EDITOR’S NOTE

I can’t wait

I’ve grown to embrace the tickle in my nose and the itchiness in my eyes as the days stretch longer and daffodils push their golden heads through the green blanket-like lawns of nearly every corner of Christchurch. Not because I enjoy the irritation but because these signs mean our city is about to burst into life – in every way.

As the bright spring sun tempts us out of our winter slumber, for me, a hibernation state, it also brings a wave of events to our vibrant city: sporting, cultural, agricultural, and even rock concerts!

From league matches and cricket tests to Fast5 netball, basketball, and New Zealand Cup Week, there’s something for everyone. The Christchurch Show is back in full swing, and international artists are hitting the stage. Add in our region’s incredible food and wine, exciting new developments, and a buzzing economy, and Ōtautahi feels alive with optimism and energy – can you feel it?

So, as I pop an antihistamine, I’m eagerly anticipating soaking up everything the best city in New Zealand has to offer this spring. I hope to see you out there!

Yours,

Location Smiths City, Colombo Street

Smiths City has been a part of Ōtautahi’s central city landscape for generations, their Colombo Street base opening its doors as City Market in 1918. Ōtautahi artist Jacob Yikes’ striking mural on the iconic yellow and black Colombo Street building celebrates the company’s longstanding connection to place. A crisp palette pervades the serene landscape; from the mountains to the flowing river, the patchwork of plains to the selection of native flora, the scene is familiar and welcoming. A poised kererū surveys the setting, flanked on either side by the Transitional Cathedral and a Smiths City delivery truck, adding elements of the city and the company’s recent history alongside the sprawling natural beauty. The image is instantly recognisable as both an evocation of the Waitaha Canterbury region and of the artist’s distinctive style, detailed, beguiling, and elegant – a perfect combination.

LOCALS ON SCREEN

Premiering at the NZIFF, Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu’s electric debut, We Were Dangerous, is the story of a fiery trio of delinquent schoolgirls railing against the colonial system in 1950s New Zealand. This is a sensational show of local talent and landscape, some acting on screen for the first time in their careers. Confronting and honest.

GHOSTS ON EVERY CORNER ATAMI BATHHOUSE

GOOD GOD

Kaos on Netflix is a mythological black comedy series by Charlie Covell. The show follows three humans as they uncover their ties to an ancient prophecy while contending with corrupt gods. Jeff Goldblum stars as Zeus, whose paranoia grows after spotting a wrinkle, signalling his reign’s potential end. Cliff Curtis plays Poseidon.

A vivid building with a complex history, Ghostcat’s scratch build of Atami Bathhouse captures another haunting chapter of Christchurch’s past. Mike (aka Ghostcat) found this one the hardest to research, stating, “The stories I’ve heard are too graphic for the book. We’re not celebrating what happened, but rather its iconic status in Christchurch.” His favourite feature is the beautifully intricate stained glass windows, which were also the most challenging to recreate at such a small scale.

HAIRLINE HOLIDAY

Just a quick three-hour flight away, the solution to hair loss and restoration awaits. Avenues’ editor Liam shares his experience getting a FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) Hair Transplant at Sydney’s Elite Hair Clinic.

Like nearly 50 per cent of the global male population, I’ve struggled with male pattern baldness, with the vast majority of men experiencing some form of hair loss in their lifetime.

After considering options, including the long 28-hour journey to Türkiye, I discovered Elite Hair Clinic, a specialist clinic in central Sydney. Their team’s credentials convinced me: over 25 years of industry experience, top specialists, and competitive pricing. Plus, the peace of mind that a direct flight to Christchurch would have me home in just a few hours. With an up-to-date passport, getting to Sydney was as easy as a trip to Auckland.

After an online consultation with one of their specialists, Dr Will Jarvis, I had a detailed plan. From start to finish, the team was compassionate, knowledgeable, and utterly professional. Equipped with a comprehensive pre-procedure plan, I was ready to travel across the ditch.

You should arrive at least a day before the procedure – turn it into a mini holiday!

The procedure day began with an early start for the 10-hour process. Although it sounds long, it’s nothing to worry about – plan your Netflix binge or playlist in advance. The procedure is divided into three stages: harvesting, where follicles are taken from a donor area (in my case, the back of my head, which isn’t affected by pattern baldness); preparing the recipient area; and finally, transplanting the donor follicles. The process includes plenty of breaks and a nutritious lunch, and it is completely painless thanks to local anaesthetic.

