Dearest Conscious Life Friends Has your Autumn gotten off to a good start? I hope so. As we move through Autumn and into Winter, it becomes increasingly important to treat ourselves, our bodies, mind and spirit with love and care. When last did you actually stop and just sit in silence, listening to your bodymind and it’s needs? Creating a loving and accepting space for it to just be? I imagine that for many of you, as it was for me, it has been some time. 3 weeks back I attended Wendy Young’s, from Wise Living, weekend Self Care Retreat in the heart of the Magaliesberg Mountains. I chose to do so as I was feeling somewhat wrung out and honestly, demotivated. Deep down I knew that what I really needed was some self-care, some me time. Getting in touch with my bodymind and it’s needs, instead of just moving from one task to another each day. Sound familiar? So, off I drove on a Friday afternoon, to Thirsty Falls Guest Lodge in Magaliesberg. From the moment that I left the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, I could feel myself unwinding. My soul felt happy and at peace as I drove through the mountains. You see, what I hadn't fully realised at the time was this: my body, mind and soul had been calling out to me to listen to it’s desire and need to be in the countryside and finally I was listening. I arrived just after the sun set, to the most beautiful guest farm, on the slopes of the majestic mountain range, overlooking more mountains. Blissfully peaceful with a starry night sky that took my breath away.

After unpacking, my “chalet –mate” and I made our way down to dinner with the others attending the retreat. A beautifully simple and tasty meal had been prepared by Jenny, of Thirsty Falls, using Ayurvedic recipes given to her by Wendy. Wendy shared that part of self care, is being mindful of your body and the way your digestion system operates. We tend to think that we need a variety of flavours and components in every meal we eat and this is in fact not great for our digestive system as it gives it too much to work with. Wendy’s saying is “Simplicity in a meal and variety in a week” I am seeing that this is very true. It is also important to have smaller portions, eating only until you are half full and allowing a quarter space for liquid (which you don’t consume straight after eating as it interferes with the stomach acids needed for digestion) and a quarter for the digestive process. This seemingly simple way of eating is a great way to really care for yourself. Try it, it will do you so much good and leave you feeling great. After dinner we sat in a circle and discussed our ideas on what we felt self care was. We then meditated and were encouraged to observe silence for the rest of the evening until 9am the following morning. I found that I really loved the observed silence. It allowed me the space and time to just be with myself and recharge my battery so to speak. The next morning we woke early and started the day with meditation and movement – as Wendy refers to the yoga. I loved the way that Conscious Life Magazine

Conscious Life Magazine

Wendy led us in yogic movement – encouraging us to be mindful of each movement and practice “effortless effort”, moving in absolute harmony with the breath. I felt very in tune with my body in this practice.

I met such beautiful souls on the retreat too and would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of them for being there, with love, holding the space for each other. You all know who you are. Namaste!

We did this on both mornings, at the same time – it is important for your body and nervous system to have a routine as it provides stability and support, allowing for relaxation.

My advice to you, is to watch the magazine for the announcement of Wendy’s next Self Care Retreat and do yourself an immense kindness and book your spot! You will be so glad that you did!

We also spent an hour each day sharing and learning about self care. One of the tools that Wendy taught us, has been very useful to me since. It is a practice of mindfulness: sitting still,, straight back, eyes closed and dropping your awareness into your body, becoming aware of how your organs are held by your pelvic “bowl”. Moving your awareness to your “back body” as Wendy refers to it, essentially, the inside of your back as I understand it, and rest there. Just feeling the sensations in the body. Allowing whatever emotions are present to arise and just be. Giving them the space to truly be, without judgment, criticism, repression etc, just letting them be with love, as you would do for a small child. You wouldn’t scold them for how they were feeling – you would simply show them love and provide a safe space for them to share their feelings. So too, is it important to do this for our bodymind. This is self care. In this way, by allowing your bodymind to be heard and present, you start to gain an understanding of what you are needing and how best to look after and care for yourself. To do so with friendliness and unconditional love. There was so much more that I learnt on the retreat and that is still processing within me. And I feel that it will be doing so for some time, which is wonderful.

I would also highly recommend booking a weekend away at Thirsty Falls Guest Farm, to get away from it all, revitalise and recharge your batteries. Jenny and Alan are great hosts and Felix the cat will gladly welcome you too. The farm boasts beautiful views of the mountains as I mentioned, an eco pool which is lovely to swim in, great trails and the most beautiful labyrinth which we were fortunate enough to walk. The labyrinth is pictured at the start of my article and there is a beautiful story around its creation and the lovely acacia tree at its centre. To book go to www.thirstyfalls.com To find out more about Wendy’s retreats and her work go to: www.wise-living.co.za I invite you to enjoy this month’s issue which is host to a variety of articles to help your live your best life with intent: Collecting & Spreading Happiness; Learning about Pitta Dosha; 12 Natural Flu Remedies; Eye Exercises; A reality Check on Sugar; Operating in the 5th Dimension; Green Living tips; Animal Care; Retreats, Courses, Yoga and more. Article by António Bastos We live in an uncertain world and we are continuously being bombarded by dreadful stories from the news media, advertising media, social media and from individuals that we talk to. These, often inaccurate, stories appeal to our predisposition for negativity and pessimism and contribute to a state of anxiety. I know about living with negativity and pessimism, I am Portuguese. We, the Portuguese, generally go through the day imagining that something is wrong or that something is going to go wrong. And even when something that we thought would go wrong, goes right, we still wonder: “What if it had gone wrong?”. And we re-live the same anxiety as if there is still the possibility of the event going wrong. What a waste of life! I know that this is a strange concept for most of you to understand, but trust me, these thoughts were very much real for many years of my early life. This attitude caused me a lot of sadness. Many years later I started working with frequencies and read about thoughts and feelings. I realised that although my thoughts were real they were not true. I read how we, all of us not just the Portuguese, have developed a psychological

