NOVEMBER RAIN
November in Valencia is an odd month and the weather becomes increasingly unpredictable and moody. It’s perhaps a reminder that living in the South of Europe is not really just ‘sol y playa’ the whole time. Thankfully, some see variety as the spice of life…as Mick Jagger once sang in exile up the Mediterranean coast: “The sunshine bores the daylights out of me.” In this autumnal edition, we have a review of ‘LA CABINA’ Medium Length International Film Festival in Valencia. It features cinema from around the world and is deservedly growing in prestige due to the quality of its eclectic programme. Incidentally, it is the only one of its kind in the world. We look at the very rich legacy of ‘MUSLIM VALENCIA.’ The irrigation system the Moors developed from the Romans has made Valencia one of the most fertile of lands. Because of this, we are able to learn ‘HOW TO MAKE PAELLA’ at the ‘Escuela de Arroces y Paella Valenciana’ in the historic centre. In ‘STREET ART,’ we have an exclusive interview with DISNEYLEXYA who is one of the most talented artists on the scene. In ‘VALENCIA FOOTBALL,’ sports expert John Howden reviews these busy times for both Valencia CF and Levante UD.
We interview the newish ‘BODEGA DE LA HUERTA DE RAMONET’ about their quality product from the Valencia region and the rest of Spain. Celebrating their 25th anniversary, we interview Marc of the emblematic ‘CAFÉ DE LAS HORAS’ in the old town near Plaza de la Virgen. In ‘VALENCIA MUSIC,’ we have an exclusive interview with talented pianist and composer BAPTISTE BAILLY who has a new album out with his trio… See our packed November listings for Arts, Theatre, Cinema, Opera, Chill out, Restaurants, Tapas Bars, Shopping and more. See you next month! 24/7 Valencia team

Among the titles selected is the tribute to the Pulp Culture of the director of the cult film ‘Les garçons sauvages’, Bertrand Mandico, Ultra Pulpe, presented at the Critics’ Week at the last Cannes Film Festival. Other films premiered at international film festivals include Electric Swan (Konstantina Kotzamani) at the Venice Film Festival; Braquer Poitiers (Claude Schmitz) in competition at the Bright Future section in Rotter-

Of the films selected in the Official Section, there are 13 premieres in Spain and one in Europe, and of those of Amalgama, a total of six remain unreleased in our country. Amalgama, where films from Japan, Germany, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Denmark are screened, will deal with issues of burning political and social debate, such as the resurgence of the ultra-right,
Foreigners’ Internment Centres, virtual identity, anorexia, paradise lost in Syria and the romanticization of marginality. This is followed by the Inèdits section, in which five works by established directors are exhibited, which are largely unknown to the general public. On this occasion, 30 to 60-minute films directed by Suzie Templeton, Jonas Mekas, Helena Taberna, Barbara Hammer and François Truffaut will be screened. Music will be on show this year via the Visuals Section, which will host the live concerts of the Valencians Amatria and Wisemen Project on 28 November in the Renaissance cloister of La Nau. ninth century by the Moorish Kings, vastly improving on an existing Roman system. They have been at the heart of the Valencian economy, culture and folklore ever since. The irrigation channels and pipelines, built by Abderraman III and his ancestors, converted previously barren dust piles into fertile land. Bringing technology used in the driest parts of North Africa, the Moors redirected and siphoned off all the water they could find to the extent that the two local rivers, the Guadalaviar “the white river (the modern day Turia) and the Jucar “the ferocious” arrived to the sea more or less dry…with all their water channelled off to irrigate the land.
