BACCO D.O.C. The festive season has arrived and it is time to eat, drink and be merry. Bacco D.O.C. is a distinctive and authentic Italian restaurant in the centre of the historic Barrio del Carmen. Run by a welcoming Italian family and with Italian chefs, this has become one of the most popular restaurants in all of Valencia…and for all of the right reasons. It is original, good fun and it is baroque! It has a stunning cave-like interior of “bejewelled and mirrored” stalagmites and stalactites, tasteful lighting, lots of nooks and crannies and three floors.

They have a superb value afternoon menu for 10 euros during the week and 12 euros at the weekends. Expect to pay around 30 euros in the evening. The salads are imaginative and well-presented including a succulent Insalata di Rucola e Parmigiano, authentic Caprese de Bufala and tasty Insalata Bacco to choose from. Lovers of Spanish wine can enjoy a fair selection of tintos including Muga Crianza (Rioja) and Plaerdemavida Reserva (Utiel-Requena).

So it’s no surprise that this restaurant is highly popular with romantic couples looking for something original yet tasty and genuine. It’s also a first choice for international visitors, the arts crowd and work groups. How about the food? Our international food critic found their Tagliatelle Funghi Porcini “delightful” and their Carpaccio and Aubergine Parmigiano “absolutely delicious”.

LA INDIANA

La Indiana has been a firm staple on the Valencia nightlife scene for eight years now, having just celebrated their anniversary last month with a bang. Located on C/ San Vicente, just off Plaza de España, it is easy to get to from all over the City and is one of the most stylish and sleek clubs in Valencia. La Indiana has had a major revamp this year and although their infamous sharks are no longer in the building, they have definitely not lost their bite. In fact, when they reopened this September for a new season, there were still queues to get in all the way round the block at well past 4.30 in the morning. A well-dressed, young and fun-loving crowd are pulled in through the doors from Thursdays to Sundays to their three rooms spread out over 1500m2

Their carta is extensive with a wide selection of pizzas including chicken, bacon, cheese and tropical fruit specialities. Their authentic

playing house, soulful house and Spanish and international pop with a cutting edge sound system and state-of-the-art lasers. Offering an exclusive VIP area, group bookings, and even a valet service, they make sure all their guests have a brilliant time and want to come back for more, week after week. With the services they offer to businesses, they boast Dolce & Gabbana, Mercedes Benz, Nintendo and even the Valencia football team amongst their client list. For the general public, Thursdays is Elephunk, which is pop, electro house and R&B and is aimed at a younger, more student-based crowd- well, they don’t have to get up to work on Friday mornings, do they?! Friday nights are Cosmopolitan at La Indiana, bringing together the international and Erasmus crowds in the city, and on Saturdays the punters tend to be

pastas include Spaghetti alle Vongole, Bucatini all’ Amatriciana, Tagliatelle Paglia e Fieno and Gnocchi Rucola e Speck. Meat dishes including Tagliata, Filetto alla Griglia, Ossobuco alla Milanese, and Scaloppine in Salsa are amongst the recommended. If you prefer a white wine to go with your fish dishes like Orata or Branzino, we recommend their Señorío de Sobral (Albariño). Lovers of Italian wine can enjoy their Lambrusco. The 24/7 Valencia team has always found the atmosphere welcoming and often international, especially at the weekends. Now that the holidays have arrived, it’s time to relax, have fun and enjoy some genuine Italian cuisine in heady surroundings. We recommend you take a trip to one of the most original Italian restaurants in Spain. Just one minute’s walk from the Mercado Central! Bacco D.O.C. just a little bit older still. Look out in bars and pubs for flyers as they offer discounts before certain times of the night on their usual prices (including one drink) of 15€ on Thursdays and Fridays and 18€ on Saturdays. You can even print the flyers off their website - www. laindiana.com! The gorgeous bar Carioca in Juan Llorens is owned by the same group, and is a must for some pre-clubbing drinks, too! La Indiana opens from Thursday to Saturday every weekend from 24.00h to 7.30h, so get your dancing shoes on and down there to C/ San Vicente for a cocktail served from behind a glowing bar, a shimmy on a top notch dance floor, and a fantastic night out surrounded by elegant and beautiful people.

VALENCIA’S

TURRÓN

Turrón is the Valencia Community’s great contribution to Christmas in Spain. This year, just like every other year, there will be a little, crunchy bit of Valencia Yuletide cheer on every Spanish Christmas table. The true homelands of turrón are the towns of Alicante and Xixona (Jijona), where the sweet has been made since 1531 and even today many of the best traditional turrones come from there.

