EDITOR’S NOTE

Fun in the sun

Picture this: it’s 34 degrees, you’re in the passenger seat of a tiny Suzuki Alto, windows up, and air conditioning off in an effort to make the microlight car as fuel-efficient as possible. You’re trying to avoid any further strain on your wallet as a poor student, cruising along State Highway One on your way back to Christchurch.

Despite the almost literal hell on wheels, you’re loving it because you’ve just had one of the greatest times of your life. I was returning from a New Year’s festival, one of several that kicks off the start of festival season – something that makes New Zealand at this time of year so special, signalling the changing of seasons and the long, hot summer ahead.

The festivals on offer now are many and varied. We have fantastic music events, but also festivals that celebrate our food, wine, culture, and arts. Our city, region, and island are bursting with opportunities to experience the very best they have to offer.

So, get out and enjoy yourself! Whether you’re heading to the South Island Wine and Food Festival in Hagley Park, the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival, soaking up some heavy drum and bass, or leisurely exploring the artworks of Scape Public Art’s new season, there’s something for everyone. I’ll see you out there. Thankfully, I’m now in a position to use the aircon.

Yours,

The A List is back for 2024!

BUILDING OF THE MONTH - OXFORD TERRACE HOTEL

Christmas Encraftment Market

The Christmas Encraftment Market returns this year, with organisers promising old favourites but also plenty of new offerings, all made with love. This month, 130 stalls will fill Pioneer Stadium, creating a curated market where attendees can choose from the best quality artisan products. On offer are items such as art, jewellery, ceramics, toys and games, homeware, candles, bath and beauty products, kids’ and adults’ clothing and accessories, pet products, and indoor plants. One of the organisers, Lee Arthur, says she is excited to tick off many items on her Santa list at this year’s market. “I do a large amount of my Christmas shopping at Encraftment. It’s lovely to gift something that’s meaningfully made and can’t be found at any big mall or mass-produced. At the same time, you can feel good about helping the circular economy by buying local.”

THE SAMANTHA ROOM

Samantha creates originally illustrated stickers and watercolour cards with the hope of spreading happiness. Her motto, ‘cute stuff for nice people’, reflects her goal to brighten customers’ days. Her favourite product is the ‘positivity plasters’, which often make people smile, especially when they see the sparkly ones glisten.

BIBBLES DRIBBLE BIBS

Joe created Bibbles in 2010 to address her son’s excessive dribbling and eczema, using 100 per cent cotton fabrics and a variety of designs. Bibbles bibs quickly became popular among parents of dribbly babies and toddlers. Joe attended the first Encraftment Market in 2011 and appreciates the love for handmade artisan products it fosters.

Untitled Artist Salvo Elias-Drago (@papa.knits) with teethlikescrewdrivers (@teethlikescrewdrivers)

Date September 2024

Location Various locations across central Christchurch

If you wander through central Ōtautahi regularly, the variously sized pencils by local street artist teethlikescrewdrivers are a familiar, if beguiling sight, appearing as stickers, paintings, and paste-ups across the inner-city landscape. However, on more recent wanders, you may have discovered new incarnations of the repeated urban icon. Created as part of the 2024 Yarnarchy festival, Gap Filler’s celebration of yarn bombing and street craft, fibre artist Salvo Elias-Drago’s three-dimensional knitted pencils are strapped to lampposts throughout the city. Schematically sliced into two sections like many of teethlikescrewdrivers’ pencils, Elias-Drago’s versions are tactile and inviting, the contrast to the surrounding environment evident not only in the softer material qualities, but also in the obvious time invested in their creation, carefully translating the details from drawing to craft. These are no spontaneous interventions but instead considered and joyful. These charming installations are a reminder not only of the ability to reimagine the familiar through a new lens but also of the creative potential of the urban landscape.

The Festivals of Common-Unity

Chelita Kahutianui o-te-Rangi Zainey, Waitaha/Ngāpuhi/Ngāti Kahu/Ngāti Haua Chelita is a māmā, writer, Kai Rongoā, spiritual mentor, and certified breathwork facilitator. Her passion activates and inspires others to heal and transform their lives into one of aligned purpose, love, and joy.

Throughout raumati (summer), as the heat of Tamanuiterā beams down upon us, thousands of like-minded and, more importantly, like-hearted festival dwellers roll around the country, attending an array of festivals with a spiritual and conscious vibe.

Firm favourites where you’ll often find me are Aroha Festival (handily located in North Loburn) and NZ Spirit Festival – North and South.

For those ‘not in the know’, these types of festivals have a core focus on spirituality and wellbeing in all its shapes and forms.