Post-operative care is straightforward, with clear instructions, an aftercare kit, and 24/7 support via WhatsApp – an extra reassurance for international clients like me. This support continues throughout the year, and the team will check in as my hair grows over the coming months.

Forget Türkiye; Elite Hair Clinic in Sydney is just three episodes of Breaking Bad away.

BLACKCAPS V ENGLAND TEST

Hagley Oval

28 November–2 December

Ōtautahi Christchurch will be hosting the first Test match this summer between the BLACKCAPS and England! The Test will be played from Thursday 28 November to Monday 2 December 2024 at Hagley Oval, one of New Zealand’s most picturesque cricketing venues. This is a great few days out for all the family. Get the sunblock ready and pack the picnic – you might even catch a six!

SIPPING IN THE SUN

On Saturday 7 December, the South Island Wine and Food Festival returns to the stunning setting of North Hagley Park.

When the gates open, guests will be welcomed to indulge in some of the finest wines produced on the South Island – from Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs to Pinot Noirs from Central Otago and Chardonnays from North Canterbury. All accompanied by some of the best local fare.

New to the event this year is The Restaurant Showcase, which will feature 10 restaurants from around Christchurch, serving up three or four signature dishes.

“The aim is to highlight the chefs behind their delicious food offerings and create an opportunity for festival-goers to do some food and wine pairings,” says Callam Mitchell, from the festival’s organiser Team Event.

Also returning this year are some familiar favourites, including The Charity Auction.

“We also have a Mumm Champagne area, which will include some of Christchurch’s best house DJs, and the beer garden will be located next to this.”

It’s sure to be a party, with plenty of live music filling the air.

For those planning to attend, there are several ticketing options available, but they’re selling fast, so it’s best to get in now. General Admission tickets grant you entry to the festival, where you’ll receive a complimentary souvenir tasting glass and access to all the festival’s free features, including entertainment, wineries, and food producers.

For those in search of further luxury, Sergios presents the VIP Experience. This exclusive package includes a luxurious menu prepared by local chefs paired with a curated selection of wines from the festival’s exhibitors. You’ll also enjoy the perks of

reserved seating, ensuring your group has the best view of the live music stage.

Connoisseur tickets have already sold out. Those who secured these passes will be treated to a range of extra benefits, including early entry and complimentary tasting tokens.

Callam says there are a couple of things attendees can do to make their time at the festival as enjoyable as possible.

“Arrive earlier in the day to enjoy a wander around the festival and see all we have to offer. Check out the activations and make your way around the wineries, not forgetting to sample some of the delicious food from The Restaurant Showcase and our hand-picked food truck vendors. Then, get your groove on at the main stage, or perhaps around the Mumm Beats & Bubbles area with the house DJs.”

Attendees are also reminded to bring cash. While some vendors will offer EFTPOS services, having cash on hand will save you from standing in long queues. Also, don’t worry about packing a lunch – with such a wide variety of food and drink vendors, there’s no need to bring your own. In fact, homemade or commercial food and beverages will be confiscated at the gate, so leave the Marmite sandwiches at home.

And don’t forget to slip, slop, and slap, as the event is outdoors in the height of the Canterbury summer. Pack sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, or a poncho if rain is in the forecast. Some natural shade is available at the venue, but it’s always best to come prepared for the elements.

Whatever way you choose to enjoy the day, it’s set to be a celebration of something our island does so well – food and wine.

MERIVALE’S

HEART

Nestled alongside Hagley Park, these eight new luxurious homes by designHOME offer a unique blend of urban sophistication, exceptional living, and serene natural surroundings.

Have you seen some of the new contemporary homes popping up around Hagley Park? One such example is a delightful offering of eight luxurious homes off Carlton Mill Road, which are redefining modern living with a graceful fusion of classic and cutting-edge design.

From the outset, designHOME_Merivale wanted to stand out for its distinctive architectural style. More than that, their latest Merivale development seeks to meet the needs of our changing demographic and lifestyle requirements. Developer Craig Pickett explains more, saying, “I’m seeing how people are looking to move out of larger houses and prioritise themselves, whether with travel, hobbies or being more accessible to the city.”

