LA LONJA

LA LONJA The United Nations agency UNESCO has designated 851 sites around the world as World Heritage sites, which form part of the “cultural and natural heritage of the world” and are considered as having unique and universal value to the history of humanity. One of those sites is in Valencia and, you may be surprised to learn, it’s not Levante’s Ciudad de Valencia Stadium. While the Miguelete is a century older and the Albufera is more naturally beautiful, La Lonja in Plaza Mercado outshines them all. Unlike any other city in the world, the outstanding Gothic building in Valencia is not its cathedral but a non-religious civic monument to commerce. Before it was built in the late 15h century, all major buildings and institutions in the city were owned and run by the church. Breaking with this tradition, La Lonja was a physical representation of a shift in power during Valencia’s Golden Age from the cardinals to the carpet traders, the bishops to the bankers. Here was a monumental building not built to the glory of God, but to the power of the Valencian economy as a trader in the

Mediterranean market. Anyone who’s had their bathroom refitted in Valencia will know how things work round here. After endless negotiations the builders finally arrive, they make a superficial start to proceedings and destroy your old bathroom and then you don’t see them again for weeks. They then come and do most of the work but never quite finish. There’s always a tap or a tile missing or the door doesn’t quite fit. This is a longheld and respected Valencian tradition (see what happened with the Grand Prix here) and the building of La Lonja was no different. The first stone was laid in November 1482 but work didn’t really start until a year later. Once they got going, it was more or less built in 15 years (pretty good going for the 15th century) although it took another 50 years before it was completely finished. You can read all this on an inscription above the back doorway in Plaza Doctor Collado, giving exact details about the different stages of the building’s construction. Although not a religious building, La Lonja certainly has sacred pretensions as a ‘temple’ of commerce with many

spiritual and biblical symbols on show. There are religious icons and gargoyles all around its façade. If you’re into this sort of thing, look out for the little man having a dump above one of the basement floor windows. The design of the building followed an initiatic code, a sort of medieval Feng Shui, where everything, down to the exact number of columns and the distance between them, was all calculated to give the maximum spiritual harmony to the merchants working there. There are three parts to the building. The largest part is the Sala de Contratación, or the trading floor, with its 24 columns twisting up 17 metres, until they open up like palm trees on the ceiling which was painted blue and decorated with stars to imitate the Valencia night sky. Back in Valencia’s Golden Age this was a bustling hive of activity, its modern equivalent would be the great stock markets of today. When the city granted merchants official status as ‘Mercaders de La Lonja’, they were given a table to deal from and a red velvet cloth with which to cover it. Along with the buying and selling of exotic products from all over the known world, mortgages and loans were also arranged here. Officially,

Christians were not allowed to charge interest, hence the importance of Jews as money lenders, but the merchants of the time soon found ways around this. Running along the walls of the room is an inscription reminding the merchants where they were and calling them to honour their surroundings and to trade honestly and fairly. Those failing to do this (well, those who fell afoul of the city leaders anyway) were sent to the dark cellars of the Tower, which rises up through the roof of the building. The merchants were given six months to settle their debts or pay back what they had been judged to have cheated (not that easy when you’re trapped in a rat-infested dungeon). If they did not comply they were taken to the chapel at the top of the Tower. On their way up, they probably, given the circumstances, neglected to admire the unique stone staircase ingeniously built without a central column. After making their peace with their maker, they were taken to their own table on the trading floor and beheaded in front of their fellow merchants. The city then took back its cloth and gave the table to someone else. Now that’s what I’d call zero tolerance to white collar crime.

The Consulat del Mar or maritime consulate is accessed through the garden at the back of the building. This was luxury office space (the ceilings are decorated with gold leaf and fine wood carvings) for the trade delegations which were maintained by all the major trading cities of the Mediterranean in the 15th century, with representatives from as far afield as Damascus, Rome, Venice, Egypt, Beirut and many others. On the exterior wall is one of the mysteries of La Lonja. The wall is decorated with a series of 40 medals bearing men’s faces but historians can’t make up their minds who they are supposed to be. Are they Roman Emperors? Aragon kings? Leading merchants? Famous paella chefs? Ali Baba’s forty thieves? We’ll probably never know. After the discovery of America, Spain’s Mediterranean ports started gradually to decline as importance shifted to the Atlantic coast. Valencia’s Golden Age was coming to an end, as was the heyday of La Lonja. It remained an important part of the Valencian economy as the city’s silk exchange until the 19th century when oranges and rice replaced silk as the region’s

