Yes. In June, Valencia comes into its own. It’s a time when people can sense that the holidays are coming and work becomes less of a chore. Chilling out on the terrazas, meeting up with friends and loved ones, trips to the beaches and the mountains all make the summer in Junio a time for ‘living’ in the moment. If eating out is your thing, we have a treat for you as our restaurant of the month is ‘Contrapunto’, which serves international cuisine with stunning views of the City of Arts and Sciences. In the centre of town, we visit the newish ‘Sofartcafé’ with its attractive combination of quality food, drink and cultural events. Set in the hip barrio of Benimaclet, Helen Westwater of La Ola Fresca has a ‘pan de queso’ recipe just for readers. On the sports front, our football expert John Howden takes a look at the European Championship tournament that includes players from the Valencia region. In ‘Valencia Books’, we interview writer Robert Yareham who has just published a new book called ‘English Language Movies Made in Spain.’ In ‘Clubland’, Wills Matt takes a look at the clubs opening up by the beach as

well as the somewhat quirky events taking place in Valencia as it reflects the world of 21st century social media. On this subject, we have a report on the international co-working space ‘Wayco’ in the old centre. Check out exclusive photos of clubbers in ‘24/7 Valencia Party People’ as well as clubbing and live music nights in our packed agenda at the back. In Valencia Music, we interview local band ‘Naima’ with their potent mix of virtuoso jazz and indie-rock influences. We also have an exclusive interview with Chevi Martínez, the new co-director of the 20th Jazz Festival of Valencia. It’s good to know that the powers-that-be are actually choosing people with real experience to run cultural events. Let’s hope that this is a good sign for the future… Many thanks to all of our contributors, readers and advertisers for making this magazine possible.Your generosity of spirit is much appreciated. Keep on shining and have a great summer! 24/7 Valencia team

XX JAZZ FESTIVAL OF PALAU DE LA MUSICA

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CHEVI MARTÍNEZ The 2016 edition of the Festival de Jazz del Palau, which starts at the end of this month, promises a new direction for the festival. A new team has been brought in to run this year’s edition. The Sedajazz collective, led by Francisco Blanco, ‘Latino’, and Chevi Martínez, the manager and booker of the classic Barrio del Carmen jazz club Jimmy Glass, are co-directing the 2016 event and have formed a management team

under the banner of ‘Unitz Jazz’. Chevi Martínez spoke to us on behalf of Unitz Jazz about plans for the new look festival. How did you get this team together?

Well, we have thought for a while that the Jazz Festival needed a new direction, so we decided to get together to pool our efforts with the aim of creating ideas for a festival with more content and one that would be more in tune with the reality of jazz in this city. Latino Blanco, backed by the Sedajazz collective, spoke to me about the possibility of doing something together and so we set to work. With this in mind we created the Unitz team. Each of us brought our

experience in working with jazz to the

table, and together we started to try to find ways in which we could put our

ideas into practice. Take into account

that both Sedajazz and Jimmy Glass have been active for 25 years and we promote and perform jazz music in Valencia throughout the year.

Unitz

Jazz was created as a management,

scheduling and production team for the staging of the 20th Festival de Jazz del Palau. We presented our project and

they put us in charge of organising the festival.

What in your opinion are the most striking differences we will see in the 20th edition of the Jazz Festival?

Well, there will be quite a few differences. We have created a festival which will

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CHEVI MARTÍNEZ be more participatory, dynamic, open and diverse. There will be a substantial increase both in the number of concerts and the participation of local musicians, something the festival has lacked for a long time. Along with the concerts at the Palau, we are going to bring the festival out to the neighbourhoods of the city by setting up six stages in different parts of the city to promote some of the top groups in the region. These concerts will be free so it will be a great opportunity to bring jazz to the people of the city. The festival will be lengthened to two weeks and there will be 20 concerts. Are all styles of jazz represented at the festival?

Well, not all styles of jazz, that would be impossible! Ha, ha! …we would need months and months of festivals but yes, there’s great diversity in the line-up of concerts. Latino and I have tried to offer jazz for all possible tastes... As an expert and someone who has worked with jazz and jazz musicians for a long time, tell us about some of the groups and performers who’ll be appearing and what they can bring to the festival.