Drawing on his own experience, Craig knows the challenges of maintaining a large section and home. “I built on a large section in Kennedys Bush about five years ago. I found that every weekend was spent gardening, washing windows, and maintaining the property. I’m over that!”

In contrast, these three and four-bedroom homes offer a place where you can still enjoy a high-end lifestyle but in an easy, lower-maintenance home. All eight of these properties have top-end finishings and sheltered al fresco outdoor areas. Plus, they’re just a step or two away from tennis, golf, and limitless walking opportunities the park offers. Suitable for families, empty nesters or those seeking a lock-and-leave town abode, each home exudes luxury living and feels like a penthouse at a five-star hotel. Highly regarded architect Case Ornsby designed the homes and aimed to create a visually striking yet harmonious environment. Conscious of the ‘borrowed landscape’ of Hagley Park, Case has

designed each of the residences to maximise the stunning views of the expansive park, while providing carefully curated landscaping to give a smooth transition from the urban streetscape to the natural environment.

Inside, the homes embody a refined simplicity. The interiors have a natural material palette that includes Italian stone, timber, and metallic accents. High ceilings and expansive glazing create bright, airy spaces, while dark accents and natural fibres add depth and texture. The bathrooms are designed with timeless elegance, featuring floor-to-ceiling stone tiles, gently curved vanities, and brushed bronze fittings that echo the building’s external materials.

Poliform kitchens add a touch of Italian craftsmanship and seamless design to the heart of each home. For added convenience, interior lifts are available, allowing the twostorey homes to function as single-storey residences if preferred.

“We’ve had strong interest from buyers, with negotiations underway on some of the homes. Everyone who visits is always pleasantly surprised by the generous proportions of the interior spaces,” says Craig. “Also, how quiet the homes are, and the stunning views, are definite draw cards.”

Situated at the intersection of urban vibrancy and natural tranquillity, this development provides an exceptional living experience. Its thoughtful design and prime location offer a unique opportunity to enjoy the best of both worlds – a modern, sophisticated lifestyle with the serenity of a park-side setting.

designHOME has partnered with Belle Interiors to furnish 27 Carlton Mill Road and is running open homes throughout October.

SPEND THE WEEK RIGHT

Mark your calendars because, as spring blankets the city in blossom and sunshine, Christchurch’s hottest week of events is set to return in style again with NZ Cup Week at Riccarton Park.

This Canterbury social highlight attracts punters from all over the country. It features high-class racing, fashion, food, and entertainment across three days (Saturday 9, Wednesday 13, and Saturday 16 November). This is when the region celebrates all that is great about spring in Christchurch.

Riccarton Park’s Chris Rowe says 2024’s event is set to be one of the best.

“We’ve got something for everyone this year. The entertainment off the track will be as thrilling as the action on it,” he says. Saturday 9 November marks the return of NZ 2000 Guineas Day. This day also kicks off the party with The Grand Tour Racing Festival. Australian DJ sensation Hot Dub Time Machine will have everyone grooving with his iconic blend of nostalgic hits, live from the GA Stage. The Grand Tour Bar and the ZM Entertainment Zone keep the party alive all week.

This week is also Canterbury’s most fashionable. A highlight and longstanding tradition, The Ned Fashion in the Field makes a glamorous return. On Wednesday and Riccarton Cup Day, categories include everything from Best-Dressed Man to Something Borrowed, Something Blue, Millinery, Classic Racewear, and you can book a fashion package at just $165 per person, making the runway just as competitive as the track.

To take in Cup Week, a variety of ticket options are available – from early bird tickets starting at $20 for general admission to more exclusive hospitality packages for groups. There’s something for every taste

and preference – whether that is enjoying the buffet luncheon included in the multipack race day package or securing a private hospitality area.

If you really want to make the most of NZ Cup Week, Riccarton Park’s VIP packages are the way to go. The Promenade Hospitality and The Promenade Villas offer elevated viewing on a raised platform with the best vantage point of the track. Perfect for larger groups of up to 50, The Promenade Private Villas is luxury redefined – complete with a private lawn, a three-stage gourmet barbecue lunch, premium beverages, a private bar, TAB facilities, and exclusive access to Member areas. ON THE ROAD

COMING ROUND THE MOUNTAIN

Editor Liam Stretch takes the Subaru Forester SUV X Sport for a spin, equally at home on city streets as it is off the beaten track.

