West Virginia Public Theatre Announces Its 2014 Summer Season Celebrating its 30th season West Virginia Public Theatre (WVPT) is excited to announce its 2014 Summer Season. WVPT is celebrating its thirtieth year of bringing Broadway’s best to Morgantown. The season opens July 9–13 with the off Broadway hit Dames at Sea, a show that both The New York Times and Newsweek have called “Best Musical of the Year.” Dames brings us the nostalgia of Hollywood musicals of the 1930s. Ruby, a small town girl, begins her aspiring stage career in the chorus. With the help of a sailor named Dick, her doomed Broadway show is saved with a smash tune. In the end, Dick helps Ruby become a star at last, as she performs on a battle ship. From July 16–20 WVPT is proud to present South Pacific. This Tony Award-winning musical, based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, is a Rogers and Hammerstein classic set on an island paradise during WWII. Nellie is a spunky nurse from Arkansas who falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. When tragedy strikes the island, she realizes the value of true love and family. This show features hits like “There Is Nothing Like a Dame,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair,” and “Some Enchanted Evening.”
Running from July 23–27, Hank Williams: Lost Highway tells the story of the Alabamaborn musician and his journey from the Louisiana Hayride to the Grand Ole Opry. Rolling Stone stated “[Lost Highway] transports its audience and communicates the inspiring message of the beauty and richness of Williams’ songs—forceful, cleareyed, moving, [and] impressive.” Wrapping up the season is the five-time Tony award-winning musical, The Who’s Tommy, which will run from July 30–August 3. An adaptation of the 1969 rock opera by Pete Townsend, Tommy tells the tragic story of a boy struck at once blind, deaf, and dumb after witnessing a horrendous act at the age of four. Tommy endures the unthinkable as a child, but it isn’t until after he becomes a Pinball Wizard that he is able to be free of his catatonic state. For information on tickets, gift certificates, or season subscriptions, call 304-291-4117 or toll free 1-877-999-WVPT (9878) or go online to www.wvpublictheatre.org.

Feature / Ben Gazsi
The Red-Tailed Hawk, in progress and finished with the artist
Ben Gazsi Nature into Art Cooper’s Rock State Forest has always been a popular destination for locals as well as family and friends visiting from out of town. Beautiful trails, natural rock outcrops, and awesome views have always been popular attractions. And if you have visited the park recently, you likely have seen the unique eco-sculptures that greet visitors near the overlook area, The Giant Bear and The Cooper’s Rock Turtle. Morgantown is lucky to, at least for the present, be where award-winning ecosculptor Ben Gazsi calls home. Ben, whose family has Morgantown roots, recently graduated from WVU with a bachelors degree in fine art, and will soon be headed to upstate New York to work on his masters degree in fine arts at Alfred University. 12
A couple years ago, while studying at WVU, a requisite for one of Ben’s sculpture classes was that he complete a public project. He loves Cooper’s Rock, and asked if he could build his first sculpture, The Cooper’s Rock Sleeping Giant, at the park and reveal it for Earth Day 2012. A recreation of that popular sculpture, The Giant, later won Ben sixth place in the world’s largest public art competition, ArtPrize 2013, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Unfortunately, the original Sleeping Giant’s materials have returned to original state and the sculpture no longer exists. But the two fore-mentioned sculptures at Coopers Rock will likely last longer, as Ben has learned some tricks enhance his sculptures’ endurance through winter weather.
Feature / Ben Gazsi
Clockwise from top left: The Cooper’s Rock Sleeping Giant; The Giant Bear; The Cooper’s Rock Turtle
Before leaving for grad school, Ben gave North Central WV another gift. He recently finished yet another eco-sculpture for the enjoyment of visitors to the West Virginia Botanic Garden (WVBG). Ben’s newest sculpture is a ten-foot red-tailed hawk. The hawk was unveiled during a special event called Ben, BBQ, and Bluegrass on June 14 at the WVBG. His inspiration for this commissioned piece was the landscape itself and the recent release of a rehabilitated red hawk at the garden. Ben reflected, “Even though I wasn’t born and raised here in West Virginia, I will always remember it as where I began as an artist. This is a place that will always feel like home to me.” Thank you, Ben, for your contributions and best of luck to you wherever life leads you!
Ben uses mostly natural materials to fashion his creations. He uses tree limbs for basic foundations, entwines wild grapevine to form and detail shapes, and other materials as appropriate to finalize. For instance, the Giants had moss for their beards, the bear’s fur is primarily evergreen limbs, and the turtle’s shell is constructed of an earth mound layered by natural stone and mortar. Just as his materials are gathered on site, Ben’s inspiration is drawn from the environment where the creation happens. He always creates a prototype for reference to guide the construction.
