ROMAN VALENCIA

ROMAN VALENCIA

THE CITY UNDERGROUND It was the Romans who started it all. Before them Valencia was just a swampy island on the Turia River. The early history of the city was always pretty sketchy but the excavation of the Almoina site behind the Basílica in the Plaza de la Virgen in 1985 changed all this, giving us information about the city’s beginnings and painting a clearer picture of Roman Valencia. The city was founded in the year 138 B.C. as a kind of retirement home for old soldiers. Victorious Roman Consul Décimo Junio Bruto Galaico, who is to be played by the multiple Goyawinning actor Luis Tosar in the soon-tobe-released film ‘Galaicus’, wanted to reward the veterans from his successful campaigns in Lusitania (western Spain and northern Portugal). He founded Valentia Edetanorum, “the city of the

valiant”, and gave each of them a plot of land on an island in the Turia River (or Tyris as it was known to the local Iberians). To get a picture of how the land lay on the site of the city 2,000 years ago, what is now the city centre was surrounded by the river, which followed the course of today’s riverbed park on one side. On the other, a second branch of the Turia forked off at more or less the modern site of the Puente de las Artes, flowing through C/ Bolsería and the Plaza del Mercado Central, where it formed a small lake, through the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and down C/ Barcas and C/ Pintor Sorolla towards Plaza Tetuán and the Glorieta, where it re-joined the main river at what is now the Puente del Real. Unlike its more established neighbours Sagunto, Llíria or Xàtiva, which had been around for centuries, Valencia was a purely Roman construction on what had previously been agricultural land. This fell in with Roman policy of making a clean break with the Iberians,

Greeks and Phoenicians who had founded and controlled the other cities and Valencia, the true Roman city, was given increasing importance in the region at the expense of its neighbours. But just when things were going so well, death, disaster and destruction were just around the corner. Not for the last time in its history, the city of Valencia backed the losing Republic side in a civil war and suffered the reprisals. In the first century A.D., General Quintus Sertorius stood against the new regime in Rome and attempted to set up an independent Roman republic in Hispania. The city of Valencia was amongst those who supported him but, after his assassination, his forces were crushed by Pompey. Pompey’s revenge was brutal. In 75 A.D., the city of Valencia was destroyed by Pompey’s forces. The Almoina excavation in the 1980s uncovered weapons used in the battle in which thousands died and 14 skeletons were found showing symptoms of horrible torture, some with limbs amputated and others that had been impaled alive. These were

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

THE CITY UNDERGROUND

prisoners who had been publically executed in order to terrorise what was left of the population and to stand as an example to other cities. The city lay abandoned for more than 50 years but with the power of the Caesars restored, Emperor Augustus rebuilt the city in around 20 B.C., increasing its size and importance, establishing the first great city of Valencia. A grand forum was built under what is now the Basílica and a huge circus, the size of three football pitches and with a capacity for more than 10,000 people, was erected stretching down from where the Comisiones Obreros building stands today in Plaza de Nápoles y Sicilia, crossing C/ de la Paz all the way to the Plaza del Patriarca. The city prospered and became the most important Roman metropolis in the region. Roman Valencia was a walled city with four gates at the cardinal points and a bridge where the Puente de la Trinidad (the one that goes across to C/ Alboraya) stands today. One gate in the Plaza de la Reina (more or less

directly under Finnegans), one in C/ Salvador (remains of which will soon be on display in a basement next to the church) another in C/ Caballeros and a fourth in C/ Avellanas (remains of which can be seen at number 14, through a specially built window at street level). Despite its ancient grandeur, not much was known for certain about Roman Valencia until the 1980s when work started on the Almoina dig right in the heart of the city behind the Cathedral. This unlocked many of the secrets of Valentia including the destruction by Pompey and its subsequent rebuilding. You can visit the site of the excavation at the Almoina Archaeological Museum in Plaza Décimo Junio Bruto (from the Plaza de la Virgen, just go under the arch between the Cathedral and the Basílica). It’s like travelling back in time as you go down the steps under the square. You can walk along the Roman streets towards what was the Roman Forum where you can see remains of its columns, porticoes and capitals. There are parts of a temple and grain store and there are even remains of

the cold and hot water baths and the changing rooms, which date back to the original Republican Valentia and were constructed as far back as 120 B.C. If you are looking for other evidence of the Romans around the city, some ancient Roman plaques dating from the first and second centuries B.C. have been used to decorate the Plaza de la Virgen façade of the Basílica (more or less at floor level). You can also see parts of the circus in the church of San Juan del Hospital and in the basement of the Caro Hotel at C/ del Almirante, 14. There are also numerous artefacts and ceramics in the various museums around Valencia, particularly in the Museo de la Ciudad and the Centro Cultural de la Beneficència. The ancient Roman city was of course rebuilt and built over again by the Goths, Visigoths, Muslims, Christians, Borgias, Carlists, Republicans, Francoists, Bautista Soler and Rita Barberá, but it was the Romans who founded Valencia and it was their name for it that stuck. VALENCIA MUSIC

