Dearest Conscious Life Friends Hello!!Are you well? Are you keeping warm in this cold weather? We hope so.

her and spend time with her. I know in my heart that she is going to pull through this and come out on top.

Just a short letter from me this month…

We shouldn’t only make time for our loved ones in times of need, we should always make time for them. I have been spending more time and speaking with the other people that I love, and it has really fed my soul.

I have been thinking over the past while about the relationships in our lives and how we often take those close to us, for granted. We are endlessly told how we should cherish the ones we love, spend time with them, show them know how much we love and appreciate them. And do we do so? For many, the answer to this is likely: not as much as we would like… We get busy with life and the day to day challenges and before we look again, months have passed since we last spent quality time with those outside of our immediate circle. We mean to get together for that coffee, that braai, movie or chit chat and somehow we don’t do so. I too am guilty of this. Sometimes we don’t even make time for those we share our everyday life with. Today is the birthday of my late brother, Vincent. He would have been 33. We lost him in a car accident shortly after his 26th birthday. What I would do for just one cup of coffee and a chit chat with him. If I could travel back in time I would prioritise spending time with him. Even with this painful lesson, have I learnt? Not fully, I still find myself getting busy with life and not seeing or speaking to those close to me as often as I would like. A close family member has been in hospital this last month to remove cancer, which was recently diagnosed. I made the decision as soon as she shared the diagnosis, that I would be there for

I was reminded of over the past two months that people we love may not always be in our lives, for whatever reason, whether they pass away or drift away. That what they say is true: we should take the time today to cherish them, tell them how we feel about them, show them how much they are loved by us, as we never know how long we have with them. So I invite you to pick up the phone, and make plans to see your loved ones. Make space in your busy lives for the people you love. Start today with arranging your time so that you create a healthy balance between work, home responsibilities, self care, mind-body-soul, and family and friends. It will give you great happiness and fulfillment. Do it now while you still have the opportunity available to you. I shall leave you with that thought, and a lovely July issue jam packed as always with great articles to help you live a better and more balanced life. In dedication to my brother, and those I love who are no longer in my life. You are loved!

By Margi McAlpine We sit and weep as we see the destruction of so many innocent people carried out so indiscriminately to induce the feeling of fear and helplessness in all who witness it, see it or are affected by it. The burning and destroying of buildings, vehicles and land makes no sense and because it makes no sense and is so vicious it brings in feelings of not being in control and absolute powerlessness.

Fear takes you into a space where you feel you have no control over anything and hands your personal power over to those that are committing the cowardly deeds which of course is exactly what they want. Fear is the most destructive and debilitating of emotions. It makes you feel as though you are helpless and cannot stand in your power and that you are not worth anything as you are crushed by the overwhelming fear and sadness that you experience. With the fear comes anger which creeps up on you because of the feeling that you are helpless and so vulnerable. This is when we need to hold the light and not be sucked into this vortex of negativity and helplessness that creeps up on us. Call on Archangel Uriel and his Angels of Peace and Harmony and command them to assist in the areas where the violence is occurring. It does and will make a difference and because you are doing something positive your fear is assuaged.

It’s winter. Your skin is so dry you can almost feel it crackle on your face. Your elbows are rough as rusks, the dried out, crinkled palms of your hands cry out for moisture. Most people think dry skin is simply a cosmetic problem solved by frequent application of moisturisers. However, if we take a holistic approach to dry skin, it’s clear there’s a lot more to treating dry skin than just from the outside. Having said that, what you put on your skin is extremely important but we’ll get to that in a minute.

To make matters worse, commercial soaps are made with highly alkaline detergents (the pH of average soaps is between 9 and 12) as well as surfactants (for foaming) which remove oil based dirt. Well, that’s great for the dishes, but not so much for your skin’s natural oils. Use natural, moisturising soaps instead.

Drying Your Skin with a Long Hot Shower Did you know your skin has a protective ‘acid mantle’ of pH 4.2 - 5.5 which keeps it healthy and hydrated? Your skin’s first level of defence is its acidity and you don’t want to lose that. This means that ironically, even water, which has a neutral pH of 7 is more alkaline than skin and is the reason a prolonged hot shower will strip the skin of its natural oils, leaving it dehydrated. Another good reason to keep showers short in these times of drought! Conscious Life Magazine

What to Eat To Beat Dry Skin Your skin needs these 5 key nutrients which will keep your skin nourished and hydrated: Omega 3: A deficiency in omega 3 shows up as - yes, you guessed it - dry skin! Salmon and other fatty fish like tuna, herring and trout as well as flax seeds are rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acids which helps to retain moisture and strengthen the skin barrier. Silica: is found in water-rich vegetables such as cucumbers and celery both of which give a boost to increasing your skin’s hydration leading to increased elasticity.

Vitamin E: Nuts, avocado and olive oil are all rich in vitamin E, which has long been known to be especially beneficial to skin health. Vitamin E protects the skin from oxidative cell damage and protects the skin barrier. Vitamin A: Sweet potatoes, pumpkins, carrots and winter squash are beta-carotene-rich vegetables which also have an abundance of vitamin A, one of the most important nutrients for preventing dry skin as it helps lock in moisture. Water & Water rich foods: Skin needs moisture to stay flexible. Even mild dehydration will cause your skin to look dry, tired and slightly grey. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day and don't forget that some fruit and vegetables, such as watermelon, celery, courgette and cucumber, also contribute fluids – the added benefit is that the minerals they contain will increase the rate you hydrate your body and skin.

What to feed your skin There’s evidence that certain chemicals can be absorbed into your body via the skin. Intuitively, we sense it can be seen metaphorically as a digestive organ (why else would we talk about nourishing the skin?) Conscious Life Magazine

which is why it’s essential to choose carefully when it comes to what you put on your skin. The best moisturisers for your skin therefore, are natural plant-based oils which are free of chemical fragrances, toxic preservatives and artificial colourants and additives. Plus, the nutrients in these oils actually encourage cell-regeneration and won’t clog pores. Nourish your skin with these top hydrating skin foods especially good for combating dryness: Baobab Oil A highly sought after ingredient in the cosmetic world, this rich amber-gold oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the baobab fruit pod. It’s a rare, naturally light oil which doesn’t clog pores and absorbs rapidly without leaving a greasy residue. Baobab oil has a unique fatty acid profile with exceptional quantities of Omega 6 and 9, helping to retain moisture and regenerate new skin cells. Argan Oil This oil contains high levels of vitamin E and anti-inflammatory fatty acids, and because its antioxidants won't break down in sunlight, it’s a good choice for daytime wear. Made from kernels in the nuts of argan fruit, it's been popular in Morocco for hundreds of years, and is excellent for treating dry, flaky skin.