principal export. During the Civil War, La Lonja was briefly to recapture its former glories when it was used to house the Spanish parliament while Valencia was capital of the Republic. So, in the 21st century, what do you do with a wholly exceptional example of a secular building in late Gothic style, which dramatically illustrates the power and wealth of one of the great Mediterranean mercantile cities? Well, that’s a problem that successive governments in Valencia have consistently failed to find a solution to. It has been used for parties, royal weddings, as an exhibition centre and a museum. Since its designation as a World Heritage site, La Lonja has become a bit of a museum piece in itself and is considered to be too precious for such trivial uses. Even the annual exhibition of Fallas figures has been moved to a local shopping centre. While the Cathedral still serves the purpose for which it was built and the Mercado Central across the road bristles with the very lifeblood of the city, La Lonja stands dustily still and largely empty. MARA ARANDA As an active participant in the Sete Sóis Sete Luas Festival, Valencia musician Mara Aranda has taken part in international projects with Luigi Cinque, for his record ‘Alentejo Story Concert’ (2005) inspired by José Saramago’s novel, “Levantado do Chão” along with Elena Ledda. Following this, she teamed up with the Algerian singer and composer Akim El Sikameya to record a DVD and go on an international tour. For his Med’Set Orkestra, El Sikameya had put together musicians from across the Mediterranean: from Andalusia and Valencia, Tuscany and Sicily, Portugal and Greece. Then in 2012 she took part in the Sete Luas Orchestra with Mario Incudine as a director, touring Europe and spreading her key message: coexistence and the fusion of Mediterranean cultures. She has worked with such Spanish artists as David Cervera and Miquel Gil from Valencia. She worked together with David Cervera on his album ‘Talaud’ in 2004. This was a fusion of traditional Mediterranean culture and classical music with avant-garde elements. She was the key participant with Miquel Gil on his album ‘Organic’. Motivated by her desire to study and research traditional music, she

travelled and lived in Crete during 2003 and 2004. There she met Ross Daly and learnt about his musical and educational project Labyrinth. She also attended a seminar on Bulgarian music and voice given by Tzvetanka Varimezova, Director of the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra. In 2005, she returned to Thessaloniki, Greece where she studied folklore, traditional vocals and music in depth. She got to grips with religious Byzantine chant at the En Chordais academy with Drossos Koutsokostas. It was also in Thessaloniki – the Jerusalem of the Balkans for the Sephardim – where she began to complete her repertoire by exploring more the Western perspective due to her proximity to mainland Spain. She made contact there with Nikos TzannisGinnerup, who received the legacy of the Sephardic musical tradition from David Saltiel. The result was the album ‘Jewish-Spanish Songs of Thessaloniki’ (Oriental Music, Germany, 1997). Mara Aranda’s research is reflected and compiled on the ‘Musiques i Cants Sefardis d’Orient i Occident’ (‘Sephardic Music and Song from East and West’) album with Amán Amán released on Galileo. The fact that she moved away from her own roots in a geographical sense made her look back at them with a renewed interest. She started to come

to grips with traditional song from Valencia – cant d’estil – through the singer-songwriter Josep Aparicio ‘Apa’ and went on to perform on soundtracks for different television series. In 1998 she put together the L’Ham de Foc group along with Éfren López; a project with Greek, Turkish, Balkan, Arab, Iranian, and Afghan influences, but a strong Valencian identity. L’Ham de Foc went on to become one of the most internationally acclaimed Spanish groups at the time, bringing together a broad fan base from across the musical spectrum who were enthusiastic and loyal to a musical and artistic style that was different, authentic, adventurous, open and far removed from folk, rock and pop conventions. It developed into a unique musical concept without trying to follow other trends. Their compositions grabbed the attention of artists and public alike on three critically albums recorded between 1999 and 2006: ‘U’, ‘Cançó de Dona i Home’ and ‘Cor de Porc’. For two years on Channel 9 RadioSi Radio in Valencia, she produced, directed and presented the programme Microkosmos dedicated to early and traditional music. She was prominently featured in the prestigious Pyrene production company’s documentary programme ‘Vinoleum’ dedicated to the Caroig

In 2007, she embarked on a fascinating project with the German group Estampie, led by Michael Popp, which revolutionised the interpretation of early music in central Europe. The formation was christened Al Andaluz Project and combined the powers of its three female vocalists – Sigrid Hausen, lead singer of Estampie and Qntal, Iman Kandoussi and Mara Aranda – representing the different musical heritages of the three cultures in Spain.

