Exceptional Service from Jennifer Bowman!

WOMEN + FOOD = COMMUNITY

I'M STILL SMILING in the afterglow of our 20th anniversary garden party last month. Thanks to the team of ladies who pulled it together, the day was a huge success: Nikki C. and her team including caterer extraordinaire Stacy Scott (page 28) and Stacey Dillon of 38north Design Co., who transformed a lawn into a magical space with multiple conversation hubs, food and drinks within easy reach and multiple Instagram-worthy spots. A highlight was meeting the many readers who bought a ticket and showed up on their own, the ultimate act of “supporting women” since we (270 Media) are a women-owned, mostly women-run company celebrating our 20th year of being in business here in Marin County. Bam! Looking around, I spotted many women (and men of course) we’ve featured throughout the past 20 years mingling,

connecting and taking in the beauty of Marin Art and Garden Center, IRL. Lesley Cesare’s good friend Dan Durkin sang a playlist including songs like, “I saw her today at the reception, a glass of wine in her hand,” creating the ideal mood for the day. In a national crisis of loneliness, let’s have more parties! For more photos, check out Donna Berry Glass’s write-up on page 108.

For the seventh year, our May issue is dedicated to “celebrating women.” Throughout these pages you’ll see many examples of ladies in our county stepping up and making a difference, from a young Mia, who’s made it her life’s purpose to feed those in need, to Lynda Balslev’s article on three women running businesses you’ll meet at our local farmers market. Still on the topic of food, our San Anselmo-based dream team, Kate McMillan and Bethie Martin, have curated a gorgeous and apparently approachable spring brunch menu. If you attempt these recipes, please tag us on the socials @marinmagazine. Since the subtheme of this issue became food, we are including Jeanne Cooper’s list of where to eat on your next trip to the Hawaiian islands. Locally owned island restaurants are crucial to keeping the culture available and our experience unique when visiting. During the pandemic, and then the aftermath of the Lahaina fire, I heard from many islanders they feared the Chickfil-As of the world coming in and taking over. Jeanne, our longtime contributor

for Marin Magazine and now Local Getaways, was the Hawaii travel editor for the San Francisco Chronicle for over 10 years, took hula lessons to learn more about Hawaiian culture and now lives on the Kohala Coast. For years, I read her “Hawaii Insider” column and now feel so fortunate that she is sharing her talent and deep love for the islands with us. She makes it look so easy to write articles like “What to Do” and “Where to Eat.” It’s not easy. Google has nothing on Jeanne.

Speaking of women in Hawaii, we have started a new concierge travel program, through Local Getaways, with Katarina Tualemoso, a Maui native and private chef who has worked in hospitality for nearly 30 years. After a consultation phone call, she can book your entire trip or, for a fee, send you a detailed itinerary, and you can book through Costco Travel or points, or whatever you choose.

Family History

“As an adopted person who found my birth family in 2019, I was fascinated by your article, ‘Reconnected.’ I was born and adopted when my American birth mother returned home pregnant after studying abroad, where she had a love affair with a man in Paris during the summer of ’69. Despite having some information about my mother and how I came to be, I was unable to meet her before she passed. However, after sending a DNA sample to 23andMe, I received a message from a man asking if I knew why we had enough shared DNA to be half-siblings. I have since developed a relationship with three half-brothers, who apparently always wanted a sister! I found some answers to mysterious health conditions and acquired a sense of wholeness and completeness that I didn’t fully have before. I encourage everyone to sign up with a genealogy website. You may think you know your family history, but you could discover some surprises!”

Room to Roam

An agreement to abate a large portion of ranching in Point Reyes leaves more land for tule elk and other wildlife.

A chapter has closed in the long-fought battle over land use in Point Reyes National Seashore. In January, 12 out of 14 ranches in the national seashore agreed to cease operations in 2026, in a settlement with the National Park Service and environmental groups. Fences will be torn down, cattle relocated and ranchers compensated. Of about 18,000 acres previously designated as agricultural land, 16,000 will be rezoned as a “scenic landscape zone.” In all, the park is 71,000 acres.

Ranching in Point Reyes predated its establishment as a national

seashore in 1964. In the years following the park’s founding, ranchers sold their properties to the National Park Service and have since leased the land from NPS. Litigation has surrounded land use in the park for decades, as concerns arose about ranching’s impact on the environment, especially for endemic tule elk which graze the land.

What are your thoughts on the balance of conservation and ranching in Point Reyes? Letters to the editor are welcome at editorial@marinmagazine.com.

Tips From Women Who Broke Through

“Any advice for women on being a leader?” That’s the question we posed to prominent women in our community, including the 2025 class of the Marin Women's Hall of Fame and leaders in the field of arts and culture. Here’s what they said.

Marin Women’s Hall of Fame 2025

Chantel Walker CEO and managing partner, CWISER Ventures

“Know your strengths, acknowledge your struggles, study the context, and understand your impact on others. From there, lead with intentionality, compassion, joy and a results orientation.”

Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D.

Author and speaker, feminist leader, psychiatrist

“Pay attention to the inner calling that moves you to speak up, even when it seems risky.”

Leading Voices in Arts and Culture GLASS CEILING?

Jenny Leung

Executive director of Chinese Culture Center SF

“My advice will be to lift up other women. Especially for women of color, we are taught there is a scarcity at the top, and that is not true. Support your fellow women leaders and build a supportive community to make change together.”

Judy Arnold Retired Marin County District 5 supervisor

“Watching how far women have come since I started in the ’60s until now, the best advice I can give to women today on being a leader is to not act like you’re playing from behind. Do the work, be prepared and then know you deserve to be at the table.”

Jodi Roberts

Executive director, MarinMOCA

Susan Gilmore

President and CEO, North Bay Children’s Center

“Lead by uplifting those around you, instilling confidence, resilience and purpose in the next generation of strong, empowered women.”

“At MarinMOCA, I've learned leadership transcends boundaries — artistic and geographic. Female leaders possess singular relational skills to bridge Marin’s often-fragmented communities. Art offers the perfect platform to weave connections across our divided region. Our mission extends beyond exhibitions. We're building a cohesive North Bay where collaboration replaces isolation.”

Socorro Romo

Executive director, West Marin Community Services

“Find the courage to fight for what you believe in. Base your leadership on your values. Lead with love and compassion and never give up!”

Dr. Soyoung Lee

The Barbara Bass Bakar Director and CEO of the Asian Art Museum

“First, speak your mind and be bold. Do not be shy about negotiating hard, being tenacious or being frank when the situation calls for it. Second, be strategic. A NEW VIEW OF ANGEL ISLAND’S CHINESE POEMS

Explore digitized poetry and more learning resources this May, which is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

In May 1970, the barracks on Angel Island were slated for demolition. But when a park ranger entered the off-limits building and saw Chinese poetry carved into its walls, the site’s cultural significance fueled a campaign to preserve its history.

Today the poetry carved in these walls can be read from anywhere, thanks to the “Poetry Finder” created by the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation. On their website (aiisf.org/ finder), viewers can go room to room, seeing calligraphy alongside translations into English and recordings in Cantonese or other Chinese dialects.

“Of all the immigrants from 80 different countries who were processed or detained on Angel Island, Chinese immigrants were held for the longest periods,” said AIISF’s executive director, Edward

NIXLE VS. ALERTMARIN

Changes to Marin’s emergency alert system

On April 3, subscribers to Nixle’s notification system got a surprising text: “The County of Marin is Moving Away from Nixle.” Marin’s Office of Emergency Management will now exclusively use AlertMarin to transmit critical instructions during emergency situations like wildfires, flooding or evacuations.

The county has already been using AlertMarin for emergency notifications — recall January’s tsunami warning and county communication about it by text and phone call.