Jojoba Oil This light oil absorbs easily and is actually a liquid wax and mimics the skin’s sebum; extremely effective for rejuvenating dry skin. Shea Butter This rich healing moisturiser is packed with oils, vitamins, plant sterols and minerals, working to deeply moisturise and add a natural glow to your skin. For best results, apply oil to your skin immediately after bathing. Pat your skin dry with a towel, but allow some moisture to remain on the surface. Apply oil generously, trapping moisture in and preventing your skin from drying out too quickly. Following these steps will banish dry skin. You’ll have soft, dewy luscious skin, even in the middle of winter.

While many people may find themselves succumbing to the common cold and other respiratory illnesses that are so prevalent in the winter, there are several things you can do (and not do) to help keep yourself in top form. Some may not even seem to be an important part of staying healthy, but they are. When it comes to averting sickness, even while all around you people might be coughing, sneezing and blowing their noses, successfully running the gauntlet of flu season may be simply a matter of keeping your immune system boosted by applying a few key health strategies. Besides going to school and work, times your immune system might be especially compromised include when you travel or are sleep deprived or stressed out. These are times you want to make sure your immune system is at its best. Nutrition may be the most vital component in maintaining — or gaining — a healthy immune system. It makes all the difference in the way your body fights off germs, but just as importantly, plays an important role in more minute functions like helping tissues repair and rebuild themselves and how your body reclaims flagging energy. Conscious Life Magazine

Foods (and the Nutrients Therein) to Boost Your Immune System Not just vitamins and minerals, but proteins like collagen and free radical-fighting antioxidants can be introduced to your body through the foods you eat, and play vital roles in helping to keep your body functioning at its best. As the Chicago Tribune observes: “Collagen and its amino acids are essential to healing because they build tissues such as skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels, bones and more. Antioxidants remove the harmful free radicals from the bloodstream that can impair the immune system, and vitamins and minerals play specialized roles in healing.”1 In the same way that cross training can keep your body fit and toned by working groups of different muscles, eating a variety of foods will target and work toward healing and restoring many different areas of your body, from your brain to your gut to your immune system. Protein found in lean meats, bone broth, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds help your body repair tissue and fight infection. Studies show that amino acids in protein, such as arginine and glutamine, increase your body’s ability to heal and decrease inflammation.2 In addition, the high antioxidant levels in chaga tea may also help boost your immune function. Chaga mushrooms are chockful with antioxidants and Beta-d-Glucans, which are compounds that increase macrophage and killer cell efficiency.

Vitamins and Minerals to the Immune System Rescue Eating foods chock-full of vitamins is an excellent way to strengthen your immune system to stay healthy all season: • Vitamin A boosts immunity, lowers your risk of infection and supports wound

healing through collagen strength. Snack on carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, dark leafy greens, cantaloupe, wild-caught Alaskan salmon, organic pastured eggs and grass fed beef. Vitamin D plays a big part in immune health and can be found in limited quantities in raw grass fed milk, wildcaught Alaskan salmon and organic pastured eggs, but the ideal way to optimize your levels is via sunshine Some of the most vitamin C-rich foods include citrus fruits, from tangerines to limes, along with leafy greens, bell peppers and broccoli. Berries are another great source, and they all provide this and other potent antioxidants, which support your immune response and help to rebuild collagen.

Vitamin K1, important for healthy blood clotting, is abundant in dark leafy green vegetables. Vitamin K2 refers to a collection of bacterial menaquinones (MKs) that are found in a variety of different foods, namely animal foods and fermented foods. MK-4 is most abundant in animal foods while you can find MK-7, MK-8 and MK-9 in fermented foods. Important for collagen production, zinc is another protective antioxidant that helps create and activate your immune system’s white blood cells and is essential in the enzymatic reactions needed for wound healing. Zinc-containing foods include grass fed red meat (optimal amounts per day range from 5 to 7 ounces), pastured, organic chicken, spinach, nuts and pumpkin seeds.

Selenium is another powerful antioxidant for immune system protection, found in Brazil nuts and organic, grass fed beef, turkey and chicken. In addition, as important as any food you eat, drinking adequate water is vital for flushing food through your system, flushing toxins and keeping your body hydrated. Many turn to so-called “sports drinks” for hydrating Conscious Life Magazine

while working out, but clear, pure water is the ideal beverage.

Immune-Strengthening ‘B’ Is for Boost

Vitamins:

B vitamins may constitute a long list, but each one is important for different reasons. Other “B’s” for boosting your immunity are especially effective when you combine the foods containing them so they can all work together for maximum effect. These include vitamin B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid) and B7 (biotin). B12, also known as cobalamin, is a powerful cold- and flu-fighting nutrient in your system, as is vitamin B6, another important, germcombating vitamin that naturally benefits and strengthens your immune system and even protects against the damaging effects of air pollution.

Vitamin B9 and folic acid help repair tissues and aid in cell metabolism and immune support. They’re found in dark leafy greens, wild-caught, cold water fish like herring, mackerel, sardines, anchovies and wild-caught Alaskan salmon, and pastured, organic chicken. Nutritional yeast and other foods fortified with B12 present one way vegetarians (or anyone else, for that matter) can augment their B12 intake through their diet. Raw, organic grass fed milk, yogurt and cheese are additional options with naturally high B12 content.

Optimizing Your Gut Health With Probiotics The health benefits derived from probiotics are rooted in balancing your intestinal bacteria. One of the easiest and quickest ways to do that is by eating fermented vegetables, which have long been a mainstay in many ancient cultures. However, it’s only been in recent decades that this method of optimizing gut health has reemerged.