SUSANNA GREGORIAN Tell us something about your background and musical experiences.

I was born into an Armenian family of musicians and scientists. As a child, I was always listening to music and singing even before I started speaking. I also wished to be a dancer but the magnificent sound of the violin won me over. Since my schooldays and then the Moscow conservatory I have played a lot of recitals and chamber music concerts. I was leading an orchestra as a concert master, chosen by world-renowned music professors. I’m eternally grateful to all of them! I have been fortunate enough to have played all over the world, from Sydney to Berlin and London to Rio. Aside from Armenia and Russia, I have also lived and worked in Germany and England, and now Spain. What is it that makes classical music so special?

I don’t know exactly but I guess it’s those special high vibrations and perfect harmonies like the music of Mozart, for example! Unfortunately, classical music has been getting less popular in recent

SUSANNA GREGORIAN

years. Modern pop music is dominating at the moment but I’m sure that all the great treasures created by classical composers will never be forgotten. It is our duty as artists to keep these great works alive! Who are your favourite composers and why?

It is difficult to say as there are so many of them. Mozart – pure, perfect harmony with a beauty that comes directly from heaven! People say that God was dictating melodies to the genius that was Mozart. Vivaldi – incredible energy and all kinds of images! I love to play Vivaldi any time. Beethoven! His music always sounds fresh even if it’s played 1,000 times... it has lots of strength and positivity! In reality, Beethoven was suffering for so much of his life. Tchaikovsky! Lots of passion… a Russian soul. Describe a typical day at the Palau de les Arts…

The day begins in the morning when, between 10.00h – 11.00h, we get together for the ensayo (rehearsal). We have a quick coffee break for 20 mins and catch up with colleagues. Sometimes we’re having a doublesession until the evening. In the case of longer breaks, there is always an opportunity to relax on terrazas outside

the Palau or practice in camerinos – special rooms. The days of the show are nice; after work the musicians go out for drinks & tapas. Do you have any concerts or operas that you would recommend for the 2016-2017 season?

Yes, we have all kinds of music this year: classical, baroque and modern music!!! There will be Verdi operas: ‘I Vespri Siciliani’ in November 2016 with our new music director Roberto Abbado and ‘La Traviata’ in February 2017. Also, you will find that all the baroque concerts are interesting, with rarely performed pieces composed by Vivaldi. How do you find Spain as a place to live compared to Russia?

Much more relaxed, more sunshine and, of course, the sea! But for intensive work, it’s a bit different. Probably in cold countries people have a faster rhythm that goes with the more urgent need to survive! I have also noticed similar hospitality and the warmth of the people, Españoles and Russo-Armenians! Do you have any plans for the future?

I prefer not to make big plans and also not to share them!...:) More information susannagregorian.de

EL CARMEN SPANISH SCHOOL obvious reasons like quality of life, the climate and gastronomy. You will find these qualities not just in Spain but also in all Spanish-speaking countries of the world. Without a doubt, this increases the interest of those who wish to speak Spanish. Experts say that it is one of the easiest languages to learn because of its structure and pronunciation. Nice one! It is also a very expressive and sentimental language. Now you know why the Spanish are able to speak so rapidly. That is why our teachers say that Spanish is so easy and so much fun! Tell us about a typical day at El Carmen Spanish School.

EL CARMEN SPANISH SCHOOL

Why is Spanish so important as a language in the 21st century?