Music, dance, a vast array of healing modalities, workshops, epic kai, and shopping for magical goodies are always abundant.

I’ve been attending these festivals for about six years alongside my son, who became a ‘festival kid’ when he was just three!

Since then, he’s attended many gatherings, and it’s become one of the main reasons why I attend – yes, I have a tribe I gather with – but so too does he. Over the years, he’s acquired many ‘festival friends’.

Festival kids live their best lives during these gatherings. With each day that dawns, as soon as he’s awake, my son is out the tent door, usually before I even have a chance to feed him breakfast! Off he’ll race to find his mates, where they’ll spend their day in the kid zone, by the river, or zooming down the flying fox. Adventure is the name of the

game. Every now and then, they’ll reemerge for sustenance before dashing off for the next round of fun.

One of my favourite memories from last festival season was looking for my boy around midnight, after I’d been having a kanikani (dance), to get him to come to bed. These days in ordinary life, you’d probably have cause for concern if your young son was out and about at such a time, but in the safety of the festival community, you learn to trust a different kind of tikanga, one where your kids are free to roam, knowing they are safe and that the village is there to watch out for them.

After a short wander, I saw his little, quite grubby, feet waving carefree in the air as he lay on the ground, his head in his hands, part of a communal circle of his little tribe. I paused for a moment to observe. These little warriors of love looked like they were deeply immersed in their own tribal meeting. I waited a moment before interrupting and gathering him up for a quick shower and bed.

And that’s the magic of festival life. Each and every one of us gathers together to connect, to commune, to sing, to dance, and to heal.

If you’ve never been wrapped in the embrace of a conscious festival before – come give it a try – and make sure to bring your little ones, too.

FEATURE

It’s festival season!

As the seasons change with summer on the horizon, New Zealand is gearing up to show off its festive flair.

Whether you’re jamming to live music, sipping world-class wine, in a foodie’s paradise, or soaking in art and culture, there is something for everyone this season.

THE BEST OF MARLBOROUGH WINE AND FOOD

In its 38th year of delighting locals and visitors alike, the iconic Marlborough Wine & Food Festival has earned its heritage status.

The 38th Marlborough Wine & Food Festival is set to be another midsummer stunner, on 8 February 2025.

Held in the heart of wine county, this iconic festival is designed to delight attendees by making excellent wine and delicious food the centrepiece of a fun day of music and entertainment.

The festival is your opportunity to sample wines from more than 30 Marlborough wineries, including many that don’t have cellar doors open to the public.

Graze and taste at your own pace. Meet growers, winemakers, and others behind the wines you love, as you browse. This is the place to find new favourite brands and varietals, as well as indulge in those you know and love.

And with more than 20 different food providers showcasing some of the best produce from Marlborough, you will find the perfect cuisine to pair with your wine.

All ticket holders will have access to the Culinary Pavilion, where celebrated chefs prepare the best Marlborough produce and artisan foods with their signature flair. In 2024, it was Michael Meredith, Matt Lambert, and Andy Hearnden (of ‘Andy Cooks’ fame). This high calibre of culinary talent continues in 2025, as festival organisers choose chefs who love to entertain as much as they love to cook.

Musicians and bands are handpicked to create the wonderful atmosphere the

Marlborough Wine & Food Festival is famous for. This is a festival that signs the likes of Drax Project, Coterie, Sons of Zion, and Broods’ DJ set. You can expect high-quality acts that round out the perfect day.

The festival’s masterclasses are a destination in themselves, with many festivalgoers shaping their day around one or more of these fun, hands-on, 50-minute classes.

In the Méthode Marlborough Masterclass you will enjoy a selection of Marlborough’s finest sparkling wines, while the winemakers explain the centuries-old process of creating them.

The New Waves of Whites Masterclass is a fresh spin on white wine and cheese pairing – bringing emerging Marlborough white wine varietals to the table to taste and learn to pair perfectly with artisanal Marlborough cheeses.

The Sipping Smarter Masterclass puts low and no-alcohol wines in the spotlight. Marlborough winemakers are meeting increasing demand for these options, without compromising taste and quality.

The South Marlborough Masterclass pairs wines with bites of sustainably sourced meats and seasonal produce, while a local farming family tell their stories about life on the highcounty Middlehurst Station.

The Marlborough Wine & Food Festival is a celebration of the finest wines and delectable cuisine the Marlborough region has to offer.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Saturday 8 February 2025 at Renwick Domain on Uxbridge Street in Renwick. This is strictly an R18 event. There is on-site parking, and the site and facilities are mobility-friendly. Taking buses is encouraged, and bus tickets are available now. General Admission, VIP Retreat, and The Lounge tickets are on sale. A Standard General Admission ticket grants access to the Culinary Pavilion. In addition to the free demonstrations in the Culinary Pavilion, tickets can be purchased for a 50-minute Masterclasses. Exhibitors, wineries, and entertainment are described on the festival website, with more details to come.

