the PokketmIxer – the Party In your hands! Als sich Christian Komm auf einer längeren Autofahrt von Berlin nach Amsterdam befand, waren sich seine Mitfahrer uneins, wer nun seine Musiksammlung und somit seinen MP3-Player in das Autoradio stecken durfte. Nach der Reise begab sich der gelernte Radio- und Fernsehtechniker auf die Suche nach einem Mini-DJ-Mischpult, das keinen Strom verbraucht und an das man zwei MP3-Player anschließen kann. Die Suche war erfolglos und so war die Idee für das erste Mobile-Mischpult der Welt geboren. Im Jahr 2010 wurde der erste Prototyp gebaut und Christian Komm startete gemeinsam mit Robert Thomalla die Produktion des Pokketmixer in einer Berliner Werkstatt. Kurz darauf wurde der Flagship-Store in der Schönhauser Allee 44a eröffnet; dieser dient als Büro, Showroom und Verkaufsfläche der bunten Mixer.

When Christian Komm found himself on a long car ride from Berlin to Amsterdam, his fellow journeymen were undecided on who to let put their MP3 player – and thus their own music collection – into the car radio. After the journey, along came a professional radio and television technician, hunting for a mini DJ mixer which used no electricity and hooked up to two MP3 players at once. The search was to no avail and thus was born the idea for the first mobile mixer the world has ever seen. In 2010, the first prototype was constructed and Christian Komm launched the production of the PoKKETMIXER together with Robert Thomalla in a Berlin workshop. Shortly after this, the flagship store opened at Schönhauser Allee 44a, serving as the office, showroom and sales floor for the colourful mixer.

Außerdem hält Ben Fachwissen parat, aus welchem Material die Brillen bestehen, wie sie verarbeitet sind, zur Qualität, zur Farbe, zum Design und warum einige Modelle weltweit so beliebt und nachgefragt sind. Eine große Vielfalt von über 300 Einzelstücken wird im Shop in der Eberswalder Straße angeboten. Das ausgestellte optiKing-Angebot wird zusätzlich ergänzt durch die noch größere Auswahl im optiKing

Online-Shop. Ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall. Selbstverständlich können sämtliche Brillen der Webseite auf Anfrage auch im Laden angeschaut und aufprobiert werden. Get the retro look – vintage glasses at optiking At optiKing, you’ll find trendy, extravagant and unusual glasses and sunglasses from a long-gone era which have been produced with quality craftsmanship with much love, patience and care. The assortment begins with the ‘50s and ranges up to the ‘90s. All glasses are unworn and are rare specimens or unique pieces from old warehouse stock. Was braucht man für die Heimzucht? Wer sich durch die Straßen des LSD-Dreiecks im Prenzlauer Berg treiben lässt, der landet vielleicht mit großen Augen vor dem Schaufenster von Heimzucht. Der eigenwillige Frauenmode-Shop fällt auf, denn eine Ziege steht im extravagant dekorierten Fenster. Nina Jacquemard hat hier eine tolle Auswahl an Brands wie Nümph, ICHI und kleine Londoner Labels zusammengetragen und kombiniert die Kleidungsstücke mit ungewöhnlichem Schmuck, Taschen und vielen anderen Accessoires. Im Laden findet Platz, was ihr gefällt, das können auch schon mal selbst gestrickte Schals, Vasen oder Bücher sein. Nina und Sadoma

Um immer wieder Neues zu finden, ist die Geschäftsinhaberin viel unterwegs. Sie hat Spaß am Aussuchen und Einkaufen der neuen Kollektionen auf Messen oder in Showrooms. Und findet es immer wieder spannend, wie Fashion das Erscheinungsbild der Menschen verändern kann. Alltagstauglich soll die Mode sein und dennoch speziell und sexy. „Mein Motto”, sagt Nina, „ist aussehen wie im Ballkleid und sich fühlen wie im Jogginganzug.“ Als Nina Jacquemard 2004 den Laden übernahm, war es ein Secondhandshop, den drei Musiker aufgebaut hatten. Sie hatte den Zettel, mit dem sie nach einem Nachfolger suchten, am Zionskirchplatz entdeckt. Nach Stationen unter anderem in Düsseldorf und Hamburg und dem Filmstudium in London wollte sie raus aus Filmgeschäft und Werbebranche. Der Shop