That’s a difficult question! From a purely linguistic point of view, Spanish is an old language that, due to the influence of diverse cultures and artistic, social and political movements, has become one of the richest and most widely spoken languages in the world. We can confirm that it is the second most spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese. As you know, we don’t only speak Spanish in Spain but also the majority of Latin America and increasingly in other parts of Europe, the United States and Equatorial Guinea in Africa. Spanish is in fashion. But why? I would dare to add that it is because of our ample and varied culture, for our traditions, character and

Every day is different at our school. We learn every day with our students, our colleagues, friends and family. However, everything begins at 08.00h. The Persian shutters go up, the door opens, lights are switched on and off we go to work! Our teachers arrive every day with the same smile and happiness every morning. They turn on their computers, get their materials for the classes, ask for advice, make photocopies, and prepare classes and RING! Our first students arrive at 09.00h and class begins! From the reception area, you can hear laughter and more laughter but most off all you hear Spanish being spoken. “¿Qué tal el fin de semana?” That is the first question our teachers ask the students. It’s impossible not to speak Spanish! Grammar, vocabulary, “¿Cómo se dice en español…?” The class finishes and: “¡Mañana más, chicos!” In this way, our much-loved teachers direct their classes on every level making the students feel at home, part of the big family that we are. Night falls, the lights are switched off, the shutters go down and tomorrow is another day. Fortunately, we can say that at El Carmen Spanish School we have taught Spanish classes well with another day under our belt. What courses are available?

El Carmen Spanish School is a school that specializes in teaching Spanish as a foreign language where we tailor our classes so that each student feels catered for and can learn the language in a warm, relaxed and welcoming environment provided by our professional teachers. The courses that we offer at the school include group classes, one-to-one and private classes. Group classes: Our classes are reduced and we have different types of courses, extensive and intensive. The extensive is divided into 4 hours of classes a week (2 classes per week) or 6 hours (3 classes). This type of course is ideal for those students who live in Valencia and want to learn Spanish in a more relaxed manner. We also offer intensive courses that can be for 10 hours (5 classes) or 20 hours (10 classes) a week .These courses are designed for students who want to learn Spanish more quickly to find work or a partner! ;) One-to-one classes: In these classes we adapt completely to your needs and you learn Spanish at a pace that suits you. The teacher will help you to improve your Spanish rapidly and efficiently in a way that you need to become an expert in the language. Private group classes: Would you like to study with your partner, your friends or family? This is the best option. In these classes you can be with who you like to learn the language and with our teachers setting the pace that suits you in the same way as private classes. As well as this, we adapt our classes to your needs so that you feel that you are learning plenty of Spanish. All material is included for all of our courses and enrolment is free. You can also have a free first lesson! El Carmen Spanish School C/ Santo Tomás, 22 Tel: 96 391 45 18

SALMOREJO CORDOBÉS

VEGETABLE AND TARKA DAL By Helen Westwater

It’s never advisable to go trekking unprepared and certainly not in the Himalayas. Nevertheless; many moons ago, setting out from the hilltop station of Darjeeling, myself and two companions in inadequate clothing and flimsy footwear set out over the border to Nepal. After several days of trekking, we found ourselves deep in snow. Cold and desperately hungry, on a mountain top we came across a seemingly deserted government lodge hostel. By some miracle, out of the blue or in this case the snow, a 15-year-old boy appeared, made up the fire and proceeded to cook the most delicious vegetable dal (lentil stew). The memory of that dish, I still hold as the most welcome comfort food ever. It should have been no surprise, as the unpresuming lentil has been a stalwart of nutrition and saviour of the famished for centuries! In the Bible, the starving Esau, returning from hunting, sells his birthright to Jacob for a humble bowl of them. Since the 1st century, the Romans were very keen on them for keeping their army on the march. Luckily for me, in India, as Madhur Jaffrey, the famous Indian cookery writer says: “You can take meats and fish and vegetables from an Indian, but you cannot take away his dal – ‘the core of his meal’. With the change of the season it’s time to fight offset cooler evenings and autumn chills, so here’s my own version of warming, comforting Tarka Dal with vegetables and plenty of warming spices. Preparation First wash the lentils well until the water runs clear. Tip into a large pan with filled with water about 1 inch above the lentils (roughly 1.5L).

