first heard Giselle Felice and Erik Abernathy perform at the Marion Theatre’s preopening event in August. I was impressed with their onstage chemistry and how fluidly the two could switch from Erik playing traditional Brazilian guitar music to Giselle singing Stevie Nicks’ “Landslide.” Come to find out, this performance was the first inperson show the duo had performed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they were just as excited about once again performing live as I was about seeing a live performance. “It sounds silly, but it was so strange I LOVE THAT I CAN SHARE to hear clapping or ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ SOMETHING I LOVE SO MUCH during our set,” Giselle explains. “Making people feel emotion and having that WITH MY PERSON. an exciting ride. We may slide through the corners sideways, and we will hunt for local wildlife along the way.” The Withlacoochee River is rich with history, and Captain Bob enjoys sharing some of that history with his passengers. “We go back and tour some of the old phosphate mines on the river,” he says. “It’s not
unusual at all to come across hogs, deer, turtles, birds, otters and gators. We’ve even seen a black bear in the area.” Captain Bob’s Airboat Tours takes guests on an hourlong adventure about 8 miles down river and back. The 2019 Floral City Airboat can accommodate six passengers and is powered by a 6.2 super charged Corvette motor. That’s some serious horsepower. The boats are U.S.C.G.-inspected vessels, and a Coast Guard-approved life jacket and ear protection are provided to everyone on board. If you prefer to travel at your own leisure,

he anticipation builds as the fans fire up. Adventure is certain around every twist and turn. Gliding down the Withlacoochee River, the wind whipping through your hair, this day promises to be one you’ll remember. Captain Bob will make sure of it. Captain Bob Jewett of Captain Bob’s Airboat Tours at Angler’s Resort, along with his wife, Dallise, has been providing Dunnellon visitors with a unique, memorable experience since 2008 when the captain began taking adventure seekers on his hour-long tour of the Withlacoochee River. “I drive it like I stole it,” jokes Captain Bob, who has had his U.S. Coast Guard Master license for 12 years now. “It’s definitely

Captain Bob’s also rents pontoon and jon boats by the day or half day. The resort also offers a fully renovated bait and tackle shop for all your fishing needs. “Everybody loves to explore the Rainbow River,” Captain Bob says. “It’s a beautiful river, and it’s crystal clear. The fishing is good as well!” When your boat docks back at Captain Bob’s, albeit airboat or other, you’re bound to have worked up an appetite. Bob and Dallise have you covered. The Blue Gator Tiki Bar rests right on the Withlacoochee River and opened to customers in August 2009. It’s been a hit with the locals and visitors ever since. Bob’s favorite is the Blackened Grouper Sandwich, and you can’t go wrong trying the Gator Bites, either. “Regardless of what you like, though, we have good food across the board,” says Bob.
The menu offers plenty of options, including a tasty ribeye steak, burgers and a variety of sandwiches, including a classic Cuban, Reuben, Philly cheese steak, a turkey bacon ranch and more. The seafood baskets are also popular and are sure to fill you up. Choices
include fish tacos, salmon, grouper fingers, fried oysters, clam strips, snapper, shrimp and more. All made fresh to order. Indoor and outdoor dining is available on the river, and once given the all-clear from local health officials, live music will once again be offered on the outdoor patio Thursdays through Sundays. If your day date would be even better as an evening away, the Jewett’s Gator Den Motel has been fully rebuilt from the ground up and remodeled at the Angler’s Resort. “We offer 12 rooms at the motel, and they are all beautifully designed and decorated,” says Bob. “My wife, Dallise, spent a lot of time making sure everything was just right.” The spacious rooms include a mini refrigerator and microwave (perfect for your Blue Gator leftovers), a large-screen television, comfortable beds, a beautifully tiled bathroom and quality linens. On day two, before you head home, make a quick stop in Dunnellon’s quaint historic district where you’ll find antique and gift shops, plus craft shops and a Florida bookstore. n 2013 the Florida Park Service acquired management of the former Silver Springs attraction, including the headspring area and the world-famous glass bottom boats. The acquisition added 231 additional acres to the existing Silver River State Park. “At that time, the park’s name was changed to Silver Springs State Park,” says Alex Cronin with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s press office. “As Florida’s oldest attraction, the glass bottom boats showcase the crystal-clear springs and the underwater life that naturally inhabits Silver Springs. The glass bottom boats take many daily trips up and down the Silver River where guests have the unique opportunity to see below the surface of the water and enjoy the river’s wildlife, vegetation and historical and cultural artifacts. Silver Springs State Park offers areas where guests can enjoy hiking, mountain biking trails, horseback riding and paddling.” Silver Springs offers visitors one of Florida’s best views of clear groundwater flowing to the 14

