INTERVIEW

LENGUAS VIVAS

of my old friends from my first year here are still here and I’ve made some new ones too.

Why did you enrol in Spanish classes?

EOGHAN RYAN What are you doing in Valencia? I came here in 2005 with the idea of staying for a few months before taking a job in Japan. I settled very quickly and made some great friends so I put Asia on hold and stayed for a year and a half. In 2006 I decided to go to Korea but in the back of my mind I knew I’d be back. After Korea I moved Belfast for a year to do a Masters at Queens University and then moved back to Valencia in June. Things have been going very well, a lot

During my first stint here, I picked up a lot of Spanish but never really studied it properly so coming back I was conscious that I wanted to improve my level so I could integrate better here. When I was here the first time, I lived and worked almost exclusively in the Englishspeaking community but now I’m better equipped to make Spanish friends and live more in the Spanish world.

Why Lenguas Vivas? Lenguas Vivas was recommended to me by a friend and I must say that I’m really happy with the academy. My teacher Jesús... aka ‘Brian’ ... is really good and there is a great atmosphere around the place.

What are your plans for the future? Who knows what the future will bring, but for now my future is here. Valencia feels like home.

How would you describe the classes? The classes are very interactive. There is a focus on grammar which is important at the B2/Intermediate level but we do a lot of stuff in context, too, which helps a lot.

That’s right. One of Valencia’s many advantages is the generous amount of sunshine it gets throughout the year. Whilst Northern Europe spends most of the time drudging through the seasons & praying for good weather, Valencians are truly blessed with a feel-good climate. It’s a fine reason for why so many people find it hard to leave this part of the world. Talking of good blessings, 24/ 7 Valencia is now in its tenth year. That makes it the oldest monthly guide to Valencia! Visitors will be interested to know that ‘24/7 Valencia’ is the only guide to Valencia recommended by all the local, national and international media. That includes The Guardian Unlimited, The Times, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, El País, Levante, Business Traveller Magazine and many more! 24/7 Valencia is also the only English speaking guide to Valencia whose editor and team actually live in the city of Valencia… Again and again, we have been told that “24/7 Valencia is a guide that is loved by the locals, followed by the expat community and enjoyed by visitors”. In this colourful February edition, we have a report on the America’s Cup by sailing expert Mike O’Neill as well as our highly

popular Valencia football article by season ticket holder Mark Hulton. Looking at recent Valencian and Spanish history, we have a report on the failed coup d’état of 1981, which resulted in tanks patrolling the streets of Valencia as democracy hung in the balance. In Clubland, DJ Barry Eaton gives us the lowdown on what’s happening in Valencia and we have a photographic report on the gritty ‘Barrio Chino’. If you’re looking for a good value meal with live jazz, check out our restaurant of the month piece on Paparazzi by Tim Birch. He is also the editor of our sister website www.thisisvalencia.com. Combining forces and going from strength to strength, 24/7 Valencia now has its own website (www.247valencia.com) where you can read the entire magazine on-line each and every month. We wish all of our readers the very best for 2010. It is going to be a good year. As a wise person once said … if you look for the good, you will find the good. ‘I need to laugh, and when the sun is out I’ve got something I can laugh about’

See you next month! 24/7 Valencia team

Tejero - February 23, 1981

TANKS FOR THE MEMORY

For those of us living in Spain today democracy is a given and pretty much unmoveable. The dark, dull days of dictatorship seem a long way off. However, if some dangerously deluded bright sparks had got their way on 23 February 1981, things might have been a whole lot different and at the centre of all the madness was our fair city of Valencia. At 18.00h that evening, Guardia Civil Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero (half Charlie Chaplin, half Tom Selleck in a silly hat) took a military bus to the Spanish Parliament in Madrid and stormed the place with a group of armed men. The whole thing was captured by cameras following daily parliamentary business. The would-be rebels failed to notice this for at least forty-five minutes until they turned the cameras off. Even then they left the sound running so the whole thing was broadcast over the radio

by Cadena SER. Many feared an early end for Spain’s newly born democracy. Everybody knew a coup of this kind was a possibility. The ghost of the far right had far from disappeared. Some figures in the military felt increasingly disgruntled at the way their power was systematically being dismantled and numerous terrorist attacks on various high-ranking military figures had done nothing to improve their mood. Tejero and his men pranced about the parliament as only moustachioed Spanish military men can. They waved their guns around, fired shots into the air and shouted obscenities in a manly fashion at the astonished deputies (including the most famous “coño” in Spanish broadcasting history). It remained to be seen, however, how much support the attack would receive. Even some of Tejero’s men were only now realising what they were letting themselves in for and, according

