From the Publisher Welcome to Three Cities, a bimonthly guide to Morgantown, Fairmont, Clarksburg/ Bridgeport, and surrounding areas. As its new publisher, I am updating the publication to reflect the progressive, historic, and diverse activities we are lucky to experience in North-Central West Virginia. This issue introduces a new masthead and formatting; the spreads have been redesigned to reflect a clean, consistent look, and to be more user-friendly for you. The past couple issues have incorporated more color, updated city maps to more easily locate our advertisers, and reorganized advertiser listings. New features include spotlights on local artists and historic briefs. We continue to increase printed quantities and distribution points so we’re easier for you to find. The publication remains free for readers, thanks to our many advertisers—please patronize them. Enjoy! Donna Kirk Publisher

Feature / Wild Blue Yondering
Wild Blue Yondering Morgantown History Museum features local aviation history A new exhibit, Morgantown: 104 Years of Wild Blue Yondering, is on display at the Morgantown History Museum until September 20. The exhibit explores colorful landmarks and innovations in Morgantown’s aviation history, and is free and open to the public. History was made in Monongalia County in August of 1910 just north of Morgantown at Hoard when the first “flying machine” in West Virginia took off and landed. The first test flights were brief, and the machine barely left the ground. On August 8 of that year, however, aviator Ben Garrison managed to make three successful short flights, rising 25 feet in the air. Garrison and his associate, Ralph Kinderman, made further test flights and eventually flew longer and further. In fact, a year later at the same spot, Kinderman also flew a monoplane he and Garrison had constructed. Kinderman circled the field at about 75 feet up before a gust of wind caused him to crash, but he avoided serious injury.

Run, Dance, and Walk This Spring! Springtime brings many opportunities for area residents and visitors to get outside and move while participating in a good cause Girls on the Run® Comes to North-Central West Virginia Girls on the Run is a life-changing, characterdevelopment program for girls in the third to fifth grade statewide; the nationwide program covers third to eighth grade. The mission of the program is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. In teams of 8-15 girls, lessons in classroom and outdoor settings focus on team building, self-esteem, positive body image, and forming and maintaining healthy eating habits. Twelve weeks of group work and training culminate in a 5k (3.1 miles) run. This is the first year Morgantown has hosted a GOTR program. One hundred forty volunteer coaches from have been provided tools and 12
training to conduct their teams’ sessions. Over 500 girls from five local counties are registered for the spring session. The 5k is scheduled for May 17 in Morgantown. Mountain State Girls on the Run is an affiliate council of Girls on the Run International, founded in 1996, by Molly Barker, a visionary Ironman athlete. Today, there are over 190 locations across the US and Canada, with new locations added each year. From the girls’ perspective, the word “fun” comes up again and again. Most don’t think of it as exercising—they just think of it as fun! For more information visit mountainstategotr. org.

Do You Want to Dance? The Soul Miners share a passion for vintage soul and Motown Where can you currently hear such timetested songs as “Tracks of My Tears,” “What’s Going On,” “I Feel Good,” “Superstition,” “ My Girl,” and “Soul Man?” Find the Soul Miners, and dance the night away! Join enthusiastic fans from West Virginia, Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania who have experienced memorable evenings listening to the Soul Miners play their vast repertoire of vintage soul music from the 1960s and 1970s.
Pub, Chick ‘N Bones, McClafferty’s, and Bartini, in Morgantown; Heston Farms in Fairmont; Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, PA; the Adelphia Music Hall in Marietta, OH; and several other venues. They also are scheduled for private functions, including numerous weddings (here and in Pittsburgh), and a fundraiser for the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV.
Band members include Adrian Michaelz (vocals), Raymond Cook (guitar), Jake Hiles (Fender bass), and Jacob Miller (drums). They all share a passion for vintage soul and Motown. And so do their fans! The band started playing together in 2003, when they played at Mutt’s in Sunnyside once a month. That’s when they found WVU students really liked the music they played. But they found it tough to secure a regular venue at that time.
Michaelz stated, “I really wasn’t sure this type of music would be so popular when we started. I personally am thankful for the people who come out and support us.” Cook chimed in, “We have many fans who follow us—they know the music we play is really special. We’ve met a lot of really cool people doing this on a weekly basis.” Hiles agreed, “We’ve all been in enough musical situations—we’re committed and serious about it. And it’s paying off. We’re being rewarded for our work, and people keep coming back to see us!”
After a hiatus, they regrouped in 2009, and have been playing regularly ever since. A debut at McClafferty’s Irish Pub led to a regular stint at Gibbie’s Pub and Eatery. Gibbie’s continues to be a mainstay on their schedule. The group currently has weekly gigs scheduled, often at Gibbie’s, but also including the Morgantown Brew 14

