BRITISH COUNCIL

CertTESOL FULL and PART-TIME COURSES The CertTESOL is a practical course in classroom methodology. It is recognised by the British Council as an initial qualication for teachers in its accredited organisations in the UK and in its own teaching centres overseas.

Why do the course? It’s a qualication which is internationally recognised, so it helps you get a job. The full-time course is a one-month intensive course in July, and this is great if you have no other commitments. However, some people may not be able to commit for a full month or may want to complete their training over a longer period of time. So the beauty of the part-time course is that it’s spread out over 6 months from January to June, so while on the intensive course there is input and teaching practice every day, the part-time one takes place on Friday mornings and Saturday afternoons.

Anna Wright is the Adult School Academic Co-ordinator at the British Council Valencia and has worked in EFL since 1992 in both the private and public sector. She lived and worked in the UK for 10 years, specialising in the teaching of EAP. Anna is also a teacher trainer on the Trinity CERT TESOL and Diploma. Her research interest is in learner training and the use of portfolios/ learning logs.

What is the best thing about the course? The CertTESOL is a practical course. Trainees teach lessons every week, and they teach lower and higher levels to get experience teaching both. Trainees evaluate their own lessons, what went well, what didn’t go according to plan and what you would change, before the tutor gives them feedback. This ongoing process of self-reection so you can identify good practice for yourself is I think the best thing about the CertTESOL.

Jonathan Paige started teaching English in Chile in 1995 during his year abroad at University, where he was studying French and Spanish. Since then, most of his working life has been at the British Council Spain. He has also taken part in summer schools in England, most recently teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at Leicester University. In 2012 he completed an MA in Educational technology and TESOL, after which he joined the Trinity Cert TESOL training team here in Valencia.

particular brought him great wealth.

Novelist, journalist, politician, war correspondent, founder of Utopian communes, publisher of books and newspapers, voluntary exile, tireless traveller, political prisoner, anti-cleric, duellist and womaniser, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez was born in Valencia in 1867. His novels have made him one of Valencia’s most celebrated literary sons but just like caravan-towing Valencia Football Club star Alvaro Negredo, he always considered himself to be a man of action rather than words.

Blasco Ibáñez is the most translated Spanish writer of all time after Cervantes and 17 of his books have been made into films. He wrote more than 20 novels, but his best known works internationally are “Blood and Sand” from 1908, later brought to the cinema in a Hollywood blockbuster starring Rudolf Valentino, and “The Four Horseman of

“Horsemen” spent twelve months at the top of the US bestsellers list in 1916 and 1917 and, to Blasco Ibáñez’s great

in the middle of the Great War. The

novel has had four separate screen adaptations, the most famous directed by Orson Welles.

In Spain, he is better known for his earlier period of regional novels, which

many critics claim to be vastly superior to his international best sellers. Titles

like “Cañas y Barro”, “La Barraca”,

“Entre Naranjos” and “Arroz y Tartana”,

which were all written between 1894

and 1902, reflected the harsh life of the rural lower classes in the Valencia

Region at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

the ruling classes and the closedminded

mud attitude of the Valencia peasants themselves.

The money he made from the regional books gave him the freedom to spend the next two years writing his three darkest, almost Kafkaesque, attacks on social injustice and the power of the church, “The Cathedral” (1903), “The Intruder” (1904) and “The Hoard” (1905). As the archetypal champagne socialist, the stark social criticism of the novels contrasted sharply with his playboy lifestyle, with a harem of lovers in his luxury homes on the beach at Malvarrosa and at Menton on the French Riviera (both of which have been made into museums dedicated to his life*). This was far and away his least commercial but probably most personal period, and you’d be hard pushed to find any copies of his books from this period in FNAC or El Corte Inglés (and most critics would say “quite rightly so”). But there was no putting the man down and he then followed it up with 11 consecutive international bestsellers, including “Blood and Sand”, “Four Horsemen” and “Mare Nostrum”. Throughout his life he was largely rejected by his literary peers and in particular by the renowned group of

