Olympic Test Event 2002..

2002 World Championships...

Neither Women's and Men's PrePre-Olympic Regatta winner's needed to sail the last heat to register convincing wins in the very first Athens 2004 Test competition .

The 2002 470 World Championships start on Monday (2nd-Sept) in beautiful Cagliari, Sardinia Italy where over 34 countries will fight it out for the first nation qualifications to the Athens Games.

RESULTS 470 Men 1 SWE MOLUND -ANDERSSON 2 POR MARINHO - NUNES

66 The Men’s Worlds will probably see 9 Countries qualify for the 2004 Games, while 6 Countries should qualify from the Women’s Worlds.

From the results it becomes obvious that "Experience Counts" Molund, Marinho, Braslavets, Bekatorou and Sesto have years of experience sailing at Olympic and Pre-Olympic Level. As 10% of the fleet recorded OCS in the early races, the experienced teams adapted while the others perished. The breeze and waves were typically "Untypical" for Pre-PreOlympics and again the experienced teams just found there rythym sooner than the rest. FRA's Petitjean / Dououx sounded a warning with a 3rd in their very first Olympic site regatta and will be even more dangerous with the experience. But the Greeks enjoyed their 470 Women's success and will be hoping that it just a taste of things to come. ISAF narrowly avoided the Team Coaches walking off the job over changed access for Coach Boats on the Race Course. It is doubtfull we have seen the last of this discussion.

Experts are tipping this to be the tightest and toughest Worlds for a while with no less than 15 Men's teams in the running for a Medal, while 10 or 11 Women's Teams are close to the top 3 this year.

ISAF President Paul Henderson said of the regatta.."Although much is still to be done and ISAF will have to face several challenges along with ATHOC over the next two years the Athens 2004 Olympic Sailing Regatta has got off to a fine start." Athens has been getting ready for the 2004 Games for about 108 years.. don't worry they WILL be ready

MASTERS CUP 35 Competitors representing 9 Countries have preregistered to sail the 2002 Int 470 Masters Cup at Lake Starnberg GER 18th - 22nd September

It has been an exhausting season for all the Teams on the Circuit and with no more than a week between the Olympic Test Event and the start of the Worlds it may work against the Pre-Olympic Winners, Molund & Andersson and the GRE Champs Bekatorou & Tsoulfa.

If Bekatorou & Tsoulfa can win, they will become the 1st Women's or Men's 470 team to win 3 consecutive World Championships. Almost 130 Men have registered to start in the Round Robin Qualifiers and over 60 Womens Teams will also contest a qualification series for the first 3 days of competition.

Some of the top teams have already been in Sardinia for a week in preparation for what will be the most important regatta of the year with, in some cases The Greeks are the reigning $50.000 funding hanging on the World Champions and have a lot results for some teams. to prove, The Swedes and particularly Molund has been The International 470 Class close to winning the Worlds on Association wishes all teams many occations but has never Good Sailing and Fair Winds. won...

Record BREAKER ? ESP 470 Champion, Sandra Azon joined her Sister (Former 470 Skipper) Monica and Laia Tutzo to win the recent Yngling Women's World Championships in Switzerland. Next week in Cagliari, Sandra could become the 1st Women in History to be World Champion in 2 Olympic Classes at one time by winning the Int 470 Worlds 2nd 11th September 2002 . 5 Points = Top 5 Places

Hello ICELAND !!

ISAF 2002 WORLD SAILING GAMES.. In the tightest ever finish, a countback for 1st and 2nd and a countback for 3 and 4th decided the placings in the 470 Men’s 2002 ISAF World Sailing Games (MARSEILLE FRA). After 11 races just 5 points separated the first 5 places of the Double Handed Men’s Competition.

Just a great event” said Victor Kovalenko describing the 3rd ISAF World Sailing Championships as, “a really fantastic festival of sail”. “All the equipment was top quality and identical” he said and “ different from the Olympics” all the countries can come and sail and learn from the Top Sailors, the best sailors are free to answer questions and help anyone.”

In an incredible end to the week long, Israeli Yogev Yosef and Shahaf Amir just edged out French brothers Benjamin and Romain Bonnaud in the 23 country / 45 boat event . With both teams locked together on 90 points, neither team were sure of the results until the trophies were announced. "I was pleased that Jenny and Belinda won but also happy to see so many 470 countries here in the Women’s Fleet”. 23 countries competed in the ISAF Worlds for Women’s 470’s , some 3 or 4 more countries than can get approval for the Olympic Games. “This is really high performance woman’s sailing”.

Spain’s Gustavo Martinez & Tunte Cantero and Frenchmen Charbonnier & Bausset were both on 93 points and again neither team could work out the placing’s. 470 Internationale President Heinz Staudt commented that “This result must prove the Int 470 as the most competitive of the Olympic Classes" . Amazingly Yosef and Amir are just into the 470 Senior ranks and were runners up in the 2001 Junior World Championship and Charbonnier was 4th in the Junior Worlds last year and 3rd this year.

"ISAF should push the Sailing Games idea even more” Kovelenko said. "It was disappointing not to see the Dutch or the Swedes in the Men’s 470 Competition.. Victor suggests that “they just need to understand it more”. He ranked the winning Israeli Men’s team as “the most technically advanced team” on the circuit at the moment and Yogev and Shahaf were clearly thrilled with the biggest win of their senior 470 career draped in their National Flag at the prize giving. For the Australian Women it was the result that finally saw them back on top of the World Rankings since their Gold Medal in Sydney 2000. It’s the Sydneysiders 2nd Big win of the year after taking the Kiel Week title in late June.