VEGETABLE AND TARKA DAL

Ingredients. Serves 6 • 250 gm / 9 oz mung bean/ skinned yellow split or other split lentils • 1 dessert spoon ground turmeric • 1 inch root ginger, peeled • 1 cinnamon stick • 4 cloves garlic, peeled • 1/2 onion, peeled • 2 carrots peeled and diced about half a thumb thick • 3 potatoes diced small, soaked in water and salt while the lentils are

Bring to the boil. As the lentils boil, scum rises to the surface, which you will need to remove with a slotted spoon. Add the turmeric, garlic, onion, cinnamon and ginger to the lentils and reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Salt slightly. Cover with the lid slightly ajar to let the steam escape and cook for about 60 minutes. Be very careful the lentils do not stick to the bottom of the pan so stir occasionally and add more water if necessary. You are looking for a creamy, delicate consistency. When the lentils are softish, remove the onion, lightly break up the lentils with a potato masher and add the carrots and potatoes. Continue cooking. About 10 minutes before serving add the broccoli. Meanwhile make the hot oil, known as tarka. Heat the olive oil and add the asafoetida, cumin and chillies. When

cooking • 1 head broccoli or cauliflower, divided into small heads or florets • • 2 tablespoon olive oil • 1/3 teaspoon asafoetida (optional but good) • ½ teaspoon whole cumin • 2 small dried chillies • 1 clove garlic, thinly sliced • Mustard seeds

the chillies start to darken, add the onion to brown. Add the mustard seeds which should start to pop. Finally add the garlic. Pour this mixture into the dal. Season with salt to finish and perhaps a touch of lemon. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve with flatbreads. On 22 October we’ll be celebrating our 6th year anniversary. Thanks for all your support. Come along to the party if you can!

TRADITIONAL PUB OF THE MONTH 1

FINNEGAN’S Finnegan’s of Dublin opened in October of 1995 and was the first Irish pub of the city. It is set in the beautiful Plaza de la Reina in the heart of the historic centre of the city. Finnegan’s is twinned with the famous Finnegan’s of the Dublin area, in the pretty city of Dalkey. In Valencia, Finnegan’s is the ideal place to have a mellow lunch for 8€ with friendly service or to share a few beers with your mates, enjoy a good match on the big screens or some live music at the weekend. This is a little piece of Ireland that has been very much part of Valencia nightlife for more than 20 years and has recently been reformed and renovated with more and more options to choose from. These choices include concerts, sports

events and the authentic atmosphere of an Irish pub. They have widened their ample carta with delicious homemade dishes that are ‘made in Ireland’ as well as fun entertainment including monologues, quiz and intercambio language evenings. They also have a private area known as the ‘Back Bar’ with a bar and space for 100 people to organize parties, private dinners, reunions and business events. For more information regarding prices, please contact Finnegan’s. They have free Wifi for all customers. Members of the 24/7 Valencia team have enjoyed endless afternoons and evenings at Finnegan’s over the years. Just last week, we popped in on a sunny Wednesday afternoon to chat with friendly and worldly owner Jorge and the experienced, informed head of staff, Paul from Ireland, who is a really good bloke.

With an ample terrace, we decided to try their 8€ lunch in the pleasant sunshine. We ordered homemade fries, which were crisp and tasty with no oil or extra fat. Our burger of the day was a memorable combination of bacon, beef and lettuce which we savoured with the palm trees and cathedral in view. It was served with sesame seed bread in an attractive newspaper-style wrapping, cradled in a little basket. Yes, you can read the newspaper stories, too! Our lunch came with a beer of Fosters and we happily whiled away la tarde, people watching and getting slowly tanned! Although not included on the menu, the very helpful and kindly staff suggested we try their ‘Guinness Cake’, which was a bizcocho cake with chocolate and some Guinness plus vanilla ice cream that made for a bittersweet postre to round off an enjoyable day out at sunny Finnegan’s…

they are from the land or sea. At the moment, it is a very active city with a lot of attractive choices and offers in the world of culture, sport and gastronomy.

INTERVIEW WITH OWNER RUFO Tell us something background.

about

Could you explain the concept of Santa Companya? your

Since I came to Valencia 15 years ago, I have dedicated myself to the world of cuisine in a variety of ways, via restaurants, catering and bars. I have seen how Valencia gastronomy has really developed first-hand, paying special attention to the world of wine. How do you find Valencia as a place to live?

Valencia is an ideal place for people who enjoy fine dining. The climate is perfect for chilling out on a terrace with a good wine and quality tapas, whether © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia

La Santa Companya is a wine & tapas bar which has been serving people for more than 15 years, where you can learn to compartir (share) with friends or as couples. Savour the atmosphere at the long bar or at tables with wines that we can recommend to accompany your homemade tapas in a hip yet warm environment.

well as our own individual tapas. We create our own desserts like Textura de chocolate or Falso tomate valenciano. What wines can we enjoy here?