Mara has worked with great dedication and commitment with such early music groups as the Speculum Ensemble, directed by Ernesto Schmied, the Ensemble Oni Wytars directed by Michael Posch, and the Ensemble Unicorn directed by Marco Ambrosini. Her work with the Capella de Ministrers was particularly noteworthy in assembling such works as ‘Els Viatges de Tirant lo Blanch’, ‘The Cycle of Life’ and ‘Locked Music: Sefarad’, based on compositions transmitted by oral tradition through the centuries in Turkey, Bulgaria, Morocco and Greece. In 2013 the much- anticipated ‘Sephardic Legacy’ album was released, a celebration of the music and song of the Sephardic Jews in the Eastern and Western Mediterranean. She worked with the group Solatge on a repertoire of traditional music from the historical territories of Aragon. Their ‘Dèria’ album won several

Patio de Pepa’, which serves tapas and

pinchos with your wine, beer and spirits. This is Mediterranean food with Latin touches.

It is set in a 19th century building and the interior is nicely spruced up, whilst

still retaining its character. Check out

the attractive ceramic tiles that cover the bar as well as the distressed brickwork and wooden floor. There is also a view by

Bárbara Amorós was a competition winner on the TV programme ‘Top Chef’. All of their produce is fresh from the nearby Mercado Central. At ‘La Pepa’ they like to provide you with “a perfect combination” of tapas or pinchos with your wine and beer or premium gin & tonics.

Their tasty tablas include cheese and ham choices. You can enjoy artistically presented pinchos with prawns, vegetables, chicken and ham options. The bar’s tostas include sardine, ham & tumaca and the Valencian speciality of ‘esgarraett’, which are red peppers with cod. Their tapas ‘raciones’ include anchovies, croquetas and grilled octopus. Their selection of dishes with fried eggs is wide and includes meat, vegetable and fish choices.

On the sultry night we went along, we had fun chatting to the amiable staff at the bar and picking and choosing from the octopus tapas served on wood platters and the chicken pinchos on offer. We also experienced their distinctive ‘cazón’ which is the Andalusian speciality of shark. Top marks for their crunchy croquetas with cheese and almonds! Throughout the evening, we savoured the quality and presentation of the dishes. This included the filling, fried egg vegetable dish being served in a sweet little casserole dish. We unwound with two gin & tonics, one a citric fruit

gin with Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic water. The Cubans on the staff include a former cocktail manager from Havana

Surprisingly, salmorejo isn’t featured often on Spanish menus, but it’s quick and easy to make. It is part of Spain’s rich heritage of cooling recipes, using the second most symbolic fruit of Valencia, the tomato. The Spanish adopted the original ‘tomatl’ (charmingly, and perhaps appropriately post-summer, meaning ‘fat thing’) from the Aztec people in central Mexico and later introduced a larger red version ‘jitomate’ throughout their colonies, gradually incorporating it into their own diet. It became known as ‘tomate’ in Spanish and tomato in English. Although as the Gershwin brothers noted in their 1937 song, some say ‘tomato’ and some say ‘tomahto’! The Valencia tomato is far from the insipid, sun-deprived tomato we get in cooler climes. It is a fruit that abounds in Spain from May to August, but is generally available all the year round. Varieties range from black, yellow,