King Juan Carlos

to testimonies from the staff of the parliamentary bar, they set about trying to drink the place dry. It quickly became obvious that in the country as a whole the would-be coup had virtually no support at all. That is, of course, with the apparent exception of Valencia. At the Royal Palace General Armada, the supposed brains behind the operation, was desperately trying to see the King to gain royal sanction for the coup, which was seen as essential in order to gain widespread support from the rest of the military hierarchy. With or without it, he planned to ring round all the leading generals in Spain directly from the Palace implying he had Juan Carlos’ support. He was refused entrance by General Fernández Campos of the King’s household who, smelling a rat, told him the King did not want to speak to him. He then rushed to the parliament

Tanks in Valencia

where Tejero also refused to let him in accusing him of failing in his mission and being a traitor to the cause. At which point he decided he’d had enough and skulked off home. While in the rest of the country nothing much at all happened, there was a dramatic turn of events in Valencia. Capitán General Jaime Milans del Bosch, an old Francoist crackpot and Civil War veteran, got so excited he couldn’t wait for Armada’s telephone call. He imposed martial law in the city, told Valencians to stay in their homes and in a frenzy of militaristic ecstasy sent tanks and armed men from the División Maestrazgo based in Bétera onto the city’s streets. He took control of all bridges, the port and airport and sent tanks to stand guard over all public buildings. At first confusion reigned. The first communiqués in Valencia stated that the troops were there in order to protect democracy from attack. Many of the troops (mostly military service conscripts) assumed this was true or were told they were on manoeuvres. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to them, however, to ask themselves quite how they were going to protect democracy sitting in a tank in front of a pub in Plaza Cánovas. It wasn’t long before people realised that something more sinister was afoot. Was this the return of the dictatorship or, worse still, the start of a second Civil War? Valencians who were around at the time remember how eerily quiet and empty the city seemed, the bars, restaurants and cinemas closed, the streets deserted. The only thing breaking the silence was the unnerving sound of the tanks on the

Jaime Milans del Bosch

Gran Vía and Avenida del Puerto and the helicopters coming in and out of the heliport near what is now the Palau de la Música. Legend has it that the starlings, which normally nest impervious to the noise of the constant traffic of the Gran Vía, were driven away by the cacophony of the tanks. People tell of frantically hiding or destroying any left-wing literature that there might be in the house, others of the all-too-real concern they felt wondering what kind of country they would wake up to. Some stood up to Milans del Bosch from the start. Although the Capitán General had forbidden any meetings of more than three people, the then-mayor of the city, Ricard Pérez Casado, stayed in session with his councillors all night with all the lights on in the windows of the Ayuntamiento as a show of defiance.

Some Valencians have described the day after the coup as being a bit like the day after the Cremà in Fallas. Everybody went to work, the city was calm and back to normal with very little to indicate that the previous night’s events had ever happened at all. The coup had been a complete and utter failure and, if anything, it helped to hasten and cement the establishment of Spanish democracy. For many Spaniards the spectre of military dictatorship was finally laid to rest. As one Valencian put it, “the whole thing left me with a feeling of shame coupled with indignation that a group of seditious, grey, tawdry men would try to take over power against the wishes of the people. Fortunately it all amounted to nothing but a black joke, an illusion, but at other times and in other parts of the world the story has been tragically different”.

Slowly but surely, however, people started to realise that the whole thing was just a badly organised botch job perpetrated by a few rather pathetic lunatics. For a few hours a small Madrid division had taken control of TV stations, but Televisión Española was soon broadcasting again, relaying the events as they unfolded. People in Valencia were trapped in their homes but kept themselves informed and in touch with friends and family by phone. At 1.00h in the morning the King appeared on television addressing the nation. He denounced the coup and gave his full support to Spanish democracy, the most useful thing he would ever do in his entire life. The tanks were retired and Milans del Bosch was officially relieved of his duties. The following morning Tejero and his men gave themselves up and the sad, sorry drama was over.

Within months of the attempted coup, the Socialist PSOE party was elected to govern the country. Spain rejoined the international community through NATO and the European Union and any thought of a return to military government passed into the pages of history. Thirty people including the three stooges, Milans del Bosch, Tejero and Armada were arrested and imprisoned. Milans del Bosch died shortly after leaving prison, Armada now spends his time cultivating orchids in his isolated villa in Galicia and Tejero has taken up oil painting and writes the occasional bitter letter to the local papers.