Traditionally there are two main types. ‘El Duro’ (the hard one) from Alicante, which is essentially a hard, dry mash of almonds, honey and sugar moulded into a bar, is not to be confused with ‘El Blando’ (the soft one) from Xixona, a soft, dry mash of almonds, honey and sugar moulded into a bar. For years the only other alternative to this great array of Valencian sweets were ‘polvorones’ (the powdery ones) which,

ingeniously, are a powdery, dry mash of almonds, honey and sugar moulded into an oval shape. Despite the incredible variety on offer, some other options started to appear in the last thirty years or so, notably chocolate turrón.

What at any other time of year would simply be called a bar of chocolate is wrapped in shiny paper, made into a similar size and shape as the traditional turrón and Bob’s your uncle, a new ‘traditional’ Christmas sweet is born. Nowadays, chocolate turrón easily outnumbers the traditional stuff on any supermarket shelf and comes in any number of ‘traditional’ Spanish flavours such as kiwi fruit, Irish coffee and rum and raisin. However, El Duro y El Blando are still the inescapable mainstay of every festive table, hamper or Christmas box and, like mince pies in England, whether you like them or not, it just wouldn’t be Christmas without them.

Turrón, in most Valencian homes, has become part of the Christmas decorations (on a stainless steel tray with a paper doily between the crib and the festive bottle of Ponche Caballero) and is an essential ingredient of the festive season. All Valencia families have small marks on their kitchen tables where ‘Uncle Vicente’ once attacked the Duro turrón with a hammer and chisel on Christmas Eve in a vain attempt, after one too many mistelas, to break it up into chewable pieces. And if it doesn’t break your table, it might just break your teeth. These days El Duro is made considerably thinner (they usually pack a double layer into the box so it looks the same size) and even slightly softer but if you’ve ever tried the real traditional stuff, you’ll know what I mean. Turrón adverts have also become a part of the Christmas scene and the same ones, only slightly updated, are repeated year after year. Every Spaniard knows the tune to “Vuelve a Casa por Navidad” from the El Almendro advert and the slightly less subtle “Queremos turrón, turrón, turrón” which advertises Antiu Xixona. Every year ‘Turrones 1880’ declares itself, in a sort of Spanish Jeremy Clarkson voice, as “the most expensive turrón in the world” which, considering that nowhere else in the world makes turrón, is a bit like somebody advertising their product

as the most expensive Bakewell tart in the world. It still shifts off the shelves in shedloads, however, and is a must in the Corte Inglés executive ‘cesta’.

If there was no scimitar at hand they could also be used as a weapon. One well-aimed bar of El Duro could knock a Christian out cold from ten paces.

Turrón is even exported around the world, especially to South America. However, the biggest customers are those lovers of all things Spanish, the Japanese, who presumably like to chew on a bit of turrón while dancing flamenco and playing the “Concierto de Aranjuez” on their Casio keyboards. Bizarrely enough, after Christmas some of the unsold turrón, which for reasons of sell-by date would not be available for the following year, finds itself on the shelves of the Poundlands and Home Bargains of northern English provincial towns, sold as ‘Spanish nougat’ or ‘Spanish chocolate bars’ for the Easter market.

Xixona legend has a different take on the sweet’s origins. So the story goes that a Moorish king married a Viking princess. His princess missed her homeland and was ‘pining for the fjords’ so to speak. The king decided to cover the hillsides with almond trees which, when in blossom, would give the impression of the snow-capped mountains of her Scandinavian home. They were left with the problem of what to do with all the excess almonds and naturally decided to make a hygienically wrapped Christmas sweet that all Spaniards could enjoy. Nice story but in reality there is no record of turrón in Xixona until 1531. After that, the sweet quickly became popular and was a favourite amongst the recipes of Phillip II’s personal cook, Antonio Martínez.

Turrón is said to have its origins in ancient Greece where sweets made from honey and almonds were prepared for athletes competing in the Olympic Games as a sort of ancient world energy bar. The Moors liked the idea and brought the sweet to Spain in the eighth century. According to the Cordobés writer Averroes, writing in 1149, Moorish soldiers were issued something like turrón, shaped into easily portable bars (hence their shape today) to keep them going during long marches.

turrón are roasted or ‘torrats’. Wherever it comes from, try a bit of turrón this Christmas. After all that eating and drinking you may need a bit of ancient energy bar keep you going. Queremos turrón, turrón, turrón! Enjoy responsibly and don’t break your teeth. David Rhead and José Marín

Like everything from Valencia, the Catalans have also tried to claim turrón as their own. They say the name comes from Barcelona confectioner Bernat Torró. However, that story is about as believable as a Viking princess coming all the way to Alicante to marry a Moorish king. The name predates Torró and is most likely to originate from the fact that the almonds in photos KAIKO copyright © 2009 - 2010 24/7 Valencia - Article ©2009/210 24/7Valencia

