LOKATORKI (Inquilinos) A young woman buys a flat at a bailiff auction. When she wants to move in, it turns out that the keys she was given do not fit the locks. TUESDAY 8 CLITOPRAXIS One night, Thomas discovers his clitopraxis, a common sexual organ he ignored. He jumps into researching about himself out of guilty ignorance. Sparks crystalizes a fragment of existence while expanding the narrative development bringing two elements to light: on the one hand experience, through the story of generational transition from adolescence to adulthood, and on the other the collapse of imposed behavioral structures. An adult woman (the conductor) on the edge of breaking and a pack of teenage girls (the choir) simultaneously experience a supernatural version of coming-of-age. EL JARDÍN DE LAS DELICIAS DE EL BOSCO Psychoanalist Jean-Noël Picq points out a series of observations and interpretations on the famous triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch. Picq’s effort to theorize over scenes like the one with a pig dressed as a nun is commented by Eustache with a certain irony, adding audience’s reactions and questions and contradicting his friend’s theories with other images. PARIS S’EN VA A walk around Paris with the two actress that starred in the film Le pont du Nord following the rules of a board game. TORA NO O WO FUMU OTOKOTACHI (Los hombres que caminan sobre la cola del tigre) Medieval Japan. A samurai flees from his brother. He and his bodyguards have to disguise themselves as priests to cross a forest and elude the border guards. MARGARITA Y EL LOBO 1969. Margarita faces an ecclesiastical judge stating that there will only be separation of bodies and goods since marriage is for a lifetime. Throughout this busy day, we observe how Margarita’s life has been through fragmentary memories that are intertwined through musical acts. Koma A Korean-Japanese man arrives unexpectedly to Koma village to deliver an antique roll with an image to a family: he is fulfilling grandfather’s dying with, who was visitor in that very place a long time ago. That final duty leads him to meet a woman that lives in that house. TADJREBEH (La experiencia) The hard daily life of an orphan boy who works and sleeps in a photography studio while he tries to get closes to his object of desire, an older girl that studies in a high-class school. The ninth edition of Valencia’s very own film festival, ‘La Cabina Festival Internacional de Mediometrajes’ (medium-length films), will take place from 3 November to the 13th. The films in this year’s festival will be shown across four different venues: the Filmoteca in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, the Centre Cultural La Nau and the Institut Français at C/ Moro Zeit, 6. Over the last eight years, the festival has grown in both scope and popularity. It has now become a firm, stand-out fixture on the city’s arts calendar and is the most important festival of its kind in the world.

quality of these films shows they clearly deserve a public. What is interesting about the medium-length format is that in many cases the director has made the artistically brave but often commercially suicidal decision to not pad out their films to an unnecessary length, in order to ensure a theatre release, but to tell their story in precisely the time they consider they need, which may be 30 or 40 minutes. These are high-quality films by excellent directors which, due to their length, you are unlikely to see anywhere else. La Cabina takes its name from the seminal Spanish medium-length film about a very creepy telephone box, directed by Antonio Mercero in 1972 and starring José Luis López Vázquez. Just 34 minutes long, the film is a quirky and disconcerting fable of modern-day

horror and won an Emmy in 1973 for best TV film. You can check it out on YouTube. This year there are a number of standout films coming to the festival, which will bring the world’s best films of 30-60 minutes in length to the city of Valencia for 11 days this month. Perhaps one of the most topical is the ‘Art of the Deal’, a satirical take on Donald Trump’s bestselling business book starring Johnny Depp, Ron Howard and Alfred Molina and directed by Jeremy Konner. The film is not competing for awards in the festival but it is part of the official section and will have its big screen world premiere here in Valencia on 8 November, coinciding with the U.S. elections. There were 380 films entered for the festival, of which 25 have been chosen for the Official Section from 13 different countries: France, Austria, Macedonia, Spain, Poland, Finland, Chile, Germany,

One film in this section which is attracting a lot of interest is the Spanish premiere of ‘Junjun’ from the British director Paul Thomas Anderson. It follows British musician and erstwhile Radiohead guitarist, Johnny Greenwood, as he travels to Rajasthan, where he performs with an array of different Indian musicians. There are also two interesting mediumlength films which take a fascinating look at different aspects of the Israeli-

What is jazz for you?