The traditional method for preparing fermented vegetables is very much like it was thousands of years ago. Fermenting helps introduce friendly bacteria to your system and is one of the best ways to optimize your immune system, about 80 percent of which resides in your gastrointestinal tract. It’s not an overstatement to say it’s a key line of defense against pathogens, as well as an aid in the production of antibodies. Aside from fermented vegetables, one of the most healthful fermented foods is kefir, an enzyme-rich food full of friendly microorganisms that help balance your microbiome as well as strengthen your immune defenses. Other beneficial fermented foods include natto, kimchi, pickles, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh and raw grass fed yogurt, but make sure you watch out for added sugar in most commercial varieties. The fact that including probiotics in your diet has been shown to reduce incidences of psoriasis, colitis, allergies and many other diseases and conditions is a testament to their effectiveness in protecting your immune system. In addition, pregnant women who take probiotics help reduce their child’s risk of developing allergies.3

Fiber to Optimize Digestion and ‘Up’ Your Immunity Not only does fiber help balance your gut microbiome, it, too, helps improve your immune system, as resistant starches act as prebiotics to feed healthy bacteria in your gut. As a result, it promotes bowel movements and keeps waste moving smoothly through your colon, while at the same time benefiting your heart health and controlling your blood sugar. There are two types of fiber: soluble, which easily dissolves in water and becomes gel-like, and insoluble, which doesn’t dissolve but stays basically intact as it moves through your Conscious Life Magazine

Conscious Life Magazine

colon; both types are important for digestion. Eating a fiber-rich diet, which in turn may improve the microbial diversity in your gut, may be linked to better responses during immunotherapy cancer treatment.4 In fact, your gut microbiome more directly influences your health and disease than previously thought. The fact is, your diet can make or break not just the ecosystem in which your gut bacteria reside, but your mental health as well. And it’s not just the food you eat but all kinds of other factors, including the chemicals and pollution you’re exposed to, and all of it can alter the composition of gut bacteria and thereby influence your immune system health. As the Belfast Telegraph notes, “Want to avoid winter flu? Start eating with your gut in mind. Studies have found that having a healthy microbiome is important in fostering a strong immune system and keeping us healthy.”5

Getting Your Z’s: Not Optional for Optimal Immunity Sleep is something that kids may resist, but as adults start the “adulting” that comes with jobs, growing families and paying the mortgage, sleep is something that can all too often go by the wayside. Studies show that not getting the sleep you need — for most people eight hours is the minimum for functioning at your best — can compromise your health in ways you may not have considered. In fact, several nights in a row with less than restful, adequate sleep puts your body at greater risk for illness. Some of the ways lack of sleep manifests itself in disease include: • Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease • Diabetes, which is true even for children6 • Increased cardiovascular disease, especially for African-Americans7

Conscious Magazine Conscious Life Life Magazine

Higher incidence of depression and anxiety8 Increased risk of obesity

cane juice, just to name a few, and the sugar industry has been manipulating the data for decades for the purpose of increasing profits.

Another study notes that cutting just one hour of sleep a night increases the expression of genes associated with inflammation, immune excitability, diabetes, cancer risk and stress.9 Consistently sleeping less than six hours a night increases your risk for numerous psychological and physical effects. The upshot is, lack of sleep quickly decreases your immune function, leaving your system wideopen for environmental influences, including viruses like colds and flu, that you would feel much better off if you avoided.

To keep your immune system functioning at its best, one of the most effective strategies is to avoid sugar, pure and simple. It’s hard to do, though certainly doable, even if you know you’re suffering from a bad case of sweet tooth; research indicates that sugar impacts the function of dopamine in your brain, the neurotransmitter that triggers your reward system, in the same way narcotics affect your brain, and may trigger a strong addictive response.11

Sugar: Just As Bad for You Now as It Ever Was If you were looking for a food to eat that would compromise your health in numerous ways and absolutely ruin your health, sugar in its many forms — and there are several, thanks to ever-changing food manufacturing gimmicks and money-making strategies — would win the prize. Not only is sugar identified as a carcinogen,10 it’s also contributing to the ever-increasing rates of chronic disease in the U.S. and throughout the world. In the last century, sugar has become a daily habit that happens to coincide with increasing rates of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other chronic illnesses. One of the most insidious ways sugar works in your body is to damage both mitochondrial function and energy production, which triggers cell mutations that are then fed by continued sugar consumption. What’s amazing is the number of ways sugar can show up, depending on the labels, in the foods you buy at the grocery store, including fruit juices, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), evaporated cane juice, pancake syrup and

More Tips for Keeping Your Immune System in Tip-Top Shape Whether your body is in recovery mode or you want to stave off the bug-of-the-month that might be going around at work or school, there are a few more options to prepare your system to fight back. One way to pack vitamins, minerals and other powerful nutrients into your day is to pack your blender or food processor with the makings for a super smoothie, making use of ingredients like spinach and other dark, leafy greens, carrots, berries like raspberries and strawberries, and even pumpkin seeds and Brazil nuts. For a different (and more decadent) flavor, try going the chocolate route for your smoothie, but stick with dark chocolate with the lowest sugar content you can find for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects courtesy of beneficial compounds such as epicatechin and resveratrol, known for being neuroprotective. Cacao also benefits your brain, nervous system, heart and blood vessels while helping to combat diabetes and other inflammationrelated conditions. Eating locally grown foods that are in season is better nutritionally because foods that are Conscious Life Magazine