So should you delete your Nixle account? Maybe not. Nixle will still be useful for short messages about local public safety information, like day-to-day awareness about road closures and areas of police activity. Several towns’ police and fire departments still use Nixle. Sign up for AlertMarin at alertmarin.org.

Tepporn, noting that detained migrants carved 200 poems into the barrack walls. “AIISF’s Poetry Finder is an important resource that will help visitors find and connect more deeply with their experiences and emotions.”

The AIISF website also provides free, downloadable curriculum guides designed for grades 3–12, including an illustrated activity book with stories of formerly detained arrivals, many of whom were of school age. These materials can be used before, after, in tandem with or in place of a trip to the island.

Angel Island’s Immigration Station operated from 1910 to 1940. Of about half a million arrivals to San Francisco during this period (a figure which includes mostly immigrants, but also some temporary visitors and American citizens), about 300,000 were detained at Angel Island. One-third of detainees were ethnically Chinese, and the next largest groups were Japanese at 85,000 individuals, South Asians at 8,000 and Russian and Jewish people at 8,000.

After it closed as an immigration station, Angel Island was also used to intern 700 Japanese Americans during World War II. But since the poems saved the Immigration Station from obscurity, it’s been a site to commemorate the history and contributions of the people who passed through its facilities.

Caterer to the Stars

from nonprofit fundraising galas to wed dings, funerals, private parties — and everything in between. For Stacy, food is not the star of the event, it’s about the people and the show put on for guests. As it turns out, this has been the secret sauce to her success, which has led to her being sought out as the caterer of choice for not only locals but also some of the biggest names in show business.

printed a set of business cards announcing my new venture and told everyone who would listen about my fledgling venture.

Eventually, I got my first opportunity to cater an event for a construction company that hired me to run his 400-person company picnic. Despite it being a total disaster, I had fun, learned a ton from the experience and was hooked. That was 38 years ago.

Any lessons you’ve learned along the way that you’d like to share? Your reputation can be everything in this business.

One of my first big referrals was a party for a well-known billionaire family in Sea Cliff. I wanted to make an impression, so I branded the cocktail napkins, aprons and even the band with my logo. While the party itself was a success, the hostess later told me, “I really appreciate what you did, and we plan to hire you again. But next time, no logo items. This is our house and our party.”

At the time, the common belief was marketing was really key for small businesses. However, I took her advice and stopped marketing myself entirely. It felt risky, but this client and her network referred me to others. Soon, my business took off, growing purely through word of mouth. To this day, I don’t even have a website.

What about some of your zaniest and most memorable experiences? Before they created an in-house food service program, one of my big clients was the San Francisco Zoo. We used to do parties in the Lion House and in the Insect House. It was pure wildness.

There was that one event in Marin that turned out to be a swingers party. My children have only worked for me on very rare occasions, but it just so happened my college-age daughter was home and working that party. She called me around 11 p.m., and said a bit frantically, “Mom, please come down to this party now and see what’s going on.”

Have any of those celebrities helped you change the way you approach your business?

Definitely. Years ago, I was fortunate enough to host a dinner for Martha Stewart and her San Francisco-based team. Of course, everyone knows that Martha is the grand doyenne of entertaining and is highly meticulous. She wanted a Wine Country-themed event for this

particular dinner held at a rented house in Belvedere. The party was magnificent and beautiful. I met her, and she loved it.

Three weeks later I got a phone call from Martha’s personal assistant, who said, “You did an absolutely beautiful job. But Martha would like you to know that since the color scheme was persimmon (orange) and pomegranate (purple), it would’ve been lovely if the servers were wearing ties in one of those two colors to all tie it in.”

That’s Martha Stewart’s level of perfection and attention to detail. It was such an eye-opener. It made me realize that I needed to start looking at my events the way she does.

Then there are those stories that just warm my heart, including two recent experiences involving Bruce Springsteen and Robert Plant. Springsteen is one of my all-time favorites, so handling his backstage catering was quite an honor. He gifted me and each one of my staff a concert sweatshirt. These were not the kind you can buy, but ones only available to his own crew.

Also, one of my joys last year was meeting Robert Plant when we catered backstage for him and his crew. We had a lovely, memorable conversation, and he was just such a nice man.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Yes. Some of my most gratifying experiences have centered on very personal and smaller events, such as family memorial services. We work with whatever budget that family has and make it lovely for them so that they can just be with their friends and family.

Lastly, as someone who truly struggled as a young woman, I want to remind everyone out there that anything is possible, so believe in yourself and keep going. Also, when you find success, don’t forget to give back!

A Seasonal Menu for Your Next Open House Brunch

Whether you’re constructing the maypole for May Day festivities, donning chapeaus for the ultimate Kentucky Derby viewing (add mint julep) or honoring Mom, we wanted to make sure you are prepared to host the best brunch on the block.

On the menu:

Southern biscuits with ham and mustard

Asparagus and smoked gouda puff pastry bundles

Deviled eggs with smoked salmon and chives

Chilled beet and yogurt soup shooters

Pink Champagne cocktail

RECIPES AND STORY BY: KATE MCMILLAN
FOOD STYLING AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY: BETHIE MARTIN

Southern Biscuits with Ham and Mustard

A traditional honeybaked ham with homemade fresh-out-of-the-oven biscuits will serve as the perfect centerpiece at your Mother’s Day celebration. Not only is it beautiful and delicious, but it is a fantastic and easy way to serve a crowd. Set out sliced ham, biscuits and a few types of mustard and let guests make their own biscuit sandwiches. The key to a flaky biscuit is working with cold ingredients and folding the dough to create layers. Biscuits are simple to make and so worth the effort!

Yields 9 biscuits

6 tablespoons very cold unsalted butter

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons baking powder

¼ teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon granulated sugar

½ teaspoon Kosher salt

¾ cup plus 2 tablespoons very cold buttermilk

1 honey baked spiral-cut ham

Variety of mustards

Cut the butter into small pieces and place it in a bowl in the refrigerator while you preheat the oven.

Preheat the oven to 425°F.

Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt to the base of a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse a few times to combine. Add the cold butter and pulse until the butter is in tiny pieces, about 30 pulses.

Transfer the flour mixture to a large bowl, create a well in the center and add the buttermilk. Stir until the dough starts to come together and then dump onto a floured work surface. Lightly knead the dough, just enough to form a soft dough. Shape the dough into a ¾-inch rectangle and then fold the dough over, into thirds. Rotate the dough 90 degrees, shape into a ¾-inch thick rectangle and fold into thirds again. Repeat this process one more time, ending in a ¾-inch thick rectangle.

Using a 2 ½-inch round cookie cutter, cut 6 biscuits. Make sure you cut straight down and out, do not rotate the cutter. Gather dough scraps and cut a few more biscuits for a total of 9. Place biscuits in a 9-inch cast iron skillet, so that biscuits are touching (this will help them to rise). Bake until golden brown, about 18 minutes.

To serve, set out the ham, biscuits and mustards for guests to make their own biscuit sandwiches.

Asparagus and Smoked Gouda Puff Pastry Bundles

Nothing screams spring produce quite like fresh asparagus. These cheesy asparagus bundles are so beautiful and the dough is perfectly flaky and delightful. This dish is also hearty enough to serve as a vegetarian main dish. You can substitute any cheese in here that you like, including Gruyere, blue cheese or fontina. When buying asparagus you want to look for bright green stalks and tips that are closed and compact.

Serves 12

2 bundles asparagus, woody ends trimmed

1 ½ tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed ¼ cup Dijon mustard

8 ounces smoked gouda, shredded

1 egg

Preheat the oven to 425°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Toss the asparagus in a large mixing bowl with the olive oil and balsamic and season with salt and pepper.

