galley kitchen served with fried ajo tierno (young garlic) (10€). The oysters were fresh as fresh as were the langoustines, which were sweet and delicious. Jesús, LaLola’s owner, arrived at this point and took me on a mini-tour of Colmado. “Everything you eat in here you can buy to take away”, he said –
twentyfoursevenvalencia 15
COLMADO LALOLA the shelves are lined with bottled and canned vegetables and seafood. There are jams and conserves, and, of course, the wines: “Where possible, we source from the Comunidad de Valencia, or as close as we can. The wines are priced on the shelves to take away. If you drink them here, we charge a flat five euros corkage”. There are beers too, including LaLola’s own label brew. The mini-tour ends at a black & white photo above the bar: “This is my mum and grandma in their ultramarinos shop near Avenida del Puerto. So you see, food runs in the family!” He left us to eat and promised to return to chat more at the end of our meal and then turned to the bar to make the best-looking sangria I’ve seen outside my own house. Two individual glasses for two ladies at a table of Greek guests, made with great flair and a lot of alcohol. We’ll be having one of those next time we go! Next up was a ‘Tabla de ahumados’ – smoked fish –, a long wooden board with three montaditos of cristal bread (a montadito is a piece of toast or bread with something on top, cristal is bread that has been dried out in a low oven till it is crisp). The three toppings were, smoked herring with tomato creme, smoked salmon with butter and ‘caviar’, and smoked sardine with queso fresco and orange marmalade (the queso fresco was a delicious goat’s cheese from nearby Vall d’Uxó). All three were quite delicious, D reckoned she could spend her days eating the smoked sardine with cheese and marmalade! This tabla is great value at 12€. Once we’d polished off the montaditos it was on to the Tabla de quesos (cheese board): a Tronchón from Teruel (famous for skiing in the mountains north of Valencia), a hard blue cheese from Vall d’Uxó again (just north of the city and known for its caves), and a manchego from La Mancha, three piles of little wedges all served with sweet conserves(12.50€).
To finish, we had a chocolate buñuelo and leche frita (a buñuelo is a bit like as doughnut ball, and leche frita is a cake made with flour dough cooked in milk, cooled, cut into pieces, dipped in flour and egg and fried, 2.50€ and 2€) served with a lovely Pedro Ximénez dessert wine. A great finish to a lovely meal.
wine list, too. Colmado LaLola is a great
Jesús’ mum should be very proud of her son, he has a very successful restaurant just around the corner and a great team working with him. FOOD
CANNELLINI BEAN PURÉE By Helen Westwater
On Saturday 16 April, the barrio of Benimaclet will host a fresh food market and an eco-organic tapas tour. Revving up to the event, and recently back from Italy where I was lucky to take part in an olive oil tasting under the guidance of olive oil expert Johnny Madge, we dive into the slippery world of olive oil to find out what really is in those bottles labelled as Extra Virgin. As it is widely known, olive oil has a host of health-giving benefits including being anti-carcinogenic, improving intestinal health and its ability to lower cholesterol, which is lucky if it is your job to taste olive oil all day! It also proves why we should perhaps look a little more closely at the difference between organic and non-organic virgin oil. Olives should be picked fresh from the tree and the extraction process started within 12 hours. However, usually mass-produced oils are not able to achieve this and so the base is a fermented sea of olives, leaves and twigs, which is then all doused in gallons of water, washing away many of the health benefits. In addition to the environmental damage, the result is a rancid or fusty oil, which will need some altering to return it to its required taste and colour. Although these oils regularly fail inspection standards, the big brands have a huge lobby power and so far have resisted any attempts to regulate what is written on the label to help people to understand what they are actually buying. My experience of olive oil tasting involved first how to warm the olive oil in Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia
blue glass, by turning it in our hands. We then took small sips of the oil, smacking it with our lips and duck-like sounds to the back of our throats, which gave quite a burn…this and the bitterness being key signals that the oil is good! What surprised me most was that it didn’t leave a greasy feel in the mouth but felt more of a fiery sensation, much akin to swigging a shot of whisky! In the olive oils we tasted, you could definitely taste the personality of the olives used, similar to how we are accustomed to recognizing different grapes in wine. Oils that mark the harvest dates and are cold-pressed are likely to be of higher quality. Fortunately, in Spain, we are in no bad place to find a good honest olive oil. 55 Spanish oils won awards in the New York International Olive Oil Competition. For more information, a great reference book is ‘An Olive Oil Lover’s Guide to Organic Oils of Spain’ by Dorian Yates (you can also go to http://www. oliveoiltimes.com and http://www. johnnymadge.com/) So is it worth investing a few more of our pennies for an organic product? Certainly for this recipe, a simple but heavenly purée of cannellini beans, sage leaves and olive oil. In a large frying pan, warm the olive oil and gently fry the squashed garlic and sage leaves until fragrant. Add the cooked white beans to the pan and stir until they are warmed through and coated with olive oil. Transfer the beans into a bowl with a ladleful of the cooking liquid, crush the beans with a masher or if you like blend in a processor, then return to the frying pan. Stir, adding a little more bean cooking water if necessary. Taste and adjust the seasoning accordingly. Spread the beans on crusty toasted bread. Splash a little extra oil and a sage leaf on top to decorate. And on Saturday, 16 April come to Benimaclet to enjoy a fresh food market in the plaza and eco-tapas tour in nearby bars. See www.benimacletentra.org + www.

