Letter from the Owner Hello Mommies and Daddies Since I am cutting teeth all over the show, Nanna thought it is time I cut a few teeth on ‘my’ magazine as well... just to gain the experience of being a big girl editor and to see why she is having so much fun creating each month’s magazines. Personally, I love the colourful pictures. I have suggested to Nanna that we start writing some of our articles and stories in Afrikaans, it is a language I am learning along with English and a smidgen of Zulu. Wow, imagine we could do the magazine in all of our national languages! Just a bit about me, I am 15 months old, a happy little girl with enough energy to light up a city. I love food and enjoy picking and eating the little ripe red tomatoes in the garden. I also love my vegetables and big people think I am strange ‘cos I eat cucumber and spinach. Green is a good colour. Musically, I am well ‘tuned in’ and love to waggle my nappy to the beat of Bob. I am quite partial to rock music, just like my daddy was. I like South African music a lot, because it’s proudly OURS! We always have music playing at home and in the car and usually I hum myself to sleep. Much love

NEWBERRY HOUSE MONTESSORI SCHOOL, LOURENSFORD ESTATE, SOMERSET WEST

Take the Montessori journey with us‌

As a school founded on the Montessori ideals, we at Newberry House believe that every person deserves respect. We expect students and staff to demonstrate kindness, courtesy, and respect toward the school and fellow students, parents, teachers and staff. The goal of all Montessori education is to establish safe, warm, caring environments within which to teach students positive and appropriate ways to handle situations. Our focus lies on assisting students in developing a strong sense of self-discipline, self-reliance, love of learning, contribution to society, sustainable living, responsibility and courtesy.

NEWBERRY HOUSE Toddler (18 months-3 yrs) At Newberry House we approach every day with a sense of imagination, innovation and fun, in a carefully planned and stimulating “hands on environment, which will help our children to develop an excellent foundation for creative learning to support their physical, emotional, social and cognitive development.

The toddler classroom offers very young children a unique time of self-development in a tender atmosphere of special understanding, respect and support. The environment is unique in that it provides a very specific structure which fulfils the social, physical, emotional and psychological needs of each child.

Toddlers are given opportunities to work in the development of language skill, art, music, sensory development and practical life. The practical life area is particularly emphasized as the activities in this area give children the chance to develop skills to care for themselves and their environment. Each child becomes grounded in reality, building the child's selfesteem is the ultimate goal and this is accomplished through repeated successes with these activities. NEWBERRY HOUSE Pre-Primary (3-6yrs): The Montessori classroom is a "living room" for children. Children choose their activities from open shelves with self-correcting materials and work in distinct work areas - on tables or on rugs on the floor. Over a period of time, the children develop into a "normalized community" working with high concentration and few interruptions. The classroom includes practical life exercises which enhance the development of task organization and cognitive order through care of self, care of the environment, exercises of grace and courtesy, and refinement of physical movement and coordination.

The child is also presented with basic reading and writing, language, maths, geography, history, life sciences, music, and art and movement education.

NEWBERRY HOUSE Junior and Senior Primary (6-12 yrs):

The environment builds on the pre-primary experience, reflects a new stage of development and offers an integration of the arts, sciences, geography, history and language that evokes the imagination and abstraction of the Primary child and includes the presentation of knowledge, as a part of a large scale narrative which unfolds the origins of the earth, of life, of human communities (agricultural and urban), of empires and of modern history, always in the context of the inter-relatedness of life.

Children in the 6-12 age groups are interested in their cultural environment. They are constantly asking questions about how things work and why other things are as they are. They need to be given the facts; their questions need to be answered. Children in the primary class do a lot of project work, either in groups or on their own. They choose topics that interest them and research and write the projects themselves.

NEWBERRY HOUSE Middle School (12-15 yrs): Erdkinder is the Montessori answer to adolescence, which is adopted by our Middle School. The goal of Erdkinder (German for Earth-Children) is to produce adults who are equipped with the confidence in themselves and actual skills to live in the real world. At Newberry House Middle School the children learn by doing; they learn the basics to run a household, run a small business, manage a ‘small-holding/garden for profit’ and these tasks are integrated within the academic field by budgeting (Maths), planning (Economics), mapping (Geography) gardening (Science), Field Trips, and working in their community (Social Science) to name but a few.. Our goal at Newberry House Middle School is eventually to provide a full boarding school program to allow the true essence of the Erdkinder project to flourish.