immune system to give justification to our perceived realities. A set of biases that keep us certain of our beliefs. These preconceptions have been grouped into what is now referred to as our cognitive biases. Two of these biases are our negativity bias and our pessimist bias. I could not instantly change millions of years of my evolutionary process but I could certainly change my inherited software package. I decided that an easy way to do this would be to collect happiness. Happiness is defined as a “state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy”. Collecting happiness is not about accumulating stuff but about a change in my attitude to situations that I find myself exposed to. Performing a check from the neck up. It is about choosing what I allow into my head and what I pay Conscious Life Magazine

attention to. What I pay attention to, becomes part of my life, what I do not pay attention to, as far as I am concerned, does not exist.

Let me give you an analogy. There is a radio station in the Eastern Cape, called Algoa FM. Algoa FM resonates at 95 MHz in Port Elizabeth. When I do not pay attention to 95 MHz, as far as my own reality is concerned, Algoa FM does not exist. But the moment that I resonate to 95 MHz, Algoa FM becomes part of my life. And so, it is with every situation that I am exposed to. Choosing whether to pay attention or not, to probabilistic threats is the first of my three steps to collect happiness. Whenever I am exposed to a story that makes me feel uncomfortable, I put it to a selection process. Let me share it with you. Step 1 I ask myself two questions: “Is this [situation] going to have a direct impact on my life?” and “Is there anything that I can do or choose to do to change it?”. If the answer to either of the questions is no, I choose not to pay attention to it. Having the situation become part of my reality will only serve to feed my negativity and pessimism. Whether I pay attention to it or not, the situation is not going to change. Most of these probabilistic threats are reported in the news and therefore I have made a conscious decision not to expose myself to visuals from an industry whose credo for content selection seems to be: “if it bleeds it leads”. Step 2 I deliberately identify, acknowledge and document what I treasure in my life, right now. I have compiled a list of everything in my life that gives rise to feelings of thankfulness and appreciation. I call this my gratitude list. I close my eyes and ask myself the following question: “Please tell me, what do you love?”. Whatever comes into my mind, I add to my gratitude list. Then each morning, before I do

anything else, I read through my gratitude list and feel my appreciation of each of the listings. By reminding myself of what I am grateful for, I immediately shift into a happy and optimistic state of mind which stays with me for the rest of the day. Instead of looking for what is wrong or what is going to go wrong, I find myself looking for more stuff to be grateful for and to add to my list.

Some of the items in my gratitude list are very basic, such as: “Being grateful for having a roof over my head and a bed to sleep in each night” and “Being grateful for Seafood Pizza from YiaYais restaurant”. I am also grateful for “The health, safety and security of all my family members and animals” and “I am grateful for being safe and secure wherever I am and whatever I am doing”. Step 3 Recognise the truth of each moment without resistance or judgement, in other words, my relationship with my reality right now, just as it is! Tara Brach calls it genuine acceptance. Let me give you her example. I am out walking in the park and it starts to pour down with rain. I have brought neither a raincoat nor an umbrella. My mind either accepts that “it is raining and I am getting soaked” or, what is the alternative? I can get down on myself for forgetting the umbrella and raincoat but that would be what the Buddhists refer to as the second arrow. The first arrow, in this example, is the discomfort of getting wet. The second arrow invokes the suffering, the self-punishment for not having brought an umbrella. Pain is inevitable but the suffering is optional. I practise not resisting presence and being with what is! I am learning to accept something, in this moment, without evaluating it as good, bad or worthwhile, and still draw all sorts of boundaries. Next time, I will carry an umbrella. I have found genuine acceptance to have what I would describe as a liberating quality. I also share my collection with others. Conscious Life Magazine

Sharing happiness is as easy as collecting it and again it is a three-attitude process. One The first of these is described as the most pleasing five letter word, S M I L E. Apart from making me more attractive, smiling starts more smiles, makes me and others feel good and makes my interaction with others easier and more enjoyable. Like all other mental attitudes, smiling changes the chemistry in my body. When I smile my body releases endorphins, our body’s natural pain killers. These endorphins reduce the cortisol hormone in the body which in turn reduces stress and boosts my body’s self-healing energy. All these benefits just from a smile, really good value. Two Another glitch in my software package has been my need to demonstrate that I am right. Even when it is true, asserting my ideas is not conducive to spreading happiness. I am working on a permanent software upgrade but for now, Wayne Dyer thought me a valuable patch to use: “When given the choice between being right or kind, choose kind”. This new software release is to be kind like Madiba. Nelson Mandela was the very definition of kindness, friendly, warmhearted, humane, forgiving and considerate without any agenda or judgement.