SALMOREJO CORDOBÉS Ingredients

• 1 kg tomatoes • 200 gm bread (the inner part of a day-old baguette) • 1 teaspoon sherry vinegar • 150 gm good quality extra virgin olive oil • 1 clove garlic • Pinch of sea salt • 2 boiled eggs • Strips of jamón serrano to cover

tomatoes in a liquidizer until smooth. Cut the bread into small pieces and leave to soak in the tomatoes. Peel a clove of garlic. Discard the inner core to avoid the raw garlic repeating. Blend with the tomatoes, slowly adding the extra virgin olive oil. The blend should and green to the more traditional red, and if you are ever here in May/June, you should not miss the gastronomic delight of ‘El Perelló’, a green, fat, veined tomato that bursts with flavour. As a member of the nightshade family, the tomato was originally considered to be poisonous. However, today it is considered the backbone to the well-publicized health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet, known for its antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. Additionally it is now believed tomatoes have a very important role to play in bone health, making them a good choice particularly for menopausal women. As well as other vitamins and minerals, they also have high potassium content, helping with muscular aches and pains and mineral loss which can be brought on in these humid times. This recipe originated in Andalusia, although surprisingly it did not incorporate the tomato until a later date. Now the recipe is made up of mainly tomatoes and particularly mature, juicy tomates, of which there should be plenty around this time of year (if any have escaped the Tomatino Festival in Buñol). It is generally served with the optional addition of a chopped boiled egg and jamón serrano. Preparation To prepare the tomatoes, first make a small cross in the skin. Cover with boiling water, drain and follow with

VOLARE It was a hot and sultry evening. It had been one of those days when the heat

and humidity combine to make you just want to do nothing, but we had a dinner

date at this month’s restaurant. So we dragged ourselves from the relative cool of our flat to the Barrio del Carmen

and Volare, a relatively new restaurant in C/ Roteros, close to the Torres de Serranos.

The welcome from Raquel, the coowner and front-of-house manager couldn’t have been warmer. She offered

us the coolest table in the house and told us that she and her sister Karina

(the chef) had decided we should try

as many of their signature dishes as

possible, so they would be bringing

mussels – perfectly steamed in white

(11€). Four plump and flavourful ravioli which rounded off a delightful meal interspersed with great conversation with Raquel and Karina, who would pop out from the kitchen from time to time to chat.

As they rightly say, the Mediterranean is not just Spain, Italy and Greece but also takes in the Middle East and Turkey, too. All have wonderful cuisine and they want to offer that on your plate in their restaurant.

Our dessert – though we hardly had room by this point – was pastry stuffed with cream, ricotta and chocolate chips and a chocolate and dulce de leche cake. It was surprisingly light and sweet.

Raquel and her sister Karina are so friendly and welcoming and the food so high quality that I strongly recommend a visit.

Our meal consisted of half dishes for the purpose of this review but the prices quoted are for the full portions, which is excellent value, and the price/quality is brilliant. The sisters, who are Uruguayans of Armenian descent, have set up this restaurant to serve Mediterranean food.

I have lived my whole life in the U.K but spent three years studying at the Overseas School in Sri Lanka in my early teens. After returning to the UK, I studied cooking and hotel management. Having a Chef’s qualification enabled me to travel and cook in countries like Australia where the food industry was beginning to boom. On my return to the UK, eating out had become very trendy. I left Sri Lanka to follow my dream to open up a Sri Lankan restaurant in Valencia so, in June 2016, ‘Barceilan’ was born. It takes its name from the original name given to Sri Lanka by the Portuguese settlers. We aim to be unique and create a choice that is different. Our Spanish guests love our coconut-based curries and so does

curries to fish ‘n’ chips to satay dishes and tapas. My travels have given me

the opportunity to build menus with ingredients that are healthy and well-

priced. I also have to mention our very hippy music in Barceilan, a definite crowd pleaser.

What are your plans for the future?

My future plan is to build five restaurants.

We also aim to work with various charity organisations via Barceilan by donating

1€ from every bill on themed nights.

VALENCIA CF… STILL A SELLING CLUB Around Christmas time in 2015 the owner of Valencia Football Club Peter Lim gave an interview with the Singapore online journal ‘The New Paper’ and was attributed with the following statement.... “I think the key is sustainability, it is not spending a lot of money one year and the next having to sell our players to support the financial part of the company”. Since then, Valencia CF have clearly contradicted that quote and done the opposite, leaving fans frustrated and bewildered. Football gurus throughout Europe have been hyper-critical of the running of the club. Looking highly likely to fall foul of the UEFA financial fair play directives, the club have had a very difficult summer in the transfer market that has led to three of their marquee players leaving and a mad dash close to the transfer deadline to get replacements in. The sales of André Gomes and Shkodran Mustafi to Barcelona and Arsenal, respectively, were always likely after Valencia failed to bring European football back to Mestalla for the 201617 season, but the exit of local boy Paco Alcácer was particularly hard to stomach. Alcácer, who was born in Torrent, had been at the club 11 years and was a product of the youth academy. At the club’s pre-season presentation game