NEWBERRY HOUSE High School (15-18+ yrs): The faculty and staff of Newberry House Montessori High School will be committed to helping develop students into kind, thoughtful, intelligent and inclusive human beings who contribute to the stewardship of our communities and our planet. We will offer an academic program that marries academic concepts with real-world experiences to help students appreciate their role in our society. Students will also be stimulated creatively through a strong fine arts program that includes drama, visual arts and music. We at Newberry House Middle School and High School have chosen to implement the Cambridge system because it provides us with flexibility and globally recognised quality; it works in similar 3-year cycles as does Montessori and the Child can progress at his or own level/speed/ability. Cambridge IGCSE is the world's most popular international curriculum for 14 - 16 year olds. It develops successful students, giving them excellent preparation for their next steps in education. Cambridge IGCSE is recognised by universities and employers worldwide.

Montessori Builds Innovators By Andrew McAfee | 9:56 AM July 25, 2011

There are strident disagreements these days over every aspect of American educational policy, except for one. Everyone thinks it would be great if we could better teach students how to innovate. So shouldn't we be paying a great deal of attention to the educational method that produced, among others, Larry Page, Sergei Brin, Jeff Bezos, Jimmy Wales, Peter Drucker, Julia Child, David Blaine, and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs? They were all students in Montessori schools. According to a Wall Street Journal article by Peter Sims, there's a "Montessori Mafia" among the creative elite. So maybe there's something to the method Italian physician Maria Montessori came up with around the turn of the 20th century. The cornerstones of this method, according to Wales's brainchild Wikipedia, are: • mixed-age classrooms, with classrooms for children aged 2½-or-3 to 6 by far the most common, • student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options, • uninterrupted blocks of work time, • a Constructivist or "discovery" model, in which students learn concepts from working with materials, rather than by direct instruction, and • specialized educational materials developed by Montessori and her collaborators. That list rings true to me. I was a Montessori student in northwestern Indiana from a very early age through third grade, which was as high as the school went at that time. The teachers were an earnest group of the biggest hippies that could be found in small-town Hoosierland in the 1970s, and they gave us a lot of room to explore stuff that we found interesting.

For me this included the beads Maria and her colleagues came up with to teach us about numbers. No matter how young you are, after you see five beads on a wire next to 25 arranged in a square and 125 in a cube, you have a grasp of 5^2 and 5^3 that doesn't leave you. And after you hold the five-cube in one hand and the ten-cube in another, the power of taking something to the third power becomes very real. One is eight times as heavy as the other! The parents of Larry, Sergei, Jimmy, Jeff, and all the others gave their kids good genes and nurtured them in many other ways beyond sending them to Montessori (I know that's true in my case). But research indicates that Montessori methods work even for disadvantaged kids who are randomly selected to attend (although this might not be the best idea for dental school). And as far as I can tell from my quick glance at the studies, Montessori kids don't do worse than their more classically educated peers on standardized tests. So why do we spend so much time on rote learning and teaching to the test? When I got too old for my Montessori school and went to public school in fourth grade, I felt like I'd been sent to the Gulag. I have to sit in this desk? All day? We're going to divide the day into hour-long chunks and do only one thing during each chunk? Am I on Candid Camera? Am I Job? I'm really glad to learn that Montessori methods are entering public schools. And I look forward to more research on the benefits and drawbacks of this educational approach. Until it convinces me otherwise, I'm going to continue to believe in Montessori and recommend it to parents. The main thing I learned there is that the world is a really interesting place, and one that should be explored. Can there be any better foundation for an innovator in training? Louise L. Hay .

The thoughts we choose to think are the tools we use to paint the canvas of our lives." - Louise L. Hay

Recently dubbed "the closest thing to a living saint" by the Australian media, Louise Hay is also known as one of the founders of the self-help movement. Her first book, Heal Your Body, was published in 1976, long before it was fashionable to discuss the connection between the mind and body. Revised and expanded in 1988, this bestselling book introduced Louise's concepts to people in 30 different countries and 23 different languages throughout the world. Through her healing techniques and positive philosophy, millions have learned how to create more of what they want in their lives, including more wellness in their bodies, minds and spirits. Her own personal philosophy was forged from her tormented upbringing. Her childhood was unstable and impoverished, and her teen years were marked by abuse. Louise ran away from home and ended up in New York City, where she became a model and married a prosperous businessperson. Although it appeared that her life had turned around, it was not until the marriage ended 14 years later that her healing really began. Louise started what would become her life's work in New York City in 1970. She attended meetings at the Church of Religious Science and began training in the Ministerial Program. She became a popular speaker at the church, and soon found herself counseling clients. This work quickly blossomed into a full-time career. After several years, she compiled a reference guide detailing the mental causes of physical ailments, and developed positive thought patterns for reversing illness and creating health. This compilation was the basis for Heal Your Body, also known affectionately as "the little blue book." She began traveling throughout the United States, lecturing and facilitating workshops on loving ourselves and healing our lives. Louise was able to put her philosophies into practice when she was diagnosed with cancer. She considered the alternatives to surgery and drugs and instead developed an intensive program of affirmations, visualization, nutritional cleansing and psychotherapy. Within six months, she was completely healed of cancer. In 1980, Louise moved back to her native Southern California. It was here that Louise began putting her workshop methods on paper and in 1984, her new book, You Can Heal Your Life, was published. In it, Louise explains how our beliefs and ideas about ourselves are often the cause of our emotional problems and physical maladies and how, by using certain tools, we can change our thinking and our lives for the better. You Can Heal Your Life reached the New York Times bestseller list and remained on it for 12 consecutive weeks. Over three million copies of You Can Heal Your Life have been sold in 30 countries throughout the world.

