he September Issue’. It’s a whole thing, did you know? Not only is it the title of a compelling and fascinating documentary, but it’s also somewhat of an illustrious and iconic month for magazines – where fashion mags publish at the end of fashion week in New York, Milan, Paris, and London. This is where some of the most notable fashion houses show their latest collections. Now, Anna Wintour, I am not (I’d rather be Grace Coddington any day), but I often think back to my very first issue of Avenues – we had a photoshoot with many thousands of jewels from Youngs Jewellers on a model posing whilst adorned with a striking kale headdress. Do you remember this issue? September 2022’s issue coincides with four years of me at the helm of Avenues, and I am eternally grateful for your readership and the support of our humble mag from our dedicated clients. I never thought I’d have people approach me in the street and compliment the magazine. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Zombies Hate Stuff is part of visual artist Greg Stone’s collection of slightly amusing coffee table books. This is a delightful collection of imagery detailing the things zombies ‘hate’, ‘don’t mind’, and ‘really hate’. Apart from a one-word description of the undead folks’ dislikes, no words are needed. You’ll understand why they hate what they do. Look, it’s simple but sure to bring a smile to your undead face.

Muru tells the honest story of the Tūhoe raids in 2007 through the lens of those affected. Cliff Curtis, Manu Bennett, and Jay Ryan took leading roles alongside Tame Iti, who proved himself an exceptionally skilful actor. And Poroaki Merritt-McDonald’s portrayal of central character Rusty was well done. I was left reeling from this film. Drama and action interlaced with well-placed and sympathetic humour captured the pace of the unfolding events while not diminishing the humanity of those targeted. Director Te Arepa Kahi is one to watch. I ’ve just come off a high from the New Zealand Film Festival Whānau Mārama. I was flattered to be invited to the opening this year at the brilliant Isaac Theatre Royal to see an incredibly eye-opening and reflective film, Muru – I’ll talk more about this in my review. I couldn’t be more excited for the month ahead. Right smack bang at the start is WORD, a festival we should be proud of as a city. It brings together world-renowned folks in the writing field (from musicians to best-selling novelists) over five full days of literary excellence. I’ve certainly got a big week planned. A couple of my picks are David Mitchell and Tiny Ruins: If I were Story and You Were a Song; An Evening with Lianne Moriarty; Nuku: 100 Kickass Indigenous Women; and The Better Brain. Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival at Canterbury Museum has been a smash hit with Canterbury families. Since April, more than 50,000 visitors have been through to see the skeletons, artworks, and life-sized animatronic dinosaurs. Fossils found recently in China, including skin, soft tissue, spines, and feathers, have revolutionised how scientists picture dinosaurs. Dinosaur rEvolution is a chance to learn about the amazing and sometimes bizarre ways they adapted to survive. It has raised over $1 million dollars to help patients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital with lung cancer. The Arts Centre Sculpture Festival 2022 D ive into the wonderful world of art and sculptures. The Kids Round Here… Artist Bols Date December 2021 Location BOXed Quarter, St Asaph Street Inside the labyrinthine BOXed Quarter, the evocative words of Bruce Springsteen echo: “The kids round here live just like shadows….” Borrowed from Springsteen’s romantic epic Jungleland (1975), the lyrics provide a fitting sentiment for a space filled with twists, turns, and unexpected surprises (including a growing collection of art on the walls). The phrase is painted directly on the wall by local stencil artist Bols in a scaled-up typewriter font, coming into focus through offset grey shades against a black background, the final layer a stark white. The repetition of the line suggests a cacophony of voices whispering the refrain, building to a unified crescendo. Located on a corner wall behind popular music venue Flux Bar inside the BOXed Quarter, the simple monochromatic composition positions the city as a playground where invisibility can be a valuable power, and the shadows are where the interesting things happen. Magical, memorable events

One notable event where Hayley and her team went above and beyond was a 20thanniversary party held at the (at the time) yetto-be-completed BNZ Centre. Hayley mentions the lifts weren’t working as of yet, and the space had limited power – so, somewhat impressively, everything was craned up to the fifth floor. Clearly, Hayley is no stranger to working in hard hats and hi-vis vests!

Expansion is in the near future for Hayley and Co. The rise of hot water in Hanmer Springs

The site became a public establishment in 1883 when the Crown fenced it off for the paying public, and by 1884, work was underway to build a bathhouse.

