Recycling Deluxe – Ungenutztes und Gebrauchtes neu designt Es ist eine Welt voller außergewöhnlicher Dinge, die man in der Kastanienallee 22 betritt. Denn bei genauerem Hinsehen stellt man fest, dass Wohnaccessoires, Kleidung und Taschen ihren Ursprung recycelten Materialien verdanken: Mützen und Hüte sind aus alten Jute-Kaffeesäcken, Portemonnaies und Taschen aus LKW-Schläuchen oder FischfutterSäcken und Zehensandalen (flip flops) haben Sohlen aus Motorradreifen. Die Geschäftsinhaber nennen ihren Laden den ersten Upcycling-Concept-Store. Alles, was es hier zu kaufen gibt, wurde aus Abfallprodukten und nutzlos gewordenen Stoffen gefertigt. „Man kann bei den neu entstandenen Gebrauchsgegenständen (UPCYCLING UNIKATEN) sehen, aus was sie hergestellt worden sind“, erklärt Eric Pieper. Beim Upcycling werden Materialien nicht nur wiederverwertet, sondern durch die kreative Verarbeitung auch aufgewertet. Stanislaus Teichmann und er lernten sich an der Flensburger Universität kennen, wo der eine International Management und der andere Maschinenbau studierte. Beide verband die Leidenschaft fürs Reisen und als man im Sommer 2010 zusammen saß, entspann sich zwischen den Freunden die Idee, ein gemeinsames Geschäft aufzumachen. „Es sollte etwas außerhalb des Mainstream sein, etwas, dass es noch nicht gab“, erzählt Eric.

Intelligentes Umgehen mit Ressourcen und bewusstes Konsumieren sind heute von Bedeutung und „Nachhaltigkeit“ ist zum Schlagwort geworden. Die Gründer von Recycling Deluxe knüpften daran an und entschieden sich, handgefertigte und hochwertige Artikel aus Recyclingmaterial anzubieten, die sich der Wegwerfgesellschaft mit ihren kurzlebigen Konsumgütern widersetzten. „Die Anfangszeit war spannend“, erinnert sich Eric Pieper. „Wir haben viel recherchiert und tolle Reisen wie beispielsweise nach Kambodscha gemacht.“ Zunächst verkauften sie ihre direkten Importe auf Weihnachtsmärkten und Festivals und als es gut lief, eröffneten sie im April 2013 das Ladengeschäft Recycling Deluxe, dessen stylishe Einrichtung ganz dem Thema, Gebrauchtes und Benutztes weiterzuverwerten, folgt. Auf zwei Etagen findet man individuelles Recyclingdesign, das weltweit unter dem Aspekt des fairen Handels produziert wurde – von Kronkorken-Ohrringen bis hin zu Kronleuchtern aus Drahtbügeln und Fahrradspeichen. Neben dem schönen Laden soll es bis Herbst 2013 noch ein Recycling-Deluxe-Onlineshop geben.

Recycling Deluxe – a fresh take on New and Used Stepping into Kastanienallee 22, you encounter a world of most extraordinary things. It is perhaps only on second glance that you would notice that all the clothing, bags and items for the home find their origin in recycled materials: hats are made of old jute coffee sacks, wallets and bags from truck tubes or fish-food packaging and flip-flops have soles made out of motorcycle tyres. The shop’s owners call Recycling Deluxe the first upcycling concept store. Everything which the shop sells is created out of waste and materials which were no longer functional. “With the upcycled objects, you can tell what they’ve been made from,” Eric Pieper tells us. Upcycling is not defined purely by the reuse of materials – the creative process actually injects into them a new and better value. Stanislaus Teichmann and Eric Pieper met at the University of Flensburg where they were studying courses in International Management and Mechanical Engineering respectively. They were united by their love for travelling and whilst hanging out in the summer of 2010, the friends floated the idea of opening a shop together. “The idea was to be something a little less mainstream – something which didn’t already exist,” Eric says. Intelligent use of resources and conscious consumption are important in today’s world and “sustai-

nability” is the word of the moment. The founders of Recycling Deluxe latched on to this idea and decided to sell high-quality handmade goods, made from recycled materials. These goods would go against the throw-away culture in which products are shortlived. “When we started, it was a real buzz for us,” remembers Eric Pieper. “We did a lot of research and made some great trips including to Cambodia.” Following that, they started selling their direct imports at Christmas markets and festivals. In April 2013, when that had gone well, they opened their store Recycling Deluxe. Its stylish set-up follows through on the concept of used and second-hand to a tee. Across two floors, you can find recycled design which has been produced in fair-trade conditions across the world – from bottle-top earrings to chandeliers created from coat hangers and bicycle spokes. From here, they hope to open an online shop for Recycling Deluxe, expected by autumn 2013.