“in season” in winter include oranges, kiwifruit, cactus pear, dates, cherimoya, mandarins, red currants and passion fruit. Vegetables have their own season in which they grow best and offer the highest nutritional profile, and in winter this includes sweet potatoes, leeks, turnips, Brussels sprouts, kale, Belgian endive and winter squash varieties. Last, but certainly not least, keeping stress out of your life, at least to the highest degree possible, will go a long way toward preparing yourself to live disease- and even flu-free. As Rediff.com12 maintains, there are several ways you can help protect your immunity: • Avoid processed foods, as they make you vulnerable to developing chronic conditions • Avoid excessive alcohol, which can impede the functioning of immune cells • Avoid obesity, as it can affect the ability of white blood cells to multiply, produce antibodies and prevent inflammation • Include activity, especially if you know you’re not getting enough; as little as 20 minutes of walking five days a week can increase your immune system function • Avoid taking unnecessary medications, as even nonprescription drugs, antibiotics and cold and fever fighting medications may weaken your immune system Additionally: “Chronic stress can make you more susceptible to colds and the flu, as well as more serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes and other diseases. By practicing stress-reducing activities like yoga, meditation and laughter, you can keep your body from going into chronic stress mode.”13 Your health is under siege from every direction. Environmental toxins, ultra-processed foods, EMFs, government-subsidized GMOs and a host of other threats surround us. It is simply not possible to Conscious Life Magazine

protect yourself unless you are armed with cutting edge health information. The most complex tasks can be made easy if you just take one step at a time. Taken as a whole, this 30-tip plan makes for a comprehensive guide that can change your life. Just a few of the topics addressed are: • What to eat and when to eat it • Exercise strategies that you can implement today • The power of emotional health • Enhancing your health with essentials like air, sunshine and water • How to get the restorative sleep that your body requires It may seem that health and wellness are no longer the norm. An opioid epidemic sweeps the country, the obesity rate is skyrocketing, life expectancy is dropping and chronic diseases are rampant. Our communities are being damaged at every level and the only way to reverse these trends is through education and personal example. My 30-tip plan provides you with the tools you need to take control of your health. The time is ripe for revolution — a health revolution.

Article by Wendy Young of Wise Living

Vata, pitta and kapha move in the whole body producing good or ill effects upon the entire system according to their normal or provoked states. Their normal state is balanced (prakriti) and their abnormal state is imbalanced (vikriti).” In this article we conclude the series on Ayurveda by exploring the Kapha Dosha. Kapha is a combination of the earth and water elements and is the principle of growth and protection. It is the substance that provides our nourishment and makes up the bulk of the body’s structure, the bones, muscles, tissues and cells as well as the body fluids. It is responsible for supporting and holding the structures of the body together and also provides our emotional support in life. It gives rise to emotional calm and endurance and allows us to feel love, compassion, devotion, patience and forgiveness. It gives us a sense of well being. Its main site in the body is the stomach. It is also found in the chest, throat, head, pancreas, lymph, fat, nose and tongue. It relates to phlegm/mucus in the body and helps smelling and tasting.

Kapha types are grounded, emotionally and physically strong and resilient, placid, kind and thoughtful. They don’t like change or the unpredictable aspects of life and may have a tendency to be lazy, ‘couch potatoes’. Exerting themselves does often, not come naturally, although vigorous exercise can make them feel very good and healthy. Physically Kapha types have the biggest and strongest builds of all three types. They tend to have large bones, broad shoulders and big muscles and have a tendency to put on weight easily. Their hair is thick and lustrous, their eyes calm, large and moist, their lips are full and their teeth strong and even. They Conscious Life Magazine

sleep heavily and love to lie in the morning. Their skin is usually cool to the touch, they don’t tend to mind extremes of weather but their symptoms like colds and mucus congestion are often worse in cold, damp, winter weather.

According to this principle, we are nourished by the qualities that are not innate to our individual dosha. We should avoid the intake of things that are like our own qualities and increase the intake of things that are unlike our qualities.

If you have excess Kapha you may feel slow, heavy, lethargic and you will have a tendency to retain water and put on weight. Emotionally you may feel complacent, greedy, materialistic and possessive. There may be a tendency to be stubborn, obstinate and narrow minded. Excess Kapha can lead to stagnation in the tissues, cellulite, mucus congestion, breathing problems, sleepiness, low thyroid function, poor digestion and sluggish bowels.

Kapha dosha is a combination of earth and water elements and is therefore nourished by ether, air and fire. Kapha’s slow and methodical rhythms are balanced by qualities of stimulation and letting go.

The most important spiritual challenge for Kapha people is to overcome the tendency for inertia and complacency. Learning how to use their groundedness and their tendency for material life to support and sustain an active spiritual life is the culmination of this spiritual challenge.

TO RECAP • • • • • • • • • • • •

Large frame, heavy bones Big muscles Prone to overweight Thick oily skin and hair Large clear eyes Tendency to over sleep Slow, tend to be lazy and inactive Resistant to change Calm, forgiving and compassionate Slow to learn and slow to forget Symptoms worse in cold, damp weather Slow and methodical rhythms

Kapha is aggravated by sweet, sour and salty tastes (as they increase moisture), at the beginning of a meal, morning (6 – 10am) and evening (6 – 10pm), by greed and possessiveness, in winter, by a cold, heavy and wet natured diet, in childhood, from a damp and cold climate, sleeping in the day, lack of movement and laziness. Because like attracts like there is a natural tendency to be attracted to these! As Kapha is slow, damp and heavy it is aggravated by these tendencies. It is best balanced by their opposites – increase movement, activity, light diet, warm environment, less oils/fats, more dry foods and environments: • • • • • •

HOW TO NOURISH AND BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL RHYTHMS

The Ayurvedic principle of ‘like increases like’ helps us nourish our individual rhythms and achieve balance in our lives.

• •

Engage in stimulating physical exercise and yoga practice every day Embrace new and invigorating experiences Rise with the sun Eat wholesome, light, warm, pungent and stimulating foods Avoid cold, oily, rich and excessively sour or salty foods Drink hot water and spicy teas – chai, cinnamon, cardamom Protect yourself against cold, damp and wet environments More giving, sharing and letting go Stimulating and deep massage with drying oils – mustard seed Conscious Life Magazine

CONCLUSION An imbalance of the doshas is a sign of lack of health, vitality and enjoyment. Specifically, it manifests as a flow from one dosha to the next. Imbalance in Vata creates misunderstanding and misinterprets the situation, then moves to Pitta that criticizes and judges, then moves to Kapha to attach your own point of view and increase the strength of the ego. When all three qualities are most balanced, the result is optimal health on many levels:

• • •

Vata – relaxation of the body Pitta – fire in the belly Kapha – warm loving heart

Private Health Care for Emergency Treatment As South African’s, one of the biggest risks we face every day while commuting to and from work is vehicle accidents. What many people don’t know is that in 2015, the Road Traffic Management Corporation reported 832 431 road traffic crashes. 6% of these incidents were considered to be major or fatal accidents. This amounted to 278 620 people injured on our roads in that year. That’s almost 800 people per day! According to report published by the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), out of South Africa’s population of over 54 million people, only 17.4% are covered by a South African medical scheme. This means that only 9.5 million South Africans have access to private medical care while more than 44 million don’t.