FOOD

Tinsel Turkey and Thoughts for Twenty Ten

It’s that time of year again when I always end up with that John Lennon song stuck in my head... “Another year over, a new one just begun”.... great song, but slightly annoying nonetheless. And before you get mad at me for slagging off JL, it’s not the song but the melancholy and somewhat introspective mood it puts me in. That’s what I dislike. This is the time of year for celebrating and eating too much, and frankly, enjoying oneself in a purely hedonistic fashion. But, and it’s a big but, it is also the time for taking a good hard look at yourself, at others, at the world, where you’re going, what you’re doing, where we’re headed. So I guess the lines of that Lennon song remind me to do that, and I always do and always will, but it’s right when I just wanna say, “Bottoms up, ya grubs - let’s get pished!” Where on earth am I going with that? Well, it’s a big year for us this year. 2009. Copenhagen is coming up, by the time

you’re reading this, dear reader, perhaps we will even know if our world leaders have had the courage to take some bold steps and make some big decisions. Courage. I think that’s my big lesson for the year. I’m not going to bore you with the details of my learning that lesson, and I don’t imagine you care, and if I didn’t have that blasted song in my head I wouldn’t even be telling you! But it’s a good time to take heed of everything that’s made its transit through our lives. Growing up in Australia, Christmas has always been hot and acquainted with beaches, barbecues, shellfish (please don’t say it!), a few too many coldies and drunk aunts and uncles getting burnt and wandering around with little else on but paper hats from the Christmas crackers - I’m still in therapy. Now, after my years in Spain, the US, Scotland and back to Spain again, I really do think Christmas is meant to be cold, it just makes sense in a winter wonderland. This year, however, I’m heading back to the heat. Our first family Christmas together in 10 years and my sister and I are dragging our delightful Englishmen over to an island in Malaysia to seek out Ma and Pa on their wee boat. I can’t wait, we have decided to leave traditional fare behind and plunge headfirst into gluts of seafood and wine - I can’t complain. Dad has filled the bilge with enough wine to sink a ship, and I hope I’m not tempting fate there, and Mumsey has been busy scoping out the best places to pop the corks. No tinsel and turkey for us this year. For you though, my fellow Valencianos, I thought I might give you some inspiration for leftovers. Everyone knows what to do with the ham and the turkey; it’s wading through what’s left in the post-fog of too much eggnog that gets us into strife. So here’s a dish to throw together with the drumsticks, after everyone has eaten the breast, it’s lovely and simple and really really tasty.

Christmas Drum Beat • 1 bunch baby beetroots and 1 turkey drumstick per person • Your favourite hot mustard • 1 red onion • 1 brown onion • 4 cloves of garlic BUZZING IRISH PUB

• 2 red peppers • 4 tomatoes • 1 handful of Kalamata olives • 1 bunch Swiss chard/Silver beet • 1 log (250gm) goat’s cheese (chèvre) • 1 package spaghetti

Preheat your oven to 180ºC. Get out a large roasting pan and sprinkle it with a little olive oil or butter. Chop the onions into a rough dice and finely dice the garlic. Slice the peppers and discard the seeds and roughly dice this as well. Chop the tomatoes. Throw all this in the pan and scatter the olives on top. Now, smother the drumsticks with mustard and lay these on top of the veggies. Roast in the middle of the oven for 40 minutes. Slice the stems off the Swiss chard and chop up the leaves, remove the roasting pan from the oven and, putting the drumsticks to one side, stir the chard through the vegetables. Place the drumsticks back on top and roast for a further 5-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and crumble the goat’s cheese through the mix. Meanwhile put a large pot of water on the stove and bring to a boil. Cook the spaghetti and drain it. To serve, put a portion of spaghetti into each bowl and some spoonfuls of the roasted vegetables on top of this and crown each with a drumstick. Voilà! Leftovers - eat your heart out - this is delicious and nutritious and goes perfectly with a great big glass of vino tinto! Everyone, have a great Christmas this year. I wish you all the most happiest of occasions and can’t wait to catch up with you all again in the New Year. OMG, it’ll be Valentine’s Day the next time I write - time is flying already! Feliz Navidad y buen provecho! Erica Choate

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH / TRADITIONAL PUBS

FINNEGAN’S We were having a discussion with friends from around Europe about what we missed most about living here in Valencia. For most, food was at the top of the list. Not food but food from home, English, Irish, German, Swiss - wherever anyone hailed from. If you hail from the UK and you particularly miss good pub food, then Finnegan’s is the place for you.

