INTERVIEW

ENGLISH T O W E R

I had been interested in the Spanish language for a while but when we arrived I was a beginner and very much aware of the need to improve so that I could function better here in Spain practically – you know, buying things, meeting Spanish people etc. I had heard of English Tower through friends and decided to give it a go. I haven’t looked back since then and I think I have really improved a lot.

How would you describe the classes? IAIN ARMSTRONG

What are you doing in Valencia? My wife and I decided to move to Spain to experience the culture and learn Spanish, as well as work. I teach English and my wife is a chef. I finished my first novel last year. We have made lots of great friends from all over the world and I recently ran the Valencia Marathon – so we have been really busy since moving here. Why did you enrol in Spanish classes?

The teachers are all very experienced and the focus is mostly on practical skills for the ‘real world’. We do grammar, of course, but the focus is very much on speaking and listening – which I think is really useful and I like this method a lot, because the students are very active in class instead of the old passivity of traditional classes. The classes are a lot of fun.

It’s a lovely place. Plus, as I said earlier, the classes are always very practical and useful. They also have other stuff going on, like film nights, weekend immersion courses and summer courses. I have priced them up compared to other academies and they are one of the most reasonable, too – which is good for me, obviously.

What are your plans for the future? We will stay here for the foreseeable future, I think. Valencia is a great city with loads going on. I would like to take an exam in Spanish at some point. Apart from that, just carry on enjoying life here in Spain. It’s not such a bad old place, is it?

Why English Tower? It has a very friendly, intimate feel – the place has been around for about 17 years or something like that – and the teachers and staff seem almost like friends or family.

Yes. Valencia’s world famous Fallas festival is passionate, loud, irreverent, colourful, creative, controversial and full of fire. To create and to destroy is a very Valencian trait. Respecting traditions yet living for the day is the Mediterranean way. Love it or hate it, Fallas is one of the reasons Valencia is so special. The good news we have for visitors is that you have chosen the right guide to Valencia. Now in its 10th year, 24/7 Valencia is the oldest monthly guide to Valencia and the only guide to Valencia recommended by all of the international media including The Times, Lonely Planet, Time Out, Rough Guide, Let’s Go, Business Traveller Magazine, El País, Footprints, Guardian Unlimited and many more! We are also the only English speaking guide to Valencia whose editor and team actually live in the city of Valencia. In this month’s issue, we have exclusive Fallas photos, a special guide to the festivities and we go straight to the source, interviewing falleros about the festival. For those of you looking to party all night, expert DJ Paul Childs gives you the lowdown of what’s hot on the Valencian club scene. Check out our ‘24/7 Valencia’s party people’ photo collection of clubbers from around town in action! Food lovers are in for a treat this month

with an authentic paella recipe from our professional chef Erica Choate. Our legendary restaurant of the month reviewer, Tim Birch, takes a trip to the upmarket and welcoming ‘Las Lunas’ for a delicious and creative meal. It is a combination of French, Italian & Spanish cuisine in the cosmopolitan Canovas zone. Check out our ample listings for restaurants, clubs, bars, arts, theatre and the packed agenda for club nights and live concerts. Football fans can reflect on the schizophrenic form of Valencia CF via the entertaining and informed Mark Hulton and we have exclusive photos of Valencia’s international stars including David Villa. We dedicate this special edition to a very special person who tragically passed away recently, due to cancer. Carol Pusey was a regular contributor to ‘24/7 Valencia’. She was a highly popular, intelligent, and deeply driven individual. Direct and generous-hearted, she seemed to know everybody and everything that was going on in Valencia. A wonderful teacher and an incisive writer, a great clubber and a good friend. She was a real star. She is deeply missed by us all. This one is for you, Carol…

See you next month!

FALLAS GUIDE 10 a casal yourself, allowing you yourself to become the object of your neighbour’s hatred.

LA MASCLETÀ Are you interested in folklore? Tradition? Big dresses? If you are, stick around. Valencia has all that and more during the celebration known as Las Fallas. Read this and consider yourself armed for the festivities.

For hard-core Valencianos (nearly all of them). City Hall, not wanting to miss out on the fun, holds its own circus of noise every afternoon at 2.00 pm during Fallas. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is stocked with enough firecrackers to blow up a small country, which are then all lit. Loud explosions leading to a crescendo of painful sonic booms typify a good mascletà. Generally lasting five to ten minutes, the experience will leave you with gunpowder and sulphur in your lungs and bleeding ears, but hey, who cares? You’re only young once.

LAS FALLERAS

During the second week of March, you’ll see these large sculptures being set up at practically every street corner. Anything can be represented in a falla; the Ten Commandments, the plight of the crippled, world peace or belly-button lint. These are then ceremoniously burnt (in La Cremà) by proud firemen on the night of March 19.

Watch out! You could be knocked over by one if you’re not paying attention. More than just a big dress, the fallera’s costume is the Ne Plus Ultra of traditional fashion wear. Covered by enough lace, brocade and satin to bury a man (or fallera), these brave women take part in all the city’s festivities. You’ll see them representing their casals by marching in parades, posing for pictures, making paellas on the street and having nervous breakdowns, smiling all the while. Acute observers will make the comparison between the fallera’s hairstyle and a certain science fiction film character, but the similarity ends there. These are Valencian Earth girls, born and bred.