SIMON MARK TAYLOR Please tell us something about your background in music.

I started playing piano at the age of 12 and then gave up! A few years later I discovered the saxophone and that was it! I was hooked. I went back to piano lessons again and at the age of 18 went to study a degree in jazz music at Leeds College of Music. It was a great experience and I had the good fortune to play with some of the best musicians from around the world. Since leaving college I have been lucky and have worked throughout Europe with various artists, recording for TV, and having lots and lots of fun!

That’s a whole three-year debate at Jazz College. Hahaha... but for me, jazz is about interacting with musicians and listeners in the moment. Creating something spontaneously and for it to mean something. But it is also about having fun, constantly learning and surprising yourself. Discovering new sounds. Tell us about a typical day for you as a musician.

A typical day for me would be first going to teach. Then I would do some practice in the afternoon and then either record, rehearse with a band or play a gig. Some months are really busy, like now, and then other months are a lot quieter. For example, January usually calms down and that’s a time to do some practice. But every day is always full of music.

What is it that is so special about the saxophone?

How do you find Valencia as a place to live and work as a musician?

I think Valencia is an amazing city. I love it. However it is difficult to survive as a musician. But then again, any big city is the same. The music world has changed so quickly and it’s tough. There are so many great musicians here, I really enjoy being able to play with so many people. On the downside I recently have started to see in Valencia what was happening in Manchester 10 years ago. Lots of jam sessions are popping up all over the city and this is suppressing the opportunities for original bands to get gigs. Venues would rather pay less for a small band where numerous other musicians sit in to play some tunes, instead of booking original bands. It’s good business for the venue, but bad culturally. Where can we see you play live in the coming months?

In the following weeks I will be playing in the MUV festival with my new project and am also playing with other bands in the usual music venues around the city. I’m also working with a great new hip-hop group from Castellón called Calmoso & the BlackFang. They have various dates around Castellón and Valencia. Check them out on Facebook!

What are your musical influences?

I have had so many influences over the years. As you grow as a musician, your tastes also grow and change. But I have always come back to a few of the greats such as Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Griffin, Maceo Parker and then more of the soul-jazz guys like Rusty Bryant and Stanley Turrentine. But I just love good music, doesn’t matter what style, as long as it grooves.

Could you describe your latest music projects?

The latest project I’m working on is based on an EP I recorded at the start of the year called “Things to Come”. It started off as a completely solo project where I recorded, played and produced the whole thing. However, it got some interest and has turned into a band. I’m really excited! So now I’m working with some great musicians here in Valencia, Calyce JoNene, Federico Zanetti and Tico Porcar. It’s jazz-influenced, but

At the moment, I’m really concentrating on writing and recording my own music. It’s a slow process, but I would love to develop my latest project and maybe do some gigs with a live string quartet. We are also working with video and would like to incorporate this into live performances, create a more cinematic experience. It’s funny, I read the other day that within TV and film, the public don’t want to know the outcome of the story. They want to be left guessing

WILD MUSHROOM AND ROASTED CHESTNUT RISOTTO By Helen Westwater

With the change of the clocks, shorter days and chilly nights…here’s a warming recipe to get the taste buds flowing using two of the latest arrivals from the seasonal kitchen, wild mushrooms and roasted chestnuts. One type of Spanish wild mushroom that you will start to see in the fruit and vegetable shops around this time of year are the wide, flat, saffron-coloured ‘rebollones’, also known as rovellones or níscalos. Although their Latin name ‘Lactarius Deliciosus’ seems very apt for they are as delicious as they are expensive. However, they have a pronounced flavour that means you can be sparing with them and still give a distinct flavour to your meals. This recipe incorporates them with rice, rosemary and parmesan. All considered to be metal foods according to five elements of Chinese medicine and therefore appropriate to eat during the autumn, dispersing damp and promoting energy circulation and immunity. They are also umami taste foods which are also said to help stimulate the digestive system and saliva glands. So before you wet your lips, here’s the recipe.