In 1985, Louise began her famous support group, "The Hayride," with six men diagnosed with AIDS. By 1988, the group had grown to a weekly gathering of 800 people and had moved to an auditorium in Santa Monica. Once again, Louise had started a movement of love and support long before people began to wear red ribbons in their lapels. It was during this time that she wrote The AIDS Book: Creating a Positive Approach, based on her experiences with this powerful group. Louise now heads Hay House, a successful publishing company. What began as a small venture in the living room of her home has turned into a prosperous corporation that has sold over ten million books and tapes since its inception. Hay House authors include many notables in the self-help movement, including Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dr. Barbara De Angelis, Dr. Joan Borysenko and Stuart Wilde, among others. The Hay Foundation and the Louise L. Hay Charitable Fund are two nonprofit organizations established by Louise, which support many diverse organizations including those dealing with AIDS, battered women and other disadvantaged individuals in our society. Louise's healing message has been the subject of many newspapers and magazine articles. She has appeared on television around the world, and her monthly column, "Dear Louise," appears in over 50 publications in the United States, Canada, Australia, Spain and Argentina. Currently, Louise is devoting time to women's issues and enjoying her garden at her home in San Diego, California. Building a future in which humans live in harmony with nature

Rhino Conservation WWF is one of the world's largest and most respected independent conservation organisations, with almost 5 million supporters and a global network active in over 100 countries. More than 75% of all the world's rhino today are found in South Africa. WWF urges all South Africans to be proud of our rhinos - our natural heritage. Rhinos have ranged far and wide across Africa and formed a magnificent part of our cultural and natural heritage for thousands of years. Long before becoming part of the iconic Big Five, rhinos were revered by African royalty as epitomised by the Golden Rhino buried with the King of Mapungubwe 800 years ago. South Africans are rightly proud of their rhino history and the critical role they played in the remarkable recovery of white rhino numbers over the last century. Today three out of every four rhinos alive are found in this one country. Yet, rhino deaths from poaching continue to rise. As of 16 October 2012, 455 rhinos have been illegally killed for their horns this year. Rhino numbers continue to grow as more are born than are dying – even when poaching mortalities are taken into account. However, we are coming ever closer to the danger zone where populations start to decline. WWF urges all South Africans to play a part in rhino protection at this pivotal point in their future. Report threats to rhinos or any signs of suspicious behaviour on the Department of Environmental Affairs Rhino Hotline: 0800 205 005. www.wwf.org.za

Kid’s Bedrooms By Linda Navon

A child’s bedroom should be its own space to play, do homework, read and learn the responsibility of keeping it tidy. As a youngster I had the ‘privilege’ of sharing with my brother and sister... gee how we used to draw those imaginary lines across the bedroom to demarcate where we were allowed to step! Then ‘oh joy’ my older sister moved out. By then I was a teenager and had posters of every conceivable pop band covering my walls, door, cupboards and ceiling – much to my mother’s dismay! Either way, whether you children need to share a bedroom or have their own rooms, there are so many gorgeous and innovative options available. I hope you enjoy the following pics. I have listed a couple of companies who will be delighted to jazz up your bedrooms.

CHANGE - THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LIFE Who Moved My Cheese? is the story of four characters living in a "Maze" who face unexpected change when they discover their "Cheese" has disappeared. Sniff and Scurry, who are mice, and Hem and Haw, little people the size of mice, each adapt to change in their "Maze" differently. In fact, one doesn't adapt at all...

This timeless allegory reveals profound truths to individuals and organizations dealing with change. We each live in a "Maze", a metaphor for the companies or organizations we work with, the communities we live in, the families we love places where we look for the things we want in life, "Cheese". It may be an enjoyable career, loving relationships, wealth, or spiritual peace of mind. With time and experience, one character eventually succeeds and even prospers from the change in his "Maze. In an effort to share what he has learned along the way, he records his personal discoveries on the maze walls, the "Handwriting on the Wall". Likewise, when we begin to see the "writing on the wall", we discover the simplicity and necessity of adapting to change.