intellectual writers of the time collectively known as ‘La Generación del 98’, who considered him too commercial. Not that he was too bothered, with his palatial homes in the south of France, New York and Valencia, and to some extent he openly enjoyed the ostracism. When asked why he was never accepted as part of the “Generación”, his laconic reply was, “Because people actually buy my books”. As a politician, Blasco Ibáñez was what you might call a utopian and what you’d almost certainly call a maverick. He founded his own Valencian political party, the Republican separatist Partido Federal, in 1891, only to be expelled by his own former supporters five years later. He then joined the Partido Republicano Federal and served as an MP from 1898 to 1907. After falling out for the umpteenth time with his colleagues, in 1909 he decided to create another party more in his own image, the Partido Republicano, known in the press as the “Blasquistas”. The party was based on three principles close to Blasco Ibáñez’s idealistic heart: “We are Valencian, utopian and staunchly anti-cleric”. He financed the party throughout with grand and somewhat eccentric gestures, such as the time he paid for a plane to drop leaflets all over Spanish territory carrying his speech entitled “Por España y Contra el Rey”. As you can imagine King Alfonso XIII wasn’t best pleased and called for his

arrest. This type of thing was nothing new to Blasco Ibáñez who throughout his life was arrested more than 30 times both for political reasons and, more often than not, as a result of his womanising. He was well acquainted with local judges and never imprisoned for too long. He was never slow to say his piece and actively sought political controversy, which along with an evergrowing queue of offended husbands meant that he was involved in more than 20 non-fatal, first blood duels (life was too much fun to risk actually being killed). Amazingly, the Blasquistas outlasted even the man himself until the party was finally disbanded after a disastrous result in the 1936 election with Spain on the verge of civil war. Blasco Ibáñez was fiercely Valencian but also a citizen of the world. He always kept his home on Malvarrosa Beach (where his dutiful, long-suffering wife waited for him) but he lived at different times in his life in Mexico, Argentina, France, New York, Rome and Florence, and travelled to Mongolia and China, always surrounded by the trappings of his millionaire lifestyle. In 1909, he went to Patagonia in the south of Argentina, where he set up two utopian communes called “Ciudad Cervantes” and “Nueva Valencia”. The societies were to be cooperative and selfsufficient and incorporated Valencian farming methods supervised by dozens of Valencia farmers Blasco Ibáñez had

brought along with him. The experiment was a financial disaster but the towns he founded still exist and he came back to Spain having lost a lot of money but happy. We’re not sure what happened to the Valencia farmers. In 1916, he worked as a war correspondent all over Europe reporting on the Great War for various international newspapers. It was a labour of love as he didn’t exactly need the money. In 1920, he spent a year on a lecture tour of the United States hosting conferences on ‘El Quijote’, for which he earned $1,000 dollars a time, a veritable fortune in those days, but then, you have to pay the rent somehow. Blasco Ibáñez died in Menton, France in 1928 having made many friends and enemies, made and lost a few fortunes, and having lived a full and eventful life. His body was brought back to Valencia in 1933. His grave was neglected during the dictatorship (Franco wasn’t really a fan of his work) but since 1976 he has been given full honours and has a big, brash, noisy avenue named after him. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH JOHN LYDON OF PiL John Lydon needs little introduction. He is one of the most important figures in

popular culture of the last 40 years. As Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, with his ready sneer & dyed hair, searing wit

and dangerous songs close to the bone, he was too much for the rigid British Establishment.

The

tabloids

labelled him the worst threat to British

youth since Adolf Hitler. These days,

he is regarded as “a national treasure.” How times change…

Back in 1977, taking a break from recording their legendary debut album ‘Never Mind the Bollocks…’ Rotten got slashed with a razor by pro-royalist

thugs outside a London pub. They

disapproved of his song “God Save the Queen”. It was to be first of a number of physical assaults on Rotten who

had become Public Enemy Number

One. Within a short space of time, the Sex Pistols were dropped and signed

by three record labels in succession.