ICELAND is set to join the family of 470 Just prior to the 2002 470 European Championships in Estonia, the AYF’s Head Coach and 470 Internationale’s Head of Clinics Victor Kovalenko spent 5 days passing on his knowledge to the eager sailors in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. Getting out on the water for 3 days in a mix of classes that included just two 470’s, Victor was impressed with the standard that met him. But even at the height of Summer the temperature didn’t get past 11 degrees and if nothing else the Icelandic sailors must be amongst the toughest sailors in the World. Iceland intends investing in a further two 470’s next season and are expected to be seen on the International circuit in the near future. We wish them luck (AND all the sunshine they can get).

European & Junior Worlds Wins EUROPEAN 2002 CHAMPIONSHIPS Estonia hosted the 2002 470 European Championship in famous Tallin Bay home to the Moscow Olympic regatta of 1980 .. It turned out to be the trickiest and most difficult regatta’s of the season yet and rewarded consistent sailing and nerves of titanium. 27 Countries in the Men’s Fleet and 22 Countries in the Women’s fleet endured all possible conditions over the regatta but as usual the Champions found their way to the top of the results. The Greek Teams were 1st (Women’s) and 2nd (Men’s) in the Euro Only Championships while the Russian’s Women’s champions Vladelina Ilienko & Diana Krutskikh seemed to display some local knowledge to take their best place of the ‘02 season. Fellow Russian and Class veteran Dmitry Berezkin looked strong in Qualification and Early finals only to fall away just at the end of competition.

3 Past Men’s World Champion teams were inside the top 6 European placings indicating that all the fleet is reaching their peak for the Worlds starting next week in Sardinia and 11 different countries in the top 13 Women’s places points to a close finish and a huge battle to decide which countries get the Olympic Qualification places on offer in Sardinia. Just to show the level of competition in the fleet this season, freshly crowned World Sailing Games Champions Yogev Yosef and Shahaf Amir only managed 17th in the Europeans and French World Sailing Games runners up Bonnaud/ Bonnaud were 10th.

Panagiotis Mantis and Theodoros Polichronidis dominated the Junior World Championship held in Nieuwpoort, Belgium 2-10 August. Indifferent winds dogged the regatta but the Greeks won their 2nd World Junior Championship Title before the final race with a 24 point gap back to the Italian and French teams in a count back for 2nd and 3rd Place. Nicolas Charbonnier and Christidis Stephane of France flew in from Estonia after winning the European Only Championships to be involved in his second TieBreaker of the summer, this time locked with Italian’s Enrico Fonda - Pietro Zucchetti on 56 points. (Charbonnier tied for 3rd place in the ISAF World Sailing Games just the week before) Unlucky to pick up 2 x OCS’s the French took 3 x 1st , a 2nd and a 3rd in the middle of the regatta but just faded towards the end.

Poland’s Katarzyna Tylinska and Zuzanna Gladysz were the top Junior Women and the only females to make the tough Gold Fleet. French sister ’s Manuelle and Virginie Adam won the Silver Fleet with Italian brothers Marco and Fabrizio Milan 2nd in the Silver Fleet. 470 President Heinz Staudt gave out the medals on the last day that provided no racing due to bad weather. 19 countries took part and the future looks bright in the 470 Ranks.

ISAF PRESIDENT DEMANDS CHANGE. ISAF President Paul Henderson has demanded changes from the Olympic Class World Championships to ensure continued “..integrity and Fair Play “ . Recently voicing his concern about the domination of large Nations on World Championship Entry lists (and Olympic Qualifiers), Mr Henderson hilighted one Olympic Class Worlds that boasted more than 45 entries from just 1 nation. Mr Henderson has now proposed a method of giving each country an entry quota to the 2003 Combined Worlds in Cadiz that he feels will ensure adequate and fair participation. Using the ISAF Ranking list, Mr Henderson proposes to give all Class Affiliated Nations 2 entries into the Worlds and then 1 additional entry for each sailor they have in the top 60 of the ISAF World Ranking list for that class. He also suggests a limit of 5 maximum entries per nation (except in some promotional situations) and the Nation may not need pick the Ranked Sailors to represent them .

He has also flagged changes to the method and responsibility for appointment of Judges to WC/OQ events. Speaking from Koln, International 470 Association President Heinz Staudt said “ 470 is always interested in positive reform and looks forward to working with ISAF to improve the situation.” Paul Henderson has also raised concerns over the amount of external sponsorship required by Host Yacht Clubs to mount World Championship Regatta’s. The amount of extra sponsor money needed “.. made it impossible to get them (clubs) to host Olympic Class Worlds.” he said. Int 470 has been asked to consider spreading "User Pays Principles" to all attendee’s at World and European Championships including “.. team coaches, managers, masseuses and psychologists.”

Germany’s 2000 Olympic 470 Representative Wibka Buelle (sailing with Ulrike Schümann and Winnie Lipper) were Runners up in the Yngling World Champ and the USA’s 470 Silver Medallist Pease Glaser along with Jody Swanson and Cory Sertl were 6th overall. The Russian team were sailing 470’s at Hyeres 2002 and managed to beat several long time yngling campaigners. Australia’s 1988 Olympic 470 Rep Nicky Bethwaite is even back on the "struggle for selection". It’s wonderful to see that our great female 470ers going onto the Yngling and we wish them every success.