RISOTTO

WILD MUSHROOM AND ROASTED CHESTNUT RISOTTO

Ingredients. Serves 4 • 1 medium onion, finely chopped • 1 clove garlic • Olive oil • 1 oz butter • 400 gm risotto rice • 1 glass vermouth, martini or white wine • 1.5 L hot vegetable stock or rich chicken stock • 1 teaspoon soy sauce • 6 prepared chestnuts (peeled and cooked), quartered • 250 gm rebollones, chopped (leave some fairly large pieces so they can be seen) • Sprig rosemary • 100 gm parmesan, finely grated. Reserve some of decoration • Parsley to serve

Method In a large heavy-bottomed frying pan gently heat the oil. Add the rebollones and lightly cook. Add the crushed garlic and when they have softened and the juices have started to come out of the mushrooms, remove from the pan and reserve to one side. Next, add the chopped onion with a little more oil if necessary. Add the rice and stir so it is nicely coated with the

oil. Turn up the heat a little and add the martini. Stir and let the alcohol burn off. Reduce the heat. Start to add the hot stock bit by bit, stirring as you go along. When you have added about half the stock you can either leave the rice at this stage until you are ready for dinner or proceed straight away. When you are ready for stage two, continue adding the stock, followed by the pre-cooked mushrooms and the peeled and quartered chestnuts. Add 1 scant teaspoon of rosemary, salt and white pepper to season. The perfect consistency is moist but not soupy so be very careful with not adding too much stock. The rice is ready when it has just sufficient bite but is not soggy. Just before serving, snip some flat parsley into the dish and stir in the butter and the grated parmesan. Serve with a few slivers of parmesan on top. AMEYAL ALTA COCINA MEXICANA

MEXICAN FINE DINING, STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE Mexican fine dining? That’s Ameyal’s proposition. A reviewer must have an open mind but ‘Mexican’ and ‘fine dining’ in the same sentence? I had no idea what to expect. Take a moment to mentally list all the stereotypes that come to your mind about Mexican food and culture. Go on, I’ll wait. I bet you’ll rack up more than 10. Now blow them away. Banish that burrito. Cremate that cactus. Pulverise that poncho. Ameyal is so far away from these (literally) cheesy stereotypes that the only way you’ll see a sombrero in there is by Googling for an image. Let me explain how my impressions of Mexican food have been changed forever by this quietly confident new gem on Valencia’s restaurant scene. Ameyal is located just a few steps south of the Mercado de Colón, an appropriate location since the renovated market hall

is itself creating a strong reputation as a destination for gastronomes. The discreet entrance – where you’ll be met by a smiling host – leads into a plush ‘mezcal lounge’, somehow simultaneously modernist and cosy. On the walls, the large black & white photographs could be of a Spanish city but in fact it’s San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, famous for its colonial Spanish architecture. The space opens up into a smart dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows onto a small courtyard. With clever trailing greenery (look carefully to spot the little chilli plants), Ameyal has turned their narrow yard into a peaceful haven, with a small fountain bubbling into a clear pool. This humble spring is more than just an aesthetic water feature – spring has a special significance here. The word ‘ameyal’ means ‘spring’ in Nahuatl, one of the indigenous languages of Mexico. You already know some other Nahuatl words because the English adopted them: ‘coyote’, ‘chocolate’, ‘chilli’, ‘tomato’, for example, and unsurprisingly given its ubiquity in Mexican cuisine, ‘avocado’. The connection Ameyal’s owners are keen to make is that their establishment is a bubbling source of