FOOD

Stupid Cupid February! The blissful month of peace and quiet, after the shenanigans of the silly season have finally settled down, and the depth of winter has a thaw in sight. It is my favourite time of the year for many things, but one definite is dining out. Why? Because nobody else does! It’s the perfect time for romantic suppers and cosy lunches - whilst it’s still cool enough to eat inside during the day, before our mass migration to the terraces. So what better time of year for Valentine’s Day? After all, it is the month in Spain that affords some quiet reflection, some time alone or with loved ones, before the onslaught of Las Fallas, after the crazy Christmas period, and probably the only month of respite before another endless summer soaks up all our savings and spare time. And so what if you’re not into it. Don’t be so, so jaded! It really doesn’t matter whether you like it or not, whether you’re the type that buys into it, whether you’re the type that runs from it, whether you’re the type that judges your lover’s love by it – who cares?! Take it for what it is; just a day for a nice meal, good wine and lots of chocolate – there’s no need to empty your bank account and there’s also no need to carry on with some sort of spurned defiance, that’s ugly - get over it! It’s just a day. Have fun, or avoid it and be quiet! Or, just do as I do and have it as a day to bake a cake and eat it all yourself perfect! This year I’ve made one of Jamie Oliver’s cakes – ta Jamie! Typically Jamie, it looks effortless, is gorgeous and farmer’s market-ish, and tastes great. I was in Australia during January this year so being summer when I made it, it is covered in cherries (very Valentine’s Day for southern hemisphere types, but not so much in our northern climes) but don’t worry, there are plenty of alternatives to festoon the top of your creation with. Head to some of Valencia’s to-die-for chocolatiers - there’s Nautté on C/Caballeros, 7 behind Plaza de la Virgen

and Xocoa on C/San Vicente Martír, 7 leading towards the Ayuntamiento from Plaza de la Reina. Choose any of your favourite chocolates and dump them on top – some of those delicious glacé orange slices dipped in dark chocolate would suit nicely – anything you like will do! Naturally, of course, you must finish it with a diamond! Ha! Just winding you up! Alright, here’s what you need:

Jamie’s Chocolate Cherry Cake that Erica makes on Valentine’s Day • 200gm of your favourite dark chocolate (at least 70%) • 150gm unsalted butter • 50gm ground almonds • 100gm self-raising flour (harina de levadura) • 4 large eggs • 100gm caster sugar • 3 tbsp cherry jam or marmalade depending on what you top it with • Fresh cherries/glacé oranges/fruits or chocolates to serve with

appear quite creamy and frothy. Fold this mixture into the chocolate mixture. Line a 20cm baking tin (round is best for this one) and grease the sides well if you’re not using a springform pan. Pour or spoon the batter into this and bake for 20-25 minutes, it should appear cooked and set but still slightly soft in the centre. Allow to cool for 5 minutes or so in the tin and then invert onto a wire rack to cool more. Spread with cherry jam or marmalade while still warm and top with fruit. If you’re going to ice it with chocolate icing or whichever flavour you choose, wait until it has cooled completely. Great! Enjoy! See you next month for Paella and Las Fallas, and until then, muchos besos for you especially for Valentine’s Day!! Mmmmmmwwwwwaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!! Professional Chef Erica Choate

Preheat your oven to 180ºC. Roughly chop up the chocolate and butter and, if you have a glass bowl that fits into a small saucepan, put some water in the saucepan and the bowl on top and melt the butter and chocolate together in this. If you haven’t got anything like that... on gentle heat in a small saucepan, melt the butter first, then stir in the chocolate and keep the heat right down, as low as possible. As the chocolate starts to melt, remove it from the heat and continue stirring until it has all melted. Next, once the melted chocolate mixture has cooled slightly, stir in the ground almonds and flour until well combined. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs together with the sugar for about 5 minutes, it will BUZZING IRISH PUB

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

Mike McKoy

PAPAR A Z Z I Wednesday night, after quite a few hours buying this and that in the sales on C/ Colón, we staggered through an unusually cold Valencia carrying our bargains to meet our dinner companions A & L at Paparazzi, an attractive Italian eatery on C/ Baja in the atmospheric barrio del Carmen. Wednesday night is jazz night and as we took our seats the evening’s ace jazz guitarist Mike McKoy was setting up.

The restaurant is modern - all black & white, bare brick walls showing the lovely Valencia ceilings and, unlike many Valencia restaurants, good ambient lighting. What is it with so many restaurants here, with megawatts of light? We are eating, not performing on stage! There is also some interesting shelving set into the bare brickwork carrying a great selection of cleverly lit bottles. One can choose from the normal menu, but the 10€ evening meal offered daily proffers a nice selection of homemade Italian cuisine and appears to be a bargain on paper. We were in Bargain Hunter mode so plumped for that to properly round off our (pretty exhausting) sale shopping day. Our waitress was very helpful and described the food very well. We ordered a bottle of the house white and a bottle of the excellent El Miracle red and in the interests of this article we decided to share a couple of snacks while

we made our choices- well, we can’t tell you what it’s like if we don’t try, can we? First was a bowl of lovely homemade crunchy crisps and two dips, a chilli tomato and a blue cheesy one. The other was a very tasty mushroom dish with a mozzarella, pepper and cream sauceat 2.50€ and 3.50€ each; a lovely and economical start to the meal. And then our starters arrived, a very large tasty salad with chicken, dried tomatoes, basil oil and four cheeses. A ‘Provetta al horno’ was a mix of cheeses baked in a ramekin and accompanied by a confit of cranberries (arándanos) and crispy toasts. For our main courses, two of us had the Tortellini with mushrooms and cream (setas y nata), L having had it on a previous visit and found it truly mouthwatering! It was again mouth-watering, always nice to find the same dish as good on second visit. D had ‘Flautines de pollo, a tortilla generously filled with chicken and topped with a slightly spicy tomato sauce. I plumped for delicately sliced Carpaccio of beef (ternero), which was a light but delicious main choice. We really need not have had prestarters (though they were very good), the portions are generous and with the lovely garlicky toasts as well, we were all very satisfied.

