SPRING 2025

L O O K U P

ECLIPSE, MOON, AND MARS ECLIPSE, MOON, AND MARS

Turn your eyes to the skies this spring. Feel the awe of a total solar eclipse, meet NASA’s Mars rovers and orbiters, and get ready to be amazed by the stunning natural phenomena in outer space.

In the Know

The InterContinental San Francisco’s chief concierge, William Sutton, shares tips for what makes the city special in springtime.

Best spring activities in San Francisco?

Spring in San Francisco is a wonderful time to explore the city’s unique culture, beautiful parks and stunning natural scenery. Spring is perfect for visiting the 55-acre San Francisco Botanical Garden, where you can see a wide variety of plants in bloom. Or, take a stroll through the peaceful Japanese Tea Garden, which is beautiful in spring with blooming cherry blossoms. More spring activities you can enjoy in the city are picnicking and biking. Golden Gate Park has plenty of open space for picnics, and it’s a great spot for cycling, especially as the weather warms up.

Best family-friendly spring activities in the area?

Explore Crissy Field, with a walk along the beach with views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The mild spring weather makes it a perfect time for a relaxed walk, a picnic or kite flying. Or, take a ferry to Angel Island. Spring is a fantastic time for a day trip to Angel Island. Enjoy hiking, biking and exploring the island’s historical sites while avoiding the summer crowds.

New or under-the-radar spots in San Francisco that can’t be missed?

For a tranquil escape with panoramic views of the city, Tank Hill is a lesser-known spot worth visiting. It’s a short hike from the intersection of Clayton Street and Twin Peaks

Boulevard. And the Hamon Observation Tower, located within the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, offers free access to 360-degree views of San Francisco, including downtown and the Pacific Ocean.

Best place to get a seasonal or iconic drink?

Smuggler’s Cove is a renowned tiki bar offering a Mai Tai, a rum-based cocktail with lime, orgeat and curaçao, reflecting San Francisco’s tiki culture. Tosca Cafe is known for its house cappuccino, a warm blend of brandy, dark chocolate and steamed milk — perfect for a chilly evening.

Suggestions for a romantic evening?

Start with a sunset stroll along Crissy Field with Golden Gate Bridge views, followed by a cozy dinner at a waterfront restaurant like Waterbar. Enjoy dessert at Ghirardelli Square. End the night with a moonlit walk by the water or a cocktail at a rooftop bar like Charmaine’s. A blend of scenic beauty and intimate moments will make it unforgettable.

Born and raised here in the Bay Area, William Sutton started his hospitality career at the front desk of the Park Hyatt Hotel in 1996. After about a year of getting familiar with the hotel industry, he moved to the concierge desk and found a new life passion — assisting people from all over the world make the most of their time in the City by the Bay.

Spotlight Spring Blossoms

When the air begins to warm and the hills of the Bay Area shine bright green, you’ll know it’s also time for the annual display of color that the wildflower blooms bring. Not sure where you’ll see the best views? These spots throughout the Bay Area are a good place to start.

With 654 acres of property and a thriving ecosystem, a visit to Filoli is a great way to see spring blooms and simultaneously enjoy a peaceful day trip just 30 minutes south of San Francisco. April is the prime time, with a long list of in-bloom wonders ranging from flowering trees like apple or pear, to irises, roses and much more. Nestled in the foothills of Saratoga, a visit to Villa Montalvo means the chance to explore their gardens or hike the various trail loops around it to see the many native wildflowers in their natural habitat.

Each March, thousands of tulips blossom in Queen Wilhelmina Garden in Golden Gate Park against the backdrop of the iconic Dutch Windmill. Cherry blossoms are also in bloom around this time, and San Francisco’s Golden

Gate Park or Japantown are both great places to see the flowering trees.

Looking to double your wildflower viewing with more light hiking? Mori Point sits just south of Pacifica as 110 acres of naturally stunning land; wildflowers are abundant here particularly in April and May. Home to its own state park, Mount Diablo is an all-encompassing haven for spring blooms with a vast number of trails and ecosystems throughout — a couple of recommended trails include the Grand Loop Trail or the Oyster Point Trail. Wildflowers also make their appearance on Novato’s Mount Burdell Open Space Preserve, including by the vibrant California poppy. Near Corte Madera is the Ring Mountain Preserve, a spot popular for its lush hillside trails — including the Phyllis Ellman Loop Trail, which is one recommended option for the bloom chasers and will be alive with color from flowers like the yellow monkey flower or even the Tiburon mariposa lily, a flower that grows in only Marin County.

In the Know

Insider tips on Wine Country activities from Scott Trace, the restaurants general manager of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley.