By 1978, the Sex Pistols imploded on their American tour. Johnny Rotten

soon reverted to his real name and became John Lydon and formed the experimental Public Image Limited, aka ‘PiL’, in the same year. He and his band PiL play Valencia on 6 May! In an exclusive interview, 24/7 Valencia chatted for around 40 minutes over the phone with John Lydon in Los Angeles as he prepared for his European tour of 2016. Calling from a ‘locutorio’ in Valencia to L.A.… Hello John, can you hear me?

Hallo, yes, barely, you sound like you’re shouting in a field. I can baaaaaarely (sing-song tone) make you out. Someone’s shouting in the background, can you talk louder?

JOHN LYDON (JOHNNY ROTTEN) INTERVIEW self-doubt. It’s what killed Sid Vicious. He was my friend and I still miss him to this day. ‘The One’ is about me being an awkward 15 year old, going to social club dances and being shy about girls during the glitter rock era of the early ‘70s. I wasn’t shy about going to Glastonbury Festival as a young teenager, though, as I learnt to bunk the fare and ‘travel’ on British Rail! Can we go through your new Pil album, ‘What the World Needs Now…’?

(mock indignation): Oh Gawwwd, do we have to? ‘Double Trouble’ is about an argument with my missus about the plumbing! We ended up falling about laughing about it. ‘Know Now’ is based on a riff by Lu (PiL guitarist and multi-instrumentalist), it’s a simplistic song with as few words as possible and it is about confusion. ‘Bettie Page’ is about the ‘50s American pin-up legend. It’s a bass line that Scotty hooked onto. We were begging for a slow song, which is something we’ve never done before in PiL. ‘C’est La Vie’ is about people who lie and it is about being let down. It is not specifically about any one person. It is actually a positive song, there is no selfpity…there’s hope! ‘Spice of Choice’ is about the choices you make and being caught (laughs) if you’re married! Our bass player was in the Spice Girls and I have Spice Girls toy models that I enjoy to collect, so you’ll also find a sly reference to them in the song! I believe that in life, you should know what you are getting into before you make your choices. I’m pro-knowledge. Is that why you are still alive and some of your contemporaries are dead?

I know my tap water from my gin! Heroin is the worst drug going and it obliterates

‘Big Blue Sky’ is a homage to the American deserts of places like Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. It’s about the vastness and spacious of these places. The natives of America were exterminated. There’s an influence from the Doors album ‘Other Voices’ that was done without Jim Morrison.

‘Shoom’ is about my dad and his dry sense of humour, like the man sitting in the corner of the pub being ironic. I didn’t get his humour when I was younger and I used to take the bait every time. With age, I’ve come to appreciate it so much more, there’s a lot of truth in irony and saying the opposite of what you really mean. He passed away in 2008 and I really miss him, too… Where did you record the album?

We did it in the Cotswolds in England. It took about eight weeks. The local pubs were great but the local Tories didn’t take too kindly to us!

‘Whole Life Time’ is about me recovering from meningitis as a child. My memory was erased at the age of seven, I was in a coma for months and it took me four years to get back a sense of who I was. ‘I’m Not Satisfied’ isn’t the Muddy Waters song that the Rolling Stones covered, a band that you have complained just regurgitate the same song over and over. So, have you done the opposite with this song?

(laughs) Yes! It’s also a song about my meningitis. After meningitis, it was a second chance to correct what was wrong with me inside. If I hadn’t been ill, I might have ended up as a lazy wannabee. Yes, it toughened me up. You can wallow in self-pity or you can do the opposite. Yes, having such a serious illness was clearly a blessing in disguise for me. It forced me to move forward and it gave me my drive. ‘Corporate’ has rhythms that sound Orwellian. What is it about?

