From the Publisher
From the Publisher Early summer brings us so many opportunities to enjoy local activities. Make sure to find your way to one of the many festivals, including the WV Strawberry Festival in Buckhannon; the Three Rivers Festival and PattyFest Old-Time Music Festival, both in Fairmont; and the Scottish Festival and Celtic Gathering and the Greek Food Festival, both in Clarksburg (see articles and related Calendar of Events listings). Area parks including Fairmont’s Palatine Park and Grafton’s Tygart Lake have been renovated and enhance outdoor activities already available. And, did you know that WV ranks number 14 of all 50 states in the Strolling of the Heifer 2014 Locavore Index that reveals commitment to local foods? The index incorporates four measures for which current data are available: number of farmers markets, number of cooperative agreements between farmers and consumers (CSAs), percent of each state’s farm-to-school programs, and number of food hubs. Visit your local farmers’ markets for fresh food—support local growers and eat healthier this summer! Donna Kirk Publisher

Old-Time Music at PattyFest 2014 Thirteenth year of honoring Patty Looman PattyFest 2014, an old-time music festival in its thirteenth year, will be held on Saturday, June 7. Join the fun at East Fairmont High School in Fairmont from 9 am to 9:30 pm! Few people have contributed as much to old-time music as Patty Looman, who was born in Mannington, WV, and spent most of her young life there. She grew up hearing the music of Russell Fluharty, who became known as the “Dulcimer Man,” and was influenced by Worley Gardner, another dulcimer player. The dulcimer became the important musical instrument in Patty’s life. Through her mentoring, playing, teaching,
and by setting an example of the spirit of the music and its joys, Patty has influenced many students within and outside West Virginia. The music festival was started to honor her, and now, her memory. There will be many music workshops, jam sessions, an open stage and a full menu of traditional West Virginia foods all day. There is no admission charge and all activities are free. Information: 304.641.2376, PattyFestInc@gmail.com, and PattyFest.org.

Feature / Palantine Park Renovated
Palatine Park Renovated Ribbon-cutting set for mid-May Beautifully situated along the East bank of the Monongahela River in the downtown area of Fairmont, Palatine Park provides the perfect setting for peaceful walks and access to the river for boating and other water sports. And soon it will feature some wonderful new benefits for residents and visitors. A two-phase renovation is underway to ensure the park attracts users, and, potentially, further private and commercial development in the area.
County Commission is going to step forward and develop this park for everybody in the county,” stated Marion County Commission President Butch Tennant. In addition to the Phase I work, the County Commission is planning Phase II, which includes an artificial ice-skating rink. Also, the Department of Natural Resources plans to build a boat dock on its adjacent property in late summer 2014.
Marion County, which acquired the property from the City of Fairmont and CSX Railroad Co., is adding a splash park, boat ramp, parking lot—and the requisite restrooms— along the water, to accompany the existing amphitheater. A playground, expanded skate park, handicap-accessible structures, and a seating area along the bank will also be included in Phase I of the renovation.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will occur just in time for the annual Three Rivers Festival, scheduled for May 22-24. Additionally, the Commission, MCPARC, and many MCLs (Marion County Locals) have organized a summer-long outdoor festival and movie night series at the park called FAME: Food, Arts, Music and Entertainment. The 2014 FAME festival series begins on Saturday, June 7 and concludes seventeen weeks later on Saturday, September 27. Entrance into the FAME events is free. The “themed” festivals start around 3:00 pm and end at dusk (except July 4th). Festival themes and dates in June are 50s, 60s, 70s and CARS! (June 7), Blues and Bluegrass (June 21).
The history of the area includes some undesirable activity during the 40s and 50s, before the local womens’ club cleaned up the area and made it a park. The city built the pavilion in the 1990s. “Fairmont is really the only river town that hasn’t developed the waterfront, so the Marion

Clarksburg Uptown’s Summer Jazz Stroll Set for June 20, Jazz Stroll expands to six venues --Content originally appeared in West Virginia’s Jazz Newsletter, Improvisation, March, 2014
Clarksburg Uptown and the West Virginia Jazz Society announced plans for The Uptown Summer Jazz Stroll. Set for June 20 in Clarksburg, the program has expanded from four to six venues and will offer hours of live jazz music with no cover charge to the hundreds expected to attend. The Holiday Jazz Stroll last December attracted over 1,040 music fans to Clarksburg’s revitalized business district, filling the event’s four venues to capacity. After the success of the first Stroll, Clarksburg Uptown, Inc., the “owners” of the event, decided to recommit to the concept by expanding the offerings by at least 50 percent. Venues for the Uptown Summer Jazz Stroll include the Fifth Floor Lounge, the Blue Bird Store, the Starving Artist Studio, Main Street Cafe and Gallery, Kelly’s Pub, and Uptown 22
Seafood, all located within a two-block area of Uptown Clarksburg, just off the Second Street Exit of US Route 50. Many regional musicians are forming ensembles for the sole purpose of playing for the Uptown Summer Jazz Stroll, where they will perform with nationally known artists. “The result is a wonderful combination of talent that you’ll only hear at the Stroll,” said Rose Ann Policano, West Virginia Jazz Stroll Vice President. “Touring artists have a lot of respect for our regional artists, and vice versa. So it works out really well.” The Stroll format features no cover charge for one-hour sets at 6, 7:30, 9, and 10:30 pm, with 30 minutes between sets so people can “stroll” to other venues. Some venues will begin their live music at 6 pm, and others at 7:30 pm. For updated information, visit Clarksburg Uptown’s website, clarksburguptown.com.

Lambert’s Winery Surrounded by a vineyard If you haven’t already done so, treat yourself to a visit to Lambert’s Winery, located in Weston, WV, 25 miles south of Clarksburg. The winery is reminiscent of Tuscany in landscape and architecture. Buildings are constructed from hand-cut stones, some of which weigh as much as 3,000 pounds, gathered from various parts of West Virginia. A comfortably furnished tasting room welcomes visitors. A fireplace is surrounded by rocking chairs and shelves displaying West Virginia pottery and other novelty items for sale. Enjoy a free wine tasting and take a tour to see the racking room, storage area, and cooling room. A popular feature at the winery is its brick oven, which can bake 7-8 pizzas in just 5 24
minutes. For four years, the Lamberts have hosted “Wednesday Pizza Night.” This popular tradition attracts visitors from far and wide. Attendees are often people doing business locally who have heard about the fun. Pizza Night is held every Wednesday from May 7 through August, 5-9 pm, rain or shine. Lambert’s Winery was established in 1992 by owners Jim and Debbie Lambert, who would like to extend a personal invitation to come and tour the winery. The Lamberts also offer catering for weddings and other events they host onsite.