SUMMER OF ART

“How does an unseen world affect your physical world?”

From late November, Christchurch will see how seven New Zealand artists answer that question in SCAPE Public Art Season 2024.

SCAPE’s Season is an annual outdoor exhibition of contemporary art designed and produced for public space. The theme for the Season is set by SCAPE’s Managing Curator, Tyson Campbell, who oversees the selection of artists and the creative side of the festival.

Seven large-scale works by professional artists will be installed temporarily in the central city, along with competition-winning work by young people. There are also 15 permanent sculptures produced by SCAPE in the heart of Ōtautahi. Combine all that with the city’s other contemporary and historical sculptures and vibrant street art, and you can happily experience great art at home.

Anyone can engage with public art any time for free. There are no entry charges, no gallery doors, no awkward silences. “Producing public art is exciting and challenging for artists, which is where our experience helps,” says SCAPE Executive Director Richard Aindow. As the public art producer, one of the organisation’s roles is to navigate the engineering, fabrication, consents, and installation of the artworks. “In this job, you get to know a huge amount about some incredible local business: who can manufacture bespoke shapes in steel, who delivers massive blocks of concrete, who transports awkward-shaped items urgently,

who can print on vinyl the size of a multistorey building, to name a few,” Richard says.

Season 2024 includes one pre-existing work: Carry Me With You, 2023, by Darcell Apelu (Niue, Pākehā, Te Āti Awa), which has been on display at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. Apelu’s design encourages visitors to move in and around three concentric structures that refer to the narrative of Tāne Mahuta’s ascent into the heavens and acquisition of three kete (baskets). Apelu lives in Mt Manganui.

SCAPE has commissioned six new works, as diverse as the artists themselves.

Sydney-based Mike Hewson, who trained as an engineer at the University of Canterbury, already has significant public art commissions to his name and is known internationally for his ‘playgrounds’ where carefully considered structures look cobbled together and in danger of collapse. “Mike’s work for SCAPE will have his signature aesthetic and interactivity,” says Richard.

Ming Ranginui (Te Ati Haunui-a-Pāpārangi), who currently lives in Wellington, has devised an artwork that she hopes brings joy, lightness, and a touch of magic to people’s lives.

The remaining four artists all live and work in Ōtautahi Christchurch. They are Ngaio Cowell (Ngaati Te Ata Te Waiohua, Waikato, Ngāti Porou), Julia Holderness, Kulimoe’anga Stone Maka (Tonga, Tainui), and Luke Shaw.

The Season also includes professionally produced artworks by young people who entered SCAPE’s annual Inside Out competitions. “We had record entries this year and want to see this strong creative talent nurtured and celebrated as much as sporting talent,” says Richard.

SCAPE Public Art is running guided walking tours, artist talks, a family art adventure, and other activities throughout the Season; plus, there’s a free app so you can take your own tour any time. Check the website for details.

TASTE THE SOUTH ISLAND’S FINEST

One of the largest festivals of its type in the South Island returns to Hagley Park this summer for the 14th time.

Typically attended by around 10,000 people each year, this year’s South Island Wine & Food Festival on 7 December introduces several new features.

A Restaurant Showcase will profile deliciousness from some of the region’s leading restaurants. At least 35 wineries will again provide the opportunity for regular festival goers and wine enthusiasts alike to meet wine-makers in person and enjoy the benefits of sampling hundreds of wines throughout the day. Doing ‘side by side’ tastings with your friends and family is a highly recommended way to refine your palette and help confirm your favourite grape variety and vineyard.

Another new feature this year is the Mumm Champagne Lawn, where bubbles is the order of the day, while any non-wine drinkers can escape to the all-new Peroni Beer Garden. Also returning after a break will be the Charity Auction, which aims to raise $30,000-plus for Christchurch City Mission.

“The Christchurch South Island Wine & Food Festival is by far the most professionally organised and innovative event of its kind I have attended as an exhibitor,” says Edward Donaldson – Marketing Manager Pegasus Bay.

“The quality and diversity of wineries and food vendors is exceptional, as is the high standard of innovative seminars and outstanding entertainment. The festival attracts a diverse

demographic of food and wine lovers and has, without doubt, set a new standard.”

As an annual ‘must do’ in Canterbury’s festival calendar, the South Island Wine & Food Festival also delivers a comprehensive programme of educational and entertaining wine and food-related seminars, including demonstrations from high-profile chefs in a dedicated Cooking Theatre.