EL CASAL

THE NIGHTLIFE

Think of a friendly neighbourhood association (again, at every street corner) whose main mission, apart from setting up its falla, is to wake you and all your neighbours up at 4.00 am. You’ll finally get back to sleep only to be awakened again by its morning marching band (La Despertà). You can avoid this by joining

A misnomer, actually. The nightlife lasts all day and night for the first three weeks of March. Valencia doesn’t sleep, and if you think you will, you are mistaken. My advice is to do what bar, pub and restaurant employees do; take copious amounts of stimulants and stay awake. There’s no point in sleeping. No point!

So what do the Valencians think of LAS FALLAS ? Daniel Sánchez has been a fallero for twenty years in Falla Seneca-Poeta Mas y Ros, one of the hundreds of smaller neighbourhood fallas dotted around the city. What does Las Fallas mean for you? Fallas for me is a traditional festival where you get the chance to get together and enjoy yourself with your friends and neighbours for four whole days. What do you like most about Las Fallas? The mascletàs, the bigger monuments and enjoying yourself in the casal (home base for members of a falla). And what do you like least? All the roads that are blocked!

Is there anything you would change? Yes, I would make the Cremà (the fiery finale) always on a Monday. That way everyone could enjoy three days of Fallas every year without having to take time off work. Do you have to be a fallero to enjoy Fallas? Of course not. Everybody can enjoy the fireworks, the mascletàs, the music in the verbenas (street parties), the monuments and even the Ofrenda (the offering of flowers to the Virgin). Is the Ofrenda important for you? To be honest, it’s not that important to me personally but I know that for most falleros it is one of the most important parts of Las Fallas.

Do falleros organise anything special during the rest of the year? Oh yes, in our falla we go down to the casal quite often at different times throughout the year for Friday night dinners, lunches together on a Sunday and a few parties and festivals here and there. Do you have any problems with the neighbours? You get a bit of everything, really, from people who complain about every little thing to people who go out of their way to be cooperative although they aren’t falleros. What’s the difference between a smaller falla like yours and one of the big ones? In a big falla, there’s more money to build

twentyfoursevenvalencia 9

bigger monuments and organise bigger and better bands, fireworks and verbenas. But in our falla, there’s a real sense of community where everyone knows everyone and everyone belongs. -------------------------------------------------Laura Ganau is married to a fallero in one of the biggest and most famous fallas, Na Jordana. She has two daughters who are falleras in the same falla. So you are not a fallera yourself? It’s the dressing up I don’t like. I just don’t see myself in the make-up, the hairdo and the big dress but I’ll be at all the parties and you’ll find me in the casal throughout the whole festival. Do you consider it an honour for you to be involved with a falla like Na Jordana? Like many of the fallas in the Carmen, Na Jordana is more than 125 years old and is the oldest falla in the special section. We feel proud of the falla but no more than the falleros of any of the other fallas, right down to the smallest. I suppose you will get visits from people that won’t have visited smaller fallas. Every year we get footballers, bullfighters, actors, singers and politicians popping in throughout the week. Over the years people like Hemingway, Dalí and Ava Gardner have visited the Clot Faller ( The casal of Na Jordana) amongst other international stars. The famous Spanish

singers Alaska and Carmen Sevilla, Joaquín the Valencia football player, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, the Vice President of the government, Lucía Bosé and TV presenter Andreu Buenafuente are all currently paid up members of the falla. What is your favourite part of the festival? My favourite part of Fallas is right at the beginning, the Plantá, the night the monuments are finished off and put in place. All the falleros eat a dinner together to celebrate the opening of the festivities and we help the artists to put the finishing touches to the monument. There’s a flow of people all through the night watching us work and looking at the falla (monument). We stay there all night until the jury comes the next day. -------------------------------------------------Vicente Puig is a born and bred Valencian who has never been a fallero. A Valencian but never a fallero? Like many other Valencians, I really enjoy Fallas but I like to get a general view of the festival, to get around and see everything rather than be stuck in a casal tied to only one falla.

firework displays, throw the bangers, eat the bunyols and dance in the verbenas. In the theatre, if there’s no audience there’s no show. What is the best part of Fallas? My favourite is the mascletà, which is something that is unique to Valencia. I will say, though, that more and more I prefer the mascletàs in the neighbourhoods rather than the one in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. They are set up in the middle of the streets without so many barriers and the people watching from the balconies. You can get much closer. And the worst? Too many streets are closed. There are too many traffic jams and there is not enough public transport. Streets should only be blocked if it is completely necessary. With a little more give-andtake and organisation, everyone would enjoy the festival even more.

