WE WELCOME YOU
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------become a city of over 30,000 in the early Dear Visitors, Welcome to Knox County, Illinois and Galesburg, the county seat. Our community has long been a regional leader in agriculture and industry. Our leadership has lent itself to a rich history that began in 1837 with the founding of our community and a manual labor college. That community became Galesburg; that college became Knox College. Our history includes Pulitzer Prize winning author Carl Sandburg. He gained fame writing about the stark realities of Chicago in the 19th century and the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Carl’s birthplace is a State Historic Site and museum that exists as a testament to his humble beginnings and as a legacy to his indelible mark on America. Galesburg was an important stop on the Underground Railroad in Illinois. A “runaway slave was considered as free from capture when within (Galesburg’s) limits as if in Canada,” according to the account of Charles C. Chapman’s History of Knox County, Illinois, published in 1878. Galesburg, due in large part to Knox College, was perhaps the principal station for runaways in Western Illinois. In the years leading up to the Civil War and emancipation, Galesburg evolved and changed. It rose from a sleepy college hamlet to a railroad town. The population exploded from just over 300 in 1850 to almost 5,000 in 1860. The population doubled again by 1870 and grew steadily to
20th century. With that boom, came architecture, industry, retail and a growing importance in the railroad industry. Today, Galesburg has one of the largest classification yard’s with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Over 160 trains a day pass through our community. All of those trains should mean a lot of whistles and rumbles. However, Galesburg is a Quiet Zone community thanks to the addition of major grade separations with the West Main Street “Don Moffitt Overpass” and the Seminary/Kellogg “Bickerdyke Overpass.” An East Main Street underpass, soon to begin construction, near downtown will silence the train whistles and make Galesburg an easy place to navigate. Galesburg is also a leading stop on Amtrak. With regular daily service to and from Chicago, as well as many points west all the way to San Francisco, Galesburg is just a train ride away. When visiting our community, stop by the Welcome Center on East Main Street. We have all the information you need for history, food, lodging, entertainment, events and much more. We are here to assist you. With exception of a few gift items, everything is free. So, welcome! Enjoy your stay and write your own history in Galesburg, Illinois. know History •Galesburg was founded by George Washington Gale, a minister of the gospel from New York state, who dreamed of establishing a manual labor college which became Knox College. A committee from New York purchased 17 acres in Knox County in 1835, and the first 25 settlers arrived in 1836. They built temporary cabins in Log City near current Lake Storey, just north of Galesburg, having decided that no log cabins were to be built inside the town limits. •Galesburg was the home of Mary Ann Bickerdyke, who provided hospital care for Union soldiers during the American Civil War. •Corpus Christi is a parish in Galesburg, which was founded by Father Joseph Costa and dates to August 4, 1885. What makes the church unique is the special relic it holds. It holds the body of St. Crescent: legend says that there are only 10 saints whose bodies are laid in churches in the United States.

ENTERTAINMENT •Those Were the Days! starring William Holden was filmed on the Knox College campus in 1940. •After the Civil War, Galesburg was the birthplace of poet, author, and historian Carl Sandburg. The site contains the cottage Sandburg was born in, a modern museum, the rock under which he and his wife Lilian are buried, and a performance venue.
History Trivia 1834 – Oldest residence in Knox County was built by William Riley. 1897 – Central Congregational Church, built in 1897 is an example of Romanesque Style architecture with unusual rose stained glass throughout. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
According to legend, it was in Galesburg in 1914 where the four Marx Brothers (Groucho, Chico, Harpo and Gummo) first received their nicknames. A fellow Vaudevillian, Art Fisher, supposedly bestowed them upon the brothers during a poker game here. Zeppo Marx received his nickname later. •George Reeves, who played Superman in a popular television series (although a native Iowan), lived here briefly as an infant with his mother, a Galesburg resident most of her life. Her homestead still stands at Broad Street.
1898 – George and Ella Lawrence of Galesburg were the designers of the Illinois State Flag. 1905 – The world's largest elm tree, known as the "Lombard" elm was acclaimed at a spread of 140 feet in diameter stood right here in Galesburg.
GALESBURG was home to the first anti-slavery society in the state of Illinois founded in 1837, and was a stop on the underground railroad.
•Held annually every September since 1972, Galesburg hosts the largest gathering of Stearman planes anywhere in the world since the end of WWII. •In 1916, the Orpheum Theatre on Kellogg Street opened its doors after a construction cost of $135,000. Built as a vaudeville house, the Orpheum hosted many early stars of stage and screen, including Jack Benny, George Burns, Harry Houdini, Al Jolson, Edgar Bergen, Fanny Brice and Blackstone, the Magician. In the 1930's the Orpheum was owned by RKO Corporations, who distributed the first of more than 20 films for Walt Disney, including "Snow White" and "Fantasia".
President •Ronald Reagan moved to Galesburg with his family at the age of five. They lived in an apartment at 1260 N. Kellogg Street and later moved across the street to 1219 N. Kellogg. He attended Silas Willard Elementary School. •Nancy (Davis) Reagan's father, Dr. Loyal Davis, a well-known Chicago neurosurgeon, was born in Galesburg. MANUFACTURING & COMMERCE TRIVIA MANUFACTURING & COMMERCE Throughout much of its history, Galesburg has been inextricably tied to the railroad industry. Local businessmen were major backers of the first railroad to connect Illinois' (then) two biggest cities – Chicago and Quincy. Also, home of a major rail sorting yard. As of the closing of the Maytag plant in the fall of 2004, BNSF Railway is once again the largest private employer in Galesburg.