Welcome Spring! Come visit the inspirational landscapes of West Virginia’s only botanic garden By Barb Howe, Secretary, West Virginia Botanic Garden, Inc.
It’s spring! After a long cold winter, it is time to get out and explore the great outdoors, and the West Virginia Botanic Garden is the perfect place to do this. Located at 1061 Tyrone Road in Morgantown, the Botanic Garden is open every day from dawn to dusk free of charge. You can park in the lot just off Tyrone Road and walk down the gravel road to start to explore this eighty-two-acre site. On Sunday afternoons, from 1 to 4 pm, the gate may be open, and you can drive down to the lower parking lot. You can pick up a trail map at the kiosk near the lower parking lot. We like dogs, as long as they are on leashes, but we do not allow bicycles. This is the only botanic garden in West Virginia, and it has an ambitious mission because “The West Virginia Botanic Garden, 22
in harmony with nature, seeks to enhance the quality of life through public enjoyment and education involving inspirational landscapes and displays of a rich variety of ornamental plants appropriate to the region.” If you are interested in designed gardens, you can enjoy the Shade Garden, Butterfly Garden, Rhododendron Garden, or Secret Garden, which is “hidden” within the Tree Island. However, this garden is unlike most other botanic gardens because, instead of acres of formal gardens, there are many wooded areas, including a majestic hemlock forest. As you hike through the woods, you may stop at the Meditation Garden, located near the Farside Trail. Follow the Reservoir Loop Trail to the boardwalk across the wetlands and read the interpretive signs about the value of wetlands. Take the Wetland Loop Trail to see the new deer

exclosure, erected in the summer of 2013, to see what can grow when deer do not have access to vegetation. You’ll find the Fairy Garden along the Forest Trail, where you’ll see the imaginative “structures” that children build during the annual Fall Children’s Festival to keep the fairies warm during the winter. The City of Morgantown owns the West Virginia Botanic Garden property and leases it to the West Virginia Botanic Garden, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization. That group sponsors walks and workshops that highlight the resources of the site or provide information on gardening-related topics and nature photography. The walks are free and open to the public, while there is a small fee for the workshops, and they require preregistration. You can get information about programs at the Garden at www.wvbg.org or by finding the West Virginia Botanic Garden on Facebook. You can also become a Friend of the West Virginia Botanic Garden at www. wvbg.org. The West Virginia Botanic Garden, Inc., always needs volunteers to help maintain the gardens, plan events, or host on Sunday afternoons. If you would like to help, please contact Erin Smaldone, the volunteer coordinator and education director, at erin@wvbg.org.
The Botanic Garden is the site of the former Tibbs Run Reservoir, which provided clean water to the City of Morgantown from 1912 to 1969. When you follow the Reservoir Loop Trail, which is accessible, you will circle the nowdrained reservoir basin and can see some of the reservoir structures, including the outlet tower, foundation of the chemical feed house, and spillway. Interpretive signs along the trail explain these structures and the role this site played in bringing clean water to Morgantown. Before you leave, check out the Eclectic Garden next to the upper parking lot and on the site of the house where Ralph Lemley and his family lived while he was the resident reservoir caretaker.

The Irish Tenors
with the Creative Music Solutions Orchestra
Since 1998, Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan have toured together as The Irish Tenors, delighting sold-out crowds at Radio City Music Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl and major concert halls throughout the world. Their faces and voices are familiar to PBS audiences through several specials, including the “Ellis Island” recordings that sold a million CDs and DVDs. There is an aching bittersweet quality to much of Ireland’s musical heritage, a melodic loveliness and emotional intensity that brings a tingle to the spine and a tear to the eye. The dazzling technique and depth of feeling that defines this musical genre, amplified to the third power, is the hallmark of The Irish Tenors. The Irish Tenors will be accompanied by a 30-piece orchestra.

Feature / The Old Game
The Old Game Before football, soccer, and basketball, before baseball and golf, there was Irish Road Bowling On March 29, Coopers Rock State Forest is hosting an Irish Road Bowling competition (see calendar of events). So what can you expect if you decide to attend?
spirited debate among the thrower, his coach (the “road shower”), and full-throated spectators. For more information about the sport, see wvirishroadbowling.com
This ancient game has been played for more than 300 years on rural country roads in Ireland, but it is now being brought to you from the green hills of West Virginia. Also known as Irish Long Bullets, this sport is for men and women of all ages from 9 to 90, and is extremely easy to learn while being highly competitive. An iron and steel small cannonball, called a “bowl,” is hurled down a 1.2 mile country lane; fewest throws to the finish line wins, similar to golf. Throws can roll 250 or even 300 yards. Excitement builds as two evenly skilled players match each other shot for shot. Often these memorable matches, called “scores,” are decided by only a few feet or inches distance past the finish line. The twists and turns of a narrow country lane as well as the tilt of the road surface (the “pitch and camber”) provide a rich playing field for strategy and can spark
The game was restored to West Virginia in Ireland, West Virginia, in 1995 during the Irish Spring Festival. Ireland, an unincorporated community in Lewis County, is a picturesque mountain town with small farms that recreate scenery from the Irish countryside. The 2014 Irish Spring Festival is scheduled in Ireland March 9 and 13–20. angelfire.com/wv/irishspringfestival/ The mission of The Wild and Wonderful West Virginia Irish Road Bowling Association (WVIRBA) is to provide you with the same great fun those in Ireland experience when participating in this sport. The WVIRBA sponsors 20 scores (matches) open to the public at 17 events from March to November, in all regions of West Virginia. For more information, go to wvirba.org