(cryptically) It might be about the music label… but it could also be about Donald Trump! I don’t like the world being run by ‘headless chickens’. What you end up with is big business and the Panama Papers…

Can you tell us about the album cover that you painted?

It’s a painting of a Hopi Indian who is the jokester or prankster of the tribe. Every culture has a jester and it is something I associate with and I can relate to. I have loved painting since I was a child but I don’t paint for commercial reasons, more for enjoyment and for our album covers. Your parents were Irish but you grew up in England. Do you feel a pull more towards Ireland or England?

Both. My Dad was from Galway and my Mum was from Cork. When I was in Ireland, the Irish would say I was English. When I was in England, the English would say I was Irish! (laughs). I have both British and Irish passports. With time, I thinking having both influences is an advantage, not a disadvantage, as it makes you more open-minded.

What did you learn from being in the Sex Pistols?

How to get out as quickly as possible!

I felt it was becoming a joke, trying to turn us into the Rolling Stones. My final

statement at the last gig was: “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” and I think the rest of the band felt the same way.

What was punk for you?

Punk gave freedom to women, to have

mixed-race bands, to end false barriers. With the Sex Pistols we weren’t

interested in divisions of North and South, it was about unity and doing your own thing.

How do you feel about fellow Londoner David Bowie and his recent death?

I thought his passing was very classy with no pomp at all…

How does London compare to Los Angeles in terms of a place to live and work? What is the difference?

The weather! London was a shit-hole

when I was growing up and it’s a shit-

hole now…that’s about it, really. Of course, I miss the culture, the comedy

and the pub life but I don’t miss the cold and the damp of England. Due to respiratory problems, my flu could easily turn to bronchitis and to pneumonia

Tell us about you recent book ‘Anger is an Energy’, which I got out from the library while on holiday in London. I thought it was enjoyable and a great read.

I’ve always loved writing but I felt that if I wrote that book too early it would be full of self-pity. Writing books is more of an achievement for me than anything I’ve done in pop music. Libraries saved me and educated me. I’m energy and ideas. There’s always something going on, high energy, even when I’m sleeping. I like the fact that you got my book out of a library! Any views on Dennis Skinner MP being ejected from the Houses of Parliament for refusing to apologise for calling Cameron ‘Dodgy Dave’?

I’ve heard a lot worse… I follow the Houses of Parliament broadcast weekly on American television. I love all the one-liners the politicians come up with! You have said that Olivier’s Richard III was an influence on your stage persona. You also follow football. They found the King’s bones under a car park in Leicester not so long ago. It may be a strange phenomenon but in La Ola Fresca most of our best loved cakes seem to adopt personalities all of their own. From the arrival of the muchpursued ‘El Señor Brownie’ came his happy partnership with his sun-kissed, wheat-free, partner-in-crime ‘Gloria Zanahoria’ (carrot cake with rice flour and almonds). Then recently, out of nowhere, the voluptuous dolce vita of the cake world ‘Hannah Banana’ has arrived on the scene! Yes, you can certainly put away the calorie counter for this one, because it involves all the evils of sugar, cream, eggs and chocolate. The only saving grace being the potassium-rich bananas which may help to ward off the muscle cramps of all the push-ups you will have to do afterwards to balance your conscience. Preparation

HANNAH BANANA CAKE Ingredients

Cake • 8 oz / 250 gm butter (room temperature) • 8 oz / 250 gm sugar (preferably light brown muscovado) • 8 oz / 250 gm plain white flour • 1 packet self-raising agent • 4 free-range medium-sized eggs • 2 ripe bananas • 1 teaspoon ground ginger • Pinch cinnamon • Pinch salt

Chocolate sauce • 225 gm dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids), broken into squares • 150 ml milk • 75 ml double cream • 40 gm sugar

To serve, chilled whipped cream and chopped banana.

