BENIMACLET
The city of Valencia can be split into sub-divisions or neighbourhoods often known as “barrios”. One of these barrios is called Benimaclet, a name with Arabic origins meaning “sons of Majlad.” This barrio is located to the northeast of Valencia’s city centre. Before 1970, this barrio practiced local sovereignty; therefore, Benimaclet was its own town or village distinct from the city of Valencia. Today, the authenticity and independence of this area is still very tangible. The area’s history seeps through the pores of the buildings and streets. For example, ‘Casa De Trencadís’ is dated from the twentieth century and is famous for its ceramic décor, which is in honour of Gaudí. Benimaclet is a unique and intriguing area that is quite under the radar but has recently been calling for much more attention. Benimaclet is part of the up-and-coming sphere, due to having a variety of entertainment and attractions that are worthy of everyone’s interest. It is close to the university, attracting a fresh crowd while at the same time providing a timeless, classic feel for seasoned veterans of the going out scene. With many different options ranging from food and drink to easy-going hangout spots, there are endless reasons for Benimaclet to be visited and adored. BARS: Our first stop, Café London (also known as London Lounge Bar), grabbed our interest with their weekly
deal on classic and delicious cocktails. Every Tuesday is cocktail day! Order from an assortment of your favorite cocktails, like gin and tonic, whiskey sours, or cosmopolitans all for just 5€ starting at 20:00h. Of course, there are many other drink options as well. Their drink menu focused heavily on their expansive collection of gin and may even be considered a Gin Bar. Café London is located at C/ Enrique Navarro, 8, 46020 Valencia. Their hours are from 18:30h - 02:00h everyday and closed on Sundays. MUSIC/ART: Kaf Cafe is a cafe, bar, and an homage to Franz Kafka all in one. There is something for everyone at this charming little café! Every weeknight, the cafe turns into an intimate stage setting where singers, poets, and musicians alike perform to a warm and welcoming crowd. In June, the cafe hosted the trio “Tuning of Hearts & Jesús Andrés”. They performed traditional Middle Eastern music to a full room of all ages in an experience that could be described as both immersive and spiritual. The band had an ideal balance between elegant instrumental work with the smooth voice of the vocalist. Each song was inspired by a Sufi poem and although the lyrics were in a foreign language, the message and emotion of each poem still deeply enchanted and resonated with the crowd. If good music, good people, and good coffee are something that
interests you; Kaf Cafe on C Arquitecto Arnau, 16 is an absolute must when visiting Benimaclet! TAPAS/FOOD: Pata Negra Restoran is a whimsical and affordable place to eat in Benimaclet. We recommend this place to everyone for their adorable atmosphere and mouth-watering food. The restaurant is embellished with a variety of eclectic décor, ranging from a Mediterranean style to a vintage Americana vibe. Music is something that many Benimaclet residents seem to share a deep appreciation for. This is clear from the jazz records and instruments that are heavily featured throughout the interior of the restaurant. There are indoor seating options for a cosy feel as well as the option to dine in the courtyard. The courtyard is covered in lush greenery that breathes life into the small dining area. For lunch, there is a pre-fixed menu which includes different choices of a starter, an entree, and a dessert for only 12 €. A better deal is hard to find! Visit Pata Negra at C/ Barón de San Petrillo, 3, 46020 Valencia for lunch or dinner. El Carabasser is a lively tapas bar located on the corner of C/ Reverendo Rafael Tramoyeres. If you are looking for a more intimate and late night experience, this is the place. The bright lights and the mass of satisfied and happy diners make this place hard to ignore. Expect to spot groups of ener-
3
getic people sitting in and outside of the restaurant. In fact, we were originally drawn to this place when walking down the street one night. We could not keep ourselves from venturing inside and we are quite happy we did. Once inside, the ambience was welcoming and bubbly. The bar offers local cervezas and flavourful, one-of-a-kind tapas. Pumpkin, the bar’s namesake, is featured heavily. Go with some friends and try the pumpkin-cheese dip for a meaningful experience that you won’t be soon to forget. Don’t have much time to sit and relax? No worries, El Carabasser also has many options on display meant to take to go. The restaurant is located on C/ Reverendo Rafael Tramoyeres, 35, 46020 Valencia and open everyday from 20:45h 01:00h. Last but most definitely not least, sweets must be mentioned. In the land of horchata, Horchatería Daniel may sweep the competition. This “ice cream shop” is filled with display cases of colorful and tempting pastries
and sweets. There is ice cream, chufa, coffee, fartons and horchata as well. Horchatería Daniel is as authentic as it comes, continuing its tradition of naturally hand-crafted sweets since 1949. The store was family operated and opened in 1960 and has been running smoothly ever since. There are multiple locations. The store closest to Benimaclet is located at Horchateria Daniel on Av. l’Orxata, 41, 46120 Alboraia, Valencia. It is only a second outside of the barrio of Benimaclet but well worth the visit!