Dost – Crossover zwischen Streetwear, Fashion und Subkultur Es ist schön Freunde zu haben – und wer Design liebt und in Sachen Trends und Mode vorn dabei ist, für den lohnt es sich bei DOST (türkisch für Freund) vorbeizuschauen und auf einen guten Freund zu treffen. DOST liegt auf der Kastanienallee direkt gegenüber vom ABOVE-Store, dem anderen Herzstück von den Betreibern Mike Gülal und Michael Müller. ABOVE hat sich in Berlin etabliert und steht für angesagte StreetwearKollektionen und coole Sneaker. Seit dem 2. Mai 2013 gibt es nun DOST, in dem auf 90 Quadratmetern vor holzvertäfelten Wänden und auf einfachen Holz-Sideboards Mode von Brands wie WoodWood, Uniforms for the Dedicated oder Libertine-Libertine präsentiert wird. Die Skater- und SurfSzene bleibt dabei stilprägend, auch wenn sich das weltweit zusammengetragene Sortiment eleganter, reifer und abgeklärter zeigt. „Unserem Stil sind wir treu geblieben. DOST ist Streetwear, die erwachsener ist, eine Mischung aus Fashion und Street, sozusagen Grown-up-Streetwear“, erklärt Mike. Der einstige Skater hat in Köln Kommunikationswissenschaften studiert und nach dem Studium in einem Skaterladen gearbeitet. Weil es Spaß machte, ist er von der Aushilfe bis zum Filialleiter aufgestiegen und im Einzelhandel geblieben. 2003 ging Mike nach Berlin und arbeitete fünf Jahre für eine Handelsagentur, präsentierte Kollektionen und war viel unterwegs. Mit seinem Geschäftpartner Michael Müller verbin-

det ihn eine langjährige Freundschaft. Micha betrieb zuvor unter anderem in Dortmund und Köln SecondHand-Läden. Er gab den Anstoß für den ersten gemeinsamen Laden LE GANG 2007, in dem sie eine feine Auswahl an Streetwear anboten, die in Berlin sonst nicht zu finden war. Die Betreiber von DOST lieben das, was sie machen. Während Mike für das Sortiment zuständig ist, bei Designern, Präsentationen und auf der Straße schaut, was angesagt ist, kümmert sich Micha um das Kreativ-Gestalterische und das Styling des Ladens. Beide beraten Kunden im Store und stehen mit ihrem Wissen zur Seite. Neben Klamotten und Sneaker für Frauen und Männer gibt es im Shop auch eine Auswahl an Accessoires, Sonnenbrillen, Kopfhörern, iPhone-Hüllen und ArtBooks. Wer wissen will, was die Pop-Avantgarde demnächst in Berlin, Stockholm oder London trägt und sich ein neues Outfit verpassen will, sollte unbedingt den DOST-Store einen Besuch abstatten. Dost – where streetwear, fashion and sub-culture meet It’s nice to have friends. For design lovers and those who keep on top of trends and fashion, it’s worth swinging by DOST (“friend” in Turkish) to make a new friend. DOST is on Kastanienallee, directly across from ABOVE, owners Mike Gülal and Michael Mülller’s other baby. ABOVE has established itself on the Berlin scene and is known for its hotly tipped streetwear collections and cool sneakers. On May 2nd 2013, DOST was born. It spans 90 square metres with wood-panelled walls and simple wooden sideboards, and presents us with brands such as WoodWood, Uniforms for the Dedicated and Libertine-Libertine. Skate and surf influences remain present though the collection, of various global origins, appears more elegant, mature and confident. “We’ve remained true to our style. DOST is streetwear which has evolved a little – a mix of fashion and streetwear. Grown-up streetwear, so to speak,” Mike explains. A skater himself, he studied Communications in Cologne, working in a skateshop after he graduated. He enjoyed it so much that he has made it from being a helping hand to store manager, choosing to remain in retail. In 2003, Mike came to Berlin and worked for five years as a commercial agent, presenting collections and being constantly on-the-go. His business partner Michael Müller had been a long-time friend. Micha had previously worked in Dortmund and Co-

