eing the most glorious time of year, this December, we anticipate the warmth and depth of camaraderie and friendship, the remembrance of those who may have passed but remain a bright light in our hearts, along with joining family so we might experience the true meaning of Christmas. It is the season that enjoys the innocence and expectations found in the eyes of the young and the enduring gleam recognized in the faces of our elders, which form a true and authentic definition of the holiday season. As adults, we fight the traffic, impatience, and the hectic pace the holidays bring, only to relax, join with friends, and toast another successful 10 | DECEMBER 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

festive season with a glass-mug filled with eggnog and a cinnamon stick. Ah, if only we could bottle the sweet emotions of such a tranquil and somber experience. This month we try as we ease into the finality of 2019. In some respects, it was a remarkable year, although it has been tumultuous at times. Overall, the economy is running well; most people have a very positive outlook for 2020, and other than the ongoing political and ideological battles of differences continue to be shouted out by the extremes, many of us will take comfort that—at least for a few weeks, the pleasure of cheer and spirit will envelop our households. For December, we have the pleasure of sharing a delightful poem that made its way to our mailbox, just in time for the Christmas issue; we’re thankful for such a wonderful gift to share with our readers.

Naturally, you will find our regularly scheduled features that delve into health, relationships, events, and style; plus, this month, we wade into politics so that we too may be added to the archives with an opinion of the political atmosphere. MORE OF THE SAME-OLD—BUT FOR HOW LONG?

t’s interesting to watch a divided America battle day after day. There are those who find President Donald J. Trump repugnant, and oddly believe that he is a fascist dictator and a criminal, while in the background, the Department of Justice will be handing down their findings—which will possibly implicate at least some actors—who took part in an illicit plan, to spy on an individual and a campaign so they might change the results of an election. On the other hand, there are an equal amount of voters who wholeheartedly believe that the power of the government is slowly being handed back to the people—something they’ve wanted for decades—while from daily hearings being televised, they see that the manipulation of aid to a foreign government could have taken place for the start of an investigation of a rival political candidate. What both groups can agree on is that the President and the House of Representatives, have pulled back the curtain and exposed an entrenched hierarchy of partisan government employees, many of whom have been accused of spying for the Democratic Party, and have resisted the acceptance of the President’s executive responsibilities—many of which have had a positive impact on the economic health of the country. Each, having good intentions, should take a moment and focus on the ghastly behavior conducted by what is supposed to be non-political law enforcement agencies over the last three to four years, (probably even longer), and the shocking actions that are sure to be delivered.

While the impeachment inquiry continues to drag through the holidays, with the media entrenched in opposing camps, the fireworks are waiting to launch. At deadline, we’ve learned that on December 9, the Department of Justice, through an exhaustive effort by special investigators and the US Attorney General’s office, will release their findings in a report that addresses spying and the illicit use of the FISA Court. We expect that the activities of the CIA and FBI, along with exposure of the chain of command by others involved in the attempted take-down of a private citizen who decided to run for President, will be brought to light, accompanied by indictments. Before anyone calls foul, we—like most others—want to hear the truth so that we may make our determination of guilt or innocence. The public is wary of bias, lies, and political tricks. The hope for most of us is that these dragged out investigations will determine truth through facts, evidence, and a timeline, which will show the intent and efforts of those to be named in this repulsive game of power and influence. The trust of the American people has been breached, and they won’t believe anything they hear or see without a dose of skepticism and doubt. As a legal hammer begins to fall on a group of bad players in this modern-day tragedy, it’s anyone’s guess what will result. However, with the light soon to shine on corruption within our government—at the highest levels—we hope the result of these investigations will be the start of the necessary disinfection of our institutions and the offices of our elected officials. he holiday season, followed by winter, is when homeowners spend the greatest amount of time gazing around the house. At the same time, they realize the wear and tear the interior has suffered over the years. In reality, we don’t often look up at ceilings or down at the floors, but, when we do—oh my—the truth is ever-present, and so we scramble to figure out our next steps. Regardless of the home improvement project you’re considering, and whether you’re handy enough to embark on the ‘doit-yourself’ journey, or hire a professional, it makes sense to have knowledge of the products available, how they are used, and the proper installation of each type of floor covering. Then there’s the aesthetics; those sensitive to trends, and in particular a plethora of finishes, will reap greater benefits by being involved in the process. Deciding on floor coverings can be overwhelming and unnerving (this insight comes from first-hand experiences), but with some help, the results will produce enormous satisfaction. In the last few years, terms like; sustainable, non-toxic, luxury vinyl, engineered woods, even water-proof carpeting—and not the green-faux grass type at grandma’s pool have popped up into the vernacular when discussing flooring options. Depending on the use, location, budget, and styling, it isn’t wise to go into this type of project without first-hand knowledge. The question then becomes, “Where do I find someone to talk to?” Some in need will jump onto the internet, and without a doubt, they’ll become armchair quarterbacks on the subject within a few hours or days; but, it often becomes an issue for those with busy schedules and need to get the short-story NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | DECEMBER 2019 | 25