In the report, it was stated that “Private quality healthcare roughly refers to easy access to general practitioners (GPs), dentists and medication. Having access to adequate medical cover can drastically improve the quality of life and life expectancy of a person. The leading barrier to private healthcare in South Africa continues to be the price. The millions of South Africans living without medical cover put increasing pressure on the public health system.” The same principle applies to injuries sustained from road accidents in S.A. While it’s generally not something that we like to dwell on, the truth of the matter is that being treated in a private hospital following a motor vehicle accident has significant benefits which could save your life. Patients admitted following a motor vehicle accident have little or no delay in being treated and benefit from personalised care and treatment. Better facilities also generally mean that the recovery time is quicker.

Conscious Life Magazine

AccidentANGELS™ was established in 2010, with the view of providing affordable access to private healthcare, following a motor vehicle accident. A main member pays just R149 per month and he or she receives guaranteed access to private medical care. Included in this membership is the transport cost in an ER24 emergency ambulance to the nearest private hospital. When our members join us they receive an accidentANGELS™ MasterCard® which is activated on notification of an incident. Members are given access of up to R10 000 for out-patient care, which is treatment in the emergency room at the private hospital. This benefit is immediate because our member simply swipes the MasterCard® at the hospital to pay for treatment. If the car accident injuries are serious enough to require in-patient admittance into hospital, accidentANGELS™ provide up to R200 000 paid to the hospital for treatment. A R1 million benefit is also available at a main member fee of R259 per month. Members are also protected if they are travelling in public transport or even while walking as pedestrians on our roads. This means that the accidentANGELS™ benefit is not limited to people that drive a car.

One of our members was involved in an early morning accident where a car drove into the side of her car. This is what she had to say: “It was just another weekday morning, when out of nowhere a car drove into mine. Thanks to accidentANGELS™, I was able to go to a private hospital straight away. It was 8am and I was driving to work on a road close to my home. Suddenly, another driver who had skipped a stop street crashed into the side of my car. I injured my right shoulder quite badly and I had a concussion, but I was still able to phone for an ambulance. When I first bought my car, the accidentANGELS™ benefit was offered to me and I’m relieved that I decided to join. The accessibility and availability of their staff and services are great and they helped me tremendously. I really got the sense that the accidentANGELS™ staff truly cared about my well-being. All their interactions with me had a personal touch and they treated me with genuine empathy, and this is one of the reasons why I would recommend this benefit to all my friends.” If you’d like to know more about us and what we do, click here or visit our website. www.accidentangels.co.za

accidentANGELS™ also assist our members with the submission and management of any valid claims against the Road Accident Fund (RAF). Claims made against the RAF can take as long as 3 years to be resolved, so this service ensures that the claim receives the right focus and attention. Funds that are paid out are paid back to the member, less any medical expenses incurred as a result of the accident. There are no fees deducted from the proceeds before funds are paid to our member.

Drumming is as fundamental a form of human expression as speaking, and likely emerged long before humans even developed the capability of using the lips, tongue and vocal organs as instruments of communication. The first sound we ever heard while still in our mother’s womb, was the beating of her heart, and the rhythm of her breath. No matter our race, gender, age, religion or belief system, this common experience exists for all human beings. When newcomers are first introduced to drumming, they often say “oh, I don’t have any rhythm,” in an attempt to excuse themselves for their imagined inadequacy.

THE TRUTH IS: WE ALL HAVE RHYTHM! Rhythm is our natural inheritance. It exists in our bodies, our hearts, our breath. It exists in the vibration of atoms, the cycles of the seasons, the ticking of clocks, the orbit of the earth. There is no part of creation that is without rhythm!

Conscious Life Magazine

Study results demonstrate that drumming is a valuable treatment for stress, fatigue, anxiety, hypertension, asthma, chronic pain, arthritis, mental illness, migraines, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, paralysis, emotional disorders, and a wide range of physical disabilities.

REDUCES TENSION, AND STRESS

Drumming is a practice that spans the globe and has a presence in every culture. It has been used for centuries in rituals, ceremonies, communication, rites of passage, music and dance, celebration, healing, community building, and cultural events.

ANXIETY,

Drumming induces deep relaxation, lowers blood pressure, and reduces stress. Stress, according to current medical research, contributes to nearly all disease and is a primary cause of such life-threatening illnesses as heart attacks, strokes, and immune system breakdowns. A recent study found that a program of group drumming helped reduce stress and employee turnover in the long-term care industry and might help other high-stress occupations as well.

Drum therapy is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and selfexpression. From the shamans of Mongolia to the Minianka healers of West Africa, therapeutic rhythm techniques have been used for thousands of years to create and maintain physical, mental, and spiritual health. Current research is now verifying the therapeutic effects of ancient rhythm techniques. Recent research reviews indicate that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well-being, a release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self. Other studies have demonstrated the calming, focusing, and healing effects of drumming on Alzheimer’s patients, autistic children, emotionally disturbed teens, recovering addicts, trauma patients, and prison and homeless populations.

INCREASES BRAIN WHITE MATTER & EXECUTIVE COGNITIVE FUNCTION A 2014 study published in the Journal of Huntington’s Disease found that two months of drumming intervention in Huntington’s patients (considered an irreversible, lethal neurodegenerative disease) resulted in “improvements in executive function and changes in white matter microstructure, notably in the genu of the corpus callosum that connects prefrontal cortices of both hemispheres.”[ix]The study authors concluded that the pilot study provided novel preliminary evidence that drumming (or related targeted behavioral stimulation) may result in “cognitive enhancement and improvements in colossal white matter microstructure.”