logne (to name just two of the locations) in secondhand shops and had helped give their first retail project together - LE GANG - a jump-start in 2007. The store presented a fine selection of streetwear, unique to Berlin. The owners of DOST love what they do. Whilst Mike is responsible for curating their collection, looking to designers, presentations and the streets for what’s hot, Micha looks after their creative set-up and the design of the store itself. Both of them advise customers on the shop floor and are armed and ready with knowledge. Besides clothes and sneakers for men and women, the shop has a selection of accessories, sunglasses, headphones, iPhone cases and art books. For those who are interested in the latest happenings on the popular side of avant garde in Berlin, Stockholm and London – and are keen to get their hands on an outfit to match – should definitely pay a visit to DOST.

Viel Platz für Design und Schräges – bei Luxus International Luxus International – das klingt nach Glamour und Jetset und dabei dreht sich im Concept-Store alles um Berlin und „junge Kreative“. Seit über zehn Jahren bietet Sebastian Mücke in seinem Laden Designern, Bastlern und Künstlern eine Plattform, um ihre Werke in kleiner Stückzahl zu verkaufen. Die Kreativen mieten sich für 7,50 Euro im Monat ein Fach in einem Regal, in dem sie ihre Unikate präsentieren. Auf einem Schildchen informieren die Urheber darüber, wo man sie in Berlin oft findet oder an welchem Ort in der Stadt sie am liebsten sind. Man braucht Zeit, um alles zu entdecken. Es gibt zum Beispiel handbemalte Holzbroschen von Kiezmiez, bunte Sperrholz-Hirschköpfe, Origami-Ohrringe und Kunstdrucke von Potma und Mateo. Ob Nützliches, Schönes oder Tinnef – hier findet man noch das ultimative Berlin-Mitbringsel oder Geschenk. „Bei uns gibt es alles aus Berlin, für Berlin und in Berlin Geschaffenes“, erklärt der Gründer Sebastian Mücke. Die Idee entwickelte sich, als Mücke in der Raumerstraße in Prenzlauer Berg Zwischennutzungen und kulturelle Events organisierte und Kreative aus Bereichen wie Mode, Popmusik und Design traf. „Mir wurde klar, dass es in Berlin viele Leute gibt, die tolle Dinge produzierten, die aber oft keine Vertriebsmöglichkeiten dafür haben“, erzählt er. Das sollte sich mit Luxus International ändern. Sein Konzept, in einem Geschäft einzelne Boxen als Verkaufsfläche

zu vermieten, kam schließlich an und fand auch Nachahmer. Seit der Eröffnung 2002 hat Luxus International über Tausend Kreativen die Möglichkeit zur Präsentation gegeben. Vor etwa sechs Monaten ist der Concept-Store umgezogen. Die Verkaufsfläche hat sich verdoppelt und Luxus International bietet seitdem seine Lifestyleund Geschenkartikel einige Hausnummern weiter in der Kastanienallee 84 an. Sebastian Mücke, der Ökonomie studiert hat, bleibt weiterhin umtriebig. Er führt außerdem den Hutladen „Heimat Berlin“, organisiert Veranstaltungen, war Botschafter für die BeBerlin-Imagekampagne und engagiert sich in einer Initiative für die Zukunft der Kastanienallee. Dass man auf der Kastanienallee neben Modegeschäften und Restaurants auch noch ein Stück Berliner Subkultur finden kann, dafür sorgt unter anderem sein Konzeptladen.

