The "Fantastical Feast" team.

We Ate Cake!

As we roll into the holiday season, our team here at 270 Media is grateful for the opportunity to serve the Marin community with our cornucopia of products. Marin Magazine is coming up on its twentieth anniversary with much of the original team in place, Local Getaways is gaining traction with Nikki C. at the helm, we’ve just launched a new app (available in the App Store on your phone) and SPACES is finding its groove as a bi-weekly newsletter and quarterly department within Marin Magazine. In step with shining the light on what makes our community unique, we dreamed up our feature story months ago while discussing our uber-talented friend Michelle Heston, who has been the executive regional director of public relations for the Fairmont Hotels COOLEST THING for California, Hawaii and Arizona I LEARNED THIS MONTH for almost 20 years. Once she and “I was fascinated to learn that her husband, Dave, became empty modern wheat has six sets of nesters, she started baking cakes for chromosomes, and Hourani, fun. She creates those “is that cake?” (a form of durum wheat), has type of cakes, and now has a side gig, three sets.” Heston Cakes. Michelle has won Best — LISA HILGERS, ART DIRECTOR of Show at the Marin County Fair and has earned national recognition with Good Day Sacramento, Dallas Morning News, Chicago Tribune and Women’s Day appearances, to name a few accolades. During an editorial meeting as we were scrolling through her @hestoncakes Instagram account and we thought, let’s make a turkey that’s a cake … and how about a pumpkin pie — that is actually, a cake! While she could have done the whole meal as a cake, we brought in Lynda Balslev — chef, stylist and food writer, extraordinaire — to continue with the Trompe-l'oeil-Thanksgivingthemed feature, and I suggested mashed potatoes out of

cauliflower — apparently this idea was too pedestrian, so she created a wreath out of veggies, still cool. Cameron Cressman came onboard to take the photos, the project was moved to her parents’ gorgeous Mill Valley home and the list of contributors grew to represent a true coming together of Marin culinary talent. Realizing there were lots of cooks in the photoshoot kitchen, I popped in for a couple minutes and was able to get a quick “usie” of everyone involved, except Michelle, the original inspiration. For the full menu of Trompe l'oeil Thanksgiving, the working title was changed to Fantastical Feast (check it out page 38.) I also hope you have time to read about Dave Wilson’s best Thanksgiving ever, back in 1951, when he was able to exchange his entire savings account, $79, for a used, but cared for ’27 Chevy. His commitment to caring for this one car, through the past 60 or so years, is an inspiration in our ‘throw-away’ world of consumption. We hope these features inspire you to have some fun this holiday, and remind you to not let the "turkeys" get you down (eat cake instead). We’d love to see how you celebrate the season, from traditional meals to Friendsgiving potlucks. If you are on your own, don’t forget there are plenty of groups who are looking for volunteers, including Glide Memorial, SF–Marin Food Bank and Project Open Hand.

Dear Ms. Weigert, Thank you for the great article on the old homes of Marin that you wrote for the September 2023 issue of Marin Magazine. The home at 333 G Street was so enticing that I sought it out in San Rafael and was fortunate enough that day to find Mr. Lawrence Loder sitting and relaxing on the porch of his “wonderment.” He was very courteous and offered to give me a full tour of the entire house and garden. I am grateful to you for having done such wonderful research and photography of Mr. Loder’s house and home. — Peter Irlenborn, Novato

Author Talk

BY E L A I N E P E T R O C E L L I

Ritu Mukerji was born in Kolkata, India, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. From a young age, she has been an avid reader of mysteries, from Golden Age crime fiction to police procedurals. She received a BA in history from Columbia University and a medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. She completed residency training at the University of California, Davis and has been a practicing internist for fifteen years. Mukerji lives in Marin County, California, with her husband and children.

was inspired by my days in Philadelphia as a medical student. I discovered places like the Mutter Museum, the historic medical library at the College of Physicians and the old surgical amphitheater at Pennsylvania Hospital, where surgeons had to operate between the hours of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to capture the best natural light to work by. It was only years later that I learned of Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, and the trailblazing “lady doctors” who studied medicine more than 150 years ago. I knew then that I had the perfect setting for the novel and a distinctive heroine that readers would be drawn to.

Several rave reviews of your book point out that it is “character driven.” Did you know where the story would be going from the beginning? I really didn’t know

where the story was going for a while! I envisioned the main character of Dr. Lydia

Weston first. She is so central to the plot, our guide and interpreter to all that happens. I thought a lot about what had led her to study medicine and how would she take care of her patients — this is where I drew on my own experiences as a doctor. I felt I truly had to understand her before I could start to write. As a practicing physician with a family, how did you find time to write this complex, yet fast moving, novel? Because of the

busyness of my life, my writing routine was quite simple. I would sit at the kitchen table, always with a cup of tea. I wrote early in the morning before going to work as a doctor, or late at night after my three kids were asleep. It was a time when the house was quiet and I could think clearly. Doing the research was a natural extension of what I loved: immersing myself in a subject and reading for long hours. It felt very familiar, from many years of medical training.