Finnegan’s Irish Pub is in Plaza de la Reina at the very heart of the city’s historic centre and is well known to sports lovers for their screenings of big matches on their large screen televisions as well as their fine choice of beers, including Guinness and Murphy’s. It is now the proud owner of a new English chef and a great new lunch menu which offers fish and chips, cottage pie, steak and chips, jacket potatoes with a choice of fillings, scampi and chips and a large selection of sandwiches, among other things. In the interest of a well-rounded and informed review, our little lunch party of three purposely all chose different things for each course: O chose the (enormous) house mixed salad, D the fish chowder and me the smoked salmon salad for starters. Both the salads were huge, the mixed salad consisting of good leaf, red onion, red pepper, corn, carrot, tomato, cucumber and a generous portion of a creamy coleslaw and a few slices of smoked fish. It was so large a salad that

we were worried O would never make it to the main course. The chowder was delicious, a hearty bowl soup filled with mixed fish, gambas and mussels and accompanied by saltine crackers. The generous portion of excellent Irish smoked salmon was served on a large bed of mixed salad and brown bread and butter. After this little lot, we were all pretty full but the lovely Marian, our server, wouldn’t believe us and soon arrived with our main courses. One enormous crunchy crispy battered cod and chips for D, a tender steak topped with sautéed onions and mushrooms for O with a side salad and a large separate dish of what we call at home ‘cheezy squeezy pots’, sliced potatoes baked in cream and cheese, lovely!

raspberry cheese cake and granny’s apple pie, not what you would expect but delicious all the same, a sponge affair, apple-y and very light in texture. Finnegan’s no longer offer a ‘menú del día’ (it is no longer obligatory in Spain). But prices are very reasonable and, as the portion sizes are so large, a main course would be enough to satisfy most appetites. Based on that assumption, you are looking at 10-15€ per person. General prices are as follows: sandwiches 5.50€ - 7.50€, jacket potatoes from 6.50€, fish and chips 9.50€ and steak 12.50€. We were served a nice Viña Real Rioja Crianza. Peter, the charming owner of Finnegan’s, has run this excellent pub for many years and I understand it is nothing unusual to find him passing a few sausages and chips around to his football fans during the televised games! Finnegan’s offers food at lunchtime, 12.00h till 16.00h, either in the pub or on the lovely Plaza de la Reina terraza, watching the world go by.

My main dish was a lasagne, the special of the day, served with chips and very tasty it was, too! Joe, the new chef, told us he is planning weekly specials from around the globe, so you might get offered a paella or a curry when you visit!

From the beginning of December, they will be serving Christmas lunch: turkey and all the trimmings for 20€ including a beer or a glass of wine, good value and I am sure a quite delicious way of celebrating the festive season with your friends!

It was a splendid lunch and we were all feeling very full. After a little pleading, Marian, who clearly thought we were a bit eccentric, carefully selected five dessert ‘tasters’ on a large plate for us to share. All were delightful and certainly tasted homemade! We sampled the chocolate cake, the mint and choc ice cream tart,

CONFETTIS

A World of Magical Party Treats

When Olivia moved here five years ago with her two little boys, she realised there was a huge gap in the Valencia market. Searching high and low to no avail for the traditional Mexican piñatas for her baby boys’ birthdays, she realised she could make them. And so she did. Open from April this year, Confettis is just a second away from the Torres de Quart, set on the corner of C/ Turia and thanks to its bright pink exterior, you just can’t miss it! Full of handmade piñatas, garlands, little jokes and sweets from the UK, English and French children’s books and party crockery, this is heaven for any one that has children, loves children or feels Article & photo ©2009/2010 24/7Valencia

a bit like a child themselves sometimes. Olivia’s piñatas are handmade to order and cost from as little as 10 euros to 60 euros. They come full to the brim with candy and are made with love and care in her workshop just over her shop. Not only does this talented lady make piñatas to brighten your parties, she’ll also make you beautiful paper garlands, masks, babygrows with funny messages, sell you beautiful French knitted dummy covers, children’s cooking aprons, party decorations, beautiful books, kitsch presents for any age and many, many other things. And the best news? She doesn’t only make children’s piñatas, she has also started making adult-themed ones. You name it, the shape, the colour, the design, and she’ll have it ready for you within a week. Confettis also organise children’s birthday parties with a twist. This is a new venture for Olivia but is thriving and more and more popular around Valencia. Just the feel of the shop with its glitzy and magical vibe makes you want to be little again and inspires you to hold the most special and interesting party ever held. It’s the perfect

place to buy a gift, order a party, chat to Olivia and hear her fascinating life story, buy huge, beautifully framed kitsch posters and greeting cards painted by hand by an English illustrator who recently moved to Valencia. I’ll definitely be back soon to buy some treasures. It’s worth a visit. INTERVIEW WITH A SPANISH TEACHER

LENGUAS VIVAS

I play football and enjoy going out with my friends for lunch, dinner (I love our food) or a night out. I think I don’t need to tell you what going out in Valencia is like.