ARCHITECTURE/BUILDINGS: ‘Espai Verd’ is a building in Benimaclet, designed by architect Antonio Cortés Ferrando. This building combines the surreal and the material worlds; it is dreamy yet dense, heavy and raw. Its layers of concrete and vegetation seems to bring to life the dreamscape of Miyazaki’s “Howl’s Moving Castle.” Espai Verd is designed in the archi-
tectural style of Brutalism. Brutalism was a modernist movement that gained momentum under the ideology of a “social utopia.” The buildings in this style are designed to appear as “streets in the sky” and that dreamy visual is invoked immediately upon looking at the geometric superstructure that is Espai Verd. This edifice is a commanding and unique piece of architecture that is impossible to find elsewhere. Whether you are looking for a cute café, a lively bar scene, quality tapas, or just a change in scenery away from the typical tourist spots; look no further than the barrio of Benimaclet. This close-knit and festive neighborhood does not disappoint and is well worth a visit.

MAR D’AMURA
The ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have had some really memorable nights of delicious dining & superb live music at ‘Mar d’Amura.’ This place has quality written all over it and attracts an appreciative crowd and is refreshingly integrated with the district. Set in the heart of the Cabanyal district, it is run by Maria de Miguel. She is a popular local of this increasingly dynamic barrio.
weekdays, they have a daily midday menu for 9.50€ and they always have options for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free dishes too. Large groups with specialized menus are catered for at any hour and any day of the week if you book in advance.
Maria has brought plenty of experience with her with this long-term project at ‘Mar d’Amura’ that is really broad in scope. The vision is a gastronomic and cultural space for locals and visitors. Indeed, she tells us that they have an upstairs that will be opened one day in the future, which bodes well given just how active a place the ground floor already is. She has a fine team with the busy cultural programme including excellent live flamenco fusion on Sundays included…
Mar D’Amura told us more about the live music:
THE RESTAURANT Dig the tasty octopus! The philosophy of the kitchen is market produce, with seasonal products used in Valencian & Mediterranean cuisine and the gastronomy of the Cabanyal. The dishes are elaborate, artistically presented and healthy and good value, considering the quality of the ingredients. Their desserts are 100% homemade. On
LIVE MUSIC VENUE
“The Live flamenco and sometimes fusion is every Sunday at Mar d’Amura. It was born during the presentation of the record “Mediterraníes” by Albert Sanz. A post-gig jam session started with other musicians including Roqui Albero, Javi Forner, David Gadea and Vicent Macián. Some flamenco singers, including Vicente y Juan Torres (canto), Ramón Giménez (canto) and Johnny Bizárraga joined in. They are local lads from Cabanyal, starting out in the world of flamenco. This special fusion of jazz and flamenco really took off that night and the results have been fantastic ever since. Keyboardist Albert Sanz & percussionist Sergio Martinez proposed that we make this a regular project and since then we have been privileged to enjoy the artistry of wonderful musicians like
Perico Sambeat, Tomás de los Cariños, Juan de Pilar, Juan José Amador, Mateo Castro, Helena Feenstra, Alba Díaz, Ricardo Osorno, Eric Benavent, Chicho Leo, Dario Piccioni, Ales Cesarini, Ginés Rodríguez and more. The live flamenco sessions are from 19.30h every Sunday. Sometimes it is pure flamenco, sometimes it is a fusion. See our Facebook page for details of each concert.”

