10 Jahre Sachen für Männer: HERRLICH. Männer sind doch alle gleich, lautet ein weit verbreitetes Vorurteil. Es ist wahrscheinlich mitverantwortlich dafür, dass Männer lange Zeit auch immer das Gleiche geschenkt bekamen. Nämlich Socken. Bis zum 8. August 2002 jedenfalls, denn an diesem denkwürdigen Tage eröffneten Michael Becker und Gundula Hoburg das erste Konzeptgeschäft für Männergeschenke in Berlin. Vermutlich sogar in ganz Deutschland. Es heißt HERRLICH – und ist damit verblüffend passend benannt. Eine der kniffligsten Fragen der Menschheitsgeschichte ist doch: Was schenkt man einem Mann? Jetzt mal abgesehen von Dauerkarten, Sportwagen und Flugzeugträgern. Und wann ist ein Männergeschenk ein Männergeschenk? Wenn es streng riecht? Oder nicht rostet? Vielleicht wenn es qualmt oder irgendwie ganz alt ist? Anfangs tappten auch die beiden HERRLICH-Gründer im Dunkeln. Gut, dass sie dabei zu zweit und außerdem verschiedenen Geschlechts waren. So konnte man sich der Antwort aus zwei Perspektiven nähern. „Wer einen Mann beschenken will, muss ihn nur ein bisschen studieren“, rät Herr Becker seinen Kunden. Denn so ein Mann hat ja bekanntlich Hobbys: Kochen, Spielen, Schreiben, Picknicken, Rumlümmeln – um nur einige zu nennen. Und so finden Frauen, Freunde und Kollegen bei HERRLICH alles, was der Mann eben so braucht: Vom Taschenkompass bis zur

Espressomaschine – Brettspiele, Kuscheldecken, Rasierpinsel, Korkenzieher und Küchenmesser eingeschlossen. Auch auf der Suche nach anspruchsvollen Accessoires wie Gürteln, Umhängetaschen oder Manschettenknöpfen wird man/frau fündig. Und ganz nebenbei kristallisiert sich aus dieser Aufzählung das wohl einzige universelle Wesensmerkmal eines Männergeschenkes heraus: Praktisch soll es bitteschön sein. Eine Sache, um damit Sachen machen zu können. Nur eben keine Socken. Allerdings zeigen sich inzwischen auch Ausnahmen von dieser Regel. Männer beginnen nämlich, sich aus ihrer Geschlechterrolle zu befreien und sind zunehmend offen für „Unnützes“ – wenn’s denn schön ist und echt und solide. Für Gundula Hoburg und Michael Becker ist das Geheimnis „Männergeschenk“ auch nach 10 Jahren noch lange nicht restlos gelüftet. Trotzdem. Die beiden haben mit ihrem Konzept echte Pionierarbeit geleistet, Pflöcke eingeschlagen, das Land bestellt und eben – ganz männlich – gezeigt, was Sache ist in der Männergeschenkewunschwelt. 10 years of stuff for men: HERRLICH. Come on, we all know that men are all the same! Or so the common prejudice goes. This is probably part of the reason that men always receive the same presents: socks. That is, up until 8th August 2002. Because on this remarkable day, Michael Becker and Gundula Hoburg opened Berlin’s – and probably all of Germany’s – first shop specifically selling presents for men. It is called HERRLICH – the pun in German is certainly intended: Herr for man, herrlich for glorious. One of the trickiest questions in human history is certainly, “what should one give a man as a gift?” Alright – we’re not talking about season tickets, sports cars and aeroplanes. And when is a present for men a present for men? When it smells strong? Or when it doesn’t rust? Perhaps when it smoulders, or is kind of old? To start off with, both of HERRLICH’s founders were fumbling around in the dark, too. Good thing they paired up – and that it’s a guy and a girl. They could get closer to finding the answer with two heads in the game. “If you want to buy a man a present, you just have to study him for a little while,” Mr Becker confides in us. Because said men have obvious hobbies: cooking, playing games, writing, picnicking, lazing around – just to name a few. And so women, friends and colleagues will find everything in HERRLICH that a man could possibly need: from a pocket com-