Three The third step to spreading happiness: I take my two dogs to Settlers park each day for a walk-in mindfulness. Walking in mindfulness is when I purposely bring myself to the only reality in my life, the present moment. I leave behind all electronic gadgets and I come home to my body. I forget thoughts from my past and block illusions of what may or may not happen to me in the future. I take in all sensations of walking and breathing. I pay attention to my body, to the nature surrounding me, to the many sounds and to the gaps between the sounds. Shiela and Annie, who always live in the now, are always happy to be out walking and sniffing in the daily news. We pick up the pace for twenty minutes or so. This deepens our breathing which increases the oxygen content in the blood and assists in the release of those endorphins that make us feel so good. Forty minutes or so later, we are back at the start of the trail and at the end of another great day. I find that collecting happiness is a very economical and hugely rewarding hobby and that by doing it, day by day in every way, I am getting happier and happier. Those feelings of anxiety and worry are now just another memory and no longer real.

Article by Wendy Young of Wise Living

“It is the opinion of the wise that if an action produces a bad result, now or later, one should not perform it.” Charaka Samhita Continuing our exploration of Ayurveda, in this article we look at the Pitta Dosha in greater detail. Pitta is made up of the fire and water elements. This contradictory combination is really complimentary. Pitta exists as water or oil in the body which protects the tissues from the destructive aspect fire. Pitta is the principle of transformation and heat so Pitta is responsible for all chemical and metabolic conversions in the body that create energy and heat. All Pitta’s processes involve digestion or cooking, including the cooking of thoughts into theories in the mind. It governs our mental digestion, our capacity to perceive reality and understand things as they are, our judgment, discrimination, willpower, enthusiasm and joy, competition and courage. In the body Pitta governs our appetite, digestion and metabolism of nutrients, thirst, body heat and colour, the lustre of the skin, the shine of the hair and the light in the eyes.

It’s main site in the body is in the small intestines and is also found in the eyes, blood, sweat, glands, stomach and lymph. Physically Pitta people tend to be medium build and weight, with attractive, well proportioned figures. Their eyes are medium size, shiny bright and can be sensitive to sunlight and irritants and become red easily. Their skin tends to be warm to the touch, sensitive to heat, sunlight and irritants and prone to rashes and pimples. Pitta types blush easily or flush with anger or from drinking alcohol. They sweat easily, even in cold weather and never seem to feel the cold. They have fine, often straight and oily hair which turns grey early. Pitta men often go bald at a young age. Pitta people have good appetites and love eating. They dislike missing meals and when hungry can be irritable and weak. Their digestion is good Conscious Life Magazine

and their bowels efficient but if they get hot, agitated or angry or eat too many hot spicy or fried foods (which they love!) they can suffer from indigestion, heartburn or diarrhoea. They are quite methodical, organised, they can be rather obsessive about time and tend to be perfectionists. Pitta types are naturally intelligent, quite fiery, they can be domineering, intolerant and don’t suffer fools gladly. Hot weather, getting overheated by vigorous exercise, hot spicy food and red meats can all increase Pitta. If your Pitta is high you may feel hot, irritable, angry, overly critical and competitive and there is a tendency to be a workaholic. High Pitta causes inflammatory problems, skin conditions, excessive hunger and thirst, burning sensations in the body and difficulty sleeping. The most important spiritual challenge for Pitta people is to learn how to transform their tendency for anger and irritability into a feeling of calm and love as well as expressing their emotions in a harmless non-judgmental way. To awaken and express unconditional love is the culmination of this spiritual challenge. HOW TO NOURISH AND BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL RHYTHMS The Ayurvedic principle of ‘like increases like’ helps us nourish our individual rhythms and achieve balance in our lives. According to this principle, we are nourished by the qualities that are not innate to our individual dosha. We should avoid the intake of things that are like our own qualities and increase the intake of things that are unlike our qualities. Pitta Dosha is a combination of fire and water elements and is therefore nourished by ether, air and earth. Pitta’s fast and decisive rhythms are balanced by qualities of

