WELCOME
WELCOME TO
GALESBURG Dear Visitors, Welcome to Knox County, Illinois and Galesburg, the county seat. Our community has long been a regional leader in agriculture and industry. Our leadership has lent itself to a rich history that began in 1837 with the founding of our community and a manual labor college. That community became Galesburg; that college became Knox College. Our history includes Pulitzer Prize winning author Carl Sandburg. He gained fame writing about the stark realities of Chicago in the 19th century and the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Carl’s birthplace is a State Historic Site and museum that exists as a testament to his humble beginnings and as a legacy to his indelible mark on America. Galesburg was an important stop on the Underground Railroad in Illinois. A “runaway slave was considered as free from capture when within (Galesburg’s) limits as if in Canada,” according to the account of Charles C. Chapman’s History of Knox County, Illinois, published in 1878. Galesburg, due in large part to Knox College, was perhaps the principal station for runaways in Western Illinois. In the years leading up to the Civil War and emancipation, Galesburg evolved and changed. It rose from a sleepy college hamlet to a railroad town. The population exploded from just over 300 in 1850 to almost 5,000 in 1860. The population doubled again by 1870 and grew steadily to become a city of over 30,000 in the early 20th century.
With that boom, came architecture, industry, retail and a growing importance in the railroad industry. Today, Galesburg has one of the largest classification yards with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Over 160 trains a day pass through our community. All of those trains should mean a lot of whistles and rumbles. However, Galesburg is a Quiet Zone community thanks to the addition of major grade separations with the West Main Street “Don Moffitt Overpass” and the Seminary/ Kellogg “Bickerdyke Overpass.” An East Main Street underpass, soon to begin construction, near downtown will silence the train whistles and make Galesburg an easy place to navigate. Galesburg is also a leading stop on Amtrak. With regular daily service to and from Chicago, as well as many points west all the way to San Francisco, Galesburg is just a train ride away. When visiting our community, stop by the Welcome Center on East Main Street. We have all the information you need for history, food, lodging, entertainment, events and much more. We are here to assist you. With exception of a few gift items, everything is free. So, welcome! Enjoy your stay and write your own history in Galesburg, Illinois.
Galesburg is conveniently located between Chicago and St. Louis and Peoria and the Quad Cities.

HISTORY OF THE BOXCAR PEOPLE BY LUZ NUNCIO SCHICK
It’s no secret that Galesburg is one of the premier historic towns in Illinois. Brick-paved streets, Victorian homes, old cemeteries, impressive historic landmark buildings—Galesburg’s got them all, revealing a surprisingly rich and diverse history. Beginning with its abolitionist founders, Galesburg has been home to many different people: pioneer farmers, fugitive slaves, Civil War heroes and heroines, inventors, railroad bosses, factory workers, muckraking journalists, and even a three-time Pulitzer prize-winning poet and Lincoln biographer. Each of these people added their own story to the greater flow of Galesburg’s history, which is why every year thousands of visitors are drawn to popular sites such as the Underground Railroad Freedom Station at Knox College, Hope Cemetery, the Galesburg Railroad Museum, and the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site. But there’s another Galesburg story that’s only now beginning to spread beyond the Mexican American families whose ancestors lived it and who have proudly celebrated it. A large boulder near the picnic shelter outside the Galesburg Railroad Museum commemorates this story. Its inscription reads: This is dedicated in memory of the Mexican railroad workers who helped build the railroad during the 1900s. The workers and their families lived in three railroad camp