GARY NEVILLE

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST The experiment of ‘rookie’ Gary Neville as the Valencia manager came to a crashing halt at the end of March, when owner Peter Lim sacked the Englishman with immediate effect after a string of bad results. The transition from media pundit to entrenador was a calculated risk for both Lim and Neville and with only three wins in 14 league games (and no clean sheets in any of them), it was obvious that what seemed a good idea in theory was not working in practice. Unfortunately, not since the golden years of Rafa Benítez in the top job at Valencia has there been any kind of managerial stability. Rafa departed in 2004 and, with Pako Ayestarán’s interim appointment until the end of the 2016 season, there have now been 15 managers take charge of the team on a temporary or permanent basis since Valencia last won La Liga.
This lack of sustainability has seen the club not win a domestic or European trophy since 2008, when they beat Getafe in the Copa del Rey final at Vicente Calderón. The man in charge that day was Ronald Koeman, who is now successfully overseeing Southampton. His stay was tainted by the way he ostracized Albelda, Cañizares and Angulo from the club but other Premiership leaders Quique Sánchez Flores and Claudio Ranieri have also been at the helm since Rafa’s reign as well.
Sevilla to back-to-back Europa League
Sánchez Flores is currently looking forward to a FA Cup semi-final with Watford and Ranieri will have the freedom of Leicester if he can see his team hang on for Premier League title glory. Valencia’s next opponents are Sevilla, who have Unai Emery in charge. The Basque was also in charge of Valencia for four years and did an admirable job despite the financial restrictions.

A string of poor performances at the start of this season’s campaign put pay to that. Super agent Jorge Mendes’ friendship with Peter Lim also led to a string of poor acquisitions in the summer (all on the books of Mendes) and no suitable replacement for Otamendi has been found. Mendes had a similar nucleus of players in the past at Zaragoza and Deportivo La Coruña and both ended up getting relegated as a result. The current freefall that Valencia find themselves in and their tough end to the season campaign could lead to a lot of fingernail-biting on the terraces over the next month or so. Gary Neville, in one of his last interviews, stated that Valencia were missing a leader like Albelda or Ayala and the constant change of the captain’s armband this year seems to echo that sentiment. The losses to Levante, Celta Vigo and Las Palmas have quite simply been a result of the other team being more hungry for victory as much as anything. The midday derby defeat to local rivals Levante was embarrassing and unacceptable and Pako’s first game in charge at Las Palmas seemed to suggest the commitment and desire still remained second best to that of the opposition. Valencia lost 2-1 away with an own goal by Mustafi being the decider.
MUSTAFI VS LAS PALMAS
With four of the last seven games against Sevilla and Villarreal at Mestalla
and away fixtures at Camp Nou and Bernabeu, it is essential that Los Chés
regroup and find the determination, grit and confidence to get at least some points from these games.
Levante UD have an even more daunting
task to stay in the premier flight next season. Rooted at the bottom of the
table, they have eight games left to
save their season. Gijón, Espanyol and Bilbao at home look like winnable
games but their final home game against championship contenders Atlético Madrid looks a tough ask.
Three away trips to Andalusia to play Betis, Málaga and Granada could yield
some points. If they do, then Levante’s fate could all boil down to the final match in Vallecas against Rayo Vallecano.
With both teams well and truly in
dogfights, it is going to be a nervy end to the season for both sets of supporters. John Howden