Well known for its live entertainment, this year’s festival line-up features Drax Project, Hollie Smith, Lou’ Ana, Katie Thompson, Amiria Grennel, Craig Shaw, John Ussher, and Dan Veitch.

Festival director Callam Mitchell says he’s very proud personally that the festival has evolved into one that appeals to such a wide range of people, with 18–34-year-olds making up 20 per cent of ticket sales, those aged 35–44 being 32 per cent, the 45–54 year age group 28 per cent, while last year those aged 55-plus comprised a healthy 19 per cent of attendees.

“As anyone who’s previously come along will tell you, it’s a fantastic crowd with a truly great vibe. Almost everyone is up dancing by the end of the day.”

While ‘Wine Connoisseur’ tickets have already sold out, GA tickets for $54.90 are still available, as well as a limited number of ‘VIP Experience’ tickets ranging from $299 a ticket to reserved seating for tables of up to ten people. VIPs enjoy exclusive access to complimentary food from a local restaurant, complimentary beverages, plus a premium view of the main music stage.

The South Island Wine & Food Festival is operated by Team Event – famous for also delivering some of the city’s most professionally operated events each year, including Nostalgia Festival and the Great Kiwi Beer Festival. Team Event is the name behind the wildly successful Electric Avenue music festival, which has evolved over the past nine years into what will, in 2025, become the biggest party in Australasia over two days in Hagley Park.

MIGRATING SOUTH

From the sun-soaked shores of Waiheke Island to the dramatic peaks of Marlborough and Bannockburn, Swiftsure is a bold new collection from the makers of Man O’ War.

Waiheke Island’s unique conditions have long shaped the distinctive character of Man O’ War wines. Now, the Man O’ War team have set their sights on the distinct landscapes in the South. With family-owned vineyards planted on sub-alpine hillsides and rocky river terraces in Marlborough and Bannockburn, Swiftsure Vineyards draws inspiration from the ruggedly beautiful South Island.

For winemaker Duncan McTavish, the expansion feels like a natural evolution and the perfect contrast to the Man O’ War collection. No stranger to challenging conditions, he is excited about the possibilities to come with the new South Island offering. A vision shared by viticulturist Sam Taylor, who has embraced the venture south wholeheartedly, relocating with his family from Waiheke Island to lead the vineyard operations in the iconic Marlborough region, while continuing to keep a guiding eye over Man O’ War.

For those who chase adventure and embrace epic journeys, Swiftsure offers

a gateway to awe-inspiring Southern landscapes. Their wines, crafted with purity and power, embody the same ethos as Man O’ War, producing bold and expressive styles that are a true reflection of their place.

Swiftsure Vineyards will be making their South Island debut at the South Island Wine and Food Festival on 7 December. They’ll be sampling their vibrant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, featuring notes of tropical fruits, crisp citrus, punchy jalapeno, and fresh herbs – showcasing the intensity that has made Marlborough famous. In addition, they will introduce their Bannockburn Single Vineyard Pinot Noir, hand-picked and bursting with a powerful aromatic profile of boysenberry, rhubarb, cherry blossom, and smoky undertones, with a unique umami finish.

Just as Man O’ War’s Restaurant and Tasting Room has become a renowned escape on Waiheke Island, Swiftsure plans to create its own haven in the South. A vibrant new restaurant is scheduled to open in Arrowtown early next year, bringing the spirit of Swiftsure to life.

ROLLICIOUS

Nestled in North Canterbury, Dancing Water’s winemaking philosophy is simple: to craft beautiful wine. Beautiful has been the winery’s favourite adjective and objective since they began producing wine in 1981. Owner Kim Schofield has passionately worked to restore, protect, and enhance this unique vineyard, which boasts some of New Zealand’s oldest living Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines. As one of the few Scheurebe vineyards in the southern hemisphere, Dancing Water was named among the top 12 Scheurebe wines globally by the renowned Italian wine and food magazine Civiltà del bere. They’ve also built a reputation for crafting beautiful rosé, releasing what may be the only Scheurebe Rosé in the world – and quite possibly the best you’ll taste all summer. dww.co.nz

ON THE JOB

New ownership, same community

Christchurch-based printing company Blueprint has recently bought packaging firm Pakworld, and the new owner is excited for the future.

Ensconced at the base of the Port Hills, Hillsborough-based Pakworld was founded in 1924. It specialises in product packaging and printing, working with brands that many Kiwis will be familiar with, from the ones found on the supermarket shelf to the burger joint.

When new owner Michael Lightbourne bought the business this month, he was committed to maintaining the sense of community within the company and setting it on the track to success.

Michael says he is excited to take on the 100-year-old, family-founded business.