Five Days in November: In Commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of JFK’s Assassination

On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and the world stopped for four days. A photo ran on the front pages across the world, showing a Secret Service agent desperately attempting to protect the President and Mrs. Kennedy. That agent was Clint Hill. Clint Hill and Lisa Hill will speak at Book Passage Corte Madera on November 18 at 4 p.m.

Murder by Degrees This historical

mystery set in 19th century Philadelphia follows a pioneering woman doctor as she investigates the disappearance of a young patient who is presumed dead. It is 1875 and the start of term at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lydia Weston, professor, and anatomist, is immersed in teaching her students in the lecture hall and hospital. When the body of a patient, Anna Ward, is dredged out of the Schuylkill River, the young chambermaid’s death is deemed a suicide. But Lydia is suspicious and brought into the police investigation. Mukerji will speak at Book Passage Corte Madera on November 5 at 4 p.m.

Look at Me: Who Do You See? Everybody thinks Unice

is a rhino. What if I tell you she’s actually a unicorn? I bet you’ll say, “She looks like a rhino. She is a rhino.” But Unice doesn’t feel like a rhino, and her insides are all mixed-up. She feels trapped ... until she meets a tiger with glitzy rainbow stripes. Britta Stromeyer will read to families at Book Passage Corte Madera on November 12 at noon.

Hospital Mask Mandate BY K A S I A PAW LO W S K A

Beginning on November 1 — through March 31, 2024 — Marin County Public Health will require masking in hospitals and nursing facilities to limit the spread of seasonal respiratory viruses and Covid-19. Masks will be recommended, but not required in medical clinics and other outpatient healthcare settings. Historical rates and virus levels in county wastewater show a clear spike in RSV and influenza, rising in November or December, which contributes to a rise in sick days from work and school, and increased hospitalizations and deaths. In Marin, 90 percent of hospitalizations in 2023 occurred among residents age 60 or older. Health Departments across the Bay Area are issuing similar mask requirements for certain healthcare settings during the same time period. marincounty.org

Janelle Kellman

The former mayor of Sausalito and environmental nonprofit founder has focused her career on addressing climate change, and she’s not done yet. BY G R AC E TO W L E

Passionate about driving change, Janelle Kellman has spent her life addressing critical issues associated with climate change. After receiving an undergraduate degree in history from Yale, a master’s in environmental management from Oxford and a law degree from Stanford (all while playing Division I sports), Kellman began her career as an environmental attorney working across public and private practices. In addition to her accomplishments in the legal profession, Kellman launched a technology startup and now runs a global nonprofit focused on coastal resilience and ocean health and advises early-stage clean companies on electrification, decarbonization and ocean health. In 2022, she served as mayor of Sausalito and currently has her sights set on lieutenant governor of California in 2026. Globally recognized for her expertise and leadership, she applies her unique experience to finding solutions to complex problems. Here, Kellman shares what inspired her to pursue a career devoted to tackling climate change, her proudest accomplishments so far and her plans for the future.

C U R R E N T S C O N V E R S AT I O N

When did you find a passion for the environment? I often explain my career

path simply by telling people I’m a lifelong athlete. As a lifelong athlete, I grew up playing outdoors. I played four different sports in high school, and from a young age, I had a deep connection to nature and being outside. As anyone who has spent hours practicing some type of sport outside, you start to notice changes in temperature, rainfall and ecosystem health. You feel connected to what’s happening around you. I think being a lifelong team sport athlete has truly shaped every significant career moment and decision for me. What’s the most exciting thing you’re working on right now? Two things: First

is my climate resilience work with the Center for Sea Rise Solutions focused on coastal adaptations and ocean health, and second is my decision to run for statewide office and enter the race in California for lieutenant governor. Obviously, the two are intertwined. My entire life, I have been working on environmental solutions. I’ve enjoyed a great career across law, business and innovation, so I’ve been able to appreciate different perspectives. When I was elected as mayor, I immediately started working on several climate resilience projects. Here in Marin, we have more storms than we used to have, and those storms are more intense. We have high tides, and these high tides, coupled with subsidence and storm frequency and intensity, are causing massive flooding. An example everyone sees each year is the bike path (that runs from Sausalito through Mill Valley). I began to understand that we need long-term planning around the flooding we’re experiencing, and we need to better understand how this impacts our basic infrastructure.

What are ways we can take action together? If you focus on hope and opportunity because there are things we can do, the oceans are our biggest ally.