JOHAN CRUYFF AND LEVANTE UD
JOHAN CRUYFF AND LEVANTE UD In the wake of the recent passing away of Johan Cruyff, one of the greatest football players of all time and thrice (1971, 1973, 1974) Ballon d’Or winner, many tend to forget that, besides his glorious contributions to Ajax Amsterdam and FC Barcelona and to the Netherlands national team, he left his mark in the humble city of Valencia…possibly in the most humble team of the Spanish League, Levante UD. His debut at the stadium of Sabadell in March 1981 is not forgotten by football aficionados of the Valencia Region. Many may ask how Johan Cruyff, after leaving the budding NASL soccer league in the United States and before returning to Ajax, chose Levante, albeit for a short spell of 10 games during the 1980-1981 season. He scored two goals bur failed to help the team’s return to first division during that season. In brief, Cruyff’s stay at Levante UD is a sign of a team which remains an icon in the Spanish football panorama, despite being in the shadow of their great local rivals, Valencia CF. Levante UD was founded ten years earlier (in 1909) than the Blanquinegres and draw a steady Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia
flow of unconditional local supporters, yet it remains hidden from the eyes of most foreigners visiting or even living in Valencia.
the Europa League, playing against the likes of Hannover, Olympiakos, Twente, Helsingborg and Rubin Kazan along the way.
Levante UD has always been the ‘neighbourhood team’ of the areas close to the Valencia port and the beach. Its appeal is easily felt if one simply takes a stroll down the neighbourhoods of Poblats Marítims (Cabanyal and Malvarrosa), where more often than not, Levante’s blaugrana (blue and red) colours tend to dominate the bars, the social clubs and the terraces. Though a few years ago, the legendary Casinet, one of the social clubs that was a flagship of the granota neighbourhood closed its doors, the levantinistas breathe and live together with their club which, despite currently running its longest-ever stretch in the First Division, at the top flight for the sixth year running, is forever in the limbo between first and second division. Their supporters wear their modesty with pride: “We are the poor, the ugly and the humble, but we never falter”, sums up Pep, the owner of ‘El Puerto’ cafeteria.
The current Levante stadium, where the team moved from the original grounds by the beach area of La Malvarrosa after its stadium was destroyed during the Civil War, holds less than 25,000 supporters. However, it’s hard to see more than the 10-15,000 regulars during most games, and it is due to tourists and fair-weather Real Madrid, Atlético or Barcelona fans that they fill the stadium for the biggest handful of games for the season, besides the obligatory local derby against Valencia CF. On the other hand, the fans honour the team’s 107year history by religiously supporting their team, come rain or shine, and while they always hope for the best…they are forever prepared for the worst.
It’s not easy to be a ‘granota’ or ‘levantinista’, agrees Ramón, the newsstand man par excellence of the port area, who has been a Levante fan as long as he can remember. The fact is that since Levante returned to first division play in 2010 with the lowest budget that the Liga has ever seen. They have the lowest spending totals on new player signings during those six years, and a minimal income from TV rights compared even to their local rivals. Good management coupled with some lucrative sales (in particular of the Ecuadorian Felipe Caicedo and Keylor Navas from Costa Rica) have kept the Levante boat afloat for longer than anyone can remember. Despite the constant threat of descent into the second division at the beginning of every league season, they have been hanging on since 2010. In the 2012/2013 season, the team achieved the greatest feat in its history by reaching the quarter-finals of
Levante, as this article is going to press, is at the bottom of the league. However, there is still hope: within four points of salvation, Levante is the “best of the last” teams among the major European leagues and it will not be before the 95th minute of the last league game before fans lose hope. As any aficionado of Valencian football, we hope that the great Johan’s memory, who tried to lift the team up 35 years ago, sends the current granota players the winning message from above: play well first and you will win next. Valencia would miss Levante UD from the first division, but rest assured, just like the fishermen and the humble neighbours of the Poblats Marítims, this team will be the last to lose patience, faith and hope in a better and brighter future. It is a history that has been in the writing for 107 years, and remembering the greatest moments during this time gives greater support even in the hardest of times. It is a history that has been more often characterized by the word ‘struggle’ than that of ‘victory’, but sometimes unflinching faith in a constant struggle is the greatest victory of all.