On a lightly floured work surface, roll out one of the puff pastry sheets to about a 13-inch square. Cut into six equal squares. Working at a diagonal, top each puff pastry square with 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 3 asparagus spears and 1 heaping tablespoon of cheese. Lift the two opposite sides of the puff pastry to enclose the asparagus making sure the top point is tucked underneath the bundle (this will ensure that it doesn’t open during baking). Repeat this process with the second puff pastry sheet and place bundles on the prepared baking sheets.

In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water and then, using a pastry brush, brush the puff pastry with the egg wash.

Transfer to the oven and bake, rotating pans halfway through cooking, until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Deviled Eggs with Smoked Salmon and Chives

Nothing disappears faster than delicious creamy deviled eggs. Ever the crowd-pleaser, this is a terrific way to offer a gluten-free and protein-packed option for guests. We’ve leveled-up this classic by topping them with a salty bite of smoked salmon and fresh chives. You can make these a full day in advance and top with garnishes when you are ready to serve.

Serves 10

10 large eggs

5 tablespoons best quality mayonnaise

2 teaspoons yellow mustard

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

4 ounces thinly sliced smoked salmon

1 bunch fresh chives, chopped

Place the eggs in a pan and cover with cold water until there is 1 inch of water above the eggs. Set the pan over medium-high heat on the stove and bring to a boil. Turn off the heat, cover the pan and let sit for 10 minutes. Fill a large bowl with ice and water and transfer the eggs to the ice bath for 10 minutes. Peel eggs and slice in half, lengthwise.

Remove the yolks from the eggs and add them to a mixing bowl. Using a fork, mash the yolks and then stir in the mayonnaise, mustard and salt and pepper, to taste.

Place the egg whites on a serving platter. Pipe or spoon the yolk mixture into the whites. Garnish with a small piece of smoked salmon and sprinkle with chives.

Entertain like a pro

Use seasonal ingredients for the most flavorful and vibrant results.

Plan a menu that is all room temperature.

Set out platters and label them with Post-it notes the day before.

Have a self-serve bar. Simply set out all the ingredients, stemware and printed instructions in a pretty frame and let guests help themselves. We love Marin local @jenlovestoletter for her stunning signage.

Fill in with store-bought items like a bowl of fresh strawberries, candies and pastries from your favorite local bakery.

Roasted Beet and Yogurt Soup

This earthy, healthy and beautiful soup comes together with just a few simple ingredients. We’re serving this chilled soup in shot glasses to show off the stunning color, but shooters are also a great way to feed a crowd with no spoons necessary. You can set out extra soup in a container with a spout so guests can refill their glasses, as desired. If you are short on time, you can find cooked and peeled beets in the produce section of most grocery stores.

Yields about 5 cups

4–5 small beets, trimmed and scrubbed

2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 small cloves garlic, crushed

2 tablespoons finely chopped shallots

3 cups plain Greek yogurt, plus more for garnish

Dill sprigs for garnish

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Place a large piece of aluminum foil on a baking sheet and pile the beets into the middle. Drizzle the beets with the olive oil and season generously with salt and pepper. Gather the foil around the beets, seal tightly and transfer the baking sheet to the oven. Roast until the beets are fork-tender, about an hour. Cool to room temperature. Use paper towels to remove the skins and roughly chop the beets.

Add the beets, garlic, shallots, yogurt, ¾ teaspoon salt and ½ teaspoon pepper to a bowl and use an immersion blender to puree until completely smooth. This is meant to be a thick soup but if you want a thinner consistency, you can add water or broth. You can serve this soup at room temperature or chill for up to 24 hours.

To serve, pour soup into 2-ounce shot glasses and top with Greek yogurt and a sprig of dill.

Pink Champagne Cocktail

Every party needs a great signature cocktail and nothing is more celebratory than Champagne. This one, with fresh grapefruit juice and thyme simple syrup, is perfectly pretty in pink and absolutely delicious. Gin can be replaced by vodka or tequila, and for a zeroproof cocktail, combine grapefruit juice, sparkling water and thyme simple syrup. You can set this up as a DIY bar or multiply the recipe by the number of guests for a big batch version. Just don’t add the Champagne until you are ready to serve in order to preserve those party bubbles!

Makes 1 cocktail

Thyme Simple Syrup:

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup water

5 sprigs fresh thyme

Pink Champagne Cocktail:

½ cup granulated sugar, for rim of glass

3 ounces freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice

2 ounces top-shelf gin

1 ounce thyme simple syrup

Champagne, chilled

Thyme sprigs, for garnish

Grapefruit slices, for garnish

To make the simple syrup, place the sugar, water and thyme sprigs in a small saucepan over medium heat. Swirling the pan, cook until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to steep for 30 minutes. Discard the thyme sprigs.

Place the sugar on a small plate or in a shallow bowl. Rub the rim of a cocktail glass with a grapefruit wedge and then dip into the sugar to coat the rim. Set aside.

To make the cocktail, add the grapefruit juice, gin and 1 ounce thyme simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds and pour into the sugar-rimmed glass. Top the cocktail with 1–2 ounces of Champagne. Garnish with a thyme sprig and grapefruit wedge and serve at once.

Three Women Shining Stars at Marin’s Farmers Markets

Spotlighting three Marin-based women who own and operate thriving food businesses at our local farmers markets.

MM: What inspired you to start your business?

Stacey: I developed a love of food, specifically food shared in community, when I launched a meal kit business after graduate school. This company, Tomato Sherpa, created dinner kits delivered to businesses around the Bay Area for employees to take home to cook. During our demos, I connected with customers and saw how our meals helped them share food in a new way, with families and friends coming together around cooking. While the business needed much more funding than I was able to raise to succeed, it gave me something I didn't want to let go of.

Years later, when the pandemic set in, I did what many people did: I got a sourdough starter from a friend and began making bread. It was a fun distraction at first, then it became an obsession. I delivered bread to my neighbors’ mailboxes to “try this batch.” When they began to request it more regularly, I launched a website for ordering the breads and some of my favorite baked goods. With most of Marin stuck at home, my timing was good, and word got out about my website. Quickly, I enlisted friends, my kids and my mom to help fulfill orders that we put on a baker’s rack by my front door for pick-up.

/ Fairfax / Mill Valley Farmers Markets

Today we are at seven to nine farmers markets weekly and producing in a commercial bakery that we built out in San Rafael. I started as a complete novice and have relied on the skills of the small Waldscraft team. Chef Erick AngelesMenendez has been with me now for two years and has patiently coached me and helped me scale our batches and build our production. We have developed a broad range of items including laminated pastries, a wheat-free selection and many seasonal items. We source our produce from the farmers markets where we

participate, and we use organic ingredients that are locally sourced as much as we can.

MM: What are your most popular items, and do you provide gluten-free or vegan items?

Stacey: Some of our most popular items include our wheat-free and seedbased “wunderbread,” adventure bars (granola bars), savory galettes (our spinach and mushroom with goat cheese is a big hit), and seasonal pastries. Our chocolate

beet cake is vegan and wheat-free and sells out very fast.

We have many wheat-free items which are popular because we focus on recipes that are meant to be made with alternative flours, such as our chocolate buckwheat cookies. We make a wheatfree cornmeal and almond upside-down cake with seasonal fruit, such as apricots which I can source in the spring.

MM: What advice would you give to other women who want to start a food business?

Stacey: My advice for women interested in starting a food business, or any business really, is to start small and get in front of your customers as you develop. I've done it both ways and have seen the difference. Maintaining confidence and pushing aside self-doubt is a challenge for so many of us, so I rely on my regular customers and a select community to remind me of my strengths when I doubt myself. Find your people who will support you on the hard days!

MM: What do you love most about selling at the farmer’s market?