in mid-August against Fiorentina of Italy, the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Alcácer’s entrance and his introduction to the crowd. Rumours of Barca’s interest were beginning to swell but few Valencia fans were worried because “Paquito” was one of their own and Lim’s sidekick, President Lay Hoon Chan, had publicly declared he was not for sale. With the transfer deadline looming ever closer, the bombshell was dropped that Alcácer had asked to leave. The romanticism of the next legend to follow in Antonio Puchades’ footsteps in turning down Barcelona to stay with his beloved Los Chés was lost in that moment. Paco would no longer be to Valencia what Totti is to Roma or Steve Bull is to fans of Wolves. The owners reluctantly agreed to Alcácer’s exit and the transfer was quickly completed. On the plus side, Valencia’s worries of a financial fair play infringement were quickly extinguished with these three sales, which put well over 100 million euros into the club’s bank account. Other notable departures during the summer were Javi Fuego and Pablo Piatti heading to Espanyol (the latter on loan) and Rodrigo de Paul moved to Udinese in Italy for a fee in the region of three million euros. Another player, Lucas Orbán, also went to Italy. The Argentinian left back will be turning out for Genoa this year, after leaving on a free transfer. Three of last season’s squad will now be gracing the Premiership. Sofiane Feghouli got his wish with a free transfer to West Ham and Middlesbrough have bought Antonio Barragán for a small fee (2.5 million euros) as well as being loaned Álvaro Negredo for the season. Goalkeeper Yoel Rodríguez has been loaned out to Eibar, whilst Robert Ibáñez and Rúben Vezo have also headed out on temporary deals, to Leganés and Granada respectively.

Finally, Danilo Barbosa returned to Braga in Portugal, after his season-long loan expired, and Denis Cheryshev opted for Villarreal rather than Los Chés after deciding to leave Real Madrid. In return, seven new faces have arrived at the Mestalla and Fede has also returned after completing his loan spell at Deportivo La Coruña. Again, either youth or a relationship with superagent Jorge Mendes seemed to be major factors in securing the club’s new additions. The European Championship winner Nani joined from Fenerbahce in Istanbul and the promising youngster Álvaro Medrán came from Real Madrid for 1.5 million euros. Martín Montoya arrived on a free transfer from Barcelona and his ex-teammate Munir El Haddadi then soon followed, on loan for the season. Former Atlético Madrid star Mario Suárez signed on loan from Watford, presumably to fill the shoes of Javi Fuego, and then Manchester City star Eliaquim Mangala also joined for at least a season. The French international had cost the English side 42 million pounds when he signed from FC Porto in 2014! Probably the most interesting signing was the Argentine-born defender Ezequiel Garay from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg. Los Chés have been chasing the former Real Madrid star for a while now and they finally got their man for around 20 million euros. Valencia fans will be hoping that Garay and Mangala can form the kind of defensive partnership that Mustafi and Otamendi grafted together a couple of seasons ago, when they finished in a Champions League berth under the leadership of Nuno Espírito Santo. A Europa League spot seems to be a realistic goal this season but, after two games, the club are without a point and planted at the bottom of La Liga. The home defeat to Las Palmas was probably the shock result of the opening

STILL SUMMER The way I see it, there are two ‘New Years’ in 2016. January, the big one, where you set a list of self-improvements which you promise to your friends and yourself that you will abide by and reach in a short time. It’s a doddle, right? Well no, because by summer time, you realize you’re still doing the same things, still drinking the same amount, still not setting foot in the gym. But not to worry! Because after summer, it’s definitely going to stop, it’s out of your system and you can start the new New Year now. Less going out, more sleep, more exercise… Yeah, right! Anyway, back to being realistic: here’s a list of events, clubs, and venues you are going to have a great time at, from pool parties to kebabs in cabs! For those of you out there who are still in denial about summer ending and still want to listen to music by a pool (why wouldn’t you?), you’re in luck. Wow Pool Party (Carretera Sequia del Rei, Gandia) is back! And their tagline is “What happens in WOW, stays in WOW”…I’m pretty sure they’re referring to their event and not the RPG with goblins and elves. So yeah, all jokes aside, this really is a blast. It has a massive pool, with sunbeds, stands, cocktail bars and DJs. Just imagine Butlins, but warmer, funnier, cooler… OK, maybe don’t imagine Butlins! This year they’re in Gandia, so if you want to attend, there are special buses for you departing from the city of Valencia. Party on 17 September.