pass to an espresso machine – board games, fluffy blankets, shaving brushes, corkscrews and kitchen knives included. If you’re looking for high quality accessories such as belts, satchels or cuff links, you’re likely to strike gold here. A little side-note here – this list confirms to us a universally necessary characteristic of any present you might be giving a guy: oh please, let it be practical! Stuff that you can use to do stuff. But no socks. However, there are indeed a couple of exceptions to the rule. Men are starting to slip out of their gendered role, and are increasingly open to presents in the “useless” category, as long as it looks good and is real and solid. For Gundula Hoburg and Michael Becker, the secret of “presents for men” is far from having been completely uncovered. Still. The pair of them have really done some pioneering work, set the markers and broken in the ground and even – in a very manly way – shown us what belongs on the male gift-wishlist. Paradies der Damen bei Broke & Schön Von wegen reich und schön. Bei Broke & Schön gibt es Schönsein auch preiswert. Zu guten Preisen finden hier Frauen und Mädchen all das, wovon sie nie genug haben können: romantisch verspielte Kleider, klassische Blusen, trendige Schuhe und Taschen, stilvollen Schmuck und Tücher für jedes Outfit. Die Modeboutique haben Maria und Martin vor zwei Jahren ganz in der Nähe vom Boxhagener Platz eröffnet – und das mit viel Leidenschaft und Professionalität. Um Verkauf und Einkauf kümmert sich Maria. Die studierte Bekleidungstechnikerin hat nicht nur Spaß an Mode, sie kennt sich auch mit Schnitttechniken, Verarbeitung und Material aus. „Mit Mode bin ich aufgewachsen. Meine Mutter hatte eine eigene Boutique und hat noch selbst genäht. Das Geräusch der Nähmaschine hat mich lange begleitet und ist mir sehr vertraut“, erzählt sie. Martin ist bei Broke & Schön für das Backoffice zuständig. Der Thüringer kam nach Berlin, um sein Abi tur zu absolvieren und danach zu studieren. Doch nach dem Abi jobbte er und machte sich schließlich mit einem eigenen Elektronikshop im Internet selbständig. 2008 gründete er zusammen mit Maria einen Online-Modeshop für kleine und eher unbekannte französische Modelabels. „Angefangen hat es aber eigentlich mit Vintage“, sagt Martin. „Maria und ich

haben alte Taschen und Schuhe verkauft, die wir auf gemeinsamen Flohmarktstreifzügen ergattert hatten. So bin ich da beeinflusst worden“ Als der Onlineshop gut lief, fiel bei Maria und ihrem Mann die Entscheidung für eine eigene Boutique. „Den Umbau haben wir selbstgemacht und alles, was wir hatten, in den Laden gesteckt“, sagt sie. Nun wächst das Ladengeschäft: Letztes Jahr wurde es um einen weiteren Verkaufsraum vergrößert. Und in den nächsten Wochen wird es außerdem einen neuen Raum für die Ankleidekabinen geben. Wer Broke & Schön betritt, fühlt sich wie in einem gemütlichen Wohnzimmer. Blümchentapete, Kronleuchter und Pastellfarben lassen ein elegantes und leicht nostalgisches Ambiente aufkommen. Für eine sachkundige Beratung sorgen ebenso elegante Verkäuferinnen. Ein Blick in das liebliche Schmuckkästchen in der Krossener Straße lohnt sich übrigens öfter. Alle sechs Wochen gibt es neue angesagte Klamotten. Und Stammkunden bekommen eine Bonuskarte.

A ladies‘ paradise: Broke & Schön Oh to be rich and beautiful! At Broke & Schön, beauty comes at good value! Two years ago, Maria and Martin opened this fashion boutique, located in the Boxhagener Platz area. And they did so with much passion and a professional spirit. Maria looks after buying and selling. The carefully studied clothing technician doesn‘t just enjoy fashion, but is well versed in cutting techniques, processes and materials. „I grew up surrounded by fashion. My mother had her own boutique and sewed her own things. The sound of a sewing machine was part of my life and I know it well,“ she tells us. Martin is responsible for the administration of the Broke & Schön shop. Originally from Thüringen, he moved to Berlin to finish up his high school studies and planned to go on to do a university degree. However, after finishing school, he started to work and ended up starting his own electronics shop online. In 2008, he founded and online fashion shop together with Maria, selling small and relatively unknown French fashion labels. „It really started with vintage pieces,“ says Martin. „Maria and I sold