SIMALÚ When the editor of this magazine told me that this month’s restaurant of the month was to be a recently opened Peruvian in the Barrio del Carmen, I was really quite excited. It is a cuisine I don’t really know that much about. I have tried ceviche and I had heard of the Peruvian cocktail Pisco Sour. Although I am a great fan of cocktails, I have never tried one. We arrived on a chilly Wednesday evening and were warmly welcomed at the door by the guy touting in the street for business, he handed us over to our server for the evening. She suggested we do a degustación – a taster menu of the chef’s recommendations. We ordered a bottle of the house red, a nice smooth ‘Ribera del Duero’ (12€) bottled

for the restaurant with their own label. Simalú is a small restaurant located in

C/ Caballeros near Plaza Manises. It is on three levels and is quite plain, with

seating for about eight customers on the ground level, high tables on the lower

floor for a further 20 or so, and more on the mezzanine.

Our first dish arrived, a beautifully

presented dish called ‘Causa limeña

rellena de bonito’, which consisted of a cylindrical-shaped tower of yellow potato stuffed with a layer of avocado

mayonnaise. It was topped with tuna and garnished with slices of mild onion

and tiny ‘lágrimas’ (tear-shaped red peppers), and sprinkled with flowers and baby leaves. It was beautiful to look at and really quite delicious to eat.

Next came another lovingly presented dish, this time a ceviche of corvina and langoustine served with warm sweet potato and the biggest kernels of buttery corn, and topped with two kinds of seaweed and a slice of red pepper. Once again, not only wonderful to look at but a joy to savour. Ceviche is fresh raw fish and/or seafood ‘cooked’ or marinated in lime juice, onions and chilli. Gustavo, one of the owners of Simalú, arrived at this point and we chatted briefly. He told us that we had two more dishes to come – a fish course and finally a meat course. The fish arrived at the table in the form of griddled fresh tuna topped with a large red gamba (prawn) and served with a reduction of fish and seafood. Perfectly cooked. This was another memorable dish.

SIMALÚ At this point D and I were getting really quite full, but there was still another dish to come! This final dish was ‘Chicharrón de cerdo con salsa Haucatay’ and a crisp slice of fried yucca. A braised and fried rib of pork served in a slightly tart sauce made from a plant indigenous to Peru. Crisp but melt-in-the-mouth and, yes, you guessed it, once again delicious. We followed this with a postre of chocolate cake with a white chocolate ice cream and a mango sorbet. Really excellent, although by this point we were so full we couldn’t really do it justice! Barrio del Carmen from Cánovas and I wish them every success in their new location. The food is quite simply delicious, one of the best meals we have had in Valencia this last year. The service is friendly and attentive. The Menú degustación is fantastic value at 25 euros. There are wines from both Peru and Spain on their small list. Cocktails and beers are on offer, too. There is a great value Menú del día at 10€ and an ‘Executive menú’ at 13.90€ available Monday – Friday offering signature dishes. Evening menús are 20€ and the Menú degustación is 25€. Tim Birch

Negredo poked home a winner with virtually the last kick of the game to give the home side a well-deserved win.

April put a smile back on the faces of Valencia fans as the club removed any lingering doubts of a possible relegation and beat both Sevilla and Barcelona in the process.

The only sour note was the actions of Sofiane Feghouli. He has angered some supporters by refusing to sign a new contract extension and he was booed by sections of the home crowd when he joined the game late in the second half.

The lacklustre display against Las Palmas in Gran Canaria at the beginning of the month was soon forgotten when Valencia got the better of Sevilla in their next game. Both teams have a strong dislike for each other and any chance that Valencia had of upsetting Sevilla’s Champions League aspirations would be well received by the Mestalla faithful. Returning favourites, Banega, Rami and the manager Unai Emery got a frosty reception as Valencia started the game brightly. Los Chés continued to have the better of the first half exchanges and were rewarded just before halftime when Parejo’s free kick deceived Sergio Rico in the visitor’s goal to send the Curva Nord behind the goal into raptures. The second half was much more cagey but came to life when the lively Kévin Gameiro beat Alves on his near post with just four minutes remaining to level the game. However, the drama was not complete, as former Sevilla star