By now the restaurant was nicely filling up, an interesting crowd, quite young and many were couples. Mike McKoy’s jazz and bossa nova was pleasantly playing in the background, not too loud to spoil any dinner conversation, and very nice to listen to. As always we asked for a little selection of deserts, the cheesecake was good and not too sweet and the chocolate tart light and delicious. We finished with some choices from their tea menu, a blue, a red and the green. All in all, a very good value evening, lovely food, nice atmosphere, charming staff, and some good jazz on a Wednesday to help the evening on. The restaurant has a lovely room at the back that one can book for small groups or private dining. Raquel, the charming and friendly owner and the talented chef, is a busy lady, who not only runs Paparazzi but has a bar/ restaurant/cafe in Ruzafa called Les Portes. Paparazzi is open Monday to Saturday evenings from 21.00h. With the evening menu at 10€ and a selection of good wine choices for around 12€, this is a great value restaurant in the heart of the old centre. TRADITIONAL PUBS

ST. PATRICK’S

It’s easy to find an Irish pub in Valencia but St. Patrick’s is one of the longestrunning and best-known. Set at the end of the Gran Vía Marques del Turia next to Plaza Cánovas, this vast pub is open seven days a week and always bursting with life and a great mix of cosmopolitan people. Not only do they offer every beer and lager under the sun, free Wifi, stag and hen parties, two of their own football teams, a staff of various nationalities, huge plasma TV screens that show every football and rugby match that is played, a pool table, a terrace in the sun, great music and a really friendly crowd, but they also have an offer called the Fidelity Cup - if you drink five drinks, or five pints, you get the sixth free! That sounds good to me, that is, if I remember to order my sixth drink by that time! They don’t serve food but they do have lots of nibbles like crisps and olives to munch Article & photo © 2010 24/7Valencia

on with your drinks. The big chalkboard outside has all the timetables for the football and rugby matches planned that week, the whole of the 6 Nations rugby tournament will be shown, and if it’s not written on the board, the lovely waitresses and waiters will give you any information you need. There is no particular type of person that goes to Saint Patrick’s, it is a completely mixed bunch. You can find anything from hoo-raa Spanish lawyers finishing a hard day off with a pint or a crowd of Erasmus students chugging beer to a group of English teachers discussing the weekend over a few drinks! And if you want to practice English or Spanish there is always someone at the bar happy to chat to you and help you with whatever you are learning! If you fancy a quick drink, or a relaxed evening in a cosy atmosphere, St. Patrick’s is definitely your choice! Enjoy! St. Patrick’s Gran Vía del Marqués del Turia, 69 ( Zona Cánovas )

VALENCIA MUSIC This is a good month for music in Valencia, because not only are we getting the Arctic Monkeys for free at MTV Winter on Feb 13 at the City of Arts and Sciences, the venue El Loco is back in action. On top of that we are getting a brand new live venue in the Blasco Ibáñez area, the Sala Woody on Av. Menéndez y Pelayo, 25. However, there is another event worth mentioning, the anniversary of Valencia’s newest and most underground record label, Malatesta Records.

everyone. Emma Get Wild are a folk rock band that skip from Nashvilletainted Americana to more Anglo-folk a la Fairport Convention, complete with a Sandy Denny–esque lead singer. The sound, however, never strays from the contemporary and will impress anyone who is a fan of Wilco.

At a time when most record labels are suffering from the downloading revolution, Malatesta is thriving; it’s released six albums by local bands across the guitar music genres, and in four different languages. The secret? Where it’s not new to see bands release their albums on their own record label, Malatesta has gone a step further and involves a collective of bands who are running, releasing and distributing each others’ albums. It’s been running for a year and has national and some international distribution for its bands. That is a lot in barely twelve months of life! And what does this anniversary have to offer? Throughout February the label will be running a series of events including a party, concerts in bars, libraries, metro stations (!) and ending in a marathon concert involving all six bands on March 26 at El Loco.

AMERICA’S CUP IN VALENCIA Photo of Alinghi ©2010 George Johns/Alinghi

The 33rd America’s Cup - Let me try to explain.........

protest? Why has it become such an issue now?

The 33rd America’s Cup Match has been delayed so many times it is hard for the serious players, let alone the spectator, to understand the latest reasons. So let me try to explain:

Tom Ehman of GGYC says: “......... the 33rd Match is not a normal regatta. It is not even a normal America’s Cup. It is a ‘Deed of Gift Match’ in which the clear wording of the Cup’s ruling document must be adhered to by both teams.”