But doesn’t that mean you’re not really getting involved? Of course not. Everyone who is in the street becomes an integral part of the festival. We are the ones who watch the

FOOD

Traditional ! I can clearly remember my first real Valencian Paella. A real Paella, not one of those touristy things full of overcooked seafood, red peppers and turmeric, but a real one. A pan of subtle, earthy flavour, with delicious scrapings of crusty rice once you got to the bottom. It was a chicken and rabbit paella, and it is an amusing memory. Trapped (or so I thought) in a bland relationship with a rather unadventurous eater who would definitely not ever eat lamb, let alone rabbit - you can guess he wasn’t British, from the Commonwealth or European - we sat down on a sunny terrace in La Lonja for our first paella. New to Valencia then, I was keen to throw myself with absolute gusto into everything Valencian, and speaking more Spanish then he did, I ordered. I will admit, I didn’t tell him it had rabbit in it, I just said it was chicken. I wanted him to try it, without prejudice or resigning himself to not liking it before even trying it. After some olives and more than one glass of rosé, a wondrous pan arrived at our table and we began to eat; me, trying to conceal my bemusement of what we were eating and noticing him actually enjoying it. I wanted to so much to tell him. Then, I turned a piece of chicken over on my plate to gasp at what I saw! A little tiny tooth...a tiny jaw... a rabbit jaw! Oh my God, I was so grossed out! I was fine with rabbit, but seeing the little jaw was a little unexpected to say the least, and I was totally turned off for that moment. Obviously, he saw me and then wanted to know what was wrong and then he saw the jaw and realised we were eating rabbit. I thought he would push his plate away in disgust - both at me and the rabbit - but he laughed at my plan backfiring on me, which was lucky, but he never eats paella any more. A true paella starts with a reservation, made at least the day before; it takes them a long time to make it. Try any of the restaurants in L’Albufera, about 20 minutes south of the city - this is where paella hails from and it is truly an amazing experience and a great way to spend a Sunday. Otherwise, you could be really adventurous and make mine. You will see plenty of them being cooked in the plazas around town this month during Las Fallas,

cooked traditionally on orange wood, too, they are really one of the most authentic Valencian experiences - you will love it!

pan - you can arrange them nicely in a pattern here if you like, and then scatter the chorizo around.

Paella

Set the temperature of the gas to be just slightly simmering the stock, not too fast or it will cook too quickly and the rice will be ready before the meat, but enough that there are bubbles and things are cooking. Now leave it. Just let it cook gently until almost all the stock is absorbed. Now add the beans you have chosen and the snails if you’re going down that path. The beans should be cooked by the time the rice has absorbed the rest of the stock. Leave it a few minutes longer to cook through and crust the rice on the bottom of the pan this should all take at least 30 minutes if not a little longer.

• 1 chicken, cut into pieces or a drumstick for each person (pollo) • 1 rabbit, cut into pieces (conejo) • 4 chorizo sausages, cut into chunks • 1 bag of snails (caracoles), optional • 500 gm paella rice (arroz Calasparra) • 2 tsp saffron threads • 2L chicken/rabbit stock • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 500 gm fresh fava beans/green beans/peas

Serve the pan straight to the table and allow everyone to eat straight from it, or serve onto plates if you prefer. Lots of vino goes without saying. Buen provecho! Professional Chef Erica Choate

© 2010 24/7Valencia

Get the butcher to cut a whole rabbit into pieces, you can choose if you want to use the head, too! Have a whole chicken cut into pieces, too, or grab a pile of drumsticks. Most importantly, buy a paella pan from the markets and light a fire in the country, or get a gas ring, or put it on a gas flame at home. Add some oil to the pan and get it fairly hot, we want to brown the chicken and rabbit nicely, not burn it. Add all the chicken and rabbit to the pan and allow them to brown on each side before turning them - a good 5-6 minutes each. You will want to cook them at least half way through at this stage, so you can continue to turn and brown them slowly for at least 30 minutes. Add a little flaky salt and pepper while you’re doing this. Once the chicken and rabbit pieces are nearly cooked and are looking nice and brown, add in the chorizo sausages, and brown these also. Once done, turn down the heat and remove all the meat from the pan. Set aside. Pour the rice into the pan in the shape of a cross and add the saffron threads and all the stock. Stir gently to mix the rice and stock and settle it evenly around the pan. Now add the chicken and rabbit pieces back to the BUZZING IRISH PUB

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

LAS LUNAS

It’s been a funny old month; the 33rd America’s Cup came and went with what seemed like more international press than public. The two races it consisted of took place so far out to sea that the only way to get a good view was to watch it on television or online. It was all over in a rather dull flash and it may never come back to Valencia again. America’s Cup 33 was a real shame and such a contrast to the wonderful 32nd America’s Cup. I was there for this latest outing - up at the crack of dawn in the freezing cold the first days to watch the boats go out, only to be sat in the press centre or one of the ‘houses’ of the competing teams waiting for something to happen. Run down with flu, I have really only surfaced this last week. A long haul by any standards, so it was very nice to have a good meal to look forward to at a relatively new restaurant in the Cánovas area of the city, a barrio very much alive with quality international restaurants. Las Lunas is around four months old and is run by the husband-and-wife team of Eric and Bianca, who worked for the Valencia Hilton before setting up this new venture with Chef Gustavo Casello, a Uruguayan of Italian parentage who has cooked all over Europe prior to the Hilton and now here. A Wednesday night in early March is bound to be a quiet night for a restaurant. When we arrived, there were a few people eating and