For some 15 years prior to 1978, community groups had to fight to secure and source Government funding to develop the pools into a larger-scale complex that would enable people to reap the health benefits of the thermal springs.

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa general manager Graeme Abbot says the village has certainly come a long way since the first single dressing shed sat on a very exposed site in the Hanmer Basin. Segregated nude bathing was the order of the day in the early years, and hoisting the appropriate clothing (skirt or trousers) up a pole to indicate the gender of the moment controlled this. Later, separate pools were introduced and, finally, mixed bathing – but swimmers had to be clothed, of course. Graeme says the pools are steeped in history and at its heart is community spirit and support that can’t be beaten.

T hose familiar with Sumner may have spotted Apartment 41 on Nayland Street – a striking modern build by MC Architecture Studio. As a three-storey mixed-use building, the project incorporates a ground-floor retail space and two storeys of an apartment that embraces the scenic view. The project simultaneously complements the surrounding structures yet has an empowering presence. As Apartment 41 stands tall, each elevation was treated as a visible façade, or canvas, highlighting the rhythm and movement created on the frontage of the street. With the expert skill and assistance of PTL Engineering, the project’s Corten steel panelling runs up the wall from the footpath canopy. To celebrate and invigorate each new year at Harcourts Gold, we determine a theme. It’s either of cultural or national significance; something that binds everyone in a common cause and provides a focus beyond a singular financial one. Amongst those themes have been resilience, health and wellbeing, your personal bucket list, sustainability, and giving back… it’s a long and worthy list. The fun part – or celebration aspect – occurs at the end of the year when we acknowledge how our lives have been enriched and enhanced by pitching in, learning new skills, and working collectively. That, and the multiple and beautiful Christmas events. Beyond this are recognition events, awards, and conferences allowing us to celebrate as a company the successes of our team and our business. These culminate in May following the conclusion of the financial year on MarchWith31st.theachievement of national and international awards, these celebrations have been numerous and significant over the years, and although I’m always nervous, I’ve also been deeply grateful to celebrate in style with our teams. The most recent was at our very own Te Pae here in Christchurch, where many from our company were part of an assembly of more than 1,000 people for the Harcourts National Conference. Being recognised there as having New Zealand’s No. 1 Residential Office and Franchise certainly made for a wonderful evening. Those are some of the bigger moments of celebration; the gentle, personal ones are always about family. I am part of a very close family and an equally caring and present extended whānau. That, and the daily presence of my 80-yearold parents, means I get to celebrate one of the most special elements of all, and that’s lifeWeitself.live in the strangest of times, and it’s easy to forget or avoid the simple things that connect us as human beings. By acknowledging the luck I feel living in this incredible country and doing something I love with people I value, I feel I’m celebrating every day.

I’ve become a huge fan of sourdough. The lengthy fermentation, sour tang and when toasted, the confident crunch. Seeded, overnight oat, smoked rye, or fruit with plump dried apricots – each loaf offering something different. Good bread is nutrient dense and can be a highly nourishing source of carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins, minerals, and a host of gut-loving bacteria.

M y appreciation for toast runs deep, from hungry youthful days devouring copious slices of fluffy white bread toasted ’til golden and generously smothered in Marmite and butter. These days I take my toast seriously. It’s the enchanting process of transforming a single slice of bread into a well-seasoned, satiating snack that can turn into a vessel of either familiarity or discovery. It could be the simplicity of salted butter and tart plum jam or lavish experiments such as charred gooseberries with marinated buffalo cheese, coriander, and crispy chilli oil. Often my incentive to toast springs from a desire to want to eat something enticing and delicious with speed and minimal effort. You eat with your eyes, and to me, successful toasting displays visual appeal. One that speaks to seasonality, preservation methods, and, when executed well – a balance of flavour, colour and texture. With each creation, I take the opportunity to re-imagine leftovers and piece together peculiar ingredients. Toppings are the best part. My non-negotiables are butter, salt, and pepper. As a genuine peanut butter nutter, more often than not, PB is involved, mostly crunchy, sometimes a Fix & Fogg fiery number with smoked paprika and cayenne. Pickles are key for acidity and crunch, things like gherkins, kimchi, or pickled cherries. Fresh herbs help brighten, like the surprising combination of goat’s cheese, blackberry jam and mint. Connecting more closely with people in the industry has led me to prioritise good bread.