As mayor, what action did you take to address the coastal resiliency issues we see in Sausalito? I assembled a

talented group of Sausalito volunteers, created a sea-level rise task force, and developed a set of recommendations for the city council to consider to take action; however, we needed funding. I’m very action-oriented, and this inspired me to roll up my sleeves and get to work tapping into the expertise of my task force. I had two wonderful mentors at OneShoreline in San Mateo who work on sea-level rise. I made a request to the State for funding, and my request was granted. We received $1 million from the state of California to take action on sealevel rise. Sausalito had never received this type of funding from the state for climate work. We had never asked, but I saw an opportunity and went for it. Now we’re developing a vulnerability assessment, and we hired a sustainability and resilience manager. We’re well-positioned to start planning long-term around both sustainability and resilience. I thought

32 N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 3

031-033 Currents_Convo.1123_v5.indd 32

|

about how these issues didn’t just stop here with me in Marin, surely other people have these concerns, so I launched an NGO called the Center for Sea Rise Solutions. Basically, I travel across the country and to key parts of Europe to work with local decision-makers to share these opportunities for coastal communities to take action and become more resilient in the face of flooding and other impacts of sea-level rise. Naturally, this was extended internationally, and I have worked closely with elected leaders in France, Portugal and Italy to share learnings, findings, and ways to educate and empower our communities. What is the most important message you want to share about addressing climate change? Part of it is focused

on opportunity and hope. People aren’t inspired by doom and gloom and anxiety, so what are ways that we can take action? What are ways we can take action together? If you focus on hope and opportunity because there are things we can do, the oceans are our biggest ally. If we could double down on cleaning the oceans and consider them a friend in our efforts to sequester carbon, then we can start to see opportunities to make significant changes in our lifetimes.

How can we help accelerate climate action here in Marin? Get involved. Not

only educate yourself and learn as much as you can, but also volunteer for a task force or a community group. It’s a movement, and you have to gain momentum and inspire each other. Don’t be afraid to be the person who gets inspired, as you may inspire somebody else. Do something, because together we can do incredible things. Get yourself into a community that’s supportive, and contribute whatever you can, even if it’s

MARIN

10/12/23 12:47 PM

just your energy. Even if you don’t have a particular skill set, contribute passion and purpose. Start to do something, and you’ll find other like-minded people will start to do something, too. What led you to become interested in local government? My dad was big into

philanthropic work, which showed me how to make an impact for a cause I care about. I wanted to use my background in environmental management and law to help the community tackle issues that I saw not only locally, but also across California. I had the opportunity to run for the Sausalito city council and got elected in 2020. I’ve worked on local issues with statewide impacts like affordable housing, homelessness, climate resilience and more. When I was elected mayor, I was able to further utilize my perspectives and experiences to exercise pragmatic solutions by helping lead the drafting of Sausalito’s new housing policy, which was the first to be approved in Marin County by the state, and by negotiating complex funding and policy solitons for a homeless encampment in Sausalito. Working on these solutions at the local level gave me insight into the broader impact our work and decisions can make statewide. What’s your favorite part of Marin? I

love the open spaces in Marin. Here in my backyard, I’ve got miles of trails in the Marin Headlands. We’re fortunate to have access — free access — to the beaches, mountains, paths, Muir Woods and more. It makes me happy that visitors from all over the world come to see the beautiful parts of Marin.

Amber waves BY C H R I S TI N A M U E LLE R Walking through a field of Hourani, an heirloom wheat farmed at Tara Firma Farm in Petaluma, felt almost religious, a rite of passage for this American, raised as I was singing “America the Beautiful,” the national anthem of these United States. Marin, land of lettuces and beets, yes, but amber waves of grain? This field held something special, an heirloom crop without a Marin heritage of dairying, wine, or produceto support it. Elizabeth DeRuff of Honoré Farm and Mill wants to change that perception. An Agricultural Chaplain, businesswoman and farmer, DeRuff set out in the early 2010s to propagate drought-tolerant wheat in support of the non-profit educational work at the heart of Honoré’s mission. Naming the 501(c)3 non-profit in honor of Honoratus of Amiens, a.k.a. Saint Honoré, the patron saint of bread bakers, flour merchants and pastry chefs, and a 7th century French bishop, was a first step. Finding the right type of wheat for Northern California’s unique climate and

DeRuff ’s project involved a web of seed savers and bread bakers — and Washington State University’s Breadlab in Burlington, Washington.