There are many choices, with new products being introduced regularly. In terms of durability, water-resistance, and the ability to be substituted both inside and outside the home, it makes perfect sense to go to the people who specialize in flooring. Below, we’ve listed just a few pointers that will get you started and begin to clear a path in understanding what is going to be in vogue for 2020. 1. Luxury Vinyl It is a great deal better than the often-made fun of, ‘Lick & Stick,’ type of tile. Great wood grains, amazing marble looks for the bathroom; and an array of allnatural colors (by way of photo technology). A good value all around. 2. Carpeting Patterns, sculptured looks, and better wear while offering wonderful softness that lasts, are trending. Additionally, recycled materials are getting into manufacturing standards.

We asked our expert to give us an overview and some pointers about how those of us who are uninformed should decide on what products are best for our needs. We began with the most obvious question, “Scott, please explain some of the most significant improvements in flooring options for consumers, and give us your thoughts on the business of flooring.” “Hands down the Luxury vinyl plank and tile is the best new change to the flooring industry. The products have come so far in quality and performance [with] Shaw and Mannington [being] the industry leaders in quality flooring products.”

Another important factor consumers need to consider is installation, while some manufacturers claim ‘anyone can do it’; here, Scott was clear on his view of the matter. “It’s key that a quality installer performs the install,” he explained, “I hear all the horror stories of jobs gone wrong. When making selections in flooring, it’s so important you go with a reputable company and installer, [they] are aware of ever-changing options in the flooring industry and will assure you make the best choice for your home.” Are there other considerations or advice you have for homeowners? “Designers help tie all the elements of your project together. From paint and window treatments and everything else needed, it’s important that you choose the right flooring for your needs [considering] it’ll be there for a while.”

3. Wood Finally, it’s being used in kitchens, and it looks great. With great rooms in combination with open kitchens, the continuation of the same floor covering meets ‘form & function’. 4. Laminates As a cost-saving measure, the influx of this product (a thin piece of wood placed on a core) remains a staple; color and texture options continue to expand. 5. Ceramic Tile The bigger, the better, seems to be the look for 2020; the 12" x 12" is okay, but the size is creeping up into even larger formats. Patterns are also changing based on consumer’s expectations. Believe it or not, tile is mimicking wood, concrete—even an assortment of fabrics. H