drinking but it is a largish (and very attractive) room and we had Eric’s almost undivided attention. He started by suggesting a red wine from Cuenca, Finca La Estacada, a meaty wine with a fairly unique taste that both D and I really enjoyed, and good value at 12.50€ a bottle. Then Eric started to bring the food, we let him and Gustavo decide what we should eat. A basket of Pan Catalan of hot doughy bread arrived and first on was an ‘amuse bouche’ of a filo-wrapped prawn dunked in a chupito glass of a spicy tomato sauce. Our starter was a beautifully presented platter at the centre of which was a mountain of mozzarella wrapped in a (very) green tortilla and topped with a rocket salad and surrounded by a moat of green and red (tomato) pesto and succulent dried tomatoes. We loved this dish called ‘raviolón crocante’. It is only in the past couple of years that I have really come to love Risotto, there is nothing quite like a really well-made one and our next course was a great one. A parmesan risotto topped with goat’s cheese and served with a red wine and wild mushroom sauce and adorned, like a Mohican-style comb, with a ‘Crujiente de parmesan’ (a crunchy parmesan wafer). Absolutely delicious, with the flavours complementing each other beautifully. There was still more to come, our main course. When we said we were not sure we could do justice to another course, Eric suggested that we stick to salad the next day! Argentinean steak on a pillow of pureed potatoes with dried tomatoes and a chimichurri salsa (a typical Argentinean sour sauce made from jalapeño peppers, garlic, fresh coriander,

parsley and oregano in vinegar and olive oil). If that weren’t enough, a martini glass filled with truffle oil-drizzled ravioli! Wonderful. The steak was perfectly cooked and the ravioli made a great pairing. We sat and chatted to Eric about the restaurant for a while, unaware that Gustavo was about to sidle up to the table with a stunning ‘postre’. It was a work of art and another little meal in itself! A biscuit basket of fresh bite-sized fruits topped with golden spun sugar and sitting in a red fruit coulee and vanilla ice cream. A wafer-thin white chocolate and orange ‘fan’ and a chocolate sponge shared the plate and the whole thing was a delightful end to an excellent meal. This beautifully presented food is very good value, with the starters from 7-10€, rice dishes priced between 10-12€, the main meat courses between 15-18€ and the desserts between 5-7€. There is a menú on offer each night at 23€ and the weekday lunchtime menú del día is 10€, rising to 15€ at weekends. Las Lunas opens each day at 9:30h and serves really interesting-sounding bocadillos and tapas through the day, so pop in for a drink and a snack to try it out! The soundtrack is often jazzy and it is an upmarket, welcoming and relaxing place to dine. CHILL OUT

MANCINI Mancini is hidden, but once you’ve found it, you can’t miss it. To get there, walk down C/ San Vicente Martír towards Plaza de la Reina and take a right on Plaza Mariano Benlliure. A retro, trendy, large and airy bar and eatery with a smoking area, a large bar and restaurant area. It has an open bar and kitchen and a large sunny terrace. Mancini is open Monday to Saturday for breakfasts, almuerzos and lunches. Why not in the evening, I hear you ask? Because my friends, from 17.00h every day, Mancini can be yours. One of the first places to offer this service in Valencia, you can rent the space out for private parties, art shows, dinners, picks and cocktails, anything you need a space for. You can rent the empty space, you can rent the space with waiters and provide your own food and drink, or you can go the whole hog, and rent the space, the waiters AND the yummy scrummy food that they offer! Article & photos © 2010 24/7Valencia

Original and adventurous finger food, tender food (fork food in English) and cute sweet puddings. Anything from deep fried prawns, carrot chips, little glasses of coconut curry, goats cheese, salmon, fish...I could continue, but I suggest you check it out yourselves. Pop in and ask for the menu and tick off what you want for your party. They also offer a catering service and their motto is Llegamos, montamos, servimos y nos vamos. In English that means, “We arrive, we set up, we serve and we leave” and they will go anywhere. Offices, gardens, parks, houses - you name it, they will do it. Pop in, have a chat with the waiters or ask for Rafa, the friendly boss. Tell them your ideas, and they’ll let you know how little it will set you back and give you ideas on how to make your ideas even better. And if you feel like a normal sit down meal, they offer yummy fresh-filled baguettes (try the tuna, cream cheese and chives), mancinis (little toasts topped with inventive mixtures), fresh and crunchy salads and lots of little picks. Their menu of the day is 9.95€ and includes a fresh salad that they make up every day, a big

warm baguette filled with the filling of the day (the curry chicken is to die for!), a homemade pudding, the cheese cake was heaven on earth, coffee and a drink of your choice. All are served beautifully on big plates with lots of love and care. And if you don’t fancy that much food, have the plate of the day, which can be anything that they decide in the morning. Or pop in for a warm coffee and a croissant, or a chilled gin and tonic and nibbles, and a chat with the lovely owner Rafa who is always up for a natter and advice on Valencia.

EMOTIONAL ACUPUNCTURE If you genuinely desire positive change in your life and use Emotional Acupuncture, you will be able to witness dramatically quick benefits occurring on an emotional and physical level.

writing on our walls’, and make us believe certain things are true about the world we live in. This has also become true of our attitudes towards diseases, including our own.

Sounds too good to be true?