One small box for the future

In 2019, DeRuff received a small box from the Breadlab. Inside were 300 grams (about 10.5 ounces, or a large handful) of Hourani, an ancient grain originally farmed across the Fertile Crescent, from Palestine to Afghanistan. Re-discovered in Judea during a 1960s excavation at the Masada Fortress (built by Herod the Great in 30 B.C.E.), Hourani and another variety, Jaljuli, were selected from the Breadlab’s vast seed collection as ideal candidates for DeRuff ’s Northern California project. “The Breadlab sent those to me with intention,” DeRuff says. “The idea was to further not only the food itself but the spirituality of food,” DeRuff was running a program with the students from Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy in Marin City. Called Wheat Wednesdays, the program encourages learning everything about wheat — from how it is grown, to threshing and winnowing, to preparing an actual loaf. Her young crew planted modern-day seeds, valued by an ancient king for their high yield and delicious flavor, in 2020. The yield? 150 pounds of saleable Hourani. It was an auspicious start.

What is hourani?

Hourani is a wheat landrace, a traditional crop developed over the millennia humans have farmed wheat, adapted to local conditions. It is not genetically edited to promote attributes favored by industrial agriculture. And it seems to like Marin’s (historically) cold, wet winters and hot, dry summers. When I visited that Petaluma field in June, the Hourani glistened, its pale green heads and strawcolored stalks whispering of their nutritive goodness. Wading into the eighth of an acre plot at Tara Firma — a plot size ideal for hand planting and harvesting with volunteers and program participants — DeRuff showed me the size of the Hourani’s nearly ripe heads. Massive compared to White Sonoran, another landrace wheat DeRuff is growing under the same Marin-Sonoma conditions, its heads are nearly twice as wide and a third longer than the Sonoran. It easily spanned the length of my hand. With this simple ‘show of hands,’ Hourani’s viability as an important source of the ancient world’s calories was immediately apparent. “Wheat currently accounts for 20% of the world’s calories,” says DeRuff, a reminder of

wheat’s global importance. Her Northern California Hourani could be something, its remarkable heft a promise of high future yields. DeGruff’s Hourani is regeneratively farmed, one player in a crop rotation system that sequesters carbon and interrupts disease cycles. Hourani flour requires 95% less water than conventional flour. Unlike conventional flour, Hourani’s nutrients are not stripped out before it is turned into bread. And it is planted and harvested by the local community and returned to the community: in addition to selling to local bakers like Craig Ponsford and sales at the Saturday Farmers’ Market in Larkspur (the proceeds of which support the non-profit’s educational efforts), DeRuff works to supply three Marin school districts and one private school with grain and flour for their educational programs.

The human health benefit

Hourani’s chromosomal structure and non-manipulated gluten structures are also beneficial to human health. Where modern wheat has six sets of chromosomes, Hourani, a form of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. Durum), has three sets. (Einkorn has two sets.) No foreign genomes have been added to Hourani, nor has its protein structure — the glutenin and gliadin that are present in all wheats — been manipulated. “It has not been hybridized,” DeRuff says. “It is still in its original genetic form.” Like emmer, einkorn, farro and other so-called ancient grains, Hourani’s decidedly unmodernized protein and starch content are more in synch with human digestion. Bran and natural oils remain after milling, further boosting the nutritional content and prebiotic fiber. “It’s simpler in Hourani,” says DeRuff. “When eaten whole, it is easier to digest.” Designed for educational use and as a test plot to propagate other varieties, DeRuff’s eighth of an acre at Tara Firma is a small part of the 14 acres currently under cultivation at Sebastopol’s Green Valley Farm, at Full Belly Farm in Guinda, and other farms willing to provide acreage to Honoré. Partners such as Good Earth Natural Foods, Patagonia, Clif Family Foundation and others fund Honoré’s farming work via the Crop Adopt program and its educational programs. While DeRuff works to secure funds for a mobile stone mill to process the grains on each farm where Hourani is grown, a miller in Eureka crushes the grains into a coarse flour. Marin’s Rustic Bakery turns it into shortbread. Now five years into the Hourani project, DeRuff, like countless growers before her, is growing in leaps and bounds. Twenty twenty one’s harvest of 3,200 pounds yielded 10,500 pounds on six and a half acres in 2022. Her take this year? More than 25,000 pounds. Amber waves, indeed.

ALAN LIU / ISTOCK (BACKGROUND)