Full of modern day insight, the story of Who Moved My Cheese? invites individuals and organizations to enjoy less stress and more success by learning to deal with the inevitable change.

Founder of Vibrant Health

Mark Timon is the founder of and formulator for Vibrant Health, holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado, and a Master’s degree in biology, emphasis in Clinical Nutrition, from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut. Mark Timon founded Vibrant Health and moved away from formulating for other companies because he found that what he had formulated did not match the final product, as companies so often decided to go for cheaper ingredients and vitamin blends. He also found that many of the supplements that ended up on the shelf did not have full label disclosure. “You have our respect. You are the person we serve. You deserve to know precisely what is in each dietary supplement you buy. That is why you will find NO misleading proprietary blends in any Vibrant Health product. We’ve used full disclosure labelling since 1976, and always will. It’s your right to know! ” Mark Timon

Vibrant Health seeks to assist through supplemental nutrition the healing of illness and the establishment of optimum health, as well as to design and market the most efficacious Nutritional Food Supplements for the benefit of all men, women and children.

Vibrant Health only source the finest materials they can find, putting quality ahead of their cost. They are constantly on the lookout for better materials with the aim of designing evolutionary formulas to make sure they stay ahead of the times. “There’s no doubt that we think differently from the rest of the nutrition industry. We don’t wish to be seen as a traditional nutraceutical brand. We strive to be seen as a brand built “on” science and “by” the efficacy of our formulations. And that’s why we must use these principles and practices as lampposts to guide our decisions and to keep us focused on our Mission.” Mark Timon Vibrant Health does not presume that any dietary supplement designed today will remain the best into an endless future. For that reason, every Vibrant Health product is expected to change as new discoveries in science come to light, and as new raw materials become available. Vibrant Health products are dynamic, designed to stay at the forefront of nutritional science. Vibrant Health’s products provide supplemental nutrition that supports human biochemistry. The steady decline in trace nutrient value of our fresh foods has, in the opinion of Vibrant Health, established a mandate for supplemental nutrition. We believe supplemental nutrition is no longer an option; it is instead a necessity if one hopes to achieve robust and vibrant health.

Why Choose Vibrant Health?

We use whole food supplements, designed for the body, the way nature intended Vibrant Health nutritional supplements are based on whole food nutrition, as Mark believes that we were designed to absorb our nutrients from food, as opposed to “nature identical” nutraceuticals. Many of the chemical supplements on the market are not recognised or absorbed well in the body. The best supplements are whole food supplements obtained by taking vitamin rich plants and capturing the vitamin complex in a chemical free process, to retain the vitamin’s function and nutrient integrity. The basic principle that explains the difference between a synthetic vitamin and whole food vitamin is that when you isolate a nutrient or vitamin out of the food complex within which it is naturally found and where it is inseparably bound to thousands of known and unknown food factors (enzymes, proteins, chaperones, glyconutrients etc.) it is no longer beneficial to life. Ascorbic acid is not vitamin C, just like Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E and Ketinoic acid is not vitamin A. Vitamins are NOT individual molecular compounds – they are biological complexes; multi-step biochemical interactions whose action depends on many factors. Vitamin activity ONLY takes place when all co-factors or components of the entire vitamin complex are present and working together as found in organic food.

THE WELEDA FARM By Linda Navon The story begins with Elizabeth, a descendant of the 1820 Settlers, and her Dutch born husband, Guy Wertheim Aymes. They met at an organic soil association meeting 57 years ago. Guy (pronounced ‘Gee’) had a Bachelor of Economics from Rotterdam in Holland, and Elizabeth was studying at Boschetto Agricultural College in Harrismith.’ They were approached to start a laboratory here in South Africa to make the Weleda products, which they did in the city centre of Johannesburg. Dr Rudolph Steiner had named these products ‘Weleda’ who is in fact the Goddess of Health. Elizabeth was instrumental starting the Michael Mount Waldorf School in Bryanston and even assisted in making some of the first furniture. What a legend. Elizabeth is intense and graphic as she recalls details of how their business grew from a small laboratory in the city centre of Johannesburg, to the ‘empire’ that we know today. She laughs as she tells us how, when their daughter Chamilla was born, her destiny of taking over the business was cast in stone; pretty much like a queen will pass her crown on to her daughter!