sollte ihr Leben finanzieren. Und er war auch gedacht als Galerie, in der Videos, Filme und Kunstwerke gezeigt werden. 2006 flogen die Vintage-Sachen aus dem Laden hinaus und stattdessen gab es eine neue Einrichtung und Labels. Aus den übriggebliebenen Resten entstand mitten im Shop eine große Installation aus Textilien. Ein wenig Trash und Kunst ist geblieben. Nina Jacquemards Blick auf Fashion, sagt sie, sei weniger ernst. „Der Laden hat sich mit der Zeit zu einer eigenen Persönlichkeit entwickelt. Heimzucht selbst ist eine Art Kunstwerk geworden, das sich auf die Straße auswirkt und in den public space eingreift.“ Auch wenn der Kunstgedanke nicht vorrangig ist, aus vorgegebenen Denkmustern auszubrechen, sei weiterhin wichtig. Die Heimzucht-Welt ist heute elegant, alltäglich und exzentrisch zugleich. Man kann ungestört stöbern und freut sich, wenn man ein neues Lieblingsteil entdeckt. Wer will, kann sich beraten und einmal ganz anders ausstaffieren lassen. Heimzucht wächst und gedeiht. Für nächstes Jahr ist ein Ableger in Konstanz geplant.

What do you need to make a home? Wander the streets of Prenzlauer Berg’s “LSD Triangle” you may land wide-eyed in front of Heimzucht’s shop window. The unique women’s fashion shop is unmissable with a goat displayed in its extravagantly decorated window. Nina Jacquemard has brought together a fantastic selection of brands such as Nümph, ICHI and small London labels, combining these with unusual jewellery, bags and many other accessories. Whatever she likes has a space in the shop, be it knitted scarves, vases or books. The shop’s owner is constantly on the hunt for new things. She loves picking out new pieces and shopping for collections at fairs or in showrooms. She continues to find it exciting how fashion can change the whole feel of a person. Fashion should be for every day life while also being special and sexy. “My motto,” Nina says, “its to look like I’m in a ball gown but feel like I’m in a tracksuit.” When Nina Jacquemard took over the store in 2004, it was a second-hand shop started by three musicians. She had discovered the little advert for a new owner at Zionskirchplatz. After stopping through Düsseldorf, Hamburg and a film degree in London, she wanted out of the film and advertising industry. The shop would help her break even and was also intended as a gallery where videos, films and artwork could be exhibited.

In 2006, she decided that vintage would no longer be part of the store’s offerings and instead it would be set up anew with different labels being brought in. The leftovers from the old shop became a large textile installation which stands right at the shop’s centre – a little trash and art remained. Nina Jacquemard’s view on fashion, she says, is less serious now. “The shop developed its own personality. Heimzucht itself has become a piece of art which looks out onto the street and reaches into the public space.” Even if the artistic concept isn’t top priority, breaking out of prescriptive ways of thinking continues to be important. The world of Heimzucht today is elegant, made for the every day but also somewhat eccentric. You can poke around the place undisturbed and be delighted when you stumble across a new favourite piece. Anyone can get advice and be kitted out a little differently. And Heimzucht is flourishing. Next year they open in Konstanz.

Popova Fashion Design versetzt in Schwingungen Popova Fashion ist Mode aus Berlin – also nicht ganz so weit aus dem Osten, wie der Name zunächst vermuten lässt. Julia Tietze entwirft in Kreuzberg Fashion, die Energie ausstrahlt, die geradlinig und doch sexy ist. Durch ihre Kollektionen zieht sich ein roter Faden: die Kleidung umspielt den Körper und illustriert seine Bewegungen. Ein Teil des Schaffensprozesses bleibt immer transparent, wodurch die Kreationen manuell-experimentell geprägt sind. Julia Tietze kreiert ihre Unikate und Kleinauflagen aus natürlichen Materialien und setzt dabei auf Einmaligkeit. Sie sagt, ihre Mode bewege und sei umgekehrt auch für Köpfe, die bewegen. Es geht bei Fashion schon lange nicht mehr darum, bloß zu verhüllen. Bei Popova ist Mode ein kontextübergreifendes Statement und bleibt doch angenehm unprätentiös und praktisch. So unangepasst und experimentell wie die Mode präsentieren sich auch Julias Shows, die sie als Happenings arrangiert, in denen sich Fashion, Performance, Musik, Projektion und Produktion ergänzen. Julia ist die Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Themen und Prozessen wichtig. Ihr ehrlicher und kritischer Blick darauf fließt in ihre Arbeiten ein und verleiht ihnen erst Sinn. Ihre Kreationen entspringen inneren Haltungen oder konkreten äußeren Anlässen.