How would you describe your classes?

Jesús, tell us about yourself I’m a 27-year-old Spanish language teacher who has lived most of my life in the city of his birth, Valencia. I also lived abroad in England for about a year when I was studying English. I have to say that I loved the time I spent there and try to go and visit my friends there as much as possible. I teach different languages at Lenguas Vivas, but when I’m not working

First of all, I’d like to say that the atmosphere in class is great, since it is formed by young people from different countries with the same goal, learning Spanish. The classes are normally entertaining and varied. We have a digital board at our disposal as well, a tool that allows me to make the class a lot more dynamic.

What do you think the benefits of learning Spanish are? Well, as a lover of languages, learning

a language is more a pleasure than a benefit; just the fact of communicating in different languages, meeting new people and reading books in the original language are benefits of great value for me. Learning Spanish will give you the opportunity to get to know the people better, to understand our traditions and, all in all, to enjoy your stay much more, no matter how long it is!

VALENCIA FOOTBALL an unaccustomed run out which seemed to pay dividends as the Chés were 2-0 up after 16 minutes due to goals from Marchena and Zigić. The twelve people that were in Mestalla rubbed their hands with glee in anticipation of how many more goals they were going to see. In fact they saw two more, unfortunately they were both for the opposition and Valencia prayed for the full time whistle as they hung on for dear life. It didn’t help that they were down to ten men from the 42nd minute onwards after the erratic Alexis was sent off for two yellow cards and the team had to thank out-of-favour goalkeeper Moya for keeping them in the competition.

A Christmas Wish In all honesty, between you and me, these last few weeks have been very difficult on a personal level. I’ve tried to put football out of my mind but to no avail. The world has seemed a cruel place, empty, devoid and lonely for one such as I, and yet I have turned a corner. So, you know who you are, can stop reminding me that I come from Wigan. I know we lost 9-1, I know Tottenham’s Defoe scored five flukes and by God, I know that I am a Wigan fan and still proud of it. If messages have not been returned, texts ignored, I can only say “Sod off!” Anyway, after Saturday’s 1-0 win against Steve Bruce’s Sunderland, I can only say that revenge is a pie best served cold. As for Valencia, November has seen the team undefeated after five games. The downside being that they have won only two matches. The Chés have found it impossible to kill off opponents and have paid the price each time. Example number one was against European minnows, Slavia Prague. After a penalty conversion by Joaquín put the blanc i negres ahead, Maduro scored the goal of his life from twenty yards out (I still think he was trying to clear it). So there

they were 2-0 up against the ten men Czechs, game over. The crowd were on the way home as were most of the Prague team. Then Maduro was outjumped at another set piece corner, the underdogs pulled one back, Valencia disappeared and Prague equalised with 8 minutes to go. Valencia threw the proverbial ‘pila de cocina’ but nowt. Egg and face sprang to mind as did vu and déjà. In Valencia’s defence the referee disallowed a perfectly legal goal that would have made it 3-0 but then again they had two or three other opportunities to put the game way out of reach. What the team needed was a solid display in Mestalla in order to bolster confidence and that’s exactly what they did. The visiting Zaragoza side kindly left their defence on the halfway line during the first half and Mata, Villa and Pablo had wrapped up the encounter before the ref’s half time whistle. The Chés were deadly on the counterattack, swift, incisive and decisive and Zaragoza’s manager Marcelino (who was going to be Valencia’s boss before he turned the post down) was found to be tactically inadequate. The Maños scored a consolation goal in the second forty-five but the game was over way before then. The return leg of the Copa del Rey against Alcoyano offered very few worries for VCF, especially after winning the first leg away 0-1. Emery gave a few players

After the midweek scare, Valencia travelled away to the bastion of ‘Los Pajaritos’, home of Osasuna, where if the cold doesn’t get you the home fans will. ‘Nostre Valencia’ played clinically well. Marchena chipped a little through ball that Villa put away in a picaresque style, floating between two defenders and poking the ball away with his other foot. Lovely! The best was yet to follow in the second half after a ball fell to the feet of David Albelda, many in the second tier of the stand behind the keeper ducked in anticipation, others put on crash helmets, but no, David exquisitely chipped the goalie with his left peg! No one could believe it, Albelda himself more than any and Valencia were two to the good. Marchena then struck a quite wonderful half volley to put the match out of Osasuna’s reach, even though the Chés did concede their regular consolation goal to make a bit of a fist of it. The game ended with two Osasuna players sent off and the Navarran crowd living up to their reputation as some bright spark whizzed his butty at the lino and caught him right on the noggin. He’d obviously wanted piquillos with his chistorra and was angry to find out there was, alas, but tomato. Next rivals were Mallorca, a team with the worst away record in the league, unable to score away from home, and guess what they left Mestalla with, a one-all draw. How you may ask? Simple, I reply. Emery does not have the formula to kill off the opposition. The Chés were one nil up with twenty minutes left on the clock and the match should have been out of Mallorca’s grasp way before, but an inspired Dudu Aouate in the Mallorca nets and a less than clinical Valencia © 24/7 Valencia 2009/2010