We will cover our meeting with the exceptional Chamilla Sanua, the Weleda Pharmacies, and the Naturally-Yours Wellness Centre, in our next edition. ‘Back to the farm’ as they say in the Classics. On invitation, my colleague Clint and I visited the Weleda Dairy Farm out in the Hekpoort area, just a little way past the Hartebeespoort Dam for the Easter weekend. We got a hearty welcome from Elizabeth who is now living her dream as a dairy farm owner. She takes much pride in showing us around the farm, naming the types of trees and plants, and discussing the plans for the further development of the land. The 25-hectare property comprises fruit trees, various grazing fields, a couple of homes, two self-catering cottages, and the dairy, all of which overlook a well-stocked dam and the beautiful Magaliesburg Mountain range. In the late afternoon, we are taken on a tour of the dairy and get to watch the milking session ‘in action’. Not only were we introduced to all the staff but to each of the cows who have been personally named by Elizabeth.

The dairy is run meticulously and smoothly, everything is measured and accounted for in the old-fashioned way with all details being recorded in a ‘dinkum’ hard cover ledger. No ‘crashing’ computer for this lady. In her words ‘a web is something that spiders make’! All the fresh dairy products are guaranteed to contain no growth hormones, oestrogen or antibiotics. The organic range of milk, cottage cheese, cream and yogurt are high in nutritional value and are delicious! These are available for sale at the farm, selected stores and the Weleda pharmacies. Being a total dairy lover myself, I look forward to my next visit where I shall quietly disappear to ‘sample’ the cottage cheese and more yogurts whilst waiting for the cows to come home. Thank you once again Elizabeth, for your hospitality and very interesting company, and ‘off the wall’ sense of humour. Schools are welcome to organize a trip to Weleda Farm to show the children the workings of a dairy farm. Contact Weleda Farm Elizabeth (014) 576-1150 or 083 226 7835

Natural Treatment for Throat Infections in Children By Chamilla Sanua (B. Pharm cum laude) ______________________________________________________________________________ So what is a throat infection? Symptoms may include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, redness, hoarseness and coughing. The throat becomes inflamed which may result in tonsillitis. Inflammation is commonly caused by bacteria, most commonly Streptococcus but may have a viral nature. The Chinese would generally look at the color coating of the tongue and if it is yellow it would most probably be a bacterial infection and if white, viral in nature. In general, the more often a child has tonsillitis the more difficult it is to cure. Each time the tonsils become inflamed and infected scar tissue accumulates. Tonsils play an important role in the proper functioning of the immune system and should not be removed unless absolutely necessary. The throat is one of the first lines of defense of the body and will attempt to prevent the infection from moving into the chest to cause asthma, bronchitis or pneumonia. From a natural perspective there are many ways to improve the defense force of the body to overcome the infection. Homeopathic medicine works wonders for throat infections. Your Weleda supplier will advise according to symptoms. Children should have a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables as more than 50 % of the immune system is situated in the colon. Reduce refined carbohydrates and eliminate dairy and wheat for a while. There is a new theory that many children have hypochlorhydria (not enough hydrochloric acid) and are therefore not digesting proteins adequately. This can lead to excessive mucous production. Vitamin C in fairly high doses is often all one needs; Acerola chewables or vitamin C powder is probably most easy to give to children. Supplement with an immune boosting preparation such as olive leaf extract, Echinacea, Astragalis or Bio-Strath. Calcium can be found in products like Urticalcin from Bioforce. Zinc or Echinacea lozenges work locally, colloidal silver is good to spray onto the tonsils or sore throat or Tea Tree can also be used as a gargle. Children that are chronically ill are often short of Iron and may become anemic. Floradix or Spatone are excellent forms of iron which is used in the body to protect the immune system. So healthy food, eliminating mucous forming foods, supporting the immune system by supporting the colon and the killer cells and making sure all stress is removed from the child as far as possible, and most importantly loving your child to bits, will make for a happy healthy child.

Guest Post: Real Actual Doctor By The Honest Toddler This post is for Adults. If you spend half your paycheck on Omega 3s, keep reading. Today‟s post is by a guest: a real actual doctor with glasses just like the title says. This doctor is sitting right next to me wearing one of those long white dress shirts with two pockets. You can‟t see the doctor because you‟re not here but that doesn‟t mean you should go around calling people liars. Anyway it takes one to know one so what does that say about you. This flesh and blood non hologram doctor decided to visit my office that I have but didn‟t mention before because it doesn‟t matter (stop with the questions this is why very few people like you). 100% of parents believe that they are breathing encyclopedias with full knowledge. “This is a lie,” said the doctor, “You are so prideful.” Read the doctor‟s post below to learn more about your gaps in wisdom. Love, HT The Fifth Trimester by a respected doctor with certificates Hello parent! First, I‟m not your friend. Cancel all future appointments and buy your toddler an iPad. Also, I tested your child‟s blood levels and found that he/she (can‟t remember) is dangerously low in caramel. You cannot trust anything I say but for the next few minutes, I‟ve committed myself to the truth. In a human pregnancy there are three trimesters. The first is when a fish egg is just doing its thing deep inside your blood. The second is when the fish egg turns on you and starts taking vitamins from your bones. The third is when the fish converts to people and pushes its way past your private parts to join the world. Now you have a baby. Hopefully this is your first and only one. Nobody needs two (or three or four stop being crazy). Many think that there is a fourth trimester and infants need special attention. Hold on to your almond milk- you‟re gross- because I have news!

