Economy Duckworth’s focus Tammy Duckworth is running to represent Illinois in the United States Senate. Following her career as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, Tammy worked as an advocate for Veterans at both the state and federal level. Tammy was elected to the House of Representatives in 2012, where she has been an active voice for Illinois families. Tammy was living in DeKalb, Illinois, working at Rotary International while pursuing a Ph.D. at Northern Illinois University, when her unit, headquartered in Peoria, was mobilized in 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. On November 12, 2004 Tammy’s UH‐60 Black Hawk helicopter was hit by a rocket propelled grenade. She lost both legs and partial use of her right arm in the explosion. As a result of her injuries, Tammy was awarded the Purple Heart. Following her injuries, Tammy became an advocate for Veterans. While serving as Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs in Springfield, she implemented many first in the nation programs to alleviate suffering from Post Traumatic Stress, improve traumatic brain injury

screening and reduce homelessness among Veterans. She declined a military medical retirement and continued to drill as a Lieutenant Colonel in Springfield with the Illinois Army National Guard. In 2009, President Obama nominated Tammy to be an Assistant Secretary at the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. There, she headed the department’s effort to end Veteran homelessness and was a leader in initiatives for female Veterans. She also implemented innovative efforts such as creating the Office of Social Media and Online Communications and the Office for Tribal Government Relations. In Congress, Tammy is focused on growing our economy by advocating for small businesses, investing in infrastructure, improving the lives of our Veterans and cutting government waste and fraud. Tammy serves on the House Armed Services and House Oversight and Government Reform Committees. Tammy, her husband Bryan, a Major in the U.S. Army, and their daughter Abigail live in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

CHERI BUSTOS, 17TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

Cheri Bustos seeking re-election

Congresswoman represents 17th Congressional District in bid for re-election At a time when career politicians continue the same old politics and the same old ways, all at the expense of the middle class, Cheri Bustos has decided to take a different approach. Since taking office, Cheri has been a strong, independent voice for Illinois’ middle class, and has worked across the aisle to create jobs, protect Social Security and Medicare, stand up for our veterans and get our economy working for all families. Cheri was born in Springfield in a home with a lot of love, learning from her parents at an early age the importance of hard work, community and helping others. She attended Illinois College in Jacksonville, where she was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for basketball and volleyball. She later earned her Master’s Degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She moved to the Quad-Cities more than 25 years ago to pursue a career in journalism, reporting on crime, city government, healthcare and other important community issues. Cheri isn’t afraid of taking on the tough issues and was honored over the years with several awards for her in-depth, investigative reporting. While working as a new reporter covering the cop beat, Cheri met and fell in love with Gerry Bustos, her husband. He is now a captain with the Rock Island County Sheriff ’s Office and Com-

mander of the Quad-City Bomb Squad. They have three sons, Nick, Joey, and Tony, who with his wife Amanda, have made Cheri and Gerry the proud grandparents of Keiton and Briley. Cheri eventually left journalism to work for a non-profit health system, where she fought to improve access to care for area families and help the disadvantaged navigate the health care system. Cheri has long been active in her community, and served as President of the Board of Directors of the Women’s Connection, one of Illinois’ largest women’s membership organizations. She is a past volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters-Quad-Cities; Junior Achievement of the Heartland in the Quad-Cities; Two Rivers YMCA in Moline; and

United Way of the Quad-Cities Area, where she served on the Community Investment Committee. Before being elected to Congress, Cheri also served as an Alderwoman on the City Council in East Moline. Her top priority then was as it remains today-- economic development – and led to her founding and chairing the East Moline Downtown Revitalization Committee. Cheri Bustos was honored to be elected by the voters of Illinois 17th Congressional District in 2012 and considers it a privilege to represent the people of Northwest and Central Illinois each and every day.

Schools, healthcare top priority for Mendoza Susana Mendoza for Comptroller; she will “stand up to the Governor or anyone who tries to take away the opportunity for people to provide for their families”. Susana Mendoza was the first woman ever elected Chicago City Clerk; as City Clerk, Susana voluntarily reduced her budget, cut overtime spending by 70% and personnel payrolls by 10%. Susana is a tech-savvy fiscal watchdog who has successfully rotted out waste in government and made it more transparent. Susana believes that Springfield politicians shouldn’t get paid when they aren’t doing their jobs. As Comptroller, Susana will prioritize payments to schools and health care providers over paychecks to politicians. Fiercely independent, Susana has stood up to leaders of

both parties, including as a lead sponsor of HB 1650, creating the panel to impeach former Governor Blagojevich. Susana is a happily married mom and an independent experienced public servant. She knows firsthand how important it is to protect the economic rights of working families. Vote for Susana Mendoza for a strong fighter for Illinois Comptroller, on November 8th.

BILL BUTTS, STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Curtis seeking first Bill Butts wants term in the 93rd 74th district nod

John Curtis is the Democratic candidate for the 93rd District of Illinois. He is a first-time candidate who is running because he believes that Illinois state government needs new leadership and needs to better serve the people of Illinois. John has been an educator at the junior high, high school, and university levels and has managed a farm and small business providing quality, healthy food to about 150 people for almost 20 years. John served with the United States State Department as a Peace Corps Volunteer for 2.5 years and was a board member and president of the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, both of which contributed to his strong belief in the importance of family farms and small business entrepreneurship to help communities create jobs. Whenever he sees a problem, John wants to be part of the solution. One thing that John values most is the ability to move beyond party lines to get things done. His priorities reflect this: he is a strong supporter of education funding, creating and keeping good-paying

jobs and shaping the state into one that pays its bills on time while planning for the future. John supports a government that protects the personal freedoms of all citizens while maintaining the basic government services that the people in the 93rd district rely on. After meeting with many residents, John believes that all of these goals are possible for Illinois with strong leadership and a willingness to work.