“It’s a great company. It’s got great bones. Consumer packaging is a growth area, so this plant has great potential.”

Printing and packaging make sense to Michael. He has over 30 years of experience in this world and is also the owner of Blueprint, a specialist Christchurch-based printer.

Michael mentions Pakworld’s family values, something that has kept staff turnover low – a hallmark of Michael’s business, Blueprint.

“We want to create an environment where people enjoy their work.”

This is something production manager Chris Inglis echoes, saying that Michael has already displayed genuine, caring leadership.

“Now that Michael has taken over, it feels like a family again. He gives me the sense that we’re all on the same page and trusts us to do what we do best.”

Michael doesn’t see his role as dictating how things work, but rather as strengthening the already “very capable team”.

“The people here are craftspeople. They know what they’re doing, and they’re really experienced. Some of our employees have

been with Pakworld for 35 years, and some are second generation, like Amber, who followed in the footsteps of her mother.”

Michael mentions that Pakworld is set up well for the future focusing on sustainability and providing clients with packaging that meets modern consumer demands – and it has the credentials to back this up.

“We’re FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accredited. We do have an environmental bent to what we do, and it’s important. Most of what we produce is recyclable.”

The FSC is an international, nongovernmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.

Michael says that, unlike some other packaging printing specialists in the market, they’re committed to staying local.

“We’re locally owned and operated, and we produce 100 per cent locally. That makes us special.”

This is reinforced by a passion to bring local young people into the trade and train them in what is definitely a craft, with Pakworld currently bringing through two apprentices.

Chris started as an apprentice himself and values the opportunity that provided to him, and he’s passionate about making sure others have the same chances.

“The reason I love this job so much is seeing apprentices come through, and I want to see them succeed. Pakworld is my soul,” says Chris.

For Michael and the team, it’s back to business. The aim is to combine Blueprint and Pakworld under one roof in January 2025, while maintaining the individual names, meaning they will be able to print “almost anything”.

TRADES TRAINING OPENS DOORS WITHOUT DEBT

Having recently completed her New Zealand Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Theory and Practice Trade) Level 4 through EarnLearn, Larraine Lemafa is now putting her skills to good use as an electrician with an Auckland engineering firm.

“I decided to go with a trade because you get to make money while you learn, and you come out with life skills and a certificate at the end of it.”

“There’s not much to lose by giving an apprenticeship a try. You earn money while you learn, which is a big perk, and the block courses are great. The tutors we had were really helpful and have been there to support us along the way.”

Larraine’s views are backed up by her twin sister Brooke – also a recently qualified electrician with the same company, working alongside Larraine.

After leaving school, both twins worked in supermarkets but wanted more without taking on a student loan.

“[In this job], we get to learn something new every day. The type of work here is so

wide; it means constant learning and it’s really opened my eyes to all the different aspects of electrical you can do,” Brooke says.

“Making money while you learn is a big win-win,” she adds. “We are developing all these skills and getting knowledge while getting paid to do it. We don’t have to struggle to pay the bills or find part-time work while we study because our work is our learning.”

And it’s not just young people leaving school who are drawn to the benefits of trade training and earning while you learn.

After almost 30 years as a dental technician, Leila Brewerton is retraining through EarnLearn as a plumber, drainlayer, and gasfitter.

“After you get qualified, there are so many different ways you can go...certification, bathroom and kitchen layouts, or pipe outs and water cylinder installations. That’s the beauty of the whole industry.”

Leila says she has had great support from EarnLearn through her training. “You can definitely get the help you need when you need it. Sign up to a pre-trade and give it a crack.”

Everything has its season

Ilove the change of seasons. I’m also aware – and now understand – that everything about life and wellbeing has its season. The beautiful saying that ‘there is a time for every season under heaven’ is entirely true, regardless of your belief systems. You cannot do everything at once, and sometimes the best things take time, despite the fact that many of us have short attention spans, favour instant gratification, and never want to wait for anything. But nature forces us to do just that, and so this time of year is a perfect opportunity to pause for a moment and take stock of everything that’s happening.

I always think spring, with its sense of renewal and rejuvenation, is a welcome friend after the harsh realities of a lengthy winter, and it’s true that Christchurch welcomes spring like no other region.

In fact, fairly soon, we will run into the celebratory part of our city’s cultural calendar, and longer days only help this lighter, more uplifted part of the year.

In my business, spring has always heralded an onslaught of activity. Everyone wants to be on the market in the belief that their home can’t possibly look any better than it does in spring – which is often true!

But the flip side is there’s enormous competition, especially now.

The current real estate market has large numbers of people deciding to sell, and for the first time in some 20 years, I’m seeing our sales boards with more listings than sales.