Well, for example, there are big international jazz stars as part of the Palau programme, like the ‘New Quartet’ of jazz giant Charles Lloyd, the greatest living saxophonist in the postColtrane era. Subtle and passionate, a true jazz icon, he’ll be accompanied by pianist Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers on bass and Eric Harland on drums in an incredible quartet. There’s the legendary multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal and his septet, recognised around the world as one of the most improvisational and innovative contemporary Brazilian composers of all time. We have a touch of the avant-garde tradition in the festival with the great master of the soprano and tenor sax Dave Liebman playing with the Austrian trio Vein, absolute geniuses. The big band of the great saxophonist Perico Sambeat will present his latest record

‘Voces’ with singers Carme Canela and Viktorija Pilatovic. There will be the Latin jazz of Iván ‘Melón’ Lewis and the Cuban Swing Express, a spectacular show with an ensemble of 10 musicians who recreate the golden age of Cuban music with a contemporary twist. We’ll also have, of course, the traditional free concert in the Palau gardens with the marvellous Santandreu Jazz Band led by Joan Chamorro, who’ll be offering us their repertoire of great jazz standards. Apart from jazz, strictly speaking, Juan Perro is a quartet in which Santiago Auserón performs with the Valencia trumpet player David Pastor in a style that falls somewhere between singer/ songwriter and jazz. There’ll also be a fusion of classical music and jazz in the concert performed by the Valencia Symphony Orchestra with the Sedajazz Ensemble and the Ars String Quartet. We’ll also have the ‘Big Team’, a multinational group made up of trumpet player Michael Mossman, saxophonist Jesús Santandreu, Galician pianist Abe Rábade, Portuguese bass player Nelson Cascais, Carlos Martín on trombone and German drummer Eric Ineke. There are three more groups from the Valencia jazz scene: the powerful delivery of Ramón Cardo & the Nyora Boppers, the masterful Carlos Gonzálbez & Fabio Miano Quintet and the vocal swing of the Domisol Sisters, so jazz for every taste. Out in the local barrios, we have an inaugural jam session in the Ensanche district bringing together some of the musicians taking part in the festival and in the Cabanyal, there’ll be a concert performed by a group of outstanding students from Berklee Valencia. In Ruzafa, the Prototype will perform a glorious homage to organist Lou Bennett and we’ll be enjoying the Miquel Asensio Quartet’s new world music project in Benimaclet will perform his latest recording ‘Senda Nova’. ‘Le

Dancing Pepa Swing Band’ will offer a big dose of authentic swing for the audience and lindy hop dancers in La Seu, while the rising young Valencian star Víctor Jiménez Quartet & Friends will be playing in the Carmen. And for kids, the Sedajazz Kids Band will be presenting their CD in the Cristal Room at Valencia Town Hall and ‘Jazzetjant amb Xiquets’ will be performing an interactive concert for families in the Sala García Navarro at the Palau. Will the different jazz clubs in the city be taking part in some way in the festival?

If you take into account the size of the programme of festival concerts and because it isn’t easy to include venues away from the Palau, at the moment we can only refer to the different jams taking place in the city during the week as activities parallel to the festival. Can you tell us a little about prices? Are there any festival pass tickets which allow you to attend several concerts?

The prices range from 12€ to the most expensive tickets at 30€. We have made an effort to make them as accessible as possible, because we want the festival to be less exclusive and attract the greatest number of people. There will be a festival pass with approximately a 15% discount. What would you say about this festival to someone who has never attended a jazz concert?

On behalf of Unitz Jazz, we would encourage them to approach jazz music without fear. Jazz offers a vast wealth of experiences, let yourselves be carried away by its beautiful power. This is a very accessible festival for the vast majority of people. So don’t think twice and collaborate with those of us who are working so that jazz in the Valencian Region remains an active force, the organisers and the many great musicians… Interview by David Rhead and José Marín

VALENCIA MUSIC LUIS TORREGROSA RAFAEL RAMOS SANIA

ENRIQUE RUIZ

NAIMA How did ‘Naima’ begin?

Naima began in 2004 with the intention of making music, influenced by jazz but not in any way bound to its rules and regulations. Even with the risk of being caught in no man’s land where no one can box us into a category, we prefer to develop our creativity by following our own tastes and influences... regardless of the genre. What are your musical influences?