the best of Mexican culture. And since opening in March 2016, the Ameyal brand of quality food and cultural insight has been flowing into Valencia. There are two drinks lists at Ameyal: one for vino (which includes both Mexican and Valencian wines) and one for cocktails and Mexican drinks, which includes tequila, mezcal and sotol. General Manager Oscar Asiain proudly informed me that their carefully curated drinks menu makes Ameyal the home of the most diverse collection of Mexican alcohol in Spain. What an education. There’s even an intriguing section on the mezcal list called ‘ilegal’. Unfortunately, due to requiring full mental faculties to experience and retain information on my visit (aka: being a pathetic lightweight), I had to skip the booze. Luckily, my companion happily took one for the 24/7 Valencia team, consuming a ‘Mula de Guanajuato’ cocktail recommended by Asiain. I sampled a mouthful. After a full frontal thwack of tequila tempered with grapefruit and lime juice, bubbles erupt into the nose as the tongue is steamrollered by ginger fizz. Woo, it’s a thrill! But as the ginger ebbed away, it was replaced by something… smoky. My wide-eyed wonder turned to nose-wrinkling confusion. This peculiar acquired taste didn’t bother

my companion, who wore a wide smile as he drained the attractive mugful. My non-alcoholic lemon water was more suited to my taste. More than cheese-with-everything, the stereotype I was most concerned about was that Mexican food can be fiery hot but without the depth of flavour of other spicy cuisine, such as Indian or Thai. Not so here. Allow Ameyal to showcase their food by opting for the Menú Ejecutivo/Mediodía or, if it’s evening, the Menú Degustación. Every dish has wow-factor, even down to the petite homemade bread roll Laura offered us (we chose seasonallyappropriate pumpkin and seed). The multi-sensory nature of the experience is carefully curated. Many dishes are designed to be eaten as finger-food, which may be unusual in ‘alta cocina’ but how else does one eat a taco? Or a tiny wafer cone of jalapeño cream studded with citrus pearls (an ‘aperitivo del chef’)? A major asset to Ameyal is the superb team under the direction of Asiain. We didn’t see the key protagonist, head chef Mauricio Gómez Vives, but servers Laura (Valenciana), Alex (Cuban) and Danny (Mexican) demonstrated that Ameyal does alta servicio, too. As

well a comprehensive and confident understanding of the menus, they possess that magical ability to sense when you need them before blending into the background. And they’re responsible for some gastronomic theatrics: dishes need explaining, sauces need pouring and – a highlight of the a la carte menu – avocados need mashing at the table. Ameyal’s guacamole is the freshest in any restaurant worldwide because it’s made to order, in front of you, by your waiter.

Danny poured our soup over three ‘textures of corn’ – the bright yellow squash soup softening a still-life arrangement of cornbread, mini corn and milled maize. Next, it took us a while to translate ‘pulpo zarandeado’ – literally ‘buffeted octopus’, which sounds more unfortunate than stir-fried. The crispy/ chewy seafood was balanced on a soft herby bizcocho (muffin/scone), sweetpotato purée contrasting with a dark chipotle tinta (ink). Next were tostadas: soft wheat circles topped with beans, festooned with radish, flowers and lemon gel spheres. Then corn tacos two ways: buey (ox), pan-fried and meltingly tender, and an Ibérico pulled pork.

PRANDELLI LOOKS TO BE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE The early feedback both on and off the pitch regarding Valencia’s newest recruit, the manager Cesare Prandelli, seems to be a positive one as Los Chés look to move up the table and compete for a European spot as the season progresses. The Italian took charge of his first competitive game with a match up against Sporting Gijón in Asturias. With Nani injured, the former Galatasaray S.K. boss sprung a tactical surprise by playing Cancelo in an attacking role on the right hand side. The impressive El Molinón stadium always creates an intimidating atmosphere. However, the home fans were silenced inside six minutes when Mario Suárez finished off a slick team move with a precise shot from just inside the penalty area. Sporting got back into the game just before the interval when Carlos Castro levelled with a clinical header that gave Diego Alves no chance.