e’re delighted to present a work by Peet Nourjian, a poet and play writer, who once made his home on the SouthCoast, now living in coastal Rhode Island. The poem tells a whimsical tale—with a touch of suspense, of childhood spirit, and the complexities of a holiday that has thankfully survived modern-day scrutiny. The author leads readers from a peaceful country meadow, through the gaslit streets of historic New Bedford, ending at the darkened wharves which berth whaling vessels housing sailors and mysterious characters, reminiscent of those found in Melville’s writings. Never quite knowing what his next prose has in store, Nourjian’s subtle incantations create a joyous journey of twists and turns, causing tender reflection and an outpouring of emotions. Old South Coast Christmas reveals deep sentiments, causing personal reflection on a ‘gift’ which should be delivered to everyone, not only on Christmas Day but all year long. One hundred fifty years ago Before TV and telephones The girls who called New Bedford home Would walk to school on cobblestones Cars were not invented yet Folks drove wagons or rode horseback Iron wheels and iron horseshoes Filled young ears with clickety-clack “This street is such a noisy route,” Eliza said to her friend Kate “Let’s cut across the village green But hurry, or we’ll both be late!” Growing up their town was small A village by a tranquil bay But since the whaling ships arrived It grew much larger day by day Eliza lived on a country farm With cows and chickens, pigs and sheep While Kate grew up a city girl Her father was a chimney sweep “Can you come over Friday night?” Kate whispered during history class “They’re dressing up the Christmas tree With ornaments of hand-blown glass.” By the middle of December Ice was floating on the bay Snow clouds hung above the city Afternoons were cold and gray ‘Til that wondrous winter moment When fiddlers played ‘Oh Little Town…’ Red lanterns strung from shop to shop Were lit just as the sun went down

The two girls crossed a busy street At Mermaid Lane they took a right The festive sounds began to fade Tall sailing masts came into sight “What is that fishy stink I smell?” Eliza made a scrunched up nose “Cleaning after pigs and horses Compared to this is like a rose.” Kate whispered, “Please, watch what you say! The docks can be a dangerous place.” Just then two sailors swaggered by One had a scar across his face Honky-tonk played on the piano At a tavern called Lost At Sea The girls turned down an alleyway In the distance, they saw the tree A scruffy little evergreen Wrapped in popcorn, hung with shells Sprouted from the whale ship’s deck The cold breeze tinkled dangling bells “Is this suppose to be a joke?” Eliza blurted out too loud A white beard poked up through the hatch His face revealed that he was proud

“It may not be the town square tree.” He looked at them with twinkling eyes “No colored lamps and ornaments, But less can be a bigger prize.” Kate answered “Please forgive my friend, She wasn’t making fun of you.” He pointed at them with a smile “Say, how’d you like to be my crew?” Both girls abruptly turned to go “It’s getting late. We have to leave.” “I didn’t mean a crew tonight, I need some help on Christmas Eve.” His words wore wings like gentle doves That nested in their chilly ears And as they made their way back home His words they kept like souvenirs Kate’s mother had the table set When the girls came in the door With Irish stew and pumpkin pie Warm smells filled the interior And so did notes from a guitar Kate’s father playing by the fire “Hark, the herald angels sing” Sweet voices from the female choir After pie, Kate showed Eliza Picture books stored on a shelf She pulled one down and opened to A story called “The Christmas Elf.” “That sailor with the big white beard That’s him!” as both girls dropped their jaws The likeness was remarkable! The caption called him ‘Santa Claus.’

The next day school let out at noon A week off until Christmas Day Eliza asked Kate to her farm They climbed into a horse-drawn sleigh “Crack!” went the whip and off they flew Just hoof beats and a barking dog Through open fields and silent woods Shortcut through the cranberry bog “Let’s go look at the newborn lambs Then search the henhouse for some eggs.” Kate had a million things to share A new calf stood on shaky legs With so much fun out on the farm Then biscuits, corn, and T-bone steak By the time dessert came out Both girls could barely stay awake The rooster crowed at half-past six The girls each opened up one eye “You won’t believe the dream I had, Christmas Eve with that bearded guy!” “I had the same dream!” Kate exclaimed He steered us through the midnight sky His whaling ship was filled with gifts We tossed as we went sailing by.” The skating party on Prescott Pond Toboggan rides down Two-Mile Hill Snowball fights, the Nativity play Holiday fun right up until December 24th arrived And still, last-minute things to do Kate and Eliza walked through town “You think that captain found a crew?” They took a right down Mermaid Lane So many things to marvel at The tattooed heads and foreign faces An Eskimo girl wore a cowboy hat “Stripers, scallops, yellowtail, cod!” A Chinese man pushed his fish cart A voice snuck up behind the girls “Thanks for this feeling in my heart.”