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 meant that the game was still open. Dick Emery then “went and got it wrong again, Dad” by bringing on Alexis to defend the lead. Goodness knows why he didn’t use the experience of Baraja or Marchena but he didn’t and Bruno gave away an idiotic penalty with five minutes to spare. Emery’s reaction was to bring on giant Serb Nikola Zigić to win the game. Why didn’t he do this earlier, you may ask? I haven’t a clue, reply I, and neither does Emery. So a golden opportunity was lost once

again to close the gap on the leaders. That makes six points in three identical games that Valencia have thrown away at home; six points that would now see them clear leaders at the top of the table. Let’s hope come May time that we don’t need to dwell on those lost chances. December will tell us if VCF go through to the next round of the Europa League as they travel away for a must-win game against Genoa whilst in La Liga they will travel to Bilbao and La Coruña for two exceptionally tricky games. The only

sure fire three points in the bag will be the home fixture against Real Madrid as Maduro, Marchena and Albelda carry on their fine goal striking form. That’s my Christmas wish anyway. Merry Christmas and peace on earth. Amunt. Mark Hulton For football calendar see listings

CLUBLAND The festive season and the end of another year are upon us and we are spoilt for places to go and things to do. The start of new clubs, the anniversary of others and not forgetting the successful ongoing events which I will let you know more about on this page. I hope to cover places to suit all styles of music and events to give you the best coverage for December and January. This month sees Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111) going from strength to strength. This club has been bringing the best underground dance music to Valencia all year. On December 12 AHH… Party presents Paul Childs and Andrew Grant (Barraca Music, Circo Loco) in the main room and Jus Pi & Anita Dynamita smashing it up in the back room with their collection of mash-up rock and indie tunes. The 18th will see DJ Yellow (Ovum, Freerange) from France rocking the main room, and friend to 24/7 Barry Eaton (Valencian Underground) bringing you some smashing disco & funk grooves that always get me there to support! New Year will host DJ Ramón López (Defected, Balearic Soul) and the Cool Brothers. (www. myspace.com/miniclubvlc) Now if you live around the Plaza Honduras area, one bar that has always pushed upfront music is Flow (Plaza Honduras, 35). They are open Thursdays – Saturdays from midnight until 03.30h. Thursdays are getting popular with the drum & bass following if you are craving for some energy-fuelled music. Street Plan will host their New Year drum & bass event there with Jacky Murda (Chopstick Dubplate) as well as local talents DJ Schepsis & DJ Ohcan. You can also catch me there on Saturday, December 19 on the decks for SUB120 playing my selection of deep and groovy house. (www. myspace.com/flowvalencia) Excuse Me! (C/ dels Tomasos, 14) in Ruzafa has become famous for their unique sound of space disco with some of Valencia’s best DJs and producers dusting off their records such as Nacho Marco on January 5. In December, we see the famous Prins Thomas (Full Pupp) there on the 18th and also DJ Gato from Barcelona on the 11th. Open Fridays and Saturdays until 07.00h. (www.myspace.com/excusemeclub) The guys at Soul Gandhara (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 225, Malvarrosa) are still pushing its great mix of R&B and hip-hop with Cosy O and his team every Saturday until 07.00h. They will also be running their New Year

party there and contact Soul for ticket information. You can also catch Cosy O on Wednesday nights at Rumbo 144, a popular venue for Erasmus students until late, and also Thursday nights for Soul in the City at Vinicius (C/ Bolseria, 11). (www. soulvalencia.com), (www.viniciuspub. com) Smooth (C/Salamanca, 17) in Cánovas is becoming known for its live bands and jazz in Valencia with a very tasteful crowd in a very cool setting on Wednesdays - Saturdays from 23.00h – 03.30h. Wednesdays in December brings a touch of London to Cánovas with the start of Nice @ Smooth with UK DJs and guests. (www. smoothjazzclub.es) Barraca is probably one of Spain’s bestknown clubs from back in the days of the Ruta de Bakalao in the early ‘90s. On Saturday December 5 they celebrate their 44th anniversary from 20.00h until the early hours of Sunday. Three rooms of forwardthinking dance music with such DJs as Edu Imbernon, Samuel Knob and Andrew Grant. If you go to the anniversary party, you will also get free entrance to their Christmas event on December 25! For New Year they will host Uner, Coyu and Edu Imbernon who have been working together to bring out some amazing production over 2009. (www. barracamusic.com) The Groovelives team are busy this December with the opening of Pi (formerly the Mill Club) on December 17. They will offer three rooms with Indielectronica, electro pop, room two will host showcases from labels and promoters across Valencia and the final room offered up for private events. Latex offers a similar music policy and this month sees a resident showcase appearance on December 11 with DJ Fono, Size M and L’Elefant Terrible. Also check out Club 47 (C/ Quart, 47) with their free New Year party spinning disco hits as well as every Thursday nights with Kinki Indie nights. (www.groovelives.com)