moderation and calmness. Pitta is aggravated by pungent, salty and sour flavours (as they increase heat), in the middle of a meal, at midday (10am – 2pm) and at midnight (10pm – 2am), by anger and irritation, repressed emotions, in summer, from adolescence to middle age, from excessive ambition, a hot and damp climate. Because like attracts like there is a natural tendency to be attracted to these! As Pitta is hot, oily and intense it is aggravated by these tendencies. It is best balanced by their opposites – cooling, calm, loving, compassionate, moderation: • Rise with the sun and go to bed by 10pm • Plan activities ahead to avoid time pressure • Maintain projects and activities that create ease • Practice more compassionate meditation and uncompetitive yoga practices • Eat wholesome, moderately cool or warm, substantial and calming foods that are sweet, bitter and astringent in flavour • Avoid hot, spicy, oily, salty, fermented foods as well as the use of stimulants • Cooling drinks – rose water, peppermint , coriander • Avoid hot, humid and stressful environments • Embrace serenity and calmness • Calming massage with light oils – almond, coconut, sunflower Wendy Young is the founder of Wise Living, a teaching and holistic healing practice based in Johannesburg. People with a depressed immune system or nutrient deficiencies may be more prone to catching the flu or a cold. Stress, lack of sleep and exposure to toxins can worsen flu symptoms. According to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on December 8, 2017, flu activity has been increasing in the U.S. since early November. Based on data from October 1 to November 25, 2017, researchers found Influenza A viruses predominated in all age groups and Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts and Oklahoma all had widespread flu activity. (1) Luckily, there are flu natural remedies that can help. Conscious Life Magazine

Conventional Treatment Conventional flu treatment includes antiviral drugs and vaccines. As I’m sure you know, I do not recommend you get a flu shot as a preventative measure for the flu. These vaccines can cause side effects and often contain dangerous chemicals and preservatives. On rare occasions, they may even cause severe allergic reactions. The CDC recently made some additions to the 2007 guidelines on nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to protect oneself and others against the flu. Some of the recommendations for personal NPIs include: (3) • • • • •

Staying home when you’re sick. Staying home if you’ve been exposed to a sick family or household member. Covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Washing your hands or using hand sanitizer. Covering your nose or mouth with a mask or cloth if you are sick and have to be around others at a community gathering of people.

Implementing these behaviours can help stop the spread of flu. You may be wondering how to get rid of the flu in 24 hours without medicine. If you or a loved one already has the flu, read on below for some home flu natural remedies you can use to find relief from your symptoms.

12 Flu Natural Remedies So, how do you get rid of the flu naturally? Home remedies for the flu include vitamins C and D, herbal supplements, essential oils, probiotics and eating healthy. Try these flu natural remedies to help relieve your symptoms.

1. Vitamin C (1,000 mg 3–4x daily) • Vitamin C helps with immune system function and boosts white blood cells. • Take 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily to ward off a cold or the flu.

Eat whole fruits and vegetables.

2. Vitamin D (2,000 IU daily) • Vitamin D is produced in the body by sunlight and regulates the expression of over 2,000 genes, including those of the immune system. Recent research shows that low vitamin D levels are linked to higher rates of cold, flu and respiratory infections. (4) • Many physicians believe that current recommended daily amounts of vitamin D are far too low, and that 2,000 rather than 200-400 units per day is a better choice. • To treat cold or flu, take 2,000 units per kilogram of body weight once a day for three days. • You can also order home testing kits to test your vitamin D levels. 3. Echinacea (1,000 mg 2–3x daily) • This herb can help your body fight off infections, but it is best to take it at the first sign of illness. • An extract of Echinacea was tested in a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial in 2013. Researchers found that the Echinacea effectively treated respiratory tract infections in the short- and longterm, and didn’t cause the same resistance as a popular flu medication, oseltamivir, often causes when treating this illness. (5) • Echinacea acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce bronchial symptoms of cold and flu. • Echinacea directly attacks yeast and other kinds of fungus. • Different preparations have different concentrations of Echinacea. Some common preparations and dosages include: • Tablets containing 6.78 milligrams of Echinacea extract, two tablets three times a day. • 900 milligrams of Echinacea root tincture daily.

Five to six cups of Echinacea tea on the first day of symptoms, and then 1 cup a day thereafter.

4. Elderberry (10 mL daily) • It is believed that this herb can deactivate the flu virus and naturally boost immunity. • The flowers and berries of elderberry are said to boost the immune system, treat flu and relieve sinus pain. • Elderberry does seem to attack flu viruses and reduce bronchial inflammation. A preliminary study found that it reduced severity and length of flu symptoms when given at the first signs of symptoms. 5. Oregano Oil (500 mg 2x daily) • Oregano oil has a powerful antiviral effect. 6. Zinc (50–100 mg daily) • Zinc supports immune function and has an antiviral effect. (6) It works best when taken at the first sign of illness. • Zinc may lessen the symptoms of the cold virus but excessive amounts aren’t good for you. Zinc pills and sprays do not seem to be effective. • Take 50–100 milligrams of zinc daily to ward off or treat cold and flu symptoms. 7. Brewer’s Yeast • Brewer’s yeast contains B vitamins, chromium and protein. It is used for cold, flu and other respiratory tract infections. • Brewer’s yeast stimulates intestinal enzymes to help relieve diarrhea, fights bacteria in the intestines and improves immune response to viruses that infect the lungs. • Research has found that Brewer’s yeast reduces the risk of getting a cold or the flu and helps symptoms dissipate more quickly.