Luxus International – where there’s space for design and the unusual The name Luxus International (Luxury International) smacks of glamour and the jet-set lifestyle. Yet this concept store is based entirely on Berlin and the ‘young creative’. For more than ten years now, Sebastian Mücke’s store has offered designers, craftsmen and artists a platform from which to sell their work in small quantities. These creative spirits rent a shelf for €7.50 a month where they can present their unique pieces. The artists use little signs to tell us whereabouts in Berlin they can often be found or where their favourite bit of the city is. You need time to discover everything. For example, there are wooden brooches from the local area, colourful stag’s heads made from ply wood, origami earrings and art prints by Potma and Mateo. Whether functional, beautiful or downright trashy, this is the place to find the ultimate Berlin souvenir or present. “Our store has everything from Berlin, for Berlin and made in Berlin,” the founder Sebastian Mücke explains. The idea first came about when Mücke was organising cultural events in Prenzlauer Berg’s Raumerstraße, meeting creatives from the worlds of fashion, pop music and design along the way. “It became obvious to me that Berlin has a lot of people who make amazing stuff but who often have no way to sell it,” Sebastian tells us. Luxus International is a way to change this. Its concept – renting out boxes

as mini shop floors, all under one store roof – was a lightbulb moment and wasn’t without its imitators either. Since its opening in 2002, Luxus International has given over 1000 creatives an opportunity to present their work. About six months ago, their concept store moved location. Their shop floor is now twice the size and Luxus International offers its lifestyle and gift ideas just a few buildings down, Kastanienallee 84. Sebastian Mücke, who studied economics, hasn’t stopped going. He’s also in charge of the hat shop “Heimat Berlin”, organises events, was ambassador of the be Berlin campaign and is also involved in an initiative concerning the future of Kastanienallee. Amongst other things, this concept store sees to it that one can still find a piece of Berlin subculture amongst all the fashion stores and restaurants on Kastanienallee.

Berlin ist die Metropole der Strandbars. Keine andere deutsche Stadt bietet so viele attraktive Möglichkeiten, um am Flussufer mit einem Drink in der Hand und dem Sand unter den Füßen zu relaxen.

Die Metaxa Bay befindet sich mitten im Herzen Berlins, am Berliner Hauptbahnhof. Auf einer Fläche von 100 mal 60 Metern feinstem Quarzsand, unter tropischen Palmen und gebettet auf weichen Holzliegen, kann hier zum Rauschen der Spree für ein paar Stunden in eine andere Welt eingetaucht werden. Lohnenswert ist es auch, einen Abstecher in die Querstraßen der Allee zu unternehmen. In der Oderberger Straße, die am südlichen Eingang zum Mauerpark abschließt, geht es ähnlich lebendig, doch weniger trendverliebt zu.

Seit Jahren genießt die Kastanienallee den Ruf eine Trendmeile zu sein – Fashion- und Designläden haben sich hier niedergelassen, und sie gilt als Treffpunkt für hippe Berliner und internationale Szenetouristen, was ihr den Spitznamen „Castingallee“ einbrachte. Sie ist jedoch nicht edel und glatt, sondern steckt voller freundlicher Ideen, harter Brüche und preiswerter Kreativität. Für viele Flaneure ist die Kastanienallee die beste Gegend für einen berlintypischen ShoppingBummel. Zwischen den kleinen originellen Läden gibt es jede Menge Lokale, von denen aus sich das lässige bis stylische Treiben auf dem alten Pflaster entspannt betrachten lässt. 1826 wurde die Kastanienallee von Wilhelm Griebenow angelegt; die Bepflanzung mit Rosskastanien als Alleebäume verlieh ihr den Namen. Berlins ältester Biergarten, der 1852 eröffnete Prater mit seiner bewegten Geschichte, ist hier immer noch zu finden. Die gründerzeitlichen Mietskasernen entlang der Straße

und ihre faszinierende Hinterhofwelt sind längst zu Spekulationsobjekten der Immobilienwirtschaft geworden. Zu Zeiten der DDR blieb die Gegend weitgehend unbeachtet. Die zunehmend verfallenden Häuser dienten vielen jungen Menschen als preiswerte Wohnmöglichkeit. Künstler und politisch Unbequeme fanden in der Unübersichtlichkeit der größtenteils erhaltenen, aber meist ruinösen Baustrukturen tolerierte Refugien und Arbeitsmöglichkeiten. Nach dem Mauerfall wurden Häuser besetzt, neue Ladenprojekte und Kulturorte entstanden. Ein rasanter Wandel begann als die ersten Häuser saniert wurden. Es wurde Teil eines angesagten Lebensstils hier auszugehen, oder gar zu wohnen. Unter Touristen sprach sich die Faszination der Straße herum. Inzwischen ist Englisch und Spanisch mindestens genauso häufig auf den breiten Gehwegen zu hören wie Deutsch.