Stacey: I love the rush of the five- to six-hour sales window. We set up to move a lot of pastry at these markets, and that excitement suits my personality.

People shop differently at the farmers market. There is an element of fun that you can't get at a store, and this makes customer interactions engaging and personal. Customers will share candid feedback with the intention of encouraging me and helping me to improve and refine my recipes.

My relationships with vendors at the markets are another unexpected benefit. I have developed personal relationships with my suppliers, a huge supportive network of food-loving entrepreneurs and friends that I not only look forward to seeing each week, but who deeply understand the challenges we face as small business owners.

Stacey Waldspurger

MM: What inspired you to start your business and sell soups and baby food at the farmers market?

Aryan: I am an accidental business owner. I graduated from law school and worked in corporate firms for over 20 years before I left law and attended culinary school. I then worked in San Francisco restaurants for eight years, learning from some of their top chefs.

After I stopped working in restaurants, an unfortunate experience in my life became the bridge to my soup business, which is now one of the best things in my life: I was extremely sick with a cold and couldn’t find a single soup in a Marin store that was nutritious, let alone delicious. All the soups I found in Marin had cream, flours, sugars or other fillers. I am Iranian and grew up with my mom’s and grandmothers’ soups that were made with the most beautiful fresh ingredients. Our culture has eaten farm-to-table for centuries, well before it became a fad. I decided then to make my own nutrient-dense soups with restaurant-quality ingredients and finesse. As my business grew, and due to customer requests, I now provide freshly made entrees and organic baby food. Many of my customers feed my soups to their infants as their first food. My soups are also suitable for seniors and people going through medical treatments, who need nutrient-rich food that is free of oils, alliums, salt and spice.

MM: What are your most popular soups?

AryanAbbassiAlexandra

As

seen at:

Marin Country Mart Farmers Market at Larkspur Landing Sunday Market at San Rafael Civic Center

Aryan: Many! A few include Thai coconut chicken curry, wild mushroom, summer gazpacho, vegan Moroccan harira, split pea and smoked ham. Popular entrees include Moroccan lamb tagine, French cassoulet with duck confit and

Southwest chili with cornbread.

MM: Do you have seasonal specialties for spring?

Aryan: Yes. Persian New Year is at the beginning of the Spring Equinox, so Persian pomegranate soup is a specialty. Also, matzo ball soup for Passover, a vegan English pea and mint soup and spring lamb entrees.

MM: Who is your typical client?

Aryan: My customers are 90% women. The remaining 10% are men who usually come to shop at the direction of their significant others. People who have dietary restrictions also buy my soup, as well as parents who seek healthy food for their children and family dinners, lunches and parties.

MM: What is the most rewarding part of selling at the farmers market?

Aryan: I love my customers, and my fellow vendors. The most rewarding part is my interaction with each customer and the love, inspiration and support they bring to me each week. After nine years, many of them are like family.

MM: Do you have any advice you would give to other women wanting to start a food business?

Aryan: Owning a food business, even a very small one, is not for the faint of heart. There are many ups and downs, trials and errors and financial highs and lows, not to mention the physical strain — and the increase in the price of goods that makes my visa bill look like it was the victim of identity theft each month!

Aryan Alexandra Abbassi

MM: What inspired you to start selling Japanese home-cooked food at the farmers market?

Yuko: I started Kinoko in 2022. I used to work at Brickmaiden Breads in Point Reyes as a pastry baker, where I learned a lot. Cooking has always been my interest but never as a business, until I thought I could introduce dishes that I grew up with. My mom is a great cook, and we always had her home-cooked meals at home.

I have always enjoyed visiting farmers markets, and while I thought about having a stall at the market, it was my ex-coworker from Brickmaiden who encouraged me to contact our local farmers market manager. That was my starting point.

MM: What types of dishes do you offer?

Yuko: I make Japanese rice balls (onigiri), rice bowls (donburi) and mochi muffins.

MM: What’s your most popular dish?

Yuko: Salmon onigiri.

MM: Do you have any seasonal spring specialties?

Yuko: Yes, I pick cherry blossoms in the spring and preserve them in salt. The salted cherry blossoms are a seasonal rice ball filling.

MM: What’s the most rewarding part of selling at the farmers market?

Yuko: My customers who return for more, and when some of them try to make their own Japanese food at home. I feel as though I have inspired them by sharing and spreading the idea of Japanese home cooking.

MM: What’s the biggest challenge of running a food stall at the farmers market?

Yuko: Trying to remember everything I need to operate at the farmers market. We carry a lot of ingredients and equipment to serve you!

MARIN’S SHIFTING SHORELINE:

THE CONVERSATION HAS STARTED AND YOUR VOICE MATTERS.

Near San Rafael Creek, two dads push their toddlers in swings, a bicyclist rides by and a woman walks her dog. For Marina Palma, it is a beautiful Saturday in the Canal community. And although it looks like everyone is on dry land, they are, in fact, in the bottom of a bowl, with their streets and homes sinking below the bay.

Palma, a longtime resident and advocate of her community, recently became a member of the San Rafael steering committee on sea level rise so that she can educate and prepare others. Many people don’t understand that the flooding already happening during high tides and storms is going to get worse.

“We are at risk of losing our homes, and our community would be destroyed,” Palma said. “Together we should make an effort to minimize the effects these floods could have.”

Now is the time for communities to get together throughout Marin County to discuss and strategize next steps to prepare for the rising sea.

“Right now, yards and people’s gardens are keeping the water out,” said Kate Hagemann, San Rafael city climate adaptation planner. “The pumps are able to keep up but they aren’t designed to keep out the ocean.”

EXPANDING OCEAN

The sea surrounding Marin on three sides is one of its most beautiful features. And yet, estimates predict that in 25 years the ocean will be about one foot higher than it is today.

But this isn’t a future problem. Anyone living east of 101 or biking the Mill Valley path or driving in Corte Madera knows

Marin is flooding now.

The Transportation Authority of Marin has identified 19 areas of vulnerability in the county. Mikaela Hiatt, an associate planner at TAM, says they are looking at a timeline of solutions and options, recognizing that some roads, such as evacuation routes, may need attention sooner. “Raising a road 6 inches won’t allow for long-term protection but it could provide access in the near-term,” she said.

We’re all connected by roads, many of which are on the county’s bay side, said Anne Richman, TAM’s executive director. Keeping roads passable is a safety issue.

“An impasse or a failure in one area can affect people who don’t live nearby,” she said. “Even if you live further inland, your ability to get around will be impacted.”

MORE WATER IS COMING

Predicting how high the water will rise or when is less important than preparing,

Cyclists navigate saltwater flooding the Mill Valley multiuse path Marina Palma
Community meeting in Sausalito
“ We need to plan for that water — whether it comes as storm surge or king tides or sea level rise.”

according to Chris Choo, assistant director of the Marin County Community Development Agency. “We need to plan for that water — whether it comes as storm surge or king tides or sea level rise.”

Planning for what some perceive as a “long-term emergency” is hard, Choo said, but it’s been getting easier. “When you see water rising and rising, waves crashing against your home… it’s humbling and frightening,” she said. “It hits at a gut level.”

Marin County Supervisor Stephanie Moulton-Peters agrees. “No one should be surprised about this anymore,” she said, and our changing climate “is an invitation to co-create the future.”

PLANNING NOW

Over the next months, Marin residents will be invited to workshops to provide ideas and feedback on how to manage flooding and higher seas. Leaders are working to comply with California Senate Bill 272, which directs the nine Bay Area counties to submit shoreline adaptation plans to the Bay Conservation and Development Commission.