MUSLIM VALENCIA
Valencia was a Muslim town for well over 500 years. The Moors ruled over a prosperous, expanding city but how much of their legacy remains? The great Moorish General, Tariq Ibn Ziyad, a former slave who had risen through the ranks and had already conquered most of Southern and central Spain with a small but fiercely loyal army of around 7,000 men, took control of the city of Valencia in around 714 (the exact date is unclear). No blood was shed as Valencia’s Visigoth governor Agnescio didn’t fancy his chances against the great Tariq and decided to hand the city over peacefully in return for Moorish assurances to respect the religion, customs and personal property of the citizens. Tariq named Abdulcacer al Hudzali as the
Hakam II set up the “Tribunal de las Aguas, which still sits today every Thursday at the door of Valencia Cathedral, to govern the use of the irrigation system. New farming techniques and crops were introduced. the Ciutat Vella; evidence of the Moorish reconstruction of the city is all around. Part of the Moorish walls can be seen in the façade of the Iglesia del Temple (across the river from the Viveros gardens), in the entrance of the old University in Calle Comedias, under the Plaza Tossal, and inside some of the buildings along the Calle Caballeros (which unfortunately are no longer open to the public). It is most evident at the Portal de Valldigna, in Calle Salinas, an opening in the Moorish walls made in the fifteenth century to connect the adjacent streets, and the Plaza del Angel where you can see a section of the wall and a tower, which was part of a gateway to the city.
de Valencia will readily testify to the lasting influence of the chaotic Moorish town planners. Balansiya had two bridges over the Guadalaviar (the Turia river) where the Serranos and Trinidad bridges stand today. There were a number of mosques which were later converted into Christian churches by Jaume I. The Great Mosque was on the site of today’s cathedral and many other Valencian churches such as San Juan del Hospital, Santa Catalina and San Valero in Ruzafa were once Mosques. As a clear indication of the religious tolerance of the Moorish kings, there was also a synagogue in the Xerea and a Christian church, San Vicente de la Roqueta, which still remains on the Plaza de España, the oldest church in the city. Not all citizens were quite as tolerant as their Muslim rulers; the Moorish government had to intervene on a number of occasions when the Christians attacked the Jewish Community. There were also more than twenty public baths which fell into disuse after the Moors had left. During Christian rule in the middle ages when people only had a bath once or twice in their life when they got married and when they got baptised. The only surviving Moorish baths are the recently restored Baños del Almirante in Plaza de Napoles y Sicillia.
Perhaps, however, more than actual buildings the most enduring architectural legacy of Moorish Valencia is in the layout of the oldest parts of the city which follows the Moorish design of labyrinthine, narrow, winding streets (providing shade from the midday sun) turning back on themselves or coming to a dead end. With the exception of the longer straight thoroughfares which lead to the Great Mosque (the modern day calles de Serranos, el Mar, Caballeros and San Vicente) each street was inhabited by members of the same community of tradesmen or even the same family leading to nowhere in particular or winding round to “Azutcats” or cul de sacs. to get off to the country at any opportunity especially during the summer months. Whereas nowadays people head out to their “pueblos”, to the beach or up to the mountains, under the Moors the countryside was closer to home. “Munyas” or country retreats were set up within a few kilometres of the city walls, many of which would today be within the city’s boundaries. There were famous Munyas near the channels of Mestalla and Algiros and the royal retreat was where the Viveros gardens are now. Further up the river, near the Escuela official de Idiomas the gateway to the country retreat of Princess Zaydia still stands on a roundabout by the side of the main drag. Once a quiet place to get away from it all, it is now surrounded by sixties apartment blocks and heavy traffic. One of the most famous Munyas was Ruzafa, built for Prince Omeya Abd Allah al Balansi whose lands extended throughout the region and into Murcia and Catalonia. As well as the landscape and make up of Valencia, the Moors left their mark on many aspects of Valencian life. Twenty five per cent of words in Spanish (like “aceite” and “alfombra”) have Moorish roots, place names like Benidorm or Albufera and surnames like Albelda or Alborch also come directly from ancient Arabic. Horchata, turron, oranges, rice and, some claim, customs such as shared dishes like paella and Valencia’s bustling street life can also be traced back to the Moorish way of life. Even that most Valencian of expressions “Xe!” has its roots in Arabic. The Chinese invented paper and the Moors introduced paper to Europe via a paper mill in Xativa, Valencia. That’s quite a legacy. HOW TO MAKE PAELLA day, and we were off. Where to? The Mercado Central (The Central Market) of course, to buy the ingredients for our paellas; we were to cook 3 paellas - D, B and I were going to cook a paella for three, the other couples would be cooking paellas for two. This is a “school” offering places on a daily basis to learn the fine art of cooking rice dishes. It’s not just paella that you can learn how to make, hence the name ‘Escuela de Arroces’ y Paella Valenciana (the school of rice and Paella Valenciana) you can learn how to make a vegetarian or a seafood version.