Wines are the soul of La Santa Companya. We pay special attention to natural wines and small companies, including national and international

ones, without forgetting classic D.O.s like Rioja and Ribera del Duero. We try to represent the work of viticulturists from other regions of Spain.

Are there any tapas and desserts you would recommend?

If you come to visit us you can find typical tapas like Jamón Ibérico, Cecina de León (salted meat), tablas of cheese, Iberian sausages, and products from the huerta (countryside) of Valencia as

VALENCIA FOOTBALL DANI PAREJO

CESARE PRANDELLI AT MESTALLA

DIEGO ALVES

PATIENCE IS REQUIRED! Arsène Wenger celebrated twenty years in charge of Arsenal last month and during that time Valencia have had nineteen different managers take charge of a competitive game! The latest victim of impatience was Pako Ayestarán, who was relieved of his managerial duties on 20 September, just four league games into the domestic campaign. With Los Chés pointless from those four matches, it was inevitable that the likeable Basque would be one of the first casualties of the La Liga season. In all fairness, Valencia could have gained points from all of those matches with a little more luck, defensive prowess and tactical knowhow. The team is one of the youngest in the league and has a great deal of promise but strong leadership is required in order to plug up a leaky defence that frequently looks suspect and vulnerable, especially against pace. In the home games against Las Palmas on the opening day and Real Betis in match three, Valencia played well but were punished more than once in both

games on the counter-attack. The first away trip of the season at the cosy Estadio Ipurua in Eibar was also a chance missed to take all three points. Valencia missed a plethora of chances before Pedro León converted the rebound from a disputed penalty, initially saved by Matt Ryan, to inflict another defeat on the visitors. A second consecutive trip to the Basque country ended with another loss. Athletic Bilbao were the better side throughout but Valencia had their chances and started brightly with a goal from Álvaro Medrán in the second minute. However, not for the first time in recent years, the visitors could not deal with the power, skill and guile of Spanish international Aduriz. The former Valencia favourite powered home a header from a corner to put his side on level terms. The San Mamés crowd erupted again just before half time, when the same player took advantage of sloppy defensive play to cutely lob the ball over the advancing Diego Alves into an empty goal. The second period was a tame affair with both sides cancelling each other out in the middle of the park for the majority of the half. With no further

goals, it ensured Valencia had no points from four games and just two days later came the news of Pako’s departure. Salvador González ‘Voro’ was put in temporary charge whilst the search for a new leader began and, not for the first time, the Valencian native brought stability, calm, and more importantly, positive results to the club. ‘Voro’, who has now been the club’s interim coach on four different occasions, started his latest spell in charge with a victory at home to Alavés. The game was a mediocre affair but for the first time this season luck was with Los Chés. A swirling left-sided cross by Gayà was headed into his own goal by Víctor Laguardia, just before the half hour mark, to calm the nerves of the Valencia faithful. However, just before half time, Alavés levelled through former Bilbao star Gaizka Toquero. Valencia came out positively in the second half but could not find that all elusive goal. Medrán missed a good chance and Mangala hit a post as it looked like the former Valencia manager Mauricio Pellegrino would be denying the side he coached in 2012 their first victory of the season.

ARTICLE BY JOHN HOWDEN Enter Zakaria Bakkali. The little Belgium winger, who came on for Munir in the 79th minute, caused problems for Alavés from the minute he entered the field of play. Picking the ball up just inside the opponent’s half with two minutes to go, he entered on another mazy run, cutting in from the left. His direct approach brought about a clumsy tackle from the Alavés centre half and, after much delay and consideration, the referee pointed for a penalty. Dani Parejo calmly slotted the spot kick away to give Los Chés the win they so desperately needed. The relief around the whole stadium was there for all to see and finally Valencia had got their 2016-17 into gear and were off the bottom of the table. Next up for Voro and his team was a trip to the Madrid Region and a match up with newly promoted Leganés. Formed in 1928, it is the first time in their history that they have played in La Liga. They started well with a victory in Vigo and a home draw with neighbours Atlético and just prior to the Valencia game they had sprung a surprise by beating Deportivo La Coruña in Galicia. Again, luck was with Valencia as they registered a consecutive victory in controversial circumstances. Leganés took the lead through the Argentine Alexander Szymanowski. Soon afterwards, Nani equalised for the visitors. The goalkeeper looked to have been fouled initially by Rodrigo but to everyone’s surprise the referee did not blow his whistle, leaving the converging Nani with the simple task of scoring his first league goal for Valencia on his 500th professional appearance. Things got better for the visitors when Mario Suárez gave Valencia a second half lead, poking home a cross from Dani Parejo. The drama was not over yet because, late on, a clumsy challenge by Diego Alves gave Leganés the chance to draw level from the penalty spot.