They are extensive. Naima gets inspiration from modern jazz bands like Brad Mehldau, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Avishai Cohen, Christian Scott. Instrumental groups beyond the strict confines of jazz that move us are Jaga Jazzist, Tortoise, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Of course, we are also influenced by a wide range of popular music including Elliott Smith, Pixies, the Smiths, Radiohead, Aphex Twin... What is it like to live in Valencia as a musician?

Well, the typical option of living just from music is to play live but also to give music lessons. If not, you have to find work outside of music to make a living here. Living just from music alone is very difficult here, even more so with a project like Naima where we invest a lot of time in creating the music, recording it, rehearsing it as well as the work involved in promoting and distributing the record. Even with a strong record company like our American label Cuneiform Records, which gives us support on an international level, you’ve still got be working every day for the group in one way or another. You also have to play a lot outside of Valencia. You cannot play in Valencia every week. You risk getting saturated and, on top of that, the audience isn’t that big to begin with. Tell us a bit about each song on your new album, ‘Bye’.A Father’s Anthem:

It’s a hymn. You sense melancholy in the harmony. It’s begins with a soft piano that contrasts with the end of the track where the drums and double bass distort and dominate in a brazen finale.

Bye:

It’s the track on the album that best combines the acoustic sound with the electronic. The arpeggiator unifies the bass lines with the synth phrases. The piano gravitates within this mass of sound, looking for a space. This is the most dynamic part of the Naima sound and an area we plan to develop on our future records. This track and the opener have an air of farewell to them. It is an “Adiós”, a homage to loved ones who have passed away. Al Llegar Sabríamos Tanto Como Ella:

It’s a track with a certain groove but it’s not an obvious one. The piano defines the groove the most but the drums and double bass also create rhythmic patterns that create interest from beginning to end. We want people to dance to this number. We are all very used to very intense dance tracks but it doesn’t always have to be that way. Future Imperfect:

This is a dystopia (a not-good place) set to song. We can imagine a dark

FOOD

PAN DE QUESO

By Helen Westwater La Ola FrescaWith just under two months to go to the opening of the XXXI Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, we get ahead of the game with our recipe for Brazilian “Pão de Queijo” (pan de queso). Pão de queijo originated from the African slave trade and was made from the residue of the processed tapioca root, which was discarded as not fit to eat. A good choice as tapioca, which comes from the cassava plant otherwise known as yucca, is high in carbohydrate and so helps to put weight on! Originally it was literally just balls of rolled baked starch but later, in the principal dairy-producing Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, milk & cheese & eggs were added to the mix. So with these added ingredients plus the oil, we are really going to have to take up Olympic shot-putting to eat these Moreish little numbers. When served direct from the oven, they have a light yet chewy texture that makes them absolutely irresistible. They are also so easy to make that, while Brazil may be struggling to get ready on time, you won’t be late for any deadlines. Pre-heat the oven to 180C / 300F.

PAN DE QUESO

Ingredients (makes about 35)

• 250 ml milk • 250 ml light olive oil • 250 ml water • 1 kg yucca flour • 6 eggs300 gm strong cheese, grated (for example, cheddar or parmesano)

Prepare 2 baking trays with greaseproof paper. First mix all the liquid ingredients (milk, olive oil and water) and bring to the boil in a saucepan. Being careful not to burn your hands, mix with the flour, the beaten eggs and grated cheese. With a spoon and your hands roll into small ball shapes and place on the ready prepared baking trays. Leave enough space between each ball for them to grow a little in the oven. Cook in oven at approximately 180C

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

CONTRAPUNTO Having previously eaten at this restaurant some months before our dinner date for ‘24/7 Valencia’, we were very excited about a repeat visit. Our first dinner had been soon after its reopening...more about that later. The restaurant is ‘Contrapunto’, part of the Reina Sofia Palau de Les Arts, on the terrace below. It is a lovely space, the backdrop is a lattice of wood stretching along the rear wall and looking a lot like a whale has started to drop down from above. It’s the dominant feature of the room and was constructed by one of Valencia’s Fallas sculptors – for those of you who may not know about Las Fallas, it is a spring fiesta whose centrepieces are paper-mâché figures. The opposite side is all glass, offering you a wonderful view of the City of Arts and Sciences, particularly in the setting sun. Outside there is a large sheltered