A. Alinghi 5 (the defender) has sails which were produced on a mould in America, then shipped to Switzerland to be glued together and finished. B. GGYC (Golden Gate Yacht Club, home club of challenger BMW Oracle) says the whole boat, including sails, must be ‘constructed’ in the country of origin, i.e. Switzerland, and has taken the matter to court. C. SNG (Société Nautique de Genève, home club of Alinghi) says that if Alinghi 5’s sails are banned, Alinghi will forfeit the series rather than race and then find they are disqualified. “We have been clear: If BMW Oracle succeeds in disqualifying the defender’s sails then there will be no match,” Fred Meyer said. “Russell Coutts (BMW Oracle skipper) will have won the America’s Cup for Larry Ellison without sailing.” D. Everything else is just ‘smoke and mirrors’. No other legal issues are involved. So why have BMW Oracle raised the question of sails, when they know that American-made sails were used by almost all teams in the 32nd America’s Cup event without any complaint or

This statement suggests that the use of American sails in previous Cup events was a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between all the teams involved. Given the bad blood that exists between these two teams, it is clear that agreement or compromise is simply not possible at this late stage. It is also nearly certain that the Supreme Court will not rule on this case until after the series has begun. Unless someone ‘blinks first’ racing will go ahead on February 8, weather permitting. What happens after the ‘grudge match’ has been settled, and one team has ‘won’ the America’s Cup? It seems quite likely that the whole show will end up back in court. Why? Because the two teams have failed to reach agreement on so many points up to now, it seems very probable that one or the other will find a reason (genuine or spurious, depending upon your viewpoint) to protest the whole event. The fact is they have to go racing on February 8 just to satisfy the New York Supreme Court that they were acting in accordance with the Court’s ruling: If you are going to race, the race must start no later than 10 months after the Court ruled that you should! It will still be a thrilling spectacle and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness

VALENCIA FOOTBALL result that would later ultimately cost the Villarreal manager, Valverde, his job. So, there we were, nine from nine and on a roll and, lo and behold, yet again the team hit a bad patch. A terrible performance against lowly Tenerife ended in a 0-0 draw, Valencia once again paying the price for overconfidence at what they perceive to be weaker opposition. In all honesty, the Canarians deserved the three points but the Ché keeper, the ‘youngster’ César Sánchez, was inspired.

ALTIBAJOS It’s been a while since I’ve had to put pen to paper (figuratively speaking) and talk about our beloved Valencia Club de Fútbol. However, very little has changed. The club seems to have finally quelled the continuous upheavals within the boardroom and on the pitch. And yet just as the Chés seem to be getting a run of results together, then the wheels come off. On the whole, results have been quite positive throughout the Christmas period. In December the ‘blanc i negres’ came away with a 1-2 victory from San Mamés, home of Athletic Bilbao, which is no mean feat in itself. Goals from (who else?) Villa and a snorter from Mathieu earned Valencia a somewhat fortuitous three points and a morale boost for their next encounter against Real Madrid. Unfortunately the ‘merengues’ were just too good, Higuaín especially, scoring a brace and showing Florentino Pérez that he doesn’t need to spend any more silly money looking for a striker, Madrid have a classy footballer in the FrancoArgentinean. Even though Valencia came back twice, Madrid’s class and will to win was just too strong for the Valencia defence and all us anti-Madridistas had to sulk all the way home and turn off the TV and radio for the next three days. The final match before the Christmas break was against Deportivo La Coruña and a 0-0 draw was a fair result as both teams looked out of sorts and more worryingly

for the Valencia supporters was the fact that the team seemed to be heading once again for one of its ‘altibajos’.

At the halfway stage of the season, Valencia were firmly seated in third position with an upcoming fixture against fellow Champions League hopefuls Sevilla on the horizon. If VCF could get a win in Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán they would be nine points clear of their Andalusian rivals, while a loss would cut the gap to three.

Then refreshed from the ten-day break, they started to put a little run together. First game up was against Espanyol, who drove down the A-7 to Valencia in a bus, drove straight through the gates of Mestalla and parked it in front of their goals. An infuriating game was snatched at the death thanks to a great cross from Joaquín and a great header from out-offavour-Serb giant, Nikola Zigić. The lanky forward does not seem to figure in Dick Emery’s plans but he always seems to come up trumps when the chips are down. Is he really that bad, Mister Emery?

Valencia had more possession and were maybe unlucky with a couple of refereeing decisions but at the end of the 90 minutes, Sevilla emerged 2-1 victors and questions were asked about Emery’s tactics yet again. Anyone who watches Valencia on a regular basis knows that if the team play both Marchena and Albelda in the middle of the pitch then they struggle to create chances and, coupled to the fact that with Mathieu’s injury, the left flank also fails to push on, that means that Valencia’s supremely skilled attacking trio of Mata, Villa and Silva are starved of the ball.