Prenzlauer Berg’s Kastanienallee For many years, Kastanienallee has enjoyed the reputation of being a fashionable street. Clothing and design shops have established themselves here, and it’s known as a meeting point for trendy Berliners and international scene seekers; which is why it has earned the nickname ’Castingallee’. It is, however, anything but pricey and pretentious. Kastanienallee is slightly worn around the edges, full of charming ideas and brimming with creativity at a bargain price. For many, it is the place-to-go for a spot of typical Berlin window shopping. In between the small shops there are lots of bars and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy watching the stylish crowds wander along the old pavements. Kastanienallee was laid out by Wilhelm Griebenow in 1826 and takes its name from the horse chestnut trees which were planted to line the avenue. Here you can find Berlin’s oldest beer garden, the ‘Prater’, which was opened in 1853 and has an eventful history. The

’Gründerzeit‘ buildings along the street, with their fascinating world of rear courtyards, have long been an object of great interest for the real estate market. In the time of the GDR, the area remained largely unnoticed. The increasingly dilapidated buildings served many young people as inexpensive places to live. Artists and others who were ‘politically inconvenient’ found tolerable refuge and working opportunities within the complexity of the structures which had survived the war but were nevertheless mostly ruinous. After the fall of the wall, several buildings were occupied by squatters, resulting in the creation of new shops and cultural venues. A rapid transformation began as the first buildings were renovated: going out here or living here became part of a cool lifestyle. Among the tourists, word got around about this fascinating street. Since then, you are just as likely to hear English or Spanish on the wide walkways as German.

Kastanienallee / Eberswalder Straße

It is also worth taking a short detour into the side streets of the Allee. Oderberger Straße, for example, which leads to the southern entrance of the Mauerpark, is less well-known but just as lively.

Die im Krieg vollständig zerstörte und später wiederaufgebaute Marheineke-Markthalle, die direkt an der Bergmannstraße liegt, beherbergte bis zu ihrer Sanierung 2007 schlichte Stände für den alltäglichen Bedarf. Heute erinnert sie eher an eine LebensmittelBeletage, die die besser betuchte Anwohnerschaft mit Köstlichkeiten versorgt. Vor der alten Markthalle lässt es sich samstags und sonntags auf einem Trödelmarkt hervorragend stöbern. Am Chamissoplatz beeindruckt die kompakte Bebauung mit alten Mietskasernen, an denen sich die kümmerlichen Lebensbedingungen von Arbeitern in der späten Kaiserzeit nachvollziehen lassen. Die originalgetreue Rekonstruktion macht den Platz zu einer beliebten Kulisse für Dreharbeiten historischer FilmSzenen und zum Ziel vieler Stadtführungen. Jeden Samstag setzt hier ein Ökomarkt neue Akzente.

Due to its increasingly multicultural population, in West Berlin times the Bergmannkiez developed the character of a southern European town. In recent years, the lifestyle here has become more chic and upmarket and as a result, this new stylish living now mixes with the diverse roots.

Situated directly on Bergmannstraße is the Marheineke indoor market, which was completely ruined in the war and then later rebuilt. Before its renovation in 2007, it housed simple stalls selling everyday supplies. Nowadays, however, it is more of a grocery palace, providing the well-heeled residents with a whole range of delicacies. Every Saturday and Sunday in front of the market hall there’s the chance to have a good rummage around at the jumble sale. The impressive Chamissoplatz, with its compact developments of old tenement houses, allows one to imagine the wretched living conditions of the workers in the late Imperial era. The reconstruction is faithful to the original and has become the destination of many a city tour, as well as a popular backdrop for camera crews shooting historical film scenes. The organic market on Saturdays brings even more people here.

To complete your visit to Bergmannkiez, you can always stop off at the Kreuzberg hill to see over the rooftops of the city. Simply cross the Mehringdamm and go up the steps of the hill in Victoria Park where you will discover a fantastic panoramic view of the city, which is, of course, thoroughly recommended to you by the team at 360° Berlin.