If you’re new in town, check it out, takes some pics and show your friends back in sunny England what they’re missing. L’Umbracle (Av. Profesor López Piñero) has some fun events coming up, like the Erasmus Welcome Party on 16 September, free entrance till 02.00h. Great layout, beautiful people, buzzing atmosphere, palm trees… Just go. It has a great view of the City of Arts and Sciences.

From then on, the everyday, standard clubs will be hosting their standard night, with a couple of exceptions and special guests here and there. For this reason I will now list them.

Now I don’t know if you remember Palo Market in the Viveros Park back in the spring of this year, with the food stalls of all the best bars and restaurants and many stages with all types of live music being played…no? Well, it was awesome. Lucky you though, a similar event will take place there (the most beautiful park in VLC) organised and hosted by The Basement. This is a new concept for them, and it’s called ‘A Day in the Park’. They basically want to emulate the Palo Market event, so while you’re dancing to one of the many styles on offer, you will also be stuffing your face at one of the many food trucks. If you want a nice day out in the park which doesn’t consist of walking the dog, playing frisbee or stalking your ex, then be there on 24 September.

This next one is a bit outside of Valencia

this might be the more authentic Erasmus night, seeing as it’s smack bang in the university neighbourhood.

Even more curious and ironic is how the patriotic Brexit campaign used the “Independence Day” rallying call to such great effect and applause, since it echoes one of the darkest days in British history, marking the breakup of another union with dire, lasting results for British economic and political power on the world stage. Of course, as most independent movements have found throughout history, the fight for independence never actually ends; it just gets smaller and more extreme (decades later, the Confederate states sought their own independence in another bloodier war). Yet more curious is how independence

seekers the world over only seem to want themselves to be independent from those around them, not vice versa. The cries from Brits wanting to ‘escape’ from the geographical reality of Europe were not used by the same people during the Scottish independence referendum: “We don’t want to be ruled from Brussels (but we want Scotland to be ruled from London).” The Confederates yearning to break free from the yoke of the Union certainly didn’t want the same independence for their slaves. Whether it’s neighbours playing loud music all night in your block or corporate oligopolies lobbying for ‘free’ trade agreements to axe a country’s environmental aid by claiming unfair competition, those who seek freedom and independence only seem to want to apply such concepts to their own freedom and independence regardless of the damage it does to everyone else on their block, country, continent or planet. Independence is rarely for the ‘others’ they happen to

share this world with (and on whom they do actually depend for so many things). I don’t remember who it was that said, “Patriotism teaches us to believe a false history and to hate people we’ve never met”, but this has certainly become apparent in the aftermath of the Brexit campaign. I also remember a Buddhist monk who once said, “If I say I’m the best, everyone will call me an idiot; but if I say we’re the best, they’ll vote for me.” This has been seen again with so many quotes from Churchill (from people who act more like Neville Chamberlain, pretending that events ‘on the continent’ won’t affect Britain). Some Brits pin imaginary medals on themselves, saying “We won the war”, referring to a war that happened generations before they were born (not to mention the fact that it was won by the Red Army and the U.S. Navy with a couple of atom bombs, a portent of times to come, but that’s another story…), or even “We were

last invaded in 1066”, referring to a time and place that has nothing to do with them, the society they live in, nor very probably their own genes. But this false first person plural is used in all countries, and not just referring to a mythical, irrelevant past. It can even be seen in the two international football tournaments played early this summer, with millions following ‘our’ team as they watched eleven tax-dodging young millionaires who mostly work in foreign countries play another eleven lads with a different coloured shirt. And if ‘our’ team wins, this is somehow ‘our’ victory as we sit thousands of miles away on the armchair with a beer. And perhaps the greatest irony is how people say they want to be “independent” along with millions of other people. This reminds me of that scene from ‘The Life of Brian’ where an entire crowd shouts “We’re all individual!” But this desire to at least appear individual drives the masses to vote for mavericks, to join groups and post opinions on the Internet about everything from medicine to philosophy and above all to put down the true experts as uncool nerds (as Gove and Trump have successfully done). With such ease to publish opinions to the world today, people now seem more concerned about having the right to an opinion than about having the right opinion. Indeed, we have a democratic right to be wrong, to say 2+2=3, but seriously, why bother? I wonder if