That scrawny Christmas tree of his Was bent and twisted from the snow He turned his wooly beard to them His eyes filled with a wondrous glow “We have a special trip to make Raise the sails, cast off from shore.” Like magic, they knew what to do As though they’d made the trip before Not a breath of wind was blowing Yet their sails filled with a breeze That pushed them past the harbor light Far out into the open seas “Take the wheel and steer us north.” Eliza did just what he asked “While you watch for a great red whale.” Kate climbed the rigging up the mast. The captain disappeared below They heard the clang of pots and pans He came up singing “Jingle Bells.” With plates of goodies in his hands “I think I see the red whale, sir!” Kate’s lofty voice was barely heard The captain aimed his telescope Eliza waited for some word Sure enough a crimson monster Shot up through the choppy seas It started swimming at the ship “Captain, use your harpoon, please!” But he maintained his friendly smile With no concern, the ship would sink And sure enough, the whale stopped short It raised an eye and gave a wink

“Keep your sights on that Christmas whale.” He called to Kate high up the mast The redfish swam a crooked course “Where are we headed?” Eliza asked He pointed off the starboard bow A beam was flashing one, two, three “That lighthouse is an orphanage For kids who lost their folks at sea.” They tied up to the lighthouse dock Captain lifted the cargo hatch Then handed boxes to his crew Each wrapped in gold with bows to match Loaded down with Christmas presents The three of them marched toward the place When the orphans opened the door Happiness swept over each face “Come in. Get warm. The cocoa’s hot!” The keeper called out to his guests “No time. It’s Christmas,” Cap replied “Our course is north, south, east, and west.” He hugged the children one by one Then hurried back aboard the ship They cast off lines, the sails filled up That red whale did a double flip The daytime slowly turned to dusk And soon a Christmas moon arrives As captain and his crew of two Bring joy and hope into the lives Of those who need a helping hand Or just a sign that someone cared The lonesome and the elderly So grateful for the love that’s shared “What’s this, a tear?” the captain said Eliza wiped it with her sleeve He called Kate over to the light “Some tears here, too, I do believe.” They both were thankful for the chance To help him on his magic trip “But what about our Christmas fun?” Kate had a tremble in her lip.

The captain got down on one knee “You mustn’t feel so awfully sad You’ll each be back in time to share Christmas morning with Mom and Dad There are lots of gifts beneath your trees But once you’ve opened every one I know the gift you’ll cherish most Will be these good deeds we have done.” His finger pointed to a star That shot across the nighttime skies As Kate and Eliza watched it streak He sprinkled stardust in their eyes All at once the night sky spun It swept both girls right off the deck Higher and higher floating up Until the ship was just a speck “Miss Kate, what’s keeping you in bed? It’s Christmas morning after all.” Her father’s voice called up the stairs “Your gifts are stacked up 3 feet tall.” She woke up just a bit confused Her sleepy face looked at the tree “He promised that I’d be with you. I knew he’d never lie to me!” The farm awoke on Christmas morn A rooster cock-a-doddle-doo’d Wooly sheep were singing ba-a-ah The Guernsey cows together mo-o-o’d Eliza opened tired eyes She wandered through her bedroom door Her family wished her “Merry Christmas! You’ve never slept this late before.”