THERE IS A TRIMESTER NUMBER FIVE. NEW DISCOVERY. You heard it right from me, a professional with awards. Just because your toddler is wicked talented at everything doesn‟t mean she‟s ready to walk a lot, sleep in a room by herself, or pick papers off of the floor even if she scattered them by accident. Confused about this proven logic? Here are some examples of tasks that are too much for someone in their fifth trimester:  Talking: Saying “thank you” or “hello” to people can cause pain of the mouth.  Eating unassisted: Young gifted children in their fifth trimester need to be fed while sitting in your lap and leaning their head against your chest for moral support.  Being grateful: Ouch!  Alone time: Contrary to popular belief, there is never a wrong time to hold hands. Get into it.  Feet on the floor: In cultures where they care about children, they usually carry their young. It‟s up to you to decide how you want to be remembered. Much like fire, toddlers can be your joy or destroy your life/personal belongings. This has nothing to do with them but everything to do with your attitude. So many doctors agree with everything I‟ve just said. All of them actually. You can go behind my back and ask them or for once in your life trust somebody. If you do ask and they say no, they‟re just being sarcastic because it‟s so obvious. They also respect you less so congrats on making that happen. Because I went to a very expensive medical school to learn how to spread that long sheet of white paper for butts, this consultation is not free. You send me some vending machine snacks and we can call this even. „Doctors Signature‟ www.thehonesttoddler.com

What to Know Before You Hang a Flat Screen TV If you've ever been to Graceland, you've undoubtedly seen the "TV room" with its three televisions built into the wall. Back in the 60s you had to be the King of Rock n' Roll to have such a groovy setup. Now you can buy everything you need to do this while shopping for groceries at the local discount warehouse. Not only that, your wall-hung TV can do something Elvis never could: It can move. Hanging a flat screen TV really is no big deal, but before you get lost in dreams of kicking back on your overstuffed sectional to catch some Greys Anatomy reruns, there are a few important considerations to making sure you get the installation right. Mounting Hardware The big "hanger" that actually mounts your set to the wall is a TV mounting bracket. These can range in price but you absolutely have to have one. Do not try to hang your TV with anything else. There are three basic types of TV mounting brackets: flush-mount, tilting, and full-motion. Flush-mount tends to be the slimmest and can get your TV within 1/2 inch or so of the wall. However, they don't allow for any movement. Tilting brackets let you tilt the TV down a limited amount; they don't tilt upward from 90 degrees. This is an ok option if you watch from both seated and standing positions (or from another room) and don't need side-to-side movement. Fullmotion brackets tilt down as well as rotate from side to side— some up to 90 degrees. They also pull out from the wall, which is required for side rotation. TV Location LCD screens have gotten a lot better over the years regarding viewing angle, but they still look best when viewed straight on. That means your viewing position should dictate where the TV goes (if the best spot isn't good Feng Shui, you'll have to take that up with your spiritual advisor). Most people prefer to watch TV at eye level so that the middle or upper third of the screen is level with your eyeballs when you're in your favourite chair. A set that's too low can feel like a back-row seat at a

multiplex theatre, while having it too high is like watching TV at an airport. The right mounting bracket makes the all-important placement question a lot easier to answer. And there's one more thing on location: You have to mount the bracket into two wall studs, or at least one stud and heavy-duty hollow-wall anchors (like toggle bolts), which is recommended for small TVs only. Use a stud finder or a nail and hammer to find and mark the studs before settling on a final mounting location. Cables and Connectivity I wouldn't dare attempt to advise anyone on the latest equipment for TV connectivity and controls. There are plenty of better sources for that, such a sales staffer at a home electronics store or an electrician. However, no matter what you use for hook-ups, you will have to run some cables. At the very least, the TV will need a power cord and a connecting cable from an A/V receiver or an HDMI switcher. Huh? Don't worry; you'll sort that out at the electronics store. For now, all you need to know is that a receiver or switcher allows you to plug multiple devices (DVR, cable/satellite box, audio equipment, gaming console, etc.) into one "box," then run a single HDMI cable (which carries both picture and sound) to the TV. This makes it easier to install the TV and hide the cables, and it solves the common problem of having more devices than inputs for them on the TV. Viewer Knows Best Flat screen TVs allow for installation options that Graceland's remodelers never could have dreamed of, but just because you can mount your TV almost anywhere doesn't mean you should. Keep in mind that a TV is for watching, not for fitting into a decorating scheme. Take the time to test-drive different viewing positions to make sure the placement provides a good, comfortable view as well as versatility for multiple viewing situations. Mounting a TV requires at least three people—two to hold the TV against the wall and one to watch, literally. With special thanks to Phil Schmidt who writes for Networx.com.