Colton & Company of Galesburg for the manufacturing and compression of broom straw for brooms and the basic idea is still used today.
1893 – George Washington Gale Ferris was born and raised in Galesburg and was the inventor of the "Ferris Wheel". 1904 – The “Gale” touring car was built in Galesburg, a vintage auto, comparable to Ford's Model “T”. Had the Sears Company picked the "Gale" touring car instead of the Model "F" to be showcased in their catalog the future of the "Gale" car would have been entirely different. 1910 – The “Illinois”, a 35 horse powered touring car was known as a long low-hung roomy car, designed and built in Galesburg by the Overholt Company.
1871 – May Company of Galesburg adapted the windmill originally used in Holland to our farm standards. Over 2,000 May windmills were manufactured and sold for use in Western states. 1884 – Many bricks from Purington Paving Brick Company in East Galesburg were used in building the Panama Canal and also used in Europe.

ANTIQUE SHOPPING THE GALESBURG HISTORICAL SOCIETY has a mission to “preserve and promote Galesburg history.” Currently, the organization has displays at the Galesburg Antiques Mall Co. located on the third floor, at the top of the stairs, of 349 East Main Street. The museum takes you back in time with snapshots of Galesburg through pictures, narratives, memorabilia and artifacts pertaining to Galesburg’s past. The journey is free and open seven days a week to visitors—10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday and 12pm to 5pm on Sundays. The displays rotate and the artifacts are from various venues, some on loan, and some owned by the society. Be sure to sign the visitors’ book when you are there!

RICH HISTORY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rich history between Galesburg, Knox College Galesburg and Knox College are inseparable. A conversation about the history of this community cannot be had without talking about Knox College. They are joined for all eternity with a common origin and history. An important piece of that history is Alumni Hall, the gateway to Knox’s campus. For decades Alumni Hall sat empty and in disrepair. It loomed over the campus and Galesburg as a reminder of ages past. Today, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a renovated Alumni Hall that will stand as a monument to a community and a world class liberal arts college. In 1890, U. S. President Benjamin Harrison laid the cornerstone of Alumni Hall cementing the building in the history of Knox College. “Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Alumni Hall dominates Knox’s northern edge and with Old Main, Seymour Union and Seymour Library, completes the campus’ central quadrangle,” according to the publication Transforming Alumni Hall. Originally, Alumni Hall was meant to unite Knox’s two literary societies, Adelphi and Gnothautii. Each group raised money for their wings. The Alumni Association raised the funds for the central section. Once completed, the center section housed an auditorium that seated nearly 1000 people. It later became the Knox Library and the wings served as anything from a “Y Hut” during World War II, classrooms, bookstore and much more. By the 1990’s the building fell silent and waited patiently for 30 years for a renaissance. A dream was transformed into reality when thanks to the 700 alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff, and Galesburg community donors, gifts and pledges reached $12.5 million. Members of the Knox College Board of Trustees account for more than 60% of the total gifts raised. “130 year old buildings don’t get renovated; especially those that sat empty for 30 years.” Those are the words of Kirk
Anderson, construction manager for P. J. Hoerr of Peoria, IL. They were the contractors that deconstructed Alumni Hall and reconstructed it. It was a feat of engineering that will remain with Mr. Anderson for some time. Alumni Hall was renovated utilizing a standard that should put the project on target to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Silver rating from the U. S. Green Building Council. “Environmental sustainability and the health of building occupants were strong considerations during the Alumni Hall planning process. During interior demolition and construction, close to 95% of all material waste was recycled and reclaimed. The building’s exterior shell, in all its historic beauty, was preserved instead of demolished. Materials used in construction include FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)certified lumber, recycled steel, and many regionally-sourced materials. Floorings are low-VOC (volatile organic compound) and high recycled content.” The building’s interior space has been transformed into offices, technology centers, study rooms, Lincoln Studies Center, Alumni Relations, an atrium and the Heritage Center. The Heritage Center will be an evolving display area filled with the history of Illinois, Galesburg & Knox College. Alumni Hall is open to the public. The Heritage Center will be a place for visitors to see and learn about the History of our great community and college.