And given the sales numbers are huge, it really is an incredible sight.

So, if you’re coming on the market now, here are some potential considerations.

How will you sell? I’ve got a beautiful insight to share with you.

Auction can make an enormous difference. Yes, it involves an unconditional transaction, which means all those conditional purchasers must wait, but when it goes well, it’s magic.

During October, one of our own properties went to auction. This was our 20th auction, and rather than it playing out as our other auctions have, with no buyers or one only (so limited competition), this time we had a frenzy of bidding.

For the first time ever, I experienced what many clients I’ve worked with have experienced, and that’s an exciting auction day with multiple bidders and a premium price achieved. The elation at the result and the gratitude for the professionals we worked with consolidated our resolve that auction should always be considered.

Presentation. Get experts in, and I say this not because I own a staging company, but because buyers have big expectations, and most of us struggle to live up to this without a helping hand. So, get help or at least advice as to what looks great.

Finally, work with the best people, and I leave the evaluation of that to each of you, because if everything has its own season, then let this be yours.

MAKING HEATING AND COOLING SIMPLE

Mick Kain’s approach to heating systems is focused on giving customers everything they need to make the best decision for their home.

It all starts with understanding what system is right for them.

“If someone comes in asking for a heating system, we ask them: Do you prefer a wood fire, gas fire, heat pump, or a ducted heat pump? Then we discuss the pros and cons of each option,” Mick explains.

He adds that ducted heat pump systems have become a popular, go-to option.

Like traditional heat pumps, ducted systems offer energy efficiency and convenience in providing both heating and cooling. However, ducted heat pumps take advantage of a home’s architecture to provide heating and cooling to every room.

These systems use a central unit that connects to all rooms through insulated ducts, distributing air via vents.

One major advantage is that they eliminate the need for separate units in each room.

The central unit can be discreetly installed in ceilings or under floors, preserving both space and aesthetics. This design provides consistent temperatures throughout the home, enhancing comfort. Additionally, since the unit can be installed in the ceiling space, ducted heat pumps operate quietly and unobtrusively.

Due to this rising popularity, Mick says they have made it a priority to upskill their team on ducted systems.

“We’ve upskilled our team in what we offer on the ducted side because it’s becoming almost a default system. We encourage people to consider it. By upskilling, we now have a dedicated engineering design expert who custom-designs every installation. That’s

one of the most important things – it needs to be engineered and designed correctly. We also have a full-time contracts and quality manager who ensures every system we install meets our high-quality standards. On the sales side, we have a team that works with each customer, whether they’re collaborating with builders, architects, or the homeowners themselves, to ensure they’re getting exactly what they need. Different configurations can have a big impact not only on performance but also on cost.”

Mick also mentions that a ducted heat pump’s strength is its ability to work in conjunction with other systems, like a wood burner.

“This is something people love because they complement each other incredibly well,” he says.

“With a wood burner and a ducted heat pump, we integrate the additional heat source into the ducted system. When you light your fire, the substantial heat it generates can be dispersed throughout the house by switching the heat pump to fan mode, creating a different, yet comforting warmth.”

At Simply Heat’s showroom on 95 Byron Street, customers can see a fully operational ducted heat pump system in situ, along with various vent displays, alongside fireplaces, and other heating and cooling solutions.

Mick acknowledges that not everyone has time to visit the showroom or may not be ready to start a conversation. For that reason, they’ve recently launched a Buyer’s Guide for ducted heat pumps on their website.

“This guide is for customers who aren’t quite ready to meet with us or have a phone call but want to explore the relevant aspects of ducted heat pumps. It’s a great starting point.”

Mick invites anyone looking for a heating or cooling solution to visit their website or stop by the showroom.

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN WITH A HERITAGE VIEW

This new hotel, designed by Gravitas Consulting Ltd, offers a welcoming space that embraces the city’s heritage while looking towards a vibrant future.

In the heart of Ōtautahi, an exciting new hotel has emerged on Kilmore Street, strategically located opposite the iconic Christchurch Town Hall. This ambitious project, designed by architecture and design management firm Gravitas Consulting Ltd, not only enhances the skyline but also serves as a catalyst for urban revitalisation in this part of the city. With its modern design and thoughtful amenities, the Quest Apartment Hotel is poised to become an excellent destination for both local and international visitors.

Director James McCondach and Associate Architect Murine Lai reflect on the vision for the hotel, noting, “Placement for a hotel directly across from the Christchurch Town Hall made perfect sense, giving back the venue’s importance to the city and its people. It is an internationally acclaimed iconic landmark that

attracts numerous events each year, ensuring a steady influx of entertainment. This brings social engagement back to the central city of Christchurch.” The hotel boasts 43 thoughtfully designed rooms, with options for interconnecting family suites, ensuring comfort for all types of travellers.

