My cat, Arthur, brings a lot of joy into my life and also helps in calming my mind after a long day. Pets have a lot of qualities that we can learn from as humans. First, we can learn to be present in the moment. Arthur isn’t worried about the past or future or whether or not his Fancy Feast is going to make him gain weight. He enjoys, and embraces, the moment. Second, most pets love to play and act silly. They remind us to open up our minds, go outside, dance around the house…just have fun! Third, like a dog with his head hanging out of the car window, we need to enjoy the journey, focus on the lessons we learn along the way and enjoy small victories. Fourth, Arthur doesn’t stay angry at me too long after I accidentally step on his tail. He's taught me that holding grudges only has negative influences on my well-being and keeps me from moving forward. Learning to forgive yourself and others gives you a sense of freedom. Lastly, as every pet owner knows, pets love to take naps. We can all learn from our furry friends and allow ourselves unwind and relax!”

MOT IN A NUTSHELL
• UK Government-mandated yearly vehicle roadworthy inspection, similar to what you will find in some places in the US. • Mechanics work from a computer manual, which provides details on what to inspect along with the pass/fail criteria for each area and how to inspect it. • All MOT mechanics are monitored and evaluated regularly for the quality of their testing.
WARNING LIGHTS Recent changes mandate that ANY illuminated warning light is a failure or advisory (depending on the age of the vehicle). For example, a check engine or ABS light can fail a car. In newer vehicles (2012 onwards) a Tire Pressure Monitoring Light can fail a car. An older vehicle may pass if it has warning lights illuminated, but will still get an advisory.
USE YOUR PARKING BRAKE! I cannot stress this enough! Most cars on base are automatics and many people don’t bother to use the parking brake. All that’s doing is using engine braking. When we test the handbrake for efficiency during MOT, all of a sudden it doesn’t work because everything is seized up from lack of use. We encourage everyone who comes in to use their hand brakes, not just for obvious safety reasons but also to keep everything working,

VEHICLE LIGHTING
MOT regulations now have a heavier focus on vehicle lighting, which really impacts the base community. Many vehicles from the US have red turn signals and no rear fog light. This is where the required light conversions come in. They bring your US spec vehicle in line with UK regulations. Depending on the vehicle it can be expensive, but you want to make sure it's executed correctly in order to avoid any electrical issues in the future. Speaking of lighting, the most common light we see failing MOTs is the brake light, so get a friend to help you test this regularly.
TIRES & WHEELS
When conducting a quick visual inspection, you can only see a limited amount of the tire tread. However, when you see the tires from underneath, there can be worn edges on the inside from things like alignment problems. If left too long, tires can bulge or explode. Make sure you're checking tires thoroughly as part of your regular vehicle maintenance.
ONE LAST THING...
Before you come for a MOT do some basic checks for all your lights and make sure window washers have fluid and that the washers work.