VALENCIA WINES
VALENCIA GINS, WHITE & ROSADO WINES This last month has seen VÍ Vid ‘on tour’ in the Ribera del Duero, tasting white wines from the Rias Baixas in Galicia and tasting monovarietal wines from Monastrell, Moscatel and Bobal in the next phase of the ‘Concurso de Vinos Valencianos Proava.’ The first two elements have taken us out of our normal comfort zone and challenged our palates but not quite as much as the Gins! So, our article for the summer edition covers a slightly wider range of alcoholic products than usual. We start in the Rias Baixas, on the Atlantic coast of Spain where the vineyards produce wines from the Albariño variety, sometimes with Treixadura in a blend. The wines are white, with a pale-yellow core, stainless steel edge and are pale with golden flashes. (The wines are of varying hues and intensity but this is as close to a generic note as you can get.)
The wines were presented by the DO in the Westin Hotel on 27 June and some 90 wines from the 2018 vintage and 49 bodegas were available to taste. Albariño wines are generally floral and aromatic on the nose with white stone fruits such as apricot and peach, again in varying degrees of intensity and in the mouth demonstrate a good level of fruit balanced with acidity and mineral touches, sometimes a little salinity. The 2018 was classified as very good by the technical reviewers; many of the wines are available in Valencia and easy to find in supermarkets or specialist wine shops. Here are some which we particularly liked:Firstly, two from the Palacio de Fefiñanes, the Albariño 2018 and the 1583 from the same vintage. The first is aromatic with citrus notes on the nose and is round and balanced in the mouth.
The 1583 is still closed on the nose… with a more mineral, creamy finish. The wines of Martín Códax are widely available. Two of their wines we particularly liked, the Marieta which whilst closed on the nose was very full in the mouth with lots of fruit. It has an oily (petrol) note, which adds depth and this is why the wines are sometimes considered to be similar to good Rieslings. The second was the Alba Martin, grown close to the sea and having a distinct salty note with granite in the finish. Not cheap this one but it is fair to say it has a long life ahead of it! Bodega Pazo Pondal showed two wines, Leira Fondal and Lenda. Both are very smooth, well balanced and with salinity and minerals in the finish. The Bodega is looking for an outlet currently in the Valencia area. It is fair to say these wines will improve with time and at VÍ Vid we prefer them
11
RIKI WIGLEY & MARIAN DARÁS OF VÍ VID
when they have 2-3 years in bottle. Turning to Rosado wines, our initial feeling that 2018 was a very good year for Rosados in general and Bobal in particular is born out with extensive tasting. One new wine we tasted on the Ribera del Duero tour, the Aire de Protos, (from the bodega in Peñafiel) and from Tempranillo is pale rose with hints of salmon. Lots of ripe red fruit on the intensive nose. It is really fresh in the mouth, with good acidity and minerality in the finish and should be available shortly. Any of the ranges from Coviñas (Rosa & Dito, Al Vent, Enterizo, Aula) will give you a fresh strawberry and cherry fruit with an acidity and balance that keeps the wine feeling fresh in the mouth. (All Bobal) The Merlot from Finca Collado with a small percentage of Monastrell, that has spent a few weeks in oak, is also a must for serious food lovers. We are still recommending the Rose Marine from Chozas Carrascal, Juan de Juanes from La Viña, Mirame from Dominio de la Vega. With the expected heat this summer, Rosados should be your main choice to accompany food and put the reds aside until September!
And now to the Gins! Bodegas Nodus have been producing artisan Gins for some time and have recently launched their wholly ecologic RainGin, made with lemon peel, angelica root, juniper berries, coriander seed and white pepper. The botanicals are all ecologically certified and are macerated in a mixture of wheat ethanol and alcohol before distillation in a pot still, to 70% abv before being reduced to 40% with water and ecological ethanol. This gives a London dry style gin in which the Juniper predominates. Of course, Nodus started with the N Gin VLC, a premium gin of 39% abv made with wine from the Chardonnay variety, a distinct range of botanicals (angelica, cardamum, sage, rosemary, Juniper etc) from which emerge mandarine and orange notes. Their N Gin 2 is also 39% abv. It owes its red fruit flavour and pink colour to the two types of strawberries (one sweet, one acidic), which are added to the botanicals in the maceration before the double distillation in a copper pot still.
Alternatively, if you are looking for other authentic Valencian gins you should also try the Valencia City Gin made with almonds, orange and Moscatel wine as a base or the London City Gin, both offered by Bodegas Vegamar, which come with a trendy lighting system in the base of the bottle. All the gins are available through the Bodega’s outlets or online.
