WELCOME TO
GALESBURG Dear Visitors, Welcome to Galesburg, the County Seat of Knox County in Illinois. We are a city of 33,000. Our historic community is 180 years old in 2017. Our community is forever tied to Knox College. Both community and college were founded by Presbyterians from upstate New York. Galesburg was home to the first anti-slavery society in Illinois, founded in 1837, and was a stop on the Underground Railroad. When runaway slaves reached Galesburg, they were considered to be as safe as if they had made it to Canada. Even though our county was divided, our city vigorously defended runaway slaves.

The city was the site of the fifth LincolnDouglas debate, on a temporary speaker’s platform attached to Knox College’s Old Main building on October 7, 1858. Knox College continues to maintain and use Old Main to this day. Lincoln framed his debate for emancipation at Knox College. An Underground Railroad Museum and Lincoln-Douglas Debate Museum were built in Knox College’s Alumni Hall after it reopened as a Leed Silver building in 2015. Galesburg was the home of Mary Ann “Mother” Bickerdyke. She was responsible for establishing 300 field hospitals during the American Civil War and served as a lawyer assisting veterans and their families with obtaining pensions after the war. On July 19, 2017, we will be celebrating Bickerdyke’s 200th birthday with an event in Standish Park in our downtown. Throughout much of its history, Galesburg has been inextricably tied to the railroad industry. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) sited major rail sorting yards here, including the first to use hump sorting. Amtrak provides two daily round trip trains to Chicago (the Carl Sandburg & the Illinois Zephyr) on the Chicago to Quincy corridor. There are two daily round trip trains (the California Zephyr & Southwest Chief) that provide service all
the way west to California. About 100,000 passengers step on to trains in Galesburg each year. Even today, Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad maintains a large hump sorting yard and diesel locomotive shop. Nearly 160 trains a day pass through Galesburg, making our community a unique mecca for Railfans from around the world. BNSF is still a major employer in the Galesburg Area. Retired railroad workers maintain the Galesburg Railroad Museum, right next to the Amtrak Depot. The museum is open April to September. Our wonderful community is easy to find along Interstate 74 & US 34. We are 3 hours from Chicago to the North & St. Louis to the South. There are two international airports, the Quad City International Airport & the Peoria International Airport within 50 minutes of Galesburg. Our own Galesburg Municipal Airport has Jet Air charter service and can accommodate small aircraft. As I mentioned above, we are an Illinois Amtrak community with twice daily service to Chicago & twice daily service to the west coast. Stop by our Welcome Center at 2163 East Main Street for all the information needed to have an enjoyable visit to our community. Our website is visitgalesburg. com. There’s a wealth of history, restaurant, lodging and event information on the site. Visit our Facebook page @gacvb & our twitter page @GalesburgCVB. When taking photos in our community please use one of these hashtags #galesburg #visitgalesburg #experiencegalesburg. We want to follow your enjoyment as you experience Galesburg and Knox County.
Conveniently located between Chicago and St. Louis and Peoria and the Quad Cities.

The Whitcomb Heritage center, located on both sides of Alumni Hall’s second floor, focuses on the historical context surrounding the Lincoln-Douglas debates. By providing these snapshots into American History, it is the goal of the exhibit to inform visitors of the historical magnitude of the Lincoln-Douglas senatorial debates. Even though Lincoln would go on to lose the Illinois Election that caused the “Great Debates of 1858,” the somewhat radical ideas he pushed would lay the basis for his presidential election. The Center features analysis of the then increasingly contentious debate over slavery, at local, regional and national
to Galesburg, Knox College
levels paired with visual representations of media and public sentiment at the time. The second half of the exhibit features insight into the Civil War and its aftermath, detailing the ramifications of the debate from the national level to historic Knox College. By juxtaposing the moral argument against slavery with challenges facing the ever-changing political and economic landscape of a nation in expansion, the exhibit showcases Lincoln’s difficulty in tackling the issue slavery. As Thomas Jefferson had said of slavery, less than 4 decades prior to the debates, “We have the wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go. Justice is in one scale, and self-preservation in the other.”

Mother Bickerdyke’s roots start in Galesburg Mary Ann “Mother” Bickerdyke was an Army Nurse during the Civil War and a lifelong advocate for veterans. She was responsible for establishing 300 field hospitals during the war and served as a lawyer assisting veterans and their families with obtaining pensions after the war. Mary lived in Galesburg at the outbreak of the Civil War. Dr. Benjamin Woodward, a surgeon with the 22nd Illinois Infantry and a friend of Bickerdyke’s, wrote home about the filthy, chaotic military hospitals at Cairo, Illinois. The letter was read aloud in their church and Galesburg’s citizens collected $500 worth of supplies and selected Bickerdyke to deliver them. Mary was described as a determined nurse who did not let anyone stand in the way of her duties. Her patients, the enlisted soldiers, referred to her as “Mother” Bickerdyke. When a surgeon questioned her authority to take some action, she replied, “On the authority of Lord God Almighty, have you anything that outranks that?” In reality, her authority came from her reputation with the Sanitary Commission and her popularity with the enlisted men. Her determination garnered the admiration of General William T. Sherman. As chief of nursing, Bickerdyke would often ignore military procedures. When General Grant’s staff complained about her behavior to General Sherman he exclaimed, “she outranks me. I can’t do a thing in the world.” This year, “Mother” Bickerdyke turns 200 years old. There will be an Ice Cream Social organized by the Galesburg Historical Society on her birthday, July 19, 2017 in Standish Park next to the Knox County Court House.