terrace, where you can have cocktails and snacks... and soon an array of tapas. We sat at our table, looking out at the view, and got down to the business of choosing the wine. We settled on a Juan Gil 2013, a fruity and lovely Jumilla red (23€) and perused the menu. It’s an eclectic mix of Spanish, world and Oriental dishes. The starters include oysters, ceviche, gyozas and cannelloni. Also on offer are Extremadura bellota hams, cheeses (from here and there, it says on the menu), anchovies, smoked sardines and salads. We chose Tartar de atún con aguacate y sesamo (cubed raw tuna marinated in citrus and mixed with avocado and sesame seeds, 12.50€) and Tacos de lengua de vaca (four small tortillas topped with stewed tongue and served with chopped onion, cucumber and wedges of lime, 9.00€). We were debating about whether to share the Olé mis huevos (an egg poached for 35 minutes at a temperature of 64°C,

served on Parmentier potatoes with fresh truffle and a jus of pig’s tail and wild mushroom and black Himalayan salt, 8.50€). Our maitre d’ convinced us to have one each, as we had had it on our previous visit. All three starters were excellent. We particularly liked the Tuna tartar. We certainly should have shared the egg dish as there was some wonderful bread served, too, and it was perfect with them, just too much with what was to follow! And so, on to the main course, a little too full! There are intriguing choices to be made here from Sea bass with hoisin mayonnaise, Hake served with beef tendons and a jus of turnips and parsnips, or a Thai-style Rockfish all i pebre (all i pebre is a typical Valencian dish usually made with eel), steaks and venison.D chose the Corvina con crema acidulada y okra (a Sea bass steak perfectly cooked and served with a sour cream sauce and okra, 15.00€). I went for the Presa Ibérica marinara con

miso, shake y mirin con trigo y pesto rojo (two seared, wedge-shaped pieces of marinated pork served with a jus of miso, sake mirin, with wheat berries and red pesto, 17.00€). Once again, the presentation and quality of the dishes served was excellent, the fish moist and delicious and the pork tender and full of interesting flavour combinations. I should mention that, this being Valencia, there are a selection or rice and fideuà dishes. The rice dishes are all ‘melosos’, which are wetter than a traditional paella. The fideuàs are called rossejats in Contrapunto. If you want to try the rice or fideuà dishes, bear in mind that, like all good paellas, there is a minimum order of two persons sharing. We really did not need a dessert, but soldiered on for your sakes! D had the Requesón de galanga con helado de romero cítrico (a fresh cream cheese flavoured with galangal with a citrusy

rosemary ice cream, 6.00€). I couldn’t resist the Torrija de brioche carmelizada (egg dipped brioche, deep-fried and served with crème anglaise – or custard, 7.00€). We managed to finish it all, and very delicious it was, too. We noticed on the desserts page of the menu ‘NIÑOS - A jugar en la mesa,’ and asked our maître d’ to explain. It turned out to be a children’s menu consisting of mini-burgers and home-made chicken nuggets, drink and dessert included. This is the second opening for this excellent restaurant. It first opened two years ago but was forced to close when the outer shell of the opera house had to be renovated. It reopened at the beginning of this year with new chef Pablo Ministro and new menus, new staff (except for Ionuț, our extremely attentive and pleasant maitre d’) and new playlist, featuring quite a lot of Beatles. The management are obviously fans of the Fab Four – there’s a starter

called Octopus Garden, homenaje a The Beatles. We didn’t try it, but it is fried octopus with smoked paprika and salsa mery, a sauce made from olive oil, parsley, garlic and lemon juice). This really is a lovely venue, and the price/quality ratio is excellent. We’ve eaten food that is half as good for a lot more money and with not half as good a view. There will soon be a tapas menu, so you will be able to have a drink and a snack in this lovely part of the City of Arts and Sciences. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Tim Birch