historians in future centuries after the Second Dark Ages and environmental meltdown will look on this mass adulation of ignorance and point to the likes of those working class heroes Donald, Boris and their voters as we now point to the likes of Nero and panem et circenses? Indeed, ignoring the facts to follow our basic, sometimes hateful, instincts is nothing new. It took the world centuries to fully accept that we live on a spherical planet orbiting the sun, despite all the evidence from the experts against spiritual leaders’ humbug as they continued to burn heretics. But this human failing is particularly worrying if one considers that democracy is a system whereby everybody gets the right to decide upon things they mostly know little about, giving their opinion about important, complex policies that will affect their future (notice that I say “opinion”, not “knowledge”). The kind of atmosphere we’ve just seen created in the UK (political assassination included) has throughout history led to savage dictatorships of the kind the British seem to think they are immune, possibly due to being so often on the winning side of wars and thus writing history themselves. Yet another great irony is seen when the patriots say they are so different from other countries. In the various lands and countries where I’ve lived, I’ve seen patriotism under different

flags and believe me: IT’S ALWAYS THE SAME. I’ve seen independence and patriotic movements in different lands and it is rarely about ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ but often rather more about selfish instincts of ‘Us and Them’ and superiority complexes. It’s about being independent from others instead of trying to understand, respect or even help them. The Good Samaritan (foreigner) today would rather not get involved unless the guy bleeding on the ground has the right papers and medical insurance. Of course, those who have never lived in a different culture find it almost impossible to put themselves in the immigrant’s shoes (and by ‘immigrant’ I don’t mean British expats in Spain who don’t speak the lingo and complained during the Brexit campaign about “too many immigrants”…). At the end of the day, if you truly want to be independent, stop saying “we” when you talk about millions of other people who happen to live in your geographic zone of birth; start thinking about “I” and if you’re the kind of person you wish to be. Take a look in the mirror: Do you see an independent person or a patriotic sheep? I’ve done that and have decided to get a new passport and nationality (from British to Spanish), though to me these are simply bits of paper that I will now need for practical reasons thanks to the decision taken by those on the island where I was born. People sometimes ask me if I feel more British or Spanish. Well, to me a nationality is not a feeling but an abstract concept, too often used to pit people against each other. Real feelings are things like hunger, cold, fear, sadness and apprehension that people sense when they have to flee a war zone and go to another country, for example. CHRIS WRIGHT Tell us about something about your background and experiences. As a child, my father being a police constable, attempted to keep me on a tight rein so I was rather limited in my employment choices. Apart from the usual paper rounds and grocery boy delivering, I managed to earn a few free drinks playing piano in the pubs. My first real employment after leaving school was working as a window dresser at one of Leicester’s main stores, long since gone. In the evenings I used to earn a few shillings and free drinks. Next, National Service ensured steady employment for three years in the Royal Air Force as a military policeman. I was fondly called “Snowdrops” due to the white covered caps we wore. After being discharged, I became a policeman in Exeter Devon. This lasted only a short time as I could see little future there. Either I would have to go or they would close the police force for the city. Not much of a choice. Being offered work as a trainee manager with the now defunct British

Home Stores, I thought I had found something of real interest until a friend told me about pharmaceutical representation. I joined the John Wyeth pharmaceutical company based in Philadelphia, U.S.A. My salary doubled and I had a car and expenses. Magic! After being reasonably successful with Wyeth, I was offered a contract with Merck, Sharp & Dohme, based in New Jersey. Even better!

Music, at that time, represented a big interest in my life. There was the arrival of the big bands from America like Stan Kenton and Count Basie and we had our own Ted Heath and Vic Lewis. The ‘trad’ side was hopping with Humphrey Lyttleton and Chris Barber. At 100 Oxford Street in London on Sunday afternoons there was Cy Laurie and I sat in on many of the jam sessions there.