Fortunately, Marin has a 10-year head start. The groundwork was laid by former Supervisor Kate Sears, who advocated for living with water sustainably, and Jack Liebster, who won a grant in 2015 for a two-year study to assess the county’s vulnerability to sea level rise. Choo managed that project, culminating in BayWAVE, an interactive map showing where water might flow at different levels and what was in the water’s way.

Early on, to help people imagine the future depth of water, Leslie Alden, at the time Sears’ aide, helped place custom viewfinders along the multiuse path in Mill Valley. When people looked through the viewfinders, they could see their current surroundings and then, with a push of a button, the same landscape covered in 3 feet of water.

“You have to show people,” said Alden, now executive director of Act Now Bay

Area. “When they have an immersive experience, they see it for themselves.”

DRAWING THE LINE

Once people understand Marin’s shorelines are on the move, a first step is to decide where to define the “resilient edge,” the line between land and water. On one side could be marshes and reefs and perhaps floating shops or parking barges. On the other side, buildings and roads could be elevated.

And, of course, all of these adaptation solutions are expensive.

At a January workshop in Sausalito, Matthijs Bouw, a Dutch architect and founder of One Architecture, emphasized that by working together, communities can pool resources to create shared benefits, like parks and ponds that hold stormwater runoff. “It’s more cohesive and cost-efficient but requires buy-in and coordination,” he said.

Participants at that meeting commented on different proposals and possible solutions. “I’m quite impressed by what’s being done with floating communities abroad and in New York City,” said Felicity Gordon, a designer and longtime houseboat resident. Despite misgivings about enlarging the number of floating homes, she enjoyed the workshop and was happy to be part of the discussion regarding her community. “I’m thrilled to see that there’s a long-term approach to addressing sea level rise.”

PROTECTING COMMUNITY

One of the guidelines from SB 272 is to prioritize underserved communities first. With the relationships they’ve built, the county is ready. “We have the ability to apply the equity lens, because we see the whole picture,” said Ariel Espiritu-Santo, assistant county executive. “That’s how we can help. We’re better when we’re together.”

And, she added, “Sea level rise doesn’t know jurisdictional boundaries.”

The Marin Climate Justice

Collaborative, a newly formed group that unites leaders from the Canal and Marin City, is making sure their vision is incorporated into plans: more green spaces, more affordable housing, better transit connections.

The challenge is to protect these communities without displacing the residents. With a large population of renters, gentrification is a concern. “The housing crisis is not separate from the climate crisis,” said Carly Finkle, senior policy manager of Canal Alliance.

The key is listening to the people who live in each community, Palma said. She encourages decisionmakers to get to know the residents of the Canal. “Let’s do what we need to do now so we can stay,” she added. “Our kids were born here and we want them to go to school here. We are Marin.”

MAKING YOUR VOICE HEARD

Individuals can shape how Marin adapts. Janelle Kellman, founder of the Center for Sea Rise Solutions, first became involved in Sausalito as a volunteer on the planning commission. “I saw a very real problem,” she said. “I wanted to get to the bottom of why Sausalito is flooding.”

In 2020, after getting elected to the city council, Kellman started a sea level rise task force. She’s helped win $2 million in funding, which made it possible for Sausalito to study its vulnerability.

Kellman, who is running for lieutenant governor in 2026, added, “If people see the power of local action, with real outcomes, I hope it will inspire them to say, ‘Hell yeah, that’s where I want to make a difference.’”

Next month, we'll dive into how to adapt to rising seas, and how nature-based solutions could help us preserve Marin's communities and the scenic beauty we love in Marin.

A CLAMSHELL BY ANY OTHER NAME

Part Two: Sustainable Packaging

HERE’S A DATA POINT TO PONDER: EVERY DAY, CALIFORNIANS DISPOSE OF ENOUGH PLASTIC TO FILL 290 OLYMPIC-SIZED SWIMMING POOLS. PACKAGING, INCLUDING TAKEOUT CONTAINERS FOR RESTAURANT MEALS, OCCUPIES 50% OF CALIFORNIA LANDFILLS.

Recognizing our problem with plastic pollution, state and local governments passed a bevy of regulations aimed at slimming down the garbage pile, including California Senate Bill 54 which bans the production of polystyrene (aka Styrofoam) containers for takeout. Though there are always loopholes, this push to eliminate forever plastics (polystyrene never biodegrades, just breaks into tiny pieces) trickles down to restaurants who must rethink their contribution to the takeout packaging pile.

MOLDED FIBER FOR THE COMPOSTABLE WIN

Cue the molded fiber clamshell. You know them: Roughly 9 inches by 9 inches and the color of vanilla bean ice cream, they are restaurateurs’ go-to when faced with a polystyrene-free world. “To compete from a price standpoint, molded fiber is one of the best options,” says Deven Young, vice president of sales at Santa Rosa’s World Centric, a seller of highquality, certified compostable products.

The pulping stream World Centric relies on for its molded pulp manufacture is largely happening in China, where, Young tells me, the pulp industry is advanced and benefits from a nearby abundance of sugarcane waste. “It is difficult for domestic manufacturing to compete with the quality and speed with which these products can be produced in Asia,” Young says.

Noting that styrene is completely

Bungalow Burger in takeout container

leak-proof but unsustainable, Young points to World Centric customers like Yum Brands’ restaurants KFC and Taco Bell. With takeout business often exceeding 60% of sales, these quickservice restaurants’ shift to molded fiber clamshells equals a significant reduction in styrene. “It performs well and it’s cost-effective compared to laminated paperboard, styrene and other less sustainable products,” Young says. “100% of the time, price is a consideration.”

PRICE IS ALWAYS TOP OF MIND

Though Sushi Ran owner Yoshi Tome does use compostable containers for ricebased dishes and other items at his fine dining restaurant in Sausalito, his team packs 100 to 200 Japanese-made wooden containers each night for takeout sushi. Each box can cost as much as $5. “How to justify the cost?” Tome asks. “It’s hard to make economic sense of it.”

The guest experience is the reason he continues the program. “They’re beautiful containers, not available in the United States,” Tome says. “Guests like it and we get so many compliments.”

Tome says the lightweight boxes are

reusable and, since they are wood, can be placed in the green bin for composting, but he doesn’t ask for them back. His takeout business, up from 1–2% in 2019 to 15% today, is a solid argument for the boxes’ cost. “We figured out a way to make food taste as good for takeout,” he says. “We are a business first and need to adjust to what guests want to have.”

THE TAKEOUT ROUTINE IS HERE TO STAY

Peter Schumacher, restaurateur at Mill Valley’s Bungalow 44 (as well as Buckeye Roadhouse, Playa and The Corner Bar) notes that, before Covid-19, maybe half a percent of total revenue came from takeout. Today, that number is around 5–7% of total revenue and feels like it is here to stay. “It’s become a routine for people,” Schumacher says. At Bungalow 44, Schumacher and his team source molded pulp clamshells for items like their Kickin’ Fried Chicken and Bungalow Burger. “We only do takeout for items that do well on takeout,” he says. Yes to takeout salmon and short ribs entrees and all the salads. No to oysters, flat bread and steak tartare.

But routine or no, following best practices for takeout can be complicated for even the most eco-conscious businesses. Marin’s rules, confusingly, vary by where a restaurant is located. Mill Valley and Sausalito have different rules than, say, San Rafael or Fairfax. Restaurants in unincorporated Marin have yet another set of rules, making rule-following difficult for small operators. While restaurateurs I spoke with wish for more even enforcement, self-regulation seems to be the rule of thumb. Some restaurants, such as Corte Madera’s Pacific Catch and Larkspur’s Hog Island participate in The Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean-friendly Restaurants Program, committing to use no expanded styrene or plastic water bottles or bags, and to offer only reusable foodware for onsite dining.