The second half was a scrappy affair but the visitors got the all-important goal to secure the three points. Once again, the scorer was Mario Suárez, who volleyed home from close range after a wayward defensive header fell invitingly into his pathway. The winning start for Prandelli moved the team from outside the relegation zone to 12th in the league, such is the narrow margin from the Europa League spots downwards. Valencia’s next game was at Mestalla and a showdown with the mighty Barcelona. The Catalans had a couple of injury issues with Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba ruled out after picking up knocks in the midweek Champions League clash with Manchester City. Former Valencia favourites Jérémy Mathieu and Paco Alcácer had to be content with the substitutes’ bench but there was a starting place for another former Los Chés idol, André Gomes, who lined up in midfield alongside Andrés Iniesta and Sergio Busquets. As always with this contest, it was an explosive & pacy event that was only spoilt by an incompetent refereeing

performance. Barcelona took the lead in highly controversial circumstances. Messi cut inside from his left and unleashed a shot from the edge of the box that was heading straight in the direction of Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan, who was standing in a blatant offside position and obscuring the vision of Alves, instinctively jumped over the ball. Because of the restriction created by Suárez, the Valencia stopper reacted slowly and just failed to reach the shot as it found the back of the net. Incredibly Alberto Undiano Mallenco did not even confer with his linesman and pointed immediately to the halfway line. Remonstrations from Alves and the Valencia defence fell on deaf ears and the Valencia keeper received a yellow card for his troubles. Once again, the home side had not managed to keep a clean sheet and were on the back foot after just 22 minutes. Valencia responded well to the setback, however, and looked to have been denied a stonewall penalty when Rodrigo was felled in the box when heading in on goal. Again the referee, heavily rumoured to be a Barcelona fan, showed a complete disinterest in the home side’s complaint.

REMEMBER, REMEMBER It’s not everywhere you can enjoy a drink outside and not worry about catching a cold in the month of October, but that’s what makes Valencia so special and different. It just makes you want to go out and socialize, which is why it has so much going on with festivals, clubs and countless bars offering the best for whoever wants it. So, here are some fun events to look forward to this month.

Cream (C/ San Vicente Martír, 305), not to be confused with the legendary trio but the club formerly known as TB and Pacha, will be hosting JB Parties and Meneo on 4 November. The guest is an artist from Guatemala, and his style is (in his words) ‘electropical’. It’s a kind of rap/synth style. If not for the music, you should go for the drinks and the venue at least. With a large open dance floor and a pretty cool VIP section at the back facing the audience, it’s a fun place to be drinking JB cocktails. The location is a bit far from the centre, I like to point this out because it does tend to be the last club on your route. Friday and Saturday are their best nights. Another club which has changed name is Ánimas Room (C/ de Martí, 4), previously known as Posada de Ánimas. The venue has been reformed giving it a fresh feel to the place, but the people it will attract will be the same, so expect a mid-20s to mid-30s crowd with commercial hits. It’s in Ruzafa, so it’s always an option as the neighbourhood is one of the best in Valencia at the moment in terms of hip café bars, shops and restaurants and electronica clubs. Mr. Belt & Wezol will be DJing, with an EDM sound straight from the Netherlands, so Mya is promising a night of music and entertainment you wouldn’t want to miss.

Barraca (C/ Las Palmeras, Sueca) is a

go by car or more sensibly, by bus. But the effort is worth it if you want some of the best electro available. You might

want to go on the 19th for M-nus, the record label that gave us Richie Hawtin and countless others. Although not in

November, the other big night is on 5

December for their 51st anniversary, which is an amazing amount of time for

any club to have been around. Further special guests are still to be announced so check their web for more info.

