Welcome to the Fall Issue of Local Getaways Express!
In addition to our numerous listings of places to go, things to do and places to eat, this season we invite you to immerse yourself in the dynamic nightlife of San Francisco and the luxurious allure of Wine Country spas.
San Francisco offers a wealth of activities that cater to every taste. As the sun sets, the city transforms into a playground of vibrant lights and endless entertainment.
A visit to the Exploratorium’s After Dark series offers a unique blend of science, art and human perception. These adults-only evenings feature interactive exhibits, live performances and craft cocktails, creating an unforgettable experience that stimulates both the mind and senses.
Asian Art Museum also offers a fun-filled, adultsonly Thursday night, as does California Academy of Sciences.
Culinary explorers can indulge in the flavors of San Francisco’s diverse neighborhoods during late-night dining experiences. Whether it’s the authentic dim sum in Chinatown or artisanal cocktails paired with gourmet bites in the Mission District, each outing promises a gastronomic adventure like no other.
Kids in tow? The Bay Area Discovery Museum is designed to expand the minds of little ones, but grown-ups love it too! Located at the base of the world famous Golden Gate Bridge, it’s an ideal place to get that bridge selfie or holiday card photo. Wanting to get a taste of the true Marin? Plan a walk through the tiny and funky town of Fairfax, followed by a picnic at The Marin Art & Garden Center, a hidden gem in the heart of
Published by 270 Media, LLC
Marin, offering acres of gardens and open space amidst the fall foliage.
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and venture into the serene landscapes of Wine Country, where the air is crisp and the vineyards offer a backdrop of unparalleled beauty. This fall, pamper yourself with the luxurious offerings of Wine Country spas, where relaxation and rejuvenation are the orders of the day. One of my day spa favorites is Blush Day Spa, where at a recent visit, before I experienced one of the most relaxing messages, I was treated to a glass of bubbly.
Fall is crush time in Wine Country, and the most vibrant time of year when vineyards come alive with the harvest. At Sterling Vineyards, ride the aerial tram to panoramic views and savor wines that reflect Napa Valley’s essence. Dive into the bold, artistic expressions of Orin Swift, where each bottle tells a story as rich as the wine inside. Visit J Winery in Sonoma for an exquisite sparkling wine experience in the Bubble Room.
We hope this issue of Local Getaways Express inspires you to embark on your own fall adventure, discovering the hidden gems and timeless traditions that make this region a destination like no other. If in doubt, ask one of our hotel concierges to help direct you to an experience that you can only find in the Bay Area!

Geoffrey S. Faller: Concierge at 1 Hotel in San Francisco Shares His Top Fall Picks in the City
What’s special about fall in San Francisco?
Autumn in San Francisco is delightful! As the summer crowds dissipate, much like the August fog, sunny days outnumber the cloudy ones. Locals relish in what they call their “second summer,” taking full advantage of the pleasant weather outdoors.
Under-the-radar spots that can’t be missed?
Andy Goldsworthy’s Wood Line is a snaking sculptural installation of eucalyptus trunks and branches following Lover’s Lane, the oldest footpath in the Presidio. This eucalyptus grove planted decades ago was once infiltrated by Monterey cypress trees, which later died out leaving a void in the woods.
Located on a jetty in the San Francisco Bay, the Wave Organ is an acoustic sculpture built in 1986. When the waves roll in, the sculpture’s pipes resound with liquid music.
The 16th Avenue Steps consist of 163 mosaic-tiled steps, a vibrant staircase tucked away in San Francisco’s serene Sunset district. Although the neighborhood lacks other tourist attractions, visitors to the staircase are treated to panoramic city views and a stunning garden featuring succulents and native plants for the Green Hairstreak butterfly.
Favorite free activities to do in the fall?
On the very first weekend of fall, head to San Francisco’s famous Chinatown neighborhood for the annual Autumn Moon Festival. The weekend celebration includes, in the festival association’s words, “nonstop entertainment, food vendors, mooncakes, kids’ activities, lion dancing and much more!”
One of the most anticipated Fall events in San Francisco is Fleet Week. Every October, military ships parade under the Golden Gate Bridge to dock along the Embarcadero, and the most talented pilots from the Navy prepare to amaze the crowds below with their daring air choreography.
Recommended excursion for travelers without cars?
Just a 35-minute ferry ride from San Francisco Ferry Terminal, Angel Island State Park is a unique getaway
for hiking, biking and camping. Being the largest island in the San Francisco Bay Area and with 13 miles of trails, Angel Island State Park is a fun place to explore and get close to nature while near the big city.
Best activities for families with children?
The Children’s Creativity Museum offers a vibrant experience for children aged 2–12, featuring two floors of interactive exhibits and activities. It’s designed to foster self-discovery and enhance creative confidence in young visitors.
Housed on Pier 45 at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf is Musée Mécanique. Both adults and children can experience a vast collection of over 300 original, playable coin-operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines, spanning from historic music boxes to contemporary video games. It’s a nostalgic journey through entertainment history, featuring iconic artifacts and memories from San Francisco’s past and beyond.