LEARN TO MAKE AUTHENTIC PAELLA A DAY AT ‘ESCUELA DE ARROCES Y PAELLA VALENCIANA’ Though I love paella Valenciana, if I want to make my own I have to do it in the privacy of my own home with no Valencianos to witness me in the act. Valencians seriously believe you have to be Valencian to make a decent paella - It’s impossible, impossible, for a guiri (foreigner) to make a decent paella! Paella Valenciana is sacred, really. I even have a friend whose parents lived in Paris for many years and couldn’t get their Sunday paella to taste right, so when they came to Valencia for family holidays, or when friends from here were visiting them in Paris, they always took Valencia water with them, for the paella. You cannot play around with a Paella Valenciana...It is always made with chicken and rabbit, and is nearly always eaten at lunchtime…
And I’m here to tell you that after our second visit to the ‘Escuela de Arroces y Paella Valenciana’ (the school of rice and Paella Valenciana) in the Barrio del Carmen, we are really pretty good at the classic chicken and rabbit paella. No more will I submit to our Valencian guests taking over, as they have in the past, the cooking of what they think will be a second-rate paella!
This time, as we approached, there was a crowd of female cyclists in the narrow street in front of the restaurant, trying to secure their bikes to the bars of the windows of a building opposite. We were meeting B, who arrived at the same time as us, on the stroke of 10 am by the Miguelete- the cathedral bell. We entered the ‘School of Rices’ where we met 2 couples. An English couI now make a very good Arroz Melo- ple visiting Valencia for his birthday so de Mariscos (soupy rice withe and two more Dutch ladies, sisters, seafood, meloso means honey- in the city to chill… ish) I know it’s good because my daughter’s partner, a Valencian, has We had coffee as our tutor for the not only told me it is but always re- day introduced himself and Juan, quests it on visits to our home! who was to be our translator for the
The visit to the Mercado Central is most entertaining and informative, and included a potted history of the building, before taking us to various stalls to buy the different green beans for the dish - we were making a Summer Paella Valenciana today - beans in the summer and artichokes (alcachofas) in the winter, when the beans get too expensive. Then on to the chicken stall to order the chicken and rabbit we would be using today, we would return for it a little later when it was chopped

and ready for the recipe. So, on to the pimentón stall, paprika to you and me. Here we bought smoked paprika as we would be cooking our paella over gas, and the smokiness normally imparted by the traditional orange-wood fire would be added in this way. We visited five of the markets 400 or so stalls to pick up the ingredients, including the azafran (saffron) where we learned all about this highly prized and hugely expensive aromatic. Then we made our way back to the restaurant to cook our paellas, but first we had to don our chef’s hat and apron - and latex gloves, because we would be cooking with the chef’s expert instructions. Breaking, not chopping, the beans, podding the broad beans, grating the tomatoes. Whilst the ingredients which we had mixed (an enormous amount) of water reduced into a delicious caldo (stock) we took a break and were invited to almozar (eat elevenses). A delicious tortilla de patatas, which was a potato omelette that another of the chefs had been making while we cooked. This was served with a large slice of Valencian tomato (they are surely the tastiest to-
matoes in the world?) followed by clochinas al vapor (Steamed mussels) and served with a crisp and cool white wine. Then it was back to the kitchen to add the rice and to stay with the dish until it was perfectly cooked, which involved highly amusing steps and was very entertaining. Afterwards, it was back to the table carrying our own paellas which were arranged in a row and we all sat down to eat. A lovely salad was bought to the table and large glasses of red wine were poured to accompany our meal. Out tutor encouraged us to eat it with a spoon directly from the dish - the traditional way, and also to try each other’s as “no paella is ever exactly the same”. I have to say that I thought ours was the best (but I may be biased!). This is also a restaurant and it had filled up nicely inside - well worth a visit just to eat, as the food looked great. There’s a presentation of a Diploma to say that we had successfully cooked a paella and that we were qualified to cook one for friends and family. I have purposely left a lot of the detail of our day out of this report, so that if you try the
tour and I strongly recommend you do, there will be enough surprises to make your day as enjoyable and memorable as ours. It is a really fun day run by a friendly and very enterprising team of professionals who obviously really enjoy what they are doing and, judging from the other diners around us, this goes for the restaurant too. FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA CREAMY COURGETTE AND CASHEW NUT SOUP WITH LIME
As we reel from the shock of the change of the clock, the nights draw in and there is a chilly dampness in the air. November is here. According to Chinese medicine, this is a time to get plenty of sleep to boost immunity and strength and to eat warming meals balanced with sour. So, let food be your medicine and snuggle in for this recipe of creamy courgette and cashew nut soup that is spiced with lime and smoked paprika. Courgettes are readily available throughout the year. If you have your own allotment or vegetable box delivery they will be at the end of their season, and maybe have transformed into big fat
CREAMY COURGETTE AND CASHEW NUT SOUP WITH LIME -Serves 4Ingredients 2 large courgettes or 1 marrow 1 Salad onion 2 garlic cloves crushed Olive oil for marinade and frying 1 1/2 handfuls of raw cashew nuts 1 1/2 pints of vegetable or chicken stock Salt and pepper to season Juice of 1 lime Sprinkle of paprika
marrows that can be a little tough, so they are perfect for use in soups and casseroles. Here, they are combined with cashews. As well as their health-giving properties of high levels of iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, phosphorus and manganese…they lend a creaminess to the soup that you would only otherwise get with real cream. Lime and paprika add our touch of pungent sour and a boost of vitamin C.

Method First using a vegetable peeler, grate wide strips of the courgette so you have a line of the green and the white. You will need 2 strips per person. Squeeze the lime juice and leave to marinate with a teaspoon of sea salt and a tablespoon of virgin extra olive oil. Toast a few cashew nuts and also leave to one side to use later as decoration. Finely slice the salad onion and heat olive oil gently in the bottom of a large saucepan. Fry the onion till transparent then add the garlic. Stir for two minutes then add the roughly chopped courgettes. Stir to make sure ingredients not
sticking on the bottom, then leave to sweat over a gentle heat with the pan lid on. Bring the stock to boil, then add to the soup base. Cook for about 30 to 40 minutes. Add the rest of cashew nuts and blend in a liquidizer. If your soup is not creamy enough, return to the stove to reduce a little more. Strain the marinade juice into the soup. Taste and adjust seasoning accordingly. When you are ready to serve, warm soup and place in bowls. Decorate with the marinated courgette strips, the toasted cashew nuts and a sprinkling of paprika.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DISNEYLEXYA 24/7 Valencia: Tell us something about your art, philosophy, objectives and projects… Disneylexya: From a formal point of view, my art is a cocktail of Pre-Columbian Latin American art and illustration with European influences that creates an alchemy. What influenced me in this sense was leaving Chile, my country of origin, and integrating myself in Valencia. This journey and the need to speak the local language, in my own way, has led me to return to ‘syncretism’. The art of Latin America during the conquest is the art of syncretism, an aesthetic and conceptual meeting of two cultures where the work often looked to religion. In my case, I looked to turn this concept around by using form and colours from Latin America whilst From a conceptual point of view, I see using symbolism from the philoso- my art as a practical reply regarding phy of those times. the question of the art of survival. From my own perspective, in general Sometimes, I mix universal or inventterms, I would say that art is creatived symbols with European myths. I ity and arte. If you combine this all with creativity, you get the whole picture. My philosophy is to observe and forget time whilst I lose myself in my work, enjoying the process and the simple things of Street Art like the light, the stone walls and the surrounding vegetation. From time to time, I take a look to see what’s happening around me and to see who deserves my moral support and I occasionally ask awkward questions when situations need addressing. My objective from a personal point of view is to use my art as a step towards new paths to be taken in the future. Unfortunately, I was already
of an age by the time I took this decision to commit myself to art and life is very short to be involved with other areas. However, I will try everything possible to express myself freely and not be a spider trapped in its web. From a social point of view, my objective has the same function as urban art that is shared by all of my colleagues…understanding art in a public space as an activity of liberty & expression and as a snowball to motivate the people who see it in the streets. In terms of projects, I would like to be not just a visual artist but create a work that has other ramifications. Obviously, the visual part would be an important aspect but it does not have to be the very essence of the idea. For this work I have spent some time thinking about structures and possibilities, writing and trying to forget about why I think the way I do! Ha-ha! It is a slow process and sometimes I regress but I try to be constant with the medium I work in. One never knows when you are going to leave this space & time continuum and I would like to share this work before that happens. Interview by 24/7 Valencia team More information: www.disneylexya.com
VALENCIA FOOTBALL
TREADING WATER With twelve games of La Liga now completed, Valencia sit in a midtable position that is healthier than it first suggests. They are only five points adrift of the top of the table and are seemingly treading water, neither dropping down nor gaining ground on a potential Champions League spot. Indeed, they are only eight points clear of a relegation spot as unfashionable teams continue to eke out unexpected results against the La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. Recent league games have seen Valencia play in patches but be mundane for large parts of matches. A plethora of injuries and disciplinary sanctions have undoubtedly played a part in the inconsistency the club has shown on the field of play but the signs are there that, post-Marcelino; things
are getting back on track. Albert Celades has gone quietly about his business despite the behind-the-scenes turmoil and the protests towards the owner. The likeable Catalan was rewarded with his first home victory in charge against Alavés. One of the recent positives for Los Che has been the goal scoring form of Maxi Gómez. Once again, it was the Uruguayan who gave Valencia the lead by latching onto a nice through ball from Rodrigo… before placing the ball back across the goalkeeper’s right into the bottom corner of the net. The home side doubled their lead in the second half with a penalty won and converted by Parejo. A clumsy challenge by the Basque keeper on the Spanish international, when there appeared to be no danger, gave the Valencia captain
the opportunity from 12 yards out. His “Panenka” style finish brought relief to the watching faithful but the fans still had to endure a nervy few minutes of injury time, after Lucas Perez reduced the deficit. In truth, Valencia deserved the victory against an uncreative Alavés but sloppy defensive errors continue to plague their play, and a more ruthless opponent would have capitalized on these errors. Such teams would be Atlético Madrid and Sevilla, who were two of the three clubs next up on the league radar after the International break. A trip to the new Wanda is not the same as heading to the “spit and sawdust” atmosphere of the Vicente Calderón but more like the “suit and tie” environment of the Bernabeau. As a result, it does not have the same appeal as it once did to many football aficionados.
35
The worry would be a “New Mestalla” would detract in a similar fashion, but Atlético seemed to have adapted to the change of venue quickly enough. To come away from the capital with a point is always pleasing. The home side dominated the first half and went into the interval a goal to the good, courtesy of a VAR assisted penalty that Diego Costa duly accepted. Little by little, Los Che entered the fray in the second half and levelled thanks to a pearl of a free kick by Parejo that Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos would have been proud of. A few scares late on but most fans would consider this a point gained. Equally, supporters would consider the home draw with Sevilla as two points lost, although the Andalusian side was the better team for threequarters of the game. Struggling until the final twenty minutes of the match, Valencia were lucky to be only one goal down at that stage of the proceedings. The introduction of the forgotten man Rubén Sobrino changed the pattern of the game and nine minutes from time the burly centre forward glanced home a neat header from a pinpoint Parejo cross. Stalemate once again
for Valencia who neither gained nor lost ground on their rivals, just continued treading water… In between the games with Atlético and Sevilla, came one of the low points of the season… a comprehensive 3-1 drubbing in Pamplona against Osasuna. They are one of the surprise packages of the season. Valencia’s most recent away day was a trip to Barcelona where they clawed out a victory at El Prat/Cornella against Espanyol after being a goal down. A converted penalty by Marc Roca on the half hour mark was nullified by Parejo’s penalty twenty minutes from time. Valencia took ascendency from this point on and were rewarded with the full three points when Maxi Gomez connected with a tantalizing Rodrigo cross, to fire a bullet header past the Espanyol keeper with just ten minutes remaining. On the Champions League front, Valencia were playing catch up with Chelsea and Ajax after round three. Chelsea won in Amsterdam to put both Ajax and the team from London on six points each. Valencia should have joined them on the same number of points but a last gasp equalizer by Ikoné in the sixth
minute of injury time in Northern France gave Lille a share of the spoils, to leave Los Che two points behind in third spot. The fourth round of matches brought the French to the Mestalla. With typical Gallic flair and poise, they posed a major threat to a sluggish Valencia early on and took a first half lead when Parejo dithered on the ball and was tackled just inside the opponents’ half. The ball ricocheted back towards his own goal, creating a defencesplitting pass the Valencia captain would have been proud of in the other direction. Victor Osimhen then outpaced two Valencia defenders and won the one on one with Cillessen, by slotting the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs. Several wonder saves by the Lille keeper kept the score in their favour until, midway through the second half; the home side got a penalty that was hotly disputed by Lille. An age went by before the Valencia skipper was allowed to step up and take the penalty, but when he did he brought his “Panenka” style penalty to the Champions League stage and gave the hosts parity.

From then on, Los Che became irresistible. Wave after wave of attacks led to further goals from Rodrigo, Kondogbia and local boy Ferran Torres as the last ten minutes of play showed the true potential of this young team. The final score of 4-1 did the Valencia’s goal difference a world of good and could be pivotal in the final standings as Chelsea and Ajax played out a crazy 4-4 draw that leaves all three clubs with seven points each, with two games in the group stage remaining. With Chelsea to come to Spain and Valencia to travel to Amsterdam, Los Che have arguably their two most difficult matches to come. If they can replicate the final few minutes of the Lille game on a regular and consistent basis, they are a match for any club side in Europe. Over at Levante UD, they are still celebrating a wonderfully deserved home victory over Barcelona. Despite going a goal behind to a Messi penalty, three second half goals from Campana and Mayoral and Radoja sent the Alboraya faithful home deliriously happy. With a win away in San Sebastián against Real Sociedad the week before, the team from the North of the city are currently equal on points with Valencia. Fans already have the Valencia derby pencilled in their diaries when the two teams will play at the ‘Estadi Ciutat de València,’ which will be on the weekend of the 7th/8th of December 2019. Much of the Café has been built by us and the hard work has been very often alleviated by the helping hands and the kindest hearts of so many friends. It is a wonderful thing to look around and see in the tiles of the mosaic floor, the tints of the borders and frescos, the papiermâché leaves of the roses winding around the baroque lamp, and in many many secret corners, some sweat, some tears and above all laughing, heartwarming
memories. Over the years we’ve tried to combine the art of drink with Art itself. And with TOLERANCE. We’ve camped it up, we’ve cooled it down, we’ve been glamorous, we’ve been deep, we’ve courted the refined and we’ve indulged our baser instincts …jazz, opera, fashion, burlesque, poetry, history, tertulias, tango, drag, and lots and lots of cocktails have kept us alive. We love the risqué, but whatever we do, we try not to lose our sense of elegance, and above all our sense of humour. And we beg you to keep yours.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH BAPTISTE BAILLY TRIO
BAPTISTE BAILLY TRIO EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW Tell us something about your musical background and experiences… Baptiste Bailly: I started music when I was 8 years old. I started playing drums and it’s only much later that I discovered the piano, when I was about 15 years old. I remember going one day with my parents to see a world music concert near my house as a child. The leader of the band was Roland Rakotondrainibe also known as ‘Nono’, a saxophonist from Madagascar who lived near Lyon in those days. He had a really wild presence on stage, something very organic with a lot of positive energy. It is when I left this concert that I asked my parents if I could have drum classes. I used to play on my father’s accordion and his drums... and I also enjoyed spending time playing on instruments with my older sister. But after this concert I understood that I had to study to really enjoy myself. It’s only many years later that I became interested in the piano and it was again an awakening. I love it and I loved the drums but I associated the latter with school and studying a lot. I taught myself the piano as we had a keyboard at home. Again, I began to play as a child with my sister and began to compose compositions, mostly songs in French. Then, when I was 18, I started composing my first instrumental pieces influenced by Article © 2019 24/7 Valencia
the jazz-fusion music that I was listening to at that time. This included The Pat Metheny Group, Yes, Rush, Trilok Gurtu, Sixun and Weather Report. From the age of 18, I was studying musicology and at the same time I was at the Conservatory of Jazz at Saint Etienne. Three years later, I graduated with honours for both subjects and the certainty that I wanted to live from music. I went then to Dijon to obtain a superior title of pedagogy, teaching classes at the Conservatory as a way of funding my musical projects. During the 3 years at Dijon I went twice to Spain…to Barcelona and then Valencia as an Erasmus student. I finished my studies in 2016 and since then I have never taught, I have only played. I discovered in Spain this wild energy again that had so excited me as a child listening to Nono, and I formed some very strong musical relationships with people with whom I still play and that includes double bassist Ales Cesarini and percussionist David Gadea, of course. How is Valencia for live music? Valencia is a city with a limited circuit with not so many musicians but some incredible artists. I arrived wanting to play jazz but I found much more than that…with really open musicians that don’t limit
themselves to one genre of music. To live well from music in Valencia you have to leave the city and be involved with projects outside. There is a lack of a subsidized scene in Valencia but, as a whole, funding for music is lacking in Spain. In that sense, France is a wonderful country for funding musical projects properly. However, at the same time, the Valencian music circuit has something approaching a family in the relationship between musicians, which allows them to integrate very quickly and feasibly with little gigs, jam sessions and playing in some clubs. Unfortunately, there is a lack of a music circuit for bigger projects. Tell us a little about each track on your new album, ‘Pensión Almayer’. La Ultima Luz de la Lluvia is the title of an impressionist painting. This painting inspired me musically as a narrative work set to music. It is a piece notable for its descriptive mood and the structure of this instrumental does indeed tell a story. Three Lands was like writing a study of music. I was studying flamenco and transcribing Diego Amador when I wrote this piece. The first part has something to do with a bulería but the second part returns to my way of writing, more melodic, with irregular bars supporting the changes in the melody. I always love playing the final part of this piece. It’s like a group improvisation, looking for textures and landscapes... it’s a moment of delicate, collective improvisation. Piano Vache is a song that refers directly to the culture of the French Valse (Waltz). As a child, my father played a lot of “Musette” dance music from France and our house is full of books of old waltzes. This is a composition that respects the traditional structure and also the classic melodies of the genre. I contribute something new to the experience of playing something in this style with a Mediterranean percussionist, creating flamboyant colours along with the sound of the piano. Indeed, much of this style of music has always been played by the accordion or by the musicians of ‘Jazz Manouche’ on guitar. The title of this

What is jazz for you? A very difficult question… to define what jazz is today is Pensión Almayer is also the title of the album. It is inspired something that is complicated to explain. For me, jazz could be by the book ‘Océano mar’ by Alessandro Barrico. Inside this summed up as any form of musical expression that uses and book there are seven characters in the ‘Pension Almyaer’, a values improvisation as a language. I would say the focus is on the me with the inspiration for this song. The musical aspects here composition, the sound of the band, to respect a spirit of the have a lot to do with Poulenc... one of my favorite composers... “Canción” and of the PIÑON ;) I recommend you read ‘Océano mar’ and listen to “Trois mouvements perpétuels” by Francis Poulenc. What are your musical influences? I listen to a lot of jazz, and in particular the jazz of now, followed La Calme Après la Tempête is an old composition from my closely by what comes out of the ECM label, for example. Whenever What are your plans with this project? I’ve had a new group, I play it because it’s great for improvising We have already presented the album in Cordoba, Ibi (Alicante), as a band. It’s a composition with a very positive energy. At the Barcelona, Valencia and Italy. We will be playing in Alcoy and end of the version of the album there is a magnificent solo by Alzira during the winter of 2020. We will go to France next David Gadea... spring. Templo del Piñon is dedicated to Ales Cesarini and his philosophy of the “Piñon” that I share and now defend. This energy that is generated by the sheer repetitive groove of the music, this state is called Piñon that he describes as both tribal & spiritual.