Conscious Life Magazine

8. Essential Oils for Flu • Rubbing peppermint and frankincense essential oil into the neck and bottoms of the feet can naturally support the immune system. Also, clove oil can protect the body against infection and can speed recovery from the flu. 9. Chiropractic Care for Flu Prevention • During the 1918 flu epidemic, flu patients that received chiropractic care survived much more readily than those that didn’t. (7) • A 2011 study showed some promise for chiropractic care and its potential to help boost the immune system. (8) 10. Probiotics • Restoring the beneficial bacteria in your gut can help boost your immune system considerably. 11. Get Fresh Air • Indoor winter environments can be a source of concentrated toxins and germs. The dry air we inhale as we heat our homes during the winter makes airways more reactive and sensitive to viruses. • An added bonus to time spent outdoors in the winter is the extra bit of sunlight you receive. 12. Top Foods for Flu Recovery: • Light, easy to digest foods: Include soups with bone broth, cooked vegetables or herbal teas to help with digestion. Don’t force yourself to eat. • Water: Adequate hydration is the key to flushing out the virus from your system. Fluid helps your body to flush bacteria and viruses from your system. Drink approximately half your body weight in ounces daily of either spring water or reverse osmosis filtered water. Green and black teas are potent immune system-boosters and antioxidants. Try to drink at least 8 ounces every two hours. • Hot water with lemon, honey, and cinnamon: Honey and cinnamon helps prevent mucus build-up and keeps you hydrated. • Ginger: Make a ginger tea and add raw honey. • Garlic and onions: Both of these vegetable help boost immune function. At first glance , this may seem to be a crazy concept…but bear with us…just think about how long you spend in a shower. With the water and electricity that you use in a normal shower , you could reduce that as a monthly cost by using one of these energy saving shower heads. By using less water (hot and cold) , you would be able to effectively reduce the amount of electricity need to power that hot water , as well as the water usage. Energy Saving Shower Heads – Some figures. The savings on this as estimated by ESKOM in 2011 are in the table below Electricity and Water Savings Table Ordinary Shower Head Flow Rate

Water Savings Litres

Electricity Savings kWh

Monetary Savings Rands

R 1 053.36

R 1 170.40

*Eskom 2011 The above figures are based on a shower head that reduces the flow to 7 litres per minute and the cost units on electricity and water are based on 2011 figures. So at present, these savings would be even more than presented here. Click here to see Saving Energy’s range of energy saving showerheads and savings Also, if you limit your shower to 7 minutes and setting the geyser at 60°C , and use a low flow shower head that will reduce the flow rate from around 20 litres / minute to between 7 litres per minute and 9 litres per minute , you can save 35 litres of water per shower. Do the maths on this and you will see that if 4 people shower every day for 30 days , that's 140 litres of water per day,980 litres per week = 3920 litres per month , just by using energy saving shower heads. On the electricity side , this would amount to at least half of that water saved being hot (1960 litres) and that would also reduce electricity consumption significantly. Conscious Life Magazine

The planet is in danger of being destroyed by our greatest threat, ourselves!!!! It’s up to all of us to ensure we do not destroy the environment in which we live and the future environment in which our children will live. Recycling is as simple as separating home waste and educating our children to do the same. If we all take this step, it will make a huge difference to our environment and ensure that the various recyclables are recycled and disposed of in the correct manner or sent to the correct facilities for re-use. Recycling is a great way to save our natural resources and even generate energy. At ECOmonkey they are taking the first important step to try and minimise harmful waste left in our environment, by working with communities to clean up our surroundings, namely local parks and streams to create a clean environment and further creating employment opportunities through this initiative. Earth Probiotic help you to recycle your food waste into food for the soil with their Bokashi Recycling Kits. Working together, these two companies do a great job in helping to ensure the health of the planet. Let them help you do the same…

WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE… DO YOU??? Let's take the 1st step in creating a cleaner environment & ensuring our children have a brighter, cleaner future...

WE COLLECT YOUR RECYCLING & CREATE EMPLOYMENT: We collect & deliver the materials to various, community recycling projects we support, the materials are sorted & the income goes directly to the community members involved.

“I am willing to let go. I release. I let go. I release all tension. I release all fear. I release all anger. I release all guilt. I release all sadness. I let go of old limitations. I let go, and I am at peace.” Louis Hay Emotional problems are among the most painful of all. Occasionally we may feel angry, sad, lonely, guilty, anxious, or frightened. When these feelings take over and become predominant, our lives can become emotional battlegrounds. What we do with our feelings is important. Are we going to act out in some way? Will we punish others or force our will upon them? Will we somehow abuse ourselves? The belief that we’re not good enough is often at the root of these problems. Good mental health begins with loving the self. When we love and approve of ourselves completely—the good and the so-called bad— we can begin to change. Part of self-acceptance is releasing other people’s opinions. Many of the things we’ve chosen to believe about ourselves have absolutely no basis in truth. For example, a young man named Eric was a client of mine several years ago when I was seeing people privately. He was devastatingly handsome and made a good living as a model. He told me how difficult it was for him to go to the gym because he felt so unattractive. As we worked together, he recalled that a neighborhood bully from his childhood used to call him “ugly.” This person would also beat him up and constantly threaten him. In order to be left alone and feel safe, Eric began to hide. He bought into the idea that he wasn’t good enough. In his mind, he was ugly. Through self-love and doing positive affirmations, Eric has improved tremendously. His feelings of anxiety may come and go, but now he has some tools to work with.