It’s one of those secret places that you get taken to one night and may never know how to find again. It’s the hidden Valencia. It is situated near the Generalitat Palace in the historic centre known as the Barrio del Carmen. This bar specialises in quality music that covers many styles and eras. here with their ‘oceanic rhythms’ from the ‘60s as well as the 1920s and the 1990s. Their record selections are always special, ideal for those with good ears and restless feet! When you get talking to the locals, you’ll find they will tell you that this is a bar like you used to find in “the old days”, a place where you really feel at home, a place to chat and dance and enjoy with friends that you only leave at closing time because there are no other options! You will always find the co-owners, Rebeca and Bart, at GONG. They are good people and open to all sorts of conversations regarding music, art and they can also give tips to travellers who are a bit lost, trying to find their way around the historic centre. Indeed, Bart is a veritable encyclopaedia regarding music! During the week, you will find that the atmosphere is more relaxed with diverse activities like theatre improvisations and antique auctions. It’s at the weekend that the atmosphere heats up and you get to groove to a

surprisingly varied range of music for your ears. You’ll also find DJ sessions & acoustic concerts as well as occasional

events like vinyl fairs and hippy markets. Tapas are not available but they have some spectacular cocktails and beers,

including a local cerveza as well as beer on tap. They also have chupitos

of absinthe as well as ‘Pardal de la

Albufera’, a cream liqueur made from rice, traditional to the areas where the best rice is produced for paella.

SUPER VICTOR EURO 2016

‘LE RENDEZVOUS’ WITH SUPER VICTOR After a mixed season for the three Valencia Region clubs that saw Villarreal qualify for the Champions League, Valencia confined to midtable mediocrity and Levante suffer the ignominy of relegation to Liga Adelante, the football world is now turning its attention to the 15th edition of the UEFA European Championships. The quadrennial competition takes place this summer between 10th June and 10 July in France. The slogan for the tournament is ‘Le Rendezvous’, and the competition’s mascot is the quirkily named Super Victor. Several of the Valencia-based players have got themselves a ‘rendezvous’ with their respected countries, but there were also notable disappointments for several local-based footballers. Spain, holders since 2008, were one of the first countries to name their squad and there were mixed feelings in the region with Vicente del Bosque’s selection. Bruno Soriano has been rewarded for a great season with

the ‘Yellow Submarine’ with a place in the provisional squad of 25 for La Selección. The defensive midfielder, who has spent his entire career with Villarreal, made his debut for Spain just after the 2014 World Cup victory in a friendly in Mexico City that ended in a 1-1 draw. The final squad will be whittled down to 23 just before the tournament starts and locals will be crossing their fingers that Bruno is not one of the two selections to miss out on the trip to France. One player who will be incredibly upset at being omitted is Paco Alcácer. The Torrent- born striker was his country’s top scorer in the qualifying phase of the competition but he has paid the price for a club rotation policy that saw Alcácer or Negredo given the sole striking role for Valencia in league games, depending on the make-up of the opposition. His controversial exclusion has been the talk of the sporting media in Spain and former Valencia favourite Santiago Cañizares has been especially critical of Del Bosque’s decision. With Diego Costa and Fernando Torres also missing out, the onus could be on former Valencia idol Aritz Aduriz to repeat his goal scoring feats this season

with Athletic Bilbao on the international stage. Another Valencia player to feel the pain of non-inclusion is the Portuguese right back João Cancelo. At times he has played the role of the marauding wing-back to perfection at Mestalla this season, most notably in Gary Neville’s first league victory against Espanyol, but again his inconsistency and flipflopping out of the team with fellow right back Antonio Barragán has cost him dear. His compatriot André Gomes has been luckier and will be heading to France to represent Portugal. The undoubtedly talented attacking midfielder has personified the ‘hotchpotch’ of a season that Valencia fans have had to endure. As often as he has been brilliant he has been ‘regular’, and with Juventus intensifying their interest, he may well have played his last game for Los Chés if he has a successful tournament with ‘Das Quinas’. One player on Valencia’s books who definitely deserves to go to France is defender Shkodran Mustafi. Once on Everton’s books, the German born to Albanian parents was one of the bright spots of the campaign in La Liga this season. Ruled out of any further

participation in the 2014 World Cup at the last 16 stage because of injury, he will be hoping for better luck and a clean bill of health this time around. Injury looks to have put pay to any outside chance on-loan Denis Cheryshev had of playing for Russia in the competition and the slim chances Rúben Vezo (Portugal) and Zakaria Bakkali (Belgium) had of making the cut were extinguished when they were not even named in the provisional squads for their respective countries. With the tournament expanded to 24 teams, the six groups have thrown up some interesting match-ups in the initial stages of the tournament. Hosts France will play Rumania, Switzerland and Albania in Group A. The France vs Switzerland game could see former Valencia defender Philippe Senderos (Grasshoppers) in a contest which could well decide the winners of the group. Another old Valencia face Adil Rami (Sevilla) may now also feature, having been drafted into the hosts’ squad at the final hour for the injured Raphaël Varane of Real Madrid. England, Wales, Russia and Slovakia contest Group B. Gary Neville will be hoping his time on the England bench