Then I blew it. I fell into the trap of taking a pub in Northamptonshire, England. This ‘pie-in-the- sky’ dream came to an end with the help of a delinquent goat, a couple of donkeys, an oversexed cockerel and a depressed Basset hound. After only eighteen months, I accepted the offer of my Spanish friend and moved to Spain. The country has now given me the finest opportunity that I ever thought possible. I have been married three times and I have a son in England and a daughter who grew up in Valencia.

It was in fifties that I was conscripted into the Royal Air Force and had the luck not only to be stationed near London but on an American base near Bedford. It was there that I was fortunately around when the pop music scene exploded with Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel” and soon after “Hound Dog”.

I originate from the heart of England, the city of Leicester. I was born before the Second World War started. For youth culture, everything really started ‘happening’ in the 1950s. It was the time of the fashionable ‘Edwardian’ or Teddy boy era when most of the guys wore fingertip-length jackets with velvet collars together with what were known as drainpipe trousers. Nowadays they would be sold under the posh label of Slim Fit. Finally the footwear had to be ‘winkle pickers’. That is shoes with pointed tips, the name being derived from the pins that were used for the removal of the winkle from the shellfish. Most of my spare time was given to playing boogie woogie piano in the less desirable pubs in the city. At that time there was still a strong contingent of American and Canadian forces stationed in the area and most nights saw a fair amount of brawling between the servicemen, whilst I was encouraged to play louder.

After my three years in the R.A.F., I was discharged and found it difficult to settle down. I was still crazy about music and at that time another type of attraction came on the scene, ‘skiffle’. It was composed mainly of American folk blues numbers and the star at that time was Lonnie Donegan with songs like “Worried Man Blues”, “Long Lost John”, “John Henry”, etc. Apart from the guitars, most of the instruments were homemade so everybody was at it. Naturally, I had a group and we were fairly successful. Also, around that time along came Bill Haley who some might claim to be one of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll. The ‘Blackboard Jungle’ film made such a stir at the cinemas where it was shown that police had to be on hand to stop people rocking in the aisles. Then, without doubt, the most successful decade for musical influence arrived; the swinging ‘60s! Wow! What a time! Magic moments with the Beatles and Rolling Stones. It was ‘flower power’ and protest marches. I was living and working around London and it was all happening and I was proud to be a part of it. How does Spain compare to England in terms of working and quality of life?

CHRIS WRIGHT It was in the late 1950s that I started coming to Spain on holiday. At that time, the country was an enigmatic place and controlled by a dictator. I arrived like many others on the Costa Brava, Tossa de Mar to be exact, and the only sign of a dictatorship was occasionally being stopped by the Guardia Civil, who were only really looking for a handout of a few English cigarettes. It was an inexpensive place to relish the things you could only buy with a good deal more money at home. I fell in love, not only with the country but with a gypsy flamenco dancer, ‘La Sigla’, who danced at the La Rueda club. If anyone knows of Siggy’s whereabouts now I would be grateful for that information. So… back in England things were their usual dreary self and the weather, naturally, remained uncompromising. Could you describe the books you have written related to the Valencia region?

My decision to return to Spain began at the beginning of the 1970s and, as I had met a delightful Spanish couple, I thought there would be no problem with residence papers and work permits. Apart from the time factor, there was no big deal in obtaining them. I opened what was probably one of the first pubs in Spain. This was in Cullera and through the pub and excursions I met so many interesting people from all walks of life, including Japanese, Russians, American, Australians, Germans and many more. Later, I was to write a book called “The Spanish Cheese ‘Sandwish’ Without Bread” (published by Amazon). This title was derived from an actual occasion when I was asked if I wanted a cheese “sandwish” with or without bread. An entertaining episode and only one of many more in that particular book. Being attracted to what might be termed as out-of-the-way places, I began exploring the least populated region in western Europe, the Maestrazgo region of Teruel, an area of 1.250 square

kilometres with a population of 3,700 people. My book is called “The Last Spanish Secret” (Publishers Amazon) and is a must for people like myself who love returning to villages and places that are the same as they were 100 years ago. Magnificent mountains, rivers and valleys with an abundance of wildlife together with a warm welcome for the stranger that really makes it something extra special.

And, of course, not forgetting live music venues like Black Note, Radio City and Jimmy Glass.