railroads wherever they were needed— great railroad centers such as Chicago and Kansas City, as well as smaller operations in places like Topeka, Fort Madison, and here in Galesburg.
The story of Galesburg’s Mexican railroad workers is in fact part of a larger epic. They are among the million or so Mexican immigrants who came to the United States in the late 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. Like many European immigrants, they fled harsh conditions in their home country to make a better life in the United States. But unlike European immigrants, the Mexican railroad workers had little choice in where they might make a new home. They were transported by the
As the inscription on the boulder indicates, in Galesburg the Mexican railroad workers and their families lived in three camps, all outside the city limits at that time. Two of the camps, the Davis and the Humps, were for workers for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. The Santa Fe was for workers for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. The exact year of their arrival is lost to time— descendants of the earliest family to come and stay report that in 1908, when their ancestors arrived, other Mexican families were already in town. But the location of the camps is clear, and thanks to the commemorative boulder, it is preserved forever. And now the memories of what life was like in these camps, where the workers and their families were first housed in boxcars, are preserved forever as well. Beginning in 2010, former residents and neighbors of the railroad camps were approached by writers Will and Luz Schick and Peoria’s PBS station WTVP to share their memories for a documentary. The descendants of Galesburg’s first Mexican immigrants rose to the task, conjuring up vivid memories of the vibrant, loving community that
“This is dedicated in memory of the Mexican railroad workers who helped build the railroad during the 1900s.” Galesburg’s railroad camps existed from the 1920s into the 1950s. Unfortunately, all traces of the Humps and the Davis Camp are now gone. At the Santa Fe Camp, the railroad had replaced their boxcar homes with brick row houses, but these were razed in the 1970s, leaving only the footings of where they had stood. The space is now restricted railroad property.
developed in the camps and surrounding neighborhoods. In February 2013, “Boxcar People” premiered to a full house at Galesburg’s Orpheum Theatre and went on to be nominated for a Midwest Regional Emmy later that year. For many in Galesburg the existence of the railroad camps came as a surprise, as
did the details of day-to-day life there. Through interviews, family photographs, and home movies that are sometimes startlingly poignant, the film presents an intimate look into important aspects of the residents’ lives, such as work, school, daily chores, celebrations, Mexican traditions, military service, and the struggle for equal rights.
But just up the hill at 1256 W. Berrien Street stands the Taco Hideout, a popular restaurant owned by Jack Perez, a descendant of early Mexican immigrants. In addition to feasting on tasty Mexican dishes, visitors to the restaurant can view an exhibit on the railroad camps with vintage photographs. And here’s another tip: Just before you cross the tracks to get to the Hideout, look to your left. The post for the mailbox for the camp’s residents is still there—a precious detail, among so many others, that was shared during the making of “Boxcar People.”

Allen Chapel’s rich history by Semenya McCord
When Galesburg was settled in 1837, it was described as “a west-central Illinois town known for the Swedish immigrants and handful of Negro residents.” Galesburg was also a railroad town--important for two types of railroads--the steam locomotive industry and the under-ground railroad. Less than fifteen years after Galesburg was settled, a Negro woman by the name of Susan Van Allen Richardson, learned of an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church Conference being held in Chicago. She had come to Galesburg a runaway slave in 1842, was welcomed and protected while collaborating with local abolitionists and Knox College faculty. She held prayer meetings in her home, and then expanded her vision to bringing an AME Church to Galesburg. She sold her only hog to raise the money for a train ticket to Chicago; then organized Allen Chapel AME Church in her home in May 1853. The church is named after the denomination’s
founder and first AME Bishop, Richard Allen (1816, Philadelphia, PA). While Knox College prepared for the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas Debate, the congregation of Allen Chapel purchased property for $400.00 to build the first church building. This wooden structure was destroyed by fire in the 1870s as was the replacement, but the faithfulness of Rev. Charles S. Jacobs rebuilt a church that stood until 1911. Under the leadership of Rev. Timothy Tyler, the church was then remodeled in brick.
Allen Chapel, one of Galesburg’s oldest churches, has a dynamic history, and we are blessed that detailed records covering over 160 years are being held in Seymour Library of Knox College, and the Galesburg Public Library. Allen Chapel’s established interactions with the wider Galesburg community--social welfare, education, politics--consistently follows our AME Mission: to minister to the social, spiritual, and physical development of all people.