old bags and shoes which we‘d gathered up from various fleamarkets. That‘s influenced my style.“ When the online store did good business, Maria and her husband decided to open their own boutique. „We renovated it ourselves and put everything we had into the shop,“ she says. And the shop is still growing all the time: last year, another room was added to their salesfloor. And in the next few weeks, there will be another room used just for fitting rooms. The moment you enter Broke & Schön, it feels like a cosy living room. Floral carpets, chandeliers and pastel colours give off an elegant and nostalgic atmosphere. Elegant shop assistants help you out with professional advice. It‘s worth taking a look into this Pandora‘s box on Krossener Straße on a regular basis. Every six weeks, the newest and trendiest clothes arrive in store. And regular customers even get a bonus card.

matzmate verbindet Kunst und Handwerk und kreiert funktionale Wegbegleiter Stefan Matzdorf und seine Freundin Laura Jost bringen frischen Wind in das Weißenseer Komponistenviertel. Nach nur einem Monat Umbauzeit eröffneten der De signer und die Fotografin im April ihr gemeinsames Atelier. Im hinteren Bereich hat Laura ihr Fotostudio, vorne arbeitet Stefan in seiner Werkstatt. Hier entstehen in hochwertiger Handarbeit Portemonnaies, SmartphoneHüllen, Laptop-Taschen und Maßanfertigungen im schlichten und funktionalen Design und aus feinstem Leder. Das Besondere liegt dabei im Detail: Das Leder wird kontrastreich mit einem robusten Baumwoll-Polyester-Stoff kombiniert, auf dem eigene Collagen, Illustrationen oder Fotos aufgedruckt sind. Schon während seines Studiums an der Kunsthochschule Burg Giebichenstein in Halle hat sich der angehende Designer in Leder und seine vielfältigen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten verliebt. „Ich habe zunächst Schuhe gebaut, gelernt, wie die Verarbeitung funktioniert und dann mit einer geliehenen Industrienähmaschine losgelegt“, sagt der Berliner. „Das hat mir so gefallen, dass ich mir nach dem Projekt eine eigene Maschine gekauft habe.“ Seine Fertigkeiten verfeinerte er bei einer Maßschuhmacherei in Kreuzberg. Laura Jost hat 2006 ihren Abschluss an der Kunstakademie in Maastricht in Fotografie gemacht. Nach dem Studium kam sie für einen Assistenzjob nach Berlin. Seit 2008 ist die Aachenerin freie Fotografin. Am lieb-

sten fotografiert sie Menschen. Auch, weil es schön ist, anderen die Angst vorm Fotografieren zu nehmen und sie mit einem Bild glücklich zu machen. Vor rund zwei Jahren bestärkte sie ihren Freund darin, kreativ zu arbeiten und seine damalige Festanstellung bei einer Druckerei für digitalen Stoffdruck aufzugeben. So entstand matzmate. „Der Name steht für einen Kumpel, ein Stück Stefan, das man immer dabei hat“, erklärt die 31-Jährige lachend. In der Bizetstraße 122 kann man sich aussuchen, mit welchem Motiv das Leder kombiniert oder welches Garn für farbige Kontrastnähte genommen werden soll. Außerdem produziert matzmate Cycling-Caps. Statt der üblichen Werbung werden die Rennradfahrer-Kappen mit eigenen Grafiken bedruckt. Wenn sich Stefan Matzdorf nicht mit matzmate beschäftigt, füllt er seine Skizzenbücher mit Illustrationen, in denen sich Kaligrafie, Text, Skizzen und Verzierungen zu einem ungewöhnlichen Kunstwerk verbinden.