At three storeys high, the hotel presents a contemporary aesthetic that is fully cognisant of its location and history. “We aimed to create a structure that not only complements the Town Hall but also enriches the area with a dynamic presence. The design takes consideration of a blend of materials; the feature is an angled precast concrete facade that frames the entrance, creating an inviting focal point with human-scale aspect.”

The Gravitas team worked within the strict financial parameters for the client. “It forced

us to innovate,” Murine explains. “We used a mix of precast concrete and aluminium composite panels, which allowed us to achieve a striking visual impact without compromising on quality.” The attention to detail through materiality ensures that the hotel maintains a modern yet durable presence amid the historic acclaimed architecture of the area.

The allure of this hotel extends beyond its design. Nestled just 200m from Te Pae Convention Centre, and 500m from Cathedral Square, it positions guests at the epicentre of the city’s pulse. With Hagley Park and the future stadium nearby, this space promises year-round excitement, drawing crowds for events, festivals, and concerts. “We wanted to ensure that the guests could easily access the beauty and vibrancy of the city, making their stay not

just about accommodation but also about experiencing the city and all its offerings.”

The common areas of the hotel, lift entranceways, and stair shafts have views overlooking the Town Hall, providing a picturesque backdrop for guests to savour. “It’s quite spectacular at night, with the lighting, too. And we also designed rooms on the ground floor, so they are easily accessible for those with physical impairments.”

The journey to completion was not without its trials. The Covid pandemic forced the design team to adapt to new ways of collaborating. “Designing during a pandemic was a unique experience,” Murine recalls. “We adapted to remote collaborations, which sometimes made communication a challenge, but ultimately led to innovative solutions.”

The site, at just 27.9m wide, meant the Gravitas team had to think carefully about

the positioning of the rooms and maximising what space was available, particularly incorporating car access down each side of the building. “The vehicle lanes took four metres off our available space on either side, so it was a great challenge to make it all fit!”

A notable feature of the hotel is its soundproofing design, ensuring guests enjoy a peaceful environment among the urban buzz. “We meticulously designed the internal structures to prevent noise and fire transfer. Basically, the interiors have headboards encasing all the services.”

In partnership with Miles Construction, Beattie Air completed the installation of mechanical services. It installed Mitsubishi Hot Water Heat Pumps (HWHP) and Hybrid VRF (HVRF) systems, ensuring efficient

heating and cooling throughout the building. Beattie Air also installed air conditioning systems across all areas, fresh air fans, and seismic supports for mechanical equipment. Delivered on time and within budget, Beattie Air was also awarded the ongoing maintenance contract for the building.

The completion of this hotel, opened in July, marks a significant step in the ongoing revitalisation of the city. With plans for more medium-density developments in the vicinity, including office and retail spaces, the project promises to breathe new life into a previously relatively underutilised area. Murine concludes, “Our goal was to contribute positively to the urban landscape, and we believe this hotel will play a resounding role in that transformation.”

What would Nigella do?

While most people turn to old episodes of Friends or Gilmore Girls for comfort and nostalgia, I find myself diving into the treasure troves of ’90s Nigella Bites. With a perfectly coiffed blowout, crimson cheeks and manicured nails, Nigella always exudes a sense of togetherness.

That is until she gleefully dives head-first into the chaos of her kitchen. She rips apart a roast chook like it’s a biblical baguette, spills spaghetti across the counter without a second thought, and delves into the depths of her deep freeze to see what forgotten deliciousness she can unveil. This woman celebrates indulgence, beating a bounty of butter through her Béarnaise, blissfully unaware of the dairy price hikes looming just 20-odd years into the future.

So when I lean into the depths of my fridge, discovering not much more than a nearempty jar of marmalade, I find myself asking: WWND? (What would Nigella do?) Nigella would surely revel in the zesty brightness of new-season citrus. Whether it’s baked into a

case solitude is off the table. This sweet moment when the house is still in slumber and you find the golden remnants clinging to the sides of the glass jar. Not quite enough for your toast, but to simply rinse and recycle would be blasphemy after all the effort you put into channelling your inner Nigella making this marmalade.

Start by slicing a fruity sourdough loaf. My favourites are the Apricot and Walnut from the Mediterranean Food Company and the Fig, Fennel, and Walnut from Grizzly. Cut a slice almost too thick for your toaster and drop it in while we prepare the drink.