The Brazilian keeper made amends for the foul by saving the effort from Szymanowski and in the process entered the record books for the most penalty saves (17) in the history of La Liga. The biggest test of the season to date came when Atlético Madrid waltzed into the Mestalla in early October. The remarkable game ended in a two-goal victory to the side from the capital, but not before Diego Alves had extended his penalty-saving record by two more! Stops in each half from Griezmann and Gabi earned him a tremendous ovation from the home fans, but Greizmann did gain revenge with the opening goal of the game. As Valencia pressed hard for an equaliser, Atlético regained possession and a long ball to Gameiro resulted in the French striker racing away and finishing with aplomb in time added on, to cement the victory for the visitors. The day before the Atlético game, Valencia officially confirmed that the former Italy and Roma and Galatasaray manager Cesare Prandelli would take charge of the club immediately after that match. The former international from Brescia comes with a good pedigree and he will be looking to bolster a defence that has still to keep a clean sheet in La Liga this season. Across the city, Levante UD have made a great start and sit clear at the top of the table after eight games. Their six victories have included the scalps of promotion rivals Nàstic and Zaragoza and in their last away game they registered a solitary goal victory over Valencia Region neighbours Elche. Anyone wishing to watch football in Valencia can obtain tickets from the box offices of both clubs. Further information can be found on the following websites. www.valenciacf.com www.levanteud.com

CLUBLAND

O HUSH OCTOBER October... where to begin with the historical and sentimental importance and significance this month has for so many people and countries? The Nuremberg Trials served a slice of justice with the sentencing of some of the highest ranking Nazi officers. The People’s Republic of China was founded just under 70 years ago, which was then followed by the unsuccessful coup in the ‘70s by the notorious ‘Gang of Four’. The first movie with spoken dialogue was released in New York in 1927. What we now know as El Salvador was ‘discovered’ by Columbus, where the natives were mistakenly identified as Indians. Brazil, Paraguay, Belgium and Bulgaria gained their independence from Portugal, Spain/Argentina, the Netherlands and the Ottoman Empire, respectively. Teddy Roosevelt gave his famous speech, unfazed and uninterrupted by the fact he had been shot on stage halfway into it. Births and deaths of icons and innovators range from Wilde’s literature to Nietzsche’s philosophy to Verdi’s operas… If you’re a millennial however, then this month might forever be engraved in your memory as the devastating, totally unexpected and heart wrenching breakup of Brangelina. I know, will the pain ever go away? Now you might of heard of the Valencia Feria (Av. de les Fires, 1), it’s that odd building looking like a stadium just off the motorway. You’ve probably never had a reason to go, unless you went to a business fair or got lost! But this year, they are hosting Halloween Valencia Project Kowai from October 30-31. What does that mean? I have no idea. What I can tell you however is that the venue fits 1500 Uni and Erasmus students and from the promotional Article © 2016 24/ 7 Valencia

L'UMBRACLE

video online, it looks like it’s going to be an unforgettable night! Buy your tickets now. I have mentioned The Basement (secret location) in the past, and for good reason. They are the best at organising events in Valencia, especially for big occasions like New Years. Obviously this month will be their Halloween celebration. The location is kept a secret until the last minute. So you buy your ticket, and await further instructions. Not much is known about the event called ‘Creepy as F*ck’, but last year was a great success and this year looks as promising. If you check out the web, you will see various tickets ranging from 10€ to 100€. They even have a Charlie Sheen deal, which includes the return bus and a bottle of Jägermeister for 75€. Winning. This next event is called No Closet!! (Plaza del Ayuntamiento) Now this is not some weird segregation of wooden pieces of furniture that serve the purpose of storing clothes, but more to break the whole being ‘in the closet’ stigma and encourage people to just be themselves and embrace who they are. Yes, October is also LGBT month. Some Spanish artists will be headlining this festival, with some ‘80s influenced pop and present-day electro. If you’re interested, you will have to wait for more info regarding location and time. Although they tend to do it in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. And if you’re not interested… Then you could go to Valencia’s most famous club, Umbracle Terraza (Av. Professor López Piñero, 5). Now, we know that Spain has some of Europe’s