MAKING REUSABLES THE NORM

Certified as a B-Corp since 2010 and as a California Benefit Corporation since 2013, World Centric envisions compostables (according to their company mission statement) “as a sustainable alternative and necessary bridge to a more circular future” — a future where reusables are the norm. That’s where companies like San Francisco’s Sparkl Reusables come in.

In partnership with Zero Waste Marin and The Agricultural Institute of Marin, Sparkl launched a reusable foodware program at the Thursday Farmers Market in San Rafael earlier this year. All vendors at the market were given reusable containers, like large clamshells made of sturdy BPAfree polypropylene, or in recycling terms, Number 5 plastic. “We do a lot of highvolume projects,” says Sparkl CEO Paul Liotsakis. “This clamshell is good for over 1,000 uses.” Guests who purchased meals during the trial period, which ended in March, could place dirty clamshells, cups and plates in Sparkl’s bins. The company then washed them like a restaurant would and put them back into service.

Made in the USA, the clamshell is roughly 50% new and 50% recycled plastic. In an effort he calls “eco-championing,” Liotsakis repurposes retired products as trays for food trucks or delivery programs at Smith Ranch Homes, Marinwood Market and elsewhere. As of print time, the farmers market pilot is being evaluated for extension.

BUILDING SUSTAINABLE REUSABLE SYSTEMS

Lindsey Hoell, CEO of Hayward’s Dispatch Goods, launched her business in 2016 to supply restaurants with stainless steel takeout containers. “The return rates decreased and the economics changed,” Hoell says, making the business unsustainable. Hoell shifted the business model to higher volume food businesses where the economics made sense. That includes meal and grocery delivery for the likes of Stanford Hospital, Thistle, HelloFresh and AstraZeneca’s corporate campus. “Think about it like linen service,” Hoell says, where a business uses contractors who deliver clean linen while taking away soiled linen. “We do that but for packaging.” Her containers, value-engineered to be price-competitive with compostables, reduce the risk of lost inventory and the friction of the earlier business model.

Learning from earlier missteps, Dispatch Goods works to ensure clients build a system of reusables across their food business and don’t start with a single item, like a cup or a clamshell. “Typically, we see return rates of over 90% if they implement an entire system,” Hoell says. Return rates for one item pilots see a much lower return rate, in the 50–70% range. Ample opportunities for return — many bins in many places — are also key. Clearly marked bins further boost the return rate. “People learn the habit,” Hoell confirms.

STAINLESS STEEL IS STILL A REUSABLE RESTAURANT SOLUTION

Stainless steel containers can work for some food businesses. San Rafael’s Lotus Cuisine of India launched a tiffin program in 2019. Tiffins — stackable, round containers clipped together and, in India, delivered by dabbawallas from home cooks to office workers — are a traditional form of food delivery for at least 130 years. “Purchase the tiffin once and we pack the food in the tiffin,” says Alisha and Navjot Sroa, the restaurant’s secondgeneration owners.

On the restaurant’s takeout order page, click “tiffin” on the top navigation to select the proper size — two to six tiffins are available and guests pay a one-time fee of $12.95 for a two-tier, up to $29.95 for a six-tier — and indicate whether you are a new or an existing tiffin customer. When you pick up your order, your food will be packed in tiffins which can be returned infinitely to the restaurant for washing. “You can eat right from the tiffin,” Sroa says. Sroa estimates that 60% of their business is takeout, of which 20–25% is in tiffins. “Guests see others carrying out their orders and want in on it,” Sroa says. “People get hooked on it.”

SKELLY WINGARD, RN, MSN

In less than two years since Skelly Wingard took over the helm as CEO of By the Bay Health, she has transformed Marin’s first and oldest hospice into the largest independent nonprofit hospice and palliative care provider in Northern California. In the past year, By the Bay Health served more than 4,000 adults on hospice care, 200 palliative care patients, 100 children and their families, and more than 1,000 grief counseling services to local Bay Area communities. Supported by the generosity of donors in Marin, more than 700 grants for family caregivers totaling $4 million dollars were invested into the local community.

This year Wingard launched an innovative response to one of healthcare’s most pressing challenges – a serious shortage of nurses.

The Bay Area currently faces a 26% nursing shortage, particularly affecting the most vulnerable dependent on hospice, palliative, and home-based care. To continue By the Bay Health’s legacy of providing compassionate care regardless of location or the ability to pay, the organization’s groundbreaking Pathways to Care Careers initiative will build a sustainable, community-supported healthcare workforce through partnerships with local academic, education, and community organizations.

Heading to Hawaii? Consider supporting these local restaurants, which all support the islands' economy.

Oahu

Solera

The latest incarnation of fine dining in the Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach, boasts the same stunning ocean and Fort DeRussy park views the space in the eighth-floor lobby has always had, but the Hawaii Regional Cuisine is newly elevated (with prices to match). Caviar options, seafood platters and steaks are fairly straightforward; other mains offer intriguing touches of local flavors, such as the ulu (breadfruit) puree with the fresh catch and island-sourced koji marinated vegetables with beluga lentils, while breakfast is a lower-key but still locally sourced treat.

DON'T MISS

Save room for one of the elegant desserts from G. Lion Bakeshop, which will also provide whole cakes for celebrations when reserved in advance.

Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach, 383 Kalaimoku St, Honolulu, 808.729.9729

Hau Tree

The casual-chic beachfront dining room of Kaimana Beach Hotel is a deservedly popular brunch spot, offering multiple takes on eggs Benedict and a decadent “bougie blini” with lemon creme. It’s also a go-to spot for craft cocktails and bar bites before dinner. Pastas shine with proteins such as Kauai prawns, free-range chicken and fennel sausage.

DON’T MISS:

The hotel’s newly renovated, second-floor Kapua Lounge is also becoming an intimate oasis for artisan drinks, including pop-up collaborations with foodie-frenzy attractions like James Beard Awardwinning Bar Leather Apron.

Kaimana Beach Hotel, 2863 Kalakaua Ave, Honolulu, 808.923.1555

808 Craft House

Now open for lunch as well as dinner, this lively watering hole in Ko Olina Center and Station makes a great alternative to Ko Olina resort fare. On the drinks side, it offers Waikiki Brewing Company draft beers, rotating guest taps and another 20 brews in cans, many locally sourced, including hard cider and three non-alcoholic beers. On the food side, you can’t go wrong with a burger like the Founders Smash, which piles pineapple, avocado and cheddar atop a Wagyu patty on a housemade brioche bun.

DON’T MISS:

Start with the smoked ahi dip with veggie crudités, focaccia and Maui onion potato chips, and on Wednesdays and weekends, don’t forget to wave when the Hawaiian Railway Society open-air train passes by.

Ko Olina Center & Station, 92-1047 Olani St, Unit 1112, Kapolei, 808.888.2802

Botero Lounge

If the surrounding oversized nude sculptures of Colombian artist Fernando Botero aren’t to your taste, the wide-ranging, island-sourced menu in this central and buzzy lounge at the recently renovated Grand Wailea resort will surely have something that is. Executive chef Ryan Urig’s new menu has a good variety of handheld options, including the Maui hot chicken sandwich with pickled starfruit and grilled pineapple slaw and a smash burger with a Surfing Goat Dairy animalstyle sauce on a potato bun.

DON’T MISS:

Carnivore couples should spring for the Grand Wailea honey marinated tomahawk ribeye, accompanied by housemade pickles, bao buns and dragonfruit hoisin sauce.

Grand Wailea, 3850 Wailea Alanui Dr, Wailea, 808.875.1234

The Banyan Tree

Lots of living greenery softens the ambiance of the signature ocean-view restaurant of the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, where a special charcoal oven from Spain memorably smokes and grills seafood and other dishes at the same time. Book a seat at the communal chef’s table on Fridays for a five-course, “coastal cuisine” tasting menu that allows chef Ignacio Carballo to share stories of the island as well as its abundant produce and proteins.