matzmate combines art and artisanry for functional companions. Stefan Matzdorf and Laura Jost bring a breath of fresh air to Weißensee, named after the famous composer. After just a month of renovation, the designer and photographer inaugurated their shared studio. Laura has her photographer’s studio at the back, while Stefan’s workspace is up front. High-quality hand-made wallets, smartphone sleeves and laptop-bags are created here – simple, customised designs made out of leather. It’s all about the detail. The leather is combined with a robust cotton-polyester fabric for a high-contrast effect, on which the designer’s own collages, illustrations or photos are printed. During his degree at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art in Halle, the budding designer fell in love with leather, among other elements of his design style. “I started off by making shoes, learning how the process worked. Then I really let rip with a borrowed industrial sewing,” the Berliner says. “I liked it so much that I bought myself one after the project.” He refined his skills at a customised bootmaker in Kreuzberg. Laura Jost graduated in photography at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts in 2006, after which she came to Berlin to work as an assistant. Since 2008, the freelance photographer from Aachen has specialised in people-photography, doing business por-

traits and branding for companies on the one hand and portraits of musicians on the other. She also combines artisan quality with creativity. After two years working at a textile-printing company, designer Stefan went freelance. Thus was born matzmate. „MATZ is a part of my last name, and MATE is like pal, a piece of Berlin which always goes with you. The PiepMATZ bird has also made its way into the logo,“ the 31-year-old tells us, smiling. A visit to the shop (Bizetstraße 122) offers the customer the chance to have a unique product custommade. The available fabrics and threads can be combined to your taste. Matzmate also makes cycling caps. Instead of the normal publicity logos, the caps are printed with their own design. When Stefan Matzdorf isn’t busy with his leather products, he’s filling his sketchbook with illustrations, in which caligraphy, text, sketches and embellishments create unusual works of art (www.matzmate-graphics.com).

The creations of Unrath & Strano are well-known for their unique cuts and exclusive fit – The experimental and three-dimensional cutting systems are the hallmark of both designers, Klaus Unrath and Ivan Strano. Through special draping and seam lines, they fashion clothing for confident women. Their 160 squared-metre shop space houses their boutique where they display their „ready to wear“ collection, designed by Unrath & Strano. In the basement is a couture-boudoir where detailed and lovingly-made evening dresses and bridal wear – the label’s signature pieces - are showcased and made to measure.

Pulqueria Mexicana – When Celal Kurum visited the “Casa Azul” during a Mexico-trip in 1995, he was so impressed by the images and the energy of the house, that he not only named the restaurant Frida Kahlo but also recreated the spirit of the house in the restaurant. The blue façade, the red window frames and the earthy wallpaintings highlight his wish to preserve the temperament, the livelihood and especially the myth of the artist. Metaxa Bay

Strandfeeling im GroSSstadt-Dschungel Zwischen East-Side-Gallery, Museumsinsel und Reichstag findet man eine Menge interessanter Strände und Strandbars, die einladen, um die Seele baumeln zu lassen und die Sonne zu genießen.

Berlin ist die Metropole der Strandbars. Keine andere deutsche Stadt bietet so viele attraktive Möglichkeiten, um am Flussufer mit einem Drink in der Hand und dem Sand unter den Füßen zu relaxen.

Die Metaxa Bay befindet sich mitten im Herzen Berlins, am Berliner Hauptbahnhof. Auf einer Fläche von 100 mal 60 Metern feinstem Quarzsand, unter tropischen Palmen und gebettet auf weichen Holzliegen, kann hier zum Rauschen der Spree für ein paar Stunden in eine andere Welt eingetaucht werden. Platz ist genügend vorhanden. Der Oststrand in Friedrichshain lässt mit Palmen und Pizza aus dem neapolitanischen Holzofen wahre Mittelmeer-Gefühle aufkommen. Wem der Strand nicht genügt, findet auf dem zur Bar gehörenden Schiff „Agnes“ sicherlich eine freie Stelle. Hier finden insgesamt über 600 Leute Platz.

Unweit des Oststrandes liegt das YAAM, welches durch Reggeaklänge, urbane Sportarten, respektvolles Miteinander, entspannte Atmosphäre und afrikanisches Essen zu einer einzigartigen Oase im Berliner Stadtbild avanciert ist, die ein internationales Publikum anzieht. Direkt am Halensee, im schönen Grunewald, befindet sich der exklusive Ku´damm Beach. Der beliebte Szene-Treff sorgt dank der ruhigen, etwas versteckten Lage für echte Entspannung, die stilvoll möblierten, auf dem Wasser schwimmenden Pontons, schaffen einen edlen Eindruck. Cocktail in der Hängematte, Sand unter den Füßen und Musik aus den Boxen – willkommen auf dem Badeschiff in Treptow. Auf dem zum Swimming Pool umgebauten Tanker kann geschwommen werden, Sandstrand und Steg bieten Platz zum abschalten.