best weather and only here could you be walking around in shorts in October. But that won’t last, and open air clubs like Umbracle will have to shut up shop until next season. So you might want to make the most of it while you still can. If I were to pick a day in particular, I would go for the 22nd for their St. Tropez theme night. Little to no information on what to expect for Halloween is out there, so you might want to go to the places mentioned prior. Oh, and how could I possibly forget about Oktoberfest ! Now usually when the weather starts getting a bit colder I wouldn’t send you to the port, unless I didn’t like you. This time however, there is a reason to go. Oktoberfest will take place at Malabar (Sc Puerto, 2, the weird white building on the pier) from the 6th to the 12th! It’s a fancy-looking venue, with nice views obviously. Main reason to go is because it seems to be the only place properly celebrating this tradition. Last but not least, La3 (C/ Padre Porta, 3) This club is a fun all year round, but this month you should go on the 22nd. Zomboy is headlining with other acts including Qwert. If this means nothing to you, then just know that it’s a club, with electro music. This is ‘the go to place’ for all the ‘cool kids’ of Valencia, so if you also think you’re hip, you have a tattoo of an anchor or a swallow, a bushy beard and some stretched out earrings, then you’ll feel right at home. It is in the port area of town. Now with everything that has been going on this year, whether it be American politics to EU referendums, to the deaths of some of England’s most respected and adored artists, I am sure we will be seeing some fun and creative Halloween outfits. Here’s a fun drinking game for you: Take a shot every time you see a girl dressed as ‘Harley Quinn’, you might be wasted sooner than you think. Have a good one, people… Wills Matt

CHILL OUT FADO AT CAFÉ PESSOA

CAFÉ PESSOA Set in the hip barrio of Ruzafa, trees line the corner of this mellow terraza that sits facing an elegant fin de siècle building that has housed the ‘Café Pessoa’ cocktail bar since 2008. The co-owner tells us that there are many stories concerning the birth of the cocktail. One of them concerns a tavern in San Francisco that tended to decorate their drinks with the feather of a cock rooster, giving the name to what we now know as cocktails, literally “tails of a cock rooster”. They have a fine selection of liqueurs and juices. The fruit is noticeably fresh and we must not forget their principal ingredient…passion! All of this makes Café Pessoa a reference point as a cocktail bar in the city. They have an ample list of gins, rums, whiskies and shots. Here, your pleasurable evenings slowly slip into the night with ease. The vintage-style long lamps emit a warm orange-ember light that makes you feel relaxed and at home. You can also try

their Portuguese vino verde. The name of the bar is a homage to Portugal’s most famous poet and writer, Fernando Pessoa. It reflects the cultural tastes of the Portuguese brothers Ricardo and Rogerio, who run this place and grew up in the capital of Lisbon. At Café Pessoa, you will find painting and photography exhibitions, acoustic concerts and recitals every month. The music soundtrack included bossa nova, fado, jazz and more modern sounds. The last type we went, we enjoyed listening to Brazilian tropicália by ‘Os Mutantes’ in the background. The clientele is informed ranging from couples in their late 20s to bohemians

in their 60s. La Asociación Espai Tuga forms the bridge between the Portuguese and Valencian cultures. Café Pessoa is their base for members and guests including intercambio language nights and other activities.

WWW.247VALENCIA.COM Tell us something about experience in the digital world.

your

My name is Teresa Méndez Dasca and I am a graphic designer who specializes in web pages, virtual shops, blogs, and digital design in general, as well as being a community manager for social networks and a web host. My background is very much in the arts, as I have an Arts degree from the Escuela de Artesanos of Valencia. Two years later, I earned a diploma in Ilustración Artística in the Escuela de Artes y Oficios of Valencia. Finally, I did a course at Universidad de Bellas Artes of the UPV and graduated after five years, specialising in Graphic Design. Why do I design web pages? When I finished my education, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do. I started to work in my family’s own business, where I learnt from my father who made web pages starting in the ‘90s. Ten years later, I am the one teaching him about web pages for mobile phones and tablets, using positioning via SEO, Google Tools for Webmaster, Google Analytics and social networks in general.

The great thing about working in the design world is that you enter such a large field: graphic design, editorial design, corporate design, advertising design, digital design and illustration. Our clients trust in us because we take on the task of developing their ideas, creating and designing them with the aim of making their project unique and one that stands out from the competition.

How does the new web page WWW.247VALENCIA.COM work?