This negativity can be likened to looking at a forest that has had all its trees poisoned, and these poisoned trees are Emotional Negativity. Certain areas could be originally linked to one poisoned tree from a specific past event that happened when one was three years old, for example, or maybe the origin is vague. Anyway, what happens is that that tree affects the next tree, and the next…

Well this technique has helped many thousands of people so far. It has a success rate of around 80% and works in a quick, painless, and gentle manner. No drugs, no herbs, no needles! Emotional Acupuncture is used to treat all types of physical ailments, such as arthritis, and all types of emotional issues, such as stress, anger, obsession and jealousy. I specialise in treating Depression, Chronic Fatigue, and Back and Neck pain. I personally suffered from the above for approximately 20 - 30 years. I found that most people, including loved ones, simply did not understand Chronic Fatigue and Depression as being illnesses, and would often ridicule them by saying, “They are just problems in the mind”! They are actually problems to do with the mind and body. That is why Emotional Acupuncture treats them so well, as it deals with the body and mind. After being introduced to Emotional Acupuncture, my fatigue and depression disappeared within a few days, as if they had never existed. This was to my obvious relief! I had spent so much money and time in the past on herbs, psychologists, diets, exercises, special stretches…..20 - 30 years of suffering and well over 20,000 pounds spent! Well, this is why I am so delighted to offer my services to people who are suffering. I can genuinely help you quickly, painlessly, and in a cost-effective way. In trying to understand the efficacy of Emotional Acupuncture, it is helpful to view one’s own emotional life in the following way: Over time, due to our social conditioning, one has accumulated a range of emotional negativity to a vast array of ideas, thoughts, feelings, situations… These ideas now form what we call ‘the

often leads to a whole area of negativity being neutralised. The issue does not get erased as that would not be favourable, but rather the emotional sensitivity has been taken away, and the problem is seen realistically. After all, why should a past negative experience still affect us? It is because we are still trapped in that past emotion’s intensity, and we have no way of getting around that. Emotional Acupuncture helps the person see in a more ‘sane’ manner, and the problem fades away. It combines ancient Eastern knowledge of the body with modern research into the workings of the mind. Nial Sawa (B.A.) I have over eight years of experience in alternative therapies. I am a qualified Acupuncture Therapist and a qualified teacher of the Yongquan school of Tai-Chi. www.yongquan.org. I specialise in treating Depression, Chronic Fatigue, and Back and Neck pain.

Certain emotional issues in our lives have been created over time, with a certain negative viewpoint towards a theme. This can be seen in the case of a physical injury. To begin with the injury was physical, but then the attitude towards it became emotionally negative, perhaps due to a general swaying to negativity in the person and/or the chronic nature of the injury. Therefore, the physical problem has turned into a negative emotionality and the cure needs to involve a change in that negative emotional idea, in getting better in regard to the injury, for example. If the person believes they can get better, the treatment itself is made vastly, vastly easier!! This is the reason why some sports players get over the exact same injury quicker than others! It all has to do with emotional negativity, or the lack of it. Well, by using emotional acupuncture the poisoned trees of Emotional Negativity are felled strategically one by one. This may seem to be a long process, but actually what one finds is that when the ‘Root Issue’ or ‘Root Tree’ is culled, this

VALENCIA FOOTBALL Joy !

“ THERE’S O N LY T WO VALEN CIA CLUB DE FUTBOL , T WO VALEN CIA CLUB DE FUTBOL” Valencia Club de Fútbol really are impossible to follow, one minute they play world-beating, attacking football and the next minute they look like they wouldn’t be out of place in the Wigan Amateur League. Their schizophrenic psyche is maybe a product of the fans ever-changing attitude towards the team. If anyone should make a bad pass or

even if the other team has an attacking opportunity, then the crowd start whistling and booing. When Mestalla wants, it can be one of the most intimidating stadiums to visit in Europe, just ask FC Bruges who were taken aback not only by the team’s attacking play but by the sheer vocal force that the fans produced. Against Valladolid we witnessed once again that Valencia on their day are a joy to behold with slick passing football that the crowd truly appreciates. The Chés ran out 2-0 victors but the result could have been much more ‘contundente’ if Mata had had a bit more sparkle about him and a surprisingly inaccurate David Villa had not put on his sheriff star boots that day. The game was significant for several reasons, the first being that it was the first match where we got to see Jérémy Mathieu at his best. He ran up and down the line offering Valencia various attacking options and it’s plain to see that Emery and his staff have worked on the Frenchman’s defensive positioning as well. Secondly, the best player on the park by a long chalk was Éver Banega;

Pain !

he scored the first goal with a long-range shot and then set up the second for Villa. It would seem that the young Argentinean has already booked his ticket to the World Cup finals this summer and Valencia have a class midfield playmaker for many years to come. Thirdly, Chori Domínguez finally got to show the home fans what he’s about and if, as believed, David Silva will leave at the season’s end, then we have a suitable replacement. Perhaps not as technically gifted as the young Canarian (is that a budgie?) but with considerably ‘más garra’. The following game against Villa’s old club, Sporting Gijón, seemed to be a gettable three-pointer and demonstrated once again Valencia’s Jekyll and Hyde character. Banega was missing in action, Mathieu’s defence was non-existent and to all intents and purposes it looked as if V.C.F. couldn’t care less. The same could not be said for the Asturians who came out firing with both barrels. After five minutes Sporting were 1-0 up and Valencia were struggling. As nearly always happens, the opposing keeper © 24/7 Valencia 2010