The Mataxa-Bay is located right at the heart of Berlin – at Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof. “Oststrand” in Friedrichshain ushers in the Mediterranean feel with palm trees and pizza straight out of the Neapolitan wood-fire oven. And if the beach isn’t enough for you, you’ll be sure to find a spot on the bar’s very own ship “Agnes”, which offers a 600-person capacity.

Sipping your cocktail in a hammock, with sand under your feet and music flowing from the speakers: welcome to the “Badeschiff” in Treptow. You can swim in this tanker-turned-pool, while a sandy beach and the deck provide a space to switch off from daily life.

Berlin is a beach-bar metropolis. No other German city offers you so many opportunities to relax on the banks of the river, with a drink in hand and sand between your toes.

Wer beim Besuch im Bergmannkiez auch über den Dächern der Stadt Station machen will, sollte den Mehringdamm überqueren und den Kreuzberg im Viktoriapark erklimmen. Von dessen Schinkel’schem Gipfel aus bietet sich ein tolles Rundumpanorama der Stadt, das Euch das Team von 360° natürlich wärmstens empfiehlt.

Das Wohnviertel rund um die Bergmannstraße wird durch die fast vollständig erhaltene GründerzeitArchitektur geprägt, deren behutsame Sanierung bereits Ende der 70er Jahren ihren Anfang nahm. Durch seine zunehmend multikulturelle Bevölkerung entwickelte der Bergmannkiez zu Westberliner Zeiten das Flair einer südeuropäischen Kleinstadt. Auch wenn in den letzten Jahren verstärkt urbanes Luxuswohnen und edle Lifestyle-Angebote hier Einzug genommen haben, mischt sich der neue Schick mit der Vielseitigkeit gewachsener Strukturen.

Die im Krieg vollständig zerstörte und später wiederaufgebaute Marheineke-Markthalle, die direkt an der Bergmannstraße liegt, beherbergte bis zu ihrer Sanierung 2007 schlichte Stände für den alltäglichen Bedarf. Heute erinnert sie eher an eine LebensmittelBeletage, die die besser betuchte Anwohnerschaft mit Köstlichkeiten versorgt. Vor der alten Markthalle lässt es sich samstags und sonntags auf einem Trödelmarkt hervorragend stöbern. Am Chamissoplatz beeindruckt die kompakte Bebauung mit alten Mietskasernen, an denen sich die kümmerlichen Lebensbedingungen von Arbeitern in der späten Kaiserzeit nachvollziehen lassen. Die originalgetreue Rekonstruktion macht den Platz zu einer beliebten Kulisse für Dreharbeiten historischer FilmSzenen und zum Ziel vieler Stadtführungen. Jeden Samstag setzt hier ein Ökomarkt neue Akzente.

Shoppen auf der Bergmannstraße

Bergmannkiez –Berlin’s variety at its best Bergmannstraße in the district of Kreuzberg is the lively thoroughfare between Mehringdamm and Südstern. With its bold mix of shops, jumble stores, cafes and restaurants, it is - and has been for many years - one of the cult streets of Berlin. Come enjoy Berlin’s diversity at its best in this laid-back neighbourhood atmosphere. The residential area around Bergmannstraße is characterised by the ‘Gründerzeit’ architecture of the buildings, which are almost entirely preserved and which began to undergo minor refurbishments at the end of the 1970s. Due to its increasingly multicultural population, in West Berlin times the Bergmannkiez developed the character of a southern European town. In recent years, the lifestyle here has become more chic and upmarket and as a result, this new stylish living now mixes with the diverse roots.

Situated directly on Bergmannstraße is the Marheineke indoor market, which was completely ruined in the war and then later rebuilt. Before its renovation in 2007, it housed simple stalls selling everyday supplies. Nowadays, however, it is more of a grocery palace, providing the well-heeled residents with a whole range of delicacies. Every Saturday and Sunday in front of the market hall there’s the chance to have a good rummage around at the jumble sale. The impressive Chamissoplatz, with its compact developments of old tenements houses, allows one to imagine the wretched living conditions of the workers in the late Imperial era. The reconstruction is faithful to the original and has become the destination of many a city tour, as well as a popular backdrop for camera crews shooting historical film scenes. The organic market on Saturdays brings even more people here.

