Welcome to the 2013–2014 season at the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center! We are celebrating all that is new at IU Southeast this year, and we invite you to celebrate with us. I am the new director of the Ogle Center, but I am no stranger to IU Southeast. I have been a member of our campus community since 2003 and have performed as an oboist in the IU Southeast Orchestra for many years. I am delighted to be joining you in my new role as we present an exciting season for you. This season’s offerings promise something for everyone—from a magical beginning with illusionist Jason Bishop to the foot-stomping bluegrass music of The Boxcars. Plus, thanks to the generosity of many sponsors and area foundations, our Children’s Series performances continue to be offered free of charge for area students. We encourage you to attend our IU Southeast music department performances and theatre department productions. In addition to providing a valuable educational experience to our music and theatre majors, community members are also welcome to perform with these groups. The Louisville Orchestra’s NightLites performances always make for an enjoyable evening. We look forward to filling the inside of the Ogle Center with music, theatre, dance, and joy. To be part of the 2013–2014 season, get your tickets today by calling (812) 941-2526.

Jason Bishop

America’s Most-Talked-About Illusionist! Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $26.50, $10 for IU Southeast students Jason Bishop is an international award-winning illusionist who remains the youngest person to win the Magician’s Alliance of Eastern States Stage Award and one of the youngest people to compete in the Society of American Magicians World-Class competition. Bishop is currently the only illusionist in the U.S. to tour with the rare Double Levitation, Plasma illusion, and Op-Art. His combination of modern costuming and music, fast-paced illusions, sleight of hand and audience participation has landed him in several notable venues. “Jason Bishop is the best magician we’ve ever seen.” —Chris Penn and Bam Margera

sierra hull Bluegrass Music’s Next Starlet! Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $26.50, $10 for IU Southeast students One of bluegrass’s few full-fledged virtuosic instrumentalist/singer/songwriters, Sierra Hull, a Berklee School of Music graduate, has gracefully grown into her gifts. Of course, the evidence of Sierra’s uncommon musical maturity has been there all along, and earned her formidable fans. Winning Berklee’s most prestigious award, the Presidential Scholarship, the first bluegrass musician to do so, has expanded her musical worldview. As a player, a singer, and a songwriter, she has remarkable range and gives performances of broad cultural importance, at venues and events like Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the National Prayer Breakfast. While her mandolin playing has always possessed clarity and fleet-fingered precision, she attacks her solos with spontaneity and depth of feeling; she calls it “playing with a point to prove.” Her singing—always straight and true—has a heartfelt power behind it, rare and refreshing.

Susan Werner

Encore at the Ogle Center! Friday, November 15, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $26.50, $10 for IU Southeast students Called the “empress of the unexpected” by NPR, singer-songwriter Susan Werner composes skillful songs that effortlessly slide between folk, jazz, and pop—all delivered with sassy wit and classic Midwestern charm. Throughout her expansive career, her musical versatility has emerged as a hallmark of Werner’s talent, and has proven to be a quintessential ingredient of her engrossing musical persona. Her latest album is infused with the rustic roots of American folk, blues, and country music and features such all-star guests such as Vince Gill, Keb’ Mo’, and Paul Franklin.

Quartetto Gelato

Classical Styling with Eclectic Music! Friday, February 21, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $26.50, $10 for IU Southeast students Virtuosic showpieces, romantic tenor arias, pyrotechnical solos, blazing gypsy show pieces, multi-instrument mastery, and a World Accordion Champion—this is Quartetto Gelato. For nearly two decades, this dazzling ensemble has enchanted audiences and critics worldwide with their exotic blend of musical talent, artistic passion, and humor. Classical in training, eclectic by design, Quartetto Gelato not only thrills its audiences with its virtuosity, but also offers the bonus of a brilliant operatic tenor. With a performance repertoire that spans the globe to include classical masterworks, operatic melodies, the sizzling energy of tangos, and gypsy and folk songs, the group’s theatrical stage presence and relaxed humor establishes an intimate rapport with audiences.

The Official Blues Brothers Revue High Energy, Rolling Laughs, Timeless Music!

Friday, March 14, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $26.50, $10 for IU Southeast students The Official Blues Brothers Revue recreates the live concert experience, integrating the humor and songs from the original film and subsequent albums. Produced by Judy Belushi Pisano and Dan Aykroyd, the Revue pays homage to Chicago’s rich history of blues, soul music, and gospel in the true spirit of the original Blues Brothers. Under the musical direction of Paul Shaffer, Jake, Elwood, and the high-energy, eightpiece Intercontinental Rhythm & Blues Revue Band lay down a big sound, performed with the passion and precision of the original Blues Brothers.

The Boxcars

Five Bluegrass All-Stars in One Group! Friday, April 25, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $26.50, $10 for IU Southeast students Without a list or a plan, Adam Steffey, Ron Stewart, John Bowman, Keith Garrett, and Harold Nixon met in the studio and created a new album in less than four days. The Boxcars walked out of that studio with twelve dynamic tracks, executed with the characteristic emotion, precision, and cleverness that fans have come to expect from the talented group. The band’s memorable sound is a mix of swing, old time, gospel, and bluegrass, rock solid and masterful, rooted in tradition and flavored with contemporary beats.

Music

In addition to providing a valuable educational experience to music students, the ensembles and guest artists of the IU Southeast Music Department offer quality music performances to the community at a great value. The IU Southeast Orchestra explores the riches of the symphonic repertoire, including concertos, operatic repertoire, and major choral/orchestral works in addition to symphonies. The IU Southeast Concert Band performs the highest quality literature, from band classics to international contemporary works. The Commonwealth Brass Band is an English-style brass band performing literature reflecting that tradition. The IU Southeast Concert Choir and Community Chorus perform outstanding and highly varied choral literature drawn from all styles and historical periods. The IU Southeast Percussion Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble are the latest additions to our lineup of student ensembles and performances. Professional ensembles such as the Kentucky Center Chamber Players, Ceruti Chamber Players, and New Millennium Duo are frequent guests in our regular season.

TheaTre

The theatre program at IU Southeast is committed to providing a wide variety of opportunities for students to explore and develop expertise in performance and design and equally committed to bringing intriguing, thought-provoking, and entertaining theatre to our community. Our season typically includes two to three mainstage productions, one of which is often a musical —as well as a student showcase production entirely directed, designed, acted and produced by our theatre students. Don’t miss this season’s production of Damn Yankees (November 7–17), God of Carnage (February 20–March 3), and INDIUCKY: Fables, Fairy Tales, and Folklore, an original musical comedy created by IU Southeast students and faculty (April 25–27).

Stage One Family Theatre’s House at Pooh Corner Recommended for Grades Pre K–3

September 24–27, 2013 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Christopher Robin has decided to run away with his friends Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, and the rest. They’ll probably go to the North Pole, or to the South Pole, for there is a dark, mysterious threat that he’s to be sent away to “education.” Nobody knows exactly what or where that is, and if he’s sent to such a distant place, what can his friends possibly do without him? So it’s generally agreed that they’ll run away. But Christopher Robin isn’t quite so sure that running away is the answer… The adventure awaits.

All Children’s Series performances are free to the public, reservations required. For Children’s Series reservations, please call the Ogle Center Box Office at (812) 941-2525 or request a reservation form by emailing oglemail@ius.edu.