Discover all the jewels of Knox County, Illinois!
Explore the Knox heritage As the last surviving site of one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Knox College holds a special place in the history books. Abraham Lincoln’s legacy has continued to be very important to the college, reflecting well on the institution’s abolitionist founding. The historic debate site at Old Main now features a newly renovated interior making the perfect host for The Dr. Douglas L. Wilson Gallery. Combined with The Whitcomb Heritage Center right next store at the newly modernized Alumni Hall, these two museumquality exhibits help inform the turbulent political atmosphere and moral dilemmas faced by the nation’s 16th president. The Whitcomb Heritage center, located on both sides of Alumni Hall’s second floor, focuses on the historical context surrounding the Lincoln-Douglas debates. By providing these snapshots into American History, it is the goal of the exhibit to inform visitors of the historical magnitude of the Lincoln-Douglas senatorial debates. Even though Lincoln would go on to lose the Illinois Election that caused the “Great Debates of 1858,” the somewhat radical ideas he pushed would lay the basis for his presidential election. The Center features analysis of the then increasingly contentious debate over slavery, at local, regional and national levels paired with visual representations of media and public sentiment at the time. The second half of the exhibit features insight into the Civil War and its aftermath, detailing the ramifications of the debate from the national level to historic Knox College. By juxtaposing the moral argument against slavery with challenges facing the ever-changing political and economic landscape of a nation in expansion, the exhibit showcases Lincoln’s difficulty in tackling
the issue slavery. As Thomas Jefferson had said of slavery, less than 4 decades prior to the debates, “We have the wolf by the ear, and we can neither hold him, nor safely let him go. Justice is in one scale, and self-preservation in the other.” Thanks to the generous gift from Lowell (Knox College Class of 1965) and Mariclaire Dixon, the Alumni Hall exhibit is augmented by The Dr. Douglas L. Wilson Gallery in Old Main. This exhibit features pioneering scholarship conducted by Dr. Wilson (professor emeritus of English and name-sake for the gallery), along with colleague Rodney Davis, co-directors of the Lincoln Studies Center, paired with photos from all different time periods on the Knox Campus. The goal of the Gallery, in part, is to show the man behind the history books and reflect his legacy at Knox College. Visitors will be treated to a display of influential books read by Lincoln in his formative years at the very site he advocated for a change in America’s slavery laws. A notable feature of the exhibit is a life mask of Lincoln that visitors are encouraged to touch -- a deeply meaningful encounter with one the nation’s most notable presidents. Combined, these two features at Knox make for a jump back in time, providing a look at the man who inspired millions, the challenges he faced, and his legacy that lives on here at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.

WHAT TO DO IN
The history of the railroad in Galesburg is as old as the rail industry in America. It was by some bold maneuvering that Galesburg would benefit from railroad expansion. Being in the right place at the right time helped make it all happen. It all started with Chauncey Colton. He was in Boston buying goods for his store in Galesburg. He met two men, J. W. Grimes, a lawyer from Burlington, Iowa. Grimes would later become governor of Iowa. The other man is
A RAILFAN’S DELIGHT only remembered as Wadsworth. He was in Boston to buy goods for HIS store in Aurora. All three men were very much interested in railroad endeavors. Each had their own vision of what they needed for success. Colton made the statement that would transform western Illinois. “Here we are representing three different projects, each having the same end in view; each road by
itself is worth nothing. Combined in a single line the roads will prove a great venture.” (From Earnest Elmo Caulkins’ book – They Broke the Prairie, 1937) The newly formed group would meet with James F. Joy, a famed railroad builder. We would set a goal amount of $300,000 for construction, and a deadline that he would not waiver from. Stock subscriptions would raise only $250,000 for the railroad project, $50,000 short of the goal. When it seemed the $50,000 would not be raised, Colton proclaimed he would put up $25,000 if Silas Willard would cover the remaining $25,000. Willard agreed and the Central Military Tract Railroad would become a reality. In 1854 the “Reindeer” was the first steam locomotive to arrive in Galesburg. By comparison, the first steam engine to arrive in Pittsburgh, PA was in 1851. Today, over 160 trains a day travel through Galesburg.
ANNUAL EVENTS
THROWIN’ IT BACK
KNOXVILLE MERCANTILE HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE The Knoxville Mercantile is a destination in Knox County you won’t want to miss. It’s only a couple miles down the road on I-74 in Knoxville from the Galesburg Welcome Center. The Mercantile is a throwback to shops from the 19th & early 20th century something for everyone. “It was initially built as a gas station in the 1940s,” said Keith Vaughn, who with his wife Erin and mother-in-law Pam Fritz make up Knoxville Mercantile LLC, a hardware and old-fashioned candy and ice-cream shop housed in the revitalized Knoxville Hardware building. It is still maintained as a full service hardware store with a large selection of used appliances as well. “There’s actually an old car-hoist in the back that we use as a table,” Vaughn joked. But a fusion of the structure’s vintage details — complete with exposed duct work and wooden beams — and a modern, airy vibe is exactly what Vaughn and company were going for when they purchased the space in February of 2014 with an eye to inject life back into the faltering business.