To complete your visit to Bergmannkiez, you can always stop off at the Kreuzberg hill to see over the rooftops of the city. Simply cross the Mehringdamm and go up the steps of the hill in Victoria Park where you will discover a fantastic panoramic view of the city, which is, of course, thoroughly recommended to you by the team at 360° Berlin.

Der Stuttgarter Platz Der 1892 so benannte Platz wird von Anwohnern in den guten und den bösen „Stutti“ unterteilt. Der gute „Stutti“ – der östliche Teil des Stuttgarter Platzes- nahe Windscheid-, Rönne- und Leonhardtstraße, zeichnet sich durch eher gehobene Restaurants, viele Cafés und reizvolle Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, sowie einen großzügigen Kinderspielplatz aus, initiiert durch die ersten Westberliner Bürgerinitiativen.

Bohème-Künstler aller Couleur und gutsituierte Bürgerlichkeit mit Zeugungswillen – hier lohnt es sich zu bummeln und Menschen im Café zu beobachten. Traditionelles Handwerk und erlesene Spezialitäten neben Mode, Design und Literatur. Der östliche Stutti hingegen dient eher dem Rotlichtmilieu. (Stadtplan Seite 49)

Hier lohnt sich ein Bummel durch die vielen kleinen Geschäfte. Abseits des großstädtischen Trubels kann man am „Stutti“ in aller Ruhe shoppen. Traditionelles Handwerk und erlesene Spezialitäten finden sich dort neben Mode, Design und Literatur. Der böse „Stutti“ hingegen war für „Bürger“ berüchtigt durch die 68er Wohngemeinschaft „Kommune 1“ und anrüchig durch seine zahlreichen Halbwelt-Etablissements.

Der Spielfilm „Hotte im Paradies“ des Regisseurs Dominik Graf spielt hier und wurde zum Teil mit Originalen aus dem Milieu besetzt. Der Platz wurde von James Hobrecht im Generalbebauungsplan von 1858 angelegt und nach der Überdeckung des Schwarzen Grabens, eines offenen Abwasserkanals, bebaut. Um 1890 erlangte der Platz Bedeutung durch die Inbetriebnahme des Bahnhofs Charlottenburg. Die ersten repräsentativen Wohnhäuser entstanden und es wurden Grünanlagen angelegt , die sogar mit Palmen verschönert wurden. Der Stuttgarter Platz wirkt seit jeher anziehend auf Künstler aller Couleur. In direkter Nähe am Amtsgericht soll Hertha Heuwer 1949 die Currywurst erfunden haben. Heute steht der Platz immer noch für das Leben der Bohème, aber auch zunehmend für gutsituierte Bürgerlichkeit mit Fortpflanzungswillen.

Stuttgarter Platz The inhabitants of Stuttgarter Platz, so named in 1892, divide the square into the good “Stutti” and the evil “Stutti”. The good “Stutti”, the east side which is near to Windscheid, Rönne und Leonhardtstraße, is characterized by sophisticated restaurants, many cafes and attractive shopping opportunities, as well as a spacious children’s play area, installed by the first West Berlin initiative. Here, a stroll through the many small stores is well worth it. Away from the hustle and bustle of the capital, at the Stutti, you can shop in peace. Traditional crafts and exquisite specialities can be found alongside fashion, design and literature. The evil “Stutti”, on the other hand, was notorious for the 1968 political community “Kommune 1”, and had a bad reputation due to the many demimonde establishments. The film “Hotte im Paradies” di-

rected by Dominik Graf is set here, and indeed part of the cast was made up by locals. The square was constructed by James Hobrecht in 1858 using general development plans, and then built up further after the covering of an open drainage canal. Around 1890, the square gained in importance, thanks to the new Charlottenburg train station nearby. The first representative buildings emerged, and green spaces were installed, which were even planted with beautiful palms. Stuttgarter Platz has since been attracting artists of all kinds. In fact, Hertha Heuwer is said to have invented the Currywurst near to the district court, in 1949. Today, the square continues to serve the bohemian lifestyle, but is also increasingly popular with wealthier citizens who wish to settle down and start a family.