events where clients go there dressed to impress over Christmas, New Year and Reyes until late. (www.grupowandu.com), (www.laindiana.com) I hope this will keep you busy with choices over the festive season. Don’t forget the partying carries on with Reyes (Kings Day) on January 5 so it is not over once we see in the New Year! Keep you eyes on all the venues listed here for events running through January and also the 24/7 listings in this edition. To keep up to date with the nightlife in Valencia and my goings-on, subscribe to my new blog where I inform people of things going on that I think are of interest in Valencia. Also subscribe to the iNsound Podcast show that starts in December with guest mix from Miniclub’s Daniel Kyo. All information can be found on www. insoundgroup.com or iTunes search word ‘insound’. See you on the dance floor!! Paul Childs www.insoundgroup.com www.myspace.com/djpaulchilds

C/ Corregeria, 4 96 392 0193 Shopping

Musicbox (C/ Pintor Zariñena, 6) is the choice for a late night venue in Carmen until 07.00h. December brings a great line up of music and catch Paco Plaza, Dwomo DJs and Todotemazos on New Year playing a great mix of music taking you into 2010. (www.myspace.com/themusicboxclub) If you want to dress up for a night out in the centre of town on C/ San Vicente Martír, then my recommendations are to visit the very plush Wandu Palace (C/ San Vicente, 162) and just round the corner is La Indiana (C/ San Vicente, 95). Expect some great theme

WOMAN

Well, folks, I did it! I went for the chop! All my girlfriends said to “Go for it!”, and “Cut it all off!”, and “Be brave!” And the boys said, “No! No way! Don’t even think about it!” So obviously I listened to the girls, because what do boys know anyway, right? I crept out of work early one Thursday and into Tony and Guy’s and had my long auburn locks it took me so many years and so much willpower to grow out, cropped into a short, sexy coiff. And I didn’t even feel the slightest pang of regret as I watched it all fall to the floor. My stylist realised that I am obviously not a long hair person, and created something a bit like Katie Holmes’ bob meets Victoria Beckham’s flicks, back when they were BFFs. It’s gorgeous, hairdressers are geniuses, and even the boys agree. Which I knew they would, of course. I have a long side swept fringe, and my neck is all on show and it’s just what my new blazer with the extra large shoulder pads needed to complete The Look. And then suddenly, just like that, the cold weather briskly arrived one morning and now I have to wear a huge woolly scarf all the time to keep myself from getting tonsillitis. Again. I always get sick this time of year, I think it’s mainly because I like to believe I don’t need much sleep when I do, and because I don’t usually take vitamins or eat enough fruit. This year, however, I have already eaten about five tons of clementines, along with my apple-

a-day de riguer. Every time she pops into Town, my darling mother brings me a huge Father Christmas sack full of fresh produce, mostly her neighbours’ citric fruits, living as they do in the middle of orange groves, but does a slice of lemon in a Gin and Tonic actually count as one of my five pieces of fruit and veg a day, I wonder? As the buildup to Christmas begins, I have to say I am pleased the lights haven’t been switched on quite yet (though by the time this goes to press, I imagine the whole City will be sparkling and glowing on every corner) as when I was in the UK in October, everyone already had holiday fever and it just felt like it was a little bit too soon! Having said that, I do like the rush up to Christmas. A lot. Lolita and I go all out on the decorations at home and make a big deal about putting up the wreath, and turning on the lights. We put Eartha Kitt, Slade, Elton John and even Cliff Richard on the stereo, wrap up in thick snuggly jumpers and socks and take lots of silly pictures for posterity. Well, that, and Facebook. Just the other evening we hosted a dinner party and our friends launched into a huge debate about where we should put the darn tree! This is our first Christmas in this flat, after all, and as it’s where the gang tend to be 90% of the time, I suppose it is critical they take part in the decision, too. It was unanimous - in front of one of the big balcony windows in the lounge, just to the left of the sofa. This means I will be able to see it from my bed, too, should I leave the door open at night, and I am sure it will induce North Pole-related dreams as I slip into slumber over the coming month. I took a trip down to Ikea just recently, with my aforementioned Darling Mother, and that is always enough to make even the most Bah, Humbug! of folks feel festive. We stocked up on all sorts of goodies and gifts! Cutlery, glasses, candles, servilletas - even a bath mat! As Mummy was on the phone, I got sucked in by all the pretty baubles in the Christmas section and wandered off in a daze on my own, only to look down into the trolley I was lazily pushing around to see it was empty. And then to look up to see a very confused man walking up and down the aisles scratching his head and looking for his trolley. i.e., the one I had absentmindedly stolen, lost as I was in my Yuletide fantasy world. Very embarrassed, I left it where it was. I must have made him feel like a complete idiot. How on earth could you lose a trolley!?