Best parks in San Francisco to spend an afternoon?
China Basin Park is one of the best newest parks in the city. Amazing views and has a great ambiance with the Giants ballpark as a backdrop along with the boats and the pelicans diving in for a catch! It also has a lovely beach area with sand and benches.
Presidio Tunnel Tops is a unique playground with lots of different options. If you seek a well-conceived place that causes your kids to think and imagine as they play, this is it. It comes with a bonus in the form of great views of the city, the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the best new parks in the city.
Geoffrey S. Faller, Concierge at 1 Hotel San Francisco, has been in the hospitality industry for most of his life. Spotlight Bay Area Museums After Dark
Nightlife and museums don’t normally get mentioned in the same sentence. In the Bay Area, that is not the case, as many of the area’s museums and galleries offer exciting after-dark opportunities for patrons and visitors.
The California Academy of Sciences hosts a popular 21+ Thursday night affair called NightLife. Visitors spend their evening with over 60,000 live animals, music and drinks at one of the world’s largest natural history museums. Explore the incredible Steinhart Aquarium or step into the simulated jungle of the Osher Rainforest.
For even more fun science activities, plus experiments that will make you feel like a kid again, the Exploratorium presents After Dark Thursday Nights. Guests must be 18 or older to enter After Dark Thursdays and are treated to the full Exploratorium experience without that guilty feeling of stepping in front of a child to take a turn on their favorite gizmo.
SFMOMA is another Thursday night option, as the galleries remain open until 8 p.m. The first Thursday of every month is free to all visitors as well. Guests can
finish their visit with drinks at the museum’s cafeturned-bar after they’ve seen all the art they desire.
Even more late-night art is waiting at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum, which boasts over 18,000 works from all over the Asian continent. On Thursdays, the museum stays open until 8 p.m. and often holds special events in the evening for those looking for new experiences.
Over in the East Bay, the Oakland Museum of California hosts Friday Nights Off the Grid every week through October. These events start at 5 p.m. for ticketed guests and include local food trucks outside the museum, live music and full evening access to the museum’s galleries.
If you’re a proactive planner, try the Alcatraz Night Tour
A rotating cast of experts will explain everything to know about “the Rock” in the spooky twilight of the Bay. Only a few hundred visitors are allowed at the famous island prison in the evening, and the limited slots can fill up well in advance.

Archer Hotel’s Concierge Lisa Ross on How to Visit Wine Country in the Fall
Favorite fall activities in Wine Country?
Fall is “crush” season, when you can watch grapes being picked, crushed and readied for fermentation, barrel aging and, in turn, becoming delicious wine. The scent of grapes in the valley is amazing, and many wineries have parties to celebrate a successful fall harvest. Depending on the variety, apples are available from late July through early November. And, October through November is usually the best time to see fall colors in the valley, with trees showing beautiful fall foliage in October and vineyards taking on golden and red colors in November.
Best things to do with a family?
There are several wineries that are open to future winemakers and encourage visitors of all ages. Hiking and biking are also very popular in the Valley. For activities in and around Napa, there’s the Rockzilla climbing facility, Grape Escape escape room, Playground Fantastico, Napa Toy Museum and Train Town. Calistoga’s Old Faithful Geyser is not quite as impressive as Yellowstone’s, but it’s one of a very few in the country. Also nearby are Safari West’s safari tours, the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom animal theme park, Scandia Family Center for mini-golf and arcade games and the Jelly Belly Factory.
Best example of authentic Wine Country hospitality?
Although Napa boasts many wonderful, large commercial wineries, there are still many wineries that invite you to sit with the winemakers or owners and taste some rare wines. Discover the roots of the valley while learning from the
Best towns to walk through?
Each of the towns going up the valley are unique. Napa has really come into its own in the last few years, with satellite tasting rooms, world-class restaurants and live music. Yountville almost has more restaurants than citizens. St. Helena hosts upscale boutiques and galleries. Calistoga is homey and a bit funky — good funky! It’s fun and very casual.
Best hikes?
Westwood Hills is a personal favorite. It’s steep but not too long, and it has great views. In Skyline Wilderness Park, you can hike up to Lake Marie for the view. Robert Louis Stevenson State Park is 5,272 acres and contains stunning views of Napa, Sonoma and Lake Counties from the summit of Wine Country’s highest peak, Mount St. Helena. On clear days, the Pacific Ocean, Sierra Nevadas, Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen are also visible, and in wintertime the hikes may even feature snow.
Lisa Ross landed in California as a teenager on a crosscountry camping trip. Out of money but lucky to get a job in a local restaurant, she was soon after lured into the wine industry, representing several well-known Napa wineries. For the last 15 years, Lisa has been a concierge in Napa, spending the last six years at Archer Hotel, showing visitors what she loves about the Valley. Lisa and her husband, Douglas, are avid gardeners and wine collectors at their Napa home.
