In the Know
Jose Lopez, chief concierge at The Palace hotel, shares his top winter picks in San Francisco.
Favorite winter activities in San Francisco?
The media is painting a bad light on San Francisco. Regardless, our city by the bay is alive and thriving. One of my favorite activities is Let’s Glow SF, which projects animated art across iconic buildings downtown. Another favorite is Illuminate SF, which covers epic outdoor spaces with site-specific artwork by well-known artists. Best of all, they are free to the public. My favorite one is “Entwined” at Golden Gate Park. Grace Cathedral’s Choir of Men and Boys has been entertaining us since 1947. They perform classic carols and beautiful masterpieces accompanied by a full orchestra and 7,466-pipe organ. The acoustics and space are magical. Palace Hotel will also be doing the famous annual Holiday Afternoon Tea, Santa Afternoon Tea where Santa makes a visit and our iconic Christmas Day Brunch Buffet with three seatings available.
Best family-friendly winter activities in the area?
I’d suggest that guests have breakfast in our beautiful Garden Court around our Christmas tree. After breakfast, walk over to Union Square to admire the large Christmas tree, then go to the Westin St. Francis to see their 12-foot Sugar Castle in the lobby. Stop at Gump’s, which is a local department store with an impressive collection of ornaments and gifts for everyone. If the kids still have any energy left, take them ice skating at Union Square’s rink surrounded by festive lights.
New or under-the-radar spots in the city that can’t be missed?
Not to be missed if traveling with teenagers who use Instagram, Umbrella Alley is a perfect photo opportunity located on Beach Street. I also like telling guests about Paxton Gate. It’s an only-in-San Francisco kind of store in Mission District specializing in fossils, taxidermy, framed insects and plants. This is a unique experience especially for guests traveling with children.
Suggestions for what to do when it’s cold out?
On a cold night I like having dinner at Tadich Grill. It’s one of the oldest seafood restaurants known for their cioppino
(a tomato-based seafood stew), that comes with delicious local sourdough bread. I love the restaurant because, just like The Palace, it has a sense of place. After dinner, I take one of our iconic cable cars up to Top of Mark at Mark Hopkins Hotel for a nightcap and view of San Francisco. Then, I take a self-driving Waymo to Golden Gate Park to admire the “Entwined” part of Illuminate SF.
Housed on Pier 45 at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf is Musée Mécanique. Both adults and children can experience a vast collection of over 300 original, playable coin-operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines, spanning from historic music boxes to contemporary video games. It’s a nostalgic journey through entertainment history, featuring iconic artifacts and memories from San Francisco’s past and beyond.
Best parks in San Francisco to spend an afternoon?
China Basin Park is one of the best newest parks in the city. Amazing views and has a great ambiance with the Giants ballpark as a backdrop along with the boats and the pelicans diving in for a catch! It also has a lovely beach area with sand and benches.
Presidio Tunnel Top is a unique playground with lots of different options. If you seek a well-conceived place that causes your kids to think and imagine as they play, this is it. It comes with a bonus in the form of great views of the city, the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the best new parks in the city.
Jose Lopez started at the Palace Hotel in 1991 as a front desk agent. His dedication and passion for guest services led him to join the Palace’s concierge team, later being promoted to chief concierge. A proud 15-year member of the prestigious Les Clefs d’Or Concierge organization, Lopez deeply appreciates the city’s rich history and iconic landmarks, from the world famous cable cars to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Spotlight
San Francisco Restaurant Openings
From pizza-by-the-slice to sit-down fine dining, San Francisco’s restaurant scene is always growing. Some household names continue to build their empire by introducing new locations, while others work to become household names themselves.
Located right outside of Golden Gate Park on Irving Street, Toast’N Egg has 10 different creative Korean egg sandwiches, from chicken curry to pork chop. Union Square’s new fine dining restaurant with ABSteak now serves Korean cuisine as well, but in an American steakhouse setting. For a flavor fusion on Gough Street, Xebec presents Mediterranean bites made with Japanese cuisine techniques.
The city also gets some South American flavors from Chef Carlos Altamirano’s modern Peruvian restaurant Altamirano in the Panhandle neighborhood. With multiple locations, the name Fiorella is a known one in San Francisco; now, a new location in Noe Valley is open, serving the same neighborhood Italian pastas, pizza and more that locals know and love. Che Fico has been an established restaurant for a while now too, and they’ve recently opened Che Fico
Pizzeria near the Chase Center in response to community adoration for their pizza. This new joint’s menu still also has their beloved salads and sandwiches, but the pies are certainly the star of this show. For more European eats, the Ocean Beach-adjacent location of new French bistro Galinette evokes a proper French atmosphere with authentically inspired meals, appetizers and desserts. Apna Chulha brings northern Indian cuisine with a modern, yet still homey, flourish to the Mission District, serving cultural staples with bases from chicken to seafood, and even vegetarian.
For those craving a good glass of wine but are looking to branch out from their go-to, the Embarcadero’s new wine bar Embarc Wines has over 80 wines to taste and learn about in a self-guided experience. Located in the Jay Hotel between the Financial District and the Embarcadero, Prelude takes inspiration from Southern cooking but uses modern ingredients and techniques, all with a cozy atmosphere influenced by the Presidio’s natural landscape.