Subaru feels like a Kiwi staple despite being made halfway across the globe in Japan. Perhaps it’s because Subaru thrives on New Zealand roads, effortlessly blending rural toughness with city sophistication – truly versatile.

When Armstrongs Subaru offered me the chance to test drive the Forester SUV X Sport, I was excited to see what the fuss was about and why so many New Zealanders choose to return to the brand.

The moment I set off from Armstrongs’ St Asaph Street yard, I was struck by how safe and secure I felt in the Forester. Its easily adjustable electronic seat and generous road clearance give an immediate sense of security – made even more reassuring by the five-star safety rating.

Despite its grit and off-road capability, the Forester SUV doesn’t feel overbearing on the road. It fits perfectly into Christchurch’s more narrow city centre streets – something I appreciate as a CBD dweller. This is, in part, thanks to its flat Boxer engine, resulting in a low profile. Even though it’s a compact SUV, there’s no compromise on space or style.

Let’s talk about that styling for a minute. I’ve come across a few SUVs that lack in the looks department, often compromising functionality for curb appeal. This certainly isn’t the case for this model. The X Sport’s orange exterior trims and matching interior accents draw attention to its 18-inch black alloy wheels. The dark blue shone in the milky late afternoon spring sun. The Forester X Sport is available in Ice Silver Metallic, Crystal White Pearl, Sapphire Blue

Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, and Magnetite Grey Metallic, while the wider Forester SUV range is available in a broader range of colourways. It’s surprisingly quiet to drive, but once you switch to X-Mode, the Forester transforms. X-Mode boosts performance by reducing wheel spin on slippery surfaces, steep climbs, and rough terrain. This added a sense of safety as I ascended from the plains up to the Port Hills. Subaru’s EyeSight technology, including throttle management, brake assist, and lane-keeping features, kept me firmly planted on the winding Dyers Pass Road.

Connecting my phone to the Apple CarPlayenabled head unit was seamless, and I even managed to take a work call while cruising around the city. A space-age highlight is the gesture control feature, allowing you to adjust cabin temperature with just a wave of your hand. Impressive, right? And the Driver Monitoring System? You’ll feel like Han Solo or Captain Kirk! Facial recognition remembers your seat height, mirror position, and display settings, while also issuing warnings for drowsiness or wandering eyes – no slacking off here!

I had a couple of errands to run while testing out the car, and with a boot full of work gear, the smart boot feature is a lifesaver. Keyless entry and automatic opening make juggling groceries, work equipment, and even a schnauzer effortless.

The Forester SUV X Sport is not the only member of this family, and the full lineup offers something for everyone, with models ranging from the Standard version to Sport, Premium, e-Boxer Hybrid, and e-Boxer Hybrid Premium.

Portrait of the real estate market in spring

It’s spring, so what better time is there for a personal market overview from a veteran (that’s me!)? Let’s explore together what’s been happening and consider factors underpinning the real estate market here in the Garden City.

As we all know, spring is traditionally the time of year when people prepare to commit to selling or purchasing. This activity can incorporate numerous demographics, including first-home buyers, investors, developers, and traditional sellers.

It’s a well-rehearsed process, but given New Zealand’s recession and dramatic changes to employment figures, the Christchurch market stands out nationally for its stability and growing confidence.

In August, we had a much-talkedabout Official Cash Rate reduction and consequently saw several banks reduce their interest rates. Yahoo!

This move, according to BNZ Chief Economist Mike Jones, was something that up to 75 per cent of mortgage lenders had been waiting for – personally, I would have thought it would have been 100 per cent!

The effect of this has been a greater sense of affordability and confidence, which flowed through to first-home buyers, representing a much larger percentage of purchasers than I’ve seen in many years.

This group of buyers is ever-present at open homes and auction rooms, bidding hard and pursuing with vigour that first step on the property ladder, sometimes accompanied by parents or their young families.

In our company, I’m noticing more activity in the higher end of our local market, with significant sales of properties in the $1.5 million to $3.5 million bracket as owners choose to acquire something smaller and more manageable or simply “take money off the table” – as I’ve been told by some – to invest in or support other business interests.

We have also been involved in sales in the $7–8 million bracket this year – one last week was in the mid $5 million range. These – often discreet – sales of magnificent homes prove that, as a region, we have our own share of very special properties.

