Two days of gale force winds almost CANCELLED the 2001 Bord Gais 470 European Championships. But Royal St Georg Yacht Club (Ireland) supplied a beautiful last day as the setting for a fight to the finish in both Mens and Womens Fleets. Int 470 was proud to be the first Olympic Class to visit Ireland in more than 15 Years. In the ladies fleet, Greeks Sofia Bekatorou and Amelia Tsoulfa continued domination this season with a final race win to make it five wins in total. Current Olympic Gold Medallists, Jenny Armstrong and Belinda Stowell of Australia, sailed well punctuated with a number of boat handling errors. But the Greek’s superlative boatspeed and great tactic’s meant that the gold never really slipped out of reach at any stage, winning by a good 10 point margin. In the mens fleet, the Israeli pairing of Udi Kiger and Gudi Gal, had scored four consecutive wins going into the final 3 races . The pressure on them was obviously mounting . But despite scoring the worst results of their regatta in the first two races of the Last day the Israelis still held a comfortable nine-point cushion over the second placed UKR duo. In a tough final race, Braslavets and Matviyenko managed a 14th to a very dissappointing 25th to ISR 7s Kiger and Gal, handing a slim 2 point win to the deserving veteran Ukrainian Pair.
