Book Review: ‘Picasso, I Want My Face Back,’ by Grace Nichols.
By Sally Warrell
The first poem in the collection is the long poem, ‘Weeping Woman.’ It is a response to the cubist painting of that name by Picasso which hangs in the Tate Modern. The poem is written as if Dora Maar, nee Henriette Theodora Markovitch, the subject of the painting, Picasso’s lover and muse, was trying to reclaim herself from Picasso as a surrealist photographer and a woman in her own right. The title of the collection begins section 14 of the poem. Nichols writes of other art works; Munch’s Scream, Tracey Emin’s notorious ‘My Bed’ and the Taj Mahal, all with the wit and humanity
which prevails throughout the book. Grace Nichols is an emigrant from the Caribbean, having lived in Britain since 1977. Without that heritage these poems couldn’t have been written, claims F.S.J. Ledgister writing in the Caribbean Review of Books. Yet he sees this collection as the “poetry of an arrivant.” We are taken on a tour of Britain, and to Europe, Africa and India. The poetry is more about these places to which she has come fresh than the internal landscape, the Caribbean heritage which she brings to them. The final section of the book, ‘Laughing Woman’ is about religion, myth, sensuality and most notably humor.