She marveled at so many gifts Fuzzy mittens, a furry bonnet A brand new sled, some new ice skates A sweater with a reindeer on it As she unwrapped the very last Some stardust fell out of her hair It made her feel all warm inside “The way you do when people share.” With Christmas a sweet memory And school a dozen days away Eliza made the trip to town Her presents packed into the sleigh By the time she reached Kate’s house Her friend had packed up her gifts too With arms loaded up with presents They crossed the busy avenue First a right down Mermaid Lane A left and then another right They found the poorest families there And helped to make their Christmas bright By handing out the gifts they had To those who needed joy and hope Eliza gave a bristle brush Kate donated her perfumed soap And when they had no more to give The smallest child stepped up to speak “You two must work for Santa Claus.” The tear-drops sparkled on their cheeks As both girls hugged them all good-bye Arm in arm they skipped with glee Along the wharf right to the spot Where they’d first seen that scrawny tree But at the dock, there was no ship No captain with a snow-white beard Just a memory of the night And that magic course they steered Next Christmas and each after that They’d always stroll down Mermaid Lane And even though he never showed His loyal crew they vowed to remain.

When asked how she approaches the needs of her clients, Bernier responded, “I’m not so out there that I’m going to experiment on them! My approach is to talk to a client and make them relax—that’s their goal. They’ll tell me what they need, leaving me to create the magic.” We learned that Bernier’s marketing campaign was built around her desire to accentuate a successful career. While delivering a succinct and relevant message to her audience, Bernier decided it was time to go to the next level. She explained her motivation during an interview that took place at the Marion General Store over coffee. “I worked with a professional ad agency and told them what I wanted to do; they, in turn, took my ideas and developed a logo, website, and P.R. program that is tailored to my objectives.” Bernier’s branding project is to launch during the first days of December. Her new identity is optically intriguing, and obviously to the point, by the use of a script-type signature, and a new name, Nadine = Hair. he glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver will dazzle guests this holiday season as they tour three of the most magnificent mansions in the collection of the Gilded Age homes of America’s 19th century, high-society. Designed and decorated in yuletide finery, in combination with the music of the era and numerous tour options, highlights the celebration of Christmas at the Newport Mansions. While the summer experience is a memorable occasion, now is the perfect time to add to the ‘must-do list’ and ring in the season while relishing in the spirit of the holidays. The Breakers, The Elms, and the Marble House—three National Historic Landmarks and icons of a magical period in America—are filled with thousands of poinsettias, fresh flowers, evergreens, and wreaths. Thirty decorated Christmas trees reflect the magnificent décor in many of the rooms. Dining tables set with period silver, china, and crystal, complete the elegant setting and instill warm feelings of tradition. The windows of each mansion are lit with individual white candles, in keeping with colonial practices. According to the Preservation Society, all three houses will be decorated and open daily for tours through Wednesday, January 1, 2020. ow good is a love relationship? In answering this question, we need to look at its framework, and in doing so, the conceptualization of the relationship will aid and add value when discussing and evaluating efforts to improve the relationship. Considering that relationships are made up of three distinct parts; a team, a friendship, and a love affair, the interaction of each often reveals areas where positive change is necessary. To evaluate your love relationship, ask yourself, “How satisfied am I with how the two of us function as a team, as friends, and as lovers?” It’s important that each level of interaction is strong and deeply satisfying so that the full entity—known as a relationship—is complete. The way partners function as a team is different from how they maintain their relationship. Most couples function best in one or two of these realms and are weaker in the others. It’s in these areas of 50 | DECEMBER 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

deficits we find the most opportunities for change and growth. Parts of a love relationship can seem separate, but in reality, they are not distinct. Each element blends into the others and causes an effect. For instance, if two partners do not function well as a team, their frustration of poor cooperation will harm their friendship. If partners are weakest in their sex life, a dissatisfied partner will eventually struggle to be a best friend. And, if the friendship is weak, many partners will not be an enthusiastic lover or try as hard to be a successful teammate. Using this identification of interactions between individuals, allow us to see how a relationship’s parts are interdependent. Functioning as a team is the most thought-oriented and least emotional of the three building blocks of a relationship. To be an effective team requires less emotional connection and closeness than the others. In many poor and unhappy relationships, we partners can function well as a team when parenting children, running a household, and taking care of daily needs. However, being a good friend requires more