DON’T MISS:

The grilled tako (octopus) in herb citrus marinade on a brightly flavored tomatobean tabbouleh gets an extra kick from an aioli incorporating nduja, made from spicy spreadable salami.

The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, 1 RitzCarlton Dr, Lahaina, 808.665.7089

Koast

Striking sunset views overlooking Molokini Crater may be the only thing drawing your attention from your food at this upscale collaboration by Top Chef Masters winner Chris Cosentino and spouses David and Alicia Soboda, who helped him open San Francisco’s Cockscomb. Local ingredients and bold flavors shine in dishes like the grilled hanger steak, seared over kiawe wood charcoal and served with charred Maui onions, wilted greens and a lilikoi au poivre sauce, and the Caesar salad, which features heart of palm and celery in lieu of romaine, plus an anchovy-studded creamy lemon vinaigrette.

DON’T MISS:

The Lopes Farm Pork dish is a weekly showcase featuring a different cut of pork butchered in-house and prepared with local, seasonal vegetables.

116 Wailea Ike Dr, Unit 2204, Wailea, 808.214.5545

Kauai

Kalaheo Café

Off the highway in the cooler uplands near Poipu, this busy restaurant has been packing ’em in since 1994 for fresh, filling and not-too-fancy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Dinner brings some pricier chef’s specials, a la strip steak or ribeye, but you can still opt for a gourmet hot sandwich like the Miami-style cubano roasted pork or housemade turkey burger.

DON’T MISS:

Substantial breakfast entrees like the house-baked cinnamon bread French toast or roasted veggie bowl can help fuel your Waimea Canyon hikes.

2-2560 Kaumualii Hwy, Kalaheo, 808.332.5858

Red Salt

Executive chef Noelani Planas grew up on Kauai before training with iconic chefs Jean-Marie Josselin, Wolfgang Puck and Joel Robuchon in Las Vegas. Since 2016, her exceptional skills in flavors and presentation have been on display in the somewhat austere dining room of Poipu’s luxury boutique hotel, Koa Kea. The chef’s tasting menu assembles top hits that you can also order a la carte: housemade ricotta with local honeycomb, vanilla bean seared mahi mahi on coconut-infused black rice, seared Hokkaido scallops with sweet local corn and flourless chocolate cake with Tahitian vanilla ice cream.

DON’T MISS:

Start your dinner with one of the inventive specialty rolls in the adjacent sushi bar, and return for breakfast to order the lemon pineapple souffle pancakes, well worth the half-hour wait.

Koa Kea Resort on Poipu Beach, 2251 Poipu Rd, Koloa, 808.742.4288

Napali Brewing Company

Blake and Kati Conant’s 10-barrel brewery in Wailua includes an attractively airy dining room with communal tables and a menu bridging local tastes and traditional brewpub fare, from kalua pig sliders and huli huli chicken to buffalo wings and pretzel bread. Seafood lovers will appreciate options for several kinds of poke, plus crab cakes, ceviche, smoked salmon and more. The considerate keiki menu includes chicken skewers, housemade mac and cheese, beef sliders and kalua pork with rice.

DON’T MISS:

“Smoke meat” — locally smoked pork butt — comes as an appetizer or as a plate, sauteed with onions in an oyster sauce and served with white rice and bok choy; both pair well with one of the seasonal German brews on tap.

4-361 Kuhio Hwy, Ste 100, Kapaa, 808.431.4170

Hawaii

the steak or sashimi. But given its remote location in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this restaurant does an admirable job of highlighting island ingredients and satisfying hearty appetites of hikers and road trippers, with live music at dinner. Local ribeye and strip steaks come with filling portions of local spinach and mushrooms or Okinawan sweet potatoes, while the seared blackened ahi sashimi gets an extra kick from pineapple salsa and a wasabi ginger aioli. The ample breakfast buffet has something for everybody, including eggs prepared to order and Hilo Coffee Mill brews.

DON’T MISS:

Warm up on a cool evening with a bowl of tomato bisque with cheese toast points, or make a light meal of it by pairing it with the delectable lobster crab cake with citrus aioli and a charred macadamia nut romesco.

1 Crater Rim Dr, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, 808.756.9625

Noio

Sushi has always been elevated at ‘ULU at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai on the Kona Coast. Now it has a literally elevated restaurant of its own: Noio, a clubby, ocean-view lounge on the second floor above ‘ULU, serving artisan cocktails, a rotating menu of nigiri and sashimi sushi, fresh seafood and other locally sourced entrees, and date nightworthy omakase dinners.

DON’T MISS:

The kanpachi bozushi, a hearty cylinder of kanpachi piled high with caviar, and the refreshing shore salad with sea grapes and ogo, limu and nori — three types of edible seaweed.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, 72-100 Kaupulehu Dr, Kailua-Kona, 808.325.8000

with fresh seafood nor its dedication to sourcing 75% of its ingredients locally. The sleek but low-key new decor keeps eyes on the dazzling ocean and sunset views when they’re not ogling showstoppers like tableside poke and ahi Wellington for two.

DON’T MISS:

The light yuzu butter-based sauces of misoyaki kanpachi, half Kona lobster and fresh catch enhance the flavor of the seafood without overwhelming it, and give you a plausible excuse to indulge in a decadent dessert like the smoked lilikoi chocolate fondant or caramel macnut bar.

MILL VALLEY PARADE TO BE LED BY RELIC OF THE RAILS

For 33 years it traveled the “Crookedest Railroad in the World.”

Historic Engine No. 9 will no doubt be the heaviest entry in Mill Valley’s Annual Memorial Day Parade. At 28 tons, the totally restored locomotive, which traversed the “Crookedest Railroad in the World” from downtown Mill Valley to the top of Mount Tam between 1895 and 1929, will be towed by truck and trailer with Mayor Stephen Burke in the engineer’s seat. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 26, from downtown’s Lytton Square.

HOME CHEF

Playa’s Ahi Tostada

The ultimate crowd pleaser and highly addictive!

At fan-favorite Playa in charming downtown Mill Valley, Chef Michael Siegel serves up outstanding contemporary and seasonal Mexican fare. His ahi tostadas are not only packed with big flavors and fresh ingredients, but they are also absolutely stunning. Make them as an appetizer or as a light lunch and prepare to be wowed. And, we highly recommend enjoying this with a salt-rimmed margarita in hand.

AHI TOSTADA

Yield: 12 mini or 4 large tostadas

Ahi Tostada:

Canola oil, for frying

14 2-inch (or 5 large) corn tortillas, one reserved for the salsa macha

12 ounces sushi-grade ahi tuna, small diced

2 red radishes, thinly sliced and julienned

1 Persian cucumber, finely diced

1 small shallot, thinly sliced and soaked in ice water

¼ cup ponzu (recipe below)

½ avocado, small diced

½ teaspoon salsa macha (recipe below)

2 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro

Warm 1 inch of canola oil in a large sauté pan on medium heat. Fry the tortillas until crispy, do not overcrowd the pan. Transfer to a paper towel to cool. In a mixing bowl, combine the ahi, radish, cucumber, shallot, avocado and ponzu. Mix lightly. Top the tortillas with the ahi tuna and garnish with the salsa macha and a sprinkle of cilantro. Serve immediately.