RIKI WIGLEY & MARIAN DARÁS VÍ Vid is a project supporting the development of wine knowledge and gastronomy in the Valencian Community. We run wine clubs, give tastings of Valencian wines in English and support wine-makers and bodegas directly. We can be found in Instagram (Vivid8402), and through our blog VÍ Vid at vvidblog.wordpress. com, in Facebook, www.facebook. comVivideventos and in Twitter @ vividvinos. Article © 2019 24/ 7 Valencia
RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH TAPAS BAR EL ARENAL
ANITA GIRO
Anita Giro are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. Various members of the ‘24/7 Valencia’ team have been popping in for their mostly Mediterranean tapas with an international touch over the years. It’s a liberal mix of clientele, tasty cuisine and it has a rather distinctive buzz that sets it apart from its generic counterparts. Incidentally, it’s LGBT-friendly too…
There is a long terrace outside that is often busy and the arty interior is an unpretentious mix of styles with an historic wall at the back and vintage-style long bar, black high stools, low chairs & modern white tables for dining. We have always been treated well by the welcoming staff and their
menus are conveniently in either Spanish or English. There is an international vibe to this place and it is still very much the local popular hangout with open-minded individuals in the historic centre. It’s a tolerant place and there is a sense of freedom here that only adds to its appeal. Starters include a tasty & fluffy hummus topped with pimentón de la vera with nachos that have a distinctive tang. It’s worth mentioning that care is taken to present all their dishes with artistic flair as well as having the freshest ingredients. There are seafood choices like Octopus and Langostine platos. Vegetarians are well catered for too in
their ‘Green Love You Green’ section with healthy salads like the aubergine, roasted red peppers, onion with smoked anchovies and black olive pâté choice, for example. For the main course section known as ‘With Knife and Fork’ we did not hesitate to try their superb ‘Barbecue Beef ribs’ yet again and we were not disappointed. Beautifully presented with sweet potato shavings, the meat was rich and lovingly tender and the well-prepared barbecue sauce was just right…so we really took our time savouring this filling dish. We were well sated by our main course but we chose to share a recommended dessert in their ‘Share Something Sinful’ section, which
13
was the ‘French toast of horchata ice-cream almond.’ It was a delicious creation to look at as well as wind the evening down with and is unique to Anita Giro and popular with their regular crowd. They have a nice choice of white & red wines as well as a fair choice of Gins and Vermouths to savour too. Their ‘tapas to share’ choice is ample and attractively-presented with choices like ‘Vegetable curry samosas’ as well as an ample ‘Cheese board’ and tasty ‘Bravas Veganas con sajonesa,’ a range of filling croquettes and so much more. Incidentally, there is the option of a gluten-free toast supplement for just a touch more in their ‘More Than Mass’ section, which includes toasts with appetizing choices like crispy monkfish, falafel durum, pork loin, goat’s cheese and salmon choices.
The soundtrack is relaxing and eclectic with anything from jazz to film music and classical and more. A typical night out here with tapas, drink and dessert included should come to around 20€ each. The philosophy of Anita Giro is quality product & presentation at affordable prices in a pleasant setting. Funky terrace too! 24/7 VALENCIA TEAM Spanish Red wines: 9.50€ -15.20€ bottle (2€ to 2.30€ a glass) Spanish White Wines: 9.50€ -14.90€ bottle (2€ to 2.30€ a glass) Salads & Carpaccios: 9€-11.50€ Mains:11.50€ -12€ Desserts:4.50€ Toast with toppings and pittas: 5.90€ -7.90€ Wide selection of Gins: 5€-8€ Vermouth: 3.50€-3.80€

FOOD BY HELEN WESTWATER OF LA OLA FRESCA
HOLA CEVICHE, CEVICHE LA OLA Hello Summer! With most of Europe in meltdown with some serious climate change wake-up call weather, here’s to a recipe that does not need to be cooked in the oven! It’s ‘Hola ceviche, Ceviche La Ola!’ Fresh fish doused in a wave of the zippiest & zappiest citric and spicy flavours. There are a variety of Peruvian ceviche recipes with which you can use the base of your choice… be it fish, king prawns, beef or vegan with aubergine, mango or avocado. Whatever recipe you choose, keep in mind three important points; the base ingredient is raw so you must insure you buy the freshest from a reputable source and keep it as cold as possible before use. If you want to be extra sure, freeze it but be aware it may change the texture! A sharp knife is needed. How you cut the ingredients is key. The vegetables, apart from the onions, should be all diced equally small and even. The fish in slightly largely chunks but delicately sliced rather than pushing, to avoid damaging the texture. If you are using beef you need to cut it as fine as possible. Thirdly, you don’t need to marinate it for long. This apparently was what they though was safer in olden times, but in reality the longer the base ingredient is left, the more danger of contamination. In fact, the freshness of the flavours comes out more if it is left for only 5 to 15 minutes maximum. Our recipe below ‘Hola Ceviche, Ceviche La Ola’ is the most traditional and uses fish and the simplest and purest dressing. Yet, with each hola comes an adios as we sadly say goodbye to one who has been working by my side these last few years through hell and high water!! Oh no! Thanks for everything, Honor, you’ve been such a superstar, and who will understand my jokes now?! ;) hashtag/ Oh No for future information on Honor’s and Noah’s band ‘Oh No’.