OK, so this next one sounds like a lot Indiana (C/ San Vicente Martír, 95) is known for its Thursday Erasmusthemed nights. It attracts a young and diverse crowd mainly from Spain but also other places. The music is a mix of R&B and electro and always includes current hits. They are hosting the Pijama Party on the 4th. Now I don’t know about you guys but I never know whether to take the themes literally and rock up in my PJs or not. What if it’s just the organizer of the event who thought it was a fun name for an event. Will the dancers dress in their PJs? Should I bring my blanky? Nah, probably not. Sounds like an interesting night though.

Tell us about your background and experiences in the world of books

I studied the History of Art and while I was studying at university I started to get involved in publishing in Turin, Italy, where I grew up. But it was in Valencia that I first started to work in a bookshop and I realized that it was the first job that I really enjoyed doing. The door of a bookshop is often a filter and whoever passes that barrier is almost certainly somebody who has a curiosity about the world around them. Working with people who read is the real joy of this job, where every day you are confronted with and learn something new. After working in the first bookshop, I had to work in various jobs like a pizza parlour, tour guide and as a telephone operator but finally I decided to open my own bookshop: El Doctor Sax! Could you describe what can be found at your bookstore?

The librería is designed as if were a bookshop in San Francisco of the Beat Generation era, re-interpreting the idea of Beat. Beat is the literature that broke the rules and went against the thinking of the conservative epoch it was created in. The idea is to create a “Wow!” factor with the reader. We look for new and second-hand books, selected title by title, and we try offer

the cheapest price possible. MI AND L’AU You lived in Valencia in Spain for a few years and you have now been back in Finland for a fair while. How do the two cultures compare?

They don’t (laughs). Two different territories. Two different kinds of people. Two different languages… And that’s the beauty of it! Our point being: Instead of making comparisons, we’d rather invite people to travel and see the world with their own eyes. Could you tell us about the making of the new album, ‘Four Pair of Wings’?

We don’t really feel that we are “making albums.” It’s just the way we live. We play music, sculpt, paint, draw, photograph, write… At that time, we were by the lake, just walking around in the forest, swimming, having late night discussions with good friends, good food and good wine. One evening, we plugged three microphones in the room and the result is what you hear. You see,

this is what songsters do. They play for all those who come for a walk in their garden. Playing music is like having a discussion. And for us, the interest of the discussions, are the ideas that come after. We all live on the brink. Under these conditions, we cannot afford to neglect neither elegance nor delicacy, certainly not spirit. Until the last note, until the last word and, of course, until the last bottle. What’s great about this kind of recording is that you can also visit the garden by listening to the vinyl. The way we did it, as bare and simple as it sounds, we tried our best to give the impression to the listener that (s) he is in the same room as we are when the music is being played. It’s about the delusion of grandeur. We met many successful people who thought, that because of their success, they were geniuses. But we also met many unknown people who had the conviction of having a great but unrecognized talent or insight, people who believed they had made important discoveries that others didn’t understand nor appreciate. Fact is we all are simple mortals. So, the best is to go back to work before you can’t do anything about it anymore, even taming something as peaceful as a white piece of paper. Four Pair of Wings

The fact that we fall doesn’t mean we should forget to fly. Life is fragile, but this fragility must not become a weakness. In consequence, let’s take some risks, fly as high as we can, enjoy the landscape, and laugh about it. Under My Shoe Someone asked us if we were talking about God! Not at all. We were playing

the guitar and a cat came around and walked everywhere in the house. So it’s just a story about a cat walking around us while we play music for this very elegant feline. Strangely, it already happened to us in Kansas City, in 2006, when we played a gig at ‘The Pistols’. Mira was singing a song called “Cat”, and a beautiful cat came out of nowhere and sat under her chair. We also had a white cat visiting us when we lived in Valencia. A wild, white cat.