CONTROL CHRONIC PAIN Chronic pain has a progressively draining effect on the quality of life. Researchers suggest that drumming serves as a distraction from pain and grief. Moreover, drumming promotes the production of endorphins and endogenous opiates, the bodies own morphine-like painkillers, and can thereby help in the control of pain.

group drumming actually increases cancerkilling cells, which help the body combat cancer as well as other viruses, including AIDS. According to Dr. Bittman, “Group drumming tunes our biology, orchestrates our immunity, and enables healing to begin.”3

ACCESSES THE ENTIRE BRAIN The reason rhythm is such a powerful tool is that it permeates the entire brain. Vision for example is in one part of the brain, speech another, but drumming accesses the whole brain. The sound of drumming generates dynamic neuronal connections in all parts of the brain even where there is significant damage or impairment such as in Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). According to Michael Thaut, director of Colorado State University’s Center for Biomedical Research in Music, “Rhythmic cues can help retrain the brain after a stroke or other neurological impairment, as with Parkinson’s patients…” The more connections that can be made within the brain, the more integrated our experiences become.

SOCIO-EMOTIONAL DISORDERS A powerful 2001 study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that low-income children who enrolled in a 12-week group drumming intervention saw multiple domains of social-emotional behavior improve significantly, from anxiety to attention, from oppositional to post-traumatic disorders.

BOOSTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM A recent medical research study indicates that drumming circles boost the immune system. Led by renowned cancer expert Barry Bittman, MD, the study demonstrates that

RELEASING EMOTIONS Drumming can be used to express emotions whether you want to release alone or in psychotherapy. We can drum a multitude of emotions such as happiness, fear, sadness and anger. Friedman states “happiness is usually played as a series of rapid, syncopated beats. Fear might be expressed as staccato tappings. Sadness usually evokes slow, ponderous beats while anger becomes hard, loud and energetic.” Friedman discusses the concept of “Alchemical Drumming” to release unhealthy emotions whether it is anger, frustration or guilt into the drum. Through simply tapping a drum, negative emotions can be transformed into healthy ones. There is nothing like drumming to bring one into a sense of personal power. It builds selfconfidence and esteem. In one exercise we did, we drummed a repetitious beat for over a half an hour to put us in touch with the warrior archetype. This beat conjured up a sense of determination, power and perseverance helping to push through “whiny” thoughts like my hands are sore, my back aches or this is taking too long.

Every time you take a step, you have an impact on the world. Does the impact of your footsteps bring you joy, abundance and light, or are parts of your life stuck? If you're reading these words, you're on a spiritual path -- or at least you're interested in spirituality. Many people believe that there is no link between the practicality of money and the essence of spirituality, and this may be a clue if you are stuck when it comes to money. The truth is, we are beings of light, living on the earth. We need to use the light within to navigate the practical challenges of living in the world. And that means, healing our relationship with money, so that we can live a life of abundance and flow. Most of us have an unhealthy relationship with money. If our body was reflected in our bank account we would have a permanent runny nose, and find ourselves limping a lot. In the same way as you would do whatever it takes to get your body healthy again it may be time to get your relationship with money healthy again • If you believe that Spirituality and money don't belong together, you may need to heal your relationship with money. • If you believe that being "spiritually evolved," will somehow make money flow into your bank account, you may need to heal your relationship with money. • If you think that if you just "believe in the law of abundance" by visualizing and praying that money will manifest... you may need to heal your relationship with money. What is your "energy blueprint" when it comes to money? Many people say money is energy, but this is not true - money is just pieces of paper, or numbers on an ATM screen. The way you speak about money, they way you behave with money, and most of all how you feel about money and what you believe about money -- that is the energy blueprint you are using around money. And, this impacts how money responds to you. Are you fearful about money -- that you don't have enough? Do you spend money joyfully, or with resentment? Do you avoid talking about money? Do you avoid looking at your money situation? Do you apologise for money? Are you ashamed of needing money?

Conscious Life Magazine

These are the beliefs and actions that set your money energy blueprint. People who have a lot of money, love money. They love talking about it, they love spending it, they love looking at it, and most of all they love having it. If you think of that person -- a person who loves money -- do you think of them as not being "spiritual?" Do you think of them as somehow being less evolved than you? Do you think they are just in it for their own ego? Now ask a question? Do those people have an easier time than you do. They may still suffer, have health problems, have relationship challenges. Maybe they don't enjoy their work or aren't living their passion. That's not the point. The question is: do they have an easier time because they also have money, than somebody with less money? Of course they have an easier time. Nobody was born as a being of light to come to this world just in order to suffer. That would make no sense. And you're right -- some people use money as "ego" money. They love money and maybe they depend on money to feel OK. This is a path that you have probably rejected. You realise that self-worth comes from within, and that the worth of a person is not the money in their bank account. What if we could see a difference between what we call "ego" money and "soul" money. What if you could live a spiritual life, live a higher purpose, live an ethical and abundant life... and have the money you need in your life so that you can live you true life's purpose. Because as we've said before, nobody was born into light to come to earth to suffer. Here are three key principles that you can embrace today, that will start to change your thinking and start healing your relationship with money. • Confront your own shame or reluctance to have money. Lots of our clients and workshop participants say to me: "I don't want a lot. I just want Rx amount." Isn't that an interesting idea? They know they want some money -- and they are scared or ashamed of asking for it. They think it's more spiritual or more moral or somehow better to ask for only a little. It’s ok to want, even to demand. What do you want? • Confront your guilt about having money. There is a lot of money in the world. Money is never going to run out. If you have money, other people will have money as well. The richest man in the world at the moment is Jeff Bezos. Last year he earned more money than 28 entire countries. That's in one year, he made more money than the GDP or 28 countries. If he's got so much money, how come there's still any money left over for you? The point is - it doesn't matter how much any person has, there is always more money. And that is the true meaning of the law of abundance. • Many people who pray for abundance, act with a scarcity mindset. The universe responds to action, not prayer alone. Please don't take this as permission to spend money you don't have. That is not an abundance mindset -- that is actually a scarcity mindset. Living an abundant life, as you know from your spiritual practice, means you believe there is more than enough for you in the world -- whether that's time, or love, or trust, or faith... or money. Abundance is your birthright. Are you ready to receive it? Learning to receive is a key part of working with the Divine. It’s easy to find the answer to that question. Look at your life. Where are you the richest? Is it love? Is it time? is it creativity? That's where you are acting in accordance with the law of abundance.