THE RAILROAD
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Railfan (noun) /reIl/fæn/ railfanning (verb) The history of the railroad in Galesburg is as old as the rail industry in America. It was by some bold maneuvering that Galesburg would benefit from railroad expansion. Being in the right place at the right time helped make it all happen. It all started with Chauncey Colton. He was in Boston buying goods for his store in Galesburg. He met two men, J. W. Grimes, a lawyer from Burlington, Iowa. Grimes would later become governor of Iowa. The other man is only remembered as Wadsworth. He was in Boston to buy goods for HIS store in Aurora.
itself is worth nothing. Combined in a single line the roads will prove a great venture.” (From Earnest Elmo Caulkins’ book – They Broke the Prairie, 1937)
All three men were very much interested in railroad endeavors. Each had their own vision of what they needed for success. Colton made the statement that would transform western Illinois. “Here we are representing three different projects, each having the same end in view; each road by
The newly formed group would meet with James F. Joy, a famed railroad builder. We would set a goal amount of $300,000 for construction, and a deadline that he would not waiver from. Stock subscriptions would raise only $250,000 for the railroad project, $50,000 short of the goal. When it

seemed the $50,000 would not be raised, Colton proclaimed he would put up $25,000 if Silas Willard would cover the remaining $25,000. Willard agreed and the Central Military Tract Railroad would become a reality. In 1854 the “Reindeer” was the first steam locomotive to arrive in Galesburg. By comparison, the first steam engine to arrive in Pittsburgh, PA was in 1851. Today, over 160 trains a day travel through Galesburg.

THE LEGACY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 2010, the Galesburg Arts Commission set about the task of raising funds and commissioning the work by Mr. Stewart, a Knox College graduate and world famous artist that has called Central Illinois home for many years. The sculpture is significant for many reasons. Not the least of which is Carl’s continued popularity in America and beyond. The collaboration of Mr. Stewart as sculptor and Hagel's Metal Fabrication of East Peoria brought us to the final 9 foot tall bronze masterpiece.

In the meantime, this masterpiece can be viewed in the showroom of the former Galesburg Nissan building on Broad & Ferris Streets. Sandburg has a companion sculpture to keep him company in the years ahead. Nellie the Nubian Goat was also sculpted by Stewart and cast in bronze. Nellie is a direct descendent of goats raised at Sandburg’s home on Connemara in Flat Rock, North Carolina. There are still Nubian goats on the farm to
“I’ve traveled here many tImes and I’m always amazed and grateful for what thIs town does for thIs poet” this day. It is said that young Carl tended and enjoyed the goats raised by his family in Galesburg. Sandburg’s biographer, Ms. Niven, began working on the book as a high school English teacher in 1970’s. Though she did not have a PhD in literature her groundbreaking work succeeded in reviving interest in this nearly forgotten poet. She went on to write biographies on Thornton Wilder, the novelistplaywright who created the perennial American stage favorites “Our Town” and “The Skin of Our Teeth;” and Edward Steichen, the photographer also known as curator of a traveling photo exhibition, “The Family of Man.” Carl Sandburg’s legacy remains in Galesburg. “I’ve traveled here many times and I’m always amazed and grateful for what this town does for this poet,” Penelope Niven said. “You hold the keys to his legacy and you keep the doors and windows open so he continues to be seen and heard and celebrated far and wide.”

Two time Pulitzer Prize winning author and poet, Carl Sandburg was the subject of acclaimed artist Lonnie Stewart’s sculpture that was presented to Galesburg on April 23, 2014. It arrived at our Welcome Center on East Main Street and was escorted in a processional to the Ameren building on Broad Street that included Mr. Stewart, Penelope Niven (Sandburg’s Biographer), members of the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association and dignitaries from the community. It was a twelve year journey from concept to completion. Pete Gorham, a Galesburg resident and historian, is a lifelong friend of Lonnie Stewart. He presented his idea for a Sandburg Statue to the Galesburg City Council in 2002.