The website of 24/7 Valencia is characterized by its own contents as an informative magazine with current news about events, festivals and so on in the Valencia Region, focusing on the foreign community of English speakers especially. For this reason, we decided to work with the WordPress platform, the best option for a digital magazine due its simplicity and optimization regarding content, making it easy to use for the 24/7 Valencia team to add articles.

This website is not merely a blog but it is also a directory where the visitor can see with just one visit what is going on in Valencia 24 hours a day and seven days a week, where to dine out and what museum to visit, making things that much easier for people to find their way around the city. What are the web page’s contents?

The website is divided into eight categories: Art, Gastronomy, Health, Music, Nightlife, Places To Visit, Popular Festivals and Sport. The contents are updated daily and feature different writers with different points of view, exclusive interviews and more… We also have a directory so that visitors

can

VALENCIA BOOKS

EUGENE W. CARMICHAEL

Tell us something about background and experiences.

EUGENE W. CARMICHAEL

your

My name is Eugene Carmichael. I was born on the beautiful island of Bermuda, the first day of October, 1939. Bermuda was originally discovered by the Spanish explorer Juan de Bermudez from Cartagena. The Spanish Crown chose not to hold onto it, and it was later re-discovered by British Admiral Sir George Somers and remains a British overseas territory. I have retired here in Pedralba, Valencia to see what I missed by not growing up in Spain. I was formerly an accountant and reinsurance company manager. Could you explain in detail what your latest book is about?

I am a natural sceptic. That means I always question the way we do things and I constantly wonder about what we believe and take for granted. I was wondering about what we think happens when we die, and I concluded that I think Mother Nature is too shrewd to waste our accrued knowledge and our talent. That led me to question if Mother Nature really starts from scratch with the birth of every newborn. I also earnestly believe that I had lived before. About 10 years ago I came to a firm conclusion that we have all lived before, and that when our present lives end we will go on to live again. This was a seriously radical thought and I shocked myself. However, I needed further research to see if anyone else thought as I do. The answer is: yes, only about half the world does; the Eastern half. Is the West out of touch with itself in a spiritual sense?

Eastern religions and culture have long believed that the energy of man does not die. Some Egyptian pharaohs believed that so firmly that they insisted that their entire staff had to be killed

when they died so as to follow them and continue to serve them in the next life. The energy that we speak of is our soul and our spirit, our personality, our accumulated knowledge, and our talent. That package does not die but is reincarnated into newborns to live again. As a result the death of a person is viewed as more of a simple transition onto the next life rather than the absolute end. End as Beginning. The Western world has regarded these concepts patronisingly, and as a consequence we suffer unnecessarily with bereavement and grief. There is our own sense of loss, which perhaps is as it should be, but our dearly beloved has moved on to his or her next great adventure. One place where the gift of talent from the old soul to the young can be easily seen in action is through the child prodigy who was born with a mature talent. A suggestion that you might like to follow up is to visit YouTube: ‘Amira Willighagen – Holland’s Got Talent 2013.’ (English translation) You will discover who gave her such a superb talent. The most impressive proof of all comes through very young children who actually tell us of their experiences in their former lives, some of which have actually been proved to be true. Would you say that death is the ultimate taboo in the modern world?

The topic of death is one that the vast majority of people in our modern society prefer not to think about or to discuss. However, we can only bury our heads

in the sand for so long before it has to be faced. I am trying to help by having written and published a small book to plant a seed that says there is good news and good reason to take a more positive attitude toward death. The title of my book is ‘Death is Not the End’ by Eugene W Carmichael. It is available through Amazon, and on Kindle. I also believe that it would be helpful if I could hold discussion sessions with groups, so if any reader would like to have me join in a meeting I can be contacted by e-mail: geneinspain@yahoo.com. How does Bermuda compare to Spain in terms of a place to live and work?

My life has positively changed since I moved to Spain from such a paradise as Bermuda. I love my home country and I keep up to date with events on a daily basis. I have not regretted the decision to move here because it has been highly educational for our son, Nathaniel. He is a mountain guide in the Spanish Pyrenees, and he really loves that life, something he could not do in Bermuda that has no mountains. Both he and my wife Lorna are multilingual. I am the problem as I struggle to learn Spanish. Although Bermuda imposes consumption tax rather than income tax, Spain is an absolutely wonderful and varied country in which to live. The greater my command of the language, the more I appreciate and understand the country. Plus, simply learning the culture, customs and language means I am learning and using my grey matter. That is something I have to use, or I will lose it. Interview by Owl Photo by Rich
