The Olympic Regattawas again the pinnacleof 4 years hard 470 Fleet. Despite sometimes sailing for the International difficultconditions,the cream rose to the top with 6 fantastic fleets. Pauland teamstakingthe medalsin highlycompetitive Kevin'swin was proof that age is no barrierto dreamscoming true. And overcominginjury,Sofia and Milly'swin was a fitting end to their4 yearsof dominationin the Women'sFleet.

After a heartbreaking4th place at the Sydney Olympics, Nick Rogers and J o e G l a n f i e l do f G B R h a d b e e n i n t h e Medals at every major event in 2004. It looked like their oreoarationwas the best of the teams by race 7 in Athens as they hit the lead and seemed detirminedto stay there. But it all turned around in the penultimate race when the Brits suffered a 1gth comDaredto the USA veterans Paul Foerste(4O) and Kevin B u r n h a m ( 4 7 )w h o r e g i s t e r e da s o l i d 4th to wrestle the lead away from Nick and Joe. So a mere two ooints seoarated Nick a n d J o e a n d t h e A m e r i c a n sw i t h t h e USA Team infront. Both teams were guaranteed at least silver medals so the fight was on between them to decide the Gold .. the stage was set for an epicduel.

The prospect of the final race of the Men's 470 turning into an historical battle, as b o t h t e a m s fe l t t h e y have a point to prove. Nothing to lose and much to gain. But the battle would have to wait, a layday awaited the teams and what a wait it must have been for both teams... Super Saturday would decidethe Medals.. and the teams would have to live through nervous Friday. In order to take the Gold medal,the U S A T e a m s i m p l y h a d t o f i n i s hw i t h i n two places ol Rogers and Glanfield. At the front end of the fleet, the Japanese had done what no other male Jaoanese sailor had done before-. taken an Olympic Sailing Medal, after winning the two Test Events in Athens, founh must have been very uncomforatable for the Swedes Moland and Anderssen.

With the Greek nationalflag handed over, Sofia and Emilia turned their 470 turtle and stood on the upturned hullholdingthe blueand whitestripes oi their nationaloft.

Intothe finaldownwindleg and it was make or break and Sweden were intent on making it. Their game increasedand so did their positionas Sweden moved up one place, Slovenia moved down and the medals exchanged handswith Spain taking the Silver and Swedenthe Bronze.

The final race 11 was a tough affair, with four crews in medal contention for the Silver and Bronze.Natalia Via-Dufresne and Sandra Azon (ESP), Therese Torgersson and Vendela Zachrisson(SWE), Vesna Dekleva and Klara Maucec (SLO) and Susanne and MrchaelaWard (DEN)all chasinghard. The Swedes not only had the pressure of the race on their shoulders,but were also competing in the knowledge that King Gustaf of Sweden was with them every step of the way as he watched the race unfold from a VIP boat. With these four crews focusing on each other's positions,it was left