emotional sharing. It is a close friendship that requires more openness and a deeper bond. Partners who are less emotionally aware may be limited in offering friendship, resulting in an angry and resentful partner. Being great lovers demands the most closeness and openness. Intimacy is the most vulnerable of the three relationship elements and has the potential to heal early childhood issues by including a partners’ eroticism. At times, a couple may maintain an active sex life without emotional connection; they participate in mechanical sharing—their bodies are involved but not their hearts. For most partners, this is a poor quality love affair...a bit like a hot fudge sundae without the hot fudge. Being friends is essential for the wellbeing of a romantic connection. The friendship is the core of a relationship, and functions as the hinge-pin between being teammates and being lovers. When the goodwill of friendship has evaporated due to the build-up of resentments or damaged trust, a relationship is at risk because the friendship core has been corrupted. The friend connection is fragile and easily frayed by the stresses and intensity of modern life. Partners who have lost their friendship no longer feel close and experience emotional disconnection. Without this core, relationships are at heightened risk for infidelities, dissatisfaction, and dissolution. By considering the status of these three components of teammates, friends, and lovers—partners have a useful tool to use to pinpoint relationship weaknesses. Being teammates allows love to be offered in the form of support, thoughtfulness, and making the other’s day easier. In friendship, love may be offered through understanding, listening, and compassion. Through intimacy, love is offered through openness, expressions of passion, and the sharing of physical pleasure. Having so many ways to demonstrate your love to a partner allows your relationship or marriage to be most satisfying when love is expressed generously and thoroughly in all three departments. New York At The Met Fifth Avenue Through January 20, 2020 The Renaissance of Etching The history of printmaking has been punctuated by moments of the great invention that have completely changed the course of the medium. The beginning of etching in Europe in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries—when the technique moved out of the workshop of armor decorators and into those of printmakers and painters—represents one of those pivotal moments. Etching, essentially drawing on the surface of a metal plate, had an ease that opened the door for all kinds of artists to make prints. The pioneers of the medium included some of the greatest painters of the Renaissance, such as Albrecht Dürer, Parmigianino, and Pieter Bruegel, the Elder. This exhibition traces the first sixty years of the etched print (circa 1490 to circa 1560), from its emergence in the workshop of the German printmaker and armor decorator Daniel Hopfer to the years when a range of artists from Germany, Flanders, Italy, and France began experimenting with etching. Approximately 125 etchings, produced by both renowned and lesserknown artists, are displayed alongside many drawings, printing plates, illustrated books, and armor. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT PREDIABETES BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.Ed.

illions of Americans are on the threshold of a metabolic cliff that puts them at increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says roughly 84 million US adults, or more than one in three people aged 18 and over, have above-normal blood sugar that is not yet high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes. Of these prediabetic people, 90 percent of cases stay hidden because it often cannot be felt or otherwise noticed until major issues develop.1 A primary risk factor for prediabetes is being overweight. Not surprisingly, the latest statistics gathered from the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, show that US adult obesity now exceeds 25 percent in 48 states, 30 percent in 31 states, and 35 percent in nine states, with Mississippi and West Virginia ranking highest at nearly 40 percent and Colorado lowest at 23 percent.2 These numbers align closely with prediabetes statistics. If left unchecked and diabetes takes shape, every organ and the quality of life can be impacted. Kidney failure, blindness, peripheral nerve damage, and depression are some of its dreadful consequences.1 ABOUT PREDIABETES

Prediabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by excess body fat and insulin resistance.3 When glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids enter the bloodstream after a meal, blood sugar rises and the pancreas secretes insulin hormone to shuttle these nutrients into the body’s tissues where they can be metabolized into energy. In prediabetes, however, cells become resistant to the hormone, forcing the pancreas to make increasingly more insulin to overcome the intolerance. When it fails to keep up, blood sugar remains higher than it should. Who is vulnerable to prediabetes? The CDC offers a quick test to estimate individual risk at cdc.gov/diabetes/risktest/index.html, while Table 1 provides a quick summary of risk factors.1

Americans, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and a number of Asian Americans are at greater risk.