While we’re on the subject of Ikea, my favourite scene in the new Zooey Deschanel movie, (500) Days of Summer, who may just be my favourite actress ever (or at least right now) takes place in the showroom bit of the store. She and her date pretend they live in each of the rooms, and of course nothing works, the taps don’t run, the remote doesn’t turn on the TV. This is the kind of thing I think my boyfriend that I am getting for Christmas - I’ve spoken to Santa, it’s all sorted, I’ve been very good all year - and I will do at the weekends in 2010. Great fun! Plus, it’s living together without all the hassle of actually moving in. Perfect. I will unwrap my Christmas Presentslash-New Boyfriend just in time for Lolita and my New Year’s Eve extravaganza! We have this whole avoiding the inevitable disappointment of New Year’s thing down to a fine art now. Party at home, basically the same thing we do every weekend but with a few grapes thrown in at midnight, and it’s a guaranteed brilliant end to a year and welcome to New Beginnings. Just thinking though, it’s probably quite hard to wrap a man, so if Santa wants to give me the bright pink suede pumps from Mango instead, that’s absolutely fine with me. I need some new party shoes and I bet they’d go much better with my new hair... Until February dear readers, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Anita Darling ©2009/2010 24/7Valencia

Leaving Montgó... and Cycling to Xàbia In the last 24/7 issue, we told you about cycling up and around the magical mountain of Montgó in Denía. Following on from here, we lead you to Xàbía (Jávea) and there are two options, the short, hard route or a longer, easier one. Both are equally pretty, in their own ways. First, the hard way. You can get down from the mountain on the Colonia road, taking the Assagador de Santa Lluçia, then the Camí de Gamba until you come to the Camí Vell Alt from Denia to Xàbia. Once you’re on this, cycle until you come to the CV 736, the Denia to Xàbia road that runs along the final length of Montgó, stretching into the sea and turning into the headland, the Cabo de Sant Antoni. It’s a curvy ascent – take it up to the top, and once you’re there it’s worth going up to the cape of the headland along a path that is still a part of the natural park of Montgó. There are amazing views, and with Moorish ruins, too, it’s worth taking some time here to get off your bike and have a little walk around. On the way to the cape, turn right once you pass the recreational area; this little road will take you close to these old towers, with an incredible view above Xàbia and the pretty bay. Afterwards, cycle back down towards Xàbia discovering the incomparable blue bay that skirts the town. With this descent from Montgó, you arrive in the pretty town centre of Xàbia, very close to the church and the high street (Carrer Major).

There is also the other way. From Montgó, go down towards La Pedrera from the Colonia road, and from La Pedrera head towards Denia on the Camí de Coll de Pous. When the road comes to an end, look for the Cami del Saladar that turns into the CV 735, or carretera de La Xara. La Xara is a little village which you’ll come to on your right, and continuing ahead, we will circumvent El Montgó on the Xàbía side. As soon as Xara is behind you, you enter a beautiful part of the journey, with the natural park to your left, in an area totally unspoilt by construction. More classic Mediterranean countryside, with some orange groves to your right, and pines and matorrales, indigenous bushes, to your left. The pines then give way to carob trees and almond trees, with unforgettable views all the way. Further on, on the right, is Jesús Pobre, a small village in the outskirts of the mountain, and the road continues towards Xàbia, now further from the mountain, giving us a different view of Montgó itself. Houses start to pop up along the side of the road, which means you are almost in Xàbia. Once you are in the town, it is worth visiting the Carrer Major and the surrounding streets, the church, and then going towards the sea to have a look at the port with its mixture of fishing boats unloading their catch alongside sailboats, and then yachts, which have their own separate port. Both are protected by the final part of the headland, el Cabo de Sant Antoni, which gives it its special charm. In the next 24/7 issue, we’ll cycle in the south area of Xàbia, discovering new landscapes.