On Thanksgiving Day 1951, I fell in love at first sight. I was sixteen years old, and my family and I were visiting my father’s Aunt Della in Los Angeles. There was wood paneling all over the walls of her little bungalow, and the smell of slowroasting turkey filled the air. Before we all sat down for dinner, Della took me aside and said she had something special to show me. She led me outside, across the giant front porch, and around back to an old wooden garage. She removed the padlock and chain, lifted the door…and that’s when I saw it. The immaculate black paint. The convertible top. The leather bench seat. The amazing wood spoke wheels. I had no idea what model of car I was looking at, but in all honesty, I didn’t care. Again — it was love at first sight. Aunt Della informed me that I was feasting my eyes on a 1927 Chevrolet Roadster Series AA Capitol. She had bought it brand new from a Chevrolet dealership in Orange County the year it was manufactured, so by this point it was already an older car. But in my eyes, the fact that it had spent 24 good years on the road only added to my excitement. Later that night, as we were enjoying Aunt Della’s delicious Thanksgiving turkey (still the best I’ve ever had), she asked me how much money I had. I told her a $79 check from my job as a soda jerk at the Palos Verdes drug store was all the money I had. I made 50 cents an hour at the time, so that check represented a lot of hard work! She gave me a warm smile, leaned in, and said ever so sweetly, “That’ll do.” And just like that, the car of my dreams was mine. Aunt Della was thrilled to hand over the keys, and I was thankful to call her family. That evening, I drove the car 35 miles back to our home in Redondo Beach. It was dark and damp, and my mother was riding shotgun with a blanket over her lap to keep her warm. I had gotten my driver’s license just two months prior, so the drive was an adventure to say the least. Whenever I’d hit the brakes too hard, the car would hop forward like a rabbit, which really put the fear of God in me! Back in those days, it was rare for a kid my age to own a car. Actually, it was so rare that my high school didn’t even have a parking lot for students. And as I delved into the history of my ’27 Chevy Roadster, I learned that it was a special car indeed, manufactured at the Oakland Chevrolet factory during a breakthrough year for the company. They had begun selling a wide variety of models in an array of colors, which was revolutionary for the time as, prior to this, cars didn’t come with many cosmetic options at all. By contrast, Ford, Chevrolet’s main competitor in the international market, only offered one model in one color: black. Chevrolet’s customization options helped them overtake Ford as the leading car manufacturer in the world. Chevrolet sold over one million Series AA cars in 1927. But sadly, that number started to dwindle in subsequent years. Dealerships were only interested in selling new vehicles, so to discourage the used car market, they would offer sellers $50 for their old cars and scrap them. Even more old cars were lost during World War II. All of our nation’s resources

Left to right: Taken the day the car was bought in 1927 at Aunt Della’s house, near Old Towne in the City of Orange. Dave in red sweater, circa 1984; Chevrolet ad, 1927; Dave and Carol, 2023, in Mill Valley — married 65 years so far.

had gone into fighting the war, which meant only 197 cars (to be sold to the general population) were manufactured in the United States over about a three-year period. And on top of that, many cars were scrapped, their steel repurposed to manufacture more tanks, ships and ammunition. In the 50s, in the wake of the war, it became popular to convert older cars into hot rods. The cars would be “chopped up,” and as a result of the process would no longer resemble their original form. As a result, there are very few ’27 Chevys left on the road today, with only a handful registered in the state of California. But my Chevy Roadster is a true survivor! All of her body parts are original, from the 4-cylinder

engine, to the three-speed transmission, to the wood spoke wheels I love so much. Back when Aunt Della bought the car, the model’s standard wheels were made of steel discs. But being the woman of taste that she was, she opted for the elegant wood spokes. As it turns out, that was the last year that Chevy offered wood spoke wheels on their cars. I have a lot of fond memories growing up with my car. Back when I was working at the drug store, actor Charles Laughton and his wife Elsa Lanchester would sometimes come in for ice cream sundaes. They were a genuinely nice couple, and they would often step outside after dessert to admire my old roadster with their famous friends. In high school I would drive my friends to the beach on weekends to surf and have fun. One time we were able to squeeze ten people into my little two-seater! There were friends hanging on either side of the car with their feet on the running boards, some crammed in the trunk, and some on the bench seat with me. It was quite the sight. So much so, in fact, that we caught the attention of an on-duty police officer who pulled us over immediately. The cop spoke to me as my friends piled out of the car at his behest. “I hope I never see this again!” he said. I smiled and replied, “No, sir. You won’t!” By the end of it, he was laughing along with me and my friends and decided not to give me a ticket. I miss how lighthearted things were back in those days. A lot of my favorite moments with my Chevy revolved around keeping her in decent running condition over the years. It’s not easy keeping a car on the road

for so long, and I’ve had to fix her up with my own two hands many times over. I’ll never forget the time I tried to “compression start” the engine by starting the ignition while rolling the car backwards downhill in reverse, which snapped the driveshaft in two! I went down to the junkyard, bought a replacement driveshaft, and installed it myself. I’ve become something of a self-taught mechanic over the years, which I’m very proud of. But that’s not to say I kept the car in great shape all by myself. I’ve met some wonderful, incredibly talented people over the years who helped keep my Chevy purring and looking pristine. In 1977, I took the car to a guy in Oakland named Eugene who re-wired the entire car and overhauled the engine. It was the very last re-wire job he did, and he retired shortly after the project was done. In 2018, my good friend Tony Santos gave my vintage Chevy a complete paint redo. He is of some renown in the hot rod world and wins prizes at car shows with his creations. For my car, he matched the original blue and black colors beautifully with four coats of lacquer paint. Specialists like Eugene and Tony are a dying breed, and boy do I feel lucky to have found them. My Chevy is 96 years old now, and she remains a source of pride and joy in my family. My wife Carol and I like to drive her around Mill Valley and Southern Marin, though we try to avoid the 101 as the car’s top speed is only about 50 MPH. The convertible top down allows us to chat with admirers at stoplights and take in the views as we cruise down the canyons of Mill Valley. Some of our favorites are West Blithedale, Cascade, Warner, Homestead and Tam Valley. On