Method First make your tiger milk. Hand squeeze the limes into a bowl. Add the other ingredients (except for aji amarillo paste). Leave to infuse to one side. After 5 minutes, strain and add amarillo paste and salt. This will keep for 4 hours in fridge. When ready to serve, slice your onion finely into strips and dip
straight into your prepared iced-water. Next, dice all your vegetable ingredients of your choice fine and small so to absorb the marinade quicker.
add your tiger milk mix. Stir well. Leave for 2- 5 minutes. Add the rest of the diced vegetables and the onions. Check the balance of your dish for chilli and salt.
Take your fish and slice it gently at an angle of 45 degrees into strips of around 2 to 3 cm. Put the fish in a bowl and stir in some salt. Leave for 2 minutes. Next,
Garnish with the coriander and place on a plate with the sweet potato and fried corn. Serve immediately and enjoy the fresh wave of flavours!

VALENJOY EL ARENAL
Have you been looking to see Valencia and are not sure how you will get around this big city? Look no further. Valenjoy, located on Moro Zeit street in the Carmen zone, has a fun and affordable solution — electric scooters. The store offers electric scooter and standard bike rentals along with guided and non-guided tour options from prices starting around 18€ for e-scooter rentals (2 hours) and 25€ for tours. And if you have your own scooter that needs repairs, bring it on in because they have reparations in-house. To book a tour all you need to do is call the store and either choose from the pre-made tours, such as historic or city tour, or you can design your own. The tours require reservation and a minimum of 4 people and can range from 1-3 hours. The scooters are a fun option for all ages and very simple to use. After 5 minutes of practice with
the acceleration and the brakes, you are ready to roll. Grab some friends and make a trip to Valenjoy for a joyfilled adventure in Valencia. Text & Photos by Stephanie Penn of The 24/7 Valencia Team

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
VALENCIA EL ARENALSPORTS
IT ´S NOT JUST FOOTBALL IN VALENCIA… With Valencia CF and Levante UD taking a well-earned summer break one can be forgiven for thinking that sport in the city is also in a little recess. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. The World Padel tour makes its next stop in the city from the 7th until the 14th of July when the top male and female competitors in the world will converge on the Pavelló Font de Sant Lluís for their next event. One of the fastest growing sports throughout the world; it is almost predominantly played in a doubles format on a closed court. Somewhat similar but smaller than tennis, the court is surrounded by walls, usually glass, allowing the ball to be kept in play, making it also somewhat compatible with the game of squash. Many of the top men playing in
Valencia have changed doubles partners recently. So, it will be fascinating to see which pairings gel the best in these early stages of the new partnerships. In the Women’s tournament, many fans will be hoping for a repeat final of the recent Valladolid event when the two Martas (Ortega and Marrero) narrowly lost out narrowly in three sets to Alejandra Salazar and Ariana Sánchez. The venue at San Lluis is the usual home of Valencia Basket Club, a successful Spanish league and European basketball team, payrolled by the billionaire and major shareholder Juan Roig (owner of the Mercadona shopping chain). This year they won the 7 DAYS Euro Cup, beating Alba Berlin in a two-legged
final in April. The success of the team did not go unnoticed and recently the club’s top shooting guard Matt Thomas left Valencia Basket for the NBA and current World Champions Toronto Raptors on a three year deal. See www.valenciabasket.com The Fifth International Paella Hockey championships finished at the end of June. In mid-July, the wonderful Poliesportiu Verge del Carme Beteró will play host to the Men and Women Euro Hockey Junior Championships. Teams from Ireland, Russia, Spain, France, Holland, Germany, Belarus and England will play in the female competition, whilst Germany, France, England, Holland, Austria, Belgium, Spain and Poland will compete in the male category.
35
Gaelic Football also has prominent teams of both genders and all ages playing in the city and participating in the Iberian Championship. The local team is called Valencia Sant Vincent and they were formed in 2007. The club will also be running an Autumn 7-a-side League this year to help spread the word on this Irish sport and further highlight their activities to the Valencia community. More information at https://valenciagaa. com Rugby League is also building a following in and around the city. Torrent Tigres, Xativa Roosters and Valencia Warriors are just a few of the local clubs that can be found playing the game in the region. The Spanish National Rugby League side played a friendly against Serbia in 2016 at
the Campo Rugby Quatre Carreras in preparations for their World Cup qualifications, a reward for the recognition of the cities increase in participation levels. Another quintessential English sport, cricket, is very much alive and kicking in Valencia. Levante Cricket Club have first and second teams in both the first and second divisions of the ECCL (East Coast and Central League) of Cricket España. Initially started by a few players having a training session under the Puente de la Exposición, the club can now claim to be one of the most successful in Spain. They train and play at the facilities of another thriving sport, baseball, in the dry river bed. It is known in Spanish as Jardín del Turia, right in the heart of the city and they have players from numerous
nations. Go to www.pitchero.com/ clubs/levantecricketclub for updates. Finally, Valencia has developed a fantastic reputation amongst runners. Throughout the year, running competitions of various distances take place on the Valencia streets culminating with the actual Marathon itself. The 39th Valencia-Trinidad Alfonso EDP Marathon takes place on the 1st of December and attracts some of the best marathon distance runners in the world. Valencia is synonymous with sport 365 days a year. Look around and every weekend there will be some kind of sport for everyone to enjoy, watch or take part in.

SHOPPING EL ARENAL@ VINYL EYE
From start to finish, Vinyl Eye is an unforgettable experience. Located on C/ Turia, you can easily spot the store emblem; a vinyl record inside an eye. Once inside, you are greeted with walls dressed in photos of street art and musicians… giving it a unique feel. The store sells T-shirts, cloth bags, sweatshirts and more which are customizable in colour and design. Vinyl Eye is not just about the product but rather the experience. In about 5 minutes the T-shirt or bag you were imagining is made in the back of the store, complete with a photo-op in front of a backdrop and the product goes home in a record-shaped box. Arturo Chavarría had a dream of starting a totally original store and began ‘Vinyl Eye’ in March of 2017. A Valencia native, his vision was to
connect local artists to retail and ‘Vinyl Eye’ does just that by collaborating with around 70 Valencian artists including David de Limón and Disneylexya. They are striving to add new artists every 2 or 3 weeks. When a product is purchased containing an artist’s design, the artist benefits from their royalty. It is a win-win for everyone. Chavarría’s charisma & drive for the store’s success makes all the difference. Every customer is treated as a friend and it makes a visit all the more special. There is the possibility of expanding to larger cities such as Madrid and Barcelona but, as of now, keep an “eye” out for Vinyl Eye in Valencia. Text by Stephanie Penn

VALENCIA MUSIC
PEP BOTIFARRA EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW 1. Tell us about your Valencian roots and your first experiences with music from your land: My first contact with traditional Valencian music was via my family. Most specifically, my grandmother Otília Borredà, who was from the town of Benigànim. She knew so many songs and popular sayings and as I practically grew up with her, I learned a lot from her. But as it happens, due to my youth, I didn’t pay that much attention to them then. Now I do regret not having listened to my grandmother more. Years after, at the age of 15 or 16, I began singing “albaes” in my city, Xàtiva. I joined the ‘Grup Sarau’, a travelling group of the Costera region. I went with them at weekends, through all of the towns of my area and we made recordings of the older people who recorded traditional songs. We recorded on cassette tapes, which are now digitalized. In the future, we are planning to have them available to anyone who wants to listen to the recordings. For many years, I was collaborating with many groups until 2006, when my best friend Emili Vera encouraged me to record my first solo album ‘Si em pose a cantar cançons’ (Cambra
Records, 2006) And since that moment, my life has been non-stop concerts.
brotherhood to counteract messages of hate and fear.