Investors are present, but with rates of return not what they were and with fluctuating employment, there’s more selling than purchasing of the types of units or townhouses that once sat firmly in this category. And the belief that garages are no longer required is certainly being challenged by purchasers who don’t want their cars on the street – or even a street or two away.

So, if we add all of this together, what else is there to comment on? One answer is listings – large numbers of them; in fact, last month in our Papanui office, there were 90 listings and 80 sales!

In 25 years of real estate, I have never seen so many properties present at this time of year.

It’s going to be a competitive market; buyers will certainly have choice, owners need to be thoughtful, and there’s potential for a busy run-up to Christmas.

So, there you have it, an overview of the Christchurch real estate market this spring.

A GALLERY EXPERIENCE

Stoke Fireplace Studio has unveiled its latest hidden gem in Sydenham, Christchurch, setting a new standard for how fireplaces are experienced – you won’t think about fireplaces in the same way.

Led by Mick Kain, the studio occupies a newly renovated showroom on Byron Street. For Mick, this showroom emphasises fireplaces’ versatility, not just for warmth but also for art, innovation, and design.

“We’re so proud of our new showroom,” Mick says. “It really is the city’s hidden secret. We’re so excited for locals to come in and see it for themselves.” This sentiment was shared by those who attended the opening evening on 5 September.

Stepping into the Stoke Fireplace Studio feels like entering the Louvre of heating, where fireplaces are not just displayed but curated for maximum impact, offering a full range of gas, wood, and electric fireplaces, whether you are looking for a simple solution to replace an existing fireplace, or building an architecturally designed home.

Stoke is redefining the idea of the fireplace, showing that they can be as innovative and beautiful as they are functional. The showroom is a gallery of world-class products featuring an expertly selected range from some of the world’s leading brands. The collection includes New Zealand South Island-designed and made Escea gas, wood, and electric models, the exclusive MODE gas fireplaces and a European favourite, Spartherm wood fires. Each model exudes sophistication and style, chosen to fit a range of tastes from the minimalist to the grand.

“Our goal is to present a thoughtfully selected range,” Mick explains. “We want our customers to be confident that every fireplace they see

here has been chosen for its quality, innovation, and beauty.” The approach is not about offering the largest collection but the best.

With a focus on quality and choice, the curated range offers a balance of design and performance, elevating the fireplace from a functional item to a central piece of home décor.

Beyond the impressive range of products, however, what truly sets Stoke Fireplace Studio apart is the team’s dedication to customer service. Every project is tailored from concept to completion, ensuring the fireplace complements the home’s unique character and lifestyle. The team works closely with homeowners, architects, and designers to make sure every fireplace fits perfectly into the space.

This hands-on approach extends to the installation process, which is managed expertly thanks to Stoke’s experienced project management team.

“It’s about providing a seamless experience where every choice is intentional and delivers the best possible outcome for our customers.”

Stoke’s connection with Christchurch’s architectural and design community runs deep. By keeping their finger on the pulse of the latest trends, they can offer fireplaces that don’t just heat a room but transform it. This can be said for the exclusive MODE range, known for its sleek design and impressive heating capacity, which has already become a firm favourite.

Stoke Fireplace Studio promises to be the place to start for homeowners looking to renovate, build, or upgrade their heating solution. It’s where you can slow down and appreciate designer fireplaces in situ; quality and design are paramount, and the customer is at the heart of everything.

Revitalising an architectural icon

Noah’s Hotel, built in the 1970s, quickly became an icon within the city, not only for its slick modernist appearance but also because of the hotel being the location of many memorable events for both visitors and locals alike. Many people – myself included – have fond memories of dinners, weddings, and functions held within the hotel.

It was designed by Donald Crone, a Sydney architect responsible for many of that city’s central buildings. Rumour has it that Mr Crone was keen on a wee tipple, constantly carrying a hip flask with him, and that was perhaps the inspiration for the building’s form. I would suggest that a more elegant reason for the west façade’s gentle curve is that it simply complements the curve of the Avon River in front.

Later rebranded as Rydges, the hotel was one of the few tall buildings that survived the earthquakes. The tower structure, with its concrete core flanked by the fluted concrete end walls, proved to be more than a match for the shaking.