some weekends we drive down to the Presidio Yacht Club in Sausalito under the Golden Gate Bridge to watch our son Chris practice paddling with the world-renowned Tamalpais Outrigger Canoe Club. I am amazed at how far my ’27 Chevy Roadster has come since I first laid eyes on her in Aunt Della’s garage. This car has put smiles on so many faces. Carol and I love chatting with curious passersby, and sometimes we’ll even open up the engine cover so that kids can peek inside. I’ve passed ownership of the car down to my daughter Jody now, and I know she will take great care of her long after I’m gone. The thing that makes me happiest is knowing that the car will stay in the family for generations to come. From Aunt Della, to me, to my daughter and beyond.

TRAVEL Maui Wants You Now is the time to make your travel plans to the Valley Isle.

PATRICK KELLY

BY JEANNE COOPER

As Lahaina residents and business owners have begun the slow and careful process of reentering designated parts of the historical town destroyed by the wildfire last August, the area understandably remains off-limits to outsiders. However, other parts of West Maui began to reopen to visitors in phases October 8. Hotels and hospitality providers around the Valley Isle are both anxious for their return — and their good behavior. “We want to encourage visitors when they come here to travel mindfully, to be responsible and show respect and compassion, and just don’t go to Lahaina,” said Sherry Duong, executive director of the Maui Visitors & Convention Bureau. Where to Stay

Visitors who frequent properties such as Napili Kai Beach Resort Montage Kapalua Bay or the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua — all in the first phase of reopening — should still call ahead to make sure all amenities they expect are still available. In Kapalua, all activities — ATVs, horseback riding, ziplining, kayaking and the Jean-Michel Cousteau Ambassadors of the Environment — were set to resume by October 8, according to Rebecca Pang, director of public relations for the Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. Restaurants and activity providers elsewhere also need visitors’ help, noted Kathleen Costello, director of marketing/communications for the Wailea Resort Association, 45 minutes south of Lahaina. “Come and dine out to help out — everything keeps a person’s job going,” Costello said. “Buy a salad, keep a farmer

growing its crops. Having a cocktail and dinner at Pita Paradise helps keep five people working.” Ultimately, Costell said, Maui “needs visitors to help us heal.” Lodging Options

Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea has created a special Maui Strong rate, which includes a donation of $125 or $200 a night to the Maui Strong Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, depending on the room category, through December 15. Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is collecting donations of personal and feminine hygiene products, baby products, pet supplies and nonperishable food and recommends guests donate to the Maui relief efforts of World Central Kitchen, American Red Cross, and the Maui Strong Fund. It also has a special Sunshine on Sale offer of a fifth night free and free daily breakfast for two at Ka‘ana Kitchen. Affiliated with the World of Hyatt program, Hana-Maui Resort currently has special offers that include perks such as triple Hyatt points, 15 percent off, or plane ride/Jeep rental with dining and spa credits. The hotel also encourages donations to the Maui relief efforts of World Central Kitchen, American Red Cross and the Maui Strong Fund. For those just not able to travel to Maui this fall, Costello suggests an appealing alternative. “Come back with the whales,” she said, referring to the annual migration of humpback whales from Alaska to Maui, roughly from mid-December through late March.

That said, the Valley Isle does need visitors. Since tourism accounts for nearly all of the Maui economy, the empty streets are reminding locals of the pandemic. Governor Josh Green recently said that the state had received more than 15,000 applications for unemployment benefits from Maui residents in the six weeks following the fire. While anyone can help Maui by donating to relief efforts or by supporting hospitality employees and small businesses directly, mindful travelers would provide a huge boost. “There can’t be any better recovery plan than visitors who can come help us rebuild by putting our community back to work,” Duong said.