Dear Linda I saw your comment on our facebook page. I thought that Saddles story would be a perfect article for your magazine and help educate the public on how much damage a chain or leach can do to a puppy. That extended periods of time without mobility can cause severe damage to the muscle growth. Saddles story: Late afternoon, April 16th 2013, we found this poor mangy fellow tied on such a small chain he could hardly move. Covered in what the vet

later described as the worse case of sarcoptic mange he had ever seen. And barely weighing 10kgs. We dipped and bathed him immediately. And started nurturing him back to health. For 2 weeks he anticipated the worse from any interaction. He was so fearful and timid, it took 4 weeks before I even knew what his bark sounded like. It has been 6 weeks and he is the friendliest little boy you could ever meet. He has gained a whopping 8.5 kgs but due to his lack of movement his muscles weren’t developed enough to hold up his current weight. He could barely move previously he was so weak, but now he struggles to move himself around at all, he needs intense hydro therapy and physiotherapy to build his muscles up.

Brain Nutrition Pump up your brainpower

________________________________________________________________ Of all the animals on the planet, humans have the largest brains in proportion to body mass ratio. Our brains are the centre of our nervous systems; they help us function and are the headquarters of our minds therefore very valid reasons to look after them. Give your family the right brain food to improve their mental, emotional and physical performance, whether at school or in the workplace. Flora Force Focus Formula, which improves memory and concentration, is an ideal supplement and it’s an invaluable study aid. It’s also recommended to treat ADD/ADHD-related problems. Focus Formula improves the circulation of oxygen to the brain, so it reduces stress-related forgetfulness and age-related memory loss. It calms the nerves, reduces hyper-excitability and has an anti-oxidant and antiinflammatory action. 1. The main fuel needed for steady concentration and the ability to focus is glucose. Choose low-GI complex carbohydrate foods found in foods such as wholegrain bread and brown rice to release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, avoiding the energy highs and lows that leave you and your children operating alternately at full-speed-ahead and becalmed. 2. Omega-3 fatty acids help the brain function at its peak. The most effective forms are salmon, trout, mackerel, sardines, pilchards and kippers – three times a week is ideal. Other sources are pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds, soya beans and nuts. Sprinkle a teaspoon of ground flaxseeds over morning cereals or toss into a stir-fry just before serving. Phospholipids assist brain function, memory and concentration. and choline helps keep cell membranes flexible, and has been shown to improve memory and concentration in older adults. You’ll find choline and other phospholids in beef liver, eggs, cauliflower, beans, tofu and nuts.

3. Vitamins boost brain vitality. B vitamins are found in leafy green vegetables, whole grains, eggs, dairy products, lean meat and nuts. Vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid can help reduce levels in the blood of homocysteine, which, if raised, can increase the chances of stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Vitamins C, D and E and the beta-carotenes contain anti-oxidants, which help to ‘clean’ the brain of damaging free radicals. Berries contain a bounty of other anti-oxidant, bio-flavonoids. Broccoli is a great source of vitamin K, which enhances cognitive function and brainpower. Minerals for mind power Boost your attention span with iron found in leafy green vegetables, raisins, soya beans, asparagus, and sunflower and sesame seeds. A lack of zinc can lead to loss of memory and thinking skills. Just a handful of pumpkin seeds a day provides the recommended daily amount of zinc. Magnesium, promotes memory and learning. Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables, seafood, honey, almonds and pecan nuts. Phosphorus to boost concentration, found in bananas, mushrooms, nuts, oats, beans and butternut squash. Potassium helps carry oxygen to the brain, appears to help prevent strokes and may even play a role in sexual arousal. Spinach, fruits (especially berries), tomatoes, mushrooms, pecan nuts, rice, Brussels sprouts. Calcium keeps your brain fit and active. Snack on nuts (especially almonds, and Brazil nuts), legumes, figs, raisins and fruits such as apricots, figs, dates, papaya and avocados. Other essential minerals to keep your brain cells popping include: Manganese - nuts, legumes, seeds, tea, whole grains and leafy green vegetables. Chromium - brewer’s yeast, whole grains. Copper - blackstrap molasses, soya beans, Brazil nuts, raisins, legumes. Iodine - seafood, kelp, beetroot. A well-balanced diet will keep your brain in tip-top condition and help avoid disease. If your diet is failing to perform, speak to your healthcare professional about taking an herbal formula and an omega-3 fatty acid supplement.