as England’s assistant manager proves more successful than his short tenure on the banquillo at Mestalla. Group C will see Germany favourites to see off Northern Ireland, Poland and Ukraine. The side from the UK look to have an uphill battle and it seems the match between the two Eastern European teams could decide who joins Shkodran Mustafi’s team in the latter stages of the competition. Spain do not have the easiest of tasks in Group D. Croatia, Turkey and the Czech Republic could all cause problems. With no current Valencia faces in the current squad, it will be left to former players Jordi Alba, Isco, David Silva and Aduriz to fly the flag for the country’s third biggest city. Group E is on paper the proverbial “Group of Death” with Italy, Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Sweden fighting for the two play-off places. Giuseppe Rossi’s loan move from Fiorentina to Levante was heralded on two fronts – to save Levante from relegation and assist his personal chances of making the Italian squad. It failed miserably on both counts, but the Azzurri are shrewd tournament competitors and it will be a surprise if they are not one of the two

teams that do advance from the four. The final group matches will be played between Austria, Hungary, Iceland and Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo and company seem to have one of the easier draws in the first phase of the competition and should take top spot. The other three teams will be quietly confident of securing the second berth, with goal difference being a possible factor. One thing is for sure, a rendezvous with France in June is a must for all soccer fans. Super Mario (Götze) scored the deciding goal in the last major football competition (the 2014 World Cup). This time round, Super Victor could prove to be the lucky omen for a number of countries. Greece were as high as 500-1 with some bookmakers when they won the Euros in 2004 so a ‘Leicester miracle’ could occur twice in one year. However, a victory for the usual suspects more likely and another summer fiesta celebration in España is a distinct possibility, despite the sparsity of La Selección players with Valencia links this time round. CLUBLAND

SUMMER IS A-COMING, Y’ALL

Ah, June! This is the time of year people’s mood improves as workload decreases and the weather just keeps getting better. We have more time and energy to go out and get smashed, I mean… be culturally aware, socially active and more willing to partake in events and gatherings where beverages are consumed while music plays in the background. Anyway, summer is very nigh, and here is a little list of places you might want to check out this month. The beach clubs are opening their doors and new clubs are appearing on the scene. Let’s start off by talking about trends. Now, capitalising on trends is just something that businesses do to attract a wider audience. And now nightclubs are hosting app and movie-themed nights. An example of this is Umbracle (Av. Professor López Piñero, 5). They will be hosting a Snapchat night. If you’re not familiar with this, it’s what your mates use to film you at your absolute drunkest and share it with the world to see. Another interesting event is the Great Gatsby night on Saturday. Now, if like me you were dragged to see this film at the cinema with the missus and thought, “That’s two hours of my life I’m never getting back”… you’re just in luck, because you might get dragged to this, too, on 11 June!! And don’t worry, entrance is FREE!! So get those spats out, because it’s going to be a jazzy night. Another interesting theme for a night is ‘F*** Me, I’m Anonymous’ (there are weirder ones throughout the article, trust me). The ‘Anonymous’ are the cyber vigilantes who threaten to spam your Twitter account if they don’t agree with you or your politics. Real heroes. So, it makes total sense that Mya (Av. del Professor López Piñero, 5) will host a night in their honour? Anyway, it’s the club underneath Umbracle, so kill two birds with one stone. Free entrance,

