They are coming from everywhere !! A huge influx of Juniors and Youth sailors into the 470 ranks has ensured that the next 4-8 years of competition will be new, fresh and exciting. Competitors and Officials have given the Green light to the introduction of Sprint Finals at 470 Major Championships and the Olympics. While the trial at the Holland Regatta proved that spreading the Finals over 2 days is dangerous.. 470's opinion is that Finals including atleast 6 Boats is the most exciting and credible. The General Council will discuss the matter further in October but the first Sprint Finals should appear at 470 regattas in early 2006. 470 President, Darren Dunkley-Smith said.. "There are some exciting advantages in Sprint Finals, but there are some real dangers as well." He went onto say "Our Eurosport Sprint Cup was a great success, but Sprint Finals in Qingdao in 5-8 knots for the Olympics offer some challenges." Sailors input is welcomed (and encouraged).. and can be given direct to the President Via email: darren@470.org.

Paris Désolé

The IOC announced LONDON as the Host the 2012 Olympic Games. And according to the London Bid the Sailors will make Weymouth Home.

The 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition will be at the new Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA). The purpose built £7.85 million Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy was only opened in June 2005. Two and a half hours from London, Weymouth is in the south west of England and will host the ISAF Youth Worlds in 2006. Weymouth hosts a "Speed Week" in October so should offer more wind than is expected in Qingdao China.

Adrienne CAHALAN, the Australian who campaigned the Women's 470 in 2 Olympiads before turning her hand to navigation, has joined the Brasil 1 Team for the next VOLVO Round the World Race.

Please Note the NEW RULE in the 2005 470 Class Rules

The Projects skipper Torben GRAEL puts the appointment as one of the most important for the success of the team

18. EQUIPMENT 18.1 The following equipment shall be on board when racing:

The Australian is one of the best navigators in the world. She has been nominated for ISAF's Sailor of the Year on four occations. She held the navigators position on the Cheyenne, which broke the round the world speed record in 2004.

18.1 (d) Towing rope of floating type with a minimum length of 10m and of not less than 8mm in diameter.

Even being in high demand she chose the Brasil 1. One of the reasons was the strong patriot spirit of the team. ‘This is one of the most challenging projects I have ever encountered. It defies the narrow view of just wanting to arrive first. It involves a lot more; a feeling of national pride, not just a commercial undertaking. It is a Brazilian boat, not just a sponsored boat or a team project.’

THE TOW ROPE WILL NOT FORM PART OF THE MINIMUM WEIGHT OF 120Kgs.

ALPEN-CHALLENGE 2005 - 2nd to 4th September 470's Laufen in den Hügeln After last year’s big success this year’s Alpen-Challenge will take place on Austria’s mountain lake “Achensee”. The lake is commonly known by 420 sailors for it’s 420 Junior Europeans a few years ago and very similar wind conditions like lake Garda.

www.alpenchallenge.org

From 2nd to 4th September the ISAF-3-graded Alpen-Challenge will be held by the SCTWVa. An outstanding social program, good sailing conditions, high ranking list factors for Germany, Swiss and Austria and short travel distances to Italy, Chech Republic and Slovenia should be guaranty for a fleet of at least 40 to 50 boats. One of the altime great Champion 470 Teams have called it a day and retired from top Regatta competition. But after a career of over 12 years that has taken them around the World, the Ukrainian Champions will not be lost to 470 or the Sport. Eugeniy BRASLAVETS & Igor MATVIYENKO are double World Champions and Olympic Gold Medalists in the 470 Class and after winning the 30th International 470 Spring Cup in France earlier this year the team had some hard thinking to do.. “Another 4 years of dieting and hard training for the expected very light conditions at the China Olympics was a lot to ask of our bodies” Eugeniy said. “The Spring Cup was about the last major 470 regatta that we had not won and it was a good way to finish.” Eugeniy has already taken up a coaching position with Yachting Australia so he will be seen around the regattas into the future.. “But it was time to consider our families and balance our lives a little more” The Pair have won Kiel twice and SPA, Hyeres, the Pricess Sofia and represented the Ukraine with great pride for many years... International 470 Wishes them every success and happiness in the next careers.