How to stay naturally healthy this winter With autumn slowly turning into winter and first flu wave spreading over Gauteng, we suddenly remember something needs to be done to boost immune system and prepare for cold months. Ideally we should be strong enough to fight cold and common viral infections easy without getting seriously sick, but the reality is that most of us are not. The stressful lifestyle of the big city – always on the run, grabbing a quick snack here and there, not sleeping and exercising enough – slowly contributes for weakening of immune system. The Body is a very complicated machine and requires proper fuel in order to function properly. Food is our main source of energy and when we constantly abuse our bodies by not providing the correct food, or not having regular rest, or keep overloading on a daily basis with toxins from various sources, the results are clear – our bodies cannot continue functioning well and we get sick. Still, there is much we can do to improve own live and health. 1. Include Superfoods into your and your family diet. This is very easy, doesn’t require drastic changes in cooking routine and doesn’t cost a fortune. • Camu Camu powder is made from South American berry and it is extremely rich in Vitamin C. It can be added to tea, juices, yogurt or simply stirred into glass of water. It has sour taste similar to lemon juice and makes very refreshing drink. Vitamin C is required by our bodies in order to fight viruses and infections and we need to supplement higher doses during winter months. Important fact about Vitamin C supplement is that one big dose won’t do much good. Human body needs supply of Vitamin C at regular intervals during the day and it doesn’t have capacity of storing the excess. • Spirulina is another unique Superfoods with its phenomenal combination of protein, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, phytonutrients & antioxidants. It is considered one of the most compete sources of nutrition. • Raw Cacao contains Magnesium and very high levels of antioxidants. It is great food and supplement providing optimum health for bones and muscles as well as having anti-depressant properties. 2. Use natural remedies. They will keep your immune system at top level and will not have side effects. • Propolis tincture is an excellent natural remedy! It is great for boosting immune system and helps with cold symptoms, including sore throat. Very easy to use: just few drops into liquid (water or juice) to be taken internally once a day. Many people report that few doses a day help a tremendously with fighting colds in just few days. • Drink plenty of organic teas – green tea, rooibos, and honey bush. Avoid processed sugar; rather use raw honey, agave or maple syrup. An old cough remedy is to drink strong basil tea (1 tablespoon dried basil into 500ml boiling water, cover and leave for 10-15min). Basil is very easy to grow – both indoors and outdoors. It is also one of the easiest herbs to find at stores. Another grandparents recipe for throat infections – mix 2-3 tablespoons of raw honey with 1teaspoon of cinnamon. Then take ½ to 1 teaspoon and slowly dissolve into the mouth every few hours. Honey has good antiseptic properties and combined with cinnamon will help with throat soreness.

3. Start juicing - making fresh juice out of various fruits and veggies is the quickest way to get nutrients. For first timers, here is a simple recipe: 2-3 green apples 1 pineapple 1 orange handful of spinach 1 stalk celery 2-3 floret of broccoli 2 kiwis 2cm chunk of ginger It will make 2-3 cups of green juice, an excellent anti-oxidant drink with plenty of live nutrients. • Keep Turmeric and Cayenne Pepper in you spice cabinet. Best is to choose organic and non-irradiated spices. Irradiation is done to fresh produce to kill bacteria and milder and prolong shelf life, but this process kills all bacteria, including the beneficial ones and destroys enzymes which are very important for metabolism. -Turmeric is known for its culinary application but is also great anti-oxidant and help easing dry cough. Sprinkle a little into tea or fresh juices and drink. -Cayenne pepper is also wonderful healing agent for blocked nose and common viral infections. May be added to food or drinks. 4. Detoxification – It is advised to be done every few months. Detoxification will help body to get rid of toxins and function better. If you have never done a detoxification, fasting will be easier to start with – just avoiding meat and dairy for a week. When using natural remedies results won’t show within 24hours like with some prescribed medicines. To strengthen immune system will take time. Using natural remedies is about dedication to change something in your lifestyle. Remember, that if you are seriously ill, you will have to go to doctor’s office. There are conditions that herbs and garlic won’t cure. Taking natural alternatives is about prevention and getting our immune system in top shape to fight back infections. Our bodies have amazing healing powers if we nourish them with proper nutrient.