Conscious Life Magazine

Now look at your life. Where are you the poorest? Is it with self-worth? With passion? With love, time or creativity? And is one of those areas also money? If it is, perhaps it's time to heal your relationship with those things. And since it makes life so much easier, maybe start with healing your relationship with money.

The next Healing Your Relationship With Money workshop is run on the weekend of 11/12 August 2018 by Taryn Sydow in Bryanston, Gauteng. For more information, contact taryn@surrendertoyoursoul.com. In this powerful workshop you will discover your money energy blueprint and resolve blockages to have to receiving the abundance available to you.

She has two children and runs a successful spiritual healing practice -- and has learnt through her connection to the Divine to have a healthy relationship with money. Conscious Life Magazine

By Penni Du Plessis – Divine Space The 3rd dimensional energy was very much about Bi-ology (which means 2) and represented physicality and everything you had been focusing on to heal, enhance or maintain your physical body or physical reality. We were taught that everything we project, and think about was magnetic and that we drew that same energy towards us – as a mirror. If you can think about your past a little, you will get confirmations of this in many ways. When living in chaos, trauma and drama – did we not create more and more of the same, until you literally feel like you want to either explode, or disappear onto a deserted island where you can hide away from it all. If I look back on my life I can cringe at how many times I turned down what may have been amazing opportunities because I was just too overwhelmed and busy to take on another thing. What if … there are other dimensional aspects of ourselves that have chosen the paths we think we have rejected… so that in fact, we are experiencing them all in the same time and space as we are in right now. This is a totally new and interesting concept to think about (we will explore more of this in future newsletters). The trick is that as we become more entrained in the 5th dimension, we will be able to tap into those other aspects of ourselves, to learn from and to share what we have learned, integrated and mastered.

Conscious Life Magazine

The 5th dimension holds the energy of tri-ology, and the trinity holds the answers to our next evolutionary step forward. This knowledge is already inside of us, and we just have to remember how to pull back the veil to tap into the truth that is already there. Life will always be cycles of highs and lows, ups and down, and when we begin to anchor more and more in the 5th dimension, and begin to master it; we will enjoy the ups to the fullest while knowing that we have the power to get through the downs with ease. So stop the self judgement and regret… and start acknowledging the gift you are right now. You are pure magic, pure light and pure potential. Breath this knowing into every part of your being, and exponentialise it to support everyone and everything…

Here is a wonderful visualisation you can do to anchor this process: Anoint your body with the Violet Light Matrix oil, and find a comfortable space to meditate. ….. See yourself lying in a beautiful lavender field or floating on your back in a warm pool filled with lavender coloured liquid (lavender/violet is the colour of transformation). See light entering through the top of your head and filtering into every corner of your brain – awakening the dormant cells and neural pathways of the brain. Visualise tracing the light through those pathways and firing up more and more neural pathways. You may begin to see geometric forms of light, activate and move. Spinning and floating at the same time – like overlaying layers of movement at different tempos and timing… spend some time on this, and when you are ready let’s move to the next level… Draw this light of knowing from your head – down into your heart and feel the expansiveness this brings to your heart chakra. Feel it glowing and growing as this brilliant light begins to heal the heart of all past disappointments, judgements and rejections. Don’t focus on the issues in any way – simply notice where they have created restrictions or limitations deep within the heart chakra itself – you will know where they are – just trust yourself… and allow the same movements, shapes and pure light to awaken and heal those dense areas in the heart chakra…

Conscious Life Magazine

And finally let us now invite the higher self to participate in this visualisation. See the light of your higher self as a brilliant crystal above you, forming the top point of a triangle (trinity). The higher self knows it all and requires no awakening or healing, simply an acknowledgement and an invitation to participate and support the conscious work you have begun. Allow that higher state of consciousness to pour its supportive light into both your crown and heart chakras, solidifying and anchoring the changes you have initiated. And now see that triangle morph into a pyramid of light and draw light energy into it so that it expands to the size of the room you are in – anchoring the pyramid of light into that space… And now imagine filling the pyramid with even more and more light and energy until it expands to the size of your office building or home… and now expand it enough so that it covers the entire suburb that you live in … then your city… your country and then expand it enough to encompass the entire planet. Invite healing and light to every being on the planet and to the earth itself. Hold it there for as long as it takes, and then leave the pyramid locked in place as you bring your awareness back into your physical body and the room.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Record yourself reading the visualisation part of this missive, so that you can listen to it regularly (even while sleeping), and let’s see how we can change the reality on the planet. What if many of us around the world could do this regularly… would this help the earth and all its beings shift into the 5th dimensional reality with us? What else is possible beautiful beings? Another awesome resource to help you on this journey (with thanks to Steve Nobel): Listen to Rainbow Bridge Transmission: Upgrade Your Chakra System to 5D. https://soundcloud.com/conscious-media/rainbow-bridge-transmission-upgradeyour-chakra-system-to-5d As you remember the light within yourselves, and you share it with the world – you become even more magical – know this and honour the gifts you have.

Until next time… Blessings and light be with you always Penni http://divinespace.co.za/event-calendar/

the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to simmer, add most of the basil, and let it simmer for about half an hour, stirring occasionally. • For a less chunky soup, carefully transfer the mixture to a food processor or blender, leaving space at the top, and puree it while holding down the lid. • Return the mixture to the pan, add the vegetable broth, and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for a few more minutes. • Ladle the soup into bowls, garnish with the remaining basil, and serve with crusty artisan bread or rolls. REIKI A quantity that is almost impossible to define! Energy can never be created or destroyed, only converted from one form to another. Among the familiar forms are heat energy, energy of motion, electrical energy, and sound energy. Reiki is a form of energy healing. This form of healing helps to maintain balance within, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Reiki is a form or spiritual or energy healing. It helps open up and remove blockages

Antbear Drakensberg Lodge offers various Drakensberg accommodation options in en suite double rooms, luxury suites, family units and also boasts a luxury cave too. Antbear Drakensberg Lodge is one of those smaller intimate kind places which has been lovingly put together. The natural setting of the accommodation is stunning and we have managed to encase all this beauty with an atmosphere of comfort and ease. The cottages are smartly appointed and individually designed and the fact that we are a small place makes for an intimate and personal accommodation experience. Each of the accommodation units are different and are decorated with uniquely eccentric and artistic wooden furniture. It is a bit off the beaten track and is more of an insider tip than just another bed and breakfast. We cater for small intimate groups and never have more than 45 guests at a time. It's a laid back, lovingly cared for kind of place where you feel a sense of happiness and peace. Honeymoon stays turn into anniversary commemorations just as guests become friends. Even foreign tourists return for a second and third taste.