Remember, feelings of inadequacy start with negative thoughts that we have about ourselves. However, these thoughts have no power over us unless we act upon them. Thoughts are only words strung together. They have no meaning whatsoever. Only we give meaning to them, and we do so by focusing on the negative messages over and over again in our minds. We believe the worst about ourselves. And we choose what kind of meaning we give to them. We’re always perfect, always beautiful, and ever-changing. We’re doing the best we can with the understanding, knowledge, and awareness we have. As we grow and change more and more, our “best” will only get better and better.

EXERCISE: Letting Go As you read this exercise, take a deep breath, and as you exhale, allow the tension to leave your body. Let your scalp, forehead, and face relax. Your head need not be tense in order for you to read. Let your tongue, throat, and shoulders relax. Let your back, abdomen, and pelvis relax. Let your breathing be at peace as you relax your legs and feet. Can you feel a noticeable change in your body since you started reading the previous paragraph? In this relaxed, comfortable position, say to yourself, “I am willing to let go. I release. I let go. I release all tension. I release all fear. I release all anger. I release all guilt. I release all sadness. I let go of old limitations. I let go, and I am at peace. I am at peace with myself. I am at peace with the process of life. I am safe.” Go over this exercise two or three times. Repeat it whenever thoughts of difficulty come up. It takes a little practice for the routine to become a part of you. Once you’re familiar with this exercise, you can do it anywhere at any time. You will be able to relax completely in any situation.

Excerpt taken from Experience Your Good Now

When you do meditation and visualisation on a daily basis you are able to bring a state of serenity and calmness into your being. This permeates through to the rest of your life and you are able to live in a wonderful state of tranquillity with an inner strength that will enable you to deal with and cope with any challenges or issues that you might encounter on your life path. When you live in a state of serenity your aura is calm and smooth and the Angels and Beings of Light are then able to connect to you easily and assist you wherever needed. If you are not in a state of serenity your aura becomes turbulent and the Angels and Beings of Light are then not able to connect to you and are therefore unable to assist you as you would like them to. Get into the habit of spending some time each day in quietness and solitude and just allow yourself to be. In this way you will change your life for the better enabling you to live in peace and tranquillity with a wonderful connection to the Angels and Beings of Light!

Article by Penni du Plessis of Divine Space Have you heard that we now have the potential to anchor a new 5th dimensional reality into our body and our lives? To explain this a little fuller, let me firstly give you some comparisons between the 3rd and 5th dimensions and how they affect our ‘Time’ management.

In the 3rd dimension time was a linear reality. Things happened sequentially, as in past, present and future. What we focused on affected us too. So when we focus on the past, and hold onto memories, grudges or pain that may have happened in the past, this usually kept us in a sense of regret, pain or depression (especially when we obsess about the traumas of the past rather than the times where we were truly joyful and excited). When focusing on the future, this adds so much stress to our lives, as we constantly set up expectations that we are striving towards.

What is interesting is that added to this, we find that our thoughts have also been sequential. Whatever worked for us in the 3rd dimension, became habit forming. So if an obstacle or problem arose, we would go back to over analysing it, together with using all the same old tools that we used to use to ease the situation. For some of us these tools were our sense of discernment and problem solving, maybe choosing a positive outlook, or confronting the person head-on. All of these come from the head though, and were determined by Conscious Life Magazine

what worked in that situation in the past…. and in the 5th dimension this will no longer work for us. In the 5th dimension time is like a spiral (which we won’t truly understand until we have been in it for a while), however the way forward from this moment on – is to link the head and the heart to everything that we do. Just adjusting our thoughts and thinking are not enough to support us… BUT if we add the dynamic of head and heart together – we have the potential to create magic. How would we do this you may ask? Firstly you have to open your heart fully – and all the time. So yes, be positive, focus on what makes you feel light and right, and then connect with your heart – loving the person, the environment, the situation and the experiences – even if they are difficult. If you love the lesson behind it, it will dissipate with ease. Resist it – and it anchors firmly and creates more of the same. We will also need to work with the brain in a whole new way, and when we do – it opens up new neural pathways and starts creating new possibilities. Thank goodness for the Access Bars work that I do – as I can feel how it has already supported this process.

rhythmic beats of the music – almost feeling the patterns. Secondly, try finding that stillness of the mind with your eyes open instead of closed, and be aware of those patterns in the light bouncing off the leaves, the play of light and shadow and the movement of the leaves moving in the breeze; and connect them to the rhythms of the sound… and simply let go and be….