Julia Tietze ist Autodidaktin und studierte zunächst Kulturwissenschaften. Während ihrer Zeit in Barcelona entdeckte sie die perfekte Ausdrucksmöglichkeit für ihre Kreativität. Sie stolperte über eine Nähmaschine und experimentierte von da an mit selbstgeschneiderten Klamotten. Beflügelt vom positiven Feedback entwickelten sich die Kleidungsstücke schon bald zum Selbstläufer. Julia knüpfte die richtigen Kontakte und nach einem halben Jahr stellte sie ihre erste Modenschau auf die Beine. Auch in Berlin wurde Julia Teil der Szene. Sie arbeitete als Stylistin und im Bereich Konzeption und Art Direction und entwickelte ihre Mode konsequent weiter. Ihre Entwürfe wurden klarer, ausgewogener und sie fand zu ihrem künstlerischen Ausdruck. Julias Tietzes Entwürfe sind heute die Symbiose von experimentell und leger, von seriös und expressiv. Inzwischen präsentiert Popova jährlich zwei neue Kollektionen, ist seit 2011 fester Bestandteil der But & Better und nimmt das Ausland ins Visier.

Popova Fashion Design sets itself into motion Popova Fashion was born in Berlin – so it’s not from quite as far east as its name would suggest. Julia Tiezte creates Kreuzberg Fashion which radiates a certain energy. It’s straightforward but still has something sexy about it. There’s a golden thread which runs through her collections: the clothing works with the body, illustrating its movements. A part of the creative process always remains transparent, giving these works of fashion an experimental touch. Julia Tietze creates her singular pieces and shortrun items from natural materials and focuses on their unique qualities. She says that her fashion moves and conversely is also for minds which move. Fashion is no longer merely about putting clothes on a body. At Popova, fashion is a statement which transcends its context and yet remains pleasant, unpretentious and practical. Julia’s shows prove to be as raw and experimental as the fashion itself. She intends them to be events at which fashion, performance, music, projection and production compliment one another. Engagement with societal topics and processes is important to Julia. Her honest and critical view on these things flows naturally into her works and gives them their meaning. Her creations transcend both privately considered attitudes and concrete, external reasoning.

Julia Tietze is self-taught and her first degree was in Cultural Studies. During her time in Barcelona, she discovered the perfect mode of expression for her creativity. She stumbled across a sewing machine and from that point started experimenting with tailoring her own clothes. Encouraged by positive feedback, these pieces of clothing soon became fastselling items. Julia connected with the right people and after six months, she put her own fashion show together. Julia also became part of the scene in Berlin. She worked as a stylist in the field of conception and art direction, steadily building on her fashion work. Her designs were clearer, more balanced and she fully developed her artistic expression. Today, Julia Tietze’s designs are the collision point of experimental and casual, of earnest and expressive. In the meanwhile, Popova has started presenting two new collections every year and has been a fixture of But & Better, while also keeping an eye on the international scene.

In Berlin gibt es über 20 Weihnachtsmärkte, vom ökologischen bis hin zum glamourösen. Jeder Kiez hat seinen eigenen mit individuellem Flair. Eine vorweihnachtliche Reise über die verschiedenen Berliner Märkte lohnt allemal!

An den vier Adventswochenenden findet der 17. Umwelt- und Weihnachtsmarkt in der Sophienstraße am Hackeschen Markt statt. In gemütlichem Ambiente können auf Berlins ältesten erhaltenen Straßen Kunsthandwerk und Produkte aus fairem Handel sowie vegetarische und biologische Köstlichkeiten gekauft und probiert werden. Mit einem Teil des Erlöses werden 10.000 Bäume in Nepal gepflanzt.