twentyfoursevenvalencia 37 played the game of his life and saved countless goals whilst at the beginning of the second half Emery remembered that he had Chori Domínguez on the bench who, when given the opportunity, began to turn the game around. Banega played better with the appearance of his fellow Argentinean on the pitch and Valencia’s persistence paid off with a Mata equaliser that secured a point for the visitors. Still on the road the Chés visited the Venice of the north, Bruges, home of chips, chocolate and beer, and one of the most physically hard teams in the Europa League. Valencia should have been 3-0 up after five minutes but the woodwork and another inspired keeper kept the scores level. On realising that they couldn’t outplay Valencia, the Belgians decided that the other option was to kick seven bells out of the Chés which they set about at with some aplomb. The French referee turned a blind ‘oeil’ to proceedings even when his fellow countryman Mathieu was demolished by a Bruges defender (incidentally Mathieu will play no more football this season due to this injury) and couldn’t wait to get out his red card when Silva retaliated at the beginning of the second half. Valencia, down to ten men with a makeshift defence, fought on and

the Belgians’ only goal came from a shot that bobbled over the outstretched hand of the unfortunate Moyà. Villa had one chance at the end to equalise but his shot hit the post and with it went any chance of salvaging something from the game. Back to Mestalla for the next encounter against Getafe where, thanks to a tremendous performance from ‘El Guaje’ Villa, Valencia came out 2-1 victors even though they played the last 30 minutes with one man less after the referee sent Alexis off after a theatrical dive from the cheating Pedro Leon. ‘Chori’ Domínguez made the starting line-up and turned in a complete performance that left little doubt to his talent but Villa was the star, scoring both goals and leaving himself as ‘pichichi’ of the Spanish League. A few days later FC Bruges came to Mestalla to defend their slim advantage from the first leg. After Mata scored after 20 seconds it seemed that it would be a walk in the park but then, yet again, the Belgian keeper was unbeatable. The match went into extra time and thanks to two Pablo Hernández goals Valencia went through to the next round, but not before crystallising another ‘nit de patiment’ for the Mestalla fans who made

the Belgians’ task so much harder due to their vociferous support. So after the euphoria we had the disappointment of losing to Atlético Madrid. Valencia can have no complaints; we scored from what should have been a penalty for the rojiblancos. Marchena clearly handled the ball and should have been sent off and thirdly they just didn’t try. Miguel was later sent off as well from a dubious decision by the referee but the match had been lost by that stage. Once more we were left wondering which is the real Valencia, the dynamic, motivated attacking machine or the apathetic, pondering eleven who give the impression they should be somewhere else? In the next month VCF have three home games where they can use the Mestalla factor to their advantage and there also happens to be an away visit to Barça. Which Valencia will we see there? CLUBLAND March is upon us again, a month that is famous for Valencia the world around. The Las Fallas festival is when the city goes into meltdown with parties, fireworks and general mayhem (in a good way). The main days will be the 15th to the 20th where street parties will block the roads offering live bands, DJs and performances throughout the nights making it a 24-hour party for the hard-core few of you out there. One of the biggest verbenas (street party) is found in Av. Aragón but I enjoy the ones found around Plaza Cánovas as you also have the use of the many bars there, and I am sure to be having a drink in the popular Portland Ale House (C/ Salamanca, 10). Don’t forget all the clubs & bars will be open every night as well!! Back to the club life now and to my favourite venue Miniclub (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 111). This month sees my AHH…Party back on the 5th with myself and Andrew Grant from Barraca Music, and the beautiful Anita Dinamita & Just Pi holding up the back room. Other dates recommended over Fallas are the 17th with local collectives and good friends Dieciséis Cubos & Minor Scene Collective and 18th with a Detroit/USA legend Chez Damier. (www. myspace.com/miniclubvlc) Going back to the roots of Valencia dance culture just outside the city is the now 40-yearold Barraca club (Les Palmeres, Sueca). This month sees the producer of the moment Michel Cleis on the 6th and the famous Cocoon Party on the 19th from Germany with Guy Gerber, Onur Onzer and also Miniclub resident DJs Daniel Kyo and Marvin Deno. (www. barracamusic.com) Soul is still going from strength to strength down at Gandhara (C/ Eugenia Viñes, 225) on Malvarrosa beach with good friend and contributor to this page DJ Cosy O. The home of R&B and hip-hop in Valencia every Saturday night welcomes special guest DJ Acción Sánchez, one half of SFDK, the biggest hip-hop group in Spain, on the 27th. You can also catch DJ Cosy O on Wednesday nights at Rumbo 144 (Av. Blasco Ibáñez, 144) and Thursday nights at the luxurious Laydown restaurant (Mercado de Fuencarral). (www. soulvalencia.com) Talking of parties going from strength to strength, Excuse Me? (Sala Sider, C/ dels Tomasos, 14) since starting over a year ago at their new venue have had some great international guest DJs through their doors. Their unique parties happen every Friday and Saturday with a mix of nu-disco, space disco and rock & roll. The 6th sees one of the pioneers of the UK nu-disco scene, Stevie Kotey, on the