EDM music and great VIP area if you fancy splashing the cash. If you want an even more respected club in Valencia, it has to be one of the most famous for over 20 years. The infamous Barraca (C/ Les Palmeres, Sueca), the last club on the Ruta del Bacalao. You might want to go on 11 June, great minimal electro and a sizeable venue with different parts. The DJ to look out for is Joseph Capriati. 15€ entrance fee until 02.30h, 1 drink included. If you have ever been to Moon (C/ San Vicente, 200) and thought that the scene is a bit… too old for you, fear not. They are now introducing Ever sessions! In order to appeal to a younger audience, the music will be focused on what’s currently ‘hip’ and ‘down with it’, which unfortunately means reggaeton amongst others. But the venue is quite impressive with a lengthy terrace and good cocktails. Remember I was talking about themed nights? Yeah, well, whoever is coming up with these themes and names might have some issues. For example, Akuarela Playa (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 152) is hosting a couple of good ones, ‘My Boyfriend is Out of Town’, and ‘Who is My Boyfriend’... Now I know after reading that you’re probably in a taxi already on your way there. But something tells me it’s just marketing… I will be going, for journalistic purposes, of course… The nights to go are any Friday or Saturday really. The venue is what sells it, right by the beach in the open air! Right, now it’s time to introduce the new club in town! The club is called Latex! (C/ Carlos Cervera, 23). Now before you run to your cupboard and pull out your leather shorts, it’s not that kind of club, soz. It is however an authentic, back -to-the-roots club with funk-influenced electro and a dance floor. You can find it right in the heart of Ruzafa. They officially open their doors to the public on Saturday, 4 June! If you don’t make it, just try your luck any

other Saturday! They claim to be the real deal, so I’m intrigued to see if they really are, or just another hipster club. Free entrance, or 8€ if you want to skip the queue. One event I am particularly looking forward to is at The Basement Voramar!, San Juan edition. What better way to greet summertime than amongst people, drinking and listening to great music as you watch the sun set in the open air? No need for an actual answer, because it’s right here! You can find this venue by the port but you have to buy your tickets ASAP as they are selling out! This event starts at 17.00h and lasts till after the sunset until 03.00h. Great music, great people and refreshing beer! If you don’t manage to get a ticket, another interesting event is the Festival de les Artes! (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias), with two days of live music with an impressive lineup featuring artists such as the Dandy Warhols, Hurt, the Fratellis, the Drums, just to name a few. You can buy your tickets online from 50€, which is an absolute bargain for the line-up you’re getting. This will take place in the City of Arts and Sciences venue. Definitely worth going to, even if it’s just for one of the two days. And finally, being the month of June with the best weather ever outside, I wouldn’t necessarily encourage anyone to go inside a club for a whole night, but rather enjoy the summer terraced clubs that are only open this time of year. But you can’t talk about clubs in Valencia without mentioning La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 3), probably the most famous indoor club in Valencia and always with an interesting line-up of DJs throughout the month. They will be having post-Festival de les Artes parties, and Gay Pride parties on 11 and 17 June, respectively. Anyway, just get out there and find your own clubs and events! See ya... Wills Matt

MOVIES MADE IN SPAIN In which small village in Guadalajara did Katherine Hepburn spend a summer making a film about Troy? Where did Steven Spielberg build his prisoner-of-war camp in Spain for ‘Empire of the Sun’? Which famous British actor tried to steal some jewels from the Spanish royal family’s summer palace in Majorca in 1969? Which Spanish city has a cinema named ‘Lara’ because ‘Doctor Zhivago’ was made there? You can trawl the Internet looking for the answers to these questions, or you can get hold of a recently published book called “Movies Made in Spain”, a guide to where 720 English language films were made in Spain.

country has made as many English language films as Spain. Even today you can find just about any kind of scenery you need and years ago, with the compliance of the dictator Franco, the Spanish army and police force were readily available to make all kinds of epics. Check out George C. Scott’s ‘Patton’, for example. If you want to know why all the German soldiers looked so happy strolling into battle, it’s because they were Spanish soldiers, having a day off from peeling potatoes as part of their obligatory military service. Cinema tourism (set-jetting) is an undeniable fact; you only need to ask the delighted authorities of New Zealand, where they are still reaping the benefits of visitors attracted by the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. Here in Spain, the number of American pilgrims

Visitors to Loja, in the province of Granada, are frequently surprised when they come across the silhouette of the Marx Brothers overlooking the village. The brothers have no connection with Loja but, curiously, the same view opens the film ‘Duck Soup’ (1933), representing Groucho’s eccentric kingdom of Sylvania. Now known as the Mirador de Sylvania, this monument is an example of the importance of set-jetting in Spain, a country where over 700 English language films have been made and continue to be made because, as Orson Welles once said, Spain is not a country, it’s a continent.