Mit seiner nordisch-skandinavischen Ausrichtung gilt der Lucia Weihnachtsmarkt als einer der gemütlichsten Berlins. Inmitten des historischen Bauensembles der KulturBrauerei können sich Besucher vom 26.11. bis 23.12. an Schwedenfeuern wärmen, Kettenkarussell fahren oder Bunge Trampolin springen. Allerlei Köstlichkeiten, Kunsthandwerk und Musik aus dem Norden Europas runden den Besuch ab.

Über 600.000 Besucher tummeln sich jährlich auf dem prachtvollen WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt und bestaunen den glanzvollen Weihnachtsbaum, beleuchtete historische Gebäude und mehr als 150 Aussteller. Origami, Flachsstickerei, Lederkunst, Holzschnitzerei u.v.m. können hier bestaunt werden. Sowohl traditionelle Leckereien, als auch die gehobene Gastronomie begeistern vom 26.11. bis 31.12. mit einem vielfältigen Angebot auf einem der schönsten Plätze Berlins.

Der Spandauer Weihnachtsmarkt am Rathaus Spandau besitzt nicht nur den größten virtuellen Adventskalender der Welt, sondern auch einen sprechenden dreidimensionalen Elch, der jede Menge Lustiges erzählt. Von duftenden Mandeln über fangfrischen Ostsee-Fisch bis zu selbst gemachtem Glühwein und mehr als 30 Schausteller-Attraktionen erleben Besucher vom 28.11. bis 28.12. den „Spandauer Weihnachtstraum“ in angenehmer Atmosphäre.

Christmas in the Capital On the four weekends of advent, the 17th Environmental and Christmas Market on Sophienstraße at Hackescher Markt will take place. In this cosy setting, you can try and buy fairtrade, artisan crafts and products as well as vegetarian and organic delicacies on Berlin’s oldest streets. Part of the profit goes to planting 10,000 trees in Nepal. Its Nordic-Scandinavian focus makes the Lucia Christmas Market one of the finest in Berlin. Amid the historic setting of the Kulturbrauerei, from 26/11 to 23/12 visitors can warm themselves by Swedish fires, ride chairoplanes or jump on bungee trampolines. Spandau’s Christmas Market at Rathaus Spandau has not only the biggest virtual advent calendar in the world but also a speaking, three-dimensional, story-telling moose. From aromatic almonds to freshly-caught fish from the Baltic Sea, home-made Glühwein and more than 30 carnival attractions, visitors can experience the “Spandau Christmas Dream” from 28/11 to 28/12 in a cosy setting.

Der legendäre „Boxi“ mit seiner zentralen Liegewiese gilt als Wahrzeichen und Lieblingstreffpunkt der Friedrichshainer. In den vielen Straßen und Gassen rund um den Boxhagener Platz gibt es jede Menge hippe Läden und Lokale. Gerade die Simon-Dach-Straße wird für ihre internationale Gastronomie gerühmt, und ist ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel in den Abend- und Nachtstunden.

The Sunday flea-market shows an illustrious mini-population with a great mix of values and lifestyles. The streets and alleys around the square of Boxhagener Platz are home to many cool shops, restaurants and bars. Indeed, Simon-Dach-Strasse is famed for its international gastronomy, as well as being a popular evening and night-time destination. Grünberger, Wühlisch, Krossener und Gärtner Straße, on the other hand, stand for extravagant shopping flair. Small Berlin labels, alongside bigger brands, present their unusual collections for a cosmopolitan, urban public. Visitors from all over the world, who stay in the nearby hotels and hostels, cherish the picturesque atmosphere of the former working-

class East. Due to the rise in industry, the village of Boxhagen, first mentioned in 1591, rapidly became one of Berlin’s most densely populated districts. Even in the Helenenhof housing development for civil servants and the Knoorpromenade, built in 1914 for wealthy citizens, the area retained its proletarian face into the post-wall period, with its turbulent upheavals, squatting and expensive renovations. Today, the bright neighbourhood surrounding the ‘Boxi’ is still characterized by those years of change during reunification. One of the last houses occupied by squatters can be found directly on the square. The bright and diverse area surrounding Boxhagener Platz is best discovered on foot. There are probably more pubs, bars and restaurants in Simon-Dach-Straße than in any other street in Berlin, and the adjacent streets boast a great variety of boutiques, stores and individual shops. Hackescher Markt Der Hackesche Markt befindet sich inmitten eines pulsierenden Viertels im Zentrum Berlins. Vielfältige kulturelle Angebote, die Nähe zur Museumsinsel, historische Gebäude im Scheunenviertel und vor allem das große Shopping-Angebot machen diesen Ort zu einem Berliner Hotspot. Um den Hackeschen Markt haben sich internationale Big Brands eingerichtet.