surface. There are more than 30 springs in just the upper part of the Silver River, including Mammoth Spring, a first magnitude spring in the park. Canoeing and kayaking offers explorers a close-up look at the bubbling spring, and canoes and kayaks (including clear-bottom kayaks) are available for rent. Some of Ocala’s most adventurous and scenic nature trails can also be found in the park. The Spring Trail is a 2.3-mile one-way hike through an open pine forest and oak hammock. During the dry season the Sinkhole Trail leads hikers to the geologic feature it’s named for. If wildlife viewing is what you’re interested in, the Sandhill Trail is frequented by white-tail deer, fox squirrel, gopher tortoises and even wild turkeys. You may also catch a glimpse of the famed Silver Springs monkeys while exploring the park. If you’d like to get your steps in, but the woods aren’t for you, walk along the store fronts and deck area of the park. On a hot day, stop in at Paradise Treats for an ice cream to cool off. Plan to visit on the second or fourth
Saturday of the month to experience a tour of the Cracker Village. This replica of a 19th century pioneer settlement includes a cabin, outbuildings, a schoolhouse and more and can be found within the Baseline Road park entrance. T
he City of Ocala recently completed construction for the new conservation area known as the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park. Opening in September, the project broke ground in June 2018 and offers 60 acres of conservation area and greenspace for the west side of Ocala. While the Ocala Wetland Recharge Park features educational kiosks, two and a half miles of walking trails and scenic boardwalks, its main purpose is to reduce nutrients and other pollutants in the water it receives, which comes to approximately 3 million gallons of treated wastewater and stormwater daily. This newly polished water will then recharge or give water directly back to the aquifer. “Treatment wetlands, like this one, are still considered innovative but are increasing in popularity throughout the state,” says Rachel Slocumb, water resources conservation coordinator with the City of Ocala. “The purpose is to take stormwater or treated wastewater, send it to the park and let the wetland system trap contaminants and reduce the nutrients found in stormwater from fertilizers and feces and wastewater.” According to Rachel, the park’s purpose is really threefold: to reduce nutrients and other pollutants from the water being sent to the park; to recharge the aquifer; and to recreate through the park’s two and a half miles of fully accessible, 8-foot-wide, asphalt paved trails, 1,500 feet of boardwalk and educational signs throughout. “City of Ocala customers consume an average of 12 million gallons of water a day,” says Rachel.
“The park will be able to recharge, or give back, up to 5 million gallons of water a day once it is at full capacity. Right now, it receives just over 3 million gallons of water a day. This is amount is recharged daily.” An additional benefit of the park will be outdoor passive recreation, including walking, running and observing nature; indigenous flora and fauna; and educational components. Dogs, biking, skateboarding, rollerblades and motorized recreational vehicles are prohibited. Visitors can view the park’s many wildlife residents, including over 40 different species of birds. “This park provides an immersive nature experience,” says Rachel. “Studies have shown that spending time in nature helps lower stress and promote a healthy lifestyle. The recharge and nutrient reduction benefits of the park will help protect Silver Springs by providing clean water directly into the aquifer. With such a fast pace life happening around us, it is nice to slow
down sometimes and really take some time relax and go for a stroll.” Funding for construction of the park was made possible through grants received from the St. John’s River Water Management District, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Legislative Springs Funding, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Recreation and Trail Program, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection 319 Non-point Source Pollution. “Being at the park as the sun rises and hearing nature wake up is probably the best part to me,” says Rachel. “It is a little nature oasis just off the interstate. I hope people really take some time to reflect and see how with small changes we can all make a big difference to protect the environment and our water resources.” Ocala Wetland Recharge Park // 2105 NW 21st St., Ocala // Open to the public sunrise to sunset daily // For more information, contact the City of Ocala Water Resources department at (352) 351-6772 or visit Ocala Wetland Recharge Park on Facebook and Instagram.

ne hundred and ninety-three years ago, Seminole Indian war drums sounded and United States Army soldiers fought for their lives and for the opening of a new territory. The year was 1827, and the first of two forts was built in what would one day become Marion County. Named Fort King to pay tribute to Colonel King, Commander of the Fourth Infantry, many important army leaders served at the fort, including General Scott, General Gaines and General Thomas Jessup. Does the name Osceola, ring a bell? Osceola, a Seminole war leader and his followers ambushed and killed Wiley Thompson, an Indian agent, along with Lt. Constantine Smith while they walked out of the Fort. Also killed was Erassus Rogers who owned the settlers store, along with a 12-year-old boy who worked at the store. The same day a contingent of 108 soldiers were in route from Fort Brooke in Tampa to reinforce Fort King. All but two were killed in the ambush lead by Chief Micanopy. This historical event came to be known as the Dade Massacre. In an effort to learn more about and honor Fort King’s history, the city and county created the Fort King Heritage Association, Inc. in 2011. A tax-exempt organization comprised of volunteers to raise funds, develop plans and rebuild the Fort King complex, the association will oversee the project to its conclusion. The ultimate goal is to rebuild the fort complex as it stood in 1837, which is the year the second fort was constructed, as the initial fort had been destroyed by fire. The four walls and two block houses have been