He then inflamed the situation by refusing to join in the goal celebrations when Negredo scored, deciding instead to walk alone back to the centre spot. The 7-0 Copa del Rey thumping was still fresh in the supporters’ minds and they were demanding nothing less than maximum effort and a passion that has been sadly lacking in some games this season. Barcelona themselves were experiencing a slump in form, but the early expected onslaught from the home

side materialised but failed to produce a goal. Valencia then shocked the league leaders with a goal that had an element of luck about it on the half hour mark. Guilherme Siqueria made a darting raid down the left flank and his attempted cross was diverted goal-bound by the chasing Rakitić. To the horror of the Croatian, the keeper Bravo was already anticipating the cross and was left helpless as the deflection bustled the back of the Barca net. Valencia continued to play neat football and their second goal in injury time of the first period was one the hosts would have been proud of themselves. Slick interplay and then a defencesplitting pass by Parejo gave Santi Mina the simple task of slotting past the goalkeeper to double Valencia’s lead. As expected, Barca came out after the break in aggressive mode and were rewarded for their efforts when Messi converted at close range from a pull back from the by-line by Jordi Alba. A frantic last 30 minutes saw Valencia defending deeper and deeper. Outstandingly marshalled by Mustafi on his 24th birthday, the visitors kept their concentration and managed to frustrate the hosts to record a famous victory. Eibar came next to Mestalla and the hosts carried on their good form with a convincing 4-0 victory. Three to the good by half-time thanks to the perfect hat trick by Alcácer (left foot, right foot and header), the game was over as a contest. A relaxed and confident Valencia played some of their best football this year and it was no surprise when Cancelo added to the score early in the second half. The last part of the game was played like a training game. By this time the fans were hoping for a clean sheet in La Liga rather than more goals. Valencia obliged for the first time in 23 league games, the last being the 3-0 demolition of Levante in late October. A trip to relegation-threatened Getafe came next. Another Parejo free kick special put Valencia in front but two goals for the home side midway through the second half seemed to have given the Madrid-based side maximum points. However, with just a handful of minutes remaining, Negredo bulldozed his way into the penalty area before deftly flicking it back inside to Alcácer, who slammed home unmarked from close range. With four goals in his last two games, the striker from Torrent is looking to

confirm a place with the Spanish national squad in this summer’s European Championships. The first game of May epitomised Valencia’s season. Plenty of neat play in midfield but very little threat in the opposition’s penalty box. Coupled with the inability to keep a clean sheet and the confidence Villarreal are playing with at the moment, it was no surprise that the local rivals took three points in a comfortable 2-0 victory. With Real Madrid at Bernabeu next on the horizon. it gives the players the opportunity to reward the fans with another unexpected victory before they finish their league campaign at home to Real Sociedad. Levante meanwhile look in deep trouble and are firmly rooted at the bottom of La Liga. Two home draws with Gijón and Bilbao were sandwiched in between a last-minute victory over Espanyol. However, a 1-0 loss at Betis and a heavy defeat at fellow strugglers Granada, combined with surprise victories for the other teams at the foot of the table, have left Los Granotas with a major task ahead of them to avoid a return to the Adelante. LEVANTE CRICKET CLUB IN VALENCIA The ancient and magnificent game of cricket, beloved of English folk and of all the peoples with whom they have mingled, has taken root in Valencia. Her fertile soil and benign climate has proved stimulating and supporting of the tender shoots that emerged in 2012 when a group of pioneering aficionados began to knock a ball about in any space large enough to accommodate them. Now in its fifth year, Levante Cricket Club continues to share the municipal facilities (used also by the baseball and softball teams) in the riverbed park, just ‘upstream’ from the Torres de Serrano. A record 17 home league fixtures will be held on weekends between 21-22

May and 25 September, all of which should provide excellent weekend entertainment in the afternoon. LCC continues to attract new playing members and is also open to all who have an interest in the game, including those unable to commit to an active role who would like to participate in the activities of the club as scorer, umpire or coach.