A blood test is needed to determine whether a person is prediabetic, of which there are four options.4 An A1C test measures average blood sugar over the past two-three months. Below 5.7 percent is normal, 5.7-6.4 percent is prediabetes, and 6.5 percent or greater is diabetes. This test may be used alone or in combination with other measures. A fasting blood sugar test measures blood sugar after not eating the night before (i.e., fasting for about 10 hours). A reading of 99 milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) or less is normal, 100-125 mg/dL is prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or greater is diabetes. A glucose tolerance test measures the body’s response to ingested glucose (simple sugar). First, to get a baseline, a person’s fasting blood sugar is measured. Then, a person consumes a glucosecontaining drink and has their blood sugar measured after one hour, two hours, and possibly three hours. A two-hour reading of 140 mg/ dL or less is normal, 141-199 mg/dL is prediabetes, and 200 mg/dL or greater is diabetes. A random blood sugar test can be taken at any time without fasting. A reading of 200 mg/dL or more signals diabetes. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | DECEMBER 2019 | 55

EXERCISE IN HEALTHY LIVING

The good news is prediabetes can be reversed and prevented through diet and exercise. While research has shown that 70 percent of prediabetic people go on to develop diabetes, the CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program suggests that losing just a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of body weight can reduce these odds by 16 percent.5 Weight loss of 7-10 percent of body weight is advised for preventing type 2 diabetes. For those at risk of diabetes, Table 2 offers highlights of the American Diabetes Association’s current consensus of evidencebased dietary advice.6

Both prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are called “hypokinetic” diseases because, along with poor diet, they typically arise from inactivity/sedentary lifestyle. While exercise alone is not a good way to lose weight, it can be more effective than medication at reducing blood glucose and preventing diabetes since exercise naturally lowers blood sugar by improving sensitivity or tolerance of tissue cells to insulin. A 2016 study in the journal Diabetologia looked at a model of the CDC’s Diabetes Prevention Program of dietary modification, exercise, and weight loss to determine the effect of the exercise component alone on glucose tolerance. Of 237 non-smoking adults, aged 45-75, with high fasting blood glucose, those that engaged in dietary change plus exercise witnessed an 8.2 percent improvement in glucose tolerance, while those who only engaged in moderateintensity walking at 11 miles per week saw a 6.4 percent improvement—nearly the same, but not quite.7 The takeaway is that given a choice, diet is more effective than exercise at decreasing high blood sugar and preventing diabetes. However, diet, exercise, and weight loss combined is the best approach.

and fats, total daily calorie intake should be the focus. A plan of eating and exercise that results in an energy deficit and weight loss is advised. Lifestyle therapy and medication may be considered to help achieve 7-10 percent weight loss. Healthy eating combined with aerobic and resistance exercise is advised for prediabetics of normal weight.

Aim for a minimum of 25-30 grams of fiber per day

through whole fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, which may help to lower A1C. Since carbohydrates have the most impact on blood sugar, foods low in added sugars, fats, and sodium while high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals should be selected.

Eating patterns should focus on nonstarchy vegetables,

minimal added sugars, and refined grains, and choosing whole foods over highly processed. Eating styles with the best evidence for managing prediabetes and preventing type 2 diabetes is Mediterranean-style eating (best for preventing type 2 diabetes), vegetarian, low-fat, and DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). Reducing carbohydrates has been shown effective for improving blood sugar in people with diabetes.

MOTIVATION AND GUIDANCE

Even when faced with a devastating chronic disease, changing health behavior can still be a challenge for many people. The CDC’s National Diabetes Prevention Program can help people at risk for type 2 diabetes overcome the challenges in modifying their lifestyles and acquiring healthy habits. According to the CDC, participants who lost 5-7 percent of their body weight and exercised 150 minutes per week slashed their risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent and up to more than 70 percent in those over 60. Even after more than ten years, participants were about 33 percent less likely to develop diabetes than non-participants.