Best spring activities in Wine Country?

In spring, Napa Valley reaches the height of its visual splendor. At Four Seasons Napa Valley, the patios at Auro and TRUSS offer breathtaking views of the Calistoga mountains and vineyards, where vibrant colors and fresh seasonal aromas come alive. A scenic drive along the valley floor reveals even more beauty, including the blooming mustard nestled between the vines. One of my most cherished spring memories is enjoying this ambiance at Four Seasons or venturing to the nearby patios of either the restaurant or bar at Auberge du Soleil to fully immerse in the magic of this remarkable season.

Best family-friendly spring activities in the area?

Enjoy biking on the newly completed Vine Trail, which stretches from Napa to Calistoga. Bike rentals are easy to find, and my top pick is the friendly team at Calistoga Bikeshop. Be sure to make a pit stop at Gott’s Roadside in St. Helena for a delicious bite to eat. For those who love hiking, explore the scenic trails at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park or the Pacific Union College Demonstration and Experimental Forest. Another family favorite is Oxbow Public Market in Napa, where a variety of food and shopping options come together in one convenient location.

New or under-the-radar activities in Wine Country that can’t be missed?

Discover exceptional wine tasting at Rivers-Marie Winery in Calistoga, where Thomas Rivers Brown crafts outstanding pinot noirs and cabernet sauvignons. Alternatively, visit FaitMain Tasting Lounge in St. Helena, where Benoit Touquette’s vibrant personality shines through every sip of his exquisite wines. For a unique and fun experience, head to Robert’s Tropical Table in Calistoga to enjoy creative tiki cocktails and delicious bites in a one-of-a-kind outdoor setting.

Best things to do/places to go when it’s raining?

On rainy days, one of my favorite things to do is visit Cameo Cinema in St. Helena. Before the movie, warm up by the fire with a drink at the bar in Goose & Gander, and afterward, enjoy dinner at Market. Honestly, any activity in Napa is delightful on a rainy day. The rain nourishes the valley, breathing life into the vines that help produce some of the world’s finest wines. Just remember to bring an umbrella and embrace the magic of the season!

Scott Trace’s passion for hospitality began in 2000 when he began his first role as a milkshake guru at the iconic Taylor’s Refresher, now Gott’s Roadside, in St. Helena. A focus on more formal dining led to roles at Michelin-starred restaurants like Martini House and Auberge du Soleil, and Trace joined Four Seasons in 2023.

Spotlight

New Tasting Rooms in Wine Country

The epicenters of California’s wine industry, Napa and Sonoma Counties, welcome countless new businesses dedicated to the region’s bounty every year. Among Napa Valley’s recent additions is Rutherford’s Bella Union Winery, a remodeled Belle Epoque sanctuary situated on 120 acres. Cabernets and blends delight in its modern setting, and hospitality shines between pours. Within the city of Napa, two family-owned wineries joined forces for the River Club, a cozy riverfront tasting room that screams “hidden gem.” Did I mention it’s both kid- and dog-friendly?

Not exactly new, Signorello has served 100% estategrown vintages on the Silverado Trail since 1977. But after the Atlas Fire forced closure in 2017, the winery reopened last summer for tasting by appointment in rebuilt facilities. Another known entity, Louis M. Martini’s winery in St. Helena debuted a permanent art installation, Two Untitled Maps (An Alchemical SelfPortrait) by Abraham Cruzvillegas. Visitors can ponder the transformative experience of winemaking while viewing the piece’s complex geometric intersections. For folks tired of wine, consider two neighboring spots in downtown Napa, both just over a year old: the Garden by Tannery Bend Beerworks for beer and Chispa Bar for tequila.

On the Sonoma side of Wine Country, a stylish, volcanicthemed tasting room has popped up steps from Sonoma Plaza. Obsidian Base Camp’s wines are aged in Hungarian barrels, with grapes grown in two unusual climates, one a volcanic mountain and the other a bayside vineyard. Another picturesque Sonoma County town square, Healdsburg Plaza, has seen its share of openings too. The minimalist tasting room of Stressed Vines Cellars serves wines crafted from just that — old vines, high-altitude vineyards and other unconventional conditions. Or, if you prefer something light and sparkly, Healdsburg Bubble Bar may impress, with its European and Californian selections of Champagne, prosecco and brut. Sebastopol’s Kanzler Estate opened its tasting room last summer, nestled among vineyards of chardonnay and pinot noir (yes, they offer farm stays). And Freestone, a hamlet west of Sebastopol, gained its first tasting room last year with Black Kite Cellars, which pours single-vineyard pinot noir and chardonnay in a charming, rustic tasting room called Jasper House.