Recently purchased by joint venture partners Mainland Capital and Russell Property Group, the old hotel will be brought back to life with a grand entrance, more guest rooms, and a

stylish restaurant and bar offering extending the building’s full length along Oxford Terrace. Set to become Christchurch’s premier food and beverage al fresco dining destination, the new design of this space sees it opening out to the Avon River, sheltered from the easterly and benefitting from full afternoon sunshine.

The 15th-floor rooftop bar will be the highest in Christchurch, affording great views over Hagley Park and the Southern Alps beyond.

Dalman Architects are proud to be involved in bringing this well-loved iconic hotel into the 21st century. The revitalised design maintains and celebrates many of the building’s key features such as the elegant gentle curves, the strong horizontal window arrangement, the white colour scheme, and internal circular stair. A new double-height lobby off Worcester Boulevard will now provide the hotel with the impressive entrance it had always deserved.

Christchurch has lost much of its heritage and this is the best example of a tall, modernist building that remains in the city. The retention of the revitalised hotel will provide a strong connection to our city of the past and its collective memory well into the future, taking its place as a much-loved iconic building of the ‘new’ Christchurch to be enjoyed by all.

The sixth love language

They say the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach, and I’ve spent most of my life trying to prove that theory right. Food has this incredible ability to transcend words, becoming a language in its own right. Back in 1992, Gary Chapman introduced us to the Five Love Languages. This concept has been popularised, with online quizzes helping people discover how they give and receive love, not just with partners, but with family and friends too. But I believe Gary missed the most crucial love language of them all: food.

This sixth love language beautifully encompasses those that preceed it. Words of affirmation? Think of the sounds of butter browning, the pop of pork belly, or the teapot whistling sweet nothings in your ear. Quality time? It’s the hours spent dreaming up a meal, sourcing the finest ingredients, and lovingly preparing something delicious to share. Physical touch? The kneading of dough, stirring of pots, crushing of garlic, and that simple act of lifting a fork. Acts of service? It’s in the meals we create for those we care about most, hoping they might offer to do the dishes in return. And gift-giving? It’s doubling a recipe and dropping off muffins to a friend who’s had a tough week or offering a fresh loaf and some sourdough starter to your new neighbour.

I feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by people who share this same love language.

Each person in my life is tied to a memory, a dish, a flavour. There’s Mum’s curried eggs – an Edmonds cookbook dish her mother would cook for her. We now savour this for when it’s just the two of us.

Then there’s Dad’s sticky Vietnamese pork belly, always cooked to the dinky tune of a YouTube recipe playing on repeat.

I’ll never forget Katie’s bacon asparagus pasta and the nights in 2012 spent boiling pots of penne, laughing and crying over boys we now haven’t thought of in years.

And who could forget the barbecued prawn tacos with Barkers of Geraldine peach and mango chutney (a must-try!) on New Year’s Eve. The dinner table adorned with empty bottles of wine, filled with hydrangeas that we had sent the boys out to gather under the disguise of last night’s full moon.

These days, my gatherings are quieter, more intimate and far from the wild nights fuelled by bottom-shelf tequila. Instead of loud music and oven fries, my evenings ‘out’ are mostly spent ‘in’ with close friends, a bottle of red, freshly baked focaccia on the table, and a tub of Rollickin gelato in the freezer. These moments remind me that the best things in life are often the simplest, shared with good food and even better company.

As your new food editor, I’m excited to share my culinary musings with you, explore the best hospitality spots around our city, and share hosting tips and recipes from my kitchen to yours.

Homage to fromage

Kathryn Paulsen’s 1971 book, The Complete Book of Magic and Witchcraft, claims, “You may fascinate a woman by giving her a piece of cheese”. I, for one, have never found anything to be more accurate. These four establishments, experts in this particular lactose-forward division of witchcraft, have perfected the art of cheesy seduction. Join me in exploring these local gems and their utterly spellbinding dishes.

OMI SUSHI

180 Papanui Road @omisushi.nz

Omi Sushi, a ‘pick your own’ sushi bar situated in the heart of Merivale, is teeming with lunchtime visitors and boasts a modern, bright interior framed by a broad glass façade that makes it nearly impossible to just walk on by. Inside, the warm welcome from owner Jordan sets the tone before you’ve even taken your first bite. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, you’ll feel the excitement build as you eye up the colourful array of sushi on offer. Pair your selection with a hearty cup of miso soup, a comforting bowl of Japanese curry, or a freshly made rice ball if you’re on the move. While I always hope I’m not too late for the tuna inari, it’s the fried chicken that never fails to slap a smile on my face with options like honey soy, sticky spicy, and cheddar cheese. That’s right, cheddar cheese! A crispy exterior, juicy meat, and a dusting of cheddar powder that adds a deliciously sweet note.