Salsa Macha

1 habanero pepper

3 chiles de arbol, seeds removed

1 ancho chile, seeds removed

1 ¼ cup canola oil

⅓ cup yellow onion, small diced

1 teaspoon garlic, minced

1 large (or 2 small) tostadas, broken into small pieces

2 tablespoons sesame seeds

½ teaspoon Kosher salt

In a 400°F oven, roast the habanero until fully black (burnt), about 25 minutes and toast the ancho and de arbol chiles for 7 minutes. Warm the oil in a small pot on medium heat and add the onions and garlic. Cook until lightly golden brown, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon. Add the ancho and de arbol chiles and lightly toast in the oil. Transfer the warm chile mixture and oil, salt, broken tostada and burnt habanero to a blender. Purée until smooth. Mix in the sesame seeds by hand. Cool before using.

Ponzu

¼ cup tamari

½ cup natural rice vinegar

2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

2-inch square kombu seaweed

Mix all ingredients and let stand for a minimum of 1 hour, preferably overnight.

MARIN HOME

Open House

A boxy, 1978-era ridgetop home in Kentfield gets a common space overhaul that frees up the floorplan — and the views.

The limestone-clad fireplace flanked by two floating benches is the focal point of the family room.

How do you modernize a 1970s-era, splitlevel home situated on a steep hillside with a chopped-up layout to capitalize on the views while maintaining warmth and intimacy? That was the challenge facing architect Keith Kirley and interior designer Heather Kendall Bernstein when they took on a renovation project in Kentfield for a couple with teenage children. While the clients had already renovated the private spaces of the 3,700-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom home, it took a number of years before they felt ready to tackle the main area. Located downstairs from the primary entrance, the living room, dining room and family room were all separate, and the kitchen was dated and buried into the center of the floor plan.

“The individual rooms really broke up the flow, so our work was focused on trying to open up the floor plan and bring light into the core of the home,” says Kirley, the managing and founding partner

at Larkspur-based Kirley Architects. “The home was also designed with a lot of cantilevers — it was unlike any other building we’ve worked on.”

On the design front, Bernstein was tasked with elevating the aesthetic, which she achieved with a monochromatic palette and many custom furnishings that are tailor-made for entertaining. “The clients are very hip and cool, so we wanted to lean in on a contemporary look,” says Bernstein, owner of Kentfield-based HKB Interior Design.

ARCHITECTURE

INTERIOR DESIGNER

HKB Interior Design

The team’s first task was to remove the dividing walls — a feat that required structural modifications due to the unique architecture. “Another challenge in designing this big, open floor plan was finding ways to create definition in each room,” Kirley says. “One way we did this was to

leave a cased opening to the living room so that it still feels like a different space to find a quiet moment.”

The team also reprogrammed the kitchen, including removing an awkward pass-through window, to better connect it to the other spaces on the main floor and reveal the views through the dining room’s newly enlarged floor-to-ceiling windows. A new island features a distinctive one-quarter waterfall design crafted with Calacatta marble, which is also used for the countertops and backsplash in the kitchen and adjacent bar, as well as for cladding the range hood. Clever storage solutions abound inside the new custom rift-sawn white oak cabinets built by Gary Arrigo of Design Line Cabinetry in San Rafael, including a push-latch niche next to the Wolf range; a large walk-in pantry;

and a dumbwaiter that descends to the garage on a lower level — one of the home’s original features that the owners wanted to preserve. Unassuming flush mount lighting above the island illuminates the workspace without detracting from the views. “The kitchen looks sleek, but it’s also very functional,” Bernstein says.

In the dining area, Bernstein complemented the clients’ existing table and sideboard with an Allied Maker chandelier and sconces, Design Within Reach chairs and a large-scale portrait made from scraps of recycled denim by Turkish artist Deniz Sagdic — all set against the backdrop of the stunning natural scenery.

The family room also received an upgrade. The focal point is now the fireplace, which was relocated from the far corner to the center of the room, wrapped in limestone and flanked by two floating benches — another structural feat — and large windows. Furnishings include custom sectionals with dual chaises that are designed to be visually appealing from all angles in the newly opened space and custom coffee tables.

The windows were also enlarged in the living room, where Bernstein softened the hard angles of the architecture and honed travertine-clad fireplace with rounded furnishings, including a curved custom sofa, bubbly Design Within Reach chairs, sinuous Souda fiberglass-reinforced concrete side table, custom cylindrical ebonized wood side table and recycled copper OHLA Studio floor lamp. One of the biggest challenges to renovating the space, however, arose when the team uncovered a giant boulder at the base of the stairwell buried beneath a stone planter added by a previous owner. Unable to remove the rock, which was part of the original architecture, they came up with a creative solution. “We essentially worked around it by creating a built-in reading nook over the rock and manipulating the stairs,” Kirley says. Now, the cozy, sunny skylit space is one of the owners’ favorite spots in the home.

Rounded, bubbly furnishings soften the hard angles of the architecture in the living room.
A cozy built-in reading nook cleverly conceals a large boulder — part of the home's original architecture that couldn't be removed.

“Stefan was a godsend for my brother and me when we had to sell our parents’ house. He saw us through a whole year of preparation, was always there when we needed him, and guided us through all the di cult decisions that must be made when parting with this huge part of our history and of our parents’ lives. Stefan is extremely hard working, thoughtful, and kind. He has a magnetic personality that buyers and sellers alike can trust. I will always be grateful to him for how much he helped us.

Thank you, Stefan!”

The Truth About Blackie

Blackie’s Pasture been a Marin attraction for 33 years. BY

et’s dispel the myth that Blackie, the horse that Tiburon’s Blackie’s Pasture memorializes, somehow swam across San Francisco Bay. Not true. Yes, there is an old black and white film showing a horse, pardon the pun, dog paddling in the bay. And yes, that horse might possibly have been named Blackie. But on close examination, the horse in that scratchy film emerges from water in San Francisco, not Tiburon, not anywhere in Marin. And yes, that horse was black, all black. Yet, if you give the above color photo, circa 1962, a good look you can see Tiburon’s Blackie had white markings above his hoofs (and you’ll see the wooden trestle in the background, famous

for carrying trains in and out of Tiburon from 1884 to 1967). So that’s the real Blackie and an open-water swimmer he was not. According to Tiburon historians Jennifer Hartung and David Gotz, Blackie was born in Kansas in 1926, came to California at first to be a rodeo cutting horse then was mustered into the U.S. Cavalry where reportedly he saw duty in Yosemite. Evidently, whatever Blackie did was tough on his back and in 1938 he was, literally, put out to pasture. His benefactor was Anthony Connell, a retired clam and fish seller who parked Blackie on a field off Tiburon Boulevard where he could endlessly watch trains and cars pass by. As the years — like the

cars and trains — passed by, children began feeding Blackie apples, carrots and sugar cubes until, on Feb. 27, 1966, at age 40, Blackie’s spirit went to horse heaven. And his body, with approval from Marin’s Health Department, was buried near where Blackie had stood, some say motionless, for nearly three decades. Today there’s an oak tree, garden and a white picket fence around Blackie’s grave; nearby is a life-size bronze statue of the heroic sway-back by sculptor Albert Guilbara that children play on; and the surrounding acreage is known as Blackie’s Pasture. It’s a popular weekend family destination — which is the ultimate truth about Blackie’s.

CHARLOTTE BERNSTRÖM

“My paintings are poetic explorations of the deep-rooted relationship we have with Nature. The work visually embodies the emotional realm and serves as a reminder of our inherent connection to Earth. Things we cannot necessarily see, but feel deeply within.”

“Observing Bernström’s new paintings we react with admiration to that which links us more closely to the natural world." Peter Selz, art historian & former chief curator of MOMA New York

Mentored by her grandfather, who in turn was taught by his father, Anshelm Schultzberg, a renown Swedish painter who worked and exhibited with the French Impressionists.

Rober t Green Fine Ar ts, established 1969, exhibits primarily painterly, abstract expressive work by painters that thoroughly take advantage of the sensually evocative nature of color and form.