As a country, we import around 70 per cent of our wheat from offshore, mostly from Australia, yet we have fantastic arable land for growing a whole host of nutrient-dense varieties, and we produce some of the highest quality grain in the world. In my role with Eat New Zealand, we’ve been working towards a Local Grain Economy for Aotearoa. Connecting all aspects of the grain supply chain, from farmers, millers, and scientists through to bakers, chefs and eaters – encouraging more New Zealanders to think about where their flour comes from and ultimately to #EatNZGrains. If we want a resilient and secure food system that doesn’t rely on imports, we must eat local. Next time you’re eating toast, be curious about where the flour comes from. Toast, and subsequently bread, is an act of nature, science, art, and creativity that deserves to be respected and celebrated. I’ll toast to that.

We are inundated with pleasurable things to eat across this growing cityscape. Forever searching for something that both intrigues and delights, our Food Editor Kate Underwood has collated a selection of dishes that serve up a little extra charm, from the levelled-up brunch to the fancy twist on lunch.

I’d heard about Fiddlesticks from several Christchurch locals; this establishment serves menus that span all appetites and desires. Located next to the Christchurch Art Gallery, its prime location captures nearby office workers, tram-hoppers, or hungry visitors browsing the latest exhibition. I sit across from a real estate group celebrating their latest sale and a senior couple devouring tempura fish and chips with two fat glasses of pinot noir. I like their style. I overhear people order the FFC (Fiddlesticks Fried Chicken) with candied kūmara and corn salsa, but I’m drawn to devour the chef’s housemade crumpets with hot smoked salmon and poached egg, balanced with sautéed broccoli and lemon vinaigrette. It’s a relaxed yet dignified space, perfect to slip in for a vino and experience a croffle (a croissant/waffle hybrid) served with chorizo, cream cheese, and jalapeno butter.

year, Six Ounces has become a gratifying addition to the Merivale neighbourhood. There’s caffeine to get you going, along with focaccia sandwiches, flaky pastries, and nourishing soup that changes daily. In the evening, it moves to an antipasto paradise, where you can build your dream platter with charcuterie, olives, and a vast cheese offering. I fell hard for the gooey, molten baked taleggio cheese with truffle honey and sliced almonds. Scooped up with crisp garlic crostini, it’s a truly glorious creation. There’s plenty of great wine to sip on, too – including mulled. I appreciate that they take bookings and cater for gatherings, all with a lovely temperament. You and your dog can join resident blue Staffy Brixton and comfortably exist here at any time of day or night. For many reasons, South Town Club (or STC) has become an extension of my home. Owner Dan Hobson and his team serve up delicious daytime fare with a difference at this cosy sundrenched space on Welles Street. Alongside Coffee Supreme brews, it’s the enticing menu that keeps me coming back. Their famous gluten-free triple cheese and spinach scones have become a permanent part of my week, always toasted and lathered in whipped salted butter. But lately, it’s the seasonal omelette, a creation by head chef Jack Shewell, that combines butternut pumpkin, house-made ricotta, fried tobacco onions, crispy sage leaves, and vibrant lemon zest. It’s wholesome and exciting. Regardless of the time, do not bypass the STC fries. You’ll miss chunky spuds tossed in pickled red onion salt with an aged gouda dipping sauce, and that would be a tragedy.

Like@baryokuStreetmanypeople, I come to Bar Yoku for the sushi tacos. Often bringing friends and family from out of town or simply a date with myself. To me, it’s a destination. The epitome of a plate and place you’ll only find here in Ōtautahi. This modern Japanese Izakaya restaurant is situated inside The Welder, dubbed Christchurch’s shared living room; it’s also an event space and home to several businesses, including delightful picktop wine bar Salut Salut. When my midweek lunch needs inspiration and something a bit extra, the Bar Yoku Donburi calls. Essentially a rice bowl with toppings, the ‘Charisu’ is my pick. A selection of sashimi is artfully presented alongside salmon, tamago (Japanese egg omelette), and avocado. Served with a bowl of nourishing miso – on a cold wintry day, this is the tonic. The veggie version is a great move too, where yakitori skewers of teriyaki tofu and mushrooms nestle in next to a pile of pickles and slaw. You can opt for karaage chicken or miso ginger pork, but whatever you choose, order a side of cabbage. Sounds strange, I know, but I genuinely believe it’s the best $4 dish in this city. Raw crunchy chunks of cabbage served with a giant blob of Kewpie (Japanese mayo) and a puddle of ponzu. Genius.