THE ATHENS YACHT CLUB LONDO

179 Victoria Street @theathensyachtclub

Without exception, whenever The Athens Yacht Club is mentioned in conversation someone invariably utters, “You have to try the flaming cheese!” Never has a recommendation lived up to the hype as much as this flamed cheese saganaki. A Greek halloumi dish that captivates both the eyes and the palate. Eyes turn as the sizzling hot skillet approaches our table. Boasting a golden, crispy crust with an irresistibly soft and gooey interior, this cheese knows it has the attention of the room. In front of our eyes, the cheese is doused in a splash of Metaxa and then dramatically set alight, sending a burst of blue and orange flames skyward. The fire caramelises the outer layer further, adding a subtle, smoky flavour to the magic trio that is halloumi, honey, and oregano. This dish is a sensory delight, and a must-try when visiting this Grecian oasis.

Unit 6/2 Papanui Road @londo.bar

Small in stature, Londo is fierce in food. Head chef Robert Fairs crafts dishes that excite your taste buds and mind, melting with anticipation for each bite. I’ve frequented Londo many times now, so when I think ‘cheese’, I can’t help but give a special nod to a dish now long gone from their menu: a garden salad with goat’s cheese sorbet. I still dream about this sorbet. Consider this my bid to the boys to revive it in some form. On my most recent visit, the cheesy hero was stracciatella, blanketed by fennel, a vibrant sprinkle of lemon zest, chives, and toasted hazelnuts. Spread on toasted Grizzly sourdough, it was bliss. Let’s just say, happy bellies barely begins to describe how we felt. Put your trust in host Harry Findlay, who will marry your menu with the perfect poison. I kicked off my evening sipping a frozen vodka martini, before getting whisked away by the wine list and the dishes that followed.

GRIZZLY BAKED GOODS

22 Welles Street and 33 Buchan Street

@grizzlybakedgoods

Whether it’s a bear claw on Buchan, a croissant on Cashel, a milk loaf from the market, or a flat white on Welles, Grizzly’s offerings are absolutely irresistible. However, the real gamechanger was the discovery of Grizzly deliveries straight to my door, making it even easier to enjoy their baked goods... without even leaving the comfort of home. Thank me later! The vanilla cheesecake doughnut takes the cake for me. She’s fluffy and pillowy, soft but with a light chew. Inside, a smooth, velvety, utterly luscious and delicately sour vanilla cream cheese filling awaits. A sprinkle of freeze-dried raspberries tops the custard, while the outer layer of the bombolini-style bun is blanketed in a puff of powdered sugar that promises to make a beautiful mess. Not only can you find these treats at any of the Grizzly stores, but this sweet sensation can also be found in café cabinets across Canterbury.

My love affair with cacao

Chelita Kahutianui o-te-Rangi Zainey, Waitaha/Ngāpuhi/Ngāti Kahu/Ngāti Haua

Chelita is a māmā, writer, Kai Rongoā, spiritual mentor, and certified breathwork facilitator. Her passion activates and inspires others to heal and transform their lives into one of aligned purpose, love, and joy.

In recent years, I’ve turned to several tools to nourish and support me as I navigated the depths of my healing journey – breathwork, taonga pūoro, and a tasty elixir I love to refer to as a ‘hug in a mug’.

Cacao traces its origins to South America, but unbeknownst to many, a great deal of cacao is grown here in the Pacific.

If you’ve ever wondered where that delicious chocolate you eat comes from – it’s derived from the little cacao beans that form in the pulpy flesh of a cacao pod, and we use these same beans, ground down to silky perfection, to make our cacao brew.

Cacao, in its essence, is nourishing, amplifying, heart-opening, and heartawakening. Hence, like with any plant medicine, it is important to connect with and set intentions with it.

When I first started connecting and drinking cacao, its message to me was that it was going to ‘heal my heart’, and as the journey has unfolded, it would be fair to say it has worked its magic.

