September saw Sailing Club JADRO Koper in beautiful Slovenia welcome sailors from over 32 countries to the 2001 Olympic 470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. From as far afield as Qatar to Argentina competion was fierce with Race Committee’s starting over 60 Races and the International Jury conducting almost 80 Protest Hearings. The Ukraine pairing of Eugeny Brasvalets and Igor Matvienko appear to be back to their Gold Medal form of 1996 and backed up from their recent win in the European Championships to register a 20 point margin on the rest of the fleet. The Brits and Aussies fought it out for 2nd and 3rd with a well deserved Silver going to Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield of GBR and third to Sydney Siders, Nath Wilmot and Malcolm Page. Almost not surprizingly, the reigning Womens European and World Champion Greeks, Sofia Bekatourou and Emilia Tsoulfa took the World Title by 33 points. The Top 3 placings in the Women’s Worlds were a replay of the 2001 European championship with Aussie Gold medallists Armstrong and Stowell in 2nd and Spanish Gold Medallist Via Dufresne and Azon in 3rd. 470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - WOMEN’S RESULTS 1 GRE 64 BEKATORU, TSOULFA 21.0 2 AUS 341 ARMSTRONG, STOWELL 54.0 3 ESP1788 VIA DUFRESNE, AZON 55.0 4 GER 4908 ROTHWEILER, LEU 65.0 5 ISR114 KEDMI, FABRIKANT 82.0 6 USA1747 BECKER DEY, WENNSTROM 84.0 7 NED1070 DE KONING, BERKHOUT 85.0 8 ARG104 SESTO, REINOSO 99.0 9 ARG102 SIMONE, MONSEGUR 111.0 10 GER 4876 GROBE, SCHROEDER 114.0 470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - MEN’S RESULTS 1 UKR 7 BRASLAVETS, MATVIENKO 33.0 2 GBR 791 ROGERS, GLANFIELD 53.0 3 AUS 311 WILMOT, PAGE 54.0 4 ESP1769 MARTINEZ, CANTERO 62.0 5 POR 22 MARINHO, NUNES 64.0 6 NZL 92 COOKE, NICHOLAS 67.0 7 GBR 802 VIALS, NEWMAN 75.0 8 GER4896 ZELLMER, KRABBE 80.0 9 GRE131 KOSMATOULOS, TRIGONIS 88.0 10 POL 5 STANCZYK, JAKUBIAK 92.0 MEN’S USA1697 MEN’S DEN133

No less competition in either Fleet with 17 countries in the top 20 Mens results and 13 countries filling the top 20 Womens places. While the Competition was hot the conditions were consistantly tricky and pretty cold from heavy to light with some thunderstoms even thrown in. The local "Burja" storm caused concern early in the regatta with 35 knots causing havoc resulting in one of the competitors from Qatar visiting hospital. International 470 extends thanks to all in Slovenia for their warm welcome and hard work in the lead up to a great Championship. Special congratulations to Koper for great Web Coverage @ http://470.siol.net/eng/novice.asp

Worlds 2002

Cagliari . Italy September 1-15th

The Champions of the future met for the 2001 470 Junior World Title in September at the historic Istanbul Sailing Club, Istanbul in Turkey. Greece is producing some outstanding sailors at present and Mantis Panagiotis and his crew are among the best seen yet. Dominating the contest from the start in the testing conditions that reached 25 knots on the last day, GRE136 were never headed.

Masters 470 World Cup 2001 Castelletto di Brenzone, Italy

2nd and 3rd places were only split on a countback between the top German and Isreali teams. All top 10 boats showed huge skill & potential for years (and Olympics) to Come !!

One of the most beautiful Masters events took place this year from June 30th till July 6th in Brenzone Lake Garda in Italy, not only from the sailing point of view.

See you next year in Belgium ! 470 JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - RESULTS 1 GRE136 Panagiotis Mantis, Polyehronidis 2 ISR12 Yosef Yogev, Amir Shahar 3 GER 4902 Stephan Ulrich, Kai Gritzke 4 FRA2598 Nicolas Charbonnier, S Christidis 5 GRE165 Panagiotis Kabouridis, A Lemanis 6 UKR11 Pavlo Kalinchev, Andriy Shafronuk 7 SLO16 Karlo Hmeljak, Gregor Lisjak 8 ESP1752 Javier Torres, Omar Juan 9 TUR105 Levent Peynirci, Okan Akda 10 GRE 31 Gerasimos Orologas, And Paleras 40 Entries - 18 Countries

We had lovely winds from 7 to 16 knots, warm climate warm water and lovely weather. The race committee conducted 11 races in an absolutely professional way and on - shore we were spoiled with cocktails and a nice dinner. (This was my 14th Masters Championship FULL RESULTS @ www.470.org in a row so I should know) Its a great pleasure to meet with all these old friends every year since such a long time. This is very specific to the 470 Class and its one of the important points which makes the difference to other classes. With the presence of the English team Stan and Dawn the whole event gets its character. This Grand Master team cumulates a total age of 132 years! , We must think seriously of introducing a new category for teams with e.g. a total age of more than 120. Sailing was as usual absolutely serious. On the water friends become competitors and no presents were made. Bernard Boime from France who had already won this event once in La Grande Motte in 1991 took over the lead from the beginning of the regatta. Bernard with Gilles Espinasse was only beaten twice in the eleven races once by the second placed Italians Fava Paolo with Angeletti Ernesto and once by The 2001 Junior European the third placed Swiss Martin Steiger with Hans Vonmoos. This made the regatta very interesting from the beginning till the end. On Tuesday morning the Racing Committee announced a start with the north wind ’vento’ in the early morning at 08h30 and despite all rumours of the Italian punctuality, the preparatory signal was given at the indicated time. I nearly missed the start and the Spanish team Jose Antonio Santiso with Jose Fernando Perez even arrived two minutes too late! See you ALL in Germany Next Year ! Championship took place in Helsinki (Finland) at the Helsingfors Segelklubb from 4th to 12th August.

The Club is situated in the Helsinki bay, where there is a number of nice little islands. 61 crews have entered in the Championship, 13 being women crews. 10 Nations were represented, a great result for the first year of a new Olympic quadriennium. Twelve races have been sailed with a maximum wind speed of 18 knots. The French crew Charbonnier-Christidis recorded an outstanding performance and won the championship without having to sail the last two races and had 5 first places, two second’s, two forth’s and a seventh. The second crew, the German Ulrich-Gritzke won four races and finished with 19 point more than the French crew. The third crew was the Belgian Proot-Heyninck that finished with only 6 points more than the German crew. The Women Championship was won by the Polish crew Tylinska-Kaszalowicz, in front of the French Le Berre-Riou and the German team Walter-Hanitzsch. The Race Committee, as well as the Jury, were both very professional and did a great job. Thanks to all at HSK !! Alberto.