Asado is a South American iteration of the humble BBQ – the point of difference here is the range of flavours able to be cooked right before your eyes. You can add in a whole hog, smoked low and slow over flames, to fuel an epic shared menu. The boys arrive four hours before your event to get the fires going and stay late (up to eight hours duration for a hog).

1 small fennel bulb, shaved

1 tsp of dijon

Serves 4–6 Marinade the lamb shoulder overnight with all the remaining ingredients. The next day, bring the lamb to room temperature and place the lamb and marinade in an ovenproof dish with ½ cup of water and cover tightly. Cook the lamb in a 160°C fan bake oven for three hours. Remove foil and cook for a further 15 minutes to caramelise the top and reduce the braising juices. Skim off some of the fat if you like. Toss the peeled and sliced carrots with olive oil, salt, and a pinch of chilli flakes and roast at 220°C for about 15–20 minutes. Cool. Mix the herbs, baby greens, fennel, and carrots gently together with the dressing. Serve the lamb with thick yoghurt, flatbreads, the salad, and a sprinkle of sumac.

A aaaaah, the smell of BS in the air. It must be election season. I was first elected to the City Council in 2013, and I have to say this year feels a lot like it did then. There’s a sense of “we’re right on the cusp of something great but need new energy and common sense” and “I want more than constant bickering about cycleways”. I am not saying either of these are, on their own, good reasons to vote anyone in or out, but the vibe is very 2013. This time, as in 2013, a group of us have gathered to support one another, “the women standing up for Christchurch,” I call us. We aren’t politically aligned and don’t agree on everything, but we are stronger together, and I like them. It was similar nine years ago when the “indies” – including Raf Manji, Vicki Buck, Lianne Dalziel, and myself – put our hands up, and there was quite a clean-out around the council table. What has changed this time, and for the worse, is a significant increase in social media abuse and trolling. Sure it has always been around, but it feels more aggressive, very personal, and even more thoughtless and childish. Maybe I am being naïve, but I want social media to provide an opportunity for people to debate issues – respectfully and with a modicum of intelligence. Instead, the keyboard warriors whack out a steaming pile of rubbish, and I am sick of it. More and more, I am calling people out. You can’t do this forever, and there comes a point when you block them, ban them, report them or respectfully agree to disagree. Robust discussion is great for democracy and expanding one’s ideas and positions on certain issues. Goodness knows I have changed my mind on more than one occasion as a result of listening to someone else’s point of view and weighing it up with my own. Of course, in politics, this is called “flip-flopping”, and if you aren’t flexible enough to change your mind, you’re intractable or something far worse, which I can’t write here. You can’t win!

“For the past 14 years, the Nurse Maude Hospice has operated out of the ground floor of the old Nurse Maude Hospital, and, while the quality of care remains exceptional, it was never designed, or intended, for end-of-life care,” says Sutherland.

“Here, everything is such a grand scale, and there are still lots of glaciers. And it’s so wild and inaccessible compared to a similar environment in Europe. [There is] just so much more to discover here.

“Yeah, I spend a lot of time in front of the screen for work. And I love it, but sometimes I can get stuck in front of the screen, so I really appreciate when I actually go out and then I feel like ‘aaahh!’”

“I grew up in the Carpathian Mountains, and one of the most spectacular national parks in Poland – Tatra National Park – is not far so I could go just for a day trip. I loved just going for long walks in those mountains when I was a teenager.

“I really wanted to be close to the mountains and nature. In Poland, it’s such a popular pastime to go to the mountains, but there’s lots of infrastructure, so it’s really accessible, but by law, you cannot go off the trail. When I moved to Scotland, it was completely different. They require farmers to make access through their farms so that people can actually access the mountains, which is amazing; it’s just an amazing playground.

“In 2017, I met Sarah, and we started exploring together. But I also wanted to see other places and explore more. We talked about it, and we realised that we’re probably gonna move to New Zealand. Sarah wasn’t ready yet, but we decided to move a bit earlier because of Covid.

“I studied computer science, and when I finished uni, I went to work near my hometown.

“One of my friends went to Glasgow. He told me about this job opening, and two weeks later, I was talking to a Scottish person over the phone. My life changed completely!

“I suppose I thought I might go just for some years and come back to Poland. But I really loved Scottish culture and Scottish people so much. I started going out and exploring the highlands and going everywhere.