Over the last few years, as my love affair with this delicious, chocolatey brew unfolded, I have had the great joy of collaborating with other cacao magicians like Oonagh Brown (a long-time cacao devotee). We have taken love, care, and intention to weave cacao and

rongoā Māori (traditional medicine) together, and from this, we have created a range of unique cacao blends – the first in the world!

As we become more intentional in our connection to kai and the lands, waters, and farmers that cultivate the nourishment we seek, it’s vital to pause, take a breath, and give gratitude to the hearts, hands, and energies that provide us with such things.

After years of drinking and working with cacao from the Solomon Islands, I recently got to meet some of the hearts and hands that grow this beautiful plant medicine. Listening to their stories of the love, care, and attention they pour into their cacao trees, it suddenly struck me why it feels like you’re being given a giant hug when you sip on their cacao – because it is infused with aroha every day by these amazing farmers, who sing to their trees, harvest by hand, and nurture every one of those plants.

Cacao has helped me to fill a void in a healthy way, by giving me the extra love, support, and nourishment I need every now and then.

If you need the same, I can highly recommend a tasty, chocolatey cacao brew. Create a pocket of time and space just for you and your very own hug in a mug, and remember to take a breath whilst you do so.

Ihad the most horrible fright a few weeks ago as I sat amongst the sold-out audience at my favourite movie theatre, Lumière.

Head South, a locally made film set in Ōtautahi, was the perfect opening to the highlight of the year for fans of all things cinematic, the NZIFF aka Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival. A tangible, excited buzz hung in the air as NZIFF’s Michael McDonald, head of programming and board member Robin Laing, introduced the film and officially opened the event.

This vibrance was shaken by a mention that there was some uncertainty around whether they could hold the festival this year in Christchurch at all. There were some audible gasps and a murmur throughout the crowd, and my blood ran cold as my husband audibly muttered, “I hate to say it, but if that happens, I might be moving to Auckland.”

My husband has lived and worked in Auckland and much prefers to remain in the South, but when an existential threat to his favourite cultural time of year arrives, his loyalty is severely tested. He has been a devoted participant in the NZIFF since his midteens and prefers movie tickets as birthday presents. I have started to stash money away throughout the year in order to join him, and after three rapt seasons, it is abundantly clear how important and exciting this event is for local audiences. Taking place in the dreary, dark days of late winter over August and

early September, it is the perfect treat to look forward to as the days grow longer. There is nothing like seeing a great film on the big screen, for not just the visual, but the audio aspect. Witnessing some of my favourite films such as The Shining, Blade Runner, and Akira in full cinematic glory felt like viewing them for the first time; no matter how good your home theatre is, it just can’t compare to the real picture palace experience.

The highlight of the year for us was witnessing the final performance of our favourite composer, Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus. We have not had the fortune to witness Sakamoto-san play in person, but this incredibly intimate, personal film directed by his son, Neo Sora, brought the magic and beauty of his life’s work to us, right there in the cinema. Neo Sora himself joined us in the theatre after the screening for a Q&A we’ll never forget.

The NZIFF may have lost a few venues in 2024, but the amount of sold-out shows, encore screenings, and audience enthusiasm proves how many people cherish and support the festival. We have an abundance of sport and pop music events, but a specialist occasion that showcases an incredible, diverse array of independent cinema from around the globe is a once-a-year treat for a smaller but just as passionately devoted group of film lovers. We must ensure the NZIFF continues to delight, disturb, and enlighten audiences in Ōtautahi for decades to come.

“Giggly girt! Giggly girt!”

“See, I got my hair cut on Friday. I’ve got my hair band to keep it up. See? Like this, I keep it up.

“Biscuit Blair – she’s my favourite woman. And you. And that cheeky lady over there.

“My last name is Rule. I’ll write it down for you, you silly old duff.

“I was born on the West Coast. I moved here when I was a little girl.

“I like doing pictures here; that’s why I like pictures. Doing art. I like going for a walk. I come here Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.

“My sister – I go see her on Saturday. Have a cup of coffee at home. She’s five, nine. 59. I’m five, seven, 57. This year, I’ll be 58. My birthday’s on a Thursday. I’m having chocolate cake and pizza. And lolly ice cream.

“Some people are noisy. Nicholas and Peter and Chris, they are my friends and that giggly girt over there.

“I get a headache sometimes at [my] other work because [of the] noise.

“I’m happy here. I could go for a walk if I want to. I’m good.”