Lohnenswert ist auch ein Abstecher in Nebenstraßen. In der Auguststraße (früher „Scheunenviertel“), finden sich viele Galerien und Showrooms nationaler & internationaler Künstler, in der Oranienburger Straße die ehemals größte Synagoge Europas . (Stadtplan Seite 48)

In den Seitenstraßen wie der Neuen und Alten Schönhauser Straße oder der Münzstraße findet man aber auch junge Labels und coole Shops. Abseits der Touristenmeilen, wie der Oranienburger Straße, kann der Nachtschwärmer auf kleine Clubs und Bars treffen. Auf seiner Entdeckungsreise wird er auf angesagte Lounges oder Cocktailbars treffen und von der kulinarischen Vielfalt der Berliner Restaurants überrascht sein. Gerade in dieser Berliner Gegend liegt die Geschichte sprichwörtlich auf der Straße, also sollte man hier unbedingt auf Erkundungstour gehen und einen Blick in die Hinterhöfe und verborgenen Gassen werfen!

Um 1750 wurde der Hackesche Markt auf Bestreben des Berliner Stadtkommandanten Graf von Hacke und Friedrich II. angelegt. Um 1840 erfolgte die offizielle Umbenennung auf Hackescher Markt. Im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gewann der Platz für das umliegende Stadtquartier immer mehr an Bedeutung. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in Zeiten der DDR verlor der Hackesche Markt mit dem Ausbau des Zentrums am Alexanderplatz an Wichtigkeit, und erst nach der Wiedervereinigung und der Sanierung der umliegenden Altbauten erlangte der Platz wieder seine Attraktivität. Nach der Wende kamen vor allem Künstler und Querdenker aus aller Welt, die sich in den Seitenstraßen rund um den Hackeschen Markt ansiedelten. Bis etwa Mitte der 90er Jahre war der „Hackesche” Zentrum der jungen Berliner Subkultur mit vielen Clubs und Galerien. Ab dem Ende der 90er Jahre begann sanierungsbedingt der Wandel, internationale Modelabels und Verlage eroberten die Straßen rund um den Platz.

Hackescher Markt Hackescher Markt is found in a lively area in the heart of Berlin. Full of culture, as well as being near to the Museum Island and the historical buildings of the Scheunenviertel, this place is well and truly a Berlin Hotspot. Around the Hackescher Markt, numerous international brands have opened their head offices and concept-stores. In the side streets, such as the Neuen and Alten Schönhauser Straße or Münzstraße, you can find young labels and cool shops. Away from the tourist trodden streets, such as Oranienburger Straße, the night owl can meet friends in small clubs and bars. As he explores, he comes across hip lounges and cocktail bars, and is taken by surprise by the huge culinary variety offered by Berlin restaurants. In this very area of Berlin, you can literally feel the history on the streets, so don’t miss the opportunity to go behind the scenes and discover the rear courtyards and hidden alleyways!

The Hackescher Markt was constructed as a joint endeavour between the Berlin City Commandant Graf von Hacke and Friedrich II. In 1840 it was officially renamed as Hackescher Markt. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the place became increasingly significant for the surrounding area. After the Second World War, in the years of the GDR, the Hackescher Markt lost importance due to the building developments in the Alexanderplatz area, and it was only after reunification and the renovation of the surrounding ‘Altbau’ buildings, that the square regained its attraction. After reunification, many artists and alternative individuals from all over the world came to settle in the side streets around the Hackescher Markt. Until roughly the mid-90s, ‘Hackesche’ was the centre of the young Berlin subculture, with many clubs and galleries. From the end of the 90s, a change began and international fashion labels and publishers took over the streets around the square.

It’s also worth taking a detour into the sidestreets. Auguststraße (formerly the “Scheunenviertel”), hosts many galleries of national and international artists. On Oranienburger Straße you’ll find the synagogue, once Europe’s largest. (Map on page 48)