MINDFULNESS IN VALENCIA How does living and working in Spain compare to England?
It’s so different, especially for me, as I’ve gone from working for the third-largest organization in the world to working for myself in a foreign language. One of many many, many challenges. The security of working for the NHS in the UK, and all that comes with that cannot compare with the insecurity of trying to make a living in a country still in economic crisis. However, the low cost of living here gives me the opportunity to do what I love and am passionate about. I’m not so sure whether it would be possible to do what I do in London and be able to pay my rent. The other big change is from working 9-5 to more indeterminate hours, allowing me the luxury of working on my computer in the Botanic Gardens enjoying the sunshine, for example. The quality of life here is so much higher for working and living and that is precious. What is mindfulness?
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally”, a complete definition from the godfather of western Mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn. Mindfulness originates from Buddhism, and since the 1970s has been offered as a secular practice in the format of an eight-week course.

After a year, I decided I’d had enough of cooking and moved with my half-French, half-Valencian partner to Alzira.
I was lucky enough to be offered yoga

Mindfulness practices are a series of formal and informal practices, including meditation, that help us to become more present and to achieve certain attitudes such as; acceptance, letting go, non-striving, patience and so on. Mindfulness is a way of getting to know our interior world in a kind, nonjudgmental fashion and thus it can be said it is a way of returning to ourselves, inhabiting ourselves and our lives more fully. It’s also an established, evidencebased practice for depression, stress, anxiety, and a host of other ailments and common problems. Personally, it brings me calm, tranquillity and a sense of inner

MINDFULNESS FOR STRESS IN ENGLISH
Are we evolving spiritually in Europe or are we going backwards?
10.00h – 12.30h
Great question. As a late-flowering practicing Buddhist and born into a Jewish family, I would say probably a bit of both. Before I found mindfulness and then Buddhism, the extent of any spiritual connection began and ended with nature. The consumerist and capitalist model, which dominates Western society and economy, has little in common with spirituality, and puts the individual first and community and spirituality last. However, the way mindfulness and yoga, amongst other practices, have swept through the Western world is testament to a society hungry for something more than the latest car or computer, as we realize these things bring fleeting pleasure and not true and lasting contentment. Our diet of quick, easily obtained highs and constant striving for more is exhausting. A desire for a quieter happiness, a connection with something other, and something we cannot explain is common, I think, for all human experience and people look for it in different places and in different ways. It seems that the more we go down the political and economic routes of capitalism and neo-liberalism, the more we see how and where they don’t work and the more there is a thirst for that something else, or that something other. Is this spiritual evolution? Hopefully…
4 May – 29 June Location: Espai Respira Vida, Nuevo Centro, C/ Beltrán Báguena, Valencia (Metro Turia) Price: 220€, includes manual and USBs with guided meditations A comprehensive programme destined to help manage stress, anxiety and other negative mental states. Effective and simple techniques based on meditation and self-management to live with less tension, more control, balancing your life and opening you to your true human potential. During the eight-week course we will learn how to pay attention to the present moment, focusing on one thing at a time. We will begin by developing awareness of ourselves: of our body and our feelings and thoughts. We will introduce the idea of confronting more difficult or unpleasant bodily sensations, feelings and thoughts. This self-awareness is developed via formal meditation practices and informal practices of mindfulness in daily life. As the course progresses, we will expand our awareness to learn to live our experiences from a wider perspective including awareness of our environment and of others. Kindness and self-compassion form an important and core theme of the course.