VILLARREAL VS LIVERPOOL MATCH the lives lost to football. It was a great reminder that lives and deaths matter more than football. Despite its historical importance, the match we attended on Thursday, 28 April was a celebration of life. There was a packed, 25,000-capacity Madrigal stadium, 3,000 of whom were Red supporters who had travelled the 1,000 km distance from Merseyside to Villarreal. While we’re going to press, the final outcome of the two-leg duel is a mystery, but the last minute goal by Adrián, giving the Yellow Submarine a 1-0 lead, could well mean the first European Cup final for Villarreal. This would be 10 years after their greatest achievement so far, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League against another English side… Arsenal. For a city of less than 50,000 souls, where the unflinching support of 22,000 locals has carried the team to the top flight of European football in the last two decades, hosting European champions Liverpool in itself is a massive achievement.

THE BRITISH INVASION OF THE YELLOW SUBMARINE There are certain circumstances in life that put the judgement of even the greatest of legends in question. Legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly led the ‘Reds’ from 1959 to 1974 and raised Liverpool FC from second division to the heights of English football. Under him, Liverpool FC won three first division titles, two FA Cups, four Charity Shields as well as a UEFA Cup. and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you, it’s much more important than that.” In the wake of Liverpool’s Europa League semi-final in the small town of Vila-Real just outside of Castellón, less than an hour from Valencia (known simply as Villarreal for most of the world), was one of those nights when, despite the stakes at hand, football took on another dimension. Just the week before the match, the 96 Liverpudlian victims of the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy were served justice by court rulings. The visitors have honoured the victims by dressing Anfield in red colours with the number 96 and Villarreal fans prepared a special ‘96 – You’ll Never Walk Alone’ banner to commemorate

To put things into an historical perspective, at the time of the Hillsborough tragedy in 1989, Liverpool had already been crowned champions of the European Cup four times. Despite the ban on English teams from European competition at the time, they were already one of the most popular teams in Europe. In the meantime, Villarreal were in Segunda B (Spanish third division), and still a decade away from their debut in Primera. The club, founded in 1923, had been fighting for local hegemony against their old-time local rivals Castellón. Due to relentless hard work and good management, they have slowly taken over football fans’ hearts in the region and remain a staying power of the Spanish and European football scene in the last decade and a half. Before hosting Liverpool, six other previous European club champions had set foot in Villarreal in the past 13 years: Bayern Munich, Manchester United,

In a way, Villarreal’s current status is close to a miracle, given the size of the city, and it shows both the immense strength of Spanish football and its global reach. It is a fairy tale that has come close to a happy end three times, with three European semifinals on board the Yellow Submarine, and a staggering total of 50 wins in 83 European games (counting the 1-0 win against Liverpool). Only three other European teams matched Villarreal’s numbers in reaching 50 wins before: Juventus, Tottenham and Borussia Mönchengladbach in their respective European debuts.

The local club’s inflatable Yellow Submarine was paraded around town to the rhythm of the Beatles trademark song, much to the astonishment of the Liverpool

In a sense, the two teams are in a very different position as far as their immediate future. Liverpool are fighting mid-table in the Premiership this season, but the recent signing of star manager Jürgen Klopp from Dortmund has given them new hope. And yet their place in European competition next season depends on a hypothetical Europa League title. On the other hand, Villarreal are firmly on their way to securing fourth place in La Liga BBVA, so their Champions League participation is more than likely. Klopp, who called himself the “Normal One” upon arrival to Liverpool, a nickname that has instantly

There is an old joke going around since the times of the Beatles, when the locals easily explained to the rest of the world why Fab Four’s fans used to scream at them at concerts: they were amazed at seeing four Scousers hard at work at the same time. Now put that into a football perspective: the Kop are amazed at seeing 11 of their boys hard at work during 90 minutes every game ever since Klopp’s arrival.
