In the Know The InterContinental Mark Hopkins’ Chef Concierge Ric Lee Shares his Top Winter Picks in the City

Q: Favorite winter activities in San Francisco? A: I like dressing up and going out to holiday high tea at The Ritz-Carlton, Garden Court at The Palace or my own Top of The Mark at the Mark Hopkins, with a panoramic view of San Francisco. Visiting as many Christmas Tree lightings throughout the city — Union Square, Embarcadero Center, Presidio, Pier 39, Civic Center, Grace Cathedral and Huntington Park — is also always big on my list. Window shopping in favorite neighborhoods means going to shops on Union Street, Fillmore Street, Sacramento Street, and in Hayes Valley and Noe Valley because the local merchants define what San Francisco is really all about — they’re charming, passionate, heartwarming and informative. I love seeing boutiques, galleries, restaurants, bars and unique storefronts nestled in Victorian houses all decorated for the upcoming holidays. The upcoming annual event that I laugh at at this time is SantaCon, a zany, madcap one day event where people dress up as Santa Claus in all shapes and sizes and all walks of life. Q: Best family-friendly winter activities? A: In Golden Gate Park, the California Academy of Science offers an aquarium, planetarium and natural history museum. A true plethora of information and activities. In addition, also in this area is the de Young Museum for fine art in history, cultural and international acclaim, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Botanical Gardens and the Conservatory of Flowers. The San Francisco Zoo also isn’t far from here. The Exploratorium offers more than a hundred hands-on science projects and fun, educational objects for everyone to enjoy. Pier 39, with over a hundred unique shops and restaurants, free live

entertainment, a carousel, the Aquarium of the Bay and naturally the home of the sea lions. (Fog Harbor Restaurant has the best clam chowder in the sourdough bread bowl!). The Presidio offers a history of the military and a mix of the Walt Disney Family Museum, the George Lucas Digital Arts Center (there’s a statue of Yoda in the courtyard), restaurants like the Presidio Social Club and Tunnel Tops (best view of the Golden Gate Bridge). Outdoor ice-skating rinks at Union Square and the Embarcadero during the holidays. Q: Best places to get a seasonal or iconic drink? A: Bix Restaurant, order a Perfect Manhattan or a Modernism, listen to jazz and enjoy American fare in a 1920s stylish supper club atmosphere. Anytime of the day, the Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista near Ghirardelli Square. Zombie Village tiki bar (from the Bourbon and Branch team). Polynesian atmosphere and exotic concoctions. Lee began his career in 1969 at the Fairmont San Francisco working as a guest passenger elevator operator at the advice of his mother, a supervisor at the same hotel. By 1982 Lee was the hotel manager and Chef Concierge at the Fairmont, as well as his mother’s supervisor. He served as the President of the Northern California Concierge Association for three terms and was acknowledged by Where Magazine and industry colleagues with a Silver Plume Award for a lifetime achievement in hospitality. After a short-lived retirement he came to the InterContinental Mark Hopkins — the one Nob Hill hotel he hadn’t worked at — to serve as its Chef Concierge.

Spotlight John’s Grill: A San Francisco Culinary Institution Celebrates 115 Years

In the heart of downtown San Francisco stands a culinary institution that has become an integral part of the city’s history and culture — John’s Grill. As it marks an impressive 115th anniversary, this beloved restaurant continues to charm both locals and visitors alike with its outstanding food and rich history. John’s Grill opened its doors in 1908, making it one of the oldest restaurants in San Francisco. It is also the first restaurant to open in downtown San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. The restaurant has made an indelible mark on an array of customers since its inception, including famous writers such as Dashiell Hammett, who featured it in many of his detective novels. Naturally, Sam Spade’s character in The Maltese Falcon comes to mind when thinking of John’s Grill, but dozens of iconic Hollywood stars, sports figures, Presidents and other politicians have also cherished dining here throughout the years.

Walking into John’s Grill is like stepping back in time. The restaurant exudes an old fashioned charm, with dark wood paneling and vintage memorabilia adorning the walls. Of course, it is not just about nostalgia, it’s about the food. The menu features classic American dishes with a focus on steak and seafood. From the famous Sam Spade Lamb Chops to the bountiful Dungeness Crab Louie, each dish is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and tradition. Many have said that the best martini they have had has been at John’s Grill. Owner John Konstin Sr., also known for his generosity and philanthropy, is still a familiar presence at the restaurant. For their 115 year anniversary, John Jr. and John Sr. hosted an open house, inviting anyone and everyone to a free meal and wine to celebrate the occasion, and over 3,000 people were served.

In the Know Paul Guerrero, the Itinerary Designer for the Newest Napa Valley Auberge Resorts Collection, Stanly Ranch, Shares his Top Winter Wine Country Picks.

Q: Favorite seasonal activities in Wine Country? A: With the promise of mustard season at winter’s end, we take extra advantage of time as the days get shorter to enjoy the many joys the season brings. After your day of enjoying the valley, save some energy after dinner for an evening stroll in Napa’s brightly decorated downtown. From January 20 to February 18, the Lighted Art Festival adorns our streets with illuminated sculptures, 3D laser shows, projections and many creative ways to bring art to life with light as a medium. Best enjoyed after sunset! Q: Best family-friendly winter activities in the area? A: It would not be winter in the valley without a skating rink! Locals and visitors alike enjoy creating memories at this classic and fun holiday staple. Hosted at The Meritage Resort through January 7, come out with your significant other or the whole family. There’s an option to rent an igloo or firepit rink side, where you can enjoy s’mores or bubbles.

between visitors and the land. Another wonderful option is Scala Osteria. Owned by Giovanni Scala — proprietor of Bistro Don Giovanni — his wife Minta, partners Aaron and Rosa Diaz and close friends, Scala Osteria invites a whole new generation of loyal patrons. With a brighter and livelier atmosphere in the heart of downtown, the restaurant highlights the best of what we know and love from Bistro Don Giovanni while incorporating more Southern Italian seafood options. The bar is inviting, drinks are creative and it’s a great option for both lunch and dinner. Q: Best place to get seasonal or iconic drink?

Q: New or under-the-radar spots in Wine Country that can’t be missed

A: The late Michael Chiarello’s Italian roots and Yountville’s elevated dining continue to shine well together at Bottega. The After “Spa” Water is a fruity and floral elix of joy. Made with cucumber-infused Ketel One, botanicals, ube, Dimmi, pea flower, lemon air and elderflower tonic, it’s refreshing day or night, on its own or with a meal. It’s photogenic and begging for a post, but beware — you will be left yearning for more.

A: BEAR, here at Stanly Ranch, takes no shortcuts and makes no compromises on quality, just like The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil at our Rutherford sister property — which is the very first Michelinstarred restaurant in Napa Valley. With a menu inspired by the California grizzly bear’s omnivore diet, the seasonal offerings highlight the unique ability to source fresh ingredients from our working farm, The Grange. Farm director Nick Runkle hosts tours for our guests, strengthening the connection

Paul Guerrero, a Napa Valley native, has been guiding visitors for nine vintages. Growing up next door to vintners, Wine Country has always been a part of life. Concierge for Exclusive Napa Wine Tours and previously concierge at Carneros Resort, Paul is honored to be setting the concierge bar higher as an Itinerary Designer for the newest Napa Valley Auberge Resorts Collection, Stanly Ranch.