Next to Xerez where, on paper at least, Valencia were going to run out easy victors. Following a goal from Mata after ten minutes, many (myself included) waited for the proverbial floodgates to open. Xerez had other ideas, beating Valencia at their own game and snatching an equaliser on the counterattack. Further goals from Villa and Marchena ended the plucky Xerez’s fight but not before they had really given the Chés a run for their money.

It took the manager an hour to realise his mistake but it was too little and too late. His odd tactics will not have done much to endear him to Valencia President, Manuel Llorente, who has still to confirm if Emery will continue next year or not. The Valencia supporters are divided over whether the club should renew his contract whilst the players seem to favour the young manager’s continuity. Emery’s future will probably depend on qualification for next year’s Champions League, if he should fall short then he would surely be shown ‘la puerta’ but methinks he’ll guide us through into an automatic qualifying position.

Then onto the local derby against Villarreal, which promised to be a feisty affair as usual. However, Villarreal’s star seems to be somewhat on the wane and, after Valencia went 2-0 up after 20 minutes and were playing against ten men, the ‘submarino amarillo’ had their work cut out just to make a game of it. Valencia eventually ran out 4-1 victors, a

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 and that team adopts the right mentality. All too often this season Valencia have failed to maintain concentration and have paid the price, not only in the league but also in the Copa del Rey when after going 2-0 up against Deportivo La Coruña, they took their foot off the pedal and allowed the Galicians to come back and take the tie. As far as the Europa League goes, we are into the next round and will play Club Brugge away in Belgium and the week after back here in Mestalla. A victory over the Flemish team would put Valencia into the last sixteen and bring in some wellneeded cash for the depleted coffers. Manuel Llorente has said that work will begin again on the stadium, but as yet ‘nada de nada’. In his defence, VCF had been left in a disastrous state and we should be thankful that things seem to have been stabilised by the appointment of the experienced Llorente. Behind the scenes, the club are working

to bring in fresh faces for next season. At Christmas Valencia signed Argentinean forward Alejandro ‘Chori’ Domínguez from Russian champions Rubin Kazan on a free. Back in old mother Russia Chori had been putting the goals away on a regular basis and his signature was somewhat of a coup. It seems that Fernando Gómez has been told that he has little or no money to play with and rumours abound that in the summer Valencia will sign a couple more players on free transfers. The first is Portuguese international defender Ricardo Costa, who at 29 years old is not one for the future whilst the other signing certainly is. He goes by the name of Sofiane Feghouli and at 20 years old is being dubbed the new Zidane, probably due to the fact that he plays football and is of Algerian descent. After watching various videos of the player, he looks like the new Jason Scotland (of Wigan) as he sends shots aplenty into the crowd without bothering the keeper.

Asier del Horno has been loaned to Valladolid where he probably won’t play either and Manuel Fernandes was being shipped out to Inter Milan until they said he was carrying an injury and so he’s back in Mestalla to watch the games from the stands because Emery just doesn’t rate him. Personally I’d love to see Fernandes and Banega play together in the middle of the pitch but the manager just won’t wear him. Mark Hulton For football calendar see listings

CLUBLAND January is a tough month! You’re skint following Xmas and New Year (and if you’re Spanish Three Kings as well), you have been coerced into a New Year’s Resolution (that normally involves abstaining from something) or have decided, for some unknown reason, to take a month detoxing from the only things that will keep you sane through the coldest and most boring month of the year. Surely none of this makes any sense? Anyway, good news, February has arrived and whether psychological or otherwise (I’m pretty sure that it isn’t the detox), our peckers go up, our wallets feel a little fatter and any bad feelings (as a result of the above) are a distant memory. So celebrate the start of the fun part of the year with a month on the tiles and as always, both the underground and mainstream are ready to provide some excitement, all based around the dance floor. This Clubland page will take the lid off what will be the best clubs and parties to attend through February. We kick off with Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111). In no uncertain terms, Miniclub has the best sound system in the city. Showcasing underground house DJs from all over Europe is difficult enough for the big clubs, but it is almost impossible for such an intimate venue. Miniclub somehow make it possible with the likes of Funk D’Void, Stuart Patterson, Matt Flores and Andrew Grant all passing through to grace the DJ booth. This month will see more of the best local and international talent on show. My highlights are Saturday the 6th with Daniel Kyo, a DJ and producer from Valencia who has gained notoriety for producing some of the best deep house on the planet and putting out incredible work on the best labels around. On Friday the 26th, Iranzo Lasia is also originally from Valencia but having moved to Berlin at 19, he has grown through the local scene, worked with some of the best underground labels around and plays extensively around Europe. Those of you who are not attracted by the notion of house music all night long can venture into the freestyle room at the back of the venue. This room also pulls in some great DJs and lets them go in any direction they want. Expect the unexpected with breaks, indie, rock and roll, classics, disco, funk and anything else the DJs decide to pick out of their very deep record boxes! Running from Thursday night until Monday morning, if only every weekend was a long one! www.myspace.com/miniclubvlc LA3 (C/ Padre Porta, 2) is one of the newest