WAYCO IS GOING INTERNATIONAL We are currently living in a fastpaced world that is being increasingly populated by 21st century nomads who grow up between airports, own two passports, speak at least three languages and live out of suitcases. We are no longer asked to “think outside the box” but rather assume that there isn’t one and when asked, “Where is home?”, we say one place but really, we don’t know. Buzzwords such as ‘TCKs’ (Third Culture Kids) have become mainstream while expatriates find themselves trying to explain the ‘travel bug’ to those who just don’t have it. PUBS & CLUBS

RADIO CITY

Radio City is undoubtedly the most distinctive club in the Barrio del Carmen, a landmark that has greatly contributed to the development of culture and art in Valencia. This special bar located in the old town opened in 1979 as the first juice bar in Valencia and was gradually transformed into a home for artists, a nook where they could retreat to create, plot and to imagine some more. A shelter from the storm and place to be your yourself amid the outbreak of urban subcultures and trends that were beginning to take to the streets of Valencia after years of repression and dictatorship. The Radio City cutting edge period began as soon as it appeared and the ideas flowed endlessly. By 1997, no one could stop the growing synergy in the corner of C/ Santa Teresa. Music, art, culture, rebellion and tolerance were some of the words that would shape a constantly evolving, multi-faceted space that has not stopped growing since its inception. Mad scientists roamed within the walls of this cultural laboratory with a single mission: to create a space where everything is possible. In 1999, after the pub had been

RADIO CITY

providing life and security for more than 20 years to a neighbourhood that seemed forgotten by the local government, residents of C/ Santa Teresa, the local falla and the ‘Hope Without Borders’ organisation did not hesitate to defend Radio City against the attacks and threats of closure to the club. The residents of Velluters, who had suffered the consequences of living in an overlooked neighbourhood for many years saw the good influence that Radio City had in injecting life & culture into their area and making this part of the old town safe again. Joining forces led to a happy ending. Radio City, thanks to the support of its neighbours, could continue their work of spreading a social consciousness, assuming an essential role in the development of the cultural life of Valencia. The creation of the “little theatre” performance circuit, exhibitions and book presentations were some of the activities that emerged along the way in Radio City, whose only intention was to contribute their grain of sand to re-educating a society that had not yet opened its mind. These visionaries of culture and art have never put aside their ideology based on respect, tolerance and multiculturalism. These were the ingredients for a perfect recipe,

the secret to 37 years of constant success in making life more fun. Radio City is still a reference today on the Valencian nightlife scene, with fun guaranteed and a good atmosphere any day of the week. Check out their live nights of flamenco, reggae, open mike, countless concerts and events that make Radio City a unique place where its mantra is Carpe Diem. Help us celebrate our 37th anniversary on June 24 at 22.30h, with a fresh, fun show and great rhythm. The ‘Gypsy Cabaret’ girls have an endless desire to make you laugh out loud. After this performance, our three resident DJs will engage in a musical battle that will inevitably pull you on to the dancefloor. Warning: put on your most comfortable shoes, it is going to be a long night!!!

RAMÓN MARTÍNEZ BUADES

Tell us something your background.

My late father was a polyglot who spoke, wrote and read in Spanish, English, French and German with remarkable ease. This meant that I had a very cosmopolitan upbringing on all levels. I should also add that he was a great lover of art & music, he drew and painted and also played the guitar and piano. So I was fortunate to grow up in an artistic household as a child. Later on, as a promising student, I chose to study Fine Arts at the University of San Carlos in Valencia, where I was awarded a degree with notable grades. Did you start to draw and paint from a young age?

I really took up drawing and painting seriously at university. I started to paint professionally since my first exhibition, “Las Ciudades y El Cielo” in Galería Valle Ortí in Valencia back in the year 2000, where I managed to sell all my paintings. What are your influences?

You can find my biggest influences in the world of ‘Art Rock’… the connections I find between abstract painting and hard rock, heavy metal and Gothic groups. All of these have influenced me, combined with abstract geometry, Mondrian, Ben Nicholson and Cubism.

The Spanish sculptor Alfaro has also been an influence on my work.

With regard to music, my proficiency as a guitarist is rather more that of an amateur. I’m interested in learning skills as an electric guitarist principally and more concretely in the fields of Goth and Roll. I’m playing in a few different bands with varying styles and genres of music of but what most interests me most is to be good hard rock guitar player. For more info:
