Welcome
With its crisp air and vibrant colors, fall in the Bay Area is my favorite time of the year. It makes for the ideal time to embark on exciting adventures throughout the region, from San Francisco to serene Marin, and to the renowned wine havens of Napa and Sonoma — there is something for everyone.
If you’re looking for things to do, Golden Gate Park is a must-visit location with its iconic museums like the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Museum. Rent one of the paddle boats at Stowe Lake for a tranquil experience in the middle of the park. Up the road, the Presidio offers a rich history at the visitor center and some delightful dining options like Dalida and the Presidio Social Club, along with the new Tunnel Tops that offer breathtaking views of the Bay.
Heading north to Napa and Sonoma, a detour to the Marin Headlands promises awe-inspiring vistas of the Golden Gate Bridge, with the historic bunkers from WWII era as a bonus. Some of the towns in Marin are not to be missed for hiking, shopping and of course the culinary scene — Sausalito, Tiburon, Mill Valley to name a few.
I’m often asked what some of my favorite tasting rooms and other things to do in Napa and Sonoma are. Well, here are a few: Louis M. Martini in St. Helena, Anaba in Sonoma, St. Francis Winery in Santa Rosa and JCB in Yountville. And if you have time, you won’t regret indulging in a mud bath at Roman Spa or Dr. Wilkinson’s in Calistoga — pure bliss!
The pages of this issue are filled with additional listings. But if that is still not enough, download our brand new Local Getaways App. It features an extensive array of restaurants, wineries, activities, and exclusive deals, ensuring an unforgettable stay.
I hope you enjoy your time here and trust that you will be back!
Cheers,

A HISTORY OF HARVEST
Sonoma County and Napa Valley’s close relationship with the wine industry was established as early as the 1800s. In 1832, a Spanish Franciscan monk named Padre Jose Altimera had planted grape vines at one of his missions.
This continued to grow with others planting vineyards as well, and it wasn’t long before the Napa and Sonoma area became recognized for its massive and prominent contribution to the wine industry. There are currently over 425 wineries in Sonoma County, and more than 400 in Napa Valley.
For close to 200 years, the Napa Valley and Sonoma County area has been participating in the annual fall harvest — this includes the harvesting of grapes to be used for wine, also known as crush.
With this tradition has come celebration, and an abundance of activities are at your disposal to do so. There are parties, dinners, festivals and much more, all catering to a variety of audiences.
If you’re looking for a vibrant cultural experience just steps away from downtown, San Francisco’s Chinatown is the place to go. San Francisco boasts the oldest and one of the largest Chinatowns in North America — a mustvisit destination for tourists and locals alike. Established in the mid-19th century during the California Gold Rush, the area has remained a lively enclave that retains Chinese and Chinese-American culture. Driven out of the greater city by discriminatory housing and labor policies, San Francisco’s first Chinese residents created this self-contained neighborhood in the heart of the city. Today, Chinatown remains a symbol of resilience whose bustling streets and hidden treasures attract millions of visitors each year. Pass through the iconic Dragon Gate and explore the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage, mouthwatering cuisine and fascinating history.
Eat:
Chinatown is a food-lover’s paradise. Indulge in an opulent dining experience with award-winning cuisine at Empress by Boon, whose iconic location previously housed the storied banquet hall Empress by China. Check out Li Po Lounge for one of their signature Chinese mai tais or grab a beer at Red’s, Chinatown’s oldest bar. The Michelin-starred Mister Jiu’s and its upstairs Moongate Lounge are well worth a visit — this ambitious project by chef Brandon Jew has defined modern Cantonese fine dining and now features a new
tasting menu. And don’t miss the long-standing House of Nanking: now popularly considered a Chinatown institution, it attracts long lines eagerly awaiting familystyle portions of Shanghainese cooking.
Do:
Shop on the bustling Grant Alley, or wander off the main streets to explore Waverly Place and Ross Alley, where you’ll find traditional Chinese markets, shops and tea houses, as well as the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory — here you can witness the art of fortune cookie making and savor warm, freshly-made cookies. Check out the Old Cathedral of St. Mary, the first cathedral in California, and learn about Chinese spiritual practices at the Tin How Temple. Stop by Portsmouth Square, a popular spot for tai chi and chess often called the “heart” of Chinatown, or embark on a guided walking tour to explore the sights with a dose of history.
Art and Culture:
Discover the colorful murals that embellish the neighborhood, telling stories of Chinese-American identity and community. Or, if you’re able, plan your visit to coincide with Chinatown’s Autumn Moon Festival (September or October) or Chinese New Year Parade (January or February). These vibrant festivals include lion dances, dragon parades, arts and crafts, food vendors and a variety of cultural performances.

Fall Arts Openings
On September 8, the 2023–24 season of the San Francisco Opera launches with Opera Ball, a gala concert featuring soprano Aleksandra Kurzak and, in his first appearance, tenor Roberto Alagna under the baton of music director Eun Sun Kim. On Sunday, September 10, Kim, the Orchestra and the Company’s vocal soloists will go to Robin Williams Meadow in Golden Gate Park for the annual Opera in the Park free concert. Then, on Tuesday, September 12, Kim will lead the Company in the first full opera of the season, Verdi’s Il Trovatore.
Three new works co-commissioned by San Francisco Opera punctuate the Company’s 101st season. First, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs by Bay Area composer Mason Bates and Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Mark Campbell takes the stage in September with baritone John Moore as eponymous iconoclastic Steve Jobs, whose ideas helped reshape our world. Omar, the first opera by Grammy Award-winning artist Rhiannon Giddens in collaboration with composer Michael Abels, brings an urgent, American story to the War Memorial Opera House in November. The acclaimed new work Innocence, from esteemed Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho with libretto by Sofi Oksanen and text dramaturgy and multilingual translations by Aleksi Barrière, has its American premiere in June 2024. It’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
September 22 marks the opening of the San Francisco Symphony with the Opening Night Gala concert. Co-chaired by Amy Christodoulo and Julie Liegl, the Gala begins at 5:30pm with red carpet arrivals and a pre-concert lobby reception for all attendees with complimentary sparkling wine and light bites. Richard Strauss’s Don Juan opens the program, followed by Gustav Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, featuring baritone Simon Keenlyside. The program also includes Anders Hillborg’s Rap Notes, with live rappers squaring off against artificial intelligence-generated verse in a piece highlighting both human creativity and technological prowess. Salonen and the Orchestra close the program with Maurice Ravel’s captivating and hypnotic Boléro. For an elevated experience, patrons have the option to reserve one of two post-concert Gala Dinner packages. Proceeds from the Opening Night Gala directly support the Symphony’s education, community and artistic programs serving more than 75,000 people each year. This year, purchasers of a Gala Dinner package have the option of making an additional contribution in support of the SF Symphony’s 44th annual All San Francisco concert, on September 23. This beloved opening week concert welcomes and pays tribute to many of the impactful community groups and nonprofit organizations across the Bay Area for their invaluable work in enriching our city. sfopera.com, sfsymphony.org

Meadowood’s Leigh Anne Doecki Shares not-to-be-missed Wine Country Spots
By Leigh Anne DoeckiQ: Favorite fall activities in the Wine Country?
Fall can be the most beautiful time of the year to ride the bike trails or take a guided bike tour. Here at Meadowood Napa Valley, we recommend the Napa Valley Vine Trail, a 12-mile walking and biking trail that will eventually extend from Calistoga to the Vallejo Ferry Terminal. There are several bike rental agencies in Yountville and Napa — e-bikes make the experience even more leisurely.
Q: Best things to do with a family?
For a family with young children, we recommend Hoopes Vineyard’s animal sanctuary, Oasis by Hoopes. The adults can sip wine as the entire family strolls through the regenerative farm and the animal sanctuary. The Oasis is home to rescue ducks and chickens, a donkey, potbellied and mini pigs, and don’t forget the goats! It’s just enough to delight toddlers, children, and teens, as well as the young at heart.
Q: Any new hot spots that are worth the hype?
Chef Christopher Kostow and his wife and business partner, Martina, reopened Ciccio in Yountville as managing partners. The space originally opened in 1916 as an Italian market and was opened as Ciccio in 2012 by the Altamura family, who remain owners. The building maintains the word “MARKET” on its red façade, an homage to its origins. Chef Kostow has kept much of the classic menu, including house-made pastas and an incredible Caesar salad.
Q: Best example of authentic Wine Country
I do believe that Napa Valley has its own brand of hospitality. As our Meadowood team visits wineries
and venues, I am often struck by the graciousness and kindness of the estate hosts and managers. One feels so welcome when met with a beautiful glass of bubbles or Sauvignon Blanc and greeted like an old friend. Many tasting rooms are in family homes.
Q: Best towns to walk through?
A: I love walking through Calistoga. It’s small and charming, with incredible food and interesting shops. One of our favorite places is Sam’s General Store, named after the founder of Calistoga, Sam Brannan. Sam’s General Store is the only cottage built by Sam Brannan still standing. It is a perfect spot for picking up a slice of breakfast quiche, a sandwich, or a picnic for later. Many of us also have a soft spot for the restaurant Lovina — owned by Jennifer Bennett, who previously owned Zazie in San Francisco.
Q: Best hikes?
A: We are fortunate to be surrounded by so many hiking trails, many with spectacular views. Here at Meadowood, we have three miles of hiking trails surrounding the property. For guests looking for a family hike, we recommend Bothe-Napa State Park, which offers more leisurely hiking trails that take you through forests and redwood groves.
After more than 20 years as a hotel concierge in San Francisco, Leigh Anne is honored to join the Estate Host team as Chef Concierge at Meadowood Napa Valley. Discovering the valley constantly provides new experiences, surprises, and education. Leigh Anne currently serves as president of Les Clefs d’Or USA, the only national association of professional hotel concierges.