clubs about. It seems clubs in Valencia will change their name and re-brand on a regular basis in order to take an exciting new direction or, in some cases, try to pull the wool over our eyes, add a new name and a lick of paint in order to bring back punters that may have ventured elsewhere. LA3, formerly The Mill, is one such venue that has come to the fore. Since its revamp, it slaps you in the face with three rooms of nu-disco, indie-electronica, electroclash plus live performances, underground beats, showcases and just about anything else they can cram into a night’s worth of debauchery! With international DJs including London’s JoJo De Freq passing through on a regular basis, the programme is always exciting, creative and fun. I have a strong suspicion this change of venue name will not be a flash in the pan and I am 100% sure I will find myself bouncing around the club on a regular basis. http://groovelives.com/la3/ Heading down towards the beach and with the biggest international crowd in Valencia, Soul (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 225) continues to dominate the R&B market in the city every Saturday. Soul head honcho DJ Cosy O is joined by international guests and residents playing hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, reggaeton and funky classics. Running weekly at Gandhara, this party rocks the foundations of this venue and are leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else on the more commercial side of the urban market. www.soulvalencia.com One of the best atmospheres in Valencia clubland is Excuse Me! (C/ dels Tomasos, 14). Having moved away from their home where Miniclub now resides to a sumptuous new home in Ruzafa, they deliver two rooms of indie, punk, soul, space disco, cosmic house, nu-disco, Italo, groove electro and anything else that takes the DJs’ fancy. The club hosts some serious DJ talent with Dioni Sánchez and Nacho Marco both monthly residents alongside head honcho Sais. This month special guests include Chelis, Jesse Hipster and my personal stand-out night on 13 February with Loud E. With FREE entry before 2.00h every week, this is well worth a visit with a very cool crowd to boot! www.myspace.com/excusemeclub The Barrio del Carmen is an area all about the party, with an array of clubs that are open seven nights a week giving night owls somewhere to go when the rest of us are tucked up in bed. Two of the best venues are Music Box (C/ Pintor Zariñena, 6) and Radio City (C/ Santa Teresa, 19). With resident and guest DJs plus live artists passing through both venues, you can hear an array of top music from Latin to flamenco, breaks to electro, funk and pop to indie. With such a high number of quality nights

over the month ahead, it seems impossible to pick the highlights, so my advice is to go direct to their MySpace pages where you can check out the month’s line up for yourself! www.myspace.com/themusicboxclub & www. radiocityvalencia.com The club Estrella Damm Lounge ( Marina Real Juan Carlos I ) located in the port has had a brilliant reputation over the years past. Now moved to a new site but still in the port, they’re back after last summer in the wilderness and I have no doubt stronger than ever. Keeping their cards close to their chest on the programme of DJs and artists that will pass through the venue over the months ahead, rest assured the quality will be of the highest level and Estrella Damm Lounge will be a must-visit venue for anyone living in or visiting Valencia. With an opening party on 5 February and the venue open for the whole following week for the America’s Cup, the club will be focussing on weekends only after this week-long showcase event. Keep an eye on their site for future information. http://www.estrelladammlounge.com/ To finish on a positive note, Bastardo Management have created a three day kneesup that will raise money for the ongoing humanitarian work in Haiti, via Red Cross Valencia. Recruiting the cream of the DJ scene, all of whom are offering their time and full support; they will take over three nights and venues to put on a mini-festival to see you partying until you drop. Starting Thursday 25 February at Music Box, taking in The Face on the 26th and with Saturday night’s venue to be confirmed, never has there been a better excuse to get out, live it up, and know you are doing something positive for those in need. For more information, check Facebook and search for Valencia Festival DJs por Haiti. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=31 0477518792&ref=mf&v=info Until next time, check out the full 24/7 listings for more detail and other venues that I have not had the space to include. But then again, I’ve been known to say that about Lily Allen, Peaches and Pixie Geldof and even the Queen, so that could mean anything. Lolita and I have been endlessly speculating about the possibility of her coming to our marvellous City, but then she is a busy gal. We’ll have to keep an eye on her Twitter (http://twitter.com/ ALEXA_CHUNG) in hope of a tweet alluding to a possible visit!

WOMAN

Why, hello again readers! Happy New Year! I’ve missed you all, two months since we last met feels like far too long and I’m looking forward to our monthly meetings once again this year! I saw in 2010 with a few selected friends, not in our usual all-out style, just an intimate meal at home with lots and lots of bubbly. It was delightful, and so lovely to have another long weekend after Christmas fell so nicely on a Friday. I’m not going to bore you with all the ways I’ve decided to improve my life. In fact, I’ve reached the point in my life where I just don’t set myself New Year’s resolutions any more. After all, what is the point when by the 15th of January I’ve already broken all my newly founded rules anyway! And when February kicks in I can barely even remember what I imagined giving up/taking up/taking on. And here we are again! February is one of my favourite months of the year. Not only is it my birthday month, but mine actually is just one of a long string of endless birthdays, all merging into one as everyone gets together to celebrate on average three times a weekend (that is, if you’re lucky enough to start your weekend on a Thursday night. Not in my case.). It’s even better than Christmas, and old familiar faces from school, work, Uni and high school greet each other with the perfect excuse to have a good time.