2. What is the connection between Valencia and the Arabic culture?
4. Could you tell us something about each song?
The land of Valencia, due to its geographic situation halfway between the shores of the North and the South of the Mediterranean and by its history (the Muslim presence lasted centuries) has influences from the music of North Africa. Maybe what most distinguishes them are the “work songs.” However, they also have characteristics similar to other Mediterranean countries such as Italy, Greece and more. Also, I have to say that before knowing Ahmed and recording this album (between one and the other 10 years have passed) I have always loved the music of North Africa and I often listen to it. 3. What is the concept of the album: ‘De banda a banda del Mediterrani’? The idea is to demonstrate the similarities with both types of music. In its elaboration, we have left enough room for spontaneity, joining those popular pieces that Ahmed and I know and they have some obvious resemblances. Also, in these times of xenophobia and the refugee crisis we want to send out a message of
CANT DE BATRE DE JOSÉ CRUAÑES. José Cruañes was from Jávea. I learned this song via a recording from the 1950s. Of all the songs in the album, this is the only one I had recorded before and it also appears on my first album. LA XITXARRA. This is a song from the south of Valencia (in this album there are a lot). Specifically, it is a ‘jota’ from the pueblo of Biar. L’U DE BIAR. Another song of Biar, in this case an “u”, or in other words, a fandango. Of the three verses, two are in Spanish and the other is Valencian. GERINELDO. It is a widely known romantic tale in all of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal included. My grandmother sang me a version. Ahmed sings a version of the romance from Tangiers. SEGIDILLES DE LA FOIA. They are from the Foia de Castalla, again in the south of Valencia. Ahmed sings this Djibouli song.

CANT DE BATRE DE ROTGLÀ i CORBERÀ. This work song was taught to me by my Uncle Adrià. It is another bilingual subject of Valencian/ Castilian. Ahmed sings a Moroccan song from the city of Meknes. JOTA DE LES VENTES. It is from the town of Moixent. Here we have a union of traditional lyrics with new ones from Joan Moixino, that refers to the brotherhood between towns. LA PERXELERA. Traditionally, this is in the ‘petenera’ style from the towns of Palma and Ador, near Gandía. CANT DE BATRE DEL GENOVÉS. The third and last work song on the album. These songs were formed in the fields without instrumental accompaniment. They were constructed in the countryside during the seasonal months of August or September, whilst working with wheat or rice. I learnt it from my Aunt Leonor.
EL COPEO D’ONTINYENT. This ‘copeo’ is a traditional rhythm of Mallorca (the Mallorquins repopulated some Valencian areas in the 17th century). This version is from Ontinyent. L’U DEL TIO RITO. Another fandango. The singing is by Ahmed (Ya-Rayah) is a very popular subject in Algeria and other countries and talks about the problems of immigrants. LA TARARA. It’s the most well-known song here, but also in Tangiers. When we went to play there, in April of 2017, the people knew the song already. 5. Tell us something about the other musicians in the band. A majority of the members in this new group had never worked together before. Xus Belda y Aitor Sáez are two young percussionists but they already have a lot of experience. The bassist Oscar Cortés is also a veteran of this
type of music, as is the ‘dulzainero’ Ricard Soriano. Héctor Peropadre plays the lute, accordion, dulzania and tarota. Even though he is also young, he has a lot of experience in the world of traditional music; he’s well-known for his time in the group ‘Aspencat’. The trumpeter and trombonist Tony Molina has played, and continues to play, with some of the biggest international music stars. And finally, the three musicians that have accompanied me for years: Vicent Carrasco is a big traditional music veteran and stands out especially with his guitar playing. Juanra Martí is a ‘dulzainero’ with an impressive curriculum. Aside from playing strings, Pere Ródenas is the album’s producer and arranger of all the songs.