Later in elementary school, we learned the history of Fort King and about how Chief Osceola shot Wiley Thompson, thus starting the Seminole Indian War. Now, thanks to the efforts of many in our community, Fort King is a living monument and children can learn first-hand about our history.” Over the past 33 years, 42 acres have been acquired, 75,000 artifacts have been recovered and, in 2004, the site was declared a national

The capital campaign calls to raise $15 million over 15 years. The rebuild of Fort King will provide many benefits to the community, including educational opportunities, recreation and important economic impacts. he Fort King National Historic Landmark marks the location of the birthplace of Marion County and the City of Ocala. In 2017 the first phase of reconstruction, which was based on old drawings and a collection of historical photos, included the full-size fort replica. The visitor’s center includes a collection of displays, including a working Howitzer Canon used for events and reenactments. Visitors should also check out the 12-minute video highlighting Ocala’s rich history. And it’s a great starting point when exploring Fort King. “We sit on a unique spot here in Ocala,” says Keifer Calkins, outdoor historic resource program supervisor for the City of Ocala. “We have the only fort in Florida preserved to the extent that it is. And the city council and county commission just approved a 15-year master plan to complete the build out.” In the meantime, though, there is plenty to enjoy at the park. In addition to walking through and exploring the fort, there is a 1-mile nature trail that meanders its way through the 42-acre property. Take the dog (leashed, of course) or meet up with friends to explore the trail. Follow the green paint indicators to remain on the trail. The Seep Spring on property holds water and never dries out. Keifer says the water travels through a creek and eventually empties

into our storm water system. Last month the Archeological Resource Center opened to the public. “The center showcases artifacts that haven’t been available to the public until now,” says Keifer. “There is a mix of foundon-site and general artifacts, including an Andrew Jackson cufflink, 1800s coins, bottles, nails, buttons and other accoutrement used by soldiers.” As a matter of fact, there are over 50,000 artifacts that can be rotated through the exhibit. “There are two types of history,” explains Keifer. “The historical record includes things like letters, drawings and research that we can extract information from. We use this to develop the site to the best of our abilities. Then, we use archaeology to look even further. What gets unearthed on-site tells us how people used to live and work. Broken glass or ceramics might tell us it was a domestic space. Tools, coal and metal might tell us a blacksmith shop was on-site. We use archeological finds to
determine our history.” Since opening, the landmark has offered residents a variety of fun, engaging events. Although COVID-19 put a damper on many of those events recently, some are still a go, including the Heritage Skills Day planned for December 12. “This day-long event will include classes and demonstrations in things like rug making, broom making, outdoor cooking, blacksmithing and more,” says Keifer. “Registration is required for classes, but demonstrations are open to all.” All the info can be found on the Fort King National Historic Landmark and Visitor’s Center’s Facebook page. “Besides being an amazing resource of history, we are also a city park,” says Keifer. “You can learn about the history of your community and get out in nature right near the middle of downtown.” Fort King National Historic Landmark // Visitor’s Center open Friday-Saturday, 12-5pm // Trails, heritage garden and fort are open seven days a week, sunrise to sunset.

e all have to eat, so why not eat something good? That’s one of a few adages we live by. We all think of good food differently, but one thing that we can all agree on is that some of our favorite food experiences have been had at a food truck. And why do we love food trucks so much? They supply quick, easy-to-eat food that is generally portable, flavorful and memorable. But these aren’t the only reasons we have
a passion for food trucks. It’s more than food. Food trucks provide a sense of community, bringing people together in a unique atmosphere for something we can all relate to. Many trucks have a picnic-like setting that allows patrons to mingle and meet, doing so in a way that restaurants do not, so you
can always count on making a few new friends. Food brings us together, but food trucks allow us to bond over a shared experience. Food truck popularity has grown tremendously around the area over the past few years. What seemed to start as just a few food trucks serving barbecue has evolved into an array NOV ‘20

here’s nothing like a warm bowl of chili to kick off the winter season, and although the in-person event celebrating this favorite dish has been put on hold this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re here to make sure you still get a hefty helping of chili to keep you warm and cozy all season long. In its 39th year, the Marion County Chili Cook-Off is a staple of Ocala’s fall festival lineup. Benefitting The Cornerstone School, the festival started as a small gathering in the school’s parking lot and has grown into one of the county’s most popular community events, with over 5,000 local residents in attendance in 2019. “This year, unfortunately, will be the first year that The Cornerstone School has not had its Chili Cook-Off fundraiser,” says Matt Young, marketing, communications and fundraising coordinator for the school. “It’s a hard pill to swallow, but we respect the importance of keeping our community safe during this pandemic and doing our part to limit the spread of the virus.” In an effort to keep the tradition alive, the school has decided to make the best of the situation—albeit in a different format that allows for smaller groups of people while still giving the community the chili it loves. “The Chili Cook-Off committee has decided to still make an event T-shirt for what is now being called the 2020 Quarantine Edition of the Marion County Chili Cook-Off,” says Matt. “The funds raised will go directly back into the school, but the main goal this year is to just keep the ‘love of chili’ top of mind and to build excitement for our 40th