In the past, I’ve always held a joint do with two of my best school friends, but as one of them is travelling around eastern Europe and with the two of us left having more friends of our own than in common any more, I’ve decided to branch out on my own. Plus, it’s quite a big birthday (don’t even bother asking - a lady never reveals her age!) and I want to celebrate in style. Lolita, my trusty partner-in-crime and flatmate, and I are opening the doors to our beautiful beloved flat to about 50 people the Friday night of my birthday. Hopefully, old grumpy chops from next door won’t bang on the wall, and will let us sip on Mojitos, nibble on sushi, hoisin duck wings and mini spring rolls, and have at least a little bit of a boogie in peace though obviously not quiet, it’s my birthday, after all! The main event this month which has already made my 2010 is the fact that Arctic Monkeys will be headlining MTV Winter at the City of Arts and Sciences on the 13th. An unconditional fan of the Sheffield four, when they were confirmed I nearly wet myself with excitement. And if I get a chance to see the lead singer’s ultrastylish MTV VJ girlfriend, the beautiful Alexa Chung, even if it is from a major distance, then I could sit inside the rest of the year as happy as Larry. There is not a single Chung outfit that I would not wear, she has almost as much as a penchant for nautical style stripes,

The other good thing about February is that it’s one short month, and will bring us closer to March even faster. I am crossing fingers, toes, hair, eyes, legs and arms in the hope that my lovely boss at The Bank will finally publish our holidays for the year and give me the week of Las Fallas off. It’s a brilliant time of year for Valencians, residents here and visitors alike, but after more than 10 years sticking around and in the last few having to go out to work and missing out on the fun, I am a little tired of all the fireworks, parties and papier-mâché and would like to escape. Off to Budapest, to hook up with my aforementioned traveller buddy, to be more specific. There are about eight of us with a constant eye on the cheap flight websites trying to snag a brilliant deal and kill two birds with one stone - getting away from the mayhem of the festival and going on a group holiday together! With a bit of luck, a 15-hour stopover in London might be on the cards, and I might get to squeeze in a meal and some drinkies with some friends who live in the City before heading home, by which time Valencia should be clean, shiny and without a trace of the thousands of people that will by then have traipsed through day and night, night and day. Can’t wait.

Cycling around Xàbia and Cabo de la Nao Xàbia (Jávea) and the surrounding countryside and coast is one of the prettiest areas in the Valencia region. Leaving the village, you can head towards Arenal beach, perfect for a quick dip in the sea with its fine sand and clear water – although there are plenty of tourists who will be doing the same in July and August. But you’ll come to more tranquil places later on where you can relax and enjoy the sea. For example, if you cycle south, close to the seaside you’ll find some little beaches hidden between the rocks. At the end of Arenal beach follow the road that runs to Cabo de la Nao, which runs gently uphill through dense woodland. This road overlooks cliffs with fantastic views over the sea. There is a path to your left along this road that leads down to sea level, to the cala del Portixol, a delightfully pretty cove. As soon as you start the descent, you can see the island that protects the little bay, with its stony beach and crystal clear waters. To the right, on the beach, is the restaurant La Barraca, a great place to eat arroz a banda, cooked in a large casserole and made with excellent, freshly caught seafood. Taking the beach as the central point, there are paths to the right and left along the coast where you can enjoy the unspoilt fauna of the sea, clearly visible as you cycle because of the amazing

transparency of the water. Going back to the original road, before descending to sea level, turn left towards the Cabo de la Nao. This is another pretty road cutting through pines, and the views from the headland (el cabo) are worth checking out. Go back down the road that led to the Cape, and then turn towards the left to descend again, this time to visit the cove called the cala de la Granadella. The descent runs towards the sea along a narrow, curvy path and its beauty is jaw dropping. On both sides of the path there is a dense, rich growth of pines, bushes, shrubs and flowers. And the beauty of the descent prepares you for this stunning little cove, flanked by two enormous mountains, with round stones for its beach and enticing water. Having enjoyed Granadella, it’s time to turn back because there’s no way to get directly from here to the next destination, Benitatxell (Benitachell). Go back to where you started the route towards el Cabo de Nao, and there you’ll find a junction that signposts Benitatxell to the left. Here the countryside changes completely, and the pine trees give way to fruit trees – mainly almond, olive and carob trees. This is a reasonably quiet road. And so eventually you come to the village Benitatxell… but as soon as you hit the village, turn out of it to its left. Be ready to climb up this mountain… it’s quite hard! This road leads you to the cumbres de Benitatxell, where we’ll start the next leg of the route in the next issue of 24/7.