With 108 wineries spread across 12 approved American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), Mendocino County is not easy to capture. Perhaps best known for producing excellent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Mendocino’s 17,470 acres planted to wine grapes are split between Chardonnay (about 4,800 acres), Cabernet Sauvignon (2,860 acres) and Pinot Noir (2,695 acres). That leaves more than 7,000 acres of vines that grow some of the most interesting white wines in California. Ten of the region’s AVAs form something like a tilted “V,” stretching from the Potter Valley northeast of Ukiah to the V’s vortex south of Hopland (where Campovida hosts a tasting room) then aims west, roughly along Highway 128, to the V’s second point near Navarro. (The region’s Covelo and Dos Rios AVAs are north of Willits.) The Anderson Valley AVA, first recognized in 1983, stretches from south of Boonville to Navarro. One of the top regions for American Pinot

Noir, so-called cold climate whites — Pinot Gris, White Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc — thrive in the Anderson Valley AVA’s unique geography and somewhat chiller climate, its vines planted amidst rolling hills studded with madrones and sheep. A weekend spent discovering these wines is easiest during White Wine Weekend (February 18–19, 2023) but can be done anytime. If you are driving up from Marin, begin your exploration of the Anderson Valley AVA with a stop at Pennyroyal Farm. Just east of Boonville on the valley’s east side, the farm’s expansive tasting room is a quasi-welcome center for the region. A farm tour of the solar-powered barn is a chance to meet the many goats and sheep before sitting down to a wine and cheese flight. My kids were invited to take part in their own “wine tasting,” too — glasses of Navarro Vineyard’s gewürztraminer, pinot noir, and verjus juice accompanied their cheeses.

A short drive away in the town of Boonville, the Boonville Hotel and Restaurant is where chef Perry Hoffman (formerly of Healdsburg’s SHED) works magic with local produce and proteins. Chef ’s seasonally driven prix fixe tasting menus, like many other eateries in town, is available Thursday to Monday, and subject to the whims of Mother Nature. Today’s pan-roasted rock cod and mussels with green garlic broth may soon give way to smoky pork with gigante beans and garden herbs, or paella with shrimp, chorizo and saffron aioli. One of the Mendocino’s iconic vineyards is located in the hills northeast of Boonville: Skycrest . Named by La Crema winemaker Eric Johannsen, Skycrest Vineyard is Anderson Valley’s highest elevation vineyard, soaring over 2,000 feet and up to 2,500 feet. Mostly above the fog line, the vineyard’s grapes receive more sun and wind exposure and cooler temperatures than the valley floor. Less fertile soil is a factor. Shallower, rockier, and well-drained decomposed sandstone is its norm. As a result, “the vines are generally less vigorous,” says Johannsen, “and tend to produce fruit that is more concentrated and structured.” This terroir leads winemakers like Johannsen to seek out Skycrest Vineyardgrown grapes for their inherent elegance and finesse “taken to a further level of intensity and density,” Johannsen says. “Ripe citrus, white flowers, crystalline minerality, and structural tension… the wines are utterly compelling and evoke the dichotomous tension of cool ocean influence and severe mountain terrain.” Call ahead to inquire of Philo’s Maggy Hawk if their Skycrest Chardonnay is available — it often sells out. Continue a cold-climate white wine tasting at Twomey. Drive through the redwood forest to arrive at a grand tasting room where a shaded patio and glasses

Onwards to Handley Cellars where, in addition to a slate of Pinot Noirs, a white wine tasting may include Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Riesling, among other varietals. The Gewürztraminer’s intense fruit and up-front roundness on the palate give way to a distinct dryness on the finish. It’s a standout. Due west from Boonville lies Douglas

and Ana Lucia Stewart’s Lichen Estate. The renowned wine writer Robert Parker put the former sheep farm on the map in 2006 when he declared their Pinot Gris “the finest in the New World.” Cold-climate whites remain a standout here — the Pinot Gris retains its Parkerendowed stature while the White Pinot Noir, aged mostly in stainless steel before spending a year in Hungarian and French oak puncheons, is so fresh and

lively, it deserves similar attention. Last stop: to experience not only their high elevation Chardonnay but their Chardonnay partner-in-contrast, Valley Foothills Chardonnay. It’s sourced from a south-facing vineyard at 300 feet altitude with hearty alluvial soils. Tastings, held at the winery’s 22-acre property in Philo in the valley’s so-called Deep End, are as casual as any in the valley. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste not only their high-elevation Sauvignon Blanc from Pine Mountain Vineyard but their award-winning Pinot Noirs. No visit to Mendocino is complete without spending a little time in the town of Mendocino. If you can time it to drive the eleven miles through Navarro Redwoods State Park towards late afternoon when the sun is low in the sky, the redwoods make a tunnel of sorts, from which you emerge at the Pacific Ocean. You’ve arrived just in time to check in at Little River Inn. Perched on a bluff over the Pacific, the rooms’ balconies face the sea. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sun go down and sip white wine with the unique cold-climate flavors from Mendocino’s Anderson Valley.