Because food is an important part of your stay Meals are part of the real surprises that the Antbear Lodge has to offer where home grown cooking is part of the deal. We like to use our own home grown organic vegetables and if we haven’t got, then we lean heavily on those local providers with similar attitudes to our own. Conny and Andrew both like cooking and are up to changing just about anything to suit tastes or philosophies. Our cooking experience is in part a journal, a record of events and memories expressed in recipes. In the course of our travels we have filed away many recipes and with them images of people and places and their lives. How food tastes has much to do with the associations we make and if you would like to hear the tales of our meals we would love to tell them.

Sustainable & responsible tourism is our social responsibility and what we do to give something back to our community and environment We believe in sustainable tourism and social responsibility. We live is a spectacularly beautiful place called the Drakensberg and our standard of living here is exceptional. But around us lie contrasts of poverty and lack of development. If we are to keep our way of life then it surely follows that we must do everything in our power to contribute to the upliftment and prosperity of this rural area. We believe that the future of South Africa is linked to the prosperity of the people, and that upliftment is linked to education. And as such we have chosen to support our local primary school called Vulakani Primary School.

Pet friendly accommodation Drakensberg One of the few pet-friendly places in the Drakensberg. Beautiful, vast views of the Drakensberg with plenty of ground for my dogs to roam. Walk for hours. Your dogs will be happy with lots of dams to swim in and horses to discover. One of the accommodation units at Antbear Lodge is fenced in so its really easy to leave your dog behind if you would like to explore some of the sights where pets are not that welcome. If country life is for you and you would love to take your pet with you then Antbear Lodge is a great accommodation choice. Your hosts will advise you on all the activities available. Antbear Lodge prides itself on being both family-friendly and petfriendly.

Help us Fight the Dog Meat Trade URGENT: Our Animal Rescue Team has identified a dog meat farm in South Korea where more than 170 dogs are in desperate need of help. Please make an urgent donation to help us rescue these dogs and save them from a brutal death. Stolen from the streets, shoved into trucks, locked in cages. Then slaughtered and sold to be eaten. This is the horrifying fate of the millions of dogs caught up in Asia’s dog meat trade.

Please join the fight to shut down this brutal industry for good. With your help, we’ll shut down farms in South Korea, assist farmers as they transition to more humane livelihoods, support our local Chinese partners in intercepting dog meat traders’ trucks, fund the care of confiscated and rescued animals and lobby for better laws throughout Asia.

You can help stop this cruelty. Please give today.

Act Now Please fill out the form (link) to add your name to the petition calling for vital legal protection for cats and dogs in South Korea. Conscious Life Magazine

Help us bring hope to girls without and choices to those with none. Founded in 2000 by Khanyisile Motsa, and run under her diligent care ever, Home of Hope for Girls is an autonomous, self-started initiative to provide real care for exploited, trafficked and abused children in the city of Johannesburg. It is more than just a residential shelter; it is a loving home where dignity is restored, the past is healed and the girls are given the tools to take control of their futures. Home of Hope also reaches out to the community offering the most vulnerable members support, practical help and a lifeline.

The Background to Home of Hope An estimated 10,000 children are prostitutes in Johannesburg and this figure is increasing. When Khanyisile Motsa relocated to Hillbrow she was shocked to observe girls as young as nine working as prostitutes and selling drugs on the streets at night. The truth about these forgotten children is: • • • • • •

Child Prostitute. Photo by Tseliso Monaheng

Criminals pay agents to recruit children They usually target often orphans or/and those from very disadvantaged rural communities Victims are trafficked or seduced to leave with lies about a life in the city Their IDs are frequently taken from them to make escape and identification difficult Their IDs are often sold on the black market ‘Owned’ by their exploiters they are prostituted, abused, made to sell drugs

PAWS R US (SA) is looking for INVESTORS – help us BUILD THE DREAM of our “HAPPY PLACE”! After 6 years in animal welfare/rescue, PAWS R US (SA) has moved into the LINBER KENNELS facility out in the Tarlton area, JHB. It is time to spread our wings, create a permanent home, and contribute more effectively to both the cause and effects linked to animal welfare/rescue in SA. Our dream is to build the LINBER KENNELS facility into a top-notch rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming haven for rescue dogs. We also want to establish a home-base for our EDUCATION campaigns, so that we can work with the youth in returning to the core value of COMPASSION and RESPECT for Self and All Life. To make this dream a reality, we need to BUY the LINBER KENNELS site. And to get that done, we need to find INVESTORS and PARTNERS who want to contribute to something greater than themselves, and help make a real, immediate and practical difference in a world that has lost its way. The PAWS R US (SA) TRUST has been created as a legal entity – and we now look to spread the net open wide and “go on the hunt” for kindred spirits who want to help build something GOOD. We need INVESTORS of the HEART and MIND – those who want to protect the vulnerable, educate the youth of tomorrow, and know that their investment has directly uplifted lives and communities. CONTACT: For all enquiries and details related to this search for INVESTORS, and the implications for each INVESTOR within the Trust, please email us on woof@pawsrus.co.za

Save the Children believes every child deserves a future. In South Africa and around the world, we work every day to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When crisis strikes, and children are most vulnerable, we are always among the first to respond and the last to leave. We ensure children’s unique needs are met and their voices are heard. We deliver lasting results for millions of children, including those hardest to reach. We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.

We need your help to ensure that no child is left behind. In a tough funding environment, we have ensured we have multiple avenues of funding and are proud to have 11,000 generous individual donors contributing monthly. We will continue to be innovative in securing funding to enable us to reach more children and will work on increasing unrestricted and consistent funding streams. You can help us make a difference.