decks and as well as a full line-up of DJs over Fallas every day from the 17th to the 20th. To finish off the month we have Valencia’s own Nacho Marco who has just finished a remix for Groove Armada and is resident to Excuse Me! (www.myspace.com/excusemeclub) One of the new clubs on the block is LA3 (C/ Padre Porte 2), pronounced “La Tres”. This venue is one for the ‘nasty kids’ with three rooms hosting live groups and DJs in the main room with inditronic and commercial indie music with resident DJ Fono. The other rooms upstairs giving you a mix of electro and tech house with resident Pablo Cebrián and international guest DJs. Recommended night is the 19th for the Plastic Party with DJ Mario Vaquerizo for something a little be different! Also check out the other Groovelives venues, Piccadilly and 47 Social Club, in the centre of the city for an intimate and fun night out with funk, disco, electro, indie and more. (www. groovelives.com) If you are also the centre of town and in the Barrio del Carmen in March, it will be the hive of activity for Fallas with bars and people pouring out into the streets. One of the best late night venues there is Music Box (C/ Pintor Zariñena, 16) where you can party until 7.00h and check out good friend Kike Vilar on the 20th. Also Pinball (C/ de la Concordia, 3) in the Carmen is celebrating their 14th anniversary on the 12th with live bands, DJs, great soul / ‘60s music and food for all!!! I like to put a good mix of music tastes here to suit all ears so for you drum ‘n’ bass lovers out there check out Street Plan events. They have been going on strong in Valencia now for some time and have a good following of hard-core fans. This month they have a number of events going on so check out their website. My pick of events is the 18th at Flow (Plaza Honduras, 35) and also something different on the 27th for my love for extreme sports and music, when they will support the first “Do You Bike” BMX competition at the Polideportivo Municipal Virgen del Carmen-Beteró (C/ Campillo de Altobuey, 1) (www.myspace.com/streetplan) Going down to the Port, with the run up to summer only round the corner, I am excited to announce that Estrella Damm have opened their new venue. Back in 2008 the Estrella Damm Lounge offered people a great night out in one of the coolest locations. Now they are located in the Veles y Vents building on the first floor and renamed Estrella Damm Club. I played there at the end of February and it is one of the sexiest bars in Valencia. I did fall in love and almost proposed to the DJ booth; go see it to find out why! They will be open every Friday & Saturday in March with a cool line-up of DJs. (www.estrelladammclub.com)

Whilst we are down in the port area and if you want to carry on into the early hours then pay a visit to the luxurious Las Ánimas Puerto nightclub. This venue is massive and offers a great range of music that will suit anyone’s ears from funky & vocal house to mixes of Spanish dance music and R&B. Put that together with the beautiful people floating around the club and you will have fun. Also check out Mya (Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias) and La Indiana (Plaza España) near the centre for the same atmosphere that never disappoints the eye. (www.grupolasanimas.com) Finally I just wanted to mention a couple of bars for great music in the week that you will not hear about anywhere else. If you are looking for a good night out and listen to some quirky music with classic indie, rock and rock & roll mash and a good expat contingent then visit Underground Night at Bar Frankenstein (C/ Marqués de Caro, 5). Also if you are looking for a more underground house music scene on a Thursday then Bar Peatonal (C/ Juan Llorens, 39) is worth a visit with resident Lupo Heras and guests playing some great music. Also I have a secret venue to mention though I can not give much information here it is strictly members only bar every day from 10.00h to 23.00h with live DJs on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and this month they have an ‘Anti Karaoke’ theme where anyone can dress up and be a rock star. If you want to find out more how to find this place and to get an invite, contact me through my website. (www. insound.es) Finally, a little plug from me. Please take time to visit my iNsound blog (www.insound.es), where I post events and information on things happening in the city that you don’t hear about apart from 24/7Valencia, and also support my monthly iNsound Radio Podcast available on iTunes. See you on the dance floor! Paul Childs www.insoundgroup.com

WOMAN

I think I already waxed lyrical last month about my birthday last month, so here’s a little advance warning: I’m about to do it again! What a soiree! For your information, esteemed reader, I, Anita Darling, am actually, without sounding big-headed, the luckiest girl in the world. I think I have the best friends in the universe. I floated around my party on a cloud of joy, radiating love and happiness as I looked at each of my darling guests and thought, I love you. And you. And you, and you and you! I nearly did a little Sound Of Music-esque song and dance I was so bursting with pride and cheer! So caring, so thoughtful, so sweet, and such a good looking bunch to top it all off (It’s important, I’m not shallow, I just have a digital camera surgically attached to my hand and it’s an added bonus if your subjects are this photogenic...) The event was not without drama though, of course, what moment in my life is? I nearly had to cancel at the last minute when a high school reunion was planned the same night, by none other than the two girls who left school three years before any of the rest of us. The cheek! Now, quite a few of my close friends now are old school friends I still see and I wanted them to be there with me, yet on the other hand I would have loved to go to the reunion to remember old times and laugh at how old we have all got (NB, have now seen photos of said

