European Championship 2003.. Brest France - July 4th-16th 2003 Almost 160 470er Teams recently gathered in Brest to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Andre Cornu's launching of the 470 and to compete in the 2003 European Championships. For many teams, Olympic Spots were on the line but for many others fun was the name of the game. French Architect Andre Cornu conceived the 470 as a modern High performance fibreglass planing dinghy with moderate characteristics, which could be sailed by everyone small or large - old or young. What a great job he did. Andre could not have imagined how far his 470 would go in 40 years , 35 nations had turned out to compete in Brest with representation from our Juniors to our Great Grand Masters (Dawn and Stan Speers 138 years between them). Some teams had been at the venue for a week before the regatta but as the first day of measurement loomed, the "instant gipsy camp" grew larger and larger.

A minimum of 4 races are needed in the Qualification phase and by mid afternoon on day 3 the gradiant breeze had filled in enough for teams to go racing... the men in the same groups and the Women regrouped.

Vale Andre Cornu It is with great regret that the entire 470 Family and Sailing World in general records the death of the architect of the International 470, Andre Cornu.

The measurement team had to work hard to put through the 160 boats in 7 minutes each but everything went fairly smoothly, thanks to Michel Petit and his team of volunteers. Groups were made and the the sailors were ready for the first day of competition, then we waited for the breeze, and waited, and waited.... finally very late on the first day the AP was lowered and the teams hit the water. 2 races for the Women and 1 for the men before the wind and evening brought an end to competition. The competition was intense and the Protest committee worked until 1.30 am !

The sailing facilities at Brest are outstanding with large rigging areas and huge launching ramps , they are hopeful of becoming the Olympic Sailing Venue if paris wins the games in 2012. There are 3 Sailing clubs and they join forces to produce big It was a great day for the Japanese championships like ours. teams with a JPN boat leading all three Men’s groups following some The one thing that no-body can terrific light wind sailing. control is the wind and that was the biggest hurdle at the championships. Day 4 saw the hot conditions again and it appeared that 2 seabreezes were fighting each other resulting in a big NOTHING over the race area. The AP stayed up all day and teams were able to retreat to cooler hotel rooms and any shade that was around the club. Day 5 saw little breeze at all again and it was starting to test the nerves of all the sailors (and Race Management) With Olympic spots up for many Nations Teams, sailors were keen to get out on the water. At 6pm the AP came down and 160 boats made a dash for the water. Race management did a great job setting a course and getting fair starts away quickly and efficiently .

Andre died at the age of 91 years, following a short illness on Thursday the 28th of August almost 40 years to the day from the Launching of the very first 470. A celebration of this 40th anniversary was held just last month in Brest France were Andre's work was honoured by the 470 Family from around the World. Andre designed many boats in his time , obviously the most famous of them being the 470 and until very recently he took an active interest in class issues and results. Andre even attended Class meetings up to his 88th birthday.

European Championship 2003 Continued..

International 470 Hall Of Fame To mark the 40th Anniversary of Frenchman Andre Cornu designing and launching the Olympic 470 dinghy, the International 470 Class Association has introduced the International 470 Class Hall Of Fame. With 470s sailing in almost 70 Nations and 40,000 boats worldwide, the class has become recognised as the toughest of dinghy World Championships to win and the ability to win multiple titles is a mark of sailing prowess above the normal. With so many famous names having sailed the class since 1963 and especially since it’s introduction as an Olympic Class in 1976 for Men and 1988 for Women, it was a difficult choice to select the first inductees into the 470 Hall of Fame. But the first of the most deserving sailors and 2003 International 470 Class Hall of Fame inductees are 3 Time 470 World Champions from the USA Dave Ullman and Tom Linskey and Ukrainian Triple World Champions Ruslana Taran and Elona Paholchik. The two teams dominated 470's in their careers Taran and Paholchik winning the Worlds in 1997, 98 and 1999 and Ullman & Linskey winning in 1977,78 and 1980. The Ukrainians also winning the ISAF Worlds and Bronze medals in '96 and 2000.

While in the Women’s Race SLO’s Dekleva & Maucec sailed a brilliant race to pick up 3rd behind Jen Provan & Nikola Girke of Canada in 2nd and the Germans Rothweiler & Leu in 1st.

Stan & Dawn Speers

In the conditions , basic racing was paying , by risking when possible but consolidating when needed. In the Women’s fleet the ESP’s Via Dufresne & Azon were being the most consistant the Slovinians and the Swedes Torgersson & Zachrisson always in the top 6 boats around the top mark.

Via DuFresne and Azon

Women's 2003 470 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

47 and Going Strong - Kevin Burnham

Day 6 and the light fickle breeze continued, the Race Committee ruled out racing before 1pm and then waited for the Gradient to fill in from the Nthwest mid afternoon. Faced with forecasts of No wind for the last day, the race committee faced getting 2 races in with “less than convincing” wind or not getting a series in.