What if… in this space you are more receptive to receiving; and that the ideas that come to you will come from non-linear time – which is so different from having thoughts rule your mind. I dare you to try this for a month, and let me know what opens up for you. We are all finding our way in this new world… and need to be able to support each other in the process. Find me on facebook and let’s share our experiences with each other and the world. If you are looking for more tangible ways of doing this in a group space – please join us on the Blue and Indigo day in May – where we will be exploring these tools and others together. I look forward to our sharing

To help you understand this more fully, think of how you have been meditating in the past. Most of us have been working hard at emptying the mind and trying to find that still point. Has this worked for you? Mostly we spend the time judging ourselves for not being able to do this sufficiently. (Which is all a mind thing). What if this little ritual could change everything for you. Anoint your head and heart with one of the Light Matrix oils and then put on any music that makes your heart sing. The Sivananda School of Yoga was founded in 1956 by a small group in Johannesburg who were inspired by one of the greatest yogis of the twentieth century, Swami Sivananda of Muni Ki Reti, Himalayas. The School's voting members are the trustees of its property, the committee, and currently serving teachers, who serve without remuneration. Shunning all the hybrid inventions, adaptations, and variously named "yogas" which have appeared in recent decades, our teachers are faithful to authentic Yoga in the Hindu tradition: the only Yoga the Sivananda School recognises as such. The Buddhist Retreat Centre, where people of all religions, and none, come to experience peace and tranquility. How to Retreat The Buddhist Retreat Centre offers various types of retreats, ranging from those investigating Buddhist thought and philosophy, through to practice retreats where the emphasis is on meditation; as well as retreats featuring bird watching, cookery, drumming, pottery and photography. At first glance the latter might appear to be unrelated to Buddhism but even these retreats will contain some element of meditation, of mindful awareness, refracting the chosen subject matter through a Buddhist lens. People from all walks of life come to these retreats with a variety of motivations and expectations. Perhaps they want to deepen their meditation practice, to take some time out from a hectic working life; to reflect on a tense domestic situation; to consider the trajectory of their lives; to make a decision about a way forward. Maybe they just want to learn how to take a good photograph. Each person will have a different reason for going on a retreat. Different paths will have led them to this place. We all need to make an appointment with ourselves from time to time. To re-connect with who we are; to maintain balance; to recharge exhausted batteries. To make time to go on a retreat is a necessary and healthy step for anyone.

General Information The Centre has been established on an exquisite 125-hectare country estate near the village of Ixopo, KwaZuluNatal 90 kilometers south of Pietermaritzburg, one and a half hours’ drive from Durban. Set in hilly grasslands amongst dams, indigenous bush and forests, it overlooks one of the great valleys in the Umkomaas river system. CNN featured the BRC as one of the ten finest retreat centres in the world. It was awarded Natural Heritage status by President Nelson Mandela in recognition of its success in establishing indigenous vegetation on the property and providing habitats for wildlife to return, including the endangered Blue Swallow. It is a birder’s paradise with more 160 species recorded.

Walks lead to many interesting sites and viewpoints on the property, including evidence that Bushman lived there and Voortrekkers and Settlers passed through. In 2000, the BRC facilitated the founding of Woza Moya, the community-based NGO, located in Ufafa valley. It continues to support the organisation in a variety of ways.

Accommodation Fifty retreatants can be accommodated in single and twin-bedded rooms, en-suite cottages and thatched chalets overlooking the secluded valleys on the property – a short distance away from the dining room, office, library, studio and meditation hall. The Centre is justly famous for its fine lacto-ovo vegetarian cuisine which is featured in its own bestselling recipe books, Quiet Food, The Cake the Buddha Ate and Plentiful: The Big Book Of Buddha Food. The BRC menu includes organically grown vegetables and farm-baked bread.

Observances The Retreat Centre offers a tranquil environment for the study and practice of philosophy, psychology, meditation and the arts associated with Buddhist culture. The Centre therefore encourages adherence to traditional Buddhist moral principles during retreats, such as respect for all forms of life and abstinence from alcoholic drinks and hallucinogenic drugs. Noble Silence is maintained from the last meditation at night until the first session after breakfast in the morning. During some retreats, Noble Silence is maintained throughout. Pets are not allowed at the Centre. Only some retreats are suitable for children: please check with the Administrator.

Because food is an important part of your stay Meals are part of the real surprises that the Antbear Lodge has to offer where home grown cooking is part of the deal. We like to use our own home grown organic vegetables and if we haven’t got, then we lean heavily on those local providers with similar attitudes to our own. Conny and Andrew both like cooking and are up to changing just about anything to suit tastes or philosophies. Our cooking experience is in part a journal, a record of events and memories expressed in recipes. In the course of our travels we have filed away many recipes and with them images of people and places and their lives. How food tastes has much to do with the associations we make and if you would like to hear the tales of our meals we would love to tell them.

Sustainable & responsible tourism is our social responsibility and what we do to give something back to our community and environment We believe in sustainable tourism and social responsibility. We live is a spectacularly beautiful place called the Drakensberg and our standard of living here is exceptional. But around us lie contrasts of poverty and lack of development. If we are to keep our way of life then it surely follows that we must do everything in our power to contribute to the upliftment and prosperity of this rural area. We believe that the future of South Africa is linked to the prosperity of the people, and that upliftment is linked to education. And as such we have chosen to support our local primary school called Vulakani Primary School.