Into your marmalade jar, add a slosh of tequila, a teaspoon of warmed honey, and a good squeeze of lime juice. Toss in a handful of ice cubes, pop the lid back on, and shake! Just be sure to close any doors so as not to wake the household. You don’t want them interrupting this delicious moment. Taste and adjust, but don’t bother with a fancy glass, your jar will do just fine. You don’t want to have to explain why the

THE OFFICE CAFÉ / OLD SCHOOL COLLECTIVE

1429 Main North Road, Waikuku | osc.nz

Set on the grounds of the old Waikuku Primary School, the Old School Collective is a charming cluster of shops offering everything from a hairdresser and clothing to homewares, kitchen goods, and lots more. You can even book your pooch in for a groom while you head to The Office Café to enjoy lunch. Aptly positioned in the former school office, The Office Café cabinet is full to the brim with fresh salads, pies, cakes, and slices. With a brunch and lunch menu boasting the classics and more, my pick was the Office Bowl. A brown rice, slaw, avo, and egg bowl with housesmoked salmon! Delicious! Sit in the sundappled courtyard, with hopscotch underfoot and a drinking fountain in the corner, bringing a sense of nostalgic schoolyard charm. But don’t worry; despite the primary school setting, a glass of rosé in the sunshine won’t get you sent to the principal’s office!

LET THE BUTCHER TAKE CARE OF IT

Next door to Christchurch’s institution, Peter Timbs Meats, in the Edgeware village, you’ll find The Butcher’s Kitchen.

We all know how busy life can be, and that’s where The Butcher’s Kitchen comes in, with its range of pick-up-and-go snacks or ready-to-eat home-cooked meals.

When you’re on the move, their cabinet is brimming with tasty treats like the ever-popular jalapeño and cheese pies, or what should arguably be our national dish: Marmite and cheese sausage rolls. Craving more? They’ve got you covered with hearty steak and Guinness pies, traditional pork pies, and other savoury delights.

If it’s an on-the-go meal you’re after, takeaway hot meals include Tandoori chicken on scalloped potatoes, slow-cooked lamb oyster shoulders, and pork fillets wrapped in bacon. If you’re not ready to eat right then, they have plenty of products that you can just whip in the oven or store in the freezer until

you need them. From traditional lasagne and beef brisket lasagne to fish pies, Eccles cakes, sticky date puddings, cheesecakes, and other sweet treats, you’ll be sorted.

To round out a meal, vegetables certainly haven’t been forgotten at The Butcher’s Kitchen, with a range of seasonal take-home salads also available.

With the summer party season approaching, this is the place to head to wow your guests. Or maybe you’ve been running around all day after the kids, and you just need something to make dinner or lunch a little easier – let the butcher take care of it. And if it’s meat for the barbecue you need, just stop by Peter Timbs Meats next door for professionally butchered cuts and speciality meats.

You’ll find The Butcher’s Kitchen at 72b Edgeware Road; if you’re not already following your nose, just look out for the neon lights. They’re open from 10am–6pm Monday to Friday and 10am–5pm on Saturday.

NEW BRIGHTON Joe (Dark Ballad)

“It’s my own obsessed brain. I’ve got a to-do list of what I want to do in a week, but there’s 50 things on each day that obviously can’t all be done. Because I’m always thinking about these things, the moment is not really lived in at all.

“I was always pretty neurotic like that, always a planner, even when I didn’t have any set goals like I do now. I didn’t like school or my first couple of jobs, so I quit all that and went to art school, which helped me channel this unfocused ambition.

“I’m Ngāi Tahu. Most of my family can speak Māori. They’re more immersed in the culture, whereas I never grew up learning much about it. Now, I love putting it into my art, especially words, and incorporating them into my work; I haven’t really had an outlet until now.

“I’ve worked at a couple of community art organisations. I currently work at The White Room, an art space for intellectually disabled artists and other groups. I have been in that field for over six years and have run multiple different art groups, including Māori art groups, a printmaking club, and sessions for

rangitahi. I really love helping people through art and teaching.

“The beauty of printmaking is you’ve got this piece of wood you’ve carved and inked up that you can use to make prints, shirts, stickers, paste-ups. The versatility of print mediums is what drew me to it and what led to the majority of opportunities I’ve had: collabing with all sorts of artists, exhibitions, and street art events. I’ve always liked the idea of having something that took weeks to carve and print, but seconds to slap up on a wall or a shirt as many times as you want. The same idea applies to stencils as well. I really like the spamming and repetition of street art; printmaking lends itself well to that.

“Now we’ve got a studio, me and Klaudia. It’s really nice to have a partner I have so much in common with. She’ll push me into being a better technical artist. I’ll push her into getting herself and her work into the world. I’ve always been quite assertive when it comes to getting my stuff seen and included in areas and communities that I’m keen to be involved in.”