Tight Bunch on Day 1 of Competition

Dave Ullman , Alberto Predieri, Heinz Staudt and Tom Linskey

The last race got off first and was a tense affair but both Danish entries (Kjaergaard & Moeller and the Wards Sisters) won their races but again the consistant USA men’s team scored 4th and secured the 40th Anniversary Title.

In the Women’s race, the breeze was failing and Via Dufresne & Azon went from 2nd to 16th on the last run but still did enough to just win on a count back. Amazingly it was a 3 way countback for placings in the Women’s European Championships with the ESP, SLO’s and SWE’s all on 36 points. In the Men’s, Gildas Philippe & Nicolas Le Berre won the Europeans by just 3 points from Zellmer and Krabbe (GER) on 35 winning a countback from Moland and Andersson also on 35 points.

It has to be pointed out the the Spanish Women’s coach Paul Maas was the Winner of the European Championships in 1967.

Congratulation to our first Hall of Fame Members !!

Ruslana Taran and Elona Paholchik

French at 14th gave the German’s and Swedes Molund & Andersson a chance at the Championship. In the Women’s race the title was tight but the Spaniards looked just in front.

Again Teams were faced with a choice between sides of the course and with localised shifts of 20 degrees, NZL’s Brown & Hunt sailed a great race to lead almost all the way but again consistancy counted and a place in the top 5 was as good as a win, and with a 4th Foerster and Burnham had wrapped up the 40th Anniversary Title but the European title was still wide open.

Sprint Cup 2003.. 16th July 2003 - Brest France.

Sweden’s Johan Moland and Martin Andersson recently walked away from the International 470 Sprint Cup just ahead of the GBR and FRA teams and 3000 Euro richer.

Slovenians Carlo & Mitja Take Junior Europeans 19th - 27th July 2003. Carlo HMELJAK & Mitja NEVECNY won the Junior European Championships in the Beautiful venue of Versoix in light and

The Sprint Cup brought together the top 4 Men’s and top 3 Women’s boats from the Open 470 European Championships for the spectator friendly 20 minute race format . Typically the day after the light weather European Championships, the Brest Breeze blow strong and hard for the first ever 470 Sprint Cup. The two Swedish National Champions edged out Brits Nick Rogers and Joe Glandfield on a count back after the three race/no drop series. Both teams finished the Sprint Cup on 8 points but the Swede’s 2 bullets in the last 2 heats put them ahead of the pack. Newly crowned European Champions Gildas Phillippe & Nicolas LeBerre (FRA) finished just 1 point back on 9 points in third place after taking a 360 degree penalty after the frantic last heat start.

ISAF Youth World Champs to sail 470 Newly crowned ISAF Youth World Double Handed Boys Champions Nathan Outteridge & Ayden Menzies will sail the 470 Junior Worlds and Senior Worlds later this year. Nathan who returned to Australia after his win at the 33rd ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship, being held at Caniçal - Machico in Madeira Islands (Portugal) sail " We are not expecting anything spectacular, but we hope to do as well as we can" Nathan and Ayden sailed several 470 Events last Australian Season coming 2nd in the Mosman Cup in Sydney beating ISAF Ranked No2 Nathan Wilmott in 4 of the 10 races.

In the fresh 15-18 knot conditions, sailing was in complete contrast to the previous weeks racing where only 7 of the scheduled 14 races were completed. American Silver Medallists Paul Foerster & Kevin Burnham took first blood, and with a second Spanish Silver Medallist Natalia Via duFresne with Sandra Azon showed that the woman were the equal of the Men in these conditions, but suffering a blown kite in the 2nd heat put an end to their money chances. The Sprint Cup will be shown on Eurosport in the future and on Watersportworld to 250 Million homes around the World.

shifty conditions. Carlo HMELJAK & Mitja NEVECNY of Slovenia took out the recent Junior (under 22) Int 470 European Championships. 89 Teams from 20 Nations took part including 2 teams all the way from NewZealand and a team from Australia The small club of XXXX had worked very hard to welcome all the teams and provided great value accomodation and food. Measureing was conducted under the experimental 470 format that sees all teams in the 100 ISAF Ranking List and Top 50 for the Women and a further 10 random teams, fully measured and spot measurement for the rest of the teams. Three groups made.6 races for Qualification phase completed for all groups. and in the Final series.Gold & Silver fleets total 11 races and in Bronze fleet 10 races completed (incl.QP) Generally there were light winds (2-3 NE),One day without wind and one day with 4-5 Force SE. The last day saw a huge rain storm that cancelled racing.

French Sisters Manuelle and Virginie Adam won the Women's section of the regatta. Thanks should go to Benoit DEUTSCH and his entire team for the Swiss precision in which the regatta was run.