The Quiet Middle Child Love ’em or hate ’em, cranberries become as omnipresent as pumpkin spice once the rainy season begins. Blame the Pilgrims that kickstarted a trend that knows no end, but cranberries are a permanent part of the American culinary repertoire. In cooler months, they make their way into cocktails and sandwiches as well as taking their usual place alongside turkey and trimmings. Take advantage of their antioxidant and nutritive benefits while you can. Novato

19th Hole Bar & Grill at Indian Valley Golf Club, Cranberry Bleu Salad The views over Stafford Lake and

the wooded, rolling hills of northern Marin are just part of the appeal at a public golf course and restaurant.

The menus skew American with a pancake, egg and sausage breakfast platter named for Jack Nicklaus, and burgers and classic club and Reuben sandwiches at lunch. Dressed with balsamic vinaigrette, dried cranberries and toasted almonds, the Cranberry Bleu salad hits sweet and savory notes.

The crumbled blue cheese and Mandarin oranges join forces with toasted walnuts and just the right amount of greens to make each bite worthwhile. 3035 Novato Blvd., Novato; 415.892.5885; indianvalleygolfclub.com Novato

HopMonk Tavern, Tito’s Skinny Breeze

There’s a reason this colorful concoction tops the cocktail list — its broad appeal and refreshing character mean there’s no need to hunt for anything better to slake your thirst. Plus, it’s a friendly drink, shimming up to Korean cauliflower pickle fries or Nashville Hot Chicken with its signature sparkle. Amped up with pineapple and a club soda float, its northern Marin’s answer to the Tequila Sunrise. 224 Vintage Way, Novato; 415.892.6200; hopmonk.com

The Art of Wabi-Sabi When designing her Japanese modern Larkspur home, Marin designer Pamela Hayes embraced the beauty of imperfection. BY LOTUS ABRAMS PHOTOGRAPHY BY KURT LAI xx

Designer Pamela Hayes has spent the past 25 years designing homes for clients in Marin and San Francisco, developing lasting relationships along the way with industry pros ranging from contractors to cabinet makers. When she finally got the opportunity to design and build her own home in Larkspur from the ground up, Hayes knew exactly who she wanted on her dream team, which included McCoppin Studios architect Ned White and Flint Construction. “One of the reasons I was motivated to do this is because of those relationships,” Hayes says. “I worked with the contractor for many years, for example. I knew that if I was ever going to do this,

Hayes often describes herself as an interior architect rather than an interior designer, since she specializes in helping clients select materials and finishes like windows, railings, tile and cabinetry, and she draws all of the plans herself. This meticulous approach to design is evident in her own home, where she carefully considered each decision. Large-format concrete floor tiles and graphic black-and-white sea coral-patterned wallpaper embellish the entryway. In the kitchen, the dual-surface Negresco Quartzite and butcher block countertop provides an optimal surface for cooking prep and baking; box beams add visual interest on the ceiling; and the backsplash features tile imported from Japan. LOOKING BACK

BY JIM WOOD

A high-end restaurant named Sir and Star has most recently occupied the nearly 150-year-old Olema Hotel building.* Why that name? Because it is located at the corner of today’s Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and, in the foreground of the accompanying photo, Star Route One, also known as California State Highway One. According to West Marin historian Dewey Livingston, the building was constructed in 1876 by Scandinavian immigrant stage driver John Nelson and moved across the road to the present location in 1879. “Back

then,” says Livingston, “Sir Francis Drake Boulevard was referred to as the ‘Olema road;’ it was a stagecoach route connecting Olema to San Rafael.” This photo was taken “around 1905,” when, according to Livingston, “the two-story structure was already about 30 years old and had been doubled in size.” It depicts the tiny village of Olema — meaning “coyote valley” in Coast Miwok language — which, to this day is a popular stopping spot for tourists heading to Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1919, Henry Fielding Reid of the State

106 N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 3

|

Earthquake Investigating Commission declared Olema to be the epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. But that finding was later recalculated in favor of a point in the ocean off Daly City, some 50 miles south of Olema. However, 147 years after it first opened, the Olema Hotel building is still standing. *The restaurant Sir and Star, is currently closed for remodeling and will reopen, according to owners Daniel Delong and Margaret Grade, “In spring of 2024.”

This body of work embodies movement, gesture, and mark making as contemplative, intuitive processes. In “Relational Listening,” a method developed by the artist, Labovitz’s research-based practice utilizes words that are layered and abstracted through gestural marks, translating verbal to visual.

Robert Green Fine Arts, established 1969, exhibits primarily painterly, abstract expressive work by painters that thoroughly take advantage of the sensually evocative nature of color and form. 154 THROCKMORTON AVENUE, MILL VALLEY CA 94941 • PHONE 415 381 8776 • ROBERTGREENFINEARTS.COM GALLERY HOURS: FRIDAY - SUNDAY 11-5, MONDAY - THURSDAY BY APPOINTMENT