Help us Fight the Dog Meat Trade URGENT: Our Animal Rescue Team has identified a dog meat farm in South Korea where more than 170 dogs are in desperate need of help. Please make an urgent donation to help us rescue these dogs and save them from a brutal death. Stolen from the streets, shoved into trucks, locked in cages. Then slaughtered and sold to be eaten. This is the horrifying fate of the millions of dogs caught up in Asia’s dog meat trade. Please join the fight to shut down this brutal industry for good. With your help, we’ll shut down farms in South Korea, assist farmers as they transition to more humane livelihoods, support our local Chinese partners in intercepting dog meat traders’ trucks, fund the care of confiscated and rescued animals and lobby for better laws throughout Asia.

You can help stop this cruelty. Please give today.

Act Now Please fill out the form (link) to add your name to the petition calling for vital legal protection for cats and dogs in South Korea. Conscious Life Magazine

Help us bring hope to girls without and choices to those with none. Founded in 2000 by Khanyisile Motsa, and run under her diligent care ever, Home of Hope for Girls is an autonomous, self-started initiative to provide real care for exploited, trafficked and abused children in the city of Johannesburg. It is more than just a residential shelter; it is a loving home where dignity is restored, the past is healed and the girls are given the tools to take control of their futures. Home of Hope also reaches out to the community offering the most vulnerable members support, practical help and a lifeline.

The Background to Home of Hope An estimated 10,000 children are prostitutes in Johannesburg and this figure is increasing. When Khanyisile Motsa relocated to Hillbrow she was shocked to observe girls as young as nine working as prostitutes and selling drugs on the streets at night. The truth about these forgotten children is: • • • • • •

Criminals pay agents to recruit children They usually target often orphans or/and those from very disadvantaged rural communities Victims are trafficked or seduced to leave with lies about a life in the city Their IDs are frequently taken from them to make escape and identification difficult Their IDs are often sold on the black market ‘Owned’ by their exploiters they are prostituted, abused, made to sell drugs

PAWS R US (SA) is looking for INVESTORS – help us BUILD THE DREAM of our “HAPPY PLACE”! After 6 years in animal welfare/rescue, PAWS R US (SA) has moved into the LINBER KENNELS facility out in the Tarlton area, JHB. It is time to spread our wings, create a permanent home, and contribute more effectively to both the cause and effects linked to animal welfare/rescue in SA. Our dream is to build the LINBER KENNELS facility into a top-notch rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming haven for rescue dogs. We also want to establish a home-base for our EDUCATION campaigns, so that we can work with the youth in returning to the core value of COMPASSION and RESPECT for Self and All Life. To make this dream a reality, we need to BUY the LINBER KENNELS site. And to get that done, we need to find INVESTORS and PARTNERS who want to contribute to something greater than themselves, and help make a real, immediate and practical difference in a world that has lost its way. The PAWS R US (SA) TRUST has been created as a legal entity – and we now look to spread the net open wide and “go on the hunt” for kindred spirits who want to help build something GOOD. We need INVESTORS of the HEART and MIND – those who want to protect the vulnerable, educate the youth of tomorrow, and know that their investment has directly uplifted lives and communities. CONTACT: For all enquiries and details related to this search for INVESTORS, and the implications for each INVESTOR within the Trust, please email us on woof@pawsrus.co.za

Save the Children believes every child deserves a future. In South Africa and around the world, we work every day to give children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. When crisis strikes, and children are most vulnerable, we are always among the first to respond and the last to leave. We ensure children’s unique needs are met and their voices are heard. We deliver lasting results for millions of children, including those hardest to reach. We do whatever it takes for children – every day and in times of crisis – transforming their lives and the future we share.

We need your help to ensure that no child is left behind. In a tough funding environment, we have ensured we have multiple avenues of funding and are proud to have 11,000 generous individual donors contributing monthly. We will continue to be innovative in securing funding to enable us to reach more children and will work on increasing unrestricted and consistent funding streams. You can help us make a difference. Even just by becoming aware of our work by reading our annual report. To download and read the full annual report, click here.

Help us do whatever it takes to save the children.

Education The quality of education in the foundation years has a lasting impact and we are working hard to ensure that every child receives quality basic education.

Child Protection South Africa is marked by high levels of violence and exploitation of children in places where they should be safe. All children should thrive in a safe environment.

Health & Nutrition No child under the age of 5 should die from preventable disease and all our children deserve long-term good health.

Children’s Rights Insufficient recources prevent children from achieving their rights as enshrined in the South African Constitution. We are campaigning for a strengthened childrights system

One in Every Four Children Being Robbed of Their Childhood One in every four children being robbed of their childhood, new report from Save the Children finds One quarter of the world's children are being denied a childhood, a new report from Save the Children has revealed. The report includes a global index ranking the places where childhood is most and least threatened. Launched to coincide with International Children's Day, the Stolen Childhoods report has found that at least 700 million children—and possibly hundreds of millions more—have had the promise of a full childhood brought to an early end.

The reasons vary from extreme violence and conflict, often driving families from their homes; early marriage and pregnancy; child labour, poor health and not being able to go to school. In South Africa, the high levels of child homicide and extreme violence against children is the most concerning indicator.