reunion: some people have got really, really old! How did that happen!? When did these sprite-ly teenage boys become balding with beer bellies?), so I was weighing up the options the day before but in the end thought, shove it, I’m going to have my - Birthday - cake and eat it, too. I’ll ditch the awkward conversation and cheap drink bound to be found at the reunion and celebrate my birthday and whoever wants to be there will be there and tough cookie to those who want to miss out on all the fun. And fun it was. There were Mojitos (what is a Darling/Devine party without mojitos, I say) and mini spring rolls and glowsticks and dancing and more mojitos and enough photos taken to last a lifetime. We ended up in the freezing cold Ánimas del Puerto where some odd art exhibition had either taken place or was taking place, we weren’t quite sure, and then home for breakfast, i.e., leftover chicken wings and potato salad! I got some marvellous birthday presents, mostly in the line of sewing kits and Fashion Design books etc., so I can spend the rest of 2010 becoming the next big name on the Valencia Fashion Week catwalks... I wish! My lovely parents even got me a fabulous new sewing machine - after all, times are tight and this way I can renovate my wardrobe by customising the old and even daring to make something new! My friend GDM, who is a budding designer in his own right, took me to the side and made me swear to never be bigger than him. I think he may have been serious, he does see himself as the future Tom Ford, after all. Speaking of Tom Ford, I am embarrassed to admit that I still have not got around to watching A Single Man. I better get a move on as I doubt it will be in the cinemas for very much longer. The reviews I’ve heard are all raving, and it’s still on at Espai Campanar in Original Version. My friends and I got into the habit of going every Sunday up to Christmas - every time you see a movie there, they give you a discounted ticket to use over the next two weeks, which is excellent news for the recession-sensitive comme moi, and makes it the cheapest cinema experience in town. Plus, in one of my favourite eateries, Propaganda, downstairs in Mercado de Campanar (old Mercado de Fuencarral, Av. Tirso de Molina, 16) they do a yummy cinema

set menu where your ticket is included in the price. But what am I doing rambling on about the cinema, you are probably wondering, when I would usually, at exactly this time of year, be sounding off about Las Fallas! The biggest event of the Valencia calendar, there is not a single person in the City without something to say about the festival, and this year I will be throwing myself into the reverie and having fun fun fun from the 12th to the 19th nonstop. Yes, my friends, a miracle has finally happened and have actually been given a week off work at The Dreaded Bank (oh yes, I’ve added a ‘dreaded’. More on that next month, too long-winded for here!). I decided that living in El Carmen and going to work at 7.30 in the morning during Fallas, at least from the 15th on, were just not compatible options. Without being vulgar, my lovely pretty little quiet side street becomes a river of pee, it’s impossible to get to work (20 minutes away) in under an hour as public transport doesn’t run properly, and I get jealous of the people still out from the night before eating churros for breakfast. Plus, I never get to see a single Mascletà, even though they both frighten the hell out of me and bore me endlessly. In fact, I’m not especially enamoured by the whole fireworks thing at all, but sshhh - don’t tell the Valencians they’ll have my guts for garters! You just know Fallas has kicked off when from March 1st, if you didn’t know what was going on or hadn’t seen it all before, you’d think there were drive-by shootings and terrorist attacks all day and night, what with all the bangers and crackers going off in your face 24/7. What I do love though is the fact that it is still such a family-driven festival, and the Ofrenda, the silence towards the end as they near the Virgen with her skirt made of flowers as she gazes serenely down at the falleros and falleras as they come silently and emotionally into the square has even been known to bring a tear to my eye. Or maybe it was a bit of smoke from a firecracker, we’ll never know!

Benitatxell and Cumbres del Sol This leg of the route starts at the entrance to a town called Benitatxell where, just before entering the town, there is a road that heads towards the left, towards the mountain that you can see in front of you. It’s a hard route at this point, be ready to climb various steep ascents, but the views make it worthwhile, a great reward for your effort. Once you get to the top, stop and turn around to enjoy one of the most incredible views of the region. Here at the top, the oncebeautiful summit has been taken over by the developers and you’ll find ‘Cumbres del Sol’, a gigantic, dense urbanisation. From here you should go straight ahead, following signs to the beach, but, don’t forget to take a look at the sea from the cliffs, probably among the highest in Pais Valencià. What goes up must come down, so, this is mostly downhill. It is worthwhile though, heading off track from time to time on one of the paths alongside to take in views of the sea. These are probably the best views of the sea in the whole of Valencia region. The downhill is a lovely rest for the legs (be careful, at some points you can cycle really fast…), but before you get to the sea, there is a car park to your left. It’s a good idea to stop here and walk up the little hill, to take in the views and plants and animals that live here.

sea you can see another bay which can’t be reached from here. To get to it, look for a path on the left just next to where you stopped before arriving at the beach, in the car park. On the right we can see a cave that you can reach on foot. This whole area is riddled with underground caves (one of the largest submarine caves in Europe is here) and, walking carefully along the cliffs on the right-hand side (on top of the cave) you can see enormous holes in the mountain full of sea water. This is a really beautiful place to explore, and you’ll want to spend a while here. The return is really hard at the beginning. The first uphill will take patience using the small plate with a big sprocket, bit by bit, and then continue climbing the same road you came down on. For the very daring, before getting to the urbanisation, there is a path that leads you to the one of highest point of the region, with unforgettable views. But if that’s not your cup of tea, get out of the urbanisation and freewheel towards Benitatxell. (On the downhill you’ll come across a Uruguayan restaurant, where you can fill up on roasted meat…) Cross the town, heading towards TeuladaMoraira, where you can explore some of the best routes of the region cycling through vineyards down to the sea. But you will have to wait until the next 24/7 issue…

Continue heading towards the sea (Take care here because it’s really steep. You’ll need to use your brakes all the way). You’ll come to a pretty cove enclosed by headland. As you look towards the
